BPP! You mentioned somewhere that releasing music during enlistment was legal. Is that true? My understanding was that idols were not allowed to earn from their day jobs while in the military.
There is talk of two BTS members releasing albums while away during military service. Most likely this is rumoured to be Jimin and RM. Why would they release an album if they cannot earn from it? Hybe would never give a free album.
Also. Why would they release music when they are not able to promote it? Especially Jimin who only went through a 9 day promotion period for Face. And RM, who had been working very hard for something different (I think he said it in his interview/live that next work will be completely different). Would they not want that promotion time?
I honestly find it quite baffling when some fans argue that that Jimin and RM don’t want the commercial success. I am pretty sure they do so it is surprising that they would be releasing albums while away.
***
It being legal has nothing to do with whether or not Jimin/RM want commercial success.
For every question you asked, direct it to Kai who enlisted before EXO released Exist - an album he contributed to and was profiting from while not promoting it. Or to all the actors who enlist and their projects are released for profit without incident. It's legal. They can't access this profit until their service is over, and that's understood and accepted by all parties.
The issue with Baekhyun was a mob of rival stans from SM groups making a stink, because up to that point Baekhyun was perceived to be the favourite of the company alongside Taemin. People were going to use outside pressure, given the issue involves public perception and the military, they were willing to use that to humble Baekhyun. SM acted to protect their own image even though the initial claims were baseless so their action was unnecessary.
The repeat of the same thing is happening now, with EXO/SM stans angry that BTS, the perceived 'favourite', is putting out music their own fave wasn't able to even if that means ignoring people from their own company (like Kai) who also had no issues. These people are hoping HYBE rolls over and pulls the BTS projects. It's just the classic SM stan coping mechanism of directing their angst/anger/frustration at BTS/ARMYs rather than at SM for the company's own incompetence. That's how a company that's been in as many criminal cases as SM, still has this many loyal fans than critics.
Personally, I'm not invested one way or the other. We don't know what the format of the releases will look like. Whether there'll be filmed performances or not. Most of the time Coldplay performed My Universe BTS wasn't there, so it's not like there's no precedent for the members not actively participating in promoting a song. Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see but personally, I'm looking forward to everything the members have prepared.

dumbass tweet spawning even more dumbass takes so let me share my objective ranking... and yes successful does mean largely commercial aka $$$ success but also like general public recognition and legacy
SNSD. even adjusted for inflation i'm pretty sure few other groups and certainly no 2nd gen group ever brought in the kind of wealth they did. we'll literally never have a girl group as iconic as them again
EXO. period. argue with the wall. in terms of money even to this day bts net worth hasn't been able to reach EXO's so you do the math... in terms of legacy they really do have an unmatched legacy both in their company and in the whole kpop industry.
TVXQ. this one is tough because TVXQ impact in japan alone makes them a big contender for second place but we gotta put them at third and i don't wanna hear anything about 5vxq...
H.O.T I really don't know that much about 1st gen so correct me if i'm wrong but they were literally millionaires by the end of their second year as a group i think? only reason they're not higher is because of how short their career was
Super Junior. really don't care about them and the only reason they're this high is because these bitches have been around for almost 20 years. i guess when you're in the race for this long you must be in demand somehow
SHINee. in terms of artistic legacy they are literally invaluable but i do think their impact in terms of money is considerably lower than the groups above. just like with TVXQ their success in japan boosted them in this ranking. plus all the members have highly successful individual careers
aespa. only 4th gen group to play tokyo dome first gg to have 1M album preorders first gg to sell 2M of one album.... idgaf if you don't like them their commercial success is undeniable. in a few years they could reach top 5 but SM will probably freeze them before that
NCT. honestly sales are the only thing carrying the brand... they have no general public impact and never had individual opportunities to cement them in the industry. the only reason they got as big as they are is because of the "infinite rotational" gimmick and how SM uses it as a sales funnel to boost the subunits as needed
Red Velvet. beloved by tumblrinas and a great discography do give them a good legacy... but sadly their overall commercial success is not what it could have been. SM is to blame for fumbling the bag so horribly but when you put them against the rest of the groups in this list they clearly can't compare
f(x). i can't even say anything about them cause the mismanagement and mistreatment that f(x) suffered is genuinely crazy and it's fucked up... we will never know how successful they could have truly been </3

Build Up Episode 1: Don’t Go
Tumblr media
Hello and welcome back to my Build Up recaps! In the last one, we covered the first two “Pre-4” Mission performances -- If You and Every Moment of You. In this post, we’ll cover Don’t Go (Kajima) and wrap up episode 1, finally!
I found some decent links to watch the episodes.
Episode 1
Episode 2
I’m deliberately hiding them behind a read more since I’m not sure if MNET knows about them and/or if they’ll be there forever, so watch while you can!
Just a little note before we dive in -- I noticed after I had posted the previous one that Seunghun from CIX has braces!
Tumblr media
I’m just really surprised, because I would have guessed that his agency would have made him take them off for this show, or something. I’m glad he has them if he needs them, for sure -- it’s just a surprise. Knowing this helps explain why he smiles so strangely sometimes.
Anyway!
Don’t Go
The next performance is Kajima, Kajima (Don’t Go, Don’t Go).
A little about the song before we get to the performance. It was originally performed by a singing duo called Brown Eyes, which, per Wikipedia, is “considered one of South Korea's most important R&B groups, given their immense commercial success.” The duo consists of Yoon Gun and Naul, both of whom have gone on to do other stuff. Naul recently did a duo with Sung Sikyung, the guy who first sang Every Moment of You (the previous song on this show). The song Kajima, Kajima won the Best Ballad/R&B Performance award at the 2008 MNET Asian Music awards.
Kajima, Kajima is the miserable wail of a deserted lover begging their partner to come back. Some of the lyrics, per a blog I found: “Stupidly / I still live for you / Where are you? / I need you so much / Oh baby, my only one / Please stop and come back now / Just tell me this is a joke / Simply return to me.”
Mini Korean lesson: You might recognize the -jima ending from the GOT7 song Stop It, when they say “hajima, hajima” over and over (“hajima” means “don’t). And you heard the “ka” verb at the beginning of the Oneus song Lit, when they say, “Kaja!” (let’s go!) So ka is for go, and -jima is a negative command, so kajima is “don’t go”. Woot!
Kajima, Kajima is known for a really high note -- a high G#5. I would have to warm up to hit that note at all -- and I’m not confident I could hit it with much resonance. And I’m a mezzo-soprano -- it would be insane to hit that note as a tenor!  Like the other ballads on this show, it’s known for being particularly emotional, but in this case it’s also tricky to sing. That’s why the other guys call it a “hell song.”
So, who would want to take this song on? Why, mister high notes himself, Park Jeup.
Tumblr media
Park Jeup was second to choose and chose this song right off, but it took a while for anyone else to join him, to the point that he started to get nervous. But after a bit, 16th ranked Detective Donghun from A.C.E. chose it while there were still spots open in every song. It turns out that Donghun really wanted to sing Breath but chose this song so that he could work with Jeup. Aww! They were on I Can See Your Voice 4 together, so Donghun may have admired Jeup’s voice for a while. They’re “chingus” in the sense that they were born in the same year, 1993, and in Korean culture having someone around who is the same age as you is sort of meaningful, almost like when you meet someone from your home country when you’re abroad.
Tumblr media
“Will I be able to sing this song well?” … “I’m sure you’ll do well.”
Also, Donghun proved he’s not scared to tackle tough material when he did an EXO song for his teaser performance.
By the time Neon chose the song, Ditto, Tomboy, and Shall I Love You Again  were closed, but he seems to choose this song without hesitation. By the time 36th place Hyukjin choose it, the only songs open were this song, Every Moment Of You (the one we just saw), or Breath, but I think he might have really wanted this song anyway. Based on his teaser performance -- that wild metal performance -- he also likes to tackle tough material. (Hyukjin was also born in 1993, making him also a chingu to Jeup and Donghun. Neon is a little younger, about 28 years old.)
In my original assessment of Jeup, I noted that I loved his technique but wasn’t sure about his timbre, but that I’d give him a chance to grow on me. For Hyukjin, I recognized the ambition of what he tried to do and again decided to reserve judgment. About Neon, I said that he has nice, clean vocals, with good technique and a lot of power. And I said that Donghun has an appealing warm vocal color with good breath support, but strains his throat a bit. If I had to pick a favorite voice of the four based on their teaser song, I’d choose Neon, but Donghun wouldn’t be too far behind. This is a group of powerful vocalists, regardless of the category they chose, and I am hopeful that it will turn out well.
The group seems pretty happy to all be working together, and they view each other as talented colleagues, which might make it tricky to divvy up the parts. They’re all really good, so who should sing what?
Tumblr media
Look at how shiny Hyukjin’s suit is! Those gray lines are just lights reflecting off of creases in the material.
They begin singing the song a bit to test out the waters, and Jeup’s strong clear tenor fills the studio. Over in team Beautiful, Lim Sang Hyun wonders out loud, “Is that the original song playing?”
Tumblr media
LTR: Lim Sanghyun, Taewoo, Jeong Yunseo, Kim Minseo
They take turns singing a bit and they all sound fantastic. They’re not really sure what to do, because Jeup doesn’t want to take the verse, which he thinks is too low for him, and so he wants to do the chorus, which is a long part. Donghun also wants to do that long part, but decides that it suits Jeup more and decides to do a different part that is more emotional, even if it’s shorter. The rest of the part distribution goes well.
Then we go into a mini montage of Donghun’s struggles in his life. He’s always wanted to sing, and went on various shows to make that happen, but though he made top 10 of Superstar K5 that wasn’t quite good enough, and then he made the debut lineup of that shitshow that was MIXNINE but of course that group didn’t debut. He thought that debuting (in A.C.E.) would make it ok, but it didn’t. I beg to differ, sir! People really like A.C.E.! But I guess it’s not like A.C.E. have hit the highs of BTS and Seventeen, so I understand what he’s saying. “Actually the survival program itself was a bit of a trauma for me,” he adds, and I feel that. These shows seriously should gift each contestant at least 20 hours of a post-show mental health counseling.
The guys are meeting in some sort of staff room, probably at one of their agencies. Looks like three of them were drinking something cool, but smart Jeup is drinking something hot. Cold stuff is bad for your throat, my friends. Jeup knows where it’s at.
Tumblr media
Left to right: Hyukjin, Neon, Donghun, and Jeup
Tumblr media
Also, I think Jeup looks so much nicer with his hair this way, sort of parted and brushed back, instead of down over his face like bangs.
Anyway, at this meeting, Donghun is saying, “I want us to decide what kind of thoughts we’ll have when we sing this song, so that we have a unified approach. The song title is Don’t Go, Don’t Go. We can make it about our dreams. I haven’t seen my dream lately, and I hope it comes to me now.”
The editors play some sad piano music as Donghun’s words sink in. All four of them know what he’s talking about. Honestly, Hyukjin and Jeup know what he means even more than he does -- A.C.E. is about 100x more popular than Jeup’s group was, and about 100,000x more popular than Hyukjin’s current group.
Tumblr media
Hyukjin, partly quoting from the song, says, “Living like a fool is heartbreaking. But we keep living like fools.” Then he smiles incredulously, as if he almost can’t believe that he’s made that connection. Donghun has really hit a nerve here.
Donghun agrees with Hyukjin, and says, “yes, we keep singing like fools.” He interviews that he wants to reclaim his dream and get it back.
As the lights go down on performance day, Donghun voiceovers, I want to sing my heart out with no regrets.
Here’s the full version, no reactions.
My thoughts:
Damn, that was good.
Tumblr media
Let me nitpick for just a few seconds. Yes, Hyukjin’s voice is a little thin and he strained on the highest notes, and Jeup’s voice is a bit too high in timbre to be my favorite, and Donghun’s voice still sounds strained, like he must be hurting his throat.
But it all ended up working. I don’t know, man, this was good. For one thing, all the voices are really good individually, and then they also are a great mix. You’ve got the slightly tart Jeup, like a strawberry. You’ve got the bright voice of Hyukjin, like a raspberry. You’ve got the slightly challenging voice of Donghun, a pineapple. And then the smoothest voice, Neon, as a slice of banana mixed in to smooth the whole thing down. It fucking works. I don’t even like this song and I liked listening to their performance. I mean, this is going on my playlist, you guys. This is good shit.
I particularly like Neon’s voice, even though I recognize that it’s not quite as powerful or well trained as the others’. To me, he sounds just a little like Do Kyungsoo and that’s just about the highest compliment I can give to a singer.
Also, damn, I don’t normally talk about this kind of thing exactly but Park Jeup, in addition to being a real sweetheart, is a really good looking dude. I’m not made of steel, you guys.
Tumblr media
Those cheekbones! Those shoulders! Am I alone on this…?
The MNET edit, like all the edits so far, is pretty restrained. I guess they told their editors to not do a whole bag of coke before they sat down to their editing control panel. There are a few instant replays of high notes, but they’re blended in to the background mix so it’s not so jarring to listen to.
All the reaction shots are positive. We see the judges just loving all of them. Vocal Coach Guy even asks, “wait, is this live or playback?” The love seems slightly more focused on Jeup and Donghun, less so on Neon and even less so on Hyukjin, but all four of them get some love, which is nice.
Tumblr media
Solar likes it. I think. I guess? Not sure.
Tumblr media
She’s excited Jeup hit that one high note! She tries to hit it too and kind of can’t!
Backstage, the guys all kind of fall over hearing Jeup’s high note. They almost can’t believe it. Hwanhee kind of hits his own knees with his hands involuntarily.
When they’re done, the judges give them a standing ovation!
Tumblr media
They lavish praise on all of them, again focusing a little less on Hyukjin and a little more on Donghun. They think that the four of them could just debut as a group the way they are. Basically, the judges agree with me, so that’s good.
Vocal Coach Guy points out that Jeup doesn’t just hit high notes -- he sings with emotions. Then he adds that Jeup has nice shoulders, so that was funny. Wendy asks about Jeup’s range, and he says that he can sing any male song, that they’re all in his range.
Dahee says that it was nothing but compliments, so the question is, who could win? Backstage, the boys aren’t sure either. No one floats Hyukjin’s name as top tier, but the other three get named, and the boys think that all four were excellent.
Tumblr media
So, who wins…?
Tumblr media
Baekho, Solar, and Vocal Coach Guy all vote for Donghun from A.C.E.
Eunkwang and Jaehwan vote for Neon, and Wendy votes for Park Jeup.
So, Donghun wins! Vocal Coach Guy lavishes a bit more praise on him, saying that it was an easy choice to pick Donghun because his voice is so good.
And then, oh guys, it’s so sad. Donghun starts to cry, saying it’s the first time he’s been recognized like this.
Tumblr media
The judges are a little uncomfortable because the “win” is kind of a minor one, and they’re surprised at his reaction. It’s like this is what Donghun has been waiting his whole life to hear.
Donghun adds that he didn’t expect to win, that he was focusing on working well with his team.
Backstage, the guys are like, oof, wouldn’t want to have to follow that!
So who is up next? Team Breath. The editors do that thing like they’re trying to trick you into thinking that the performance is starting, but the episode is almost over and this obviously just a teaser. Thanks, editors. Theditors.
Since we’re at the end of the episode, I’ll end the post here. Woo! Finally to the end of the first episode! I'm only two full episodes behind... great! Anyway, I'll see you in the next one, and thanks as always for reading. <3

RDA SciOps and Industry-Sponsored Research
Tumblr media
To understand Science Operations or SciOps and the research conducted on Pandora one has to understand what industry-sponsored research is and note that it differs from government or foundation investments.
Individuals such as Dr. Ian Garvin, who runs the RDA’s Oceanography lab, are conducting research on Pandora under an industry-sponsored research agreement. Under contract, certain terms are negotiated around the specific goals and objectives of his research. Garvin is likely connected to a University and adheres to their research policies. His research, which seeks to understand the Pandoran oceans, is also publishable and his University is provided credit. Many academic articles and books have been written by scientists on Pandora along with popular texts to feed Earth's interest in the exo-moon. However, certain rights to his results or intellectual property may be made available to the sponsor (the RDA) so that they can use them to develop a commercial product. When Garvin discovers that amrita, a substance extracted from the dissected brain of a tulkun, is an agent that stops human aging, that discovery becomes the intellectual property of the RDA to package and profit from.
Other projects such as creating ferals by cutting off the neural queue/kuru of viperwolves and thanators are likely conducted by research teams trying to understand the effects of the neural connection in Pandoran wildlife. However, they are also under contract to try to create a service for the RDA to control these creatures (perhaps for some sort of guard dog protection).
Also relevant is that industry contracts are typically milestone-driven. It starts with an agreed-upon portion of the project funding provided upfront to begin the research while future payments are dependent on defined project goals being achieved. If these timeline markers are not achieved, the sponsor (the RDA) can pull their funding. We see this with Dr. Grace Augustine’s Avatar Program being halted when her team failed to deliver the agreed upon results (she kept asking for more time) and with Garvin’s funding becoming dependent on the quotas of amrita being met.
This firmly plants the pursuit of profit at the expense of Pandora’s population and ecosystem, even if many of the researchers are at the same time conducting valuable research in their respective academic fields. Arguably, some teams may be looking for innovations in sustainable energy, pollution reduction, medicine, and so on which they believe will benefit humanity on Earth or sustain a human population of Pandora. However, this is not disconnected from the RDA’s for-profit mission to use that research for the benefit of their company.
One can see how easily ideological conflicts arise between researchers and the RDA sponsors, and how the RDA's hold on Pandora also has a hold on what type of research is conducted there.

zhang yixing for basic stardom magazine, 21st issue 2023 – interview transcription
THE DREAMER FROM CHANGSHA: An Interview with Chinese Rapper and Performer Lay Zhang
Tagged the “King of China” by his fans in Asia, the highly-praised musician, dancer, actor, and author, Lay Zhang, is rising to glory as he continues to hone his craft and inspire the world with infinite ambition. Headlining MetaMoon last year, the inaugural New York-based music festival, as part of his first-ever solo global tour “Grand Line 2: Infinite Lands” and releasing into 2023 with a remarkable agenda.
While getting his start from the well known K-Pop boy group EXO, Zhang furthered his growth as an individual artist, accumulating over 70 million followers across all social media platforms and magnifying his career through evocative performances and stellar roles in both television and film. His captivating journey has not only forged him into an international superstar, but has also led him to become the highest-ranked Mando-pop star on the Billboard 200 chart in 2018, and the first Chinese artist to enter the iTunes Top 60 in the U.S. with his third solo album Namanana.
Q. You dove headfirst into the music industry after enrolling in the Star Academy talent show in 2005, where you unexpectedly became a finalist in the series. While you never thought you’d ever become an artist, what changed for you during this time in your life?
ZYX. While Star Academy, I was critiqued a few times on stage for not being professional enough. Hearing that gave me the motivation to prove them wrong and become better in all aspects. I like proving people wrong. It’s a good challenge. At the time, I wanted to prove to the judges and fans that I could be better. Becoming the artist I am today wasn’t what I originally had in mind. Looking back, I think I became an artist as I started to improve on my weaknesses. It was not a conscious choice, but rather the desire to prove that I could be better and show everyone that I could be professional.
Q. In 2008, you trained as a performer in South Korea, eventually debuting as a part of the K-pop group EXO. Talk to us about your journey and how you ended up here and now.
ZYX. Going to Korea and leaving both my hometown Changsha and my mother was scary. There were hours and hours of training in a completely foreign environment. Sometimes, after training, I would go downstairs to the practice room and learn how to produce music. It was unusual for a trainee to be that interested in producing music and I was not very good at it. Becoming a dancer for SHINee was a huge milestone for me. It showed me that I was on the right path. Then, when I made it into EXO, I was overjoyed. In the early days, we traveled a lot between China, Japan, and South Korea. There were a lot of happy memories going into the studio and practicing new songs with my members, but nothing could compare to performing with them live. I felt, and still feel, so proud to be an EXO member and to see everything that we accomplished together. When I started doing more solo activities, I found it challenging. All of a sudden I had to do things alone and without my members by my side. It was hard, but it made me grow and helped me to become the person I am today. Now, my schedule is always filled with commercial shoots, television shows, variety shows, recording music, and trying to be an entrepreneur.
Q. After 10 years with EXO, you finally decided to focus on your solo career. How did your experiences with EXO and in South Korea influence the artist, dancer, and businessman you are today?
ZYX. My brothers in EXO gave me so much strength and motivation to become the best artist and person I could be. I did a lot of training in Korea. While it was tough, it gave me the skills I needed to become an artist and dancer that I am today. I reflect on those days often when I help train my trainees. I want to make sure I give them everything I had and more. I met a lot of talented people who took the time to explain things and trained me. I have deep gratitude for that time in my life.
Q. How did you discover your individual sound and personal brand since venturing out on your own? Who and/or what have been some of your most prominent influences?
ZYX. I’m not sure that I have found my sound yet. I like making music and performing. I would love to spend all of my time on stage and in the studio, but I think it’s the same with my brand, where I’m still experimenting and in the process of discovering it. Now that I’m over 30, I have to figure out who I want to be in the next decade. In the past, I’ve taken inspiration from people who have been able to dance, sing, and perform. I also appreciate people who are kind and hardworking.
Q. Sharing your culture with the world is incredibly important to you. Talk to us about the process of merging languages, as well as Eastern and Western influences into your music.
ZYX. I am blessed to have many talented musician friends around the world. Normally, I’ll work with a producer and songwriter in Los Angeles. I’ll have about a week of song camp sessions where we are locked in the studio from noon to midnight. We’ll spend time making music, vibing and dancing nonstop. I also learn a lot of English and we eat a lot of cookies during these sessions. Once we’re done, I’ll take the recording back to China and talk to my team and other creative friends about how we can incorporate Chinese instruments and stories into the music.
Q. How does it feel to be named the “King of China” by your fans and community?
ZYX. I don’t know if I’m the “King of China”. That’s a strong statement. I am just Lay Zhang from Changsha, China. I am a man who loves the people of his country and making music. For me, music is my arena where I get to challenge myself and others. I want to experiment and make better music. Sometimes, I’m down to “battle” people when it comes to music, but it’s always in good spirits and fun.
Q. You are in the process of making new music to be released this year. Talk to us about your creative process. Is there something you do to get into a creative state of mind?
ZYX. Music gets me excited and making music gets me even more excited. I’m always looking for a reason to get into the studio. I don’t really need to put myself in a creative state of mind. I wait all day, sometimes weeks, to get into the studio and explore my ideas. and if I can’t wait any longer, I’ll just pull out my laptop and start making beats whenever I am. I always enjoy testing out my ideas and making music feels like the most natural medium for me to express them right now.
Q. How do you think your music is being experienced by others?
ZYX. I hope people are happy when they listen to my music. When they play songs like “Veil”, I hope they are dancing in a room with their friends and having a good time. I live seeing people so covers and reacting to my music in different ways.
Q. What kind of impact do you hope to achieve through your artistry and career as a whole?
ZYX. I hope that I can inspire to not only go after their dreams, but to also give it their all as they pursue them. Dreams are precious and beautiful. I want people to treat their dreams with the most respect. Respecting your own dreams will make them come true.
Q. In what ways do you ensure you are continuously evolving, both as an artist and the person you are away from the public eye?
ZYX. I have many teachers, mentors, and staff who give me a lot of advice. They’ll tell me the ways in which they think I should work on my vocals or how to handle certain meetings. I always want the people around me to be honest—all facts, no cap. If I’m not good, let me know so that I can get better.
Q. What message would you like to send to the world about who you are and what you stand for?
ZYX. Hi, it’s Lay. I’m a dreamer who hopes that everyone can achieve their dreams in this lifetime.
Q. Can you tell us about a project or piece of work that you’re particularly proud of?
ZYX. I live all my projects like they are my children. No child is better than the other and they all came at important stages of my life. My most recent project was West, and this was fun to release because “Veil”, the title song of the EP, was made almost five years ago, back in 2018. I normally make my records at least a year in advance, so it was great to hear “Veil” again. When I discussed it with my team, we all knew it needed to finally come out. With West, I even made “3 Wishes” on Zoom. We were in little boxes waving to each other and just hoping the internet was good enough so that we could hear all the sounds being made. Then, we’d go offline, do our own parts, and send them. There were times when someone would get knocked offline and then we’d have to wait even longer. The making of West was very fun and different project.
Q. How do you handle creative blocks or moments of self-doubt?
ZYX. To be honest, I don’t have many creative blocks, but that is probably because I’m constantly learning and doing something different. Self-doubt is tough, but I’m always reminded of all the people I have around me who depend on me. I also think about my fans who have supported me this entire time. It gives me the power to know I can’t let them down.
Q&A
Q. Who is your favorite designer?
ZYX. Pier Paolo Piccioli. He has been just a dear friend to me.
Q. What are the last three songs you played?
ZYX. “3 Wishes” by LAY, an unreleased demo I’ve been working on, and “God’s Plan” by Drake.
Q. How would you describe yourself in five words or less?
ZYX. Artistic, determined, passionate, a dreamer, and serious.
Q. What is the most challenging aspects of being and artist of your stature?
ZYX. There is a lot to do. My schedule has always been packed and full of activities. It’s a good thing because it means people still like me and want to see me. As I get older, I know I’ll get less popular, and fewer people will care about my music and career. It’s a big scary to be totally honest. It’s something that I will have to learn to deal with.
Q. What would be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
ZYX. If I wasn’t an artist today, I would probably be a music teacher. I would definitely still be doing something related to music.
Q. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
ZYX. I want to work with people who are innovating and pushing themselves creatively. I feel so inspired by people who are able to produce, write and sing. I really aspire to work with open-minded people.

"Zavala's beard!" (a joke phrase started by Hunters but currently popular with Titans)
"Traveler's shards!" (an exclamation of surprise or dismay)
"Lucy in the Sky" (one of the more colorful nicknames for the Traveler)
"an armory of Titans" / "a flock of Warlocks" / "a gaggle [or clutter] of Hunters" (joke phrases to refer to groups of Guardians)

"You can't fly for two factions." (aka "you can't serve two masters")
"You can take a Hunter to the Cryptarchy but you can't make them read." (aka "you can lead a horse to water...")
"May you always have a sharp knife." (a sentiment of well-wishes between Hunters)
• "May you always have a Crow's blade" is a common alternate used by Awoken Hunters
"May the Traveler bless your days and brighten your ways." (a farewell blessing similar to House Light's May the Light provide.)
Daatma ("star soul," an Earthborn term for all Awoken; however younger generations prefer Tulatma, meaning "bridged soul")

"The Hub" - a commercial center popular with Exos and modified humans
"Rivendell" - an Awoken residential area; non-City Awoken think the name is a nod to Riven, who built the Dreaming City, but it isn't 😉
"Coulior d'Étoiles" - an Awoken neighborhood popular with both City and non-City residents, due to its showcasing of Earthborn culture. also known as the Awoken Quarter.
"The Outskirts" - the partially undeveloped land between the City Walls and the City itself, which was meant to act as a buffer in case of attack. some suburbs (mostly Guardian and Tower personnel housing) began to spread into the Outskirts after the Red War.

I started typing this whole thing on mobile and couldn't figure out how to put a break in and I refuse to update the app. Fuck it. You are scrolling past this whole damn thing. Unfollow me. This is all I'm gonna be talking about for the next two weeks.
Exo needs to break up. They have needed to break up. That was my hot take I had been saying I'd eventually share but I never got around to it, and now it's a lot more apparent. Not that I thought this was going to happen. I thought that when I finally posted this, someone might be mad about it, but in wake of CBX's lawsuit I don't think anyone's going to be surprised to hear it.
I was sure exo members were done suing SM entertainment a long time ago. It's been 9 years since Kris and Luhan filed their lawsuits, both of whom won. It's been 8 years since Tao's hiatus, and almost 8 since he filed his lawsuit months later, which he ended up losing despite never rejoining exo. I became a fan of exo during Call Me Baby promotions when Tao was still dancing with a broken leg. I was 15 at the time, about to turn 16. EXO scandals were extremely fresh and ongoing. But those three are so far in the past now. Lay quietly decided not to renew recently, but he hadn't been able to appear with the group for 5 years so, yeah. No surprise. But I really thought it was all done when EXO-M was done for.
Well, I can tell you why I'd been thinking for a while EXO should break up. It's because they're really a thing of the past, and essentially after Love Shot, it felt like there was nowhere to go from there.
That felt like the last breath of their 5 year long prime. Don't get me wrong, it was awesome. EXO have hit after hit after hit, think of the absolute best most addictive song by your favorite pop artist, and EXO have a discography of mostly those. But they haven't grown and changed artistically or commercially as a group. They've been around 11 years, they're in their 30s now, and I don't even think most of them have the heart to revitalize their prime like Super Junior did after their military hiatus was over. Maybe a couple of them have it in them to do the pop star thing for their entire careers, but I didn't think that like, Sehun or Chanyeol were necessarily passionate about creating new music for the rest of their career. Chen has a family now and that's also something I'd like the rest of exo to afford without their huge commercial group getting in the way of that. The only one I felt for sure would not be done anytime soon was Baekhyun. I thought he'd be the new Kangta of the group, sticking around when EXO were dormant and fizzled out. I never thought SM would actually let them break up, like H.O.T did when I was a baby. But yeah, Baekhyun leaving shocks me the most. Not that I blame him. I do fully believe the allegations made in the lawsuit as SM have had such a shady reputation.
Looking at SM's pre-EXO boy groups, one might say EXO were the main successor to Super Junior, because, obviously, both groups debuted with 12 people. Large groups like that weren't really a thing in kpop before Super Junior debuted. Additionally, Han Geng of Suju was one of the first Chinese kpop idols. In 2008, two more Chinese members were added to the sub unit Super Junior-M, which released Mandarin versions of pre-existing and original Korean Super Junior songs. Hm, this sounds familiar. I only just built up a better case for the EXO/SJ argument. Diana and I talk about this sometimes though; I once made an argument that I think EXO was more a successor to TVXQ/DBSK (Tong Vfang Xien Qi/Dong Bang Shin Ki), which I would have forgotten saying if she never brought up that one time i said it ever again.
In July of 2009, JYJ threw the first brick at SM Entertainment I mean TVXQ's members Kim "Hero" Jaejoong, Park "Micky" Yoochun and Kim "Xiah" Junsu filed a lawsuit against SM for contract termination, claiming they had been coerced into slave contracts as minors. They were 22-23 at the time, TVXQ having debuted on December 26th, 2003. The three of them won the lawsuit, signed to C-Jes Entertainment and formed the new group, JYJ, of just the three of them. It was assumed the original five piece was dead by that point, but surprisingly, in 2010, Jung "U-Know" Yunho and Shim "Max" Changmin chose to stay at SM and continue TVXQ as a duo.
This whole thing is arguably the most significant scandal in the 30-year history of SM. TVXQ had been SM's biggest success to date and some argue they and Boa still are. Your faves wouldn't have cracked Japan without the efforts of those two, and if kpop didn't reach Japan in the early 2000s, the entertainment industry in a small East Asian country wouldn't have become huge across the entire planet---and frankly, if TVXQ hadn't been big internationally, they'd have been done for because SM had them blacklisted from Korean television for a decade.
Han Geng of Super Junior actually did file for contract termination shortly after JYJ did, also for mistreatment. As did Luhan, Tao and Kris as we've already acknowledged. But all four of them could move to the entertainment industry in China. Sure, you're always going to lose something by leaving as big a group as EXO, Super Junior or TVXQ, but SM hasn't been sued by its Korean idols since JYJ. Baekhyun, Xiumin and Chen know that they're putting at least as much on the line. And now, like TVXQ, more than half of EXO are no longer in the group, and the majority of the run for the both of them has had this cloud of mistreatment over their reputations. They were also both so unstoppably huge and popular.
I was in elementary school for DB5K's prime, and there were fans of kpop in the west but I can't tell you what their success across Asia looked like as someone who wasn't there. But I can tell you, between 2015-2016 when kpop gradually started to become very big, EXO for a time were bringing in more people to kpop than A Particularly Famous Group in the West I Have No Interest in Naming Because I Don't Want Their Fucking Fans Derailing My Post With Unrelated Discourse While I'm Not Even Talking About Them. Just believe me there was a time when EXO were way more popular in the west than Said Band I Decline to Specify, the eclipse that happened was gradual, and to my understanding EXO continued to be the biggest thing in Asia despite that another one eventually cracked America more and I'm not denying that they did. Point is, EXO coming first was important to all of that, because I and several others wouldnt have heard of the one kpop group if EXO didnt get us all into kpop first from 2013-15/16.
That all said now, this was all very much not how I'd wanted EXO to actually end. This is crashing and burning. Much like TVXQ, EXO is not going to be able to have a reunion after this, because they'll never receive SM's blessing to work together. I mean, EXO-M never would. 12 member EXO hardly lasted for two years though and their prime was very new when people started leaving, so to be honest, I don't know if the kids getting into EXO in the 2020s would really care to see Luhan, Tao, and Someone Sitting In Prison Whose Name I've Uttered More Than I'd Like To.
But in a similar vain, while DB5K originally split into two, JYJ are all off in different directions now. Yoochun was fired. Junsu left C-Jes and made his own label. Jaejoong did the same recently. Could you tell I listen TVXQ? But yeah, now that there are more than 3-4 people departed from EXO, they've got former members going in a lot of different directions. Someone already said it but I hope Xiumin follows Luhan back now. Back in my day Xiuhan were so cute.
Also, since I managed not to slip this into the post anywhere.... these guys have been showing up to work. Every damn day they've been showing up to work, that's another reason why it's so shocking. Chen dropped a song days ago and Baekhyun has been doing shows, posting dance practices, EXO have been appearing together for their 11th anniversary and supposed upcoming comeback. Whaaat a slap in the face. I support CBX 100% though and you should too.

Next Bangtan Gal Chapters! :)
Tumblr media
Hey! This is to show what's coming next as I edit the chapters I made years ago. When I do officially make it to the last chapter I stopped at, updates will be slow since I will be back writing again but I'm excited to continue the story. If you are curious to see what's to come, here are the next set of chapters I will be working on. There are a few more chapters after this before I begin making new chapters but if you want to be surprised, go on ahead and just ignore this.
I do plan to put suggestive and smutty stuff in this. I don't think I am the best at it but it's a challenge I'm willing to accept and work hard in writing so stay tuned and bear with me! :)
-----
You Were Worth The Wait (Jennie tells Jungkook exactly how she feels about him)
------
It's About Time (Jennie and Jungkook officially start dating! Jennie becomes a guest judge on Produce 101. While on break, BTS spend time doing leisure activities. Jennie and Jungkook celebrate their first Valentine's Day)
--------

White Day (JenKook get caught making out during a commercial filming. JenKook celebrate their first White Day together. Jennie continues to be mentored by G-Dragon as he helps her prepare for the Fire comeback)
------
FIRE (BTS film for Fire. Jennie hangs with Layla and thinks about when BTS went to film BTS NOW 3 and the Save Me MV.)
-------
Prom (Jennie helps Jungkook when he gets sick before promotions for Fire. Jennie gets bummed when she sees Prom videos and photos on social media since she never experienced it before. Wanting to cheer her up, Bangtan thinks of a way for her to experience her own Prom) (Thinking of adding some suggestive or smutty stuff in this one! Still pondering as I edit and add stuff!)
-------
Meeting Shawn Mendes (BTS film for Running Man again. Jennie goes back to America for interviews with Buzzfeed and iHeartRadio. She supports and joins Angelina for the BBMAs and finally meets her celeb crush, Shawn Mendes.)
-------
Taking Things A Little Further (Jennie returns to Korea as BTS prepare for their Festa. Jennie hangs with Big Bang. Jennie comforts Jungkook and calls out the Flower Crew cast for how they mistreated him during filming. JenKook start a Twitch gaming channel together) (Thinking of this being a little suggestive or smutty. I'll think about it when I get there because of one specific scene)
------
BTS Festa 2016 (BTS celebrate their Festa for 2016)
K-Con 2016 (BTS have a horror movie night as a member pranks them by scaring everyone. Jin and Jennie film promos for their upcoming wrestling match against each other. Jennie and Jungkook hang with her family and announce they are dating to her parents as Jungkook works hard to get the approval of her mom)
-------
I Need You On This (BTS rent out a movie theater to watch Captain America Civil War. Jennie's dream which she had been talking about for years finally comes true. Jen has the honor to film with Yoon Mirae for the first episode of Celebrity Womance. Jennie and Jungkook spend time with his family. Jennie supports AGUST D's mixtape)

hiiii today's reminder is i listened to beatbox (the album not just the song I'm not a sociopath) today and honestly. it's a shame that dream's title tracks are the worst songs in the album. this isn't always the case, i mean hello future and mfal but those might be the only exceptions. and i know they're super popular now and a lots more people are listening to the entire albums but it's just SUCH a shame. like wayv gets good title tracks that you'll love instantly and great b sides. 127 gets… let's call them attention-grabbing title tracks that grow on you and great b sides. dream gets the worst of both, just sorta mediocre title tracks that you don't immediately fall in love with in the first listen but also you're not particularly liking them more as you listen to them more. candy had the nostalgia element, but their last few title tracks just haven't stood out to me musically and it's a damn shame, for the quality of their b sides. like better than gold is still a solid favourite of mine. irreplaceable, walk you home, 123. hell all of the b sides off hot sauce and glitch mode are SO good. just… what a shame
Hii, You know what I have only listened istj once then never again, it's not bad it's just not really second listenable. Beatbox definitely was an against my will kind of song. I only intentionally listened to it like twice. But I did really like Glitch mode like it's a vibe definitely was replayed. I also did really like Hot Sauce and Hello future. But I think the last dream title track I loved loved was Ridin, oh damn that was a while ago. But Ridin is definitely one of my favorite dream title track. Wayv definitely wins the lottery with title tracks cause they have never disappointed. SM drops the ball alot with Wayv but their songs are always a masterpiece. 127, there's only been like two missed for me that's 2baddies and Superhuman. I know a lot of people like superhuman and its wild it's beside 2baddies. To be fair 2baddies only loses me at the chorus. But I actually dislike superhuman more than 2baddies I know I know. But I'm actually upset that's the song they promoted in the US. It didn't sound like 127. It sounded like supershineexo and I just couldn't vibe with it. I like NCTs unique sound cause it's still versatile but very them. Like favorite I like it I don't love it cause to me it sounds similar to exo. Like Fact Check just from the chorus oh That's 127. I think dream feels like they have an idea of their sound but is still figuring the details. Wayv pretty much has a specific sound, and 127 has there's. Dream the structure is there but it's not solid they still have to find their exact sound. Their concept was figured out but as they grow up that concept has to as well. I don't think anyone wants to see 25 to 28 year old men singing wheels on the bus. 21 to 24 is already too far.
Also I just saw a commercial for the movie Priscilla, and I didn't feel any need to watch the Elvis movie but this one actually looks really good and I'd rather see Priscilla's point a view. On the podcast Just Trish with Trisha Paytas when she said I don't care about men's stories I felt that. I don't like movies with male leads all my favorite movies are female led like Clueless, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, Sabrina the teenage witch , oh I love sex and the city. I just prefer female driven movies and shows. I literally only watch modern family for Gloria, Lily, Alex and Hayley. Oh also Cam. Love Cam. The exception is Will & Grace but I'm really just there for Grace, Karen and Jack. Sorry that was random but that thought happened while I was replying to your ask.

people love to be miserable but I think exo will be fine, so many things have happened but they're still one of the top kpop groups I just think people need to have a bit more faith and believe in the members more, like they're all successful in their individual fields and yixing is literally one of the top artists in china and has his own company like not alot of idols are around for ten years so like you said they obviously have atleast some business understanding and are intelligent so we shouldn't underestimate them and believe they'll do whats best for themselves
Also when you were talking about how they're well connected just made me think about how isolated it feels like bts are to the korean entertainment industry in comparison to alot of idols in their gen, I feel like hybe did it on purpose so they wouldn't be able to survive without them same with how they probably won't let any of the members shine properly for a solo
Like this might be a stupid example but even like the comedians and mcs like yu jaesok/lee soogeun and stuff like having connections like that means they'd bring you on their shows and you'd be seen on tv alot which I think is important for the general public to remember you exist and to promote whatever you're doing like alot of 2nd gen idols are apart of the main cast for all these variety shows for a reason but bts rlly feel isolated compared to like so many exo members or someone like seungkwan from svt
This is really messy and might not make sense but what I'm saying is I just feel like they don't have connections like the way it seems alot of other groups their age or 3nd gen groups do which is a shame because it would help them out in the long run(hobi is not included in this beacuse i think hes a bit smarter with the party and whatnot)😭😭😭😭
lmao omg yeah i mean bts have isolated themselves in a creative and commercial silo like no one wants to be near them bc of their deranged fans and the company doesn't want to share them with anyone so the profit stays in the family.... but i think now that they'll start enlisting and each doing their own thing they'll start making their own connections. which they are in dire need of
as for exo they are literally the industry's darlings like everyone wants to work with them and everybody talks about how nice and humble people they are.... they have so many opportunities and collabs offered to them not bc of clout or their company getting them for them. they thrive in spite of sm doing everything in their power to kill them off. it's so funny bts and exo are literally opposite sides of the spectrum

SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research. The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network. Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor. Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News. He wrote, produced and hosted StarStuff from its inception, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Neilsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually. However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage. Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently. StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016. Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, tripling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is now published three times a week and is also available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Kpop Game
tagged by the sweetest @tyong-blr, thank you soo much 💚💚 •what was your ultimate bias doing at the exact moment they became your ult? Mark rapping in Jopping, Chanyeol playing Moonlight by exo in the freaking guitar 😭😭 •if you were stranded on an island, which idol would you want to be stranded with, and which one would you wanna toss back into the ocean? OK hear me out, i would need someone very strategist and smart to get us out of there so haechan would be ideal. I would toss Hendery because I have the slightest impression that he would be the kind of desperate person who would run and scream on the island saying that we were going to die and that would be exactly what I wouldn't need! i love him btw okay
•name the kpop song you go to when a non-kpop friend hands you the aux. Monster by exo. You can’t get wrong with this one.
•alternatively, if you’ve had aux privileges revoked due to kpop, name the song that took away your right to have the aux. Love me now by nct 127 because everyone needs to know how GOOD this song truly is!
•if your bias hadn’t debuted in their group, what other group could you see them being in (and why)? I can picture Chanyeol in nct 127 mainly because he would be the oldest and i would love to see him act like the maknae along with haechan but of course he as a rapper with mark and taeyong would probably kill me, but i would die happy.
•what’s the funniest thing your ult has ever done? Chanyeol trying to imitate Kai's perfect ballerina spin on the show and falling on the ground really weird. I swear I have to see this at least 50 times
•have you ever been biaswrecked into having more than one bias? if so, who was it, and who are your current biases in that group? Dude, I stan 4 groups. The suffer it’s real. Got7: I started with Jackson but then Youngjae and Yugyeom caught my attention. Youngjae it’s my official bias. Exo: Chanyeol but then Sehun appeared, so i can’t choose between them. Nct: Oh God... Ok, so Taeyong was my first bias and Jaehyun my first love. But Mark, Jeno and Haechan are my current biases because i can’t pick just one in nct. Bts: Jimin it’s my first and only one bias since the beginning. •name an idol collaboration you would love to see that hasn’t happened yet. You have no idea how much i would love to see nct and got7 doing something together. It could be any 15 second commercial. •what’s one trait in particular that you share with a bias? i.e same laugh, same starbucks order, etc. Mark and I make jokes that literally no one pays attention to or laughs at because our sense of humor is beyond all human understanding. •describe your worst date ever but replace the name of your date with your biaswrecker. Literally all of them lol Okay so, I hate horror movies and I hate going to the cinema and not watching the movie I paid for (tickets in my country are expensive, okay). So I had a group of friends who wanted me to start dating Jeno and they thought going to the movies would be the perfect opportunity for that. We went in a large group to watch The Conjuring 1, we both stood in the middle between our friends and we hugged each other by the arm but when the movie started I was so scared that I couldn't turn my face to the screen let alone kiss Jeno in front of everyone. I spent almost two hours yelling in Jeno's ear with my face in my hands. I didn't kiss Jeno and I didn't watch the movie, and I wasted the money. •if your favorite kpop song was a flavor, what would it taste like? Be there for you by nct dream and would taste like nutella •what group would you most want to play cards against humanity with? Nct dream, we have the same mental age. •name a random animal off the top of your head. what idol do you associate with this animal?   🐥 Jisung, because I was listening to My first and last and remembered his blonde hair •what’s the last comeback you stayed up all night for? DYE by got7. •and finally, what’s one song in your kpop playlist that you would totally lose your mind over if it came on in a grocery store? Beatbox by nct dream, I don't know how to dance at all the choreography but I would probably get kicked out tagging: my lil sis @jaehunnyy and everyone who wants to participate in this one, it’s pretty fun!
