“WHY did that alien ambassador just call me ‘peasant’??”
“Sorry, sorry, it’s a problem with the translation software.”
“What kind of problem? Am I about to insult him by accident too? I want it to be on purpose.”
“No, it’s just that the software had trouble with root words and etymology, comparing our concepts to theirs. They don’t have a word for ‘god,’ you see, and—”
“What the blazes does that have to do with it?”
“Look. The word ‘human’ can be translated as ‘person who lives on the ground, or the dirt, or the Earth, and who isn’t a god.’”
“So how did that—”
“It turned into ‘person who lives in the dirt and has no power over others.’ The closest they had when repeating it back through the translator was ‘peasant.’”
“That is the stupidest thing I’ve heard all week.”
“Why do you think I’ve been pressing for everyone to actually learn the language, instead of relying on the translator?”
“Well, if I make it through this meet-and-greet without having to throw or take a punch, I might take you up on that. Stick close. If somebody says something else dumb, I’m turning to you.”
“Don’t look now; the ambassador’s coming back.”
“Great.”

got a curious question about the heroes— what languages can they speak? or understand in case they can't speak it for whatever reason?
Most of them just speak Hylian and Hylian Sign (bc sign language is considered a different language bc it has different structure and grammar even tho we don't write it out like that) but here are the heroes that we know are at least a little multi lingual.
Legend could call himself a fucking polymath at this point. He knows Hylian and Hylian Sign fluently ofc, and can read/write Lorulean since it's the same as Hylian, just mirrored. He can read Mudoran but isn't sure about the pronunciation since it's a dead language in his time, and is at least conversational in Holodruman, Labrynnan, and Subrosian. He's very interested in learning Gerudo currently, so that might be another one added to the list eventually.
Cinder knows Lorulean fluently since he's from there (written Hylian was the real challenge for him but he got it).
Time knows some Gerudo and Gerudo Sign, probably just conversationally, but he's illiterate so he can't read or write anything.
Four knows Picori fluently bc of the jabber fruit.
Hyrule is fluent in Fey, though they shouldn't speak it around normal people if they want those individuals to stay sane.
Fae probably knows some Fey as well, just what she needed to for getting through her quest.
Twilight knows how to read Twili, and Midna has tried to teach him some, but he has trouble getting around his accent for pronunciation.
Wild knows Sheikah, both ancient and modern, and would like to know the Zora/Rito mother tongue but it's p much impossible for them to produce or even decipher what all those clicks and whistles mean. Sidon appreciates his little Hylian's desire to connect but it just won't happen and he thinks them trying (and failing horrifically) is very cute.
Odyssey is fluent in Gerudo! And he's probably trying very hard to learn Gerudo Sign, but not quite fluent in it yet. He can talk to his boyfriend in his native tongue and that's good enough for now. (And on that note, Legacy probably knows both Sheikah and Gerudo.)
Champion probably knows at least some sign for all the major races just in case. He takes his guard job very seriously, and being nonverbal needs some workarounds in case not everyone knows Hylian Sign. He doesn't wanna end up playing charades.
Wind probably has picked up some Rito birdcalls, both bc he's friends w Medli and Komali, and having an alternative to pirate code with Tetra can be useful. Nothing like. Truly substantial tho.
Sky has maybe like. Some Lanayru mining robot translations lying around in a book somewhere in case he needs it.
Wars knows bits and pieces of a certain language his mother used, doesn't think very much about it. He should maybe talk to Legend....
And that's about it! TLDR most of them know at least snippets of another language according to need.

Okay if you're still taking prompts how about this: Aizawa finds it very, very attractive when his friend Mic speaks in other languages. And since Mic does so all the time, it's starting to get difficult for Aizawa to keep his secret.
Ah, my favourite customer! Good day to you! Ah, some pining Aizawa you say? Mic speaking foreign languages, you ask? Ho ho, I certainly have some of that up my sleeve! But how about… some ADDED ANGST…
“I call bullshit.”
Shouta watches as Nemuri points an accusatory finger at Hizashi. He leans away from it, back into his seat, but his expression is clearly doing its best not to appear threatened. The chatter of the pub drifts around them but the world seems like its shrunk to their table, and their table alone.
“What, you don’t believe me? What’s there not to believe!”
“You do not speak eight languages.”
Hizashi bats Nemuri’s hand away from his face, leans over his half finished pint of Ichiban with a challenging grin. “Do, too.”
“You can swear in eight languages. You speak two fluently, one semi-fluently, the others-”
“Yo, what? What do you take me for, an amateur? Come on man!”
“Prove it,” Kan demands, slamming down his glass on the table. He doesn’t usually join post work drinks, and neither does All Might- especially after the mess that was last time. Now, however, the five of them are supposedly ‘enjoying’ a drink to start the weekend.
Shouta may be the only one not enjoying himself.
“How can he prove it, you won’t know what he’s saying,” Nemuri says a little belligerently, leaning across the table towards Kan and almost knocking over her and All Might’s drinks. She’s already quite a bit drunker than the rest of them.
“Puedo probártelo, solo dame algo que decir,” Hizashi announces.
Shouta sighs and stares into the top of his beer. He swirls it round and watches it foam up.
“What did you say?”“I said ‘I can prove it, just give me something to say’.” He’s cradling the back of his head with his hands and leaning back of his seat with a smug, beaming smile.
“But how can you prove that’s what you said, if none of us speak…” Nemuri trails off.
“Spanish.”
“Right!”
“You can’t, you’ll just have to trust that I’m a genius, multi-lingual sex god.” Nemuri bursts into unforgiving laughter, smacking the table. Hizashi glares at her, spluttering when no one comes to his defence. “Wh- It’s not that unbelievable!”
“I’m not sure about the last bit,” All Might says uneasily- Yagi. He should really consider him Yagi, here, but that’s still too strange. “But I can certainly believe that you can speak multiple languages. Your English is perfect, and I can at least attest to that.”
Shouta maintains his attention on his beer, drumming his fingers along the glass. His knee bounces up and down under the table.
“What else you got?” Nemuri leers, and Shouta isn’t sure whether she’s trying to give everyone a clear view down her cleavage, but it’s certainly managed to fluster All Might- Yagi- who pointedly and unsubtly turns away and goes red in the face. But then, Yagi gets flustered by most things.
“Well, there’s no point proving that I can speak English,” he starts, in English, as he leans across the table to meet Nemuri, narrowing her eyes at her. Then, in a language Shouta doesn’t recognise, “но, может быть, если я буду говорить по-русски, это произведет на вас впечатление.”
Shouta’s leg continues to bounce up and down, and his nail click more noisily against his frosted beer glass.
“Was that Russian?” Yagi asks.
“Sure was-”
“I think that deserves some of my magic cocktail-” Nemuri croons, forcing the drink in Hizashi’s direction- who, by habit has learnt to duck this way and that to avoid it.
“Japanese, Russian, English, Spanish,” Kan counts on his fingers. “You’re a goddamn show off, Mic.”
“Well, I mean-” and then Hizashi begins to rattle something off in Mandarin. The others respond with equal measures of awe, Nemuri teasing him for being a nerd, as she usually does. Shouta remains quiet and stares at the rings of condensation on the table left from his glass.
It’s not that he doesn’t find it interesting to hear Hizashi speak other languages. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. He finds it altogether too interesting. It’s stupid really; since high school, he’s been able to keep his inconvenient feelings for Hizashi under wraps. But the moment he starts speaking confidently in another language, the moment he reminds Shouta just how smart he is and how good he sounds speaking-
“You speak Italian, too, right?” Nemuri prompts, apparently forgetting her previous disbelief and poking him in the forehead. “Come on then, lover-boy let’s hear it.”
Shouta sinks lower in his seat. He feels sixteen all over again.
And then he looks up at Hizashi, and he really shouldn’t have done. Because he’s looking straight back at him. With an intensity in his eyes that only Shouta can see, behind all the amusement.
“Non direi che sono un amante. Sono innamorato del mio migliore amico e non riesco a convincerlo ad amarmi.”
Shouta’s fists clench at his sides and his throat goes dry. His knee stops bouncing up and down but his heart is certainly racing. It doesn’t matter what he just said, it never does, because Shouta doesn’t need to understand.
Enough of this. Enough.
His chair scrapes loudly against the floor as he abruptly removes himself from the table. He’s distantly aware of his beer sloshing over the edge and spilling over the table, can hear Nemuri call after him, but he ignores it. He storms towards the exit, through the curtain door, and steps outside. It’s horribly cold, but blissfully cooler than the overwhelming heat inside the pub. His breath clouds in front of his face. It smells like cigarettes out here. There are a couple of people chatting in the quiet alley, the power-line cables overhead dripping with the afternoon’s rain. Restaurant signs shine neon in the puddles.
He collapses against the wall and squeezes his eyes shut. Immediately, the regret and embarrassment of storming out settles over him. Even after all these years, he struggles to keep his cool. Even now, at the ripe old age of thirty one, he wants to storm out and slam his bedroom door like a teenager.
As if Hizashi had purposefully made him do that.
Shouta sighs, rubs his face with his hands. He can hear the drip-drip-drip of the edge of the pub’s shelter. There’s a strip of dry ground for about half a meter, before it stops and the ground glistens with moisture. He stares at the floor.
A few weeks ago, he’d stood up in front of hundreds of reporters, on national television, and he’d managed to keep his feelings under control then. So why not now? Why was it that all Hizashi had to do was-
The familiar, towering presence of Yagi appears beside him, a great head poking comically out of the pub curtain.
“Ah. I thought you might have gone home.”
Shouta looks at him, rolls his head lazily back to its original position, staring ahead at the passers by. Friday night in Mustafu can be rowdy, but this part of town is quiet. It’s why the Yuuei teachers prefer it. He ignores the way Yagi takes a spot beside him, leaning against the wall.
He knows Yagi wants to be his friend. He reckons he could be a bit more accommodating, but he’s never given anyone that kind of allowance. The people closest to him appreciate that and see beyond the small talk. They don’t see a reserved hero with a resting bitch-face that needs to be loosened up.
He doesn’t look at Yagi, but he can tell he’s staring. It’s getting pretty irritating.
“I was in love with my best friend for a few years.”
Shouta doesn’t move, feels that any kind of movement would someone confirm Yagi’s words. He goes very still, teeth clenching.
“In America. Looking back, I wouldn’t have changed any of it. He ended up having a beautiful family who I care for a lot. My only regret was I never told him. Now it’s too late.”
Shouta only listens silently, pretending that this is just some unexpected confession from a colleague after a few drinks. Even if Yagi doesn’t drink. Even if Shouta’s the one who’s had a few and can feel the light-headedness lift his inhibitions from his mind.
There’s a deep sigh a foot above him. Yagi’s head turns down to look at him again. “Aizawa, I know it’s not my place-”
“It’s not,” he interrupts, and he wishes he could control himself for one goddamn second. “And I really don’t want to talk about this.”
“Hm.” Yagi nods once, looks in the same direction as Shouta, neither of them really seeing anything. “Alright. But don’t forget what I said, Aizawa.”
Shouta feels a sudden flush of irritation at the tone. There’s something in his words that his brain can’t help but interpret that as patronising. He looks away from Yagi when he says, “We’re not friends. You don’t need to dole out advice for something you don’t know about.”
A quiet settles, and the sound of the drip-drip-drip and pub clamour fills in the gap that gapes between them.
Shouta closes his eyes. “I’m sorry. That wasn’t-”
Surprisingly, Yagi chuckles. “It’s fine. If I were offended by the things you say and do, I wouldn’t be trying to hard to be your friend.”
Shouta feels his chest pinch slightly at that. Manipulative bastard. He looks up at him with a wan glare, and Yagi laughs again. The laughter quickly dwindles to a sigh.
“I’ll keep my nose out of your business, I’m sorry for overstepping. It’s hard not to when you recognise a situation like that from your own experiences.”
“Sure,” Shouta replies, dully. And suddenly, the image of him slouching against the wall, sulking, communicating monosyllabically, reminds him an awful lot of his newly enrolled hero-course student. The realisation makes him rub his face wearily, the urge to laugh rising within him. “Shit. I’m drunk.”
“Says the man who boldly claims that he never gets drunk.”
“Don’t listen to anything he says when he’s drunk, he never knows what’s going on.”
Shouta and Yagi turn to see Hizashi leaning out of the doorway. He steps fully outside, gaze fixed on Shouta. He looks away. The conversation meets an abrupt halt, and Yagi pushes himself off from the wall, awkwardly lingering between the two of them.
“I suppose since you’re out here, I should make sure Kayama isn’t trying to drown Kan in alcohol.”Hizashi looks up in acknowledgement and laughs, the corresponding smile a bit too strained for Shouta’s liking. “Yeah, man, you should do that. No one wants death by vodka cranberry.”
Yagi nods, looks between the two of them for a long, uncomfortable moment. Shouta has to reason with himself not to kick him in the shins. And then, he disappears inside the pub, leaving Hizashi to look at him a few feet away. Those eyes are wide and alarmingly… alarmed. He crosses his arms in front of his chest, perhaps against the cold, perhaps in defence. Maybe Shouta’s looking a lot stormier than he realised.
“Yo.”
“Hey.”
Hizashi shuffles awkwardly. “You OK? You kind of disappeared suddenly. I’d ask if it was something I said, but I know you don’t speak Russian or Italian.” He pauses, eyes widening impossibly more. “Right?”
Shouta looks away, stares at his feet. “Right.”
He knows that Hizashi is waiting for some kind of explanation, but he has no idea how to provide it.
“It’s hard to explain,” is what he ends up, uselessly, opting for.
Hizashi nods slowly, and the disappointment in his face is both confusing and terrible. It’s half lit up with the light from inside the pub. There’s a burst of incongruous laughter from within, and it sets Shouta on edge.
“Ask me what I said,” Hizashi whispers.
Shouta looks at him, blinking dumbly. He wishes he hadn’t started drinking tonight. “What?”
Hizashi’s gaze is so intense that Shouta almost wants to back away. “Ask me what it was I said in there. That last bit.”
Shouta doesn’t understand, but he doesn’t bother trying to ask him to elaborate. He doesn’t know why Hizashi’s asking him to play this game, and it’s annoying, and he’s tired, and he asks anyway because he finds it damn near impossible to deny him.
“Go on. What did you say.”
Hizashi doesn’t reply. He just stares at him, eyebrows pinched and eyes shining, lips pressed together nervously- in a way Shouta hasn’t seen in a while. And that concerns him. He tries to find the words to ask what’s wrong, to figure out what this is all about.
But Hizashi stops those thoughts in their tracks when he takes two brisk steps towards Shouta and kisses him.
His immediate reaction is to tense up, shoulders rising to his ears and mouth pursing in defence. And maybe it’s because he’s wondered what this would be like for years, maybe it’s because he’s been in love with Hizashi for just as long, or maybe it’s because he trusts him implicitly- probably all of the above. Whatever the reason, a moment later, Shouta finds himself kissing back. Hand shakily, hesitantly holding Hizashi’s arm to keep him there, for as long as possible.
Hizashi breaks away, takes a sharp intake of breath. Expression frantic and eyes searching for his attention.
“That’s what I was saying. Back inside.”
“Huh,” Shouta says lamely.
For all the languages that Hizashi can speak, he seems speechless now. And Shouta has no problem with that as he kisses him once more.

MALAYSIAN MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX 2018
This weekend Malaysia was hosting the 18th round of the 2018 MotoGP Championship season.
It marked our 5 th time attending a MotoGp event since we began going to races in 2012 and our 4 th different host country. MotoGP series is a world class event attracting race fans from all over the world. The best racers from around the world compete in 3 different classes of motorcycles.
The Moto3 class features 250cc engine powered motos from various manufacturers such as Honda, KTM, Mahindra. The racers in this class are usually of younger age, some as young as 16 years old, which is minimum age required to compete. These young racers evolved from racing series in their home countries such as Asia Talent Cup series or Repsol CEV challenge or Red Bull rookies. This class is very highly disputed as the top rated racers in this class look to get a contract in next level racing class of Moto 2 and top level MotoGP. These motorcycles are fairly evenly matched as power output is concerned and drafting plays a major part of winning in this series. They are literally in many cases handlebar to handlebar for the entire duration of the race. The last race in Australia, there were 14 motorcycles crossing the finish line with only 0.900 seconds separating them. In this modern age of technology, transponders on the bikes can keep up with the non stop position changes. While the racers compete for points in the championship, so do the manufacturers and the various teams. The stakes are high as companies sponsor teams to promote their services and products to an ever increasing following of motorcycle racing fans. Motorcycle companies as well as a multitude of moto related parts and accessories have obviously stakes in sponsorship but even companies such as airlines , breweries , insurance an event some government tourism agencies join in on sharing the multi million fan base all over the world. It certainly works for me as I encourage companies that I see that are part of this series.
Singha the official beer and my official supply girl !
Tumblr media
The Moto2 motorcycle class is composed of different chassis manufacturers powered by the exact same engine. For almost 10 years they have been using Honda CBR600RR based engines. The engines are provided by Honda, they are sealed as to avoid any internal modifications. I cannot recall any engine failure in this category. With power being the same for all bikes, chassis setup and rider talent is what sets apart first place from last.
The MotoGP class, is the top level feature class. It is the main event that attracts the biggest names and has the highest stakes. While each team has to respect certain requirements and given set of rules to promote the highest level of competition, it also allows for some non factory teams to access to higher level of competiteveness by allowing for certain privileges.
Attending a MotoGP weekend is a very special and rewarding experience. Not only is the level of competition the highest in the world, it is utterly exciting to witness the talent these racers have, their courage, their sportsmanship and very importantly the respect they have for the race fans that follow them and cheer them on and support them.
When the MotoGP rolls in to a host city , there is no way to deny the energy that it brings to the city and surroundings.
In Kuala Lumpur the entire city taken by the MotoGP fever , sparked by the fact that the local hero Hafizh Syarin was to be the first MotoGP level racer to compete on home soil. Personnel in bars and restaurants sporting team shirts or hats to display their support. As a #motogpfancanada I was overwhelemd by seeing all the motorcycle racing related promotions from clothing to posters displayed across the city.
While using public transportation, people display their team and rider colors everywhere !
Fridays are practice days, and allows teams and riders to setup their bikes to optimize every detail in order to qualify on the saturday for race day on sunday. At Sepang , friday practice day is free of charge for everyone ! To say, that the southeastern asian market is important would be an understatement. Especially for Honda and Yamaha, these 2 major japanese motorcyle companies have their biggest markets in Thailand,VietNam,Malaysia,Indonesia. While touring these countries, one can understand by the huge amount of 2 wheel transportation that goes on here, food delivery, people moving and parts delivery of any kind gets done by motorcycle. MotoGP has added a round this year in Thailand, increasing the number of races to 19 for the season. They start in March and end in November. There are 4 races in Asia and will most likely stay on the calendar for years to come.
The location of the Sepang race track is about 50 kms south of KL city centre. KL transit posted a shuttle service to and from the racetrack for the 3 day event, The price of a 2 way ticket was 35 RM. I took the shuttle from KL Sentral main terminal station. It took about 1 hour to get the circuit on friday morning. As many of who know me , I really enjoy motorcycle racing and to be in a bus full of race fans sporting their colors is an experience I cherish thoroughly. I got to meet people for Australia, New Zealand , UK and Hungary as well as many Malaysians.
There are many departures from KL Sentral, but if you are eager to arrive at the track as early as possible as I did, I did not mind the standing room bus ride.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once you arrive at the track you see the huge lettering for Sepang on the side of a hill,
MotoGP weekend starts now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you walk towards the main gate you are exposed to all the sights and sounds of a motorcyle racing event. There are numerous stands selling merchandise of all kinds, as for me, a canadian fan it is difficult to obtain stuff like this back home. Today I am on a reconnaissance mission to explore the available merchandise being sold and which part of the stands I can get my best experience. Loud music fills the air at the gate area , bright colors and flags abound as you enter the site. In the background you start hearing the Moto3 bikes being started up for free practice 1 (FP1). If the sights and sounds bring back memories of my racing days back in Canada in the 80’s, the size of the racing venue here reminds me that this is not Shannoville Motorsports Park. https://www.facebook.com/groups/533885496621844/
SMP was great for me, however this here ,is the ultimate racing experience.
I could go on to write about all the racing action and the championships at stake , but if you are interested in reading more about that, there are plenty of stories to read across the net and social media. But what I want to share here is more the aspect of attending the event with all the other race fans at the site. There is a feeling of camaraderie at a MotoGP event unlike any other motorsport. While many fans here are motorcyclist themselves, not all are , but all are taken by the energy in the air. We met a young family from Gatineau Québec on our bus shuttle ride back to the train. It was their first MotoGP event ever and are not motorcyclists but they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It is difficult to not be overwhelmed by such an event when you are with 103,000 spectators !
One of the reasons we attended the MalaysianGP , besides the fact that we were already in Asia on our #ourworldtour , was to rejoin our friends from Switzerland. We met the 2 brothers, Marc and Thomas at our first MotoGP event back in 2012 in Aragon,Spain. Our paths crossed during the entire weekend in Aragon and beyond, and our friendship was created and meant to be. We kept in touch over the years , remet in twice in Europe and once in Montréal. It was a real pleasure to rejoin them in Kuala Lumpur, sharing our views on world ethics, having a few pints over some great food. The funny aspect of this relationship was that the first weekend we met,we all spoke english to each other. They are german speaking Swiss citizens and it took us many months after we met to realise that they both speak excellent french, actually understanding our Québécois french and learning some of our expressions very rapidly ! In true Swiss fashion, they are both multi lingual as Marc speaks not only german, french, english but italian as well ! I envy their ability to be able to converse in so many languages. Thank you both Marc and Thomas for the great time together, and Au revoir à la prochaine mes amis !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anytime more then 100,000 people get together in one location it is sure to have some consequences on logistics. Getting to and from the track was another experience of its own. On friday, I took the shuttle bus back to the KL City Centre (KLCC) and it turned out to be a 3 hour long ride in a massive trafic jam.
Again, looking at the bright side, I got to share a seat (rather narrow) with a young Indonesian grafic artist and we got to chat all the way back to KLCC. It is surprising and heartwarming how most people here are receptive when they learn that we are canadians. Canada has a great reputation in many places across the planet and we should ALL be very PROUD of this heritage. Sylvie and I are both extremely grateful for this, and all Canadians can rest assured that we will leave our mark to ensure that Canada keep its rating !
The shuttle bus to the track works well, in the morning, so saturday we took shuttle to the track. Sharing stories with some aussie friends along the way, we also took time to distribute some maple candy to many people on the bus that was greatly appreciated.
We actually saw some people later the next day that we had given candy to and they came to say hello and tell us how good they thought the candy was ! That is what we enjoy the most about our travels, beyond the sites, it is the people we meet and can share with. There are many more good people on this planet then bad, and most attend MotoGP events, OK I am a litte biased !
Saturday is race qualification day that determines grid position for the sunday race. KL is located a mere 3 degrees north of the equator, it is hot and HUMID. Late saturday afternoon it POURED for some 30-40 minutes delaying the last qualification session. While most people looked for shelter, the rain actually felt good in 35C heat ! After the day was over, our friends, Sylvie and I decide to take a TEKSI to the nearby KL airport and to take the KL Expres train into the city ! A little more expensive but much quicker !
For Sunday race day, the organisers of MotoGP decided to advance the schedule by 2 hours fearing that a late afternoon heavy rainstorm could delay the event. Motorcycles race in the rain but at times when conditions are simply to dangerous, delays are unavoidable. It was a good decision as all 3 races were run under dry conditions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leaving the track with 103,900 other people was somewhat chaotic, albeit organised ! We did repeat the train part from KLIA2 however there were no TEKSIs and only a shuttle bus to the airport. We did manage to get back to the city centre to have our last meal and a few drinks with our friends Marc and Thomas, and it was the end of a fantastic weekend to a great event. To be repeated somewhere, somehow in another part of the world in 2019 !

Learn About the Unibet Sign up Offer and How to Use it
Tumblr media
Online betting has gained much popularity in recent years. This is because mostly everyone has access to a computer, internet, and mobile phone, and bookmakers have become licensed and can provide their services online. Not to mention that people across the world have access to some platforms and they can enjoy betting whenever they want. Although there are so many betting sites available, not al are the same and it is crucial to evaluate all options and make sure you choose a reliable one. You can always find bonuses waiting, such as Unibet sign up offer and Bet365 free bet.
Why Unibet Sign up Offer
Unibet sign up offer is one of the best ones out there. The platform is widely known in Europe and you can easily find so many features, special offers not only for new members, but for existing ones as well. To put it simple, you can receive up to £40 risk free bet. However, before you claim any offer, you have to open an account. The steps are quite easy, and you need to provide some personal and financial information. After all, you want to place bets on the site, so it is understandable that you have to give them your credit/debit card data.
Every major bookmaker offers welcoming bonuses, because it is a great way to attract new members and to keep them engaged on the website. In general, there are certain terms and conditions that have to be respected, because not everyone qualifies for these bonuses. They seem very attractive, but it happens in some cases to try to access them and then figure out it is not that easy. In some cases, you have to make a minimum deposit, in others to place bets on certain events. Knowing everything about the bonus in advance is a great way to avoid any uncertainties and disappointments.
What Bet365 Free Bet Offers
Bet365 is known worldwide and if you ask a passionate bettor, he/she will tell you about their experience with the platform. It is no wonder it gained so much popularity, because it always strives to provide the best experience, adds new features, offers multi-lingual customer support, live streaming and live betting. On top of these, add the  Bet365 free bet  and you have a winner. Not to mention there are so many active promotions once you are a member, you can always find something to do on the platform.
The bonus consists of up to £100 bet credits and as it happens everywhere, there are certain conditions to keep count of. The minimum deposit is £5, there are minimum odds and payment methods exclusions that apply. Claiming the offer is very easy and it requires becoming a member, which means opening an account. You have to fill out the information required, such as date of birth, to prove that you are not a minor and you can bet safely and according to law. Afterwards, you have to deposit the minimum amount and place a qualifying bet. Once you succeed, you will find the bet credits in your account.
Every bookmaker has some restrictions when it comes to betting. Some are more complex than others, but at the end of the day it matters what you want and what you like about a platform. Also, it depends on your location, because not all bookmakers accept members from all around the world. For example, the  Unibet sign up offer  is available to residents in the UK. The website is licensed and there are no security issues, but this is how they operate. The minimum wager needs to be at least £1 on sports events. The bonus is not available for all markets, because virtual sports and race bets are not included.
Aside from the Unibet sign up offer, there is also a casino bonus, and this is ideal in case you are interested in online casino games. You can take advantage of this feature and not head to a casino nearby, simply enjoy the games on your computer or on the go. It is important to note that you have to use the Sportsbook bonus before you access the casino one. The casino bonus has a minimum deposit required of £10. The welcoming bonus is very appreciated by people because it is considerable, but also because it offers access to a casino bonus and the combination is a winning one for many players.
The Unibet sign up offer takes players to the world of online betting and it is quite beneficial. This is especially true because you can receive your money back if the first bet loses. However, there are certain requirements that have to be met in order to withdraw the winnings and the bonus stake resulted. Take the following example, if you receive £10 back, you need to place a bet of £30 on a market that has at least 2/5 odds. In case you don’t follow the requirement within 60 days, you will lose the bonus and the winnings resulted from it.

How to Tell Your Client the Invoicing Charges without Any Stress
Invoicing and accounting were never an easy subject. We’ve always struggled in school and at times even today. This is why only a handful of scholars get to become the best of CAs. and there is literally no bad at that. Each one of us is different and brilliant in our fields. There is nothing to be embarrassed about.Read on and know the important tips to reduce invoicing related stress.
Now you must be wondering the whole reason behind this session of TEDTalk. So, while scrolling Reddit a couple of days ago, I came across a post that haunted me for hours. It was about how an amazingly talented photographer was embarrassed about successfully doing his business because of the lack of some admin skills.
I wondered how this must be a problem of many who do not say it. This seemingly minor obstacle became a major problem for someone to be successful. I could not control but sharing this with everyone who is facing these problems.
But, first, please read the exact situation
“I’ve been working for a company led by a successful photographer in the UK for a few years until about a year ago when I left the country for personal reasons. I’ve remained close to the company and started doing freelance work for them as a photographer, doing behind the scenes photography, and work on other projects. It is however really hard for me to set my own prices as I haven’t done freelance work before and don’t really know how to break down my costs and adjusting my rates, as I’ve been offered 200£ one time and 2000£ another time for projects that took about the same amount of work. A lot of the jobs I’ve been getting are also very spontaneous, asking me to fly out on location within just a few days so there often isn’t much time for preparation.
So when it comes down to sending my invoices I end up procrastinating and building up anxiety about it to the point where I’ve just ended up doing work for free a couple of times already. I’ve asked other photographer friends what their process is but never really managed to get a proper response from them and I just get ashamed to tell them how helpless I am. I really love my work but I’m embarrassed by my lack of professionalism when it comes to the admin side of it and it’s making me doubt if I should even pursue this career or just find regular employment again. I’m taking this to Reddit hoping that I could maybe get some pointers in the right direction.”
This particular issue has sparked so many questions that need critical understanding and precise targeting. As an invoicing expert, I would like to resolve each of the queries of my friend u/gabbacus (Reddit Username).
How to break down project costing to justify every cost?
What factors to take into consideration while deciding cost?
How much is worth your services?
Why are projects estimated differently at different times?
How to create an Invoice that is self-explanatory?
How important are estimates and charges list?
Why is it important to seek expert guidance?
Lastly, Invoicing is a minor issue to create any embarrassment.
Keep on reading to find out solutions to avoid complications while invoicing and successfully carry out administration jobs without any fail.
Question 1- How to break down a project costing to justify every cost?
In any project that you carry out, there are multiple costs involved that your customers might not be aware of and consider you’re overcharging. To take your customer in full trust, break down the cost for them to help them understand better. For example, a photographer’s full charges can include-
Time billing
Photography cost
Travel charges
Rental charges
Markup charges
Taxes
Additional services
Consultation fees (if any)
The above is the precise breakdown of costs a photographer should include in their invoices. Apart from this, there are multiple other types of invoices that you can create such as
Lump-sum billing– for collectively charging prices for the project. It is basically for bigger projects including many folds of project management.
Up-set billing– a combination of time-cost and lump-sum billing, up-set billing is about charging a lump-sum to work in a particular time frame.
Question 2- What factors to take into consideration while deciding cost?
It might not seem important at first, but how you invoice photography clients can have a big impact on the success of a job, and your profit margin.
A key factor/tip that will be directly relatable to your business is bill your clients three or four times more the payment amount you want to take home. There is nothing unethical about it. Because this cost will include all your other costs associated. For say, if you want to take $25 at the end of the day home, bill your clients $100 to $105. This amount will help you cover up all the costs that you have invested and later take back home the desired income you want to. Some photographers contrast to the hourly billing and suggest it is not the best way, but it is important as a photographer to value your time and bill on the basis of hours invested.
On the other hand, the other most chosen method of billing clients is billing for products. Ie. prints, books, photos, etc. it is generally a totally different billing segment and not mixed with time-based billing.
In a photography business, an invoice is generally split into two parts- the cost to do the work (taking pictures) and the cost to use the pictures(picture licensing).
Therefore, when you bill next time, make sure you are taking into consideration both of the most important factors and reduce invoicing related stress.
Question 3- How much to worth your services?
A photography business is one of the most diverse business segments in the society out there. Where getting appreciated and acknowledged is a long road to achieving achieve. Therefore, if you will not value your pieces of art, no one out there will ever too.
Now, once you firmly appreciate your work. You can let your clients perceive higher values of your services fairly quickly. Most importantly, a business presentation is everything. More so in the business of art. Do not forget to consider these factors while upgrading your business.
Decorate your space to make it more professional and welcoming.
Your packaging is your branding. Ensure every packaging material you use is fully branded and professional with logo and information.
Let your customers experience a VIP customer service experience.
Photography is a luxury. Just like people invest in expensive bags and cars, they like to invest in photography. Be the one their best money can only buy.
Always stay ahead of your competition. Regularly track them and create newer strategies to stay ahead and relevant all the time.
Question 4- Why are projects estimated differently at different times?
Now, this is a complete situation based circumstance. Many times as businessmen we tend to make decisions that are of best of interests at a given point of time. Make sure to consider a few factors while estimating projects-
The kind of project you’re working on
Your current business needs
Past experience of the projects
Project involvement needs
Need for supplies
Calculate hours to be invested.
Question 5- How to create an Invoice that is self-explanatory?
Well, an invoice is your most professional document, apart from being your reward to cash for services. It is your most eligible branding and a communicating piece of business art. An online invoice should be your most calculated, explanatory, and itemized list to help clients understand prices well.
Here are all the details an invoice must have-
Client’s name
Client’s address
Business name
Address of the Business
Business contact details
Itemized list of services, products
Taxes and description
Payment details
Terms and conditions
Payment due dates
Lastly, thank you notes
Question 6- How important are estimates and charges list?
Estimates are your gateway to new projects. They tell your clients how much they will be paying for services that will be offered to them. An estimate is a sum of items, and tentative expenses. It also includes tentative extra charges that might incur during the course of the project. The estimated cost of a work is a close approximation of its actual cost.
Question 7- Why is it important to seek expert guidance?
While you’re a photography expert, you still need expert guidance on administration tasks that you’re still a noob to. Because your entire cash flow depends on your invoicing. It is the guardian to help your business sustain and grow. An expert just does not need to be a person. It can also be an invoicing software like Invoicera that guides you at each step while creating an invoice or managing business payables and receivables. How Much Should A Website Cost You?
The question foremost on people’s minds is; “how much is a website going to cost?” It is a logical question, as you want value for your money. We err on the side of caution as we can’t visualise and evaluate whether every cent we spend on something as impalpable as a website, is worth it.
It remains a challenge to pin down set costs for a professional website. You will most likely receive varying costs for designing your site when you ask for an estimate of cost from different web development agencies. Especially when starting with the search term Web Design Auckland. Making the decision on what you are prepared to pay even trickier.
So, how do you decide how much money you are prepared to pay? Here are some guidelines to help your business get a head start.
What should you pay for real value?
Answer: To determine what is of value to your business and to have in mind the outcomes expected of a particular project and its worth to your business.
Let’s explore what it all means; it might be as simple as keeping in touch with and updating your website CMS which includes Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal, etc.
Why does it matter that you keep your CMS version up to date at all times? How is it beneficial to your business? You need to consider what the cost is to your business if you neglect to update to the latest version.
To begin with, you put your security at risk.  The main reason is to ensure that you have the most recent version as each update fixes the security flaws found in previous versions. You are vulnerable to being hacked if you are stuck with an older version. Not only will there be an extra cost to your business, but sensitive information such profiles and emails of clients could appear in the public domain, ruining the reputation of your business.
In the second place, an outdated site won’t be up to speed with new technology and advances in technology and will leave you lagging behind, giving your competitors an upper hand.
Lastly, if you are guilty of not bothering to update your website CMS, you won’t have the advantage of new and improved features so that your site maintains a good image. Not only will guests to your website appreciate the effort you put in to keep abreast with changes, but it also hinders damage to your brand.
It boils down the fact, that when you ascertain value; the great likelihood of the initial cost of getting your website designed is much less than the probable cost and instability you are making your business vulnerable to.
On the flip side, what is the value of a more highly successful marketing campaign or marketing strategy to your business?
An excellently, planned, intentioned and designed campaign can assist you in meeting your goals, in establishing a profile, rallying new prospective clients and displaying your brand. You can boost your sales immediately if you sell products online.
How can the owner of a business tell if they are receiving high value for their investment in the digital space?
Answer: The most likely response is; whether it was effective?
It might seem elementary, as too many times a customer is at a loss and wants to know how they can determine it.
As mentioned before,  establishing if your investment in web development or digital marketing is of value, depends on what you want your outcomes to be.
For example;  Would you like more sales leads? If that is the case, what numbers are you getting from your existing website and how many do you aim to get? Do you primarily want organic traffic?  What are the advantages of increasing organic visitors? What length of time do you want visitors to remain on your site? Do you require them to return regularly or do you need them to visit once?
Upon the initial meeting with your agency, having a clear understanding as to what quantifiable outcomes are vital to you and your business.
Making sure that everyone is on the same page,  implies that everyone who is part of the team, namely; web designers, strategists, digital marketers to the developers have a clear concept of the expected outcome of the project. It ensures that they develop an effective plan to get maximum from your investment.
Ensure that the project is set up correctly from the start, as it makes it easier to establish whether you are getting bang for your buck, as everything is tracked and benchmarked.
It is important to note that the likelihood of it being a sound investment if you put in the effort and created a business model and other requirements before your meeting with your agency.  It eradicates unnecessary time and money spent when you leave your agency to formulate a business plan.
How do your expectations tie in with your budget?
Answer:  This is the challenging part. Here is a preliminary guide. However, bear in mind that a reputable agency will give you an estimate of what they can realistically do, taking into account, your budget, at the start of the process.
Be cognizant of the fact that some agencies will quote an unrealistically low figure to get your commitment to choose them. Which inevitably results in them sending varying changes as the project progresses, which will cost you an arm and a leg, counting on the fact that you won’t abandon the project midway through.
For widely used projects worth $20K or more,  allocate money in your budget to invest in having a scope done by your web development company.
The investment not only saves time but money in the long term.  You are better able to make vital decisions in the initial stages before you are too far in the process of the build.
The results of the scope, depending on the spectrum of the project,  could be an outline of the steps of implementing technical specifications. Or it could be a document with fewer details that is, in effect, a Statement of Work, which describes the choice of software used, it’s functionality for various parts of the site and so forth.
It takes time and effort to conduct some research in finding the best solution and to give the exact price. If you want something that stands out in your sector, be willing to pay upfront, so that you save cost later in the process.
Estimate NZD $1,000 – $3,000
This budget is suitable for a basic website. It will most likely act as an online brochure. A basic website might be developed in WordPress or Squarespace using a template or theme.
It is vital to note that when you have a small budget, your website developer will expect you to be cooperative and positive, and to be well prepared with your content. You need to be able to make on the spot decisions and to adhere to it, have clarity about outcomes and to be realistic about timeframes.
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for people with small budgets to take up additional time due to lack of organisation. It might not be accounted for when the quote was given. Therefore, the web company becomes less engaged and co-operative as would be expected.
Estimate NZD $3,000 – $7,000
Most of the small business sites fall into this category, providing the site does not have plenty of sophisticated functionality. The site might incorporate a contact form, social media feeds, a blog and pages about your services, business and staff.
The top end of this category might include e-commerce functionality, using something like Shopify or WordPress WooCommerce.
From a design viewpoint, these sites are more likely to start from a theme base or template site, however with some added customisation than in lower category.
Estimate NZD $7,000 – $12,000
With this type of budget, you can build a custom site. It won’t have a broad range of features and functionality. Contrary to what you may think, opting for a template site which costs a bit less will be more value for money than a custom designed site in this category.
You have to ask yourself whether you would like your site to stand apart from others, designed to enhance your brand.  Or, would you rather have a few more features and opt to have a template that is not distinct from other variations in the market.
Estimate NZD $12,000 – $20,000
In this price range, there is leeway to incorporate much more functionality, which compromises of complex forms for various types of organisations, namely; member subscriptions with renewal reminders as well as a database attached.
In addition to the features mentioned, it will probably include a news or blog section, as well as, searchable content, custom designs for mobile and the web, and social media integration. Some serious SEO work would be undertaken, optimising your pages as the site is being built, a term such as web design Auckland could be worked in.
Estimate NZD $20,000 – $30,000
At this estimated expenditure specific functionality needs to be entirely customised or built to your needs and frequently to merge with your existing systems.
Design, in great likelihood, is tailored for the web and mobile, as well as other functionality attached, like e-mail marketing integration and events calendar.
Estimate NZD $30,000 +
Over and above, this range also includes,  an entire tailored design and build, with multi-lingual and international content, occasionally numerous sites on one installation, e-commerce website functionality, other systems integration and complex forms.
The sight might incorporate other possible functionality which includes login areas for members, member editable areas and profiles, distributors with a database of resources, message boards and forums; integrated news feeds from other sources through RSS integrations with retail POS systems, marketing automation and so forth.
Guideline: Unique equates to more dollars
Based on experience, the more distinctive and intricate you would like the site to be the more money you need to fork out. Hence, it takes longer to build.
With technological advancements, the web templates accessible develop into bigger, appealing and more professional looking sites at a more reasonable investment compared to two or three years ago.
Depending on what you are looking for, whether it be a professional looking web presence that permits you to add content without much effort and manage the site, it is doable for less than $10,000 and possibly less than $5000.
It is important to note that if you choose to go with the lowest offer, and the company is based abroad, it will require more of your time to wade through everything and think of appropriate questions and answers than you would with a local company, whereby the initial cost is more.

For Minority Brokers, Integrity Prevails over Stereotypes
David Caraboolad knows too well what it’s like to face all types of discrimination. From the rabid fear of Middle Easterners following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to the everyday awkwardness of people botching the pronunciation of his last name, the Lebanese-American has overcome a lot to become the successful real estate broker-owner that he is today.
Like many minority real estate brokers, Caraboolad constantly faces the professional challenge of having to sell himself while selling properties. And like more and more people in the industry, he’s doing it very well. He and his partner Vadim Barash – an immigrant from Ukraine – now co-own NextHome Experience, one of the most successful brokerages in Columbus, Ohio, on pace to move 1,200 homes in 2019 with 84 agents.
For minorities, the road to success can be rough and boobytrapped with hate, but there can also be support and sources of strength along the way.
“I was certainly singled out as a foreign kid,” Caraboolad says. “I was born in Cleveland. My parents spoke Arabic in the home, and my grandmother, Victoria, has been my inspiration. She taught me what it was to be an entrepreneur.”
Though his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1895, there is still a tradition of hard work that rings true for most of the more recent immigrant families. In real estate, though, Caraboolad says there is an extra need for minority brokers to operate with integrity because it is ultimately a relationship business based on trust and results.
Caraboolad particularly remembers the days after the Sept. 11 terror attacks being challenging for business development. Like any salesperson, brokers are always battling perceptions, and race is one of those issues. “Having the names we have—or an accent or anything—makes our lives more challenging because we have to overcome that piece,” he explains.
Once a potential client or agent get to know Caraboolad and Barash, they say it becomes much easier and their transactional relationships often blossom into something deeper.
“We want dedicated producers and we want to build an atmosphere on family. If anyone gets to know us, they are an advocate for us,” Caraboolad said. “The most important thing to do is deliver on promises. Breaking promises breaks trust. If their trust is broken, there is no relationship.”
Of course, not every minority broker shares the same challenge as the NextHome Team in Columbus. Down in Miami, Fla., where the bulk of the city is Hispanic, Irving Padron owns an Engel & Volkers brokerage and often competes against brokers of the same Cuban heritage. In that situation, Padron says the key is to stand out from the other Cuban brokers.
“I don’t wake up every morning and think: How am I going to overcome being a minority?” Padron says. “When you go out of town, that’s where you feel it.”
As a high-end broker focused on Miami’s most luxurious listings, Padron spends a lot of time courting investors and business partners across the U.S. as well as Canada and Europe. In these settings, he suddenly becomes an exotic commodity, and he says his background typically works as a strength because people expect him to have a unique perspective. It’s a lesson he teaches his agents—be an expert on your community but also build a broader world view.
“I encourage my agents to travel. Your view can be so myopic if you just stay,” Padron says. “Traveling is tremendously empowering because there are few people around the table who have my points of view. You are seen as a multicultural expert.”
His main advice for young minority agents and brokers is to find a good mentor. Many of the industry’s roadblocks, especially ones around race and ethnicity, can be navigated with the help of a good mentor, Padron says, adding that the best mentors and business partners sometimes can be found outside of the Hispanic community.
People come into real estate for all sorts of reasons, and each broker has his and her own personal challenges to conquer in order to be successful. There are also many commonalities that run across all races, ethnicities and genders, according to the National Association of REALTORS®’ groundbreaking study, 2017 Choosing a Career in Real Estate: A Perspective on Gender, Race and Ethnicity. For instance, self-motivation as well as people and negotiating skills were the most cited skillsets to be deemed important for a successful career in real estate.
The differences seemed to come up more with each professionals’ personal reason for entering the real estate industry. According to the report, “White and Caucasian members frequently reported that they liked real estate as it is an active job (as opposed to a desk job). Hispanic and Latino members frequently reported they liked working with people. Black and African American members frequently reported they had an interest in real estate and liked the salary possibilities. Asian and Pacific Islander as well as American Indian, Eskimo, or Aleut members frequently reported they liked flexible hours.”
A key difference in the minority experience has to do with the bottom line. While Asian-Americans seem to be making the most money, the study found a major gap between their income levels and those of their black peers.
“Asian and Pacific Islander residential-only specialists had the highest median gross annual income of all ethnic groups at $56,800 in 2016, followed by White and Caucasian at $54,200, and Hispanic and Latino members at $41,700, and Black and African American residential-only specialists at $23,000,” according to the study.
The report also found that most black REALTORS® are actually practicing real estate as a second job and rely on other sources of income. This suggests a major disparity in how each racial class views their respective real estate careers.
Fred Underwood, director of diversity for National Association of REALTORS®, says the real estate industry as a whole has historically lagged behind the national demographics with fewer minorities working in the industry compared to their respective percentages of the national population. However, he notes that great strides have been made in the past few decades, and the rate of diversity has outpaced the overall population.
It hasn’t entirely caught up from coast to coast, but certain markets, such as Chicago, have seen incredible progress that should give the rest of the country hope, Underwood says. For instance, the Chicago chapter of the National Association of REALTORS® had been all white into the 1980s, but leaders began making changes that have led to long-term, sustainable diversity within and atop the organization.
“Being inclusive takes time. Over the past 30 years, there has been a sea-change in that organization,” Underwood says. “The board is very diverse.”
Underwood added that as a national group NAR has a lot of work to do to prioritize inclusion and provide outreach to minority brokers. He said its leadership and the membership, alike, are heading in the right direction but that it will take time—and, more importantly, a concerted effort—to provide minority brokers throughout America an industry association that they deserve.
From an executional standpoint, a majority of the work is done at the local chapters; however, too often the national and local organizations undertake weak programs in the name of diversity but don’t do much more than merely pay lip service to the cause.
“There has to be intent,” Underwood says. “It has to be purposeful.”
Underwood noted that the large national real estate companies, including Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and Realogy, have made inclusion a major corporate priority, largely because it makes good business sense to invest in reaching out to minority groups—whether it’s for partnering with broker/owners, hiring agents or finding buyers and sellers.
For Luis Vega, broker/owner of Realty ONE Group Diamond in Long Beach, Calif., one area that can be improved at the national level is education—specifically, communicating with consumers through media and advertising about the value of REALTORS®, the importance they have in making sound transactions that build wealth, and the inclusion of minorities in that overall message.
Vega’s story starts like many Latino immigrants. He came to the U.S. from Mexico as a 5-year-old and quickly fell in love with America largely because of its diversity.
“I grew up listening to country music, heavy metal, grunge and hip hop at the same time Latin music was played at home by my parents so I had an understanding and appreciation for all music. I use music as an example because it connected me to different types of people, cultures, ethnicities,” Vega says. “I not only knew my culture but could communicate and connect with others nationally and internationally.”
Being multi-lingual is a huge advantage in business, especially in a diverse market such as Southern California, Vega says. Yet even in Long Beach, there is tension, prejudice and a risk that comes with being an ethnic minority. Vega says the key to thriving among such conditions is to not let others define you.
“As a minority owner the most important issue is to not be labeled a minority but a capable business owner who can provide a diverse workplace for talented employees and real estate agents—in which everyone is looked at for their talents, skills, abilities, personalities … not for their nationality, religion, gender, or gender preference,” Vega says. “I’ve never seen myself as a minority.  I played sports, went to school, focusing on the success my abilities brought to me, not what was given to me. So, as a minority to others, if you see your ethnicity being a weakness, you need to change that perspective and see it as your strength. People may disagree with me, and I’ve been discriminated against, but I think we all have of any color or race. It just can’t be an excuse to not succeed.”

Don’t you just wish that you could support and trust yourself in everything you do? What if you were the biggest support for yourself? What if you encouraged every good idea you had and made it happen? That’s the biggest aim and the ultimate goal in my life right now. I know many of my friends are their own best friends and love themselves unconditionally however I’m not there yet and know many others who aren’t. It doesn’t mean we cannot get there, it just means we need to work harder.
Most of my childhood and teenage years I was shy – some people even called me timid. When I first heard the word, I didn’t know how to translate it into Finnish however I knew it didn’t mean anything good. At least not for the job I was applying for at the time. I was always the one at the background, the one following everyone else, the one not sure what they want but willing to support friends in their dreams. It gets tiring at times but then you kind of settle into your role. The role that you created for yourself. No one ever forced me into staying at the background, no one told me not to stand out, no one blocked me in anyway. I’ve come to realise it was me all along – I was my own worst enemy! That’s awful when you think of it. You could even somehow justify it to yourself IF there was someone who stamped on you and made you feel down. That’s never the case. Give me a scenario, I bet I can turn it around for you to realise there was no one who could have set the ultimate barrier for you chasing and achieving your dreams. You were the one setting that particular barrier for yourself.
Tumblr media
I left Finland thirteen and a half years ago. I have moved from a country to another between 5 locations since then and although my main working language has always been English, I have also had to cope with German, Spanish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Dutch at work. It might sound like I’m bragging about my language skills whereas I keep comparing myself to other Nordic speakers or multi-lingual candidates. There are plenty of people who fluently speak several languages and compared to them I feel like I’m nothing. I feel happy for them yet “not good enough” about myself. It does make me feel good to hear my English friends telling me “You’re a genius, you’re so good at languages!” or “Did you know she speaks and understands like 6 languages…?” when they introduce me to their friends – only for the moment. Then I crawl back home and think to myself “Only if they knew there are so many more talented people out there!” That’s toxic, that attitude right there is what we should all step away from – far away. Why an earth would you push yourself down? Not everyone can be the best in what they’re good at nor should they be. We should only try to be as good as we can be, but not aim to be better than everyone else. Only that way we can appreciate ourselves and get the satisfaction needed for our minds to continue being creative.
I have never felt different from the locals when living abroad. In fact, nowadays I consider being in Finland more like “being abroad” rather than being in England. When I moved to England for the first time, it only took three weeks for me to start dreaming in English. Since then I can count dreams in Finnish language by one hand. I also naturally started thinking in English. Anything I write, I write in English whether it’s a shopping list or a diary. My family and friends would never expect to receive a birthday card or a postcard from around the world written in Finnish. They all know I’ve only written in English since 2004. It’s not something I think of, it’s just easier and natural for me. Accent however is something that cannot be faked – more often not. I know some people who aren’t English yet only few could tell the difference. I wish I had an English accent and some people think I do but I’m so full of self-criticism I could never give myself the opportunity to enjoy that thought. Most often it doesn’t bother me because I do know the vocabulary and I can keep up with any conversation but there are situations when I get insecure speaking with a group of people who have a posh English accent and I think to myself “How could I compete with that?” I cannot and I don’t have to compete with that because what makes me me is the fact that I’m multi-lingual. Most often the people with a posh English accent aren’t. I certainly don’t want to come across overconfident but at times thinking “Well, I can speak many languages whereas they cannot.” helps me to keep up with my self-confidence. Or if someone looks at me like “Well, you have an accent that I don’t recognise” or “You’re not from here” or “You’re not English” by thinking “I can say this in 6 different languages, I could easily ask them if they could do the same.” I know they couldn’t and it makes me more confident. I can then carry on focusing on the subject and forget about my own insecurities. There is no right and wrong in this subject. All I’m trying to say is that one shouldn’t underestimate themselves. If one wants to learn more languages, they can easily do so. If one cannot pick up a native accent, they surely have other competencies beneficial to them.
I might come across quite loud and confident to people who meet me for the first time – even to some who know me already. Mostly people who are close to me know me as someone who loves to have fun and appreciates a good laugh but also is sensitive and considers others. However the truth is I’m quite insecure and careful with how I represent myself to others. I’m very self-critical and often end up not doing all the things I want or wish to due to lack of self-confidence. Actually I have come to realise I care far too much of what others think of me. That thought even limited me from writing a blog years ago when my father first suggested me to do so. I used to write loooong emails to my family and friends of what it is like to live abroad. My father then said I should write to the Finnish magazines yet I wasn’t ready. Deep down I thought it would be a dream coming true but I was too scared. Later on I started thinking what I was scared of… I couldn’t think of a concrete situation that would have scared me. It was my own insecurity telling me not to. I simply didn’t believe in myself and my skills. When I finally started writing a blog in 2015, it felt good. I felt like “Why haven’t I done this for the past 10 years?” I started writing a blog about travelling as I found it an easy topic. The more I write, the more I want to write. Since then I have written multiple articles regarding motivation, feelings, life in general and the latest inspiration I’ve been working on is scriptwriting. I yet have lots of material to be published.
Dealing with lack of believing in yourself is devastating. I wish that for no one. I truly wish that everyone takes the time to find themselves and to fall in love with themselves. That’s my ultimate goal in life. Talking to friends, attending therapy or support groups can help you get there. I have my secret ways and started working on becoming the person I wish to be. I’m only in the beginning of the journey but I already feel relieved, content and more positive. The future is bright, the future is what YOU want it to be. Of course there will be times that test us, times that push us to our limits, but we can always choose our attitude towards the situation. Let’s remember to let go of the things we cannot control and to change the things we can!
Best regards,
Vera Jo

PS.
Whatever you do, do it to the best of your abilities. If you write, write as if you’re the best author. If you act, act like you’re the most famous actor. If you sing, sing like you’re the best singer out there. If you’re a translator, translate like there’s no one who can replace you. You might not be the best but you will certainly make yourself feel worth it and that’s what gets you forward! That’s what makes you want to do better and to succeed further. Remember that everything you do has a chain reaction. Everything you do is meaningful.
Insecurities – Turn them into Strengths! Don't you just wish that you could support and trust yourself in everything you do? What if you were the biggest support for yourself?
