Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Box Set - 1993

Whilst I toil away at mapmaking, I did reward myself with a bit of treasure! In my deep plunges into the interwebs, I did in fact stumble across a wonderful artifact indeed. (But do forgive me for the photo quality, I was too excited for touch-ups!)

From thirty years ago, the “New Edition” of the Forgotten Realms Campaign setting! What a find! Though the box itself has a few dings and dents (a sign of much love, I’m sure), the treasures inside this chest were in far better condition.

Near mint, if I do say so myself! We see here our good friend Elminster here in some of my favorite art of him, but a Drizzt Do’Urden can also be spotted on the Grand Tour of the Realms, among other familiar faces.

I have not yet read through all of these, but soon I will be able to dispense what knowledge I find!

In addition to these fine books, the set came with a number of loose papers and maps, of which I had never seen before in digital or physical form.

Four in total! Two of eastern Faerun, and two of western. Once I am able to do so safely, I will be creating high resolution scans of these maps to share on this very blog, so do keep your eyes out!

But even more ingenious, included in the box was not one, but two of these! The transparent overlay seen here is made to show scale, and to be moved across the maps. As they all are drawn to the same scale, the overlays can be used between any of them, and having two copies of the overlay means more than one can be placed at a time, or, in case one is lost, there is a backup. These will provide themselves invaluable in reconstructing maps of the realms.

It also makes me wonder why we do not see these more often in more modern reproductions of these maps. I have not seen such overlays in any other piece of media for the Realms or any other setting, but they seem so useful, as well as inexpensive to produce! Perhaps this can be traced to the phasing out of overhead projectors and other such common technology of the 80s and 90s that saw the use of transparencies such as these. Wet erase markers faded out of use, and purchasing transparency films has become more difficult over time. Still, I hope that tools such as this can make a return. If nothing else, it sure beats getting out strings to try to measure the distances!

Following the maps, we find these sheets of symbols. My first thought was, are these sticker sheets? But thankfully, no! No aged glues or sticky pages greeted me (for surely stickers would not age well over three decades). These are actually cards, meant to be cut out and referenced. I am infinitely grateful that the previous owners of this box did not do so, since being in one piece has kept these from being lost or damaged, in the way small pieces often are.

The first three pages include runes and symbols. Some are for factions, such as the recognizable harp of the Harpers on the first page. Some are magical, namely the runes in green, and others are simply to convey a message.

The last two pages are the symbols of various gods and powers in the Realms, though some of the page is still dedicated to runes. Again, I will be creating scans, both front and back, to share.

And yes, the backs of all of them contain some information about the image on the front. I cannot wait to make copies so that I feel confident in cutting out and using the cards, while still keeping the originals in good condition.

The final portion of this treasure chest of information is a bestiary. The pages are unbound, but punched to fit into a ringed binder. I adore all the art. Like before, I will create scans, and perhaps write on more specific aspects of the creatures therein.

Some tips I've found which actually help me, as somebody with periodic elbow, shoulder, and finger pain when crocheting:

Choosing smaller projects, or projects that recommend hooks that are 5.00mm, as larger hooks trigger pain

Wearing compression gloves when my hands get too cold to function (stylish! Mine have copper infused in them, but I don't think it's necessary at all)

Figuring out which material in yarn helps with pain and how tiring your craft is

Unfortunately, take breaks

Try being realistic about what you are willing to sacrifice and risk in terms of pain. There will be times where you cannot do something without risk, and being able to weigh out your willingness for risk can be crucial.

(From what I have heard) use pillows to prop up yourself if you're sitting for a project may help reduce some pain

Your enjoyment > anything else

Hand and wrist stretches that are accessible to you

If anybody has things that help them, share it! I limited it to my perspective as somebody who has aches and pains in the arm I crochet with, but this is not limited to either pain nor crochet. Accessibility in crafts is imperative, and we can all help in making resources for people to learn from <3

Moving Day ~

Today is what I've come to refer to as Moving Day. My time is up where I've been staying, so I had to pack up my car with all my valuables, clothes, food, and health supplies, then spend several hours in my car, until I can check in somewhere else and unpack everything. It's physically exhausting, and by the time I'm done (around 4pm) I'm gonna end up sleeping on & off until getting up for work on Monday. I really dread Moving Day, but it's my reality for now--and I'm very aware there are many people who don't even have shelter at all.

Normally, Moving Day falls on a Sunday, like today...but it's gonna fall on Wednesday (a workday) again this week, as I only have funds to stay until then (paying my motor vehicle tax has left me broke). After that, I'll be spending the night at work or in my car. So I'm posting this now in the hope of enough help to get me a few more nights before I have to do it all again. I'm left to rely on the kindness of both friends and strangers. Thank you in advance to anyone able to give a little bit of help and for signal boosting this plea!

Farm Lexa has this hand bound book she made back when she was around sixteen. She made it to keep her pressed flowers. The very first page has pressed daisies and a date below them followed by a happy scribble, "Clarke asked me on a date."

The dandelion Clarke put in her hair after their first kiss. A black eyed susan they picked after their first time as they walked around the run down farm.

The petals of the deep red roses Clarke gifted Lexa the day they decided to get engaged.

One of each of the flowers Lexa walked down the aisle with. One of each of the flowers from Clarke's bouquet.

The english primrose that popped up in Lexa's garden not long after little Madi laughed for the first time.

The Lilly of the Valley a baby Saige found fascinating because fairies lived in them.

The poppies the twins ended up ripping from her garden because it matched their hair.

The small piece of baby's breath that showed up around the tree where they buried their baby soon after Lexa stepped out of her grief.

The sunflower petals that remind her of Clarke and their little sunshine boy Aden.

Every wild flower the kids offered her. At least one petal from the bouquets Clarke got her. Her favorite flowers from her garden. The ones she found on walks. All dated, all with a note on why they made her smile.

I don’t know if it’s a headcanon for the sake of angst, or if people genuinely believe this: but where did we get the idea that Morro starved Lloyd to make him easier to possess?

At least, when I look at this dialogue.

“This armor, it weakens me. At the same time, Lloyd is fighting my possession.” - Stiix and Stones.

“Lloyd's spirit continues to fight my possession. He's getting stronger.” Peak-a-Boo.

“Save your strength, because I'll be needing it.” - The Crooked Path.

This whole Possession has been a double-edged sword. Now especially that last line? That’s the main reason I highly doubt Morro was starving Lloyd. Whatever Lloyd feels, so does he. If Lloyd is hungry, hurt and weak, that’s not going to be helping anyone. Not saying this makes Morro a nice guy, just that for all that he’s got a list of wrongs; starving someone likely isn’t one of them.

It’s not Morro abusing Lloyd 24/7 as some think #He’s got more important stuff to do than waste time punching/stabbing/starving #the body he’s possessing before climbing a literal 55 thousand feet ice mountain a minute later #(So yes of course I have trouble buying the “he made Lloyd bleed out to make him weak”) I see in fic too how’d you guess #I know why ppl write it that way...I just struggle to buy the logic #Morrology

I just fought for an hour to LEGALLY buy and download some MP3 files from an artist I like, and wow they did not make it easy, and I would classify myself as pretty computer literate and tech savvy.

It honestly would have been easier to pirate it at that point.

If you buy a CD you can burn the MP3 easy as pie with a USB CD player and it's 100% legal, but wow, the digital landscape is something else completely.
