On Mate Behavior: Elriel
So, when it comes to Azriel's mate behavior, I would say the most commonly discussed point (which I definitely agree with) to *disprove* that Azriel displays any mate behavior towards Gwyn is his overall calm demeanor and focus on Eris when the Valkyrie are kidnapped in the middle of the night and dropped into the Blood Rite.
However, there is another example that additionally highlights the lack of "mate behavior" in the bonus chapter, and I truly don't see it come up that often, though I think it is even more telling!
Tumblr media
When he meets Gwyn's gaze, and that bloody memory of when he first "met" her (if you would like to call that their meeting) flashes, he is otherwise completely unruffled. He simply reflects on Gwyn's growth, and two seconds later, is snorting and having an easy, playful conversation.
While this certainly points to their comfortability and fun banter that they share, it does not scream *mate behavior.*
ToG and CC spoilers ahead
I think about Rowan seeing Aelin's ruined back for the first time, and being so overcome with anger at discovering the violence that had been enacted on her that he took to the skies to get control of his violent instincts:
Tumblr media
I think of Cassian in his bonus chapter with Nesta- going into a rage as he smelled Nesta's fear while she recalled Tomas's attempted assault. He would have gone to kill him right then, I have no doubt:
Tumblr media
I think of Ruhn hating Lidia, being sick over discovering the female he had fallen for was The Hind. And yet, when Pollux lays a hand on her, he was ready to rip out his throat for hurting Lidia. He couldn't understand how he could hate her and need her and want to kill for her at the same time:
Tumblr media
So I do think it's interesting that in comparison to the to the other mated males who get a POV and an inside look into their heads while they reflect on trauma their mates have been through (even before knowing they are mates, which is the case in all three of these examples) they are completely unhinged. And yet we get this pointed moment where Azriel actively reflects on Gwyn's trauma, the absolute horrors that had been done to her and... nothing. A snort, and a little bit of form correction and teasing.
Meanwhile in this same book, Elain gets called boring and Azriel's shadows are like hoe who do we need to mf-ing end right tf now:
Tumblr media
Azriel has already established that he believes the Cauldron could be wrong. While I personally disagree that there is foreshadowing to Azriel and Gwyn being mates, even in trying to give it a fair and unbiased look and say okay- could they be mates? I still wind up drawing the conclusion that even if they are, it would mean as little to Azriel as Elain's mating bond currently means to her.
I am personally super open minded about whether or not Azriel and Elain are true mates. I think a reveal that they are could be lovely. I also think them choosing each other above all, even fate, would be lovely.
But there is simply no denying that these two already have a set up plotline of questioning the Cauldron, and the only two characters *acting* like mates in this scenario are Az and Elain.
As always, I am Lucien and Gwyn positive even though I ship Elriel, so be kind in the comments! But I just really don't see how this could possibly play out any other way. Azriel has had too many on page opportunities, even from his personal POV, to display mate behavior towards Gwyn and there is nary a lick. It's just... not how a lead up to a mate reveal typically goes. So the pure, undiluted facts are that even if you think Sarah is a "fated mate" author above all, she is not treating these characters as she usually does. And that is noteworthy.
Thank you for joining me on this dissertation!

Azriel after his bonus chapter:
“Three days passed with no word from Cassian. He’d been replaced in training with a stone-faced Azriel, who was more aloof than usual and wouldn’t even give her a smile?”
Azriel is still very much upset about the whole thing with Rhys forbidding him from being with Elain (obviously). His feelings for Elain and her feelings for him are still very much there (obviously).

Do you guys remember acofas special edition where Elain is holding a tulips bouquet?
Tumblr media
Or remember when her sister feyre painted tulips on Elain's drawer:
I slung off my outer clothes onto the sagging dresser—frowning at the violets and roses I’d painted around the knobs of Elain’s drawer.
Or Remember when Elain was compared to a tulip bloom :
But Elain wrapped her own blue cloak around herself, averting her eyes from all of those towering, muscled warriors, the army camp bustling toward the horizon … She was a rose bloom in a mud field. Filled with galloping horses.
Do you remember when she missed flowers, and her father, with whom she was close, out of all the species, carved her a wooden tulip? Yeah, I remember:
She plucked another figurine from the mantel: a rose carved from a dark sort of wood. She held it in her palm, its solid weight surprising, and traced a finger over one of the petals. “He made this one for Elain. Since it was winter and she missed the flowers.”
But wait, can you imagine what Azriel gifted her?
It was a small, flat rose fashioned of stained glass, designed so that when held to the light, the true depth of the colors would become visible. A thing of secret, lovely beauty.
A tulip necklace. Yes, he doesn't know Elain well, he doesn't even know her favorite flower.
which is a rose because one time she heard about a roses field in the continent and wanted to visit it with Feyre :
“These bulbs,” Elain said, pointing with a gloved hand to a cluster of purple-and-white flowers, “came all the way from the tulip fields of the continent. Father promised that next spring he’ll take me to see them."
They sound like this 🙂

Elain and Azriel have more than just him begging on his knees. The antis can hate it all they want.
Elain and Azriel will break me and put me back together again.
Their story will be my favorite.

“Never”, Rhys said from where he finished buckling on his own weapons against the side of the wagon. “I have never once seen Azriel let another person touch that knife.” Elain looked up at Azriel, their eyes meeting, his hand still lingering on the hilt of the blade. I saw the painting in my mind: the lovely fawn, blooming spring vibrant behind her. Standing before Death, shadows and terrors lurking over his shoulder. Light and dark, the space between their bodies a blend of the two. The only bridge of connection … that knife.
I commissioned this from @mftfernandez on Instagram! I am SO in love with the art work and she really brought these characters to life!

Okay. This hate against Elain just makes me think how misogynistic society is, and people don't realize that. Do all women need to be masculine all the time to be accepted? Fight, conquer, defend, protect, compete, provide, fix and rule? What's the problem with being very feminine and not having masculine traits? Nurse, nourish, teach, assist, observe, beautify, be vulnerable and a soft human? Is this so bad? Are we really rejecting femininity and embracing masculinity as the most strong, cool and better for society?
It makes me sick.

Y'all, my husband is getting into his Elriel era and making points 😊😂
My husband as soon as I opened my eyes this morning:
Is Elain the one who lives in Rosehall? Or is it a place where you go buy roses?
Me: Huh?
H: I just finished this chapter... Rhys told Azriel to go buy presents and go to Rosehall. Does Elain live there?
Me: I think you read all of that wrong... They said a "her", right? Who do you think that "her" means for Azriel?
H: Elain?
Me: Uh... What made you think that? Can you think of another "her" for Azriel who might live there?
H: His sister? Mor?
Me: When did they mention Azriel having a sister? And Mor lives with them. Think again.
H: Oh, um... His mum's still alive?
Me: 🤦🏻‍♀️ Did they ever even mention her getting ☠️?
H: Oh, right... It was Cassial's mum who was ☠️, right?
Me: CassiaNNNNNNN! And yes, it's most likely Azriel's mum who lives there and who he's buying presents for. The place is just called Rosehall... I don't know why though. But what made you think Elain lived there?
H: I think they mentioned she and Nesta moved out... And because she likes gardening and is always about roses and flowers so it just sounds like her place... And earlier in the chapter, I think Rhys was trying to get a reaction out of Azriel about Lucien and Graysen... They're both connected to her, and Azriel doesn't want to spy on Lucien because he says he's Elain's mate. Rhys seems intrigued, because I really think Azriel likes Elain. Is he courting her?
Me: What makes you think that? Did you read it anywhere?
H: Isn't it obvious?
Me *slightly stunned over his choice of words, obviously*: What is?
H: Well, because of everything that he did for her during the war? When he went to save her and then he gave her that knife that he hadn't even let Mor or Cassial- CassiaNNNNN touch. He could have given it to Feyre, his High Lady if he wasn't going to fight and if it didn't matter so much, but he gave it to Elain. And I don't know... I just think their personalities make sense together... They seem to be the quiet ones who likes being at the side of everything or keep to themselves. They make me think of old couples who like sitting in their garden drinking tea all afternoon while the children's making a mess. *I laughed so hard at this* So I thought that's who Rhys meant lived in Rosehall and why Azriel's going there... to woo her.
Me: Not everything's about Elain for Azriel...
H: But everytime they mention "Elain" or "Azriel", the other is always mentioned right after. They keep being pointed out. Like Cassian and Nesta. I think they're going to end up together... Do they end up together in the next book?
Me: We'll see. You'll have to keep reading to find out.
H: Maybe Elain reminds Azriel of his mum... So he likes her and that's why he was protective of her...
Me *trying to gauge if I even have the mind to explain the Oedipus complex before having coffee to him*: You mean he'd court her just because she reminds him of his mum?
H: I mean, if his only family is his mum and he's actually close to her, a guy is more likely going to like a girl he knows would obviously get along with her, right..? Poor Lucien though. *chuckles* Maybe Elain will like him back at some point, but I think it's going to be Azriel... I don't know. They just make more sense right now.
If even my husband thinks it's obvious, it's pretty fricking obvious.

Friendly Reminders: Elain Archeron and Sarah J. Maas
After Elain got dragged by the fandom for being boring and useless online, Sarah J. Maas- knowing full well that she as an author loved Elain and couldn't wait to tell her story that has been brewing for nearly a decade- wrote this:
Tumblr media
-ACOSF
And this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Feysand Bonus Chapter, ACOSF
After certain members of the fandom collectively decided that Sarah J. Maas so *obviously* ended Elriel because she may not be able to have Azriel's babies and nothing is more important than that, or she owes Lucien her time because she is his mate and he deserves her, she wrote this:
Tumblr media
-HOFAS
It's almost as if the author of the books has heard the things people said about a FMC whose book she has described as being *obsessed* with writing, like when you have a crush, and explicitly addressed and dragged the legitimately abhorrent takes surrounding the remaining Archeron sister.
Sometimes I truly wonder why one would read a book from an author they so vehemently disagree with. The author has told you her stance on these opinions. And it is... not positive. She does *not* agree with these ideas. Full stop.
I have no doubt most will be won over by Elain's book. But I find theories antithetical to the beliefs of the author to be at best bizarre, and at worst needlessly harmful to women. And the author has made it quite clear she has no interest in catering to those ideals.

“Elain isn’t happy in the Night Court.”
Meanwhile, Elain:
“Elain, who would not eat, or speak, or do anything at all. Elain, who had somehow become the adjusted one.”
“Tending to the gardens of Feyre’s veritable palace on the river, helping other residents of Velaris restore their own destroyed gardens—she had purpose and joy, and friends: those two half-wraiths who worked in Rhysand’s houshold.”
“She glowed with good health. Except … her brown eyes were wary. Usually that look was reserved for Lucien. The male was definitely in the family room.”
“And then Elain burst out laughing. Howling, half-sobbing laughs that sent her bending over at the waist, gasping for breath.”

Azriel smiling as he notices Elain clutching her fork.
Azriel lending Truth-Teller to Elain.
Thinking about
Elain asking Azriel about flying.
Elain flying for the first time in Az's arms.
Thinking about
Azriel not liking physical touch.
Azriel reaching for Elain's touch.
Thinking about
Azriel bringing back the light in Elain's eyes.
Elain making Azriel's eyes so bright.
Thinking about
Elain saying no one sees her.
Azriel being the first one to notice she's gone, him figuring out she's a seer, him lending TT to her, him listening to her gardening plans until early in the morning.
Thinking about
Azriel being known as scary and cold. (Death)
Elain not balking from him. (the trembling fawn)
Thinking about
Azriel being self-conscious of his hands.
Elain calling his hands beautiful.
Thinking about
Azriel blushing at Elain's compliment.
Elain blushing at Azriel's smile.

Elriel 🌸🗡️
I mentioned that there will be many parallels between Daynight and Elriel before Hofas came out, and indeed, there were parallels, such as the copy pasting of the Elriel bonus scene.
Now Lidia thinking this:
Tumblr media
Marriage is permanent beyond even the mating bond, excuse me? doesn't that sound like something Elain would think.
Marriage goes beyond any biological or instinctual bond. It's a conscious choice, your choice to commit, share your life, and become a family with the person you love and have chosen as your partner.
"Love would trump even a mating bond"
"Elain shall wed for love and beauty"
Waiting for the Elriel parallel 🥰

*taps microphone* Is this thing on?
I'd like to give my perspective on something, from someone who started out in the ACOTAR fandom as part of the general audience, and who has a sister that is not apart of fandom but has read the books.
I read the series back in November 2023 in about 2 weeks. I stayed off of social media for a bit until I decided to make a Tumblr account.
After reading the books, I wasn't sure if the series was complete. It didn't feel complete. The first three books focused on Feyre. Nesta had an entire, almost 800 page book dedicated to her. For me, it was natural to assume, "Oh, Elain is next!" because logically, that was the only thing that made sense. Why would two sisters have books, but the third wouldn't? The series would seem incomplete.
Flash forward, and I find out that yes, there will be more to come in the series. However, at this point, I was still unaware that a bonus chapter for Silver Flames existed until a friend casually mentioned it. I asked where to find it and I began reading.
The first part of the bonus chapter confirmed what I already believed from reading the books. Azriel and Elain share mutual feelings. Truly, I didn't need confirmation in the bonus, because there were moments in the books that I already had picked up on. The bonus was just a nice surprise. Something fun.
But imagine my shock when I decided to insert myself into fandom space as a casual reader, and see folks who are 110% convinced that the next book's main character is going to be a secondary side character that was introduced about 40% of the way into the 4th book.
You don't have to imagine my shock, because I'll tell you. The moment I set foot into this fandom, I have been beyond confused. Bamboozled. Befuddled. And honestly, a bit gaslit.
Prior to this bonus chapter, I assumed everyone thought it was obvious and picked up on the pattern. The first sister gets a few books to explore her powers, heal, and fall in love. The second sister gets a book to do the exact same thing. The third sister would get a book...to do the exact. same. thing.
There was a week where I had zero idea that the bonus chapter existed. There are STILL people who have no idea that the bonus chapter exists, and may never end up reading it. These people are not on Tumblr, Reddit, Instagram, or Discord, discussing in depth theories and potential love squares. They are solely relying on canon text.
So, genuinely, what do you think their reactions are going to be, if the next book does not focus on Elain, the third sister, but rather a priestess, who was part of someone else's story, who was only just introduced in the very last book, who does not have any ties to the plot? Yes. They will be lost, too.
My sister, who is part of the general audience, and is not present in fandom spaces, has the same opinion. The idea of Azriel and Elain not ending up together doesn't make sense to her. Prior to showing her the bonus, she had already assumed Azriel and Elain would be the next pairing in the next series. Because she had only read the canon text. The canon text that is available to everyone. The bonus is not.
So, essentially, what I'm trying to say is, if the next book does not feature Elain as the main character, and Azriel as the main love interest, with sprinkles of Lucien here and there because he is still important because of the mating bond, then there will be a gigantic chunk of casual readers, who are not involved in fandom spaces, that will be utterly confused at the direction of the story. Because for people who are not on social media, they are only using the canon books. Their information is only coming from the canon books that are available for all readers. If information in bonus chapters is supposed to be important, then it would be featured in books for everyone to read.
