Summary: Abby is the starting linebacker at UW and when her team starts to falter her coach decides to get the team into ballet, in order to teach them that grace and stability is important in football too. Abby is just as upset about her teammates about this, until she sees her pretty new ballet teacher...

This whole house smelled like total ass.

Dina was excitedly walking next to me trying to guide me to the alcohol, as Ellie looked for her friend.

"Abby!" Ellie exclaimed from my left.

I turned to look into the direction she was facing and just about shit my pants.

It was the pretty blonde from the football team.

She smiled at Ellie and they gave eachother a one armed hug in greeting.

"So this is Dina and Y/n, guys this is Abby," Ellie introduced us both.

Abby nodded her head at Dina in greeting before turning to me and hesitating.

"Hey, yeah no we've met," She said to Ellie signaling at me.

"Oh? Where?" Ellie inquired curiously.

"She is the little ballerina that got stuck teaching the varsity starters," Abby told her with a smirk.

"Y/n, you didn't tell me you were teaching the varsity starters,"

"I, uh, I guess I didn't think I would be running into one like this," I answered Ellie before turning to Abby, "Well, Abby, its nice to properly meet you,"

"Pleasures all mine," She answered with a friendly smile and a slight head nod.

Oh wow fuck me.

"Okay, well were gonna go get drunk. Bye!" Dina said, pulling my arm and dragging me away towards the kitchen.

I decided to just pour a vodka soda for me and Dina while we chatted.

"So what do you think of Ellie's friend?" She asked, sending a smirk my way.

"Oh, god, was is that obvious?" I reddened and hid my face with my hands.

Dina guffawed before answering, "Only to me I think, but I get it. She's totally your type,"

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"Oh c'mon! She's tall, super built, big nose, commanding presence, athlete. She was basically made just for you,"

"Ok ok fine, she's perfect, but I am way to awkward to ever initiate anything,"

"Well, maaybe just try talking to h-" Dina cut herself off with a large gasp, "Ohmygod Jesse is right there!!" She gasped, pointing to the boy across the room. "I'm gonna go talk to him,"

"No Dina don't leave me,"

"I'm going in,"

"No, D, please!" I begged her as she strutted off.

I turned around and started digging for stuff to make myself a drink, but the stupid grenadine was too high on the shelf.

A hand reached above my own and grabbed and handed it to me.

"Thank yo- oh its you!" I said, turning around to face the person who had helped me.

"What, wishing for someone cooler?" Abby teased with a smirk.

"Ugh, no. Dina is off with Jesse now, so, I'm gonna drink it off," I told her, gesturing to Dina and Jesse making out on a couch.

"Oh god lame. But I kinda get it, I was the same with this one boyfriend,"

My head snapped back to her with a look of disbelief, and before my brain could catch up to my mouth, I blurted; "You aren't gay??"

"No? What, you are?" She asked, matching my disbelief.

"Well, yeah," I said as if it was obvious.

It really isn't, but I'm trying.

"Ah, well, you had me fooled," She said, face tinged slightly pink.

"Yeah, me too" I answered her, exhaling through my nose in an awkward laugh.

"Well aren't we a pair, breaking our stereotypes and whatever," She told me, confidence fully back on. I laughed a little before she continued, "So do you, like, have a girlfriend?"

"Oh, uh, not at the moment, no. Trying to take it easy right now," I responded, before following it with "You must have a boyfriend, though"

"Nah, no. You could say I'm taking it easy too, real focused on grades and sports,"

"What are you studying?"

"Pre-med. My dad's a surgeon, so its kinda in the genes,"

I was shocked by her answer, its not often you see a football player spending their time actually studying something useful instead of doing drugs and partying.

"What about you?" She asked.

"Oh, uh, the arts. I do painting and stuff. And obviously dance, uh, and also law, I'm looking to go FBI," I said, getting embarrassed by my much lamer response.

"Oh, that actually sounds really cool. I bet you have a shit ton of work," She told me, seeming genuinely interested.

"Yeah, well, you only get a scholarship once,"

"Yeah, yeah, true,"

The conversation was starting to falter so I told her to follow me.

"Hey Ellie!" I greeted as we approached the girl.

"Hey, are you ready to..." She made a signal with two fingers signing she wanted to smoke.

"Hell yeah," I answered before turning to Abby, "Wanna join?"

"Of course I do," She responded with an excited glint in her eyes.

We squeezed our way through sweaty bodies and makeout sessions all the way to the back of the large house where the yard was.

Ellie reached in to her right pocket, dug around for a bit, scowled and then reached into her left pocket where she took out a small joint and a lighter.

"Y/n?" She said my name, gesturing the blunt to me, "Wanna light it?"

"My pleasure" I held the joint up to my lips, the flicked the lighter and lit it. I instantly felt the hot smoke flow through my throat into my lungs. I turned my head away from the two in front of me out of politeness and blew out the smoke.

15 minutes later we were all stoned.

"Hey. Hey, beautiful, aren't you like not 'sposed to do this? Cuz you, like, are gonna be a doctor or whatever?" I spoke while turning to Abby.

"Maybe, but I think all be ok," She chuckled at my state.

She held her weed good.

I didn't.

Ellie held hers good.

I really didnt.

I went to answer Abby when Dina came running up to us.

"Hey guys!" She greeted us.

"Heyyy D," I said to her elongating every syllable.

Dina took one look at me before turning to Ellie with the look a mom would have after her kids stole a cookie from the jar.

"Ellie, come on. I told you not to let her do stupid shit like this anymore, you know she's a total lightweight,"

Ellie looked around defensively and held her hands up in surrender, "Hey man, she asked for it. Besides I didn't do any, yaknow, for protection,"

Dina sighed, grabbed my arm, grabbed Ellie's, and told us were going home. I shouted a goodbye to Abby that was somewhere along the lines of "Bye gorgeous see you in class!" and shuffled alongside Dina out the door.

The drive home was filled with Ellies playlist, and when me and Dina climbed up the stairs and into out apartment we bid our goodnights.

My mind was fuzzy the whole time though.

It was full of one thing.

Abby Anderson.

matildas platonic fic-ice bath

Training was harder today as they had a match incoming so the physios suggested ice baths to help the tillies' muscles.

At 10.30 training was over everyone started making there way towards the ice baths.

"We're doing ice baths?!" Madi called out "why'd no one tell me?!" She asked shocked

"Coz if you knew you would've skipped" macca said truthfully

"Not true" madi said quietly rolling her eyes while everyone gave her the 'your joking right?' look and she sighed "fine, whatever you guys are right" she puffed and started walking back to her room to sneak off early thinking everyone forgot about her doing an ice bath but mini caught her and brang her back but heaps of the other girls got off coz they didn't need one.

"Mads you have to do your ice baths" mini said sternly as she walked with her to the ice baths

"Sorry mini" madi said, sad that she had made mini mad or disappointed in her. When they arrived the media manager said she wanted to film a little bit of everyone getting in the ice bath.

Mini led madi to an ice bath where Kyra was waiting to go in and they waited to be told what to do.

"Ok we'll get Kyra and Madi in this one, mini in that one with Lydia, ellie in there and E-V-E in that one by herself" she explained and everyone went to the ones they were directed to. "Ok we'll start with over here with you hopping in first and we'll do snippets of all of yous, Kay?" She asked and everyone nodded. She followed them to the bath they were directed to go in and started filming.

*someone got into the ice bath with her phone in her hand

"Did you see how graceful that was?" She asked looking at the camera

"Very graceful, like a ballerina" *madi called out to her and did a little spin while having her arms above her head and everyone laughed

"You totally could've been a ballerina" Kyra commented

"Thanks Kyra" she said and the two laughed again at the sarcasm that Kyra said it with.

"Ok Kyra your up" the media manager called and Kyra stepped up to the bath

"Good luck Ky" madi called

"What do you mean your coming in after me" Kyra said laughing and shaking slightly

* "I am in" Kyra said to the camera

"No your not" madi said quietly in the back round and Kyra glanced at her then back at the camera with a shocked expression

"My foots touching the floor" she said proudly*

"Kay Madi your up" the manager said and madi groaned while Kyra laughed

*madi went up the steps with her phone in her hand

"Kyra can you pretty please hold this real quick?" Madi asked holding out her phone

"Yeah as long as we can watch TikTok together because I forgot my phone" Kyra said in a desperate/ serious tone

"Ok" madi said laughing as she reached the top step

"Can I jump?" She asked looking at the media manager

"I wouldn't recommend it but if you want" she replied and madi shook her head before getting in

"My feet can't touch the floor!" She yelled kicking her legs to keep her afloat

"If your feet don't touch the floor your not in properly" Kyra said and they laughed as madi went to the edge to hold on*

"Ya Kay?" Mini asked walking over to madi seeing her chattering and holding onto the edge for dear life

"Yep-pp" madi said holding a thumbs up and popping the P due to her chattering lips.

* "if youve never been to the Antarctic, this will replicate it" E-V-E said*

"It's so cold!" Madi called out shivering while Kyra nodded her head and Kyra held up madi's phone for Face ID before they began watching TikTok's.

*madi and Kyra in the pool shivering while lyds is singing in the back round

"What are you guys watching?" The man behind the camera asked Kyra and madi

"Edits of ourselves" madi said proudly and Kyra laughed "joking we're watching Matilda's edits because we're die hard fans and would do anything to meet them and wanna be exactly like them one day!" Madi said acting like a fan girl before her arm slipped and she fell into the ice bath and got up to her the collar of her Matilda's shirt wet as everyone laughed at her*

*E-V-E holding up the piece sign with her muesli bar half eaten*

*minis bout to get in her ice bath with lyds

"10 degrees for 10-15 minutes is the appropriate temperature and duration for an effective ice bath" Tony called to mini as Ellie walked past*

* "you sit in here for, the gurus say about 10 minutes but for me 6 does the trick for E-V-E." E-V-E says to the camera while holding up her shirt to not get it wet.*

"Kay Ellie you wanna be on film too?" the manager asked Ellie and Ellie just shrugged

"Yeah sure, why not?"

*ellie was on the top stair holding her thumb up with one hand and her phone and a drink in the other before going to hop in.

"Don't drown mini" Tony said to mini as she got in and you could hear madi and Kyra's distant laughs.

"You reckon I'll be able to touch the bottom?" Mini asked

"Well Madi can't so we'll just have to see. You'll have to tread water for 10 minutes like her" everyone laughed. Ellie was lowering herself in, her shirt in her mouth to not get it wet.

"Do you want some more ice?" Tony asked her "some ice thrown in for some good measure?" Ellie nodded her head "you do?" She nodded her head again "where's the ice machine?" He asked going to find it*

*mini was in the ice bath now.

"I hate ice baths, why do I even do them?" Mini asked

"Umm can I get a step please?" Madi asked

"Yeah someone get madi a step, she can't reach the bottom" he called out and someone brought a step for madi to stand on. Mini cringed as the water got colder*

steph came into the room in her puffer jacket ready to hop into the bath with Ellie.

*steph pulled up her puffer jacket a little and lowered herself down into the water

"Oh no" she said feeling the cold water

"Mhmmm drop" ellie said*

*Kyra and madi were in the ice bath flapping their hands trying to stay warm

"High knees" madi said trying to do high knees on the step but nearly fell but luckily grabbed onto kyra and almost making her fall aswell.

"Oops sorry" she said hugging Kyra from behind and putting her head on the older girls shoulder and smiling innocently

"Cool vibes!" Lydia said from the ice bath behind them "it's cool!"

"It's cool vibes" Kyra said putting up the rock and roll hand signal

"cold vibes!" she said matching Kyra hand signals "Did anyone set a timer?!" She asked as an after thought

someone put their hand up saying they put on a timer and that Kyra and madi could get out now.

"THANK THE LORD!"* madi called out as she swam to the side to get out of the ice bath Kyra following but hit madi's step.

" your step was in the way!" She called out to the girl who had just got out and was running to Caitlin who had a towel

"I'm sorry" she yelled back as she reached Caitlin who was now holding the towel out waiting for her so she could wrap her up while Kyra had to grab one herself (perks of being the baby of the team)

"Thank y-you I'm so c-cold!" Madi said her teeth chattering as she spoke. Now that she was out of the water and the breeze was blowing on her she felt colder than she did in the ice bath. Caitlin wrapped the towel around her freezing figure as madi pulled it tighter around her body.

"All good go stand in the sun" she instructed and madi quickly left to go outside Kyra following when they met Charli outside.

"Hey little one!" She said happily opening her arms for madi to hug her and she did

"Thanks Charli I'm getting warmer now" the young girl said as kyra went behind madi and hugged both the girls

"Me too" she said they laughed before going to sit in the sun for a bit.

ellie was focused, intent on watching your every move. as the show came to a close, dina dragged ellie backstage, “c’mon, i saw you back there. mouth open with drool. you are gonna talk to her and that’s final.”

ellie protested, trying to pull away. “no. dina..no.” she attempted to go back, “i can’t dina— besides, what if she doesn’t like gir-” suddenly her body was shoved into yours, causing you to turn around.

“oh, sorry. was i in your way?” you apologized to the green-eyed girl. “i-i..uh..m-my..” ellie stuttered out, her cheeks flushed red. she was speechless, and her mind begged her mouth to say something, but it was impossible.

admiring you in the low-light, your hair slicked back and away from your face, with your stage-makeup enhancing your smile, her heart thumped in her chest. ellie didn’t trust herself to make a move. with fear settling in her stomach, she already knew that she was wrapped around your finger. ellie was willing to put her heart on the line for you, allowing for you to decide if you wanted to keep it forever and never give it back.

Shi’al Valorum — Canonical Timeline

ALL-LOVING HEROINE: Shi'al — at least, prior to the rise of the Empire wherein she BECAME HER OWN ANTITHESIS due to Darth Sidious’s machinations — was renowned throughout the galaxy at large for her kindness, compassion, and empathy. An idealist at her core, Shi’al always believes the best of everyone, and is adamant that the galaxy is inherently good. Shi’al will not hesitate to provide second chances, and strives to encourage redemption for those who have done evil. In her later years, after the fall of the empire, her immense compassion leads to her pitying Dark Siders such as Darth Sidious and Darth Tyranus instead of fearing them.

* In the FORCE SUPPRESSED universe, there exists an EITHER/OR PROPHECY which speaks of a being who will “either guide the lost back to the light, or plunge the galaxy into endless night.”. Shi’al is revealed to be the child described by this prophecy — she is capable of either being the ALL-LOVING HEROINE who helps redeem those lost to the dark side, or becoming a COMPLETE MONSTER worse than Sidious who destroys the light to create a Sith Empire.

MIRROR CHARACTER: To Count Dooku. Both Dooku and Shi’al began their stories with an earnest desire for positive change in the galaxy and used an inherited public platform to make it happen; however, both were also manipulated, led astray, and corrupted at the hands of Darth Sidious. While corrupted, they share the ferevent belief that their sins are righteous.

BLUE BLOOD: By virtue of her status as the sole child born to House Valorum, Shi’al is a member of the Coruscanti Aristocracy. Shi’al both subverts and personifies this trope throughout her narrative; she uses her inherited social power as a stepping stool for her activist career to fight on behalf of marginalized communities, but during Palpatine’s reign as Emperor, she loses touch with the galaxy’s populace in her effort to construct Sidious’s ironclad public image.

CHESSMASTER SIDEKICK: To Palpatine. Shi’al is one of Emperor Palpatine’s closest advisors and, as his Press Secretary, the architect responsible for creating and maintaining his public image.

GILDED CAGE: Although Shi’al operates under the belief that she has the freedom to explore the galaxy and travel to where marginalized beings need her efforts most, this is naught but an illusion. In reality, she has never experienced true freedom once in her life and will not do so until Palpatine is dead. Palpatine is the puppet master that has designed almost every aspect of Shi’al’s life as part of his grand plan for galactic domination, and only his death will truly free the songbird from the gilded cage in which she is imprisoned.

PRETTY PRINCESS POWERHOUSE: She is beauty, she is grace, and she will punch you in the face. Not only is she a renowned ballerina and opera star; Shi’al also has a gift for martial arts and knife throwing that she utilizes frequently throughout the Separatist War. By age fourteen, she was capable of throwing five knives in quick succession and hitting targets dead-on while blindfolded. She held a third dan Black Belt at the time that the Separatist War ended, and were it not for her martial arts training, she wouldn’t have survived the war. This training enabled her to survive one-on-one combat with Ventress, Count Dooku’s apprentice — and it also got her out of more than one tough situation relatively unscathed.

Synopsis: Victoria Shard was a former member of the popular idol group [ Poisoner ] from NRC corporations. After discourse with her group leader, Victoria decided it was best for her to leave and pursue her solo career in a record label run by her parents.

It had been half a year since her separation from her old group, and Victoria had never been more successful. But now she has a new problem. She must return to NRC corporations in order to mentor the seven idol groups.

Ellis Clawthorne is a member of [ (Co)-connect ] the most recent group under NRC'S belt. With no experience as an idol, Ellis must persevere in order to succeed and pursue her dreams.

Will both girls be able to adapt to their current situations?

Victoria resisted the urge to smile at the group she was currently watching.

She wasn't able to believe it at first, but now she feels proud to know that [ (Co)-connect ] were incredibly fast learners. Not to mention incredibly patient with her mentoring.

In a way, it made her feel more at ease as their personal mentor.

Their harmonies worked so well that it didn't surprise Victoria that Crowley paired the seven of them to be in an idol group together. No matter the chaos, they would always be able to deliver.

And holy hell, do they deliver.

Noticing the subtle yet near-invisible smile on Victoria's face, Mayuu hummed satisfyingly and smiled as well. Although hers was more visible compared to the woman next to her.

"They all improved greatly…"

"It's all thanks to you, you know."

Victoria scoffed, drinking from her cold water bottle."I wouldn't say that…" she muttered, not looking in Mayuu's direction.

The latter chuckled."Well, I would. And I just did. Besides, it's okay to take credit for the success of others." Mayuu commented, "Just as long as you take the necessary amount of credit."

Victoria nodded lazily and continued looking at the rest of the group, her cheek leaning against her knee.

Nothing seemed much different.

Carol's voice remained mature and calming. Yuuta continued to be endearingly provocative.

Juvia's dancing was less fast-paced and showed more emphasis on how to express her body without smiling too much. Miren appeared focused on his guitar, strumming its strings with a look of amusement in his eyes.

Chizuko appeared contemptuous as if she had something on her mind as she strummed the strings of her bass.

And Ellis danced along the remaining space in the dance studio. As graceful as a ballerina, with her pirouettes and arabesques perfectly executed.

Victoria noticed Mayuu pursed her lips and raised a brow."Is something on your mind?" She asked.

The receiver of her question only chuckled."I guess…. We've done several interviews before you arrived, but…. The group members in particular aren't fully prepared for interviews…" Mayuu admitted.

Silencing herself for a couple of moments, Victoria pondered over what Mayuu told her. And after a couple moments of silence, she looked back at her.

"I think I can help with that."

Circe didn't like this. Not at all.

He and the rest of [ Poisoner ] stood outside of the main corporate building of NRC corporations. Waiting for their new manager.

Who replaced Vil's father.

Without anyone noticing, Circe sent Vil a not-so-subtle scowl. A way to silently scold him for making such a foolish decision.

Vil's changed. Circe knew that. And people can change after several years.

But he didn't like Vil's change. Especially since only a couple of years before this, he found deep admiration for him.

And it's been replaced with unresolvable hatred. And it only increased the longer he had to stand with the rest of the group.

Epel stole a glance at Circe and felt regret. He always felt it ever since Victoria left. And that regret only increased once Jiyoon left the group.

He and Circe knew the group was a shell of its former self. And that Rook and Vil were giving their fans false hope.

When Epel tried to reach his hand out to Circe, in an attempt at trying to comfort him and calm him down, he half anticipated Circe to slap his hand away.

And he did. And he didn't even bother to steal a glance at him.

"Are they coming yet?" Circe put little effort into sounding the least bit bothered by what they're currently doing. Vil narrowed his eyes at him in response.

"Patience, Circe." Vil calmly suggested. Without him noticing, Circe rolled his eyes and only got frustratingly bored as time continued to pass.

Until the limousine entered. Two limousines.

Rook tilted his head, looking rather confused."Eh?"

The first limousine stopped in front of them, but to their surprise, it wasn't Koral.

It was Aguri.

Vil crossed his arms and lifted his head a little. Circe resisted the sudden urge to snort at Vil's attempt at assertiveness toward his friend.

Though, he couldn't help but think Aguri looked a little unusual. Sure, he looked nice with his casual navy blue sweater, but… Why did he look like he was going on a date?

Was what Circe thought as Aguri walked past the four of them.

Vil hummed."Not bothering to say hello?" He spoke. Aguri sighed but didn't waver. He didn't even bother to look at Vil. Like it was a sign that their relationship was deteriorating.

"I don't need to. I'm not here for you."

"I'm your friend, Aguri."

"Not the point. And that isn't my real name."

"And would you prefer me to refer to you as Y/-"

They were cut off by the sound of the second limousine's door opening. Revealing a girl in a bubblegum pink dress with reddish brown hair.

Aguri knew it was Koral, and didn't seem to stiffen until her manager exited the vehicle.

When the manager sent Aguri a smirk and a flirtatious wave, that was when he sprinted into the building.

Yuuta was content. He already knew what to say in interviews since he's had the most. Mostly because of the numerous rumors surrounding him, but also because of his general popularity.

Ellis, on the other hand, had no idea what to do during interviews. While the other members mostly knew what to say, Ellis mostly kept herself shy. Almost completely silent.

As optimistic as she was, she couldn't help but feel she was a bother due to her inexperience and decided to keep quiet during most interviews unless she was asked a question.

Suddenly, she felt Juvia poking her forearm and gave her a questioning brow. Juvia sighed softly and pointed at Victoria, who sent Ellis a pleasing smile.

"Ellis? Are you all right?"

Feeling her face go warm in embarrassment, she nodded rapidly at her mentor.

"Y-Yeah! S-So, do you need something?"

"Yes, actually." Mayuu answered for Victoria, slowly approaching Ellis."We're gonna be teaching all of you how to pull the strings during interviews."

The words Mayuu said not only confused Ellis but also the rest of the group.

Except for Yuuta of course.

"Pull the strings?...." Juvia murmured, tilting her head off to the side, feeling rather bewildered by Mayuu's words.

And out of nowhere, Yuuta rested his head on Miren's shoulder, and let out a low chuckle.

"Oh, Juvia….." Yuuta trailed his sentence as he sent Miren a knowing look.

".... She means we're gonna learn how to manipulate the audience and the interviewer."

Yuuta's words alone were enough for Victoria's smile to transition into a cynical smirk.

Oh, love this! Of course, it changes from time to time.

I reeeeeally adore a lot of the IAD heroines, so I'm going to limit myself to two from their ranks, 10 heroines total.

Neomi Laress, Dark Needs at Night's Edge--A former burlesque dancer turned ballerina turned vengeful (and horny) ghost??? Tbh, the moment when I knew Neomi was a forever girl for me was when she was attempting to prove that Conrad could see her by doing a striptease for him while he desperately tried not to react. She's both fun and sweet and tragic and bitter. She's super gentle, and at the same time very sexually bold and borderline hedonistic. This is one of those books where I genuinely didn't know how there would be a happy ending even though I knew there had to be, and I was clutching my pearls.

Ellie Peirce, Lothaire--I've actually spoken to people who are reading this series and haven't read Lothaire yet, and they're so bummed because they know his Bride is a human... And I get that on paper, the Big Bad falling in love with a mortal girl sounds disappointing and cliche. But Ellie is SUCH an icon. Brash and defiant with a cunning streak a mile wide and a bone deep vulnerability. I love that she's tough as nails, while also having a really tender heart, even if she tries not to let him see it. Like, she's never afraid of getting her hands dirty if it'll save her life (how much do I love a heroine who sees that the villain hero is DESPERATELY horny and is like "I'll fuck my way out of this") but then you have scenes like her sobbing in his arms about the hopelessness of her situation, or her being genuinely really hurt and degraded by the way Lothaire treats her after sex.

Elayne/Elena, Shadowheart--A new favorite of mine, just a really gorgeous heroine with an amazing journey. She begins as this very innocent, sheltered girl with no concept of her true importance, and she develops into this natural political mind who makes some truly tough decisions. I'm a sucker for books where the heroine is a with a Bad Man who mentors her in his evil ways (see: Lothaire lol) and this is a perfect example. Allegreto literally teaches Elayne to be his undoing, and I don't know exactly how aware he is. Also, Elayne's discovery of her sexuality and what she wants from him is so, so good. Like, her being all "UMMMM I WANNA PRETEND YOU'RE MY CAPTIVE PRISONER AND FUCK YOU WHILE YOU HANG FROM THE CEILING *hides face*" is so... weirdly.... cute? I love her.

Nellie Young, The Duke Gets Even--I loved Nellie before she got her own book, and I loved her even more after. She really gets a very "hero" type story. She's seductive and can't get any closer to a man than what a casual fling provides. She's rebellious and breaks the law for what she believes in. She has a deep-seated pain and woundedness she wants to hide from Lockwood so badly. Nellie is a true female rake and she's executed so well. The moments when you can hear her internal screaming as she realizes she's in love? Adore her. Also, would for sure recommend this book to people who are a fan of Megara from Hercules, now that I think about it.

Isabel Beckinhall, Thief of Shadows--She's beauty, she's grace, she picks up grievously injured men from the street and strips them down to tend to their wounds and makes them rock hard. I love that Isabel is shamelessly sexual, I love that she withholds herself from the kid she's caring for (her dead husband's illegitimate son, at that) because she doesn't want to let herself care; I love that she's so naturally caring and bighearted, but has been hurt so many times she can't bear to let on. Her breakdown about her past is such an achingly sad moment, but she has such strength and resolve. Winter gets a lot of attention for this book, and rightfully so, but Isabel is a fabulously done heroine; the ideal "refined lady getting seduced by the masked vigilante", but flipped in her superior experience, her jadedness contrasting with her desire to feel alive again. Also, she absolutely blew that boy's mind. In many ways.

Hester Wyatt, Indigo--I call Indigo one of my favorite rake/virgin romances, which I don't think a lot of people expect when they hear about the book at first. Indigo does have a very emotionally heavy plot (and it's also very fun and adventurous) but there's also a classic "quiet and practical virgin blossoms under the affections of a ladykiller in love" plot. Hester has been through so much, and she's a lot older than her years, and she stands up for what she believes in with such quiet passion... And I kind of love that, for all that there is a big Plot Plot, there's also this evolution of Hester and her ability to accept pleasure and joy. I also just really love her "oh FUCK" realization when the big Gesture is happening.

Gia Mancini, Mafia Madman--YEEEEEEEEEEEEAH BITCH!!!! Gia is a big favorite of mine, because she is such. Such. SUCH. A bratty heroine. I love the contrast of Frankie falling in love so quickly despite her attempt to put up a fight with Fausto, to Gia genuinely being like "I am going to fuck. This. Man. UP." with Enzo. She's so angry (rightfully so) and bitchy (very rightfully so). How can I not adore a heroine who gets kidnapped by a loony tunes hero and locked in a cage... realizes he's watching her through cameras... and does naked yoga...? That's icon behavior. Also, trying to escape a yacht by grabbing a couch cushion and jumping into the ocean. It's no wonder Enzo fell so hard.

Sara Fielding, Dreaming of You--I will go to the mat for Sara. I adore this bitch. Shoots a man dead within... what? The first 5-10 pages of the book? Is like "oh fuck; oh shit; whoops" before sizing up Derek Craven and asking him to let her shadow him at his club like he's a fucking goblin king and she's owed a favor for saving his life??? Gets so horny she would've let him take her virginity on like? A COUCH? AT A PARTY? Honestly, Sara is a total chaos agent. It's no wonder he's in tears over her at the end.

Lennix Hunter, The Kingmaker/Rebel King--Such a GREAT heroine. You get everything from her. The "don't call me kid, don't call me baby" anger, the activism and passionate beliefs, the brokenness and determination to keep going. Also, she's SUPER hot, it must be acknowledged. Never has it been more understandable for a hero to become absolutely obsessed with a woman.

Ling Suyin, The Dragon and the Pearl--I really love Suyin because she's so composed and seductive and knowing, while also having a truly innocent core. She doesn't want to fall in love, because she knows it will break her; but she can't resist. She's jaded beyond her years, she's cool, she has a deep desire to be loved and vulnerable. I find her very sweet and almost tragic? Everyone thinks she's a sly femme fatale, but she is in fact baby.

Notes on amygdalines/Ampersand

There’s no fan wiki for Axiom’s End so there’s no fan-made list or descriptions for amygdalines online... so here ya go! (Yes, spoilers, obviously- for the 2nd book, too)

PHYSICALLY

FEET: Eagle-like feet, does not clarify if the 4th back toe is included or if this only meant three front toes. (”It looked like a bird’s footprint, if the bird weighed three hundred pounds and only walked on its toes. It had a texture to it, upon examination, like creases, joints leaving their imprint in the sand.”)

LEGS: Book 2 confirms their legs are digitigrade, which lines up with them being toe-walkers (being a toe-walker with straight legs would be a pain). I.e. they really do have deer-like legs.

TAIL/STANCE: No tail, but natural-born amygdalines have a tail. The ability to stand with their back horizontal to the ground without a clear counterbalance means they have something keeping them from falling over. My first assumption was it’s due to their mechanical musculature holding them up. But in book 2, when Ampersand’s brain functions mess up, he starts losing balance and his body falls as if heavy. Could actually be held up by the gravity-changing tech they utilize in other things. Would explain why big Obelus was described as being light “like a ballerina.” (”-lack of anything behind it like a tail to balance its center of gravity, with long arms curled in front of it like a praying mantis.”) (”Once it settled, its posture reminder her more of a deer than a dragon, its arms folded neatly under its midsection...”)

ARMS/FINGERS: Two thumbs, four fingers. (”...the two thumb-like appendages securing her front while the other four fingers locked around her back, holding her in place like a clamp.”) (”-each of his fingers were at least two feet long, and the palm itself was smaller than a human’s.”)

NECK: Ampersand’s neck can form an S-curve. This means his neck has to, well, be long enough to form an S-curve. How graceful. Nikola is described as having a longer neck than Ampersand. (”...its head raised high and long, slender neck curved into a slight S.”)

BREATHING: Don’t think it’s ever clarified if the slits on their neck are horizontal or vertical... slightly unclear if by “two openings” it means two openings on both sides, or if it was meant to mean there were two openings overall- one on each side. My fiance says I’m an idiot and it probably does mean two openings per side of the neck, for a total of 4 overall. I say I’ve made too much fanart with only 1 hole per side to be fussed over it, lmao (”Amygdalines had two openings on either side of their necks about the size a deflated balloon that allowed air in and out, and it was from there the noises came, layering on top of each other like drums.”) (”She thought she could even feel him breathing, not the in-and-out of human breath but a constant stream like an air conditioner.”) (”Two holes on the side of his neck...”)

HEAD: Ellis stated Ampersand has a large head size relative to his body in her Q&A. They also have ridges over the eyes that give the illusion of expression depending on head angle, but I didn’t grab a quote about that, sorry. In book 2, it’s also described as shaped like a dirigible, so their snouts may be round. (”It had an oblong head like a dragon, if the dragon had no jaw and no nose...”) (”In profile, his head reminded her of the heads of the oil well pumps that dotted the near entirety of the greater Los Angeles metro area.”)

TOOLS: He seems to conjure tools out of no where, like syringes, fluids, and balls of light. In book 2 it’s described where these come from. As a machine, these tools are literally just inside of him, and he removes them when needed. However, some of them ARE influenced by the shape-shifting, such as the needles. I doubt all of them are since his shape shifting is “limited.” (...most of the automation he used was inside his own head, his tools willed into existence from the microscopic drones that covered his entire body, flowed through him like blood.”)

EYES: The most described body part by far. Almond shaped eyes on either side of the head (due to natural amygdalines being herbivorous). Ampersand has large eyes that take up nearly his whole face, and they glow amber, though the exact shade seems to change with the lighting. Eye color and size varies among individuals. They can blink, their eyelids described as wax-like. (”... although there was always one spot in those luminous eyes that was brighter than the rest, he seemed to be able to have multiple focuses.”) (”... she could see the bits that seemed to glow were actually reflected light like a cat’s eye, but instead of one retina, there were thousands, perhaps millions, clustered in a nuclear mass in the middle and thinning out on the edges. They moved like solar panels, catching light as the creature changed its focus.”)

CREST: Based on description, he probably has six fronds, meaning they’re likely lined symmetrically on the back of his head. It’s not clear how long or wide they are, though. In book 2, despite being described as not being like a triceratops in book 1, they’re described as being somewhat like a triceratops after all. Crests are used like antennas on bugs, for hearing and other information retrieval- though amygdalines can’t smell [doesn’t mean they can’t parse out air contents, though]. ”...and even had a sort of crest that jutted out from the back of its head like a feather headress.”) (”The crest on the back of his head was less triceratops and more like half a dozen thick, silvery banana leaves that curled downward like a rosebud when at rest but perked up like the petals of a sunflower when he was alert or excited...”) (”...strange no-man’s-land between a triceratops crest and palm fronds.”

SKIN: Described as white, almost blindingly so in the sun. But also described as off-white or grey in some parts. That might be because the skin is reflective, so under different lighting wouldn’t look pure white. In book 1, it’s a little unclearly exactly what the “skin” is made of. The texture is smooth one way and rough the other, described as looking like canvas, which doesn’t line up with something reflective and metallic. In fact, it is never actually described as being made of metal at all- we just assume it because they are machines. In book 2, it’s revealed the skin is made of nanites, as well as the teleportation pad and invisibility cloak. (”...instead of individual living cells, his body was covered in billions of microscopic drones, which lent him some limited shape-shifting ability...”) (“...billions of self-replicating nanites”)

CARAPACE: Their bodies are often described as a “shell,” in reference to being mainly mechanical. Brains/nervous systems can be transferred to new “shells” like hermit crabs. There are some descriptions of the back popping open like a wing, which is where the liquid metal (nanites I think) comes from. I didn’t grab too many quotes though, sorry. (”The carapace of his back was among the parts of him that were most insect-like, and though fused into one piece, it reminded her almost of the wings of a cockroach or a praying mantis.”)

GENDER & SEX: Prefers pronouns for whatever the humans call them, because amygdaline’s do not have gendered pronouns. They see it as useless as having pronouns based on religion, ethnicity, or other traits. So far, does just seem to have two main sexes, egg laying or not, comparable to humans. Ellis stated Ampersand would have an ovipositor if he retained genitals, and Ampersand confirmed he has a female egg-laying karyotype. However, “female” amydalines are larger than “male” ones [like praying mantises and other insects], so by human standards Ampersand is perceived as male by humans, and actually prefers humans to continue seeing him that way. Ironically, in the same conversation Nikola confirms to have a male karyotype, but he is larger (even bigger than Ampersand) and assertive, not small and delicate like Cefo or the propagandists (who I assume have male karyotypes). I.e. Nikola may be the gender equivalent of a “male” he/him human being feminine. He breaks the gender stereotype for his species.

ABILITIES: Gravity manipulation, heat manipulation, ability to form barriers, minor shape-shifting, invisibility, semiautonomous plate (pseudo-teleportation), turn organic matter to ash instantly, crumple large objects into smaller (still dense) masses. Obelus walks “like a ballerina” despite being gigantic. However, according to book 2 certain smaller castes of subordinate amygdalines, such as Cefo, are not built with telekinesis. This either insinuates smaller castes don’t need to hold themselves up with gravity manipulation, or parts of the telekinetic abilities are separate from other ones. Or maybe I’m thinking too hard. Either way, it’s only mentioned in passing, so as of book 2 there’s not much info on the limitations of lower castes. I assume not all castes have the same abilities, but text doesn’t go into detail. For example, Ampersand’s shape shifting abilities, his needles, his ability to “teleport,” may not be shared by all castes. Obelus-in-Cefo’s body ran off, didn’t he? He didn’t teleport. Maybe he couldn’t. (”Non-similar amygdalines weren’t supposed to have any telekinetic capabilities like Ampersand did. Their bodies weren’t designed for it.”) (”...the electromagnetic supports that lent his body that antigravity elegance give way, and he nearly collapsed under his own weight.”)

LANGUAGE: Three types of communication. Spoken language (with written equivalent), network language (like texting inside their heads, essentially), and high language (absence of medium; you see what I see, I see what you see). Amygdaline language is polysynthetic, meaning in a nutshell instead of using words to form sentences, each word is a sentence, and the small parts of said word-sentences cannot be separated from the rest of the word-sentence and have the same meaning. Some human languages are polysynthetic; they are difficult to translate to something like English because of just how specific each word-sentence has to be. Take out a single unit of sound in the word-sentence and meaning is totally different or may have no coherent meaning at all. That’s why it was so hard to build a translator in book 1 and they don’t even bother teaching humans how to understand it out loud. It’s hard enough translating human polysynthetic languages into English, let alone a whole new alien one.

BODY LANGUAGE

Eye contact: I think they treat eye contact like a cat does. That means depending on social context, eye contact is threatening or meant to show comfort and trust. For example, Ampersand staring Cora down at the beginning of the book when he was threatened by her vs. the way he watches her near the end of the book, when they have grown close. The propagandists stare Cora down when they’re curious, but they are unafraid of her and seem to maybe even like humans. Examples that break the mold are the Genome avoiding eye contact with Cora when it’s scared, but Espras avoiding even looking in Cora’s direction because he refuses to open communications with humans.

Note that amygdalines can look at someone without facing them. Looking at someone with a small amount of directed lenses vs. full-frontal eye contact probably has different connotations. So Espras could still be looking at her from the side of his eye, with a smaller amount of lenses.

Fingers: The positioning of their freaky long fingers seems to be related to emotions. When threatened, Ampersand spreads his spider-like fingers out “like a bear trap.” He does it towards Luciana when they meet, and the secretary of defense. Then when he’s being polite, he laces them together in front of himself, as in the scene where Ampersand visits Cora at her bunk. The neutral stance seems to be keeping arms close to the body with fingers at ease. Then, it may be that placing their hands behind their backs is a submissive gesture, as Luciana suggests. In book 2 it’s confirmed placing their hands back is submissive and non-threatening.

Heads: The most obvious body part used in body language. Ampersand tilts his head down and spreads his crest upwards when he’s angry at Cora or threatened by the secretary of defense. It also shows excitement, as in the scene where he tells Cora he wishes to take her anywhere she would like because it pleased him. Conversely, one can assume an opposite gesture, one where the crest is flattened back, or curled down, must be an emotion opposite of excitement. Whether this would be sadness, jealousy, disgust, general upset, ect, I’m not sure.

Eyes: In book 2, Ampersand only half-lids or closes his eyes when he’s depressed or given up. Otherwise, his and other amydgdalines’ eyes stay wide open.

Body: Frightened amygdalines make themselves small. They crouch and “roost” (a position similar to laying like a deer) more frequently when afraid. In the beginning this is a position Ampersand is almost always in. When he meets the Fremda group he very rarely does this, and it’s probably because he comes a secondary leader of the group. At that point he only squats, roosts, and lays down when he is being friendly with Cora. The roosting position- when in context of friendly company- might be akin to a cat or dog showing it’s belly. It’s a non-threatening gesture of comfort and trust in that context. In book 2, Nikola roosts like this in front of the Fremda group to be non-threatening to Esperas.

Circling: I don’t know yet what this action is for. Possibly a protective thing? Ampersand circles Cora in the desert before he sits when she expresses fear of desert animals. But Nikola circles Cora in a different context, after he takes her into his metaphor. It could also just be that circling doesn’t mean anything very deep, and it’s a coincidence that it was done more than once. I THINK there is a third instance of it, but I’m not through with the second read of book 2, so stay tuned..

Reading Romance

Updated June 28th, 2021

I read a lot of different types of books, but I’ve never been a romance person. After watching Bridgeton, I decided to give them a try. Here are my thoughts.

Follow me on this journey.

What I’ve Liked:

- They are really quick to get through. I’ve read some 350 page books in a day.

- The plots can be crazy, which is also really fun.

- A lot of the characters are fun and the dialogue can be witty.

What I’ve Not Liked:

- I have an issue with a lot of the romances, as the men seem to sometimes force the women into uncomfortable situations.

Now, let’s talk about what I’ve read:

Bridgerton: The Duke and I by Julia Quinn:

- 2 out of 5 stars.

- I found this couple boring.

- She raped her husband, so no. He shouldn’t have lied, but that’s not an excuse to rape.

Bridgerton: It’s in His Kiss by Julia Quinn:

- 4 out of 5 stars.

- I loved the couple. There was some problems with the male lead deciding to sleep with the female lead, so she’d have to marry him, as he is not his father’s true son. But I still liked their witty dialogue and the female lead was fun.

Bridgerton: When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn:

-2 out of 5 stars

- It��s one of everyone’s favorite books in the series, but I found this couple to be so boring. I feel like she would have been just as happy with her first husband and for the life of me, I don’t get why the guy was so into her. She was boring.

Bridgerton: An Offer From A Gentleman by Julia Quinn:

- 4 out of 5 stars.

- This book had insane energy. It was silly and fun. The man lead jumps out of a window, scales down a tree, and rushes to a cold lake because the female lead got him aroused and he was like: “Um, not now.”

- I didn’t like that Benedict was so dumb not to see that Sophie was the girl he had met three years earlier and I HATED that he kept telling her to be his mistress, even after she told him that wasn’t what she wanted for herself.

- Though the end in the jail was pure insanity and I was here for it.

First Comes Scandal by Julia Quinn:

- 2 out of 5 stars.

- While dialogue was witty and the couple was cute, I felt this one dragged on for way too long. I thought it could have been at least 100 pages shorter.

Love is Blind by Lynsay Sands:

-2 out of 5 stars.

- The plot and characters were just too simple.

The Lost Duke of Wyndham (Two Dukes of Wyndham #1) by Julia Quinn:

-4 out of 5 stars.

- I clearly have a type with couples in Julia Quinn books: they need to be fun, bicker, and have a lot of chemistry. I LOVED Jack and Grace. I loved the charm, wit, and fun of this couple.

A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark #2) by Kresley Cole

- 2 out of 5 stars

-So...while I like the idea of the world and the overall story that seems to be forming - I COULD NOT get behind the male lead basically raping the female lead throughout the book. Mostly because he hated that she is a vampire (she's actually half) and once he learns she's not a full vampire, he's just like - "My bad. Love you." And she's cool with it?! - Also, what is going on with all the erection? Because the way I read it, this man was walking around with one for 90% of the novel. I don't know, that just strikes me as very uncomfortable and slightly embarrassing..? I don't know, I'm not a man.

No Rest For The Wicked (Immortals After Dark #3) by Kresley Cole

- 3 out of 5 stars

-Kaderin is cursed or blessed with being an emotionless killing machine. Until she meets Sebastian, a vampire who hates what he is. Confused, she runs and he follows. Kaderin spends most of the novel being a bad ass bitch and Sebastian spends most of the novel discovering that he likes the way she is.

-He decides to help her and that he wants her to achieve her dream, even if it means not getting her.

-It was a fun and fast read and I ALMOST forgive Cole for the grossness of her last novel.

Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night (Immortals After Dark #4) by Kresley Cole

-3 out of 5 stars

- I liked this one more that A Hunger Like No Other. Maybe because Mari was a little bit tougher and stronger than Emma. Or maybe because Bowen seemed to have a better understand of boundaries.

- They were a sweet and fun couple, who didn’t really shy away from their challenges. They actually discussed issues!

- But, I have to take away a half point, because again with the whole werewolf NEEDING to claim his mate thing. With all the erections and sex every which way. It was about much for me, especially as a new romance reader. At times, I found myself thinking: “Please calm down.”

-Another thing I enjoyed was the discussions about “monsters” being people and wanting things “normal” people want.

-But, I have to add this, and it’s really more about the series as a whole: each book is about 350-360 pages and there is a looming evil throughout, but it’s not truly faced until the last 50 pages are so. I’d like this world - which is being set up to be very interesting - to be fleshed out more.

Dark Needs at Night’s Edge (Immortals After Dark #5) by Kresley Cole

- 3.5 stars out of 5

- I've now read 4 of them and have had ALOT of mixed feelings about this series. - We start with the hero, Conard: a vampire who hunts his own kind. When he drains people, he takes their memories - which has made him a bit. . .unstable. Interesting (as several have said) every male character within the story (some of whom have REALLY mistreated their wives at different times) discuss how Conard is dangerous and should be "put of his misery" and yet - he treats Néomi very well. He doesn't mistreat her and honestly tries to help her - even if it means they may not be together. - A vampire bounty hunter and a ballerina ghost somehow make a very sweet, angsty, and awesome little romance. It felt free of that "fated mate" stuff from the other novels. Yes, Conard believes that Néomi is his fated mate, but she's also dead. So, there is none of that "have to half you/will stalk you/alpha man" stuff that gets a bit old in the other novels of the series. I really enjoyed the fact that the couple didn't actually sleep together until page 200ish (out of 369). Which was actually nice, because it made me believe that they were a couple who had depth and actually loved each other because of more than being "fated mates". (Not knocking the other couples in the series, but I do sometimes feel that they actually fall for each other only toward the end of their novel.) -So over all, I liked this one. My favorite so far.

Dark Desires After Dusk (Immortals After Dark #5) by Kresley Cole

-3 out of 5 stars.

- I liked the main couple just fine - both as a couple and as individuals.

- But, I’m reading these books one after the other - usually one or even two a day - and the formula used for each book is becoming very clear: Male lead finds his fated soul mate and either denies it or goes after her. Female lead is uninterested, but can’t help be drawn to this new guy. The fight or have misunderstandings. They have sex - it’s usual oral. They have more miscommunication. The “big bad” - whose been mention throughout the novel- appears in the last 50-or-so pages. The couple defeat the “big bad”. They get married. It’s getting a bit old - even if I like the characters.

The Viscount Who Loved Me (Bridgertons #2) by Julia Quinn

-4 out of 5 stars.

- Loved the couple and their humor. A fun and quick read. I think I read it in 3 hours?

Kiss of a Demon King (Immortals After Dark #6) by Kresley Cole

-2 out of 5 stars.

-While I liked the leads as individuals, I found their relationship to be a bit too toxic for my tastes.

Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks

-3 out of 5 stars

-A light and fluffy read. Our ML was respectful and our FL was sweet. Just a cute morning read. Nothing overly special, but honestly far sweeter than a lot of the romances I’ve read in the last month and a half. I may forget it in a month, but I enjoyed it while I read it.

Untouchable (Immortals After Dark #7) by Kresley Cole

-4 out of 5 stars

-A very interesting read. Who knew you could be creative with ice? I have to admit, I really enjoy the Wroth brothers and their ladies. These men have respect and, unlike some other MLs in this series, they seem to be more willing to let their Brides take the lead.

Demon from the Dark (Immortals After Dark #9) by Kresley Cole

-4 out of 5 stars

-This book just worked for me. Carrow was an amazing heroine and Malcom was a sweetheart. Add in little Ruby and you have one amazing family.

Dreams of a Dark Warrior (Immortals After Dark #10) by Kresley Cole

-4 out of 5 stars

- Regin the Radiant is doomed to relieve her tragic love affair with the berserker Aidan the Fierce. They will meet, fall in love, she will kiss him, and he will die within 24 hours. So far, they have relived this tragic fate 4 times, and this time Regin is determined to NOT let that happen. The problem? Nix gets involved and Regin is captured by The Order - a group of humans bent on killing all Lore creatures. And one of their leaders just so happens to be Declan Chase aka Aidan.

- I loved a lot about this book, such as the way all the stories are really starting to come together and blend into one another. I also loved Regin here - she doesn't break or bend and she understands that Declan isn't a woobie in need of saving (like so many of the other women in this series) - she knows that he has been through something terrible, but she doesn't excuse his actions. It isn't until Declan shows he's trying to change that Regin accepts him.

- A really fun read and maybe my second or third favorite in the series.

Lothaire (Immortals After Dark #11) by Kresley Cole

-4 out of 5 stars

- I have very mixed feelings on this book.

- I loved Ellie - she was intelligent, forward thinking, and strong. She planned her death, twice. She understood Lothaire would come for her and made sure her family was hidden. She decided to seduce a ages old vampire in order to save herself. She often played him like a fiddle.

-But, Lothaire was a complete jerk for 85% of the novel. I get it, he's damaged and he's old and mentally unstable, blah blah blah. To be honest, he didn't make up for his misdeeds - even if he did promise to take Ellie's kid brother Trick-or-Treating. (That was weird, too. Don't make a villain/anti-hero a sudden sugary sweet brother-in-law.)

-And, how could he not see that Ellie was his Bride?! He was physically and mentally attracted to her. With the other one, they didn't seem to have anything in common, expect: we like killing.

-So while I adored the female lead and I liked certain scenes, the book felt off to me.

MacRieve (Immortals After Dark #13) by Kresley Cole

-3.5 out of 4 stars

-While I liked some aspects of the book, MacRieve was so horrible to Chloe. I understand he has past trauma and is in major need of therapy. (Like most of the men in this series.) But, he treats Chloe horribly and while Chloe has a bit of spunkiness, she is also just way too forgiving and nice.

-I also have to take away from half a point because it ends on a cliffhanger that may never be resolved!

A Rogue By Any Other Name (The Rules of Scoundrels #1) by Sarah MacLean

- 4 out of 5 stars.

-This is apparently a Hades and Persephone retelling? I can see that.

- I really enjoyed Penelope, who really just wanted a nice life, but that wasn’t to be. She just had a little too much “darkness” in her and she wouldn’t be happy with anyone but Bourne. Bourne could be a jerk, but his feelings for Penelope was great.

- The side characters who will be getting their own novels? Very excited to see them. I think this was my first Sarah MacLean and it was one I really enjoyed.

Ghost (Boston Underworld #3) by A. Zavarelli

- 3 out of 5 stars.

- I read these out of order, so there were people in this that I want to learn more about.

- This was my first mafia romance and, I believe, was my darkest book yet.

-Talia and Alexei were two very damaged people, who were still damaged together. They didn’t magically become well because of their feelings for one another. They may have healed a bit, but they were still working toward betterment at the end of the novel, and I like the realism of that.

- I read this novel in two days, and despite the darkness of the novel, I really enjoyed it. The writing style was enjoyable and I like the way characters from several different novels came into and out of the story. It’s very clear that A. Zavarelli is working on her own little universe, and I always like when authors do that.

Filthy Rich (Five Points' Mob Collection #2) by Serena Akeroyd

- 4 out of 5 stars.

- Again, read this in a couple of days.

- And again, I really enjoyed that Serena Akeroyd is making her own little universe and dropping hints about future stories.

-Inessa was an interesting character, because while sheltered and innocent, the girl was just waiting to let her inner “darker” sexuality out. I liked her a lot - she could be very innocent and sweet, but also very catty and straight forward.

- Eoghan and Inessa, despite of the large age gap, fit one another so well. They were one another’s missing pieces and they just really fit together.

The Sweetest Oblivion (Made #1) by Danielle Lori

-4 out of 5 stars.

-The chemistry between Elena and Nico was really great.

-I enjoyed Elena’s POV - she was attracted to Nico, but she also hated herself a bit for it. Not just because he was supposed to marry her sister (don’t worry, sister is in love with someone else), but also because of her own past.

- Nico was a little harder to read, because we didn’t get as much of his POV.

- Knowing that this is yet another mob series that follows several characters - who are slowly introduced in each book - makes me really excited to meet and read about more characters.

Bound by Honor (Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles #1) by Cora Reilly

- 4 out of 5 stars.

-Aria may be too good and too pure for this world. Luca’s love for her was very sweet. Aria x Luca fan.

- Enjoyable and fast pace.

-I enjoyed the way characters from future novels in the series appeared/made cameos throughout the novel.

-The main couple had a bit too much miscommunication, but they were young and dumb, so I forgive it.

Bound By Duty (Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles #2) by Cora Reilly

-3.5 out of 5 stars.

-I loved Val. Especially at the start of the novel when her main problem was: “I’m over 20. This is my second marriage. I’m still a virgin. I’ll be damned if I don’t have sex.”

-Dante on the other hand - he took the “Ice King” trope a bit too far. Did he truly love Valentina or was it more about protecting his children and being fond of Val? I’m sorry to sad I didn’t feel like he loved Val as much (or even in the same way) as he loved his first wife.

Bound by Hatred (Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles #3) by Cora Reilly

-3 out of 5 stars (maybe closer to a 2.5/2.8)

- I know that Matteo and Gianna are a lot of people’s favorites, but their bickering and Slap-Kiss dynamic got a bit old. I also found Gianna really annoying in Bound by Honor, and that didn’t change here.

Bound by Temptation (Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles #4) by Cora Reilly

- 4 out of 5 stars

- Maybe the most romantic couple? I mean, if a man is willing to start a mob war for you...come on.

Bound by Vengeance (Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles #5) by Cora Reilly

- 4 out of 5 stars.

- Maybe Growl/Ryan and Cara are a little unbalance and maybe their relationship is dark and twisted, but it works. Again, get yourself a man who is willing to start a mob war for you.

Twisted Loyalties (The Camorra Chronicles #1) by Cora Reilly

-3 out of 5 stars.

- Like Bound by Vengeance, Twisted Loyalties was a way of tying the two series together. But, I didn’t like this one all that much -

- Fabiano’s obsession with Leona (and it felt like an obsession) actually made me fear for her. Leona was “pure” and safe and reminded him of his sisters with her loyalty toward her mother. So, of course Fabiano would want to be with her. But, it was clear Leona wanted a different path for her life - especially at the start of the book.

-I’m not convinced of Fabiano’s development in this book. He still felt emotionless at the end, and I’m not sure if his love for Leona was actually love or an obsession and a need to have someone like his sisters in his life.

- Leona's innocence and naivety were fine, but she annoyed me at times. She wanted to run and I kind of wish she had made it out of Vegas. Maybe then I’d see the so-called love Fabiano had for her.

- I have to mention the Falcone brothers. We have been hearing so much about how terrible their family is. Here we saw them from Leona and Fabiano’s POVs, and they were just as crazy as promised. Nino, no emotions? Interesting. Remo, a true psychotic. Savio, he’s a child, so his “adult” situations made me uncomfortable. Protect Adamo!

Twisted Emotions (The Camorra Chronicles, #2) by Cora Reilly

-4.5 out of 5 stars

- Nino and Kiara were really cute. Maybe the sweetest couple I’ve read by Cora Reilly. I didn’t care for his cheating, though I get why he did it. I just didn’t like it/find it was needed. And, I wanted/needed more chapters from his POV, because it felt like Nino fell in love too quickly. I want to read their next book.

-Nino is supposed to be "emotionless”, having “turned off” his emotions due to childhood trauma. (This was told to me 1000x in the novel, btw). BUT he tries so hard to be sweet and considerate of Kiara. He buys her a piano! He understands her past trauma and tries (in his own way) of being respectful and protective toward her - even standing up to Remo! He follows Kiara’s lead and it’s actually very sweet.

-Kiara is one of the strongest female leads in this series. Yes, she was scared of men - especially Remo - but that is understandable considering what she lived through. She needed to be protected and I liked that she was able to heal, but she wasn’t completely healed in the end - she still had a ways to go. And, her friendship with Adamo was the cutest thing. They were so sweet with one another! And honestly, despite his ‘I don’t like you or what you’ve done to Nino’ attitude - Remo and Kiara are headed toward brother/sister territory.

Twisted Pride (The Camorra Chronicles, #3) by Cora Reilly

-4 out of 5 stars

-So...Remo is in major need of intense therapy. Like, years of intense therapy and I’m not 100% convinced that Serafina didn’t suffer from Stockholm Syndrome. But, as Serafina muses - she and Remo have a twisted love for one another. It’s clearly not 100% healthy, but it works for them. Serafina is allowed to be herself with him and Remo pulls back (a bit) from his destructive behaviors with her.

-Remo...who knew he could be such a family man? Like, you could tell, when he started to fall for Serafina. He slowly started to try and be a bit of a better person. That scene where they got married? And it was just his brothers, Kiara, Fabiano, and the babies - and Remo said it was fine, because it was just the people that matter? Sweet.

-Serafina stood up for herself and didn’t let Remo phase her (well, not as much as he wanted to) and I loved that. She was strong, self-assured, and she wanted more out of life than what the Outfit was willing to give her.

-Speaking of the Outfit - um, why did they not believe Serafina when she stated - several times - that what they think happened with Remo wasn’t actually what happened? Why did her father and brother treat two BABIES like trash? And they tortured Adamo - a fifteen year old child!

Twisted Bonds (The Camorra Chronicles, #4) by Cora Reilly

-4 out of 5 stars

- I was disappointed to see that 60% of this novel was just Twisted Pride from Nino and Kiara’s POV.

- I feel like this one was not as well written as the past novels in the series. I saw a lot of typos and things didn’t always flow well. That said - I really do love Nino and Kiara.

Twisted Hearts (The Camorra Chronicles #5) by Cora Reilly

-2 out of 5 stars

-So, Savio loses all his character development in this novel and Gemma deserves better.

Devil in Winter (Wallflowers #3) by Lisa Kleypas

- 4 out of 5 stars

- I loved Evie and Sebastian. I am reading this out of order, so while I knew Sebastian was the villain of the last book - he was so perfect with Evie here. Is it cliche that the “bad boy” has spent his whole life waiting for the sweet and strong girl - yes. But, did I love it? Also yes.

The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever (Bevelstoke #1)��by Julia Quinn

-4 out of 5 stars

- Very sweet and fun friends to lovers romance.

One Good Earl Deserves a Lover (The Rules of Scoundrels #2) by Sarah MacLean

- 4 out of 5 stars

-I know people had issues with Pippa, but I sort of always assummed she was on the spectrim. Cross was really fun - especially when he became so annoyed with Pippa, because she was different and just lived her life.

To Seduce a Sinner (Legend of the Four Soldiers #2) by Elizabeth Hoyt

-2.5 out of 5 stars

-While I enjoyed the writing style, I couldn’t totally love the couple. Japer falls for Melisande, because she’s proper and “not like other girls” or something.Melisande has loved Jasper for 6+ years, but refuses to admit it - even after she marries him and it’s clear he wants a real marriage. Eh.

-I’ll read more from the author, but I didn’t enjoy this one.

The King's Spinster Bride (Aspect and Anchor #0.5) by Ruby Dixon

-2 out of 5 stars.

-While the world building was well done, there weren’t any issues between the couple. He really loved her- he worked his way up to becoming First Warrior for her. She loved him, but was nervous because she was “old”. (She’a 33 and he’s 24). There was also some worry about marriage stuff, but over all, it was just a little read that was neither terrible nor memorable.

Neon Gods (Dark Olympus #1) by Katee Robert

-3 out of 5 stars

-While I enjoyed the main characters, the world building was poorly done. i did like a lot of the supporting characters and hope they get their own books.

Brutal Prince (Brutal Birthright #1) by Sophie Lark

-2 out of 5 stars (DNF’ed at 40%)

-People have been telling me to read Sophie Lark since March, so I picked this up on audio book. The writing is fairly good (though there are some issues with the mafia aspects), but it was the characters that made me DNF this novel.

-First: you have Aida’s family (she’s 20 and her brothers are all older (I think?) and they all decide to crash the party of a family they hate. Why? They are grown people! Aida causes a fire in the house and steals a pocket watch. And...the two families decide they should get married. Again, why...? Just pay for the damage. Since one of the sons was injured: agree to something for that.

-Second: Aida is 20. She’s also VERY immature. She plays tricks on Callum. (She actually eats a strawberry before kissing him - he’s very allegic to them). She curses and talks about how she’s a “tomboy” and how she hates the family she marries into. She’s a fairly horrible, immature, and bratty young womn. I just couldn’t root for her.

-Third: Callum is 30. He’s 30 and acts like a horny teenager. I listen to the male narrtator discuss sex and p*s*y over and over again. While Aida is verbally and physically harmful toward Callum, Callum is physically and emotionally abusive toward Aida.

-Fourth: Two toxic, immature people do not a rootable couple make. I couldn’t stand these two people and was annoyed the whole time I listened to the audio.

-Fifth: I think I would like to read more from the auhor,but this novel REALLY wasn’t for me.

Bad Guy by Ruby Dixon

-1 out of 5 stars

-This should have been half its size. There was noreal development between characters. Eh.

The Bully (Kingmakers #3) by Sophie Lark

- 4 out of 5 stars

-I read this one first, because so many people said it was the best of the series. I hadn’t like Brutal Prince at all, but I loved this one.

-Seeing the development of Dean and Cat was fun. Was Dean actually really childish for a 20+ (I’m guessing he’s 20-21), but I got it.

-Cat was great. I understand a lot of people found her “boring” in book 2, but it’s very clear that she was just waiting for someone or something to let her out of her shell.

-I’m really looking forward to book 4, as that was set up nicely.

Stolen Heir (Brutal Birthright #2) by Sophie Lark

-3 out of 5 stars

-While I liked Nessa a lot - I wasn’t totally sold on the romance.

Deviant King (Royal Elite #1) by Rina Kent

-3 out of 5 stars.

-While I find Aiden toxic, I cannot deny the chemistry between Aiden and Elsa. I don’t like that she gave in to him so quickly - especially as he had made her life horrible for the last three years - but I can forgive it, as this is a “bully” romance.

-The mystery is interesting, as are the hints of future stories with other characters.

-And, where are the adults!?

Steel Princess (Royal Elite #2) by Rina Kent

-3 out of 5 stars

-Now that Aiden has a POV, we can see that he is connected to Elsa’s past. I like that aspect, as well as Aiden trying to win Elsa over.

-And her dead dad is alive?!

-Also, I love Knox.

Twisted Kingdom (Royal Elite #3) by Rina Kent

-2 out of 5 stars.

-While I enjoyed the way the mystery was wrapped up, I’m not totally in love with it. It closed what happenedto both Aiden and Elsa, but it left a few doors opened and really doesn’t paint their fathers in the best lights.

-Getting into Kim’s head (and seeing the emotional and mental abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother) made me so sad.

- What was worse is that she was basically abandoned for EIGHT years and bullied by said ex-friends during that time because of a misunderstanding. Yes, they were eleven, but why couldn’t Xander have confronted his dad or Kim’s dad or someone during that time? Why did he have to be horrible to her at every turn? And let others do the same? And, why was he still hanging out with Kir -? I understand that he was looking out for Kim and Kir and that he still loved her (and that this is geared more toward readers in their late teens/early 20s), but - come on!

-Kim forgave Xander way too easily (a trend in this series), and I was a bit uncomfortable with the fact that right after the big secret was out, Xander decided that he wasn’t “holding back” anymore and that he would be with Kim. Like - shouldn’t you go to therapy?

-I liked the characters and some of their interactions (and those building hints for the rest of the series), but I ended the book truly believing all these characters need massive amounts of therapy.

Vicious Prince (Royal Elite #5) by Rina Kent

-2 out of 5 stars.

-Gone is the carefree Ronan of past stories. Here is the “fake smile” Ronan that has carefully been hidden for the last ten years.

-Teal’s master plan of revenge is what drives her, but only for about 20% of the novel. What was interesting was what we were told: she likes men at least 15 years older than her and she enjoys (or believes she would enjoy) some very kinky stuff.

-(Side note: I’m sorry, but - the 17/18 year olds have access to the records of their parents’ sex club? Where are the adults? Yes, it’s explained that the club only takes members who are 18+, but no.)

-Despite protests that he hates her, Ronan falls for Teal, like 20% into the book? And after having sex once - she loves him back? I know this is a series LIGHT on character development, but...what? Yesterday I could barely stand you and today I want us to be together for ever?

-And, we get another childhood tramua story, which played out WAY too fast and was wrapped up WAY to easily.

-I liked Ronan during the other books and Teal could have been really complex, but we got what we got.

a plot where muse a just needs to get away from everything so she packs up everything into her small shitty car that barley runs and just drives. she loses count of the boarders she crossed until she lands right into the middle of a small town where the population is like 2 thousand and her car breaks down. so she goes into a diner that she sees is open and she asks about a mechanic so the lady in the diner calls up her friend who happens to be muse b, the local mechanic. so muse b comes over and tells her that he wont be able to check her car out until morning bc its like 10 pm now so muse a is going to check into a motel or smth but muse b offers to put her up for the night and bc shes broke she says yeah and basically they end up banging with the intention that after tomorrow they are never gonna see each other again - wrong. muse b goes down to his shop and looks at the engine and a really important parts gone in it and its going to take a couple weeks for it to come in and basically muse a has to stay in this shitty small town for the next couple of weeks AND THEY FALL FOR EACH OTHER AND WE CAN FIGURE THE REST OUT!
