Part X
My father had taught me that most illnesses could be broadly classified into two: diseases that had a tendency to spread, and the diseases that did not.
While treating a patient with a spreadable illness, there was a high risk of the caretaker getting ill. To combat this, we had made some discoveries like: covering the nose and mouth while in contact with the patient, washing hands with soap frequently and general personal hygiene. It didn't make the caretaker infallible, but it did lessen the risk of spreading.
Azriel didn't have a cold or any other illness that spread, so I was pretty safe from that. He had an unusually high temperature paired with aches, dizziness, tiredness, and a minor stomach issue.
Rhys and Cassian winnowed Azriel to my bedroom and I helped them get him under the covers. Father had fetched a couple of bags of his clothing and other supplies which I'd need. They promised to visit frequently and left.
I sat beside him on the bed, tears threatening to spill over again as I took him in. His skin had lost its colour, his wings looked limp and he was murmuring deliriously as we settled him in. Now he looked like he was in some kind of fitful sleep, his arms and torso jerking now and then. I leaned over and kissed his forehead, sending waves of reassurance through the bond. His body instantly relaxed and the jerking stopped.
I let him sleep until I finished making lunch, consisting of steaming vegetable broth which was both light on the stomach and masked the taste of the bitter medicine he had to take. I toasted some bread for myself and took a tray upstairs.
When I gently woke him up to eat, he had trouble staying conscious at first, but when he figured out that it was me, he fought hard to stay awake. I cradled his head against my collarbone and fed him the broth from a small bowl. He hadn't eaten in days, and I didn't want him to throw up the food. I let him lie back down after wiping his mouth with the hem of the shirt I was wearing. Then, I placed a cold compress on his head to ease some of the temperature.
The medicine started working after a few hours. His body started sweating and the temperature reduced to a manageable level. It was just as Cassian had said: it was quickly healable illness, but it had come to this level because he refused any medicine. I gently wiped the sweat away with a damp cloth, then applied a soothing balm to help restore some moisture to his dried skin and lips.
As the sun dipped in the west, the villa's magic lit the candles and sconces for light. Azriel's ever present shadows weren't there, and his beautiful wings looked brittle and fragile in the candlelight.
His temperature rose a bit, though not to the previous unmanageable state. After I made him have another bowl of the medicine spiked broth, I stayed up all night trying to keep him cool with damp cloths and cold compresses. Throughout the night, there were a few times when he seemed to have awoken, but it was just his delirium talking. He was far more relaxed now, and I stayed beside him and held his hand as he mumbled my name.
I was waiting for the fever to break, which might help him return to proper consciousness. I kept a careful watch to make sure it was reducing and there were no sudden spikes in his temperature.
Somewhere in middle, he also had a nightmare, I think. I couldn't get him to wake up, so I held his hand physically and also reached out through the bond.
Finally, the fever broke on the cusp of dawn, just as the morning birds were getting ready to herald a new day. His nightmare also seemed to have eased, and he was now calm. I had the sensation that he had reached out to me through our mating bond, as we were holding each both mentally and physically.
After another round of wiping sweat, I laid down next to him for a quick nap before breakfast. I had to take care of myself too to take care of my sick mate properly.
My body was tired from the all the work, and the nap turned into two hours of sleep. The morning sunlight was spilling through the open French windows when I opened my eyes. Cassian, Rhys, and my father were on the other side of the bed, and Azriel seemed to be awake. He was propped by pillows and talking to my father in low tones.
They stopped talking and turned to me when I sat up and stretched. Azriel looked better now, not like a dead body as I had seen him yesterday. His eyes showed apprehension as he watched me.
I merely stood up and walked to the door. There was a long conversation to be had, but first, Azriel had to get healthy. It could wait until that.
"I'm making breakfast, hope you three will stay for that," I nodded at the others and made my way downstairs.
I made some savoury vegetable oats, buttered toast and put the kettle to boil water for tea. Rhys, Cassian and father made their way down just as I was finishing up. They looked a bit suspicious to me, glancing at each other and then telling me that they'll serve themselves, and I should go just ahead and take a plate to Azriel.
They wanted us to talk and clear it out. Sighing, I carried a tray upstairs.
Azriel was lying back down when those three had left, but he raised his head at my entrance. When he noticed it was me, he started to push himself upright. I moved to help arrange the pillows behind his back so he was comfortable and sat down next to him.
His body was still weak, and his hands trembled, so I fed him the food I had brought.
"How are you feeling?" I asked after a couple of spoons.
Instead of answering the question, he looked me directly in the eyes. "From the first time I saw you, I haven't had a proper night's sleep."
I exhaled audibly, returning the spoon to the bowl and waiting for him to go on.
"You were alone and nervous during Rhys's treatment without your father present. But still, you never showed it on your face and saved him. And when you shifted to the House, you were a ray of sunshine that brought a smile to everyone's face."
I looked away from his intense gaze. "Never on your face, though."
"You've made me smile and laugh so many times that I've lost count."
I wasn't buying it, and raised an eyebrow at him. "Really? And somehow I happened to not see even one of those alleged smiles?"
He replied to this statement with a goddamn smile.
I wasn't amused. I wanted to smash the bowl I was holding into his face.
I reined in my rising anger. Maybe I wasn't ready for this conversation yet. I needed more time to sort out my thoughts.
I shoved another spoonful of oats into his mouth before he could say another word. Placing the bowl back on the tray, I pushed it onto his lap and stood up. He could eat on his own.
"Finish eating and take rest," I started towards the door.
"Y/n, please, wait. Listen to me—"
I whirled on him so fast that he instantly stopped. "Say another word and I'll poison your next meal and shove it down your throat. You can't just ignore me for months, giving uninterested replies to my attempts at conversation, then reject me when we found out that we were mates. As if that wasn't enough, you have the fucking audacity to FALL SICK AND HAVE ME TAKE CARE OF YOU! JUST FUCKING SHUT UP AND LET ME BE!"
I banged the door shut behind me and stomped down the stairs, breathing heavily from my outburst.
Rhys, Cassian and my father were at the base of the stairs, trying to eavesdrop on our conversation, I guess. They scattered like mice when they saw my murderous expression. Rhys started wiping down the table, Cassian was furiously scrubbing at the dishes and father was straightening things up.
I was amused at Rhys and Cassian. Never thought the High Lord and his commander would be doing a domestic chore in my house out of fear.
Fetching a bowl from a cabinet, I scooped some food in it and sat down at the table after Rhys was done. I set the bowl down hard enough to make the table rattle. The anger was still present. They all started inching towards the front door.
"You're welcome to my house anytime," I said in a low, controlled voice, making them stand still. "But the next time you even attempt to patch things up between me and Azriel, I'll poison your food and turn your dead bodies into compost for my fruit orchard. And that includes you, father."
They all nodded wordlessly and tripped over each other trying to hurry outside.
Well.
Good thing to know that my anger rattled even the best of the High Lords in Prythian.

Every time I think of the lost potential with the King of Hybern and Nesta and Elain, I weep a little inside. No, don't walk away, please hear me out!
First of all, I think it makes very little sense that the King lets Nesta and Elaine go in the first place. He just got them made with the cauldron's powers, you don't think he'd be curious what they can do? You don't think he'd want to keep them around as an additional bargaining chip so Tamlin and everyone else doesn't get stupid ideas?
Plus it would be such a more direct way to explain the sisters trauma. Like yeah, they were stuck in the abstract horrors of the cauldron, but that was rather undetailed and hard to feel empathic to for me personally ('wow u became immortal and extremely beautiful, what a tragedy'). Meanwhile having to be around the worst guy of the book, now that's something really terrifying. Like, just imagine the sisters having to deal with the King! Elaine is more soft and diplomatic and manages to get on his good side. Nesta is stubborn and angry and suffers much, much more.
But how much sense it would make then for Elaine to stab the King of Hybern in the back! He thought he had her under his control, but no! Betrayal! And Nesta beheads him, letting out all her rage. It would be so fitting and also explain how Elaine could get so close to the King without him caring.
Not to mentioned the King of Hybern would get much needed fleshing out! We could learn his background, his motives etc. It would've been awesome! Of course it would need some re-writing of the middle of the book, maybe some sister pov chapters, so I guess it would have clashed a little, but large potions could still be the same. Maybe the rescue mission could be a bigger focus instead.

some of y'all actually need this explained to you so here I go:
The reason why rhysand keeps meddling in elaine and azriels situationship and hasn't told either helion or lucien about their relationship is because they are all part of his and feyre's political machinations to become high king and queen.
If anything ever happens to helion, lucien would inherit the day court and it would be incredibly advantageous to have a member of their family in there. That's why rhysand treats elaine the way he does. "elaine is elaine" So far in the books he has never spoken down to elaine and she has never really gone against his word or questioned his authority. They think she's easily influenced and pliable.
Now if the next book focuses on elaine and azriel I suspect this is gonna come to light. It has to eventually.
All the people in the IC have been repeatedly shown to betray their allies and so called friends, even each other from time to time. This secret feyre and rhysand are keeping could possibly blow up a lot of relationships and friendships.
feyre and rhysand are playing a dangerous game in the stupidest way possible. These two are not the geniuses some of y'all think they are.

I just want Archeron sister fluff, I want them to heal their relationship & finally be sisters.
I want Elaine making cookies, leaving the room while they cool & coming back to Feyre and Nesta stuffing their faces. Then with chocolate still on their faces, offering to help with the next batch!
I want Feyre and Nesta teaching Elaine the basics with a sword, for protection. At one point Elaine gets a good shot and nicks Nesta, making her worry and fret. But Nesta and Feyre are beaming with pride.
The sisters hanging out and playing with Nyx, all coloring together. They turn it into an art competition that Feyre has to judge. Nesta and Elaine get competitive but in the end Nyx is the winner.
Nesta sees that Feyre has a cold and forces her to get in bed, ignoring Feyre protests. Elaine finds out and brings over soup and tea. Rhys comes home to find all 3 napping in their bed.

I saw a post referencing SJMs older interview where she said we will see Elain in the next book “in some form”. What are your thoughts? That makes me worried it’s not actually her book next. Or should we just take it with a grain of salt?
Or by “in some form” could she be referencing her turning into an owl like you predicted?! Ha! Now that would be a shocker.
Either way always appreciate your thoughts! Thank you!
I am absolutely delighted by what you just said because how funny would it be if her saying "in some form" meant we will see her as an owl shifter? That's brilliant and I love it.
If SJM said, "Elain is going to feature heavily in the next book," that would be giving too much away.
If SJM said, "Elain isn't going to be in the next book much," that would be giving too much away.
SJMs response was designed so that it could literally mean anything and I think that's the point.
"in some form" could mean a book about her.
"In some form" could mean she's a side character as she's been.
Though I am going to sit here and convince myself she was as clever as you in feeding us a plot hint without us even realizing it.

Part VIII
Since winter was settling in, there wasn't much work to do outside. My father had cast a powerful spell on the surrounding grounds to keep the water pipes from freezing, and the dead branches to always find their way to our wood stores.
There was no work to do outside in the gardens, except harvest the fruit(if any) of the already existing plants and trees.
It was the season of oranges and strawberries, though, and they had grown abundantly. I kept what I needed for myself, then windowed the rest to my father to sell in the market or make wine. He sent me the wine bottles which I stored in the basement underneath the villa. Father had dug it out for storing wine and made a cold storage partition for other items.
When I was working outside, Azriel remained at a respectful distance and watched me. I had become used to it by now, and there were a couple of times where I had left some of the oranges and strawberries by the front door for him.
It was my third round of harvesting oranges and I had put up a ladder against a tree, balancing on the rungs with a basket in one hand. I carefully plucked each fruit and deposited them in the basket. There was one fruit just out of my reach, and I leaned a bit further to try and grab it. Before I knew it, I had slipped off the rung and was tumbling on my way to ground. I didn't even have the time to scream, but Azriel intercepted just in time and scooped me up, gently landing on the ground. The ladder had fallen on its side with the basket, the fruits spilling out of it.
"Careful," he breathed in my ear, and let me stand.
In Cassian's arms, I had felt excitement rush through me and made my heart race. Like I was standing on a cliff and about to jump.
Azriel's arms held me like they wanted my body to understand that I was safe, and my body responded by making me feel like I was in a tranquil bliss.
I quickly gathered the fruits, not acknowledging his presence. Leaving the ladder on its side, I entered the villa and closed the door shut.
That night, as I sank into the hot bath, I laid my head on my forearms and watched him through the window. It was almost a month now, since he started hovering around. I didn't understand it. Why did he run away like that when we discovered we were mates, and why did he come now?
I wanted to let him in and hear the answers from him, but not yet. I wasn't yet healed from the helplessness and humiliation I felt during the last meal we had together.
─•~❉᯽❉~•─
Two days later, I was harvesting the remaining oranges from the first bloom. Winter rains were frequent around these parts, and I could see storm clouds gathering in the horizon. They predicted a thunderstorm later on. Azriel hadn't arrived yet, and I didn't want him to get caught in the storm.
It began that night as I settled into bed. Azriel hadn't come at all, and it was good. The heavy rain lashed mercilessly against the windowpanes, and I fell asleep to the sound of it.

Everyone Shut Up It’s The Middle Of The Night So Whatever I Say Here Has No Reasoning Beyond Rage And Sleep-Deprivation (and also a cold)
Name one SJM book ship— that has THUS FAR SAILED—which wasn’t enemies-to-lovers. I’ll wait.
Actually, yknow what, name an SJM character in ToG who LIVED was NOT in a relationship by KoA? A SJM ship which has been accepted by the characters in which the mating bond has been rejected? Even Rhys (SPOILER FOR THE ACOSF EXTRA SCENE WITH AZ!!) says that he needs the mating bond to stay between Elaine and Lucien even though he previously stated that relationships should be about love and the mating bond is mainly about genetics and magic like wtf???
and while we’re on the topic of all the reasons I hate SJM:
name ONE acceptable reason for her to market ACOTAR as “YA Fantasy” which had my 13-year-old ass reading chapter 55 of ACOMAF?
And why the hell does Rhysand have Feyre paraded as basically his sex toy Under The Mountain, getting her so drunk she can’t remember anything whilst he is 500+ years old, she is 19, and HE HIMSELF has been sexual abused for 50 years? Wouldn’t he know what that’s like??? What was the point? (See also: when they go to the court of nightmares the first time) I don’t give a shit if it was “for her own good” or “to help her not lose herself to madness” or whatever the hell people are saying about SJM.
and don’t even get me started on mor being token lesbian (6 pages of shit and I don’t even know if she’s bi or lesbian or pan) just so what??? she’s not a bitch for stringing a guy on for 400+ years? sjm can rack in diversity points? hahahahahaha wtf about Nehemiah? Fucking Dorian and Manon coming out of nowhere when Manon was so CLEARLY not into men??? Like what can your characters not have happy endings if they’re not in a relationship?
Did I somehow forget big chunks of her books? Because from what I recall they were toxic, poorly written, and, what else? oh right MARKETING PORN TOWARDS CHILDREN
seriously if I’m wrong in any way, inform me but right now I am tired and angry (and also really fucking congested but that’s not the point)

The ACOTAR fandom is the only fandom I'm in where choosing a ship seems to imply that you hate all the other characters and I'm not sure why.
First let me just say that I am firmly on team give both Azriel and Lucien a happy ending. However that comes about I will be fine with.
I tend to lean towards Elriel, but that does not in anyway imply that I hate Gwyn or Lucien.
Gwyneth Berdara is an absolute badass. Her friendship with Nesta is everything, I'm not at all against her and Azriel ending up together and I simply lean towards Elriel because I don't see Elucien as endgame.
Which leads me to Lucien. I realize that saying I don't see Elucien as endgame is harsh, but let me assure you that Lucien is one of my favorite sjm characters. I love him. So why don't I see him with his mate? Because Elain has put exactly zero effort into him. She hasn't shown any interest in knowing him as a person (well fae) let alone as his mate and I don't want that for him. I want him to have someone who loves him for him, not because the cauldron said so. And if sjm proves me wrong and they end up together, I will be fine with it, I just feel like she has to do a lot of backtracking to make this relationship not onesided.
Choosing a ship does not mean you hate all other options. It's just an opinion, everyone needs to calm down.
