Mandarin Chinese Learning Reccomendation! Jan/15/2023
I reccomend the website Chinese Grammar Wiki, when I started getting serious about learning mandarin I was 2 years into my studies but was at a basically beginner level because I had no idea how to study and get better at something like language learning, but this website definitely helped me out. Some days I would just open up the website and read through each article and it basically burned it all into my brain because just about everything I read on there I still remember today (I last used the website 5 or so years ago). The articles are super easy to understand and gives a concise description of how to use certain words without boring you to death. It was very good for my 14 year old brain at the time LOL. my irrational pet peeve is when people write out chinese words in a way that is understandable to english speakers but not accurate
#like yes ik some sounds just dont exist in english#but sometimes there is a very easy way to transliterate it that would be way more accurate#like yall r not giving the english speakers a fighting chance man#also sometimes ppl r translating dialect yea yea i only know mandarin though#seems fitting considering the time of year

I love Mandarin grammar, it makes so much sense to me and the lack of verb conjugation is a breath of fresh air sldhskhslagslss
Like you just have a couple of singular pronouns and then you just add a particle in front of it that makes it a plural pronoun?? Incredible. You want to go from I to my??? Stick a particle in front of I!! It's so logical and I love it
(we won't talk about my over-reliance on pinyin/inability to read characters yet, I'm like 4 levels into HelloChinese I really need to start a notebook and get some handwriting practice in)

utterly non-canon thing in my villain fiancee cnovel. in which i give our mc his original older sister back.
Yang Haoran had really thought he’d forgotten what Andrew Li’s family had looked like. He had tried so hard to keep their faces in his memory, but they’d grown blurry, anyway. Had his mother had short hair? Long? What was the shape of his father’s eyes? The shape of his nose? His chin?
In the end, he couldn’t remember.
But the girl coughing smoke in front of him…
He hadn’t needed to even think for even a second to know who she was.
“Haha, this is not what I was trying to do,” the hallucination that is his older sister says in English, rubbing her temples. “Bad idea, bad idea, bad idea, what even happened…”
“Li Yizhen?” Yang Haoran says blankly.
She jolts upright, flashing an awkward smile when she catches sight of him. “Um! Hi. Yeees, that’s me! You’ve, uh–” she switches to vaguely American-accented, vaguely Taiwainese-accented Mandarin “– you’ve heard of me? Like, exclusively by my Chinese name? That’s kind of funny, since I… have no idea who you are. Sorry. Have we met before somewhere? Like, ACA stuff, maybe?”
She smooths a lock of hair behind her ear, does it so not a strand is out of place. She’d always been so careful about her appearance. Hair always perfectly straight, clothes always wrinkle-free, as if she printed herself out on paper instead of getting ready in the morning. That was just the kind of person she was – clinical perfection in her dress, as if to make up for the general imperfection of everything else about her, as if the perfect knife-edge of her eyeliner could hide the shadows under her eyes she never bothered to cover up.
Always the insomniac, his sister.
“You need more sleep,” he says.
Claire Li lets out an agitated groan. “Everybody tells me that!” she cries, throwing her hands up in the air. “Why does everyone keep telling me that! Do they think I don’t know? I want to sleep, too! It just doesn’t happen!”
He really thought he had forgotten. It had been so long. But this – like this, all the memories are coming back to him.
“Uh. Hey, are you crying?” Claire Li says worriedly. “I mean, that’s a dumb question, clearly you – I mean. You know what, I’ll just shut up now.”
…Well. He supposes he really is crying.
“Um. I mean. Do you… do you need tissues or something, I’ve got a pack in my pockets if you want it? Ah, here it is!”
She holds out the pack of tissues like a lifeline. Yang Haoran stares blankly at it.
“Uh, just… just hold out your hand. Just take the tissues. Here, I’ll just –” she inches forward gingerly, pokes tissues against his hand.
It’s real.
She’s real.
"Shit, are you crying harder. Hahahaaaa aaaah no, help.”

listening is going to be the death of me - trying to listen to chinese without some sort of visual component only results in me completely zoning out and missing everything being said and/or comprehending in the moment and then promptly forgetting what i just heard and/or thinking one word is another because of no context and then completely misunderstanding the sentence
#if anyone has any tips please share#listening has always been my worst part and best part simultaneously#growing up with chinese speaking grandparents but not being able to understand meant i got so used to tuning it out that i just do it#automatically now and idk how to turn it off#but also then certain topics are super easy for me to listen to and understand#and chinglish makes perfect sense to me#but straight mandarin? nope completely over my head#please help#mandarin#chinese#learn mandarin#learn chinese#text post

Every now and then I see screencaps that people take of C-dramas with English subs and...... Good heavens. The translations are so bad and inaccurate and often sound awkward/unnatural... that I wonder if non-chinese viewers actually understand the writing/story they just watched....
#I feel so bad for everyone involved#I saw someone say that Till The End of the Moon's writing was bad#and my initial thought was 'wow your taste absolutely sucks'#but now I wonder if it's actually because the subs didn't manage to convey the actual story properly#TTEOTM was not a masterpiece overall#but it did a lot of things right#particularly in the characterization of tantai jin#Blue Whisper was spectacular apart from a bit of pacing drag in the middle#but no one ever talks very much about it#and maybe that's because the subs were inaccurate too#Mandarin Chinese is not an easy language to sub into English#to keep the cps low enough and yet keep the poetry in the words and also not sound weird#but damn#I get that it's probably partly because the subbers are given tight deadlines and a script without much explanation or context#but what is the point of subbing something so badly that people walk away with only a shallow understanding of the story#such an absolutely pity#my thoughts
