Outdoor Learning and Risky Play
Reading Chapter 14: There Are Relationships beyond the Classroom: A Nature Kindergarten written by Enid Elliot was filled with a lot of content that I found personally aligns with some of my views and kinds of approaches I would like to engage my future students in as a Teacher. There were five guiding principles discussed as the core of a nature kindergarten located in Sooke; Environmental stewardship, environment as second teachers, collaborative learning as a community member, physical and mental health, and Aboriginal ways of knowing/local traditional knowledge. I think that these values are beneficial to foster in young children because they entail engagement with the outside world with a hands-on approach that I believe can support children's development in all spheres.
As an educator, I definitely plan to have outdoor learning opportunities be available to my students if possible. I believe that allowing young children the chance to learn through experiences guided by environmental stewardship and environment as a second teacher, can lead to promoting a sense of connectedness to the world we live in, our place in it, as well as a deeper appreciation and desire to care for it. These are worthwhile qualities to promote. I also think collaborative learning as a community member is something that can and should be supported, regardless of outdoor or indoor learning, because it strengthens the idea that community is important and of value just as much as our participation in it.
Continuing research also suggests many physical and mental health benefits of being outdoors and in natural environments. I feel that it’s important for educators, parents and caregivers to take this information into consideration when creating lesson plans and caring for young childrens needs. I also believe that supporting outdoor risky play is extremely beneficial for childrens ability to learn how to access risk through autonomous engagement with it, as well as allowing them the opportunity to develop trusting their abilities and a sense of comfort within their bodies. Aside from my beleif in the benefits I think risky play provides, being a caregiver and supporting the children with experiences to engage in it, I have memories of positive benefits observed from it. Mariana Brussoni is a reaseracher at UBC focusing on child injury prevention and developmental importance of children’s risky play. Dr.Brussoni and her team of researchers collaborated with the Digitial Lab at BC Children’s Hospital to develop a website called outsideplay.ca to help educators, parents and caregivers gain skills and confidence to support childrens outdoor play. This could be a great tool to recommend to parents and caregivers as an educator and for educators who are nervous and unsure about bringing learning outdoors. Something that Dr. Brussoni brings up in her research that I like to think about and will continue to hold onto as a compass through my working with children, is to seek optimal strategies for keeping children “as safe as necessary,” not “as safe as possible”. As an Educator, I strive to be a pillar of support for children to lean on as they need my help, while allowing them to engage in developmentally beneficial activities that grant them opportunities to learn for themselves.

How we represent and celebrate skin color matters! These conversations help children be able to stand up in their power. We need to normalize conversations about skin color differences, uniqueness, the visible and invisible things that compose our identities. This fosters pride in young children. In our classroom one of the ways we celebrate people is by having skin color drawing utensils. We want our students to be able to represent all the skin tones of the world. It’s also important to think about when a child wants to represent themselves, how do we as teachers and parents support this? How do we celebrate and bring awareness to skin color in a positive way?

Contemporarily, “discipline” can be associated with punishment. It’s helpful to remember that there is another meaning that is more helpful: regular practice. The root of “discipline” comes from Koine (common) Greek meaning “to teach.” The word “disciple” (which can have a vey different association) is from the same root (Koine Greek is the dialect in which the Christian New Testament is written). A disciple, in a positive sense, is a teacher. Back to co-regulation from etymology: There’s a saying an escalated adult yelling at at an escalated and outwardly upset kid to “calm down” has never effectively worked. Rather, co-regulation by showing empathy and understanding and demonstrating a safe environment and state within the co-regulator can help a child return to a baseline (non-escalated) state where the cognitive/rational mind is back in play. This is when cosquences and accountability can start to be addressed. #Repost @monadelahooke ・・・ Co-regulation is a new parenting buzzword, but it's been a cornerstone in resilience literature and infant/toddler mental health for decades. Somewhere along the way, behavioral contingencies (rewards/consequences) became synonymous with discipline and raising children well. The science on resilience is clear, however: the way we help children become self-regulated (one day) and develop self-control, is through the beautiful process of co-regulation. I share all about how to do it in my latest book, Brain Body Parenting. #Coregulation #resilience #responsiveparenting #mindfulparenting #consciousparenting #earlychildhoodeducation #earlyintervention #paradigmshiftparenting #reparenting https://www.instagram.com/p/ClotqSqvVuR89L8-nULVxXYRtXkwH489rw-muw0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Why does my toddler keep climbing on everything?⁣ ⁣ It’s part of the ORIENTATION schema!⁣ They are learning about spatial awareness, force, weight, and the abilities of their body. They are building gross-motor skills and developing risk taking skills that will actually help prevent injuries as they get older. ⁣ ⁣ “So I just let them climb the 6 foot high bookshelf? Ok 😳?!”⁣ ⁣ No! There is actually developmental benefits to most of what children do everyday, all day. It’s just hard for a lot of adults to see that learning because it looks like mess and trouble to us. So in this case, you can provide opportunities for safe climbing. Children who are focused on the Positioning schema also tend to enjoy positioning other items so collections of things like blocks, peg people, little logs, even stuffies. They also tend to enjoy boxes as this schema is often combined with the Enveloping and/or Enclosing schemas, as well. ⁣ ⁣ If they are climbing to jump off, they may be more focused on the Trajectory schema so you can provide safe opportunities for jumping off and onto things, and safe items to throw. Warning, hard blocks are not always the best toy for a child focused on the trajectory schema so try to provide things that can be thrown instead of constantly trying to stop throwing.⁣ ⁣ 5 items that support these schemas that you can find around the house⁣ 1.
