☰ Mikey:
ꕤ Mikey doesn't even remember what the fight was about this time, it happens a lot with you two
ꕤ It starts with something small like him forgetting to take out the trash and you having to do it yourself but it always ends in tears and both of you screaming at each other and saying things none of you mean
ꕤ He hates it every time, unsure why he always gets so carried away and seems to forget how much he loves you when he says all these things
ꕤ Your tears are the thing that wakes him up, silence filling the room next to your quiet sobs and hics.
ꕤ Both of you can't even look at the other and Mikey decides to leave as always, recklessly driving on his bike to clear his head from everything that's plaguing him
ꕤ You used to scold him for that whenever he came back which only lead to more and more fights but you were worried sick that one day he has to get scraped off the pavement because he was too reckless
ꕤ deciding you ist stay up until he's back, letting the small light next to the couch on as you put on your favorite show as a distraction
ꕤ the hours passed and the sun slowly started to rise when he finally came back home to find you sleeping on the couch, the little lamp still on, your show still running as you clutched onto the plushie he gifted to you on your first date
ꕤ It broke his heart to see your eyes were puffy, knowing you cried yourself to sleep and he felt even worse when he realized that he was the reason for the tears shed
ꕤ with utmost care he crawled under the blanket to you and hid his face in your chest, his body trembling when he allowed himself to spill a few tears, unsure if you'd be able to forgive him once again
ꕤ he knows he fucked up and that he shouldn't have ran off like always but he doesn't know how to apologize to you when things were said he didn't mean, unsure if you'd believe any of these words
ꕤ He falls asleep in your arms, hands clutching onto you out of fear you'd leave him but you wouldn't. Not over some petty little fights like these
Tumblr media
☰ Draken:
ꕤ Draken didn't mean to call you a cheap whore when you were the one getting harassed but his temper took the better of him
ꕤ Of course he didn't mean it and he beat the guy up that dared to touch you like this but the stinging pain of bruised knuckles took away his ability to think properly
ꕤ He blamed you for the negative attention even though he knew it's wrong and he was just angry at the guy but he still took it out on you
ꕤ You looked at him shocked, eyes wide before tears collected in your beautiful eyes and you returned home, ending your date early and locking yourself into the bedroom
ꕤ Draken cursed himself when he let you go, knowing better than to run after you and beg you for forgiveness even though he wanted to apologize and pull you into a tight embrace
ꕤ He stayed out for a while longer, driving aimlessly around town before getting you the biggest bouquet he could find
ꕤ Once at home his heart ached at your quiet sobs that managed to break through the bedroom door and he gently knocked, leaning his forehead against the door only to hear you throw a pillow at the door on the other side “go away” you mumbled heartbroken but loud enough for him to hear
ꕤ He didn't protest and just sat down at the door, his back resting against it with the flowers on his lap as he rambled about how sorry he is and that he was in the wrong and how much he loves you
ꕤ He was pretty much begging for your forgiveness because you're the best thing in his life and he didn't want to lose you under any circumstances
ꕤ You needed a long while to calm yourself down, eventually wanting to talk to him face to face but when you opened up the door a sleeping draken fell into the bedroom, his hands still tightly clutching onto the flowers in his sleep
ꕤ the sight made you frown and you gently sat down to place his head on your lap, kissing his forehead “I'm sorry, too” you mumbled and let him sleep a moment longer
Tumblr media
☰ Hanma:
ꕤ fighting with Hanma is actually a rare occurrence, you two have little petty fights all the time but you end up laughing about it while calling each other all the names you know
ꕤ Real fights are rare and heartbreaking when they do happen from time to time but if they do, there's a real reason behind it and not just him forgetting to empty the ashtrays
ꕤ They also escalate quite fast, screaming at each other and often times shoving the other around. You would never hit the other but the frustration was far too big to behave properly
ꕤ It was just pointing fingers at this point because he came home with hickeys covering his neck. He claims nothing happened but how can you believe this?
ꕤ You ended up leaving the apartment, fed up with his behavior and he threw whatever he was holding at the door the moment you closed it behind you out of sheer anger
ꕤ Hanma would thrash half the apartment - but only his belongings while you were gone, not understanding how you can trust him so little
ꕤ Yes he was out with Kisaki and yes there were women with them but how is it his fault they can't behave and are all over him? He even told the woman who latched onto his neck off
ꕤ He was weirded out by the sudden affection in the first place, hating women who throw themselves at him when he was trying to maintain a healthy relationship for once
ꕤ So he didn't see a reason to apologize to you, texting you exactly what happened and swearing on his life that nothing happened
ꕤ You really wanted to trust him but his reputation made it hard so you ended up asking Kisaki who wouldn't lie to you, knowing you'll castrate him if you ever find out so he told you exactly what happened
ꕤ You came home hours after you left and Shuji sat amongst the wrecked things, the entire ashtray full, a bottle of alcohol half empty next to him and blood shot eyes but he wouldn't apologize, unable to get over his own ego
ꕤ When you did apologize he pulled you onto his lap and held you close “I told you, you can trust me. I would need to be dumb to betray the only good thing in my life” he mumbled, clearly not entirely sober but it didn't matter since he was speaking the truth
ꕤ You ended up falling asleep in his lap, cuddled up to his tall frame and his hands didn't let go of you, too worried that you'll be gone when he wakes up

THE BEST FRIEND
Tumblr media
ꨄ. SYNOPSIS: perhaps you shouldn’t have waited so long.
ꨄ. CONTENT WARNINGS: unrequited love, mostly angst, hurt & some sort of comfort? best friends trope, one mention of murder at the beginning, a little bit of baji x reader
bold italic quotes = letter excerpts
PROLOGUE. | SERIES MASTERLIST.
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ ♡•°`.
“it’s impossible for anyone not to love you. has anyone ever told you that?”
there were times in which even a district like shibuya — always vibrant and full of life — was eerily quiet and void of people.
people you’d want to be around with, at least. people who made you feel safe roaming the streets at this hour. right now, you didn’t feel all too comfortable walking past streets with alleyways looking awfully sketchy.
every tiny sound made you walk faster than before, it be a cat scratching at a trashcan, a breeze howling against buildings, or leaves crunching under your shoes. you just wanted to get this over with and head back home into your trusted four walls.
you grunted as your ran face-first into someone you hadn’t seen, which you wanted to blame your terrible night vision for.
the figure didn’t move and you tried to stay calm. you uttered an apology and tried to rush past them, careful not to draw too much attention.
maybe they were just minding their own business. they didn’t have to be a murderer or anything.
“you shouldn’t be out here by yourself at this time,” the person suddenly called out. you halted. “someone got murdered right over there two days ago.”
the shiver that ran down your spine at the husky words was inevitable, your eyes darting over to where he pointed to show you the place was just a couple feet away from where you were standing. it didn’t help that the boy said it with so little emotion.
“thanks for telling me… i just really need to drop by at the nearest local duty pharmacy,” you responded. under the halfway functioning street light, you recognized a very tall boy, perhaps around your age, so 15 or 16 years of age.
the dragon tattoo on the side of his head drew your attention. it didn’t necessarily elicit bad thoughts, it just looked very unique.
“i’ll accompany you.” his offer took you by surprise; it wasn’t like you had been used to others being nice to you before. when he continued walking towards your destination, you quickly joined him, barely able to catch up with his long strides.
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ ♡•°`.
“how could a person be a best friend, mentor, older brother and father all at the same time? you made the impossible possible.”
hanging out with the boys was exhausting, to say the least. there wasn’t anyone you particularly disliked, but they could be a lot. you didn’t really mind that they were all part of a gang, all that mattered to you was that none of them had ever made a move to hurt you or others.
“i’m saying, that’s not how you solve that question!”
rolling your eyes at the first division commander discussing with you, you threw your arms in the air. you were currently all lounging off in the warehouse, with you having joined them after they had finished a meeting.
draken always insisted on you never, ever joining a meeting of the tokyo manji gang. he would never want you to get involved with their business.
“baji, are you seriously telling me i’m in the wrong?” you shoved your purple flip phone out of the pocket of your school uniform skirt, unlocking it to click onto the calculator function. “you must be stupid if you think that three times 24 is 72–”
the whole warehouse went quiet after that. blood rushed to your face, your entire head and ears feeling steaming hot as the brunette started laughing at you. the others were too immersed in their own thoughts to listen.
“who’s the stupid one now?” bending down to your height, baji flashed you his cocky smirk, revealing sharp canines. your eyes stung with tears of humiliation.
before he could tease you a little more, because you were so easy to tease, a hand shoved the boy with long hair back to create a distance between you and him. it was him.
“baji, that’s enough.” draken’s firm voice made said boy shrug and back off. “it’s just a dumb mathematical equation.”
when you sniffled and crossed your arms in front of your chest, turning away deliberately to hide your embarrassed self from the others, a palm settled on the top of your head.
looking up, you saw draken grinning down at you ever so gently.
“don’t worry about it, everyone makes mistakes.”
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ ♡•°`.
“i failed to tell you. i thought my actions would be enough to prove what i felt. perhaps you knew all along, but decided not to talk about it. you were always thoughtful and considerate. but i wasn’t special.”
it was a gloomy day for you today. you were excited to see draken, putting in a lot of effort while getting ready and wearing one of your best outfits, just to see that he hadn’t joined the otherd at the usual group hangout today.
“wasn’t it emma’s birthday today?” mitsuya recalled. mikey wasn’t there either. unbeknownst to you, baji’s eyes wandered to look at how you’d react.
as someone who wore her heart on her sleeve, you were terrible at masking how you felt. he didn’t miss the way your face fell.
draken and emma were always close to each other. of course they were, as her brother and draken have been inseparable since middle school. you couldn’t compare to her. you’d just met him not even two years ago.
you were slowly realizing that despite him doing a lot for you and always being there for you, you perhaps didn’t mean as much to him as emma did.
after all, draken was nice to everyone.
“someone’s grumpy,” baji commented slyly, and this time, you didn’t have it in you to bicker with him. this time, there was no draken to tell him to stop either.
the two missing blondes joined you hours later, with mikey nudging his taller vice’s side teasingly while talking about how sly kenny was for having found that plushie emma had wanted for the longest time.
it made your mood even more sour than it already was, and you pondered about an excuse to leave, wanting nothing more than to curl up in bed and forget about it.
forget about your stupid feelings for someone whose heart was already taken, and who saw you as nothing more than a friend.
“hey (f/n), that’s a pretty outfit,” mikey commented, “you going somewhere?” draken glanced down at you curiously while you forced a tight-lipped smile on your face. you inwardly thanked the leader of toman for saving you like this.
“yeah. i’ll see you guys.”
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ ♡•°`.
“would things have been different if i’d just confessed to you while i still had the time? it would have been selfish. she was the first to know and love you, after all.”
ken and mikey had dropped out of high school at 17. they had big plans of opening a workshop for cars and motorcycles. by the time you graduated high school, they already had their small, cozy shop. toman was no more, and everything was well.
objectively speaking, it was. but subjectively? you weren’t too sure about that.
by the time you entered the italian restaurant, the table that caught your eyes was already pretty crowded. it wasn’t a surprise anymore, you were always late, after all.
too late. those two words echoed in your head as you looked at emma and draken sitting next to each other, her blushing feverishly when he removed something from her hair.
that could have been you.
“let’s go.” hearing baji’s voice behind you surprised you, and even more did it to feel his hand on your back, guiding you towards the table. as much as he was a jerk, you didn’t believe he did it out of ill intent to humiliate you.
the hours went by, and you had all eaten to your hearts’ content, now exchanging light jokes and future aspirations to one another. emma mentioned wanting to be a housewife, and the ken getting married to her made you want to throw up everything you’d eaten today.
“how about you?” mitsuya asked you, who had talked the least tonight. “any plans for college?” you smiled awkwardly when you felt draken’s eyes on you.
he had always wanted you to go all the way with your education, having supported you whenever he could. you were more than thankful for that.
“i actually got an admission for law in osaka.” the blonde sitting right across from you smiled so brightly, and you were sure it would have made you melt if emma didn’t have her head on his shoulder.
it was almost childish how you had tried to interpret every single of draken’s actions as a possible chance for something to develop between you two. your chances were long gone.
you had never stood one to begin with.
“i knew you could do it! you were always a smart girl.”
his compliment made you feel worse than it should have.
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ ♡•°`.
“you told me to go and pursue my dreams. i knew that if you had told me to stay, i would have. how idiotic of me, right? i ended up leaving and letting you slip from my grasp without you ever having been in it.”
after moving away for college, you hardly visited tokyo anymore. and to be quite honest, you preferred that. it was good to stay away from the source of what had drained you for so long.
draken hadn’t taken advantage of your feelings for him, no. he was the last person on earth who’d be willing to do that. but that didn’t mean it hurt any less to be trapped in a web of unrequited love.
you were in your fourth year of law school when an invitation laid in your mailbox. you just knew from the second you looked at the envelope without even opening it. it was exactly what you’d anticipated it to be.
a marriage invitation, for you to join ken ryuguji and emma sano for the most important day of their lives. you stood in front of the mailbox, staring at the piece of pretty paper for at least twenty minutes, as if it was ever going to change.
he was going to get married. not to you.
all of your dreams of walking down the aisle in a pretty, white dress, approaching him with his sweet smile, crushed to bits and pieces.
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ ♡•°`.
“i have never wished you anything else but happiness, and i still do. she makes you happy, and that’s all i could have ever asked for. i saw it in your eyes that day. you never looked at me like that.”
the wedding reception was nothing short of beautiful. catered to everyone’s tastes, it left nothing to the imagination.
the wedding of your dreams had always looked like this.
it was bittersweet how another woman was going to live that dream to the fullest, with the man of your dreams, at that.
thankfully, you weren’t left alone with your thoughts while you waited for the couple to come to the rented hall after they would get lawfully wedded. mitsuya and his sisters kept you company, making sure to recommend you everything they had tried at the enormous buffet.
“pretty sure they’re coming now,” mitsuya informed you as he stared at his wristwatch. you gulped and looked into your glass of soda.
oh what you wouldn’t have given to be in her shoes, taking on his last name… waking up next to him every single day, having his children.
you felt absolutely and utterly horrible. like all those years you’d spent away from this had caught up to you, leaving you to drown in your unrequited feelings.
before you could excuse yourself to the bathroom and ruin your perfectly done makeup by indulging in a five-minute breakdown, you were stopped by a hand finding your shoulder. it felt as if life was sucker-punching you in the gut once again.
“hey, baji.” your voice was low, and you didn’t notice mitsuya leading his sisters away from the table. his formerly wild, brown hair was much shorter now, tied up in a ponytail, and he wore a dark gray tuxedo.
when he opened his mouth, you shook your head. “i can’t take any teasing today. i mean it.”
your words weren’t even harsh, you just sounded exhausted. his grin disappeared, soon replaced by a frown. “i’m aware,” baji stated, “i couldn’t have attended if i was you.”
with a raised brow, you stared at him to explain what he meant. “i’ve known since back then.” you looked down, pursing your lips to stop them from trembling and giving it all away. you were asking to change the topic until the two would enter through the door and make your mood plummet entirely.
baji knew you better than you could have guessed. so this time, instead of poking fun at you, he actually tried to make you feel better
“by the way, i’m moving to osaka for med school for the next semester. i finally got in.”
it still stung when you saw draken and emma entering the hall hand-in-hand. you couldn’t compare that sting to any other kind of physical pain you’d endured in your life, it felt worse than broken limbs or a cut that needed to be stitched.
but he was happy, the way you never saw him be. he had never smiled as purely as he did when he danced with his wife, kissing the back of her hand that now adorned a ring to bind them to each other forever.
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ ♡•°`.
“i’m sending this letter even after it all. even though i know i’m too late. don’t get me wrong, i have deliberately not added your new address. you will never get this letter. this is just for myself, to liberate what i’d held onto for multiple years.”
you picked up the call after one shrill ring, holding your phone against your ear while your eyes were plastered on the tv. it was your episode today, dealing with your letter.
the show was muted so you could hear exactly what you’d hear on the phone. with a deep breath, you spoke first. “hello?”
“good evening, miss! we are very excited to be hosting you on today’s show for TO ALL THE MEN YOU’VE LOVED BEFORE!” on the screen, you saw the main host move her mouth with a smile plastered on her perfect face.
you sat down on your couch, taking another deep breath. “thank you for having me,” you responded, “i can already guess what you are going to ask me.”
you heard sweet laughter from the two hosts while you were busy picking at a dried scab on your thumb. this was making you more nervous than you’d wished it to.
“if that’s the case, then we would love to hear your thoughts,” spoke the co-host, “our audience is very excited to learn about your motives and what exactly has made you not put an address for the letter to be shipped to!”
the camera angle was switched to show multiple rows of people of all ages sitting and awaiting your response. it made your throat go dry.
“i have made this decision because,” you looked away from the screen, “they have found someone else. and they are very happy.”
the hosts showed faces of surprise. for a second, you wondered why you’d even done this to begin with. but it felt too relieving to speak about this for a bunch of strangers to listen. it felt too relieving to hang up now when you were so close to just letting things go.
“which was why i just wanted to send this letter to… get rid of it. to be able to live on and stop holding onto those feelings that are never going to be reciprocated.” you had no idea if the words you were saying made any sense to them, but to you, they did. they made perfect sense to you, and they described exactly how you felt.
“that is very mature, and we admire you for having collected the courage to take this step.” the host clapped her hands, obviously looking moved. “love isn’t all about having happy endings together, right? sometimes, it means to let go. for their, and for our own happiness.”
hanging up not long after, you sank back in your couch and chuckled to yourself. this wasn’t so bad. in fact, you haven’t felt as good as you did right now in a while.
when the door to your apartment unlocked, you watched a mop of brown hair appear in your peripheral. the smile on your face only went brighter.
“i’m home. did i miss it?”
“just did. let’s rewatch it together, kei.”
“i wouldn’t have it any other way, because it was thanks to you that i found my own happiness, too.”

꒰ ♡ ꒱ MITSUYA IS RESTLESS.
you wake up with a jolt, feeling the blanket wrapped over you get yanked away in one harsh, sudden motion. the thick duvet had been shielding you from the cold of the air conditioning, and as soon as it was gone, you were freezing. what the fuck—
startled, your head automatically jerks around to face the other side of the bed, and your bleary gaze focuses on mitsuya’s lean form, sitting up with his face in his hands. the blanket was crumpled up around him, pulled away from your body when he sat up.
it’s still early in the morning, you can see, because the sun coming through the window isn’t that strong. either that, or it’s a cloudy day — and either way, you’d wanted to sleep in with your boyfriend for as long as possible.
after all, you hadn’t booked a hotel room and taken him out on a mini vacation, and asked your parents to drive his little sisters to school for nothing.
mitsuya’d been working his ass off as of recent, and you were trying to give him the break he deserved. so when you found out that he’d convinced his mom to take a trip to the next city to visit her friend, you’d immediately made plans to allow mitsuya to relax as well.
you just wish he would make use of the opportunity and actually relax, though.
it takes you a moment to realize something is wrong, and when you do, you sit up immediately. “takashi? are you okay?”
he inhales, sucking in a breath of air through his fingers, and wipes his face. his gaze moves around the hotel room, as if he’s scanning his surroundings. then he turns to you, showing off sleepy, apologetic eyes. “yeah, ’m good. sorry for waking you up, baby.”
it doesn’t sound at all convincing, so you raise an eyebrow at him — waiting with more than a hint of impatience, for him to elaborate.
he laughs shortly at the gesture, waving a hand in dismissal and turning back around. the sunlight, dimmed further by the fancy curtains drawn across the window, falls on his pale hair as he tilts his head downwards. “just. panicked a little when i woke up. since it’s way past the time i drive luna and mana to class.”
“hm.” you blink. “but they’re staying with my mom and dad, remember? this week’s for us.”
“i … yeah.” mitsuya nods. “just forgot, for a second.” he still sounds off, and your brows crease with the concern for him that’s building up within your chest. scooting over so you were sitting next to him, you lean in and let your shoulders touch, and put a hand over his enclosed one. “what’s wrong, taka?”
he’s still for a moment, before he opens up his fist and curls his fingers around yours. he sighs, runs his other hand through his hair, and then meets your eyes again. “i’m just, not really used to it, you know?”
“having my responsibilites shared, i mean. i’ve been doing things on my own my whole life, so having someone around — having things easy, feels new.” he clears his throat, as if accomodating space for his words. “i’m fine, really. just had a moment.”
footsteps echo down the hall outside, other guests making their way around. you wait, because you have a feeling he’s not done yet. and you’re right, because he opens his mouth again.
“but i’m really glad, too. to have you around. it’s weird to share everything, and to have room to slow down and all. but i appreciate it. i appreciate you.” his grip on your hand tightens a little, and you let him hold it, moving closer to press a small kiss to his temple. “it’s okay, taka. i’m here for you.”
his eyes soften at that, so pretty and lavender, and he turns his face to press his forehead to yours. “i know. thank you.”
꒰ ♡ ꒱ DRAKEN IS OVERPROTECTIVE.
“hey,” your coworker hurries up to you, calling your name — and when you look up towards them, it’s the first time you lift your head up from your work in a while. you glance at the clock on the wall to see that it’s almost midnight, but it doesn’t really register in your head.
“yes?” you sit up, and they jerk a thumb back. “someone’s outside. they’re looking for you. i think it’s, um, your boyfriend.”
huh? you grab your phone from where it was half buried under a sheaf of papers, and when the screen lights up, you see seven missed calls and eleven texts — all from draken.
“is it a guy with his hair tied back, and a tattoo on the side of his head?” you get up, push your chair back and make your way down the hall towards the elevator. your coworker nods. “yeah, yeah that’s him.”
i’m sure i texted him to let him know i’ll be late tonight. you think as you step into the elevator and press the button that’ll take you to the ground floor. you’d got this job only recently, and you’ve been working extra hard so you could fit in and climb the ranks quickly.
draken was fully supportive, of course, but you’d noticed that he’s been a little … antsy, about the location of your workplace. he was always extra tense every time he dropped you off, or came to pick you up.
as soon as you step out of the elevator, you see draken in the hall, still in his D & D motors jacket. he's all disheveled, you notice, and tired.
he stops mid-pace when he sees you, roaming eyes stuttering to a pause, and he strides over.
“fuck, you’re here.” he lets out a deep breath, and now that he’s up close, you see the panic in his eyes and in the tense line of his mouth, in the way he walked. “why didn’t you answer my calls? you could’ve told me you’d be working late.”
“i did,” you begin, but he’s already asking his next question. “how many people are in there with you? you can’t stay here all alone. and you didn’t tell me—”
“ken,” you take his arm, pull him down to give him a peck on the cheek. the gesture calms him down a little - or at least you hope. “i did tell you. i sent you a message, and you literally read it.”
“what?” he retorts. “i didn’t see any messages. and i thought something happened to you, when you didn’t call me back.”
you unlock your phone, and swipe over to your shared chat. briefly going through the texts, you turn the phone around and show him the screen.
you: ken, i’ll be done at 12 tonight. pick me up then, k?
ken: hey. where are you?
he stares at the screen for a few seconds, before turning his face aside, looking decidedly embarrassed. “fuck’s sake.” he mutters under his breath.
“ken,” you say it softly. “you worry too much.”
he grimaces, looks around and then drops his head. “i’m trying, okay? but . . i don’t think too highly of this neighbourhood. and — and you know how i am.”
“i do,” you soothe, glad that the entryway is devoid of people, spare for the security guard sitting in the corner. “i understand. and i want you to keep in mind that i’ll be okay, hm?”
“it’s not safe here at night.” he says it firmly, but there’s a hint of hesitation anyway. “next time, call me if you’re staying late.”
“don’t worry.” you repeat, tracing his bicep with your thumb, still holding his arm. “i’ll call. and i’ll be fine, okay? and i promise, i’ll be here with you for as long as you want me to.”
“what does that mean?” he mutters, and then he pulls you in for a hug. you’re engulfed in his warmth, in his smell of motor oil and cologne - for a moment you’re surprised, because he doesn’t usually do things like this in places where people can see — but you manage to reciprocate, wrapping your arms around him tightly.
you don’t answer his question, because you know he knows what you mean. and he holds you in silence for a while, before he whispers, “i want you with me forever.”
꒰ ♡ ꒱ KAZUTORA IS SECRETIVE.
“you’re home late.” you remark from the sofa, when kazutora finally steps inside your shared home, way later than he usually does. the streets outside have gone quiet, and the news channels are playing reruns of old sports matches.
he doesn’t say anything until he’s slipped his keys back into his wallet and put his shoes away. as you observe him, you notice his hair is a little messier than usual, and that there’s a troubled tint to his golden eyes. as he passes the sofa, he bends down and takes your face between his finger and thumb and gives you a kiss. “got busy.”
you catch a whiff of something as he does it, and wrinkle your nose.
“what?” he blinks at you, and you take another sniff. “why d'you smell like cigarettes?” you wonder if his boss at the pet shop's taken up the habit of smoking. know kazutora doesn’t smoke. at least, not anymore. as far as you know.
he freezes for half a second, and you see panic flash in his eyes — but it’s gone in a blink. “nah. do i?” he sniffs at his shoulder. “smells like bird feed to me.”
“huh.” you shrug, doing your best to at remaining nonchalant as you take hold of his wrist, stopping him from pulling away. “okay, but the shop closes at like, six. where have you been?”
this time, the loss of composure is more evident. he purses up his lips, looking away so he doesn’t have to meet your eyes. kazutora isn’t a liar. he’s an honest person by nature — always speaking his mind and following through his words with actions — and when he doesn’t want to lie, he hides things.
so when he remains silent and doesn’t answer your question, you know he’s hiding something. loosening your grip on his wrist, you try to get him to look in your eyes. “you can tell me, you know?”
“yeah.” he responds a little too quickly, then swallows. “yeah. it’s not that important, though. never mind it.”
“don’t say that,” you try. “of course it’s important. it’s bothering you, isn’t it?”
he stands there, and you think he might’ve gotten lost in thought when his gaze flickers, glancing at you and quickly looking away. the room is dark, the light of the TV being the only source of illumination, but it’s enough for you to see the look on his face. he’s not really in the mood to talk about it.
“tora,” you hum. he doesn’t say anything, but you know he’s listening. “baby, you know i love you, right?”
he nods at that, fervent. “i love you, too.” you nod back. “then, you know that my feelings for you aren’t gonna disappear because of just anything, right?”
letting go of his wrist, you take his hand. “i love you, and i promise i’ll stick with you through whatever happens. nothing you tell me will change that, okay?”
kazutora’s eyes widen, the dull gold turning brighter as they catch more of the TV’s light — and you don’t know if what you said had a good effect on him or not, but you do mean what you said.
“m'kay.” he mumbles.
“good. now take a shower, and let’s go to sleep.” when you try to let go of his hand, he resists, and when you send him a questioning look, he tugs at your arm. “come take a shower with me?”
“sure.” you smile, and when you get up and move around the sofa to walk to the bathroom with him, he hooks his fingers around yours again.
“something might be coming up.” he offers something, probably thinking of satiating your curiousity. “but … i’m not sure yet. i’ll tell you about it as soon as i’m sure. okay?”
you nod, curling your fingers so yours and his are locked in place. the light from the TV fades away as you leave, but your heart feels light. and you hope his heart is light, too. “anything, tora. i’ll be here for you whenever you need me.”
“mm,” he says it simply, yet it’s full of feeling. “i love you.”
꒰ ♡ ꒱ HANMA IS UNENTHUSED.
you hope hanma doesn’t notice the way you’re nervously reading through the scratched poster you’d picked up off the floor of some gas station, when he’d stopped by for a refill with you behind him on his motorcycle.
the streetlight nearby crackles and flickers every now and then, and the sky is dark — you want to use the flashlight of your phone to help you understand the words better, but then he’d definitely see and inquire on what you’re doing, and you weren’t sure enough of your idea for that just yet.
taking another drag of his cigarette, hanma blows it out in a cloud of smoke, and clears his throat. you almost crumple up the paper by reflex, but you force yourself to stay still and slowly fold the thing away.
he still catches the action, though — and turns his attention onto you. “what’s that, huh, baby?” he grins at the way you pause with the poster half folded in your hands. “hidin’ something from me?”
“no,” you reply. “i just, um, thought this poster was interesting.”
“oh yeah?” he asks. “what is it? some carnival you want me to take you to?”
you’re fumbling to put together a reasonable, unsuspicious reply when he snatches the thing from your grasp, quick as lightning and so deft, you only realize it’s gone a second later. “hey!”
“let me see, let me see.” he chuckles, batting away your hands that came to grab it back, and shakes the poster open again.
he reads the words UNDERGROUND FIGHT CLUB and does a double take, before glancing at you, and despite your embarrassment your heart jumps to see a glimmer in his eyes.
“what’s this?” he muses, voice dipping into a teasing tone. “don’t tell me you’re into this kinda thing.”
you feel your face get hot — because truthfully, you’ve been trying to find hanma something to do. you’ve known him for a long time now, and you know he’s changed drastically from the way he was before, as a teenager.
where he was once unhinged, full of glee and adrenaline, always looking for a fight and brimming with self confidence, he’s now subdued and strangely quiet. of course, it never stopped your feelings for him from growing stronger and stronger by the day, but you thought maybe you could try and — and help him get back on his feet.
truthfully, though you’d gotten used to this more languid, downbeat version of hanma, you kind of missed seeing him full of that rampant spark he used to have. but it’s embarrassing to admit, and you’re not even sure how he’d react. “i don’t know, shuji. i just picked it up.”
“uh huh,” of course, he doesn’t take that. “what, you wanna watch me beat the shit out of some people, is that it?”
“you know that’s not it.” you complain, and he chuckles. “i just thought you’d maybe be interested. i-it does make good money, and you’re — well — into it, aren’t you?”
he skims through the poster again, and then slaps it down on the empty space remaining on the bench next to him. his arm snakes around your body, pulling you flush against him in one smooth jerk. “just might check it out, then. if it’s good money, then i can finally spoil you with shit like you deserve, hm?”
you roll your eyes, but the fact that he didn’t dismiss it remained warm in your chest. “i just want you to feel good again, shuji.”
“oh yeah?” he smirks. “you make me feel good just fine, baby.”
“think about it.” you huff, borderline offended. “i know you’ll do well. they’ll gladly let in kabukicho’s reaper, just for the fame. and it’s better than nothing.”
hanma laughs, nudging your face with his chin so he could land a kiss on your lips. “’m glad you like that side of me, baby. might just use the money to get you a ring.”
you kiss him back, hooking your arms around his neck - and because he almost never says something so romantically intimate, you know your efforts meant way more to him than he showed.

cw: angst. cigarette mention. reader is wearing makeup.
"we were good together once, weren't we?"
as he speaks, voice low and calmly demanding of your attention as usual, a wind seems to pick up and whistle between and around you, or perhaps it's just the rushing of blood in your ears that makes you feel simultaneously cold and hot. the chill is real however, and you tighten your jacket around you. you're turned slightly away from him as you sit on the curb just beside the side entrance of your walkup. you're not allowed to smoke here but he does anyway, always has, and a cigarette is lit in his right hand but he has yet to pull because he's speaking to you. perhaps lying to you even.
"no, we weren't."
your throat tightens as you say the false words out loud.
draken was good to you, despite everything. he loved you as best he could and you loved him.
you think that's true. what do you feel now? it's 3 am and you can't look up at the sky or look at the man standing beside you, back pressed against the brick because if you tilt your head back, tears will run down the sides of your face and if you look at him, they will multiply.
draken breathes through his nose, a sound whose sadness dampens its intended humor. from the corner of your eyes, you see him finally raise his hand to his lips and the puff of smoke reminds you of lazy nights spent in each other's arms or leaning against the balcony, the entire city getting a flash of your bare chests, draken's fingers in your hair as he tells you his dreams under the moonlight.
"i thought you were good for me," he says. it isn't an accusation but it feels like one. your clasped hands sit in your lap and you try not to fidget or shake for fear he might hold you. you still can't look at him.
"did you come all the way here to tell me that?" you ask. bitterness doesn't suit you, especially after all this time.
"what if i did?" draken asks.
"then you're an asshole," you reply.
to this, he sinks slowly into a squat. his presence next to you is never easy to ignore and the fact that you are trying is almost laughable if it weren't for the fact that your heart is heavy.
"i am."
more smoke.
you turn and glare at him, and the image of him blurs immediately behind your tear-filled eyes.
he lets you cry, knowing that he doesn't have the right to touch you or hold you or comfort you in any other way. not when he is the one who triggers all of these strong emotions.
not when he's the one who ruined things.
the cigarette is put out and eventually you stop crying. he watches you carefully and slowly, because you allow him to, his hand finds its way on the side of your cheek, thumb wiping away tears.
"should i go now? i'm ruining your memory of me again."
"you've done it before," you whisper. he smiles.
"thank you for coming out to see me."
you don't reply.
he kisses your forehead before leaving and his presence lingers.
somehow you know he'll be back and you won't be as strong then.

note: hey guys! happy new year ♥ here's my first angst for this year, 2023. hope you enjoy >< also this piece is inspired by the movies: the breakup playlist & the effect of a finger flick on a breakup
synopsis: that moment, it occurred to ken ryuguji that emptiness will be his companion for a very long time, so it seems, but it's fine. at the very least, you still gave him one last gift.
Tumblr media
Life wasn't always like thisㅡ when you have to constantly second guess your own intentions and be self-deprecating. Life wasn't always filled with the unknown where you have to keep your head low and walk on eggshells so you wouldn't overstep but because of Ken Ryuguji, your every waking day is filled with uncertainty and anxiety. Even after you moved cities, the memories still haunt you.
You swear you used to know him so well like the back of your hand, memorized him to the very core so it's really ironic how you're looking at him as if he was someone you've only met once: familiar yet empty and distant.
You can't see him anymore. Looking right through this unapologetic and hollow shell of a man that stood before you is like looking at yourself through a fragmented glass panel, reflective but damaged. You see yourself in him and it's so cruel because god damn, you want to resent him so much.
"Really, we broke up and that's fine. I have nothing against you." He shrugs so casually as if he is not seeing you crumble before himㅡ yet again. He looks too relaxed for you to be hurting this much just by hearing him speak his cursed poem of nonchalance and ignorance. It seems like he doesn't really care. Did he ever even care?
How did everything spiral down to this? Were you too complacent? Have you always been such a pushover? Do all these questions matter at this point?
You remember a time when his I love yous remind you of the tender moments with him, when the look in his eyes, as soon as they landed on you, was enough to placate you after a long day without him. Now they all mean nothing. He was your everything until it came to a point where the little things, small banters and meaningless quips turned into full-blown fights over who's right, who's in the wrong, who's the bigger person and who's better.
To this day, you still can't place a finger as to why that argument even came up. Not like you were ever in a rivalry with your own boyfriend. After all, a loving relationship is never supposed to be a competition but that wasn't how Draken saw it.
"I have… I needㅡ please, just cater me for a second." Your smile doesn't reach your eyes, sight starting to get blurry with the onslaught tears threatening to spill.
He doesn't say anything but the sound of his heavy sigh resounds in your ears so hauntingly but you push throughㅡ from all those years letting him overshadow your presence in what's supposed to be a two-way relationship, you think you deserve to be heard at least once. "I've been thinking… you know, I did love you."
"Are you trying to make me feel better? I told you, we're cool. You really don't have to." His words followed by a light chuckle manages to make your heart clench.
"No, I… I did, though I don't know when I stopped caring," you pause, clutching your bag placed on your lap before continuing, "Yesterday while I was unpacking, I found this." You used the opportunity to breathe as you dug through your bag to search for the item you found in your jewelry box. The anklet he had given you on your second anniversary is as pretty as ever when you hand it to him. "I just want to give that back."
Draken purses his lips and ends up pocketing the jewelry. He feels a little bad, seeing you so closed off again and looking small but this whole ordeal is a drag and pointless, he thinks. Why dwell on something that's already ended?
"Can I ask you something?" Your voice stops his train of thoughts as he trails his eyes towards your face before he nods. "Did you really love me?"
The question got him taken aback but he had seen this coming. He knew it'll be a question after everything that's happened. "I did."
He sees your momentary pause, the look of surprise on your face baffles him as he narrows his eyes at you. Did you expect him to say no? He wasn't that bad, right?
"Oh," was all you could muster to respond as you pondered over the remaining moments you were together.
"Were you expecting a different answer and for me to say no?" He didn't mean to sound accusing but the thought of you doubting his feelings hurt his pride.
"Can you blame me?"
"What are you implying?"
"Did you ever let me decide on dates? Have you ever asked me how my day went? You never even offered me your hand whenever we went out and it's so crowded." This time, your tears have practically cascaded down your cheeks as you ask him all the questions you've been bottling up. This was far from what you wanted to happen today. You promised to yourself not to open the wound you're trying so hard to heal but it happened before you could process it. As your voice raises in pitch, the more it wavers. It's pathetic but fuck it, you deserve at least this much.
"How is that important? You're so hung up on the littlest things." Draken argues back.
Little things, but wasn't it always the little things that matter? If he wouldn't listen because of that then you'll give him big enough reasons for him to hear you. "Have you approached me to apologize after an argument when you know you started it? Did you ever try to give something up for me? Whenever I wanted to see you, did you ever run to me?"
"Of course I didㅡ" "You did only because you wanted to have sex!"
That had him quiet in guilt, stiffening in his posture and lips going back to being pursed. So he really was that bad. No, maybe the term 'bad' doesn't even suffice to the amount of pain he's subjected you to.
"Above all things, what kind of boyfriend would envy the woman they love? Ken, I wasn't your rival, I was your girlfriend. Weren't we supposed to be happy for each other? If you really loved me you wouldn't see me that way."
Tumblr media
Draken has been quiet for a while now, not only tonight but has been for a couple of days. He's also been irritable so you try to do your best to show you're there for him but still keep a safe distance lest he needs his own space.
"Tora's new touch-ups on his bike were really cool, don't you think so?" You smile up at him, engaging his reaction but you're only met with silence and a frown as he hands you your helmet. The rest of his friends are still inside the restobar but your boyfriend insisted you guys leave first.
"Kenny?" This time, you touch his arm gently only for it to be shrugged off as he puts on his own helmet.
"You want to switch boyfriends since you think his bike looks cool? Go on then." His words were muffled but they were sharp and pointed that it digs through your heart. He's never one to be jealous, always the rational he is so you don't understand where this sudden idea came from.
You laugh, deciding to take his words lightly as you hop on the bike behind him, arms wrapped around his middle torso in a snuggle. "You know what I mean! I'm just happy for him since it took him years to have his dream bike."
"You're so happy for him, you're not even his friend." The rest of the drive, you remain in silence. His words stung but what he uttered next as soon as the both of you are in yourㅡ no, hisㅡ apartment (as what he have told you last week in an argument: the apartment is his because he bought it, you doing the house chores and paying half the utility bills is a responsibility as his "tenant") did it. He said them with so much conviction you're convinced you owe him everything that you haveㅡ that you are.
"I– I loved you!" Draken claims, his own voice starting to waver as the realization hits him little by little. By the tone of his voice, it sounded like he was convincing himself more than you.
"I introduced you to my friends, right? I got you people who tolerate you! Without me you'd be nothing. I just want a little respect! Do you know how hard it was for me to have your family's approval? They all think you're better than me. I worked for so many years to have at least a pinch of regards but you? You didn't even have to do anything to make my friends respect youㅡ hell, they respect you more than me! I love you so much but looking at you and being with you just reminds me of how I'll always be a failure."
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Certainly, he knows he did. He cherished you once upon a time but the pressure of constantly comparing himself to you got the best of him. For him, no matter what he does he's always met with a scorn by your family while you, even your bare minimum actions are rewarded by praise from his friends. Right from the start, he knew you were too good for him but that never fazed him. When it finally poisoned his mind, he got so scared of you thinking the same way and without seeing how his actions affected you, he pushed you away and started blaming you for what he's lacking.
"You're not supposed to hurt the one you love, Ken." You mutter, wiping the tears that wet your cheeks as you compose yourself. He doesn't say anything anymore but you can see his face scrunched upㅡ in hurt or confusion, you don't bother asking him as you take a step back. You've said what you needed him to hear, poured out the last bits of toxin tampering with your entire being and the root of all your insecurities.
This time, you will put yourself first above all things. You won't stop again for a person who's not willing to compromise and match their pace with you. "I hope this teaches us both something. Have a good life Draken."
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
"Man, you really need to get your shit together." Mikey's voice is muffled by the glass pressed against his lips as he takes a sip of his whiskey.
"What happened this time?" Mitsuya asks, eyeing the both of them over the kitchen counter.
After you left, Draken immediately called his closest friends for a drink. He feels so pathetic for feeling this wayㅡ for being hurt once you turned your back on him because he thought, after the official breakup that had happened a month ago, he would be okay. Why is he suddenly devastated when he knows he's not in any place to be?
"I'm such a horrible person." He says in a drawl, words slurring as he started drinking before his friends had even arrived in his apartment.
"Oh so you are aware." His blonde friend is about to add more insult but Mitsuya glares in his direction, wordlessly telling him to shut up.
"Why do you say that?" Mitsuya asks again.
"When you love someone you're supposed to make them happy. You'll do everything in your power so they wouldn't get hurt… but I–" He couldn't finish his words, getting choked up with the emotions flooding his system. "I fucked up so bad."
Both of his friends don't say anything, letting him speak his entire heart out. They've seen him put a barrier between you and himself and while they don't support the way he had treated you, it wasn't also their place to intervene. They could only offer so much because at the end of the day, the answer will always come from the both of you. So for the entire night, they stayed with Draken and listened to him ramble about how much of an asshole he is for hurting the only person who showed him genuine love.
The next morning, Draken woke up in his bed, throat dry and head spinning due to the hangover.  Last night was a blur, he can't even remember how much he drank and when his friends left his house. Feeling so weak, he almost didn't want to move but figured he'll feel much better after a shower and a glass of water. The anklet in his pocket is long forgotten as it fell on the floor and got kicked under his bed with no regard— much like how he had made you feel.
Tumblr media
"Are you sure about this?" Your cousin, Hinata, asks almost tearfully. She's holding your unoccupied hand as the other carries your duffle bag. Behind the both of you are Naoto and Takemichi, rolling your luggages across the tiled floors of the airport.
So much has happened over the course of one year and while you can't say you're entirely happy, you've made it past the horrible times of crying yourself to sleep or skipping meals— you did everything you could to divert the pain away from your heart. It took that much to start building yourself up and all over again, and now you're here, in the airport ready to leave the country and possibly the hurtful memories you have too.
"Of course. I'll still call you guys whenever I can so we won't miss out much on each other." You reassure Hinata with a grateful smile on your face once all of you have arrived in front of the airport's gates.
You look over at your younger cousin, flashing him another smile and a nod towards Takemichi, wordlessly thanking them. You couldn't be more grateful for the support they've given you after the heartbreak. They were at your beck and call— especially Hinata when you needed a pillar and a shoulder to cry on so to leave them after everything makes you sad.
"You're going to be late if you stay here longer." Naoto reminds you, helping arrange your luggages in a way that will be easier for you to carry.
You leave them after a round of hugs and tearful farewells and then you are off to another country, hopeful and confident that you'll find the very much longed for rest of your heart and mind.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Draken is… well, still an empty hollow man but unlike before when he liked to pretend he was fine just being him, he's doing terrible. His routine of beating himself up in the morning and drinking until the late hours of the night is a habit of his now, leaving Inui to manage the shop on his own. The man is too kind for his own good to even scold his business partner for neglecting his duties.
On some nights when he's really drunk, he cries and aches alone, calling out your name. He can barely even remember what it's like to long for you in sobriety as he drowns himself in liquor. He's eyeing the anklet he had given you again, he found it one morning when he stumbled on his own feet and kissed the floorboards of his room like a loser.
He tried to reach out a week after your confrontation but your cousins and even Takemichi kept blocking him out and any sort of contact he could get from you. He thinks he deserved that but the feeling of unfairness still eats at his heart and when it bleeds, the bitterness spreads. That's when he would turn to his only loyal companion now: alcohol.
"You need to stop doing this, Ken. You need help." Mitsuya tells him with his brows furrowed in concern.
"Stop fuckin' telling me whatta do, a'ight? I'll stop if she comes back!" Draken replies drunkenly, swinging the half-empty can of alcohol in his hand which only makes his friend sigh at the pathetic sight.
"Do you think she'll want to come back after seeing you in this state?" Mitsuya is indignant, snatching the can out of Draken's grasp only for the other to push him away defensively, almost knocking him back.
"You asshole! The hell's your problem?" Draken yells, fisting his shirt and glaring at him through unfocused eyes.
Mitsuya can only stare at his friend like he had grown two heads, befuddled and hurt. Draken has never been violent like this. "Ken, you're the one who has a problem."
His comment causes the taller man to go stiff and before they can even process what happened, Draken's fist connects to his cheek, leaving it bruised and sore. Despite the shock, he shoves the other back, aiming to punch him back but quickly stops himself in the process, seeing the empty look in his friend's eyes.
Mitsuya shakes his head as if to clear his own mind, heaving in adrenaline and anger. "Pull your head out of your ass and fix your shit. You're a fucking grown man so act like it." Without wasting another second, he storms out the apartment, shaking and anguished.
In a span of one year Ken Ryuuguji severs another relationship with his miscalculated judgment.
Tumblr media
"Oh my god! I missed you so much!" Hinata screams in excitement, hugging you as soon as she opens the front door to reveal you. It had been too long since you've seen each other and your cousin was over the moon when you told her you were coming home for her wedding.
Life in Canada was both fulfilling and sad at the same time. You constantly miss the familiarity and your life in Japan but getting to explore, meet new people and discover new things about yourself were enough motivation to keep you grounded. You enjoyed yourself and you're as happy as you can get.
"Hina, please don't jump around too much. It's bad for the baby." Takemichi scratches his head, eyeing his fiancée in worry as he helps you carry your things inside their house.
"Oh please, I'm not even halfway through the second trimester. Stop being a worry-wart." Hinata teases the man as she leads you to the living room where she sits you down beside her. "So what was it like in a foreign country? Did you meet a handsome man?" She wiggles her brows teasingly.
You chuckle at her antics. "No, Hina and I did great there, considering I was alone."
"Heeey! You're omitting out one big detail. What happened to Mr. Hot Cafe Owner?"
She's talking about the man you met in Canada. He lived in the same apartment as you did, you were next door neighbors and he helped you with unpacking, even offered you dinner that same night. You hit it off well, considering he's an intellect with a golden heart. It even helped that he was part Japanese so you were less lonely and had someone to bond over missing home.
"Ahh him. He had to move back here in Tokyo for work purposes. Long distance didn't really work for us so we broke it off after almost a year of dating. It's been five months since we've had any contact." You shrugged.
"That's a shame," she pouts, "Well you're here in Tokyo now… so why not give it a shot again? That's if he's still here and single?"
"Here are your drinks, ladies." Takemichi places a tray containing tall glasses of orange juice and you quickly grab the opportunity to ponder as you drink.
You're not gonna lie, Izana (Mr. Hot Cafe Owner's name), was a great guy but there's something still quite missing in your heart so it was a blessing in disguise when he broke up with you himself. You agreed with his decision, thinking it would be for the best because up until now, you can still see yourself as someone else's woman no matter how ridiculous that sounds.
"Well, anyway! The wedding is in two weeks so we have a lot to do but for now why don't you go and rest first? Honey, can you please bring her to her room? I'm feeling tired." Hinata yawns, her hand on her belly as Takemichi nods right after placing a kiss on her forehead.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Being back in Japan is overwhelming in a lot of ways but more than that, you're just relieved because after so long, you're finally home. Although quite tired still from the long trip, you can feel your nerves buzzing in excitement at the prospect of seeing what's changed here and what Japan has in store for you even if it's temporary.
Days pass by in a blur with your cousins taking you around the city and back to the places you used to frequent; most times though you're with the couple helping them with last minute wedding preparations so you're pretty occupied which you're grateful for. If you weren't, you would have just spent your days thinking about him and the what-ifs, and you don't want that to happen after the years he's been out of your life. For all you know he could be married and even have kids— if you notice your heart squeezing at the thought, you ignore it.
"Thank you so much for all your help. I bet it was stressful for you, huh?" Hinata is adorned with the prettiest stud earrings, her hair and make up done in a way that accentuates her soft beauty. She's looking at you through teary eyes and a pout.
You quickly rush by her side, a warm smile on your face as you dab a tissue under her eyes lightly. Her baby bump is even more prominent with the snug fit of her dress which makes her look even more ethereal in her wedding attire. "No, thank you for trusting me to help out."
"Is the bride ready?" The wedding coordinator asks from behind the ajar door, looking at you and Hinata.
You flash a grin towards your cousin's way before turning to the coordinator. "Yeah, she is."
As the wedding procession happens, you stay close to Hinata as her maid of honor. You're like a worker bee assisting the bride, making sure that everything is fine that you don't notice the presence of someone who still holds a part of your heart captive and a pair of heavy eyes watching you from the crowd.
"Why didn't you tell me she's here?" Draken hisses beside Mikey as they stand at the front as Takemichi's groomsmen along with the others.
"I honestly didn't know." The other shrugs in nonchalance, completely engrossed in the wedding and finding entertainment at how Takemichi keeps stuttering. "Even if she is here, so what? She's Hinata's cousin so it makes sense."
"Liar. If I had known—" Draken's murmur is interrupted by Mikey's low voice, "It's not that big of a deal, Ken-chin. Besides, haven't you moved on? You're dating someone else now anyway."
That made him quiet, lips pressed into a thin line before heaving out a defeated sigh.
Four long years it has been and you still look… the same. You still look like you but somehow you look radiant? No, you've always been shining but in the years of having you hide behind his shadow, he wasn't able to see just how bright you were— for him you're a sight for sore eyes, something only to behold from afar.
The entire time until the end of the wedding and at reception, he doesn't ever take his eyes off you. Whether you spotted him after gawking at you like an idiot for hours and ignored him or you simply just not noticed, he's glad because if you look in his way, he wouldn't know what to do with himself. He could kiss you, cry, curse at you— he really doesn't know.
"Draken, Yona just texted me asking why you're not returning her calls. She said she's been calling you." Mitsuya lets his taller friend know, gesturing for his phone currently facing down the table. He and Draken made up, Mitsuya forgiving the latter with no hesitance seeing as they go way back and after promising to take care of himself and seek therapy to help him.
"I turned off my cell." Is his lame excuse.
"You should at least text her, let her know what's going on." Chifuyu adds while halfway through his food.
Yona isn't his girlfriend per se, more of like a person to fill the absence of the person he's been longing for. Though he finds her kind of irritating, she's sweet and wants to be with him despite the constant rejection so he keeps her around.
Draken only nods his head before excusing himself to go call the girl outside the reception hall. He doesn't know why he's feeling annoyed that he has to let her know of his whereabouts like he's a child. When he was with you, you trusted him and never pestered him to update you as long as you knew where he was and he got home safe— where the hell is mind going?
"Baby! Why are you only calling me now? I even texted you multiple times!" He winces at the whiny voice on the other line before sighing.
"Sorry, I turned my phone off. Didn't want to come off rude to the newly weds," he words out off-handedly, eyes staring into the spacious garden area of the reception, "Anyway, what's up? Did something happen?"
"I just miss you, that's all." Yona whispers, he can hear the suggestive drawl in her tone which has him frowning.
"Really? You called me because of that?"
"You're so mean. Y'know, my ex boyfriends would've been running to see me the moment I—" Draken doesn't hear her meaningless taunts to make him jealous because as soon as your figure emerges from the double doors where he had come from as well, his heart starts hammering in his chest.
"Look, I'll call you back later." He drops the call without any hesitation as he mindlessly walks in your direction. There's really no thought in his mind, body working on autopilot when his eyes zero in on you. He's desperate when he opens his mouth to call for you but gets stopped by a strong grip placed on his shoulder.
"Don't." Naoto tells him, eyes dark in warning.
"I just need to—"
Your cousin frowns at him, clearly showing his distaste with no hesitation towards the latter. "Need what? To hurt her again? Don't you think she's had enough of you and your bullshit?"
The taller shrugs the hand off his shoulder, jaw slack and eyes narrowed back at Naoto as they share an intense glaring showdown but he refuses to back down. He just needs to hear your voice or even see you look his way… anything!
"Stay away from her, Ryuguji-san. If you have any respect left for her, you'll leave her alone." Then he's left alone outside the reception hall, gaping and frustrated at the abrupt exchange between him and Naoto. He knows it was a bad idea to approach you all of a sudden like nothing happened, like he didn't do anything wrong, like he hadn't broken you into pieces, but the sight of you just made his mind go blank. You completely erased his mind to emptiness and filled his heart full with so many emotions.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
You find yourself clutching your chest, locked up in the bathroom stall as you attempt to calm your heart down. You knew he was going to be there, his name written on the invitation and at first, it made you nervous but he's quickly removed from your thoughts with how busy you had been with your cousin's wedding. Right now though, you can barely contain it. You're surprised you managed throughout the wedding procession and made it to reception but now, you feel weak.
You're sure he knows you're here even though your name wasn't on the invitation, leaving it blank since they weren't sure if you'd be able to make it. He knows you're here but he acts like he's fine and you know he is— not even a bit fazed by your presence.
"Babe, you okay in there?" You hear Yuzuha's voice outside the stall.
"You've been here for 10 minutes. The couple's about to cut the cake." Emma notes though you don't miss the worry in her voice.
You breathe in and out, straightening your back and tucking the loose curls of your hair behind your ear before opening the door with a confident smile on your face. "I'm okay. Let's go?"
They both nod and then loop both of their arms through either one of yours, guiding you out of the comfort room.
The entirety of the event, you don't dare look Draken's way nor even attempt to share the same space with him when you find him too close for comfort. You have to stay away from him if you don't want the years you spent trying to get used to his absence to be meaningless.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
A week after the wedding, both Hinata and Takemichi are away for their honeymoon. You have at least a month or so left before you need to go back to Canada and you're growing restless with nothing to do. You can't bother Naoto since he's busy with his job and you feel hesitant to ask both Emma and Yuzuha out since you didn't talk much when you were in Canada. You don't want to bombard them with sudden invitations because of the gap that has grown between you three.
"Fuck it." You sigh, deciding to call the girls anyway for a night out. Fortunately, they both said yes and you're determined to get out of the lonely house in your silk bodycon dress. You're waiting outside of the house for Yuzuha to pick you up so she can drive you both to Senju's house, her girlfriend, for pre-shots while Emma is already waiting at Senju's place.
You clutch your purse and coat tighter when you see Yuzuha's 2007 Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead stop in front of you, a cheeky grin plastered on her face. "Get in, loser. We're going drinking!"
You laugh at her Mean Girls reference as you pull the door open to situate yourself on the passenger seat. Good thing that you have a coat with you, considering that she's driving with the roof of her convertible down, you're bound to get cold.
The conversation with Yuzuha managed to ease you down and relax until you arrived at Senju's. Emma is the first to greet you with a "Don't you look gorgeous!" She gushed as soon as she saw you, rushing towards you like she's not in her bedazzled 6-inch stiletto heels.
Behind her is Senju, chilling on the couch. "Hey!" She grins at you, presenting a bottle of booze in the air. "Ready for drinks?"
It's 9:30 after the girls decided it was finally time to get down to business and leave for the club. You, Emma and Senju are tipsy but still coherent enough while Yuzuha is completely sober, only drinking one or two shots so there's at least one responsible within your group. She's just hoping that none of you are rowdy when drunk.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
You're perspiring as you dance together with Emma, both of you swaying to the music with your arms around each other to fend off other people who might take it as an invitation when they see either of you dancing alone.
"I've forgotten what it's like to let loose after so long! I feel so free like this!" You shout beside Emma's ear so she can hear you.
Emma giggles, eyes slightly unfocused as she clutches your sides. "Good to know you're having fun though!"
You nod at her, beaming under the poor lighting of the club. Senju and Yuzuha are still at your table, watching you both as they drown in each other's presence. The both of you continued dancing for a while before Emma excused herself to the bathroom while you made a beeline towards the bar counter.
"Can I have water please?" You smile at the bartender after he nods at your request, quickly handing you a glass of cold water to cleanse your palette. "Thank you!"
The counter isn't that busy, only six of you are seated as everyone danced the night away so the bartender entertains you politely. "Are you having a fun night?"
Immediately, you bob your head yes. "Oh yeah. I'm with my girls so I'm definitely having a blast."
"That's great to hear. Sometimes I'd get the opposite answer so I'm relieved." He grins at you before eyeing the now empty glass in your hand. "So another glass of water or can I offer you something else?"
Before you can respond, a hand slides over the counter on your right, a card under its palm. The sudden voice makes you still in your seat, nerves buzzing as you turn to look at the stranger. "She'll have a red sangria."
The bartender raises a brow, skeptical before asking you, "Would you want that, Miss?"
Izana flashes you a boyish grin, his head tilted to the side and making his eyes twinkle as they trace your face in familiarity. He's waiting for your response, even cocking an eyebrow to urge you.
"Yeah, yeah that'd be nice." You hesitantly look back at the bartender to confirm your response with a slight nod of your head and a shaky smile. Without another word, the bartender works on your drink.
Your ex sits on the empty stool beside you, resting his head over his closed palm so he can admire you with a fond and cheeky smile present on his face. "How have you been? You're as pretty as ever."
Well shit.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
"Wait, you guys are here?" The loud voice sounds so indignant, making Senju and Yuzuha pull away from each other's lips, although quite hesitantly.
Squinting to be able to see more clearly, Senju frowns at the sight of his older brother and his friends gathered in front of their table. "Haru-nii, why are you here?"
"Can the both of you stop yelling?" Baji interrupts, pulling out a chair at the same table so he could sit, making Haruchiyo, Mikey, Draken, Mitsuya and Pah-chin to do the same. Their once empty and quiet table is now as rowdy (if not, more) as the other tables.
"You're just salty because your boyfriends left you out on their mini-vacation." Mikey snickers along with Haruchiyo and Pah-chin, annoying Baji at the mention of Chifuyu and Kazutora going on a cruise trip without him to punish him after forgetting to lock up the pet shop and almost losing two cats and three hamsters.
"Man, shut the hell up. I already apologized about it." Baji sounds so antagonized before downing an entire bottle of beer from the couple's bucket.
"Who're you with anyway?" This time, Draken asks as he looks around the club goers to spot any familiar faces and man, did he spot someone so intimately familiar. Is that really you with Mikey's fucking brother?
He doesn't hear Yuzuha's answer as he watches you giggle at whatever the silver head man just told you. He chuckles in disdain, scorning even more when Izana ruffles your hair and pinches your cheek as if you two were close. When did you even meet this guy?
"Why are all these people here?" Emma's voice stops his train of thoughts, she's looking at them with faux annoyance before plopping down on the seat next to her brother.
"Eh, I should be the one asking you that. You said you'd be at Shin-nii's place to help him with his date!" Mikey probes, flicking his sister on the forehead.
"Obviously I lied and you did too. You said you'd be with grandpa tonight!" The siblings continue to bicker while Draken remains mum in his seat, watching you and the nuisance beside you.
"Oh shit! Is that Izana?" Mitsuya asks, bewildered as he points towards your direction. "With—"
"Yeah, the four of us came here. I didn't know Izana-nii was back though…" Emma pouts. "He's even flirting with my friend! The jerk!"
"Should we call them over?" Pah-chin suggests.
Mitsuya and Mikey simultaneously look at Draken but the latter dismisses them. "Yeah, sure. Why not?"
Emma is a girl on a mission when she strides towards the unsuspecting figures of her victims. Placing a hand on your shoulder as well as Izana's, she leans between the both of you. "What is the meaning of this?"
You nearly jump out of your seat, if not for Emma holding you back with a cheeky grin. "You scared me!"
"Sorry!" She chirps before turning her attention towards the man beside her now, eyes squinted. "And you meanie! You didn't inform us you were back and then you're flirting with my girl?"
Her words seem to confuse you. She sounds very familiar with Izana so you look at the both of them in silence, watching their interaction.
Izana rubs the back of his neck with a sheepish grin. "Hey… little sis!"
Little sis?
Emma just clicks her tongue before wrapping her hands around your arm as well as Izana's and then tugging the both of you towards the table where the others are. You almost stumbled on your feet at the sight of Draken but relents anyway as Emma continued to drag you with her.
"Here they are! You sit with me Izana-nii, explain yourself!" Emma pushes you lightly towards the unoccupied seat which so happens to be near Draken.
Great. Just what you needed.
You clear your throat, easing the awkwardness out of your system and refusing to look to your right where he's situated. "Wait, how come you guys know Izana?" You ask, confusion still clearly written on your face.
Mikey groans, hitting the white haired man on the shoulder. "He's our brother. It's kind of a complicated story but yeah, we're siblings."
Isn't it so funny? The world's so small even the person you decided to date is somehow still connected to the person you're trying to forget. "Right, of course."
"The real question though is how you know each other?" Draken addresses, clearly showing interest but you don't dare turn his way or else you might just combust and freak out.
This time, both you and the man in question stare at each other for a moment before he clears his throat. "We uhh, we dated."
You can't see him but you definitely feel the ominous aura from the man behind you, for what reason, you're baffled but it's not like he cares, right? It's been years since you broke up.
"When was this?" Baji asks, completely intrigued.
"In Canada, we dated for a year at least." Izana clarifies with an easy shrug before sending a playful wink your way.
"Ew. Someone, pass me the sick bucket!" Mikey jokingly hurls while the rest laugh at his anticsㅡ except for Draken.
It's so pathetic how your attention is still on him despite the presence of your friends and your other past lover but the hold he had on you— still has on you is too strong for you to pretend that it's not there.
"Come with me." Says Draken, a tight hand around your arm as he pulls you up to stand.
"What?" You ask in bewilderment, eyes wide and mouth gaping. Everyone around the table stares at the both of you now, making you want to shrink.
"Ken—" You shake your head towards Mitsuya as you finally stand as well and let Draken lead you away from the table. You quickly turn your head, mouthing an I'll be okay before completely disappearing out of their sight.
"What was that about?" Izana asks, completely perturbed by just what happened, aiming to follow you but Mikey pulls him back down.
"She said she'll be okay. They'll come back later."
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
The both of you are outside in the parking lot, awkwardly standing in front of each other though both your eyes don't dare to meet, too afraid to see what they might imply. In the years you've dated one another, spoken words didn't amount to how your eyes communicate.
"Why did you bring me out here?" You finally decide to address him, uncomfortably shivering in the chilly night. In your haste, you didn't get to bring your coat with you. Damn Draken.
"I…" The words in his throat get stuck as soon as he sees you— actually sees you in front of him. The way you have to tilt your head upwards to look at his face, your pretty lips in a small pout and your eyebrows furrowed, god, he wants to see your smile as much as he wants to see you cry.
"If you dragged me out here to fight, please spare me. I came here to have fun." You murmur, voice soft and timid as if you're afraid that you'll offend him. The years you spent building your confidence seem nothing now that you're facing the person behind your self-destruction.
"That's not— fuck. I miss you!" His longing words come out more aggressive than he had intended it to but you make him lose himself in the emotions swarming him.
It feels like a bucket of water has been splashed all over you as you take in his words, time seemingly slowing down agonizingly the longer you stare at him. "I don't have time for this." Yet you remain rooted in your place. For some reason, the way he's looking at you like you have half of his heart makes you want to stay and listen to what he's going to say next— like a fool. You know you shouldn't give him another opportunity to break your walls down yet here you are.
"I long for you every single day. I see you in everything around me— I… I still love you. So damn much." There, he said it. The one thing you've been wanting to hear since your relationship bursted at its seams… yet it doesn't do anything to lift the heavy feeling lodged in your chest. The elevation you expected to swarm you doesn't come and it's so disappointing because once upon a time, you needed him to say that.
"Aren't you going to say anything?" Draken sounds so desperate and he knows it. He's almost ready to grovel at your feet if you so wish but he doesn't hear anything from you, it's like you're not there with him anymore. Absent, empty and void. He finds it so hard to breathe. "Please, say something. Say anything…please."
A heavy and shaky sigh is your response, biting at the quiver of your lower lip as if it would stop the impending hurt from overtaking. "If I say that I still do return your love, would it change anything? Answer me truthfully, Ken."
He's almost tempted to say yes but he knows the answer to that. He'd be fooling the both of you then because the remnants of what you had isn't really enough to fix what he's already destroyed.
You offer him a small smile but deep inside, you feel your insides twisting and your heart shrinking with what you're about to say. "We've grown older and apart, I'm sure you also had your own realizations as to what went wrong with us."
Draken nods his head in affirmation although his eyebrows are creased, finding it hard to read between the lines— is this acceptance or rejection?
"So I don't understand why you're saying all these things to me like you didn't learn anything from what happened," you purse your lips before adding, "I cherish what we had and I like how things are now. I choose to stay away from you because I don't want to keep putting all the blame on you. I don't want to end up hating you, Ken Ryuguji. Let's not do this."
He doesn't know what hurts more. The way you murmured his name with such tone, like there's a vast space between you— loud but meaningless because you're so far away or the fact that somehow, you still put him on a pedestal despite being an asshole to you. It's fucking with his mind and he wants to see the entire world burning with the lightmatch in his hand. After all, what's the world without you? What is he without you?
"Please keep your distance from me, Ken. I don't want to keep doing this. It's tiring." Such heavy words fall past your lips like they weigh nothing, but to Ken Ryuguji they were enough to break him. They were like knives piercing right through his very heart and as you take a step back and away from him, he doesn't follow you to ease the gaping hole it left in his chest as he watches you walk away again. This time, he's sure that you will never make the same mistake of turning back the wrong way— turning back to him because right there and then, he lets it happen. With a broken sob he's ever heard himself cry, he fully embraces the void as the last thing to remember you by. That moment, it occurred to him that emptiness will be his companion for a very long time, so it seems, but it's fine. At the very least, you still gave him one last gift.

Draken, your first love. Draken, the person who's been with you through every up and down, just like right now. Drakens comforting you while you cry your eyes out because you feel like you aren't enough to be with him.
It felt mpossible to get the words out of your mouth to even begin to explain what was wrong, you just wished draken could read your mind and understand how worthless you felt and how much you hate yourself in the moment.
It's not secret draken has dated some beautiful people, he was one of the prettiest boys you've ever seen and so were his ex's, when you looked at them your stomach knotted, heart dropped and all you could think was "look how pretty they are compared to you. How can you compete with that?" Granted this was only your mind saying these things but did draken think them too?
"I ju-just can't see why your with me! I'm nothing compared to your ex lovers, draken, I'm not prettier then Emma, I'm not as skinny like the others, not as athletic like them,, not as interesting like them... I'm not as good as them but you say you love me, choose to kiss me at night, you choose to stay with me draken." It all came pouring out before you could even stop crying, it felt so good to get it off your chest and finally tell draken how you felt but now that it was out, what if draken thought it was true and left you? What if.
"Y/N, please look at me." Draken whispered, arms slowly wrapping around your smaller frame, one hand gently pulling your head up to look at him, a small smile resting on his lips as he wiped away your tears holding back tears of his own. "Y/N I lose my breath everytime I look you, I get so fucking flustered around you. I dream of you every night I lay down, I will never get used to your beauty. You're my whole fucking world, i don't deserve you but here you are still with me, I never want to lose you. You are my entire reason for even waking up. You don't have to be prettier then emma, be as athletic or as skinny like my ex's to be the love of my life. I'll choose you in every life time we have, you're my baby. Please know I'll always love you Y/N, I may not say it or show it but I love you with every inch of my being"
Draken couldn't help but cry as his words came from his mouth, he's never told you how much he loved you, how much he loved holding you, kissing you. You were the most perfect thing to him. Draken couldn't imagine his life without you. "I'll never stop choosing you Y/N, I love you so much."

☰ Mikey:
Being married to Mikey was never easy but that's what made it worth it - Nothing beautiful comes easy after all. The first time you met Mikey was way back in your childhood, harboring a crush for him since the moment your eyes met for the first time and a stupid childhood crush turned into more eventually, the feeling mutual. Of course you knew about his dark episodes, but it didn’t bother you much, accepting this side to him as it wasn’t his fault. You were also one of the very few people who can help him snap out of it - but dark impulses or not, Mikey would never lay a hand on you, that’s what he promised. He would much rather cut his own hands off if that's what’s necessary to keep you close to him.
He adored the way you always took care of him, packing him some lunch here and there or simply letting him a bath in when he got home all exhausted. He never needed to say anything it was as if you knew already what was needed and he tried to give you back as much as he could in his own way. Lately however it started to irritate him. The reason was unknown to him but the stress from leading Bonten became too much and no amount of your love could fix this - quite the opposite actually, your love suffocated him.
Of course you got more loving the more stressed he got, trying to make his life easier with taking care of more and more things, even going as far as coming to his office to bring him his favorite lunch or to relieve him of stress in other ways and he usually never minded, even enjoying it when you sat on his lap during meetings. But this time it was different as you opened the door, entering with a timid smile when the men turned their attention to the door opened much to Mikey’s dismay. „What are you doing here?“ he asked annoyed, not even looking at you.
Taken aback by his cold behavior you sighed „I brough lunch for everyone“ you mumbled, your own voice betraying you. Ran started chuckling „aren’t you a sweet one, bringing your husband food like he’s a little child“ he joked, the room erupting in laughs and giggles. As you looked around the room, everyone was laughing or at least smiling - everyone but Mikey who stood up and made his way to where you were standing, holding onto your wrist harshly before dragging you towards the door but you stopped him. „Let go of me“ you spat, trying to free your wrist and he only tightened his hold. „Leave“ he growled, looking you dead in the eyes with no love to spare which made you nod out of fear. „I- i just thought we could spend some time together“ you whispered, feeling your lip starting to quiver which he ignored. Instead Mikey made his way over to the bag you sat onto the table, throwing your homemade food into the trashcan „why do you think I’m rarely home lately, hm? I don’t have the nerve to spend time with you or eat the shit you call food“ he said monotone, everyone falling silent as the scene unfolds in front of them.
It was embarrassing, the way he spoke to you like this in front of everyone and you felt a hot tear sliding down your cheek. „Why did you marry me if it’s so horrible?“ you asked, raising your voice in desperation and he walked over to you again, eyes empty. „I don’t know what I was thinking either. Leave“ he spat, pushing you towards the door but you refused to move, instead you took your ring off, letting it drop to the ground. This action woke him up and he stared at the round object on the floor „fine. Now you’re just another slut I fucked“ he mumbled, your sob that followed clearly irritating him.
All you could see was how his hand raised, connecting with your face in a harsh slap which echoed through the silent room „SHUT UP“ he screamed, not wanting to hear you cry but before he could realize what happened you were already out of the room, Sanzu running after you in utter shock. Mikey went into a fit of rage, throwing everyone out of the room before he completely trashed it - finally breaking down himself as he repeatedly slammed his head onto the floor. He hit you. The realization finally sunk in and he despised himself for it. How could he have done this to the only person who ever truly loved him? The only person that stuck around despite his flaws… you only meant well and he ruined it.

☰ Nahoya:
Before you even got together with the always smiling Kawata you were well aware that he’s a big flirt, relentlessly flirting his way into your heart every time you came to eat at their Restaurant. When you couldn’t take the back and forth flirting between the two of you anymore, you finally agreed on one single date with him just so he would stop… one date turned into many more, falling for the man behind the playful banter. The day you got together he promised, he even swore that he will be loyal, you own his heart and he doesn’t want anyone else because he has the best partner right at his side.
And he was loyal, that much can you say but he was still flirting with every living being. Sure you trusted him not to go further than simple flirting but it was l painful to witness, especially when this woman was all over him, going as far as running her hands over his abs, dangerously close to his crotch. You couldn’t even blame her, he was handsome after all but he made no effort to stop her wandering fingers, enjoying the attention even. When he whispered something in her ear which made her giggle you had enough, stormin off to the kitchen where a clueless Souya became the victim of your little anger fit, trying to reassure you that his brother would never cheat on you, but still it’s not okay that he didn’t stop her. Please don’t make him choose a side, he loves you both so much.
The rest of the day you avoided your boyfriend like the plague, having enough of his „harmless flirting“ since he didn’t even care about how it affected you. Only inside the walls of your home you looked for a conversation, not wanting to go to bed angry. „Hoya… we need to talk“ you mumbled softly, almost scared and his eye twitched ever so slightly at your tone. „If it’s about your little Tantrum, leave it. I don’t want to hear it“ he said serious, turning his attention back to the game he was currently playing. With a sigh you sat down next to him, wanting to rest your head on his shoulder but he shrugged you off, clearly upset with you which made you angry. „You have no right to be angry with me! She was touching you all over and you even enjoyed it instead of stopping her“ you raised your voice, frustrated by his childish behavior. You could see from the corner of his eyes that his smile slowly faded „can you stop being such a jealous bitch? It’s not like I fucked her or anything“ he raised his voice as well now, scaring you further but you had to stand your ground. His game was lost by now since his attention was on you now, waiting for you to cave in and agree or to say something, anything. „I know you didn’t but it hurts to see you like that. You’re my boyfriend and I love you after all“ you mumbled, voice barely above a whisper.
A chuckle escaped him „I can go to bed with whoever I please“ he said cold, annoyed by how clingy you were being and his words stung like a knife. Your head snapped up to look at him, face becoming emotionless „Fine. With everyone except for me. It’s over“ you said calmly but he mistook your calm behavior as an invitation to fight, his hand coming down on your cheek with so much force your whole head was throbbing.
Now it was his turn to be concerned, eyes wide open as his hand reached out for you, never quite touching you as you backed away from him, face full of betrayal as you nodded. „It’s over Nahoya Kawata“ you whispered as the tears started to fall, leaving his place as fast as you could and he let you leave, too shocked by his own actions… this was never supposed to happen, he was supposed to love you, touch you gently and instead he broke your heart and raised his hand.

☰ Draken:
Draken always treated you like a princess, supporting you in everything and protecting you from the less nice things in life. His hands would always cup your cheeks with utmost care, as if you would crumble and fall apart if he isn’t that gentle. He might be tall and intimidating to some but to you he was a teddy bear, a gentle giant, he was your Ken. You came into his life when he thought that he could never love again after losing Emma, only to show him that he can love you and still value what he had with Emma.
Perhaps it was the way that you understood what he was going through, not forcing him to anything, instead being a good friend and encouraging him that it’s okay to go out again and date other person - but the supportive friendship ended with a confession from his side, that he doesn’t want just anyone, he wants you. You, who told him it’s okay to still love the woman he lost, she was ripped away from him in a cruel way, knowing that he would still be with her now if that wouldn’t have been the case. You, who understood the pain the grief brought along or the way he still misses her, the way he refuses to let go of her memory.
Filling this void inside of his heart would never work and both of you knew it so you never tried to replace her, instead you encouraged him to not forget her and for that he loved you, you never had to try to be her to gain his love, he loved you simply because you were you.
However all relationships have their rough patches and so did yours when he tried to make you compete with his passed lover, letting you know that she was better in some things and when her name slipped from his lips during some intimate times you drew the line. You became distant right after the incident, leaving him clueless as he didn’t even realize what has happened.
„Emma would have talked to me“ he said frustrated as you avoided to even look at him and something in you snapped. „I can’t take it anymore Ken. Emma Emma Emma. That’s all you said for weeks! I know you loved her and that it’s not easy but you need to stop comparing me to her“ you raised your voice in desperation, hot tears threatening to spill but he wasn’t phased, too caught up in his own head to realize what he’s doing. „Apparently you don’t understand. Emma would have never talked to me this way!“ he raised his voice now too to match yours and you sighed.
„Ken. I am not Emma. I am a different person. Emma is dead so stop comparing me to her, SHE IS DEAD“ You didn’t intend to scream the last part but your frustration took the best of You. What you didn’t expect was to feel the palm of his usually so loving hand connecting to your cheek with a harsh slap, immediately taking a step back he looked at you and his hand in horror.
„Shit i- I didn’t mean to… fuck“ he whispered, shocked by his own actions and the way you were sobbing broke his heart but he couldn’t reach out for you, too scared you would flinch away from him in fear - he never meant to hurt you. „It’s okay Ken. I‘m sorry I wasn’t enough“ you sniffled and slid past him, needing to leave, unable to handle the fact that the man you loved so dearly, the man who put all the stars in the sky for you just hit you.

Draken x reader [part 2]
Angst
Tumblr media
It's been 2 years since draken last saw you.
When you stormed out of the store he quickly tried catching up to you but you were gone.
He tried calling you but you never answered.
And so he moved on. Weeks later after the incident he started going out with emma. They've been dating for about 2 years, and in those two years he never has felt any happier.
He felt happy with emma. He loves her so much that he would go crazy if he or anyone were to hurt her.
So why has he been feeling like something is missing?
Why has he been thinking about you from time to time during his relationship with emma?
He was pulled out of his thoughts when he felt emma tugged on his arm.
"Ken? Are you okay?"
"Mm yes I'm fine don't worry."
She hummed before cuddling up closer to him. He smiled and stroked her hair which caused her to slowly close her eyes.
"Good night Kenny."
"Good night emma."
He said before closing his eyes and soon falling asleep.
-
It was a busy week at d&d motors. The place was packed for the whole week and draken and inupi have been really busy.
It was finally the end of the day and they were starting to close up for the night.
" It's getting late, go home and get some rest. I'll take care of it from here." Draken said while putting away some supplies.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah I'll be fine from here." Inupi nodded before grabbing his things and leaving. Once he left, Draken continued on cleaning up and getting ready for closing.
While cleaning up he couldn't help but think about you.
He remembers when you would always stay behind to help him clean and close up the shop for the night.
He let out a sigh and got up to finish cleaning up.
-
"Oh your back!" Emma said before greeting him with a kiss.
"What are you doing up so late?" He asked curiously seeing his girlfriend awake at such a late hour of the night.
"I was waiting for you! Here I made you dinner so you better eat and rest up for the night." He smiled at her and gave a kiss to her forehead.
"You should go rest. I'll be with you in a bit."
"But-"
"No buts." She pouted but nodded her head and did as he said. He took a seat and started eating. Once he was done he cleaned up and went to his and emma shared bedroom.
When he entered he saw that emma was already fast asleep. He smiled before going to the bathroom and taking a quick shower.
Once he was done he soon joined her on their shared bed.
"Good night love.."
-
"Mitsuya!"
The boy looks up to see you running towards him with the biggest smile on your face.
He smiled seeing you and quickly prepared himself for your hug attacks.
You jumped in his arms and buried your face on his neck.
"How are you darling?"
"I'm fine. I heard you weren't going to be busy today so I was wondering if we could go out on a little date?"
He smiled at your request.
"Well my schedule is clear for the day..so what do you have planned?"
"A coffee date!"
It's been exactly 2 years since you broke up with draken. You were depressed for weeks. Not leaving your room or home. You spent hours crying day and night because of him.
But when his best friend Mitsuya found you crying one night at the park your life soon changed.
When you told him about what happened, he was pissed. He wanted to confront his friend about it but you begged him not to. He soon started looking after you.
He was there when you would break down every now and then. He would also feed you when you felt like not eating or getting up.
Having him by your side, you slowly started getting a little better. You stop crying every night and stop being in your room all day.
He was the one who helped you move on and forget about your ex and heartbreak.
And you started feeling like your old self again. And it was all thanks to Mitsuya.
When you finally started feeling better again you both hung out a lot. Which caused you both to get close and gain feelings for each other and then soon you both started dating.
And you felt like the luckiest girl ever to have someone as wonderful as mitsuya.
"Coffee date? I was also planning on taking you out on a coffee date."
"Great! Then let's go!"
He chuckled at your actions and let you drag him out of his home office. You both grabbed your things and went out the door.
"I'll pay today!"
"No."
The whole way to the cafe you and mitsuya have been bickering on who was going to pay.
"Fine I'll let you pay." He smiled and kissed your cheek.
You both entered the small shop and you went to look for a table while Mitsuya went off to order.
You found a table and sat down to wait for your boyfriend. He came back a few minutes later and you both chatted while waiting for your orders to be done.
"Hinata is getting married this month isn't she?"
"She is. I'm already done with her dress and tomorrow she'll stop by to try it on."
"That wonderful! Oh I can't wait to see her in it! Takemichi is one lucky man." He smiled at you while you continued talking about your friend's wedding.
He could tell you were excited about it which made his heart start racing.
He is not gonna lie, but Mitsuya has always been thinking about marrying you. What marriage would be like with you.
He could almost picture you walking down the aisle with a beautiful gown on and that beautiful smile that he fell in love with.
"Mitsuya? Are you listening?"
"Huh?"
You giggled at him and could see the small blush on his cheeks.
"Oh! Our orders ready."
He got up to get your guy's order. Once he came back you both started enjoying your food while talking about various things.
-
For the past few months, draken has been feeling a little bit off.
He started to not look forward to his little dates with emma. He doesn't feel the same butterflies in his stomach when she would kiss or compliment him. He won't get all blushy when she would twirl around to show off the new dress she just bought.
He didn't know why he was feeling like this.
Didn't he love emma?
And he swears he does!
He loves her so much that he would do anything for her.
But
He feels like he is slowly starting to fall out of love.
And he doesn't want to hurt her. She doesn't deserve the pain that will come when she finds out.
But the reason why he feels like this is still unknown.
He was confused. He has loved emma since middle school. She was his dream girl and the girl he has loved for the longest time.
So why was he feeling like this?
He let out a frustrated sigh and continued walking down the park's paths. He decided on going out for a walk to distract himself from his thoughts.
But then he noticed a familiar figure up ahead of him. He couldn't see who it was at first but when he started getting a little closer he could make out who it was.
His heart started racing when he saw who it was.
It was you.
You were sitting down on one of the benches while reading a book.
He hasn't seen you for 2 years so now that you were in front of him he didn't know how to act.
He was in deep thought that he didn't notice that he was walking towards you.
"Oh? Draken?"
He looked to see you staring at him.
"How have you been?" You asked with a small smile.
"Oh um I've been good..you?"
"I've been good to! So how are you and emma?"
He could feel his stomach turn when you asked.
"Good..we've been good."
"That's good to know."
Silence took over. You felt a little awkward but didn't want to seem rude and walk away.
"Um listen y/n..about what happened-"
"It's fine draken. It's been 2 years anyway so things have changed. I don't hate you okay?"
"I know but what I did was really shitty and-"
"If you're apologizing then I forgive you. It's in the past anyway and me and you both are much happier now."
He froze.
"Huh?"
"You're happy with emma and I'm happy with someone else."
He felt his heart break at your words.
You moved on?
"Oh..yeah"
You smiled at him and got up.
"Well I'm glad that we're both happy now. I hope we can still be friends like back then."
"Friends of course!"
No he doesn't want to be friends
"Oh! And one more thing!" You looked inside of your bag for something. He was confused until you gave him a small card.
"This is my wedding invitation! I hope you and emma can make it."
"Wedding?"
"Yes! My and Mitsuya's wedding!"
Mitsuya? His best friend?
"Oh I have to go now, but I hope you show up!" You said. You waved him goodbye before leaving. He stood there blankly staring at the wedding invitation and didn't notice the tear that slid down his cheeks.
That was the day draken realized that he was still in love with you.
-

USED FOR ANOTHER ONES LOVE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HELLOOO?! UHM...this is my first ever post on Tumblr. So yeah—I've never posted on Tumblr LIKE EVER!!! I do only post on wattpad but that's abt it :/. ANYWAYS this is draken angst lol ..ANYWAYS PLS REBLOG OR INTERACT WITH MY FIRST POST IN ANYWAY
WARNINGS: ANGST TO FLUFF??, DRAKEN BEING A DUMBO AND CHEATING ON Y/N, FEM PROUNOUNS, NOT PROOFREAD
-----------‐------
You and Draken had been dating for only 1 year and you had saw some weird red flags from him in the last months.
He hadn't been hanging out with you the last two months, he was always with Mikey, Mitsuya, Takemichi, or Pah-chin.
The only time you really saw him was when he came home after work. You would always stay up late at night just to welcome him home and cling on him, but he would just say 'not right now Y/n, I'm to tired. Sorry' but was he really sorry?
If he was sorry, he would at least sleep in the same bed at you....right? Well no, he would tell you to go sleep in the bed and he'd be right up—but he always ended up sleeping on the couch.
This happened for weeks— until one day you were walking in Shibuya, and saw it. You saw Draken kissing Emma. He was so happy looking. Hugging her from the side as she smiled at him, holding his hand as they walked through the people who crowded the streets of Shibuya.
Oh, so this is why he wasn't loving, caring, and sweet to you anymore. All the emotions he once shared with you, he was now sharing with her.
You had ran as fast as you could through crowds of people, you ran home. When you got home, you grabbed your bag and shoved your clothes, stuffed animals, braclets, rings, everything except the gifts Draken had gave to you.
You left those, no reason to have gifts from someone who never even loved you probably.
You had left now, Drakens house, and called a taxi.
When the taxi arrived you told them to drive you to your friends house that was sorta far away. Only on the other side of Shibuya, not far, but still far away from Draken.Arriving at your friends house, you had gotten out of the car and handed the taxi driver money before walking up to the door of the house and knocking.
The door opened very shortly after you knocked, your friend looked straight at your figure. "Y/n? Y/N!?" They said in shock of you showing up, since you two barley talk anymore. "Baji— I hate him—oh gosh—no I don't. I love him so much but he doesn't share the same feelings." You said to your bestfriend since birth.
Tears were falling so fast from you eyes, Baji was shocked that someone could cry so hard.
"What-? Come inside Y/n, tell me everything."Baji said and moved out of the way so you could come in.
You stepped inside, Baji shutted the door then put his hand on your back and leaded you to the couch. You sat down and started to burst into tears.
"What happened Y/n, why is a pretty girl like you crying so much?" Baji said making you smile a bit. You looked straight at him in the eyes and wiped your tears from you cheeks.
"He cheated on me" Those 4 words made Bajis face go in disgust, knowing damn well you were talking about Draken.
"With who?" He said. "A girl, a friend, a male, a coworker?"
"Emma"
"Just as I thought, I knew he was using you. He's a bastard he's so fucking lucky Mikey likes him or I'd have his head on a stick by now. I won't kill him but I sure will beat his ass" baji said making you shake your head.
"No—no!"you pleaded "don't hurt him. I wasn't good enough for him! I'm not as pretty as Emma—"
"Shut up Y/n" Baji said making you look at him shocked. "Please you think Emma's pretty? Hell she's just a face full of make-up, she's hella bossy, petty and she's a damn ass pick me. But your so fucking pretty! Your naturally beautiful Y/n! Don't tell yourself you aren't, any man would be lucky to have you as their girlfriend. Drakens just a pain in the ass."Baji had now hated Draken, they use to be bestfriend but now since Baji knew Draken cheated on you, he hates his living guts.
"Fuck him. You deserve better then him." Baji said. "Girl you are PERFECT. AMAZING. OUTSTANDING. BEAUTIFUL. DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!""You think?" You said to Baji and he just smirked."I DONT THINK I KNOW Y/N!"You hugged him and laughed.
You love baji so much, he's the best. He looks really mean but deep down he's a huge damn sweetheart.
"Thank you so much Baji"

Everything was acted wasn't it
Pairing: Draken x reader
Summary: You though your  2 years relationship was perfect but it same to be all fake, he used you but he really fall in love with you didn’t he ?
Warnings: Angst to fluff
Tumblr media
The sound of the cars on the street woke you up, normally that would make you upset but this morning was  different, when you turned to your left there was the best seen , your boyfriend of two years of relationship was there, laid next to you, the sun gave its light right in his naked back, the memory of the last night, the only feeling of thinking about it made you have a big smile and feel the butterflies on your stomach everything just like your first kiss.
You approached him and smelled his scent, it remembered to the first time you both met, it was like a dream, was like you two were made four each other.
-Am i that cute?- he asked opening his eyes with a big smile, it looked like he was remembering the memory of last night and it made you feel like the happiest person in the whole world.
He put his arms all around your body like he never wanted to let you go, his arms were big around your whole body , it felt so homely to be like this with him, he made you feel like you had someone to lean on, to trust in. And he felt exactly the same, with you he had found a purpose on his life, to protect you.
-I have to take a shower-  he said getting out of bed, showing to you one more time how good looking was his body and he in general.
That made your stomach feel the butterflies again and move your legs down and up just like a kid with a new toy.
-You are the cuttiest-  he said with a big smile, he turned his eyes towards you, then his head and finally his whole body.
He got close to you and gave you a passionate kiss
-I love you- you said without thinking.
-I love you more- he said with a big smile
This moment was like a dream, your whole life looked like a dream now, he looked like a dream.
You went down to make breakfast for both of you, exactly his favorite this morning you felt with lot of energy, you turned on the stove and started
It was almost ready so you got close to the shelf to take some plates and you feel some hands on your waist, they were cold but it felt real nice in your body.
-Im sorry , have to go now, Mikey needs me now- he said looking in your eyes, with all this time together by now you were able to read his eyes, and could read that he really wanted to expend the morning with you but probably Mikey really needs him.
-Its ok – you answered looking to the floor with a little smile really disappointment.
He knew that when you looked to the floor is because something really upsets you o disappoints you .
-So see you at night- you said looking into his eyes.
He smiled waiting the night to see you again, to find a way to make up for this.
-See you, love you – he said giving you a kiss.
-Love you too- you said with a goofy smile as he walked away and opened the door and closed it.
You stared to the door for second to wait if he would return and care more about you than he did for Mikey.
You served yourself the breakfast and then headed to the bathroom to take a shower
You were drying your hair and then listen a cellphone, a message, you check your cellphone and it wasn’t yours, it must have been Draken's, surely he had forgotten it when Mikey called , you went near to the bed, and there it was, apparaently it was a message from Mikey, it looked to be an address, you sat on the bed and carefully watched the conversation, and curiosity came to you, what would happen if you looked for your name in the conversation, it would be fun to see what your boyfriend thought  and said about you with his best friend, It would be invading his privacy but you would only look you’re your name nothing else, With a smile and nervous hands you looked for your name in the conversation, and you found the first message that had your name, with a smile you began to read it but little by little your smile faded.
-Y/n L/n
 (your age)
(Where are you from )
Why would Mikey have that information about you? And also it was before the incident that made  you and Draken met, you decided not to create ideas in your head about it and keep reading.
-Do me a favor and watch her, she is the daughter of one of the most important drug dealers in Tokyo, be nice to her no matter how irritable she is, you have to make her trust you.
The world stopped and you felt dizzy and disgusted, you did not understand what was happening or rather your heart did not want to understand it, it wanted to go back to the past and never read that message.
Your heart began to beat very hard and the tears did not take long to come out, everything made sense now everything had been a lie.
The anger and desperation began to take over you, everything had been a lie, the great magical night of yesterday had been acted out, everything you had lived with him had been acted out, when you dropped the cell phone the first thing you saw was the photo of you two in their first month together, he had taken you to a fair where he won a prize for you in the gun game, and when he gave it to you he said I love you for the first time, it was the most beautiful night in the world for you, well you thought so but now that you knew it was acting everything had changed.
Now everything made sense, the excuses he made for not spending more time with you saying that Mikey needed him, everything was to get away from you, it must have been difficult to pretend to be in love with someone you weren't, tell him I love you every day, sleep with them and bear them
With a big madness you threw the photo breaking it in pieces. And right next to it  there were all the gifts that he had given you for exactly 23rd anniversary, you took the scissors and cut each one but one was missing, you looked at your hand, the engagement ring, you smiled when you realized that he had taken the lie very far and you fooled for it, your mind told you to take it off but your heart pleaded that you leave it there, there must be another explanation for all that.
Now everything disgusted you, the room, the bed, everything you had shared with him .
The night came and the truth is that you did not want it to come if that mean that the end of everything had came too, you did not want to face the reality that the last two years of your life had been acted out by the person you loved most in the world, but you hoped that  the alcohol you had drunk minutes before would give you the strength to finish the things.
The door opened and he came behind it, he looked exhausted, probably of faking with you.
-Good night love- he said hectic taking off his shoes but without taking his eyes off you, he could smell that there was something wrong, you were looking to the floor again
You let out a wry laugh upon hearing the nickname.
- When were you going to tell me? - You looked at him hoping to find an answer to this ridiculous situation, but now it was impossible, you were scared that you would fool for him again.
-About what, Y/N I don't understand- he said touching his stomach and taking a seat next to you about to take your hands but you moved them away. It broke his heart to see you so distant.
The poor boy really didn't understand, he was hurt from the last fight and hoped to arrive to you and be cured, but it seemed to be a situation he had to fix
-Mikey asked you for a favor to come closer to me, right? – you said letting fall the first tears full of sadness and anger, you just wanted to push him so much to make him feel as hurt as you were.
-Y/N, I- he answered trying to formulate the words but he couldn't, his mind was trying to understand the situation, he was sweating, but you were not feeling hot.
-But what I don't understand is why did you wanted to get close to me?- you asked standing up from the chair, the simple fact of being close to him made you feel bad, used agin.
-Did you want to kill my father? Did you want to kill me? - you screamed
-NO, I would never hurt you- he answered standing up to be closer to you, and always felt but at that moment he didn't want you to go too far, he just wanted you to listen and believe him, he loves you he really does.
You knew something was wrong with him but didn't want to take importance on it.
-In this moment i cant believe you, I don’t even know if your name is real- you said touching your head.
-I opened myself to you in all possible ways as I had never done with anyone, and WHY? to be used- you said ironically the last part
-Y/N- he shouted, he really wanted to be heard -Was it fun?- You asked between tears.
He stood still trying to understand the question over and over again.
-I said that if it was funny every time you told me I love you and see how I believed it, to see how I told you my insecurities and you said that they were beautiful in your eyes- your head was hurting from crying so much you turned to the floor and raised your face you see him, he had tears in his eyes, you wanted to believe that they were real and that they were not staged but your mind told you not to do it so with a laugh you took the suitcases that you had already prepared and approached the door, but his hand took your hand stopping you from opening the door.
-I'm sorry- is all he could say while his tears came out, hoping that those simple ones would prevent you from leaving his house, his life, him, and that he would never see you again.

Still got pictures of friends on the wall
I suppose we aren’t really friends anymore
Maybe I shouldn’t ever have called that thing friendly at all
— Arctic Monkeys, The Ultracheese
“Have you had your first kiss?”
Draken thought he heard it wrong amidst the muffled chatter of patrons, the dulcet jazz-pop beat. He jutted his chin toward Inui, who sat across from him at their table for two, turning his head to the side so his ear faced him. “What was that?”
“Your first kiss,” Inui’s arm leaned on his chair’s backrest, and the other fiddled with his small cup. “Have you had it?”
Draken’s shoulders shook with good-natured laughter. “I’m twenty-seven years old. ’Course I’ve had my first kiss. Haven’t you?”
He thought it was unnatural for him to ask. They spoke about their co-owned shop, their mutual passion for bikes, their history as yankii. But first kisses, or any type of kiss for that matter, had never been a topic until tonight.
So he wondered.
“I have,” Inui’s eyes were low and fixed on the polished wooden table, as if considering. He looked up at Draken and said, “Remember Koko?”
“Oh,” was Draken’s surprised response, which was as good as a yes, “didn’t know you were like that.”
“We weren’t. It’s complicated.”
After he poured himself a cup, Draken poured one for Inui as well. “Wasn’t he your best friend?” he asked, eyes flicking to Inui as sake flowed into his tilted cup.
“He was,”
Their cups lifted and clinked. Inui downed his, and Draken paused midway due to a thought.
“I kissed my best friend, too,” he recalled glumly before he sipped. The drink was less cold, more unwelcoming.
Inui’s eyes grew once he set his cup down. “Mikey?”
Draken choked, almost spitting. “No,” his coughs were uncontrollable, “not Mikey,”
Inui snorted, “All right, who was it?”
Draken banged the center of his chest with a fist, forcing his throat to clear, then finally settling back. “My other best friend. She’s someone I knew longer than Mikey.”
“Did you like her?”
He thought about the crescent shape of her lips, her outspread hair on his pillow as she slept. Though he did not need to think to answer, “Yeah,”
“Did she like you?”
He thought about the light of her touch—how all things, even his own skin, glowed beneath her fingers. And he ached. “Yeah.”
“What happened?”
His eyes trailed over the table’s surface before he said, “I fucked it up.”
“Why?”
He looked up to find a pair of blue eyes hooded by heavy lids. They blinked slowly at him, and it was only then that he registered what was going on.
When you’ve had your eighth full cup of sake, you’re sure to be as flushed as Inui currently was. His cheeks were redder than the mark above his left eye.
And nothing but sappy love songs had been playing in the izakaya ever since they arrived. It’s a fatal combination.
Draken’s last and harshest realization was this: they were two single, lonely men of almost thirty, drinking together on a warm Friday night.
He believed there was a word for men like them. Pitiful.
He inspected the contents of the carafe and sighed at having none left. “We’re gonna need another bottle,”
He had lost count of how many more cups they drank. But wooziness, stretching his syllables, and seeing two Inuis surely meant too much.
Telling his entire tragic love story to his spaced-out friend also meant too much.
He doubted he got his message across with his slurred speech, his misplaced pauses, his wild gesticulations. But until he finished, Inui sat forward with his elbows on the table and his hands on his cheeks, nodding constantly as if he were a damn bobblehead.
The yearning for her was strong. Draken expected the alcohol to numb the hurt, but it seemed to only make it worse.
He rubbed his hot face with his palms. “I feel like shit now. Why’d you have to remind me? Why’d we have to drink this much?”
“I dunno,” Inui was nonchalant, carrying no guilt. Draken found it unfair. “I just missed Koko. Don’t you miss your girl?”
“Yeah, I just said so four minutes ago,”
Inui reached for the carafe and attempted to pour one more. Empty again. “Aw, dang,” he almost raised his hand when Draken pulled it down.
“That’s enough for tonight,”
Though he looked disappointed, Inui didn’t protest. “All right.”
Draken leaned back with his arms crossed over his chest. They were almost meditating, seated in silence, with the exception of Inui’s fingers drumming on the table. Then Inui seemed to think of something from the way his eyes grew.
“I could call him.”
And just then, Draken’s ringtone alerted them both. Draken reciprocated the wide eyes as he fumbled in his pocket. He squinted at the glowing screen, then he answered. “Mr. Masamichi?”
“I have news, Ken,”
“What’s up?”
“She’s here.”
He simultaneously felt his headache worsen and his mind clear. “Who?”
He was trying not to think it was her. Trying not to hope. He can’t have the privilege. It might be one of the runaway girls from the brothel.
Then he heard her name laced with Masamichi’s confusion. “Who else?”
He gawked at Inui. And Inui blinked in return, unable to help the thought that his friend looked like a fucking idiot.
Masamichi said, “She stopped by today. She was looking for you.”
“She . . . she was?”
“Well, she didn’t ask, but she didn’t have to. I knew she was looking for you anyway.” Masamichi chuckled. “And I told her where your shop is.”
He felt sick from nervousness. The alcohol was beginning to rise in his throat. He swallowed it. “Did she say she’d come?”
“She didn’t, but like I said, she didn’t have to.”
His breath came out uneasy. “All right,”
“You okay?”
“Yeah,” No, “I’m just surprised.”
“I’m sure you are,” Masamichi said. “Don’t go crying when you see her. She’ll think you’re less of a man.”
He managed to laugh. He could almost see Masamichi grinning at the other end. “I won’t,”
“And don’t let her get away again.”
He paused, letting himself hear the words. “Thanks, Mr. Masamichi.”
He slid his phone back into his pocket and took his wallet out in turn. “We gotta go,” he glanced at Inui as he rushed to pull a paper bill out.
“What’s up?”
“She came back,”
“What?” Inui’s spirit seemed to have awakened as well. “Holy shit,”
They split the bill and left, setting foot on the long strip of Dogenzaka, passing mannequins behind windows, family-owned restaurants, and the sound of like-minded people walking the vibrant street. It was midsummer, but goosebumps rose on Draken’s skin at the thought of seeing her again—she would no longer be a dream.
“Is this real?” Inui asked in place of him. They paced in spite of their tipsiness; they left their bikes at home, knowing they wouldn’t be of use if their drivers were under the influence.
“I think so,” Draken answered. His manner was calm, but he was feeling otherwise.
“What are you gonna say to her?”
He considered as they strode. “What I’ve always wanted to say to her,” he said, remembering the morning he learned she was gone. “I still . . .”
They stopped walking. Under the ghost light of a 24-hour convenience store sign, a person stood in their way.
He squinted, pulling his brows together to focus his drunken lens, then he paused.
It might have been the sign’s pale brightness shining on her like a spotlight. It might have been the deep-seated bias that took root in his being. It might have been both.
But at twenty-seven years old, she was glowing.
Beauty graced all her features—her face that had matured, her gaze that held him with sincerity. Don’t go crying when you see her. She’ll think you’re less of a man.
He was trying his best not to.
“Hi,” he wasn’t sure who said it first, but he saw her mouth part, and heard her honey-thick voice. He was rather rudely staring at her lips, remembering how they used to feel. Shit. I’m hammered—abso-fuckin’-lutely smashed.
His eyes moved to the bouquet of pink flowers in her arm. Inui cleared his throat, no less plastered than he was, but able to perceive. “I’ll see you later, Draken.”
His long golden hair swayed with his body as he sauntered back in the direction they came from. From his best attempts to walk straight, Draken thought he should be concerned about him. But besotted Inui was doing this for him, and he was grateful for that.
Draken turned to her again. “I missed you,”
The bouquet was in his hands. He stared at the pink blooms, sniffed them curiously, unsure how to go about them. Being on the receiving end felt unfitting. “I didn’t want to come empty-handed,” she said.
“Oh . . . thanks.”
Her laughter spurted from his reluctance, and it rattled him to hear it again. It’s been too long.
“They’re camellias. They have a significance,” she told him.
“What is it?” he asked. They came to a stop in front of D&D Motors, a street lamp serving as their sole source of light.
“It means ‘I miss you.’”
His key narrowly missed the hole and fell from his hand. He picked it up and tried again, succeeding this time, then he felt for the light switch once they were inside. When her eyes shimmered in the blinding fluorescent light, a cold wave tossed in his chest.
“I should be the one giving you flowers,” he gulped, “and a lot more.”
Her face was still, unperturbed. “You missed plenty of chances,”
It was a slap to the face, waking his senses.
“Not this time.” He made the bold move of grabbing her hand. “Come upstairs with me.”
Instinctively, his hand tightened around hers, fearing that she would slip from his grasp again. The next light he flicked on was in his bedroom. He walked in first, and she lagged behind.
“Nothing’s changed,” he said. The space was bigger, and his things were newer, but the layout was quite the same—he kept his wall of pictures, and his bedsheets kept their patterns.
And the space in his bed was kept helplessly for someone’s return.
He set his flowers down on the desk, and when he turned around, she was looking at the pictures adorned on the wall.
“You haven’t replaced a single one,” her finger ran across the pictures of them, approximately to the middle. One from their first day of school when they were six, and another from a photo booth she coaxed him to squeeze into when they were fifteen. Then her finger glided to another picture, turning her voice frigid. “Emma.”
Emma was as much a part of his youth as everyone else. He treasured her memory. He will always wish she wasn’t gone too soon.
But she was not his girl.
His girl was in front of him right now, wanting answers, like she used to when they were teens. And he was prepared to reassure her.
For the twelve years he spent without her, he was prepared to say that it was her the whole time. He spent half of those years formulating what to say to her upon her return, and the other half trying to accept that it may never happen. He had come to believe that there was no hope—until tonight.
“I keep it in her memory,” he said.
Her back was facing him. She turned her head just enough for him to see half of her face and know she was listening. “And why do you keep mine?”
“Because I still love you.”
Her silence tensed him, but he continued. “I fucked up that day. I should’ve chosen you.”
She turned back to his pictures. “It’s easy to say that in hindsight. But you were afraid. You were grieving. So you chose Emma. You chose Mikey. You chose Toman. You didn’t choose me.”
“I’m sorry,” He told her. “I hated every day after that. The last time we talked, that night I . . . I went up to your window and waited. I was gonna ask you to take me back. You didn’t answer. The next day I found out you were gone for good.”
His jaw clenched, and his eyes moved to her feet. “I paid the price for what I did. Toman disbanded, and Mikey became another person. I don’t know him anymore. The Mikey I knew and respected is gone. I swear I tried to move on from everything—I have the shop, and I’ve worked hard to keep it standing since. And I . . . I tried to be with other people. But I was always looking for something, somebody else. I looked for you.”
It was about time she said something, but her end was silent. “Will you look at me?” he said.
When she faced him, she was crying. She had been doing it so quietly that he hadn’t realized. He walked to her and pressed her close.
“You’re drunk,” she sniffled, “I—I can’t—I don’t know if I can believe you.”
Secretly, he was delighted to have her in his arms again. It was her rightful place.
“Then we’ll talk about it in the morning,” he brought her to his bed, laid her down tenderly, and climbed next to her. “You’ll see. I won’t change my mind. I’ll tell you the same thing.”
His head felt like a giant pulse, but he did not dare to rest until she was comforted, until her body and breathing eased.
He woke up in the small hours to the scent of her hair under his nose, splayed fingers across his back, and her shape molding into him.
A part of him expected her to be a ghost. She would be gone once he opened his eyes, and his yearning would overcome him like a tidal wave. But instead, with his drunken spell lifted, the clearer sight of her brought him relief, and her sleeping face was the image of home.
Nostalgia burned under his skin. He almost thought he was fifteen again and had dreamt of the past twelve years.
He stroked her hair, kissed the crown of her head, then carefully rose from her side. He’ll think in the shower.
His hair tie came off before he stepped into the glass enclosure. As water soaked his dark hair, he wept. He couldn’t hear himself crying over the buzz of the shower, and he couldn’t tell the difference between water and tears. All he thought about was that he had missed her dearly.
Forever was suddenly not as cruel as it seemed. Forever was weightless money, a currency he was going to spend on her many times over.
He will make up for lost time. He will be loud and uncharacteristic, yapping about her to his friends, his customers, his goddamn landlord. He wouldn’t mind being the most annoying man in the world if it also meant he would be the happiest.
He heard a knock at the door, killing his reverie. “Yeah?”
“Can I join you?” it was her voice asking.
He let a heartbeat pass in surprise. “Door’s unlocked,”
The door clicked, and when he turned to the glass panel, they met eyes. He looked away, down at the floor where droplets landed, up at the showerhead where they came from. But he could see her clothes drop to the floor from his peripheral.
He did not look as she approached. Even when she slid the glass door open and stepped in, he did not look behind him.
“I slept well. Do you remember what happened last night?” she said.
“I do,”
He moved aside, giving her way to the shower. He watched as water trickled down her bare back and her hair wilted.
“Do you remember what you said?” she asked.
“I do. And I told you, I won’t change my mind.”
She chuckled lightheartedly. “I believe you.”
She reached for one of the two shampoo bottles, the one left open. She used the soap on her body, and white suds flowed from her head to her feet and into the drain. She was copping his scent by the second.
“Why’d you leave without a word?” he asked.
“You left me first,”
Piercing as it was, it was true.
She looked over her shoulder, toward him. “I was supposed to come back,” she said. “I only left for Mom’s wedding. Then she wouldn’t let me go, saying I had no reason to go back. I didn’t tell her about you. I knew a boy wasn’t reason enough.” She laughed ruefully.
“If you were gonna come back, why didn’t you do it sooner?” he said. She was able to move overseas at will when she was fifteen—she could have done it again once she was independent.
She paused. “I thought she might be right. I thought there’d be nothing for me if I came back. What if you’d found someone? What if you’d still choose your gang over me? I wasn’t sure I’d like what I found if I sought you again. So I tried to move on like you. I tried to forget, only to learn that I couldn’t.” She faced him with a solemn look. “You’ve tried forgetting, haven’t you?”
“I have,” he said, meeting her gaze with equal sincerity. “I’ve looked at other people. I’ve met other people. None of ’em compared to you.”
She smiled, letting the words settle in her ears. “I’ve been there.”
Her back turned to him again. But he wanted her to keep looking at him, to meet his eyes and know he wasn’t finished.
Laying a hand on her shoulder, he gently reeled her to face him. Her wet eyelashes fluttered as he observed how water dappled her features and trickled down her neck. His hand moved to her chin.
Over the buzzing shower, he kissed her.
They sought the taste of one another, pressing parted mouths as if to say, Welcome home.
And they touched, carefully at first, his hands down her waist and hers up his cheeks. Then she shifted a bit closer, and her arms looped around his nape. As their stomachs pressed, he felt something akin to a flint igniting a spark—similar to his earlier intoxication, but better. Their mouths began to hasten, like they were in a rush to catch up with lost time.
He realized then that this wasn’t chaste.
He had learned what desire was like, and he had tried to incorporate love into it. None of his past efforts amounted to what he felt for her right now; it came so naturally that he had no need to try at all.
He shifted and pressed her back against the wall, eliciting a gasp from swollen lips. Wet skin rubbed against each other, and fervent kisses made hushed sounds.
They tore away, breathless and eye-to-eye, his thumbs caressing her waist. “Will you love me again?” he whispered over her lips.
She regarded him carefully. Then she moved one of his hands lower, past her hips. “I never stopped,” her breath warmed his face.
His heart, shriveled from years of hankering, finally bloomed.
He acted on her with devotion, and her eyelids soon fell heavy, wet fingers curling over his shoulders.
She breathed with tense lungs, graced his ears with little cries. Her body tightened, but her facial features were loose, hanging in front of him. He scrutinized this image of her for as long as he could withstand it. For as long as his skin wasn’t too hot and he could hold back from giving more.
And then the heat was too fiery, too much. He burned all over.
He lifted her legs off the watered floor and strained. He grunted with her sounds, muffled them with a collision of lips. Her fingers buried in the line of his middle back, and her body trembled as he wound her tight. Then she declared his name once more and fell at ease.
He followed in the mellowing, overcome with the sweet aftermath and a hint of tiredness. As their chests heaved, he guided her to meet the floor again.
“You okay?” he said.
“Yes,” she exhaled, leaning on his chest.
He rubbed her back soothingly and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “Let’s get out of here.”
They each had one towel. He wrapped his around his waist, then he turned to her while she enveloped her body in rough fabric. After she tucked the corner of her towel in place, she noticed he was looking.
He had a thought.
He scooped her up in a bridal carry, earning a squeak of surprise. She put her arm around his shoulders and laughed. “What’s this?”
“My way of celebrating,”
“I like it,” she grinned and pressed closer to him, kissing his neck.
When they got to the room, he laid her in bed and remained on top of her. They undid each other’s towels slowly, gazes only tearing away to marvel at bare skin before they would lock eyes again. Hers were bright and glinting as she tucked a piece of his hair behind his ear.
“I love you,” she said. “I love you madly.”
He was certain it was in his eyes and that she could see it—his vulnerability, solely for her. “I love you more,” he said back.
Their lips molded against each other, and the bed molded into their shape. They lasted as long as the rest of the sunless morning.
Her skin was warm under his lips. From her stomach, he crawled over to her face, and with her hands trailing up his shoulders, they finished with a soft kiss.
He rolled over to her side as they caught their breath. They pressed close to each other, and she pointed to his window. “The sun’s rising,”
He turned to see it: the pale blue sky with light orange bleeding from the bottom. And he looked at her again, thinking, Finally. We’re back.
“Got anything planned today?” he asked, stroking her hair.
She nestled closer, her nose poking his shoulder. “I’ll be moving into my apartment.”
“Where’s that?”
“In Shoto,”
“That’s near,” he shifted sideways, facing her.
“Mm-hmm. And it’s a little too big for one person.” She paused, averting her eyes from him. “Do you . . . happen to know any potential roommates?”
When she looked back at him, there was anticipation in her eyes. It made the corners of his lips twirl just the slightest bit.
“I know this guy,” he started, “but he sells bikes for a living. Might soil your stuff with grease.”
“Is he handsome?” she asked. “If he’s handsome, I can let it slide.”
He propped himself up on one arm, flexing his toned bicep. “You tell me,”
She studied him from head to torso, then she smiled. “I think he’s the sweetest man I know,”
“That doesn’t answer the question!”
Her wild cackle filled the room. “What can I say? He’s gorgeous. There’s no other person I’d want to share a place with.”
“Then it’s settled,”
As he leaned forward and kissed her, she cradled his face in her hands. His sorrow was discarded, taken light-years away, and with the abrupt shift of his world, he felt peace.
The sun will rise with the crescent shape of her lips, her outspread hair on his pillow. It will set with him basking in her light, her golden touch, her intimacy.
When they parted, her thumbs stroked his cheeks. “I’m home.”
He knew she was not talking about a place. Not a house, nor the city, nor the country. Homes tended to breathe, to have a beating heart—and hers reflected in her eyes, leaned lovingly into her fingertips.
He pulled her into his arms, where she rightfully belonged. And he whispered warmly, “Welcome home.”
Oh, the dawn won’t stop weighing a tonne
I’ve done some things that I shouldn’t have done
But I haven’t stopped loving you once
