Spider-man Villains and Hands

If you're paying attention you'll notice often times in Spiderverse that villains are far less expressive with their hands than the heroes. That is unless it's to attack.

Kingpin clicks his pen to relieve rage he's only barely controlling and in Peter Parker's death scene, the only time we see his hands is to kill him.

With Doc Ock, we see her doing a lot of excited gesturing with her hands (pushing up her glasses, studying Peter, etc.).

But after her reveal, it's her tentacles that does most of the talking.

Moving on to ATSV, when we first meet Spot, he's experimenting with his Spots with (you guesses it!) his hands and it's a lot of trial and error. It's also a lot of slap-stick comedy in his first fight with Miles managing to take him out briefly by making him punch himself in the face.

However as he becomes more confident with his powers, we see him use his hands less and less to the point he doesn't need to use a spot to teleport between dimensions. Instead of attacking them, Spot starts fighting by letting the heroes attack him.

And by the end of the film, his mere presence has become such a threat to Miles that all he has to do to invoke fear is stand still. This is why after his colour scheme has been completely inverted, he doesn't fight or do anything with his hands anymore and it's why our last focus on his hands is when he watches it completely turn from white to black.

When we first get a good look at Miguel, we get a close-up of his claws before panning up to his watch. Firstly this shows us how unlike the other Spider-people Miguel is. He has claws and wears a cape. Peter says in the first movie, "Spider-man doesn't wear capes." Then we see a better look at his watch which tells us this character isn't just scary and powerful, but is powerful in their access to other dimensions without having their cells decay - which by the end of the movie proves to be another problem for Miles. Immediately this shot warns us that Miguel is an unstoppable and dangerous person and the sirens in his leitmotif only emphasise that, even if the characters don't realise it yet.

Likewise with Fisk and Doc Ock in the previous Spiderverse installment, Miguel also doesn't have a lot of hand animations outside of fighting and we see this visual language in his meeting with Miles. Miles offers Miguel an empanadas and calls him 'Tio' ("uncle" in Spanish) as an offer of respect and solidarity, but Miguel's response is to grab the box and throws it aside before resuming his stance.

Here Miguel isn't just refusing Miles, he's also refusing the subliminal coding of a heroic character and I feel this has a lot to do with how our human brains work. The way we understand people and animals is by the way they mirror us. We like patterns and to draw parallels to ourselves. When someone is excited, we're excited. When someone's confused, we're confused. When someone's sad, we're sad. And so on. However when we're faced with something that doesn't react how we expect or reacts unpredictably, like Miguel throwing the empanadas back at Miles, it's sets off a warning in our brains. It's kind of like a predator hunting prey, which is the exact dynamic between Miles and Miguel by the end of the film.

However in Miles' mind, he has no idea why Miguel is being so antagonistic towards him. Even when Peter says, "He's always like this." Miguel remains stoic when Mayday is crawling around him and only moves to catch her and hand her back to Peter. Like with the empanadas, this is another example of Miguel's lack of ability to connect with the people in his environment other than through aggression and violence. It's why Miles calls out, "You have claws? Are you sure your Spider-man?" Because Spider-man is defined by his ability to connect with people - hero or villain.

Then we get to another clawed antagonist who hunts Miles for the duration of the first Spiderverse's runtime. Much like Miguel, Prowler's movement is mostly unstoppable aggression. That is until he learns Miles is Spider-man. Aside from presenting as Aaron Davis, Prowler is most identifiable by his giant claws and the camera makes sure of it.

It's only when Aaron learns who Miles is does he take off a claw to hold his hand in his final moments. Unlike Miguel, the claws are not exclusively attached to his suit - they are removable and thus Aaron is able to connect with the people in his environment outside of his identity as the Prowler.

Which finally leads us to our other Prowler, who likewise is able to put on and take off the claws. But where am I going with this?

I feel like in this scene the lighting and colour grading is doing the most work in making Prowler intimidating. Because unlike Aaron's Prowler, Miles' Prowler design is very casual for a villain. Which works for the character but without the claws and the mask, Miles looks just as scrawny as his Spider-man counter-part. It's almost too casual without those key identifiers. Which is why I think we're going to see a lot of Miles' Prowler without the claws and interacting with his family in the next film, as well as dealing with his own identity. Like Aaron in the first film and unlike Miguel in the second, we're going to see how Prowler connects with his environments beyond serving as a antagonistic foil to Miles.

⤷ His favorite way to cuddle in bed is you laying back and him resting his head on your stomach while his arms wrap around you.

⤷ He especially likes it when he's resting his head on your stomach and you mess with his hair. He melts against you.

⤷ "Y're so soft.." He'd mutter as he rests against you and makes himself comfortable. Then the second your fingers run through his hair he lets out a pleased sigh, "Y're gonna make me fall asleep." He'd chuckle out, letting his eyes close.

❥ He likes to hug you from behind when you're standing so his hands can rest on your stomach.

❥ If you start to feel self conscious about your chub, he would absolutely start praising you relentlessly, trying to make you smile or laugh at how persistent he is.

❥ Loves to carry you around and make you feel light. Especially when you start laughing in his arms, he melts at that.

⤷ "You look beautiful t'me, darlin'. Absolutely beautiful. Wouldn't change a damn thing about ya, especially not your body. Y're soft and I love that, 'feels nice under my hands. I promise, y're breathtakin' t'me. Always have been." The minute he sees you smile he noticeably relaxes, "There we go. You feelin' better now?" And when you nod he'd rest his head against yours and pull you close, "Good. Can't have my puddin' thinkin' she's ugly or anythin' of th'sort."

❥ Absolutely gets defensive as hell if anyone insults you. That goes for insults about anything but he gets especially ticked when anyone mentions your body type in a negative manner. Probably punched someone over it once.

⤷ You'd look at him in shock after he punched the poor soul who dared to insult your form. He'd then look at you and his expression would immediately soften as he went, "What? I didn't hurt 'em that bad." He broke the person's nose by accident.

(these are hcs, not actual canon so these are things that are made up and NOT based off the comics)

hc him as 19 yrs old.

joined the spider society because he thought he maybe could do some good by helping others, only to regret it later. genuinely thinks Miguel is kinda a facist.

he also doesn’t regret joining the society because he got to spend time with Ham, Gwen, Peni, Hobie etc.

he and hobie bonded over similar views, became best friends for the last four ish months before Noir quit.

taught hobie how to pickpocket/steal things in different places/shops before he quit. especially shops in Noirs dimension where it was easier to put something in your pocket and leave without anybody noticing.

Miguel hates him, probably because Noir rivals him in size and also questions the way Miguel runs things around the spider society.

(Miguel is canonically 6’9 and i hc Noir as around 6’5)

Miguel once asked (very rudely) in front of hobie, if Noir only dated Hobie because he was similar to Robbie. You can only IMAGINE what Noir almost did (aka assassinate Miguel) before he was stopped by most spider people who are loyal to Miguel. Basically, Noir went even more crazy because of that since Miguel uses Robbie as a way to get to him.

Noir in fact didn’t want to date anyone because of some stuff that happened, but when he met Hobie and got to know him, he instantly fell in love.

Miguel simply hates Noir, but can’t fire him or kick him out for no reason so Miguel picks on him until he snaps.

he acts like Peni’s older brother, being protective of her. she became depressed after he quit the spider society because she really cared about him.

most likely smokes, Peni hates it and always takes his cigarette from him to put it out. has dumped water on him multiple times. Hobie also puts out Noirs cigarette when he sees him smoking.

humor is his coping mechanism, example (my interpretation of the scenes):

when miles said his uncle was the prowler, Noir responded with “this is a pretty hardcore origin story” which sounds like he’s trying to make the situation a bit lighter by joking a bit.

as well as when aunt may asked if they could fight doc ock outside, he replied with “We don’t pick the ballroom, we just dance”

another one: when he, peni and ham met gwen, miles and peter for the first time, peter asked noir how they got there and he answered with “it’s a long story” only to say right after “maybe not that long”

(I INTERPRET THIS AS HUMOR FIGHT ME)

Hobie paints Noirs nails from time to time because it seems to relax him.

used to wear glasses because he had such bad eyes but now that he sees better because of the whole spider thing, he wears them cuz they’re cool.

One thing I only realized in hindsight that I think is really striking is because...of course. Of course, Miles would never buy into Miguel and the Spider Society's "Canon" philosophy. Not just because he wouldn't want to stand by and just let horrible things happen to people, especially people he knows and loves...

But because the challenge Canon represents is one he's beaten once already.

The conceit of Canon events is essentially a trolley problem. There are two tracks: one set with one person tied to them and one set with several. Someone will die no matter what, but if the trolley is rerouted to the track with only one person on it, then fewer will die. Right? Likewise, if a Police Captain dies, the multiverse is saved.

But in Into The Spiderverse, the same problem is presented to Miles and the visiting Spider-People.

The Spider-People needed to use the collider to go home, or they would all keep glitching until their bodies disintegrated. But, they needed someone to stay behind and shut down the collider after, or it would threaten their various universes and beyond. In other words, one Spider had to strand themselves in Miles' universe to save everyone and everything else. Peter B. reveals to Miles before they set off that it's himself, even though they both know it's a death sentence.

All by themselves, there's nothing else the multi-versal migrants could've done. They had to get as many people out as possible, and they also had to stop the collider. No one could shut down the collider and escape succumbing to glitches.

Except for Miles.

After they leave him, Miles gets the reassurance, love, and support from his father that he'd been needing. This sets off his apotheosis, allows him to join the rest of the Spiders, and be the one to stay while they all go home. And since Miles is from the universe in question, as long as he can beat Kingpin, all the Spiders are safe, the collider gets shut down, and no one has to die.

While the confrontation at the collider isn't, as far as we know, a Canon event, it does present the same challenge: saving both the multiverse and the one person who seemingly has to die to save it.

In other words, Miles already beat this trolley problem once in ITSV. Miles wouldn't buy into the Society's idea that you not only can't fight fate, you must actively enable it, because...

Because he's not only fought fate once before, he's won.

And I believe he can do it again.

Interactions I wanna see in BTSV:

Hobie and Noir obvi, they are the two spiders who are fighting not just villains of the week but also fascists regimes and a hateful/oppressive world/ideology and are regularly in kill or be killed situations.

Peter B. And Miguel talking about what exactly happened to RIPMiguel’s world.

More about what’s going on with Jessica, she didn’t really get an intro, we don’t even know what world she’s from and who her husband/partner is. I also wanna see what exactly her relationship is with Miguel and what her role is in the society.

Peni and Noir, obvi. Two people who have been through horrific things since the last time they saw each other.

Margo and Peni, two tech baddies that were thrust into high stakes situations too young.

Hobie and Rio/Jeff, it’d b rlly funny. Ik a lot of people want them to hit it off but b real. They didn’t even like Ganke at first. They think Gwen is emo. They aren’t ready for Hobie, that’s not even getting into the cop thing.

I want Gwen and Peter B. (And Peni) to apologize Separately to Miles.(one’s an adult one’s a kid what they did isn’t comparable) and let Miles say his Peace(he doesn’t have to forgive them).

In the same vein I want Pav to confront Hobie and Gwen and be like ‘did you know Gayatri and her dad were supposed to die?’

Gwen should also talk more about what being the only Gwen that lived is like(I hope we get more Gwens)

I want Gwen to tell Miles(at the right time)about what she’s been going through, cause he doesn’t even know she was technically homeless.

I want them all to meet Miles 42 and for him to join the fight and for them to help him out afterwards.

Pav, Peni, and Porker I think would make a hilarious trio

Lego Spiderman, Miguel, and Porker. It would b so funny pls.

Pavitr and Noir are both technically supernatural little creatures. I think this should be discussed.

Give Me One Good Reason Why I Shouldn’t Punch Your Face In: Spider-Verse Edition

Miles Morales: My mom specifically instructed me to have a good day.

Peter B. Parker: You’ll be late to supper.

Gwen Stacy: I am so underdressed.

Pavitr Prabhakar: I’m going to see the Liberty Bell for the first time later today, and I want everything to be perfect.

Hobie Brown: I took the oath to never get punched.

Peter Porker: When you move in to punch me, I’m going to hold a bucket up in front of my face, and then your fist will just punch the inside of an empty bucket and you’ll look ridiculous.

Peter Parker (Noir): The scheduled walloping time isn't for another half hour.

Peni Parker: Wounding me emotionally would pay much higher dividends.

Miguel O'Hara: My face is filled with boiling hot water that will shoot out everywhere if you hit me.

Jess Drew: Your fist is so pristine.

Ben Reilly: It would be way too rewarding.

Peter Parker (Earth-199999): I lost all my loved ones and I am now alone.

Peter Parker (Earth-96283): I'll be late for supper.

Peter Parker (Earth-120703): I'd rather just do it myself.

The Spot: When you move in to punch me, I’m going to hold a spot up in front of my face, and then your fist will just punch the inside of a portal that will redirect to your face and you’ll look ridiculous. How's that for a villain of the week, mhm?
