I know you love her. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be with her. But since you’re only a human being with variable emotions, you might be inclined to love her in all the wrong ways. Scripts & C#

Most of the mechanics in ‘Glow’ are controlled/called by C# script written by myself, with the help of a couple tutorials. Coding is arguably my least favourite part of making games simply because I don’t understand it however as I was developing this game I was reviewing code I had used previously and learning how to do new things entirely I started to understand a lot more about its basics in how it works. 

As mentioned in the previous post the dialogue was a huge part of this game and drives the direction of most of this story. To create this dialogue within a scene I created a script which simply enabled a canvas upon a collision with an object. This meant that when you reach a certain point the dialogue would appear. It also enabled me to enter different lines in without changing the TMP objects individually which made it a lot quicker as I could have a prefab for the dialogue and reproduce it quickly. This collision method is also similar to that used in the script to go to the next scene, instead of the collision triggering the dialogue, it would trigger the scene manager to load the next scene in the build order. This meant that I could reuse on script for all scenes as it was always going to load the ‘next scene’ rather than a specific one. It was also used for the death trap script which basically repositioned the player to a respawn location when colliding with any obstacle etc.

In some examples I did need to load specific scenes such as the choice at the climax of the game. I created a script called ‘TheChoice’ which set two options for a button that would either load scene 12 which was one option or scene 8 which was the other option and lead onto 9 10 and 11. This was similar to that of the main menu and controls menu as the play game button always had to load the first scene in the story while the other button had to either take you specifically to the main menu or the controls menu so again using the scene manager I specified their scene index to be loaded. 

The other important scripts of course were those that enabled the player to control the player. These enabled the character to accept player input while the character motor enabled me to determine the physics of this main character, i.e. how fast they moved and how high they jumped. Also with the player moving it required the camera to move. Initially I achieved this by making the camera a child of the character prefab however this causes issues elsewhere while also resulting in some pretty harsh camera movement so adding a script which smoothed this movement and also allowed the camera to specify which game object it follows made a much more natural and smooth look to the camera movement. 

Adding coroutines to some of these scripts is probably the thing I learned most, it was the toughest challenge however added little details which put the finishing touches on the game. Adding a coroutine to ‘TheChoice’ script allowed me to add a delay to the scene loader enabling an animation to be triggered by the same button and creating a transition which made the ending seamless and far more aesthetically pleasing. These little details achieved by C# make the final product the coherent storytelling it needs to be. Another example which I hadn't considered until the end was adding music where writing a script allowed me to have the music play continuously throughout.
