Watched the new-ish Dr Dolittle while I was sick with Flu and I liked it, it was ok. However, I was really disappointed they didn’t subvert the dead wife trope and have her be alive. I don’t know a lot about the books or Eddie Murphy films, and whether that’s integral to the plot, but it was just very bland. They kept going on about how Lily was the best adventurer, better than him, she had all these amazing skills. So it makes you think wow surely someone this smart and skilful would have found a way out of the shipwreck and over to the magical island(THAT ONLY SHE KNEW THE WAY TOO). I really believed they were gonna find her alive on that island and then when they abruptly cut back to Queen Victoria it was like, ohhh so she actually did get fridged . It just stopped it from being a great film. Yes, it’s about moving on from grief etc, but ya know, I’ve seen that story before and it would have been nice for the wife not to be dead for once.

good things of the movie: its only barely an hour and half. its good to know this punishment could have been longer but it wasn't 🖤. now that all good things were said as i finish it watching without a single ounce of satisfaction in any sort of way, as all actions were made to be futile, and leatherface is true to the concept of some guy without thought, i ask myself: was this movie necessary? then i realize, this director must have been dying to say slurs on screen, and specially with a dash of fatphobia and patriotism boot licking, who could deny him such pleasures?

Is Doctor Dolittle the most enduring franchise where no one really cares about any installment. The best take on the original is that's an intermittently charming movie that's way too long, and it was a industry-destroying bomb that's never been seriously reclaimed. The only successful one is a mostly forgotten Eddie Murphy comedy with three direct-to-video sequels. Nobody ever saw the Robert Downey Jr one (though it did end up in the top ten that year by default, thanks to coming out in January 2020)

You could make a real case that each Dolittle is perfectly emblematic of bad studio movies of its era. The tediously long and gigantic roadshow epic of the 60s; the lowest-common-denominator family comedy of the 90s; the hyper-expensive remake dumped into theaters of the 20s. There's got to be another one at some point and it, too, will be bad
