Trying to figure out how they'd work as puppets

For those that don't know, typically the three most common variants of foam puppet are know as rod hand, live hand, and walk around. Examples would be Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Big Bird respectively. Rod hands are smaller in size and held up by, well, rods. Live hands have the puppeteer (or two!) insert their hand in a sleeve connected to the puppet for more interaction. Walk around puppets are full costumes the puppeteer wears, but what makes them puppets and not like, fursuits, is that there is still puppet mechanisms like moving the mouth or blinking.

Poppy is a pretty standard walk-around puppet (she's just Big Bird), but I'm having trouble understanding how a human could fit into Barnaby or Howdy. Then again, 2d artwork of puppets tend to take liberties for the sake of stylization. So if someone were to make them IRL they'd either look really different or utilize tech I don't think was available in the early 70's

Howdy's legs could work on Squidward Spongebob Musical logic. Arms I have no clue, as a live hand he could have multiple people filling up those arms, but as a walk around idk cheap spider costume logic were the lower arms are attached to the upper arms ala a string?

I do not know what to make of Sally needing extra help to hold up other than that's so specific it might become a plot point

Frank.

Okay Frank lacking details or having weird details that stand out is a running theme for him. He has no listed backstory whereas everyone else can say where there were from and who their family is. Every character's first name ends with a long "e" sound whereas Frank is. Frank. (His last name "Frankly" does cover that though). The fact that WHRP lacks any concrete detail on his creation is a story reason, what's the story no clue we are 5% in dudes

Regarding his puppet, he obviously had a fixed frown because puppet but also could spin his head. Now I have absolutely zero clue how you can have the head spin and also have room for the hand for the mouth, unless this is a rod puppet (Rizzo the Rat) where the mouth is moved by some other mechanism. All I can say is I'd suspect Frank to have a very stiff (read: not majority foam) head and body in order to hold up such a feature. If his head can detach, I can imagine a metal ring of sorts that his collar covers up

His arms are a different story. The website not clarifying how his arms work doesn't really mean there is anything particular about them, but I am going to over analyze is anyway dammit

Points for rod hand: arms/hands are slim, inspirations Bert and Mr.Robinson are rod hands, lack of other rod hands/variety reasons

Points for live hand: Sally also has slim hands but is live hand, not all live hands have thick arms (looks at how small Ernie's upper arms are compared to his fore arms), Beaker hasn't been listed as an exact inspiration for Frank but look at him, and most importantly is Poppy. Poppy is noteworthy for being the only walk around puppet without a live hand counter part. As a result of having wings for hands the puppeteer cannot realistically perform any of the baking tasks in her segment. As a result she gets help from Sally, Howdy, Eddie, and Frank. The former 3 are all live hands, and one can assume that because of this Frank could be a live hand as well

And finally I know he's said to not super expressive but my heart says that he would look great with the eyebrow mechanism Bert and other puppets have.

I should point out that puppets from the 90's (Dinosaurs and TMNT come to mind) used more robotics in order to achieve more expression with the characters, but I don't think that kind of tech was common place in the 70's and would apply here.

The big take away is that this post was made for practical reasons; I am just Quite Fond of researching this kind of thing. This will probably not get you any lore, but it could provide context for the characters. I personally suspect that Poppy not being able to fly or perform tasks she swore she could will play a big of her character. In general I think that what other puppets can and cannot accomplish will play into the theme of figuring out who you are. That's the real fun.

Ok so I guess this is a weird question, but what do you think about wally and dick being in a relationship? would it be healthy? would it last long? all those types of questions. I've been getting into dc recently, and I've been starting to realize alot of people ship those two, admittedly I can see why, I'm starting to like them too. Pretty sure I saw someone call them every Dick Grayson/Wally West stan "required phase", it would be a life if I said I didn't snort at that. But I've been curious if they would even work out, with their plans for their lives being so different, clashing with each other

In fact I think that if Dick and Wally ever got into a canonical relationship, they would never ever break up which would be a massive problem for DC because DC needs their IT boy Dick Grayson to be shipped with as many people as possible. lol.

No but really the reason they're so great together is because Wally really, really cares about Dick's mental health. He's canonically made it his mission to make sure Dick is happy and safe and he loves his best friend so much. Dick has grown up with wally since they were tiny kids and he knows every detail of Wally's life and loves him. The Flash Plus comic is just the two of them being best buddies.

So considering the amount of love and care Wally and Dick have for each other. In Titans (2016) Wally literally writes a love letter to Dick. (they call it a friendship letter but c'mon who're they tryna fool.)

Do you know what Wally does? He literally turns back time in order to prevent Dick from dying. Wally is retiring because he has a heart condition. He can't run. He can't be the flash anymore.

I genuinely don't think it's possible for Dick to have a healthier relationship with anyone than he does with Wally. They're like cotton candy, white snow, salsa mix love. The purest, softest, fluffiest romance with a whirlpool of fun and excitement.

Something Wally mourns a lot in the comics is his loss of contact with Dick.

The reason they don't talk as much is because Wally is busy with Linda and Dick can't just third wheel a marriage. I mean he sort of already does but anymore than now and he would be living with them. Permanently.

I think the only issue they would have is the different cities. Neither of them would be willing to move because Wally loves Central City and Dick loves Bludhaven. However they would still be able to maintain a long distance relationship easily because even as friends they go on annual vacations, just the two of them, simply to hang out with each other. Also the occasional drop ins.

The only time Dick and Wally have fought is when Dick is refusing self-care and Wally is so mad at him for neglecting his mental health. But even then it's more of a - fine. I'm leaving you alone for now until you get your stuff together. I know you can do it. - type thing. They would definitely work out despite the separate cities thing because Wally has unconditional trust and love for Dick and Dick loves Wally .just as much.

Besides, living in two cities is no problem for a speedster

Chapter 3: Stuck

It’s been a couple of days since you’ve been kidnapped by Wally Darling, and ever since you’ve gotten full control of your new body a few days ago you’ve been trying to escape, or knock him out to try and escape. But every attempt seemed to be thwarted, either by a floorboard suddenly becoming loose, your legs becoming wobbly again somehow, windows you tried to open and escape from slammed shut on their own, or Wally somehow catching you leading you to be in his bone-crushing hold again. And each time it lead to you either being near him in the house the rest of the day or being stuck in that bed again with him staring at you with those black voids… You’ve tried everything to get out of this house out of his reach and grasp but nothing worked absolutely nothing worked… even today your pitiful escape attempt failed as you were now sitting in his lap while he sat on the couch, with his head resting on your shoulder arms around your waist as he stared at you from the corner of his eyes.

“My darling why do you keep trying to escape?” He spoke as he buried his head in your neck, even though you could no longer throw up you still felt the feeling of bile coming up to your mouth as he did the affectionate gesture which made you feel less than loved… “Cause I want to go home…” You spoke in a frightened whisper, his hold on you tightened after you said that. “But you are home… you are safe with me in home… there is no need to be so scared and skittish.” he said his voice showing some anger, you were about to speak again but he beat you to it. “I have shown you nothing but kindness and love and yet you're still so scared there's no need to be… Just be happy and show me that adoring smile…” He spoke so softly so sweetly, yet anger was present in his voice which you could tell was growing, was he… Was he Losing his patience with you? “I just want to see that adoring smile of yours again but these past few days you’ve denied me it, and I’m starting to get really annoyed… what do I have to do to see that smile again?” he said his grip getting tighter, what the fuck was wrong with him why did he think you would be all sunshine and rainbows after he kidnapped you and taken you away from everything and everyone you loved…

Words were caught in your throat you didn’t know what to say, who knew such a cute puppet could be so… Deranged, you could feel his stare at you like every other time. You didn’t know what to do. You didn’t know if you could smile in this new form or if your overwhelming fear would even let you but you didn’t want to know if you angered him any more than you already have… You just sat still in his lap as he held you, his anger practically radiating off of him…. You felt one of his arms come off of your waist and his hand tightly gripping your chin, forcing you to turn your head towards his face, where you saw his black eyes that looked like empty voids of pure anger. It was like staring into an abyss, eyes filled with empty nothingness that seemed to hold only endless anger; it was frightening, to say the least. “I have been patient and kind but every day you try to escape and every day I see you get more frightened and it’s getting harder to not get completely angry and not use the other options.” He spoke voice filled with rage, what did he mean by ‘other options’?

That question was never answered as he still forced you to stare into his eyes, your eyes filled with tears as you got more frightened every second he stared at you, your breathing became quick and you were starting to panic. You were scared… He stared into your eyes for a few more seconds before letting go of your face and allowing you to turn your head away from him as tears started to run down your face your breath heavy and quick as you tried to calm yourself down. “But Frank did say that you would be scared in a new environment after being taken away from one they were used to, of course I had to ask him why you were still so scared in a non-conspicuous way!” He said his voice back to being happy and smooth, but you could hear the anger lingering in his voice. You shook in his arms still trying to calm down, he picked you up and placed you down on the couch, his eyes still empty voids of anger. “I have to go again be good and don’t escape or I might resort to the other options… I love you darling” He said as blew a kiss goodbye to you before leaving the house, as soon as he did you got up and walked back to the room where you almost always were. You walked into it slowly closing the door behind you, when you reached the bed you sat down, and when you did your breath quickened again and tears began to pour out of your eyes as you broke down sobbing.

Your lungs felt suffocated as you breathed quickly, your body shook with every sob that came out of your mouth. Tears streamed down your felt cheeks staining them. [how did this happen? WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? What did I ever do to deserve this?] You thought as you continued to break down in fear, panic, and sadness. You wanted out, you wanted away from that sick puppet that was tormenting you. What did he mean by ‘other options’? That thought rang in your head as an echo. What did he have planned what other options did he have in mind to make you behave? Was he gonna chain you to this room? To this bed? Was he gonna cut off your stuffed limbs so that you stayed put and couldn’t move without his help? Was he gonna lock you into a dark room till you submitted and stopped fighting? What the fuck were the other options, you frankly didn’t want to know cause the thought of whatever he had planned scared you to where you felt like vomiting… You couldn’t stop panicking and so you tried to wrap your arms around yourself, but as soon as you did it reminded you of his tight grasp so you just opted to grab at your hair as you broke down. Curling up into a ball you tried to calm yourself down, not wanting him to come home to see you like this and get angrier. It took hours for you to just calm down cause everything in the house and about it reminded you of him, him and his abyssal eyes, and his deceiving smile.

How could such an adorable puppet be so cruel and evil? You laid back on your bed tired after the panic attack you just had, tears still rained down your face but not as much as before… You wanted home you wanted this nightmare to end, you grabbed a pillow and hugged it cuddling around it imagining it was someone you trusted and loved. You closed your eyes, clinging to the pillow as you drifted off to sleep wanting nothing more than to go back home. Away from him… You wanted home…

Wally walked to the woods, he had seen your breakdown unknown to your knowledge he was mad to say the least but like Frank said ‘pets take some time to get used to a new environment after they been taken away from everything they’ve ever known’. Of course Wally didn’t see you as a pet but like he said he had to ask in a non-conspicuous way, Wally saw you more as his boyfriend and his future husband and already had the wedding day imagined perfectly in his head to every last detail. From the suits, you two would wear to where exactly the venue would be, yes some... Would say this was obsessive behavior and a far reach from the current state of mind you had, but he knew one day you would fall for him and his charms and you would show him that adoring smile he fell in love with at first sight.

Wally was willing to do anything to see that smile and for you to stop trying to escape him, he had plans for if you continued this game but it seemed for now you had come to realize you can’t escape from him or escape out of Home. Speaking about one of his best friends, Home was so helpful with keeping you inside and making sure you didn’t escape. He was glad that his best friend was helping him with you, Wally couldn’t wait for you to finally calm down and become happy cause he really wanted to show you to his friends, so that his vision of your wedding could happen with all his friends. He got so lost in the thought of you and you finally being happy that he didn’t see his friends Until his other best friend Barnaby grabbed his collar. “Whoa, there buddy is your head in the clouds or something?” The tall blue dog puppet spoke as it picked up Wally by the back of his collar, Wally flushed up realizing he completely ignored his friends by accident. You see Wally had planned a picnic with his friends today, and that's why he had to leave the house. “Oh sorry Barnaby my head was lost in the clouds!” He chuckled embarrassed as Barnaby placed him down and walked back to where the others were.

Wally saw his other friends Frank, Eddie, Poppy, and Julie all talking and laughing until they saw Wally and Barnaby to which they all said hello and waved at them, Wally waved back with a smile on his face. “Sorry I didn’t realize I passed you guys my head was stuck in the clouds!” He said apologetically. “It’s okay Wally! What were you thinking about?” Julie asked excitedly her voice filled with enthusiasm, Wally thought about what to say exactly since he didn’t want to give away your existence but he also wanted to tell his friends about you and how beautiful and handsome you were. “Well, I was just thinking about… Uh, a new painting!” He said smiling, everyone seemed really interested since they all loved his paintings and drawings. “Really what were you thinking about painting?” Asked Eddie.“You know an apple maybe a butterfly maybe both!” Wally said smiling, glad they weren’t taking suspicion in him. “What about your new pet you asked me about yesterday?” Frank said, Wally slightly tensed he was glad he asked Frank but also regretted it cause he knew Frank would do this… Hopefully, the Butterfly loving person didn’t question any more than he should… “yeah I should! That’s a good idea!” Wally said so he didn’t draw any suspicion, it seemed as if everyone was confused… Wally has a pet? “You have a pet what type? It is a dog, a cat, or a fish?” asked Poppy, Wally realized his mistake about bringing up a pet… now he had to think of what type of pet he would have. “Oh uhm… It’s a… It’s a dog!” He said smiling happily, Julie and Barnaby seemed to be ecstatic about it asking many questions about the fake animal which wally answered and kept the information he made up about it stored in his head so he could make the painting he told them he was planning to make. Though Wally was now getting suspicious of Frank cause Frank seemed like he didn’t truly believe Wally, Wally brushed it off for now knowing Frank wouldn’t dig any deeper… Would he?

After the bombard of questions Julie and Barnaby relaxed again and started to talk about normal neighborly things while Wally’s mind was stuck on the thought of you as he talked to them, he couldn’t wait to go home and see your sleeping form or your pretty eyes as you stared at him when he walked into the bedroom with you awake. He just hoped you weren’t trying to escape again and that Home was making sure you weren’t leaving anytime soon. You were stuck with him, you were stuck forever in Home, you were stuck in this realm with him. You were stuck and destined to soon fall in love with him, you were stuck….

And he couldn’t be happier!

Although he kept in mind that he had to keep an eye on Frank in order to keep you and make sure you’re not gonna escape, for Frank was getting too suspicious… But little did he know… He should also keep an eye on Barnaby.

Wally and Y/N are the only two currently trapped in the Entity's realm!

He was captured by the entity and is one of the many made to kill to feed the entity unwillingly

He obeys the entity in hopes of one day returning home/to his friends

The further the match goes on the more his hair starts to fall down out of his pompadour

Whenever he's seen crying black ink its majority of the time him mourning what he's lost and/or missing his friends/Home

Sometimes when he's alone he mutters to himself either about his friends, echoing convos he used to have w/ them, or is talkin to 'them' despite no one bein there

He hums Beautiful Dreamer to himself, almost like a comfort to distract himself from the reality of things

His hums work a lot like the Huntress

His eyes are always wide open, rarely lidded/relaxed

The entity absorbed itself partially into Wally's body and only bursts out in the back to make the claws to travel

The claws Wally can mostly control, the tendrils/tentacles is entirely the entity and he has absolute no control over them

The claws are entirely inspired by the same ones that covers gens and forms on hooks so think of them as relatively the same

Whenever Wally resists the Entity he feels intense pain throughout his whole body bc of the entity

Wally has only most control in the claws bc if he stays still/refuse to chase the Entity will take control and force Wally to go after survivors again; In a way the Entity is like a puppeteer if Wally disobeys, it takes control of his movements until he does what it wants again

Wally isn't willingly killing anyone, he does so because of the entity and the empty promise that obeying means he'll return home one day

Wally disassociates often bc of having to kill and sometimes hallucinates audio and visually

There's no true way for Wally to see/reunite with his friends unless he finally escapes the entity or the entity kidnaps them to become a survivor

The others don't know where Wally has gone, Home is the most distressed about this with Barnaby being a close second

The AU works with the theory/concept that WH exists in like a pocket universe where all the puppets are actually alive however Wally is the only one with a puppet in the real world/human world that he can actually control and such + is the only one aware of the real world outside of Home who only knows because Wally confided to him about it

Lol thank you for indulging me, anon. I have thought about this EXTENSIVELY so sorry not sorry for the tusnami of opinions you have unleashed.

Before I get into the list, a few points to explain my approach:

ONGOINGS. I am a firm believer in the importance of ongoing series. There's nothing wrong with a miniseries but you can't get any forward momentum or character development with them because things keep getting reset to their baseline. Get really strong teams on your ongoings and let them develop their stories for years at a time. That's where all the legendary runs come from.

To that end, I am proposing a list of 30 books, which is a little more than 7 per week, which is roughly what DC publishes now (not including things like Sandman, Looney Tunes, etc.). They can add on as many minis as they want but will need fewer since so many more characters are accounted for with ongoings.

I am a strong believer in backup features - more value for your dollar and double the amount of characters included - so you'll see a lot of those.

I tried to balance what I personally think would be the most holistic representation of the DCU with what I believe will sell, so you're still going to see a lot of Bats. It should be understood that books without Bats are not going to be treated like throwaways like they sometimes are now. They are going to get top tier creators with long, sustained runs, just like Bruce always gets.

It will not be a publishing slate of all straight white guys from the 30s-60s.

Books with an asterisk* mean they will be kid-friendly. Not exclusively for kids, but appealing and accessible to young readers, the way Young Justice and its members' books were in the 90s. They can still include ongoing plots and queer characters and serious topics! They just shouldn't be relentlessly grim.

OKAY THE BOOKS!

Super Books:

Superman*: The lead Superman title, with a backup featuring starring Jon.

Action Comics*: Focuses more on the Superfamily as a whole, though the plot can dovetail and cross over with the main Superman book. (This is basically what's happening now.) Backup feature rotates between Kon, John Henry, Natasha, Kenan, Lois, and Jimmy.

Supergirl*: Why did I give Kara her own book and not Kon or Jon? Because a) DC needs more female-led books and b) I want to. The primary audience for this book is women who watched the CW show, or girls who have outgrown TTGo! and DC Super Hero Girls, NOT ADULT MEN. (Optional: Kon or Natasha backup feature.)

Bat Books:

Batman: Like the Super books, this would be the central title and focus on Bruce. Backup feature can rotate between the nine billion Gotham characters who need a home.

Detective Comics: Focuses more on mysteries/the family. Another rotating backup feature. NOTE: These backup features CANNOT star a character with their own book (Bruce, Dick, Damian, Selina, or Harley).

Nightwing: Dick sells. ;)

Robin*: Starring Damian, Tim gets a team book further down.

Batwoman: Perhaps we could try letting a queer woman write this for once? Revolutionary, I know.

Catwoman: Because she fucking rules.

Harley Quinn: Because she fucking sells.

Birds of Prey: I prefer a classic Babs/Dinah/Helena lineup but I'm flexible.

Batgirls*: If it’s too messy to have Babs in BoP and this, take her out and add Harper.

Red Hood and the Outlaws: Imagine if this book was good! In my universe, it will be.

Solo Books:

Wonder Woman

Flash: This will star Wally. Optional backup rotates between Jay, Bart, Ace, and Avery. Barry can show up sometimes I guess.

Green Lantern: Starring Hal, John, or Kyle. Whoever is the lead CANNOT also be on the Justice League.

Green Lantern Corps: Okay yes technically this is a team book. Shhh. Guy should always be on this book since he does better in an ensemble. The plot should dovetail loosely with the main GL book with an annual crossover but you don't have to read both if you don't want to. I am flexible about how to fit all the Earth GLs in (including Simon and Jessica), whether that's backup features or just including them in the GLC ensemble, but all six should always have a publishing home. Jo should get as many prestige graphic novels as N. K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell care to bless us with.

Aquaman: Jackson backup. Please let him go back to being Aqualad and stop making everyone grow up so fast.

Green Arrow: This book is currently perfect, no notes.

Blue Beetle*: Starring Jaime, though Ted may show up to be annoying if he would like. A Booster backup is permissible.

Vixen: If they have a Webtoon they should have a comic for $ too.

Zatanna: See above.

...I'm torn between Shazam!* or Stargirl* here. I feel like they both kind of fizzled? I guess it depends on which book gets the better pitch.

Team Books:

Justice League: I mostly don't care who is on this but if it's a bunch of white guys plus Wonder Woman and either John Stewart or Cyborg as tokens, AGAIN, DC gets shut down permanently. I don't make the rules.

Justice Society: This is also not allowed to be only old white guys. I know that's harder with the JSA. I don't care.

Titans: I'm going to be honest, I'm not convinced the OG/New Teen Titans can star in a decent book anymore, since they haven't done so in two decades. But I will give them one more try. They can call themselves the Outsiders instead if that helps.

Young Justice*: They also maybe need a new name because they are all legal adults, but this is Tim's book. I'm highly skeptical of success here as well but I think the right creative team could make something really soapy and New Adult and queer work. Ok FOR REAL Theory Time!!! Gonna be massive spoilers plus mention of bugs/fungus! So I'm calling this the Mold Theory And what is the Mold? It's the black stuff under Home! (Mold under a house is very suiting, right?) The Mold has contaminated Every single thing that the Restoration team has found! The team talks about the envelopes, the antiques, and the artwork found for Welcome Home and how it is alwasys Wet and covered in Grime. The stuff that is "Growing" all over the found items... Staff must wear gloves or they will get covered in it

You can see it all over the gloves, the Walls, and even the Website Itself! It's also been shown on the restored art prior to the update. But one unfortunate person seems to have touched it. and that is.. The Question Answerer! (The head person of the Restoration team is also most likely infected) Now what this Mold does is, It seems to have an effect of the person's mental state. Causing them to see and hear things, as well as having lucid nightmares and an overwhelming urge to draw spirals. From the very moment of contact, it seems to have effect "When I Unwrapped the first letter, I felt it. I heard it. Open Open Open. I want it out, I'm Going to get it Out" Instant Hallucinations and Obsession! Now I'm going to be Comparing this Mold to a Real fungus called Cordyceps, or the Zombie-Ant Fungus. It is a fungus that can control BUGS (familar themes right?) and take over their minds, forcing them to act unnaturally and wander far in order to spread itself! ~Similarily~ this Mold can take control of the Host's mind as well. The "Spores" that it is trying to spread are the drawings of the spirals/eyes. And the more eyes are Drawn, the more Wally can SEE. Wally has made it truly apparent that he can see us through any rendition of his eyes. "I've seen you every time you've looked into my eyes" "I have more eyes than I did before, you know how to draw eyes You draw mine, many times. I know it is thanks to you, Neighbor.. That I can see.. but it is still.. I can't see" He is giving us instructions.. "You have work to do" -Giving us instrustions on how to draw an eye... "Please Open, Let me In" Now I find this last instruction very funny He doesn't say "Let me Out" No... He says "Let me IN" Into What? What are we Opening? Our doors?Our EYES? our Mind? our Heart?? I think that could be exactly it!!! Letting him.... into You!!! (The collective You) Isn't that Funny? A Funny little thought?! The Puppet becoming the Puppeteer! ooh hee hee hoo hoo I think I'm very clever about that! But there are so many themes of Strings/Control/Scripts That I simply couldn't help myself! Now does that mean I think Wally is Evil? Absolutely NOT I LOVE Wally, and hey, what's a bit of mind control between Neighbors? <333 I'll borrow a cup of sugar and you can borrow my sanity! That's what Neighbors are for! <3 Jokes aside, No I Do NOT think Wally is Evil!! No, he might become a Puppeteer over the Real world... (and It might be for good reason, to save his friends and himself) but he is still very much a Puppet himself. Literally and Figuratively, And the Real Mastermind behind the strings is... Home!

whaaaat? me making a welcome home au? hahahaha. absolutely.

so, it's called the Homeless AU. tl;dr: wally is now homeless and has become a side character. frank replaces him and has julie as their comic relief best friend instead of barnaby for wally.

in the homeless au, the area in the centre of the Neighbourhood where Home would usually be has been replaced with a park. this is where wally spends most of his time, singing for money. wally is ragged and his felt is desaturated and dirty. he looks like your perfect example of a homeless man. his character is played in a couple different ways at once. he's played in a sort of oscar the grouch situation, everyone (including wally himself) is perfectly content with wally living on the streets, and just visiting him from time to time. however, he's also played similarly to nicky from avenue q after he becomes homeless (in the way that it's not uncommon for julie to be walking down the road with frank, see wally, and say "poor thing, i'm so glad i'm not homeless" or things to that effect. 🎶schadenfreude!🎶)

instead of the more romantic episodes revolving around julie and wally as they usually would, they involve frank and julie. this makes frank wildly uncomfortable for a reason they can't quite figure out.

barnaby has become closer to howdy, however, his dynamic with wally is interesting. he certainly seems to miss wally, but he has no interest in trying to be his friend again. the odd quarter in a hat is enough for mr. beagle, it seems.

julie is now the co-protagonist (i forgot the word), and thus, her personality is amplified! she is nearly always bouncing off the walls, she's the only reason frank ever goes on any of their "adventures", and she's often the person to spout ideas when the time comes for brainstorming! however, frank can't help but notice that she seems a little bit shallower than she used to...hm.

howdy and eddie haven't really changed.

now, frank. oh, frank. they (aside from wally) are the most important character in the Homeless AU. just because you removed the house, does not mean you removed Home. Home is still there, and it needs someone to view through. but with wally now being a bit out of its reach, it grabs the closest thing: frank. they are thrown into a mess of self-awareness, omnipotency that scares them. they've never experienced anything like this. and when they try to tell anyone, it never works. barnaby says they're reading too much. eddie tells them it sounds like they need to rest. howdy thinks they're joking. julie zones out every time they bring it up. but wally. wally. sometimes, they're certain that wally is staring at them. sometimes, he gives them a knowing smile that sends chills down their spine. but the moment they blink, he's right back to performing.

they've gotta be losing their mind, right?

Like, what’s their work life, the roles they’ll play, what are their hobbies, and what was the inspiration when creating them? Oh, and will we see your butterfly OC by any chance? I love butterfly characters because of the unique and mesmerizing wing patterns.And fun fact, some butterflies are actually attracted to blood.

I don't mind at all! Though I've never been one to make many OCs. It was only until after Welcome Home did I consider making any at all so they aren't really finished. Also I am an indecisive person on personal creative projects like this.

Both Ankor and the butterfly OC are works in progresses since I could not decide on their appearance and backgrounds, but I do have a general idea of what I want them to be so I'll share!

Ankor, who might be renamed to something more fitting, is supposed to be a shark-like dog similar to Barnaby but his features are much more sharp and he gives off an aura of strength. I got this inspiration from seeing funny videos of sharks acting like puppies around some divers because they wanted pets on the head (they were literally pushing each other out of the way for a good scratch it was so cute).

Ankor's character is that of someone who loathes injustice so he often goes about setting things right. Or well, making the scales even. He's not a "good guy", but he's not really a villain at heart. He cares about others but he does things in a violent and lethal way. More often than not, he'll be wearing silk-like furs that are really just selkie furs. No, Ankor isn't hunting them or anything like poachers do, it's actually just a good way to try and find the coat's owner because he usually does concerts near coastal regions (Side explanation: I personally think in a world of magical creatures and normal ones there would absolutely be people sick enough to hunt others for their magical qualities so I added poachers in this universe because it adds a bit more depth and danger to anyone with magic in them). He has a giant audience which means there will be lots of eyes that will see the coat so someone is bound to come forward later and get it back. He repeats this over and over whenever a new coat is found and given back to the owner. Oh, but do not lie to him. He will absolutely know when someone is lying, and he does no take well to others lying straight to his face.

As for the music he does? I'm still deciding on that.

During his free time, Ankor sometimes visits the island to see Barnaby and just hang out. The island is very quiet, there's no chance of him being tracked there, and the finfolk that Barnaby lives with all have useful items that he often buys from them. It's a win win honestly.

Onto the butterfly OC. That one I almost got rid of.

Bit of a rant sort of, it's still a touchy subject to me

At the time last year, I don't remember around what month, but it was when Welcome Home was booming, I ended up getting lots of messages from people on X about my OC and if I could draw NSFW art of her or draw Wally. The fandom seems to have this pattern of wanting NSFW from artists of either the WH characters or their OCs. It is very concerning behavior and I decided to drop anything that could possibly be NSFW or leaning towards it in any way even though I wanted my OC to be sexy or drop dead gorgeous (she's a butterfly, of course she needs to be that). But it appears that adults on X and in this fandom are too immature for that.

Her whole design was something I wanted to be alluring because of her nature. I actually did take in the fact that butterflies drink blood, sweat, and tears literally, purposefully irritating the eyes of animals to make them cry, or eating dead flesh off of reptiles. I was thinking of making her a beautiful vampire but decided against that because it felt too generic.

I think, if butterflies could truly gain higher sentience and they became giant they would not be kind at all, but flesh-eating monsters that used their pretty looks to lure others in or take advantage of others. Also, my gods, their wings would probably get massive if they became even human-sized. Gorgeous, but massive enough to cause damage.

I didn't really take the chance to flesh out her character, but I did with her personality. She has a deep French accent and a gentle but elegant aura to her and with every step she takes she looks like royalty. And she'll still keep that act up when she's drinking away at her victim's life force and blood. I wanted this OC to be as cold as ice, but lovelier than the brightest star.

If she did have a job, I could only imagine it would be modeling at fashion shows, being a designer herself, being in ballet shows, or some sort of famous singer.

As for personal non-fandom OCs? I have very few, barely even two. In fact, these two are just a mere idea of a story I want to make, but I'm not sure how.

I'll share it some other time because I really have no idea of how I can possibly express these ideas other than imagine Swan Lake, but the guy she's in love with is an evil dark lord that wants to take over the world and she's a rogue knight from an opposing kingdom that's trying to kill him and they have no idea who each other are they just want each other dead but they find each other so pretty they can't do anything about it. 😭

You were so fragile! So very shiny! You were quite the adorable looking china doll! How would the puppet neighbors, made of felt and stuffing, treat such a unique neighbor?

Wally Darling

“You’re very shiny…”

Wally would be absolutely enamored! He’d love how shiny your skin is and how it just shines when underneath the bright neighborhood sun.

“Clink, clink..."

He'd love how cool your skin is to the touch, too! He'd be leaning on you during warm days because of how nice and cool your porcelain feels!

Barnaby Beagle

"Careful now, neighbor!"

Oh, the jokes he'd make related to your fragile china! He could come up with all the best dad jokes and he'd absolutely love to see your reactions to them!

"I get a crack outta you, neighbor!"

The moment he makes a joke about any cracks, he'd very quickly take it back out of worry it might have offended you in some way. Especially if you had cracked a part of your porcelain skin! It's all in good fun though, he really doesn't mean to make fun of you!

Eddie Dear

"Whoa there! 'Scuse me!"

A lot of the neighbors would feel quite nervous when you're with Eddie. Seeing as he is the clumsiest fella around! They get worried he might trip and fall on you, causing a crack or even worse! Little do they know, he's actually one of the most gentle puppets when it comes to you!

"Did I hurt ya?? Did anythin' break!?"

He'd get very nervous and worried himself if he accidentally bumps into you. Poor Eddie! He'd always be making sure you're alright, making sure everything is all smooth and nothing's chipped or cracked!

Frank Frankly

"Hmm..."

Frank would be ever so curious! You stand out so much compared to the other more felt-y puppets, especially when your skin would clink every time you clap your hands or accidentally stumble a bit. They'd be so interested and curious about you!

"When your skin cracks or chips... How do you even repair that??"

Only really used to the puppets being sown together, They'd get anxious about you getting any sort of injury, seeing as it seems there is no actual way to get you all better! They're quite fond of you though, they would love to take you out butterfly gazing with them from time to time!

Julie Joyful

"You're sooo pretty looking!"

She absolutely adores your design! And she especially loves the smooth feel of your skin compared to the way her felt kind feels. Julie would not hesitate to dress you up in all kinds of lovely outfits!

"These colors would look so, so good on you!"

Now, of course, Frank has to remind her from time to time to be more careful with you since she does tend to get a little too excited sometimes and her games might be a little too rough for you. She'd be trying her best! She just wants to have fun and play with you!... Safely!

Howdy Pillar

Howdy, being much much taller than you, would take extra precaution around you! He wouldn't want to accidentally hurt you in any way! He's especially quite curious about what you are exactly... Were you still a puppet? Or just a doll?

He actually likes the little clinks that come from you when you walk around, he thinks of it as your little calling sound! A little announcement that states your presence. It's just a neat little way for everyone to know where you are!

Sally Starlet

"Neighbor! You're so shiny!"

She'd think of you as a star! She loves how shiny you are underneath any kind of light, she'd love shining your glassy skin and admiring the smooth texture.

"Now we're both shining stars!"

Sally would absolutely love to be close to you and she'd feel just so comfortable with you! She's very careful around you though, especially when she'd wrap her arm around yours. She enjoys dancing with you underneath the stars in the evening, even more so when your friends join along!

Poppy Partridge

"Oh, dear! Please be careful!"

The poor Poppy! She'd be ever so worried about you all the time! Poppy would constantly be looking out for you and making sure you're okay. If you live next to her, she'd occasionally come by with some fresh baked cookies and give you a small check up to make sure everything is okay.

"Oh, goodness. Oh, dear! You're elbow has a chip!"

She'd get so panicked and concerned when something gets chipped or cracked, but she'd learned just how to fix you up! Poppy would keep it in her little med-kit and would often purchase the strong glue from Howdy, she'd be so very careful when fixing all the little cracks and chips!

We love a Welcome Home/Wally AU in this house. I’d like to introduce everyone to Concept Wally! He’s the product of a single brainstorming session by a failing studio, who needed to come up with an idea for a children’s programme. Unfortunately, the studio closed and everything was scrapped. The only thing that remained was a single concept sketch - that would be him, Concept Wally.

I’m just gonna copy/paste my notes from here because I’m lazy BUT please enjoy him and I hope you all love him as much as I do!! ;; He’s just a lil guy who doesn’t want to be forgotten!! Be nice to him.

welcome home in the early 70s; wally was going to be a fresh university graduate who just had a passion and desire to teach kids more than what school ever did, and he was going to do it with song! (specifically rock & roll genre, for a mass audience appeal)

 it never progressed the conception phase. somehow, he gained sentience - perhaps because of the sheer belief in the show his concept artist had

unfortunately, the studio closed only 2 weeks after wally was designed, and so the entire idea was scrapped.

wally was just a picture on paper. he hated that the idea was scrapped, didn't want to "die", so to speak.

somehow found a way to get in people's dreams, to "inspire" them to draw this character they dreamt of. and as they draw him he gains more power until he was able to tear himself from the page.

he's still able to go back into paper, and uses that to travel or get around quickly, and watch people (some 'take on me' music video type shit)

as above and so below: "as above" is being in the outside world, "so below" is being restricted to the paper. in order to stay out of below, he needs people to draw him. if they stop, he'll lose power and lose the ability to tear himself off the page

this mfer absolutely has gradient inky arms because I SAID SO. it is peak character design. (it wasn’t part of his original design, it just happened because of bleeding ink as paper ages, etc)

he cries ink. bleeds it. vomits it. it's his spit. it's literally what he's made of so no surprises there

the original concept was a life-sized puppet, or rather, someone in a thin felt-covered body suit, with a puppet head (think doodlebops but not painted). this wally is about 5'9".

his designed was loosely based on early 70s David Bowie.

the more people draw him in one type of way, that's how he'll appear when he's in the world. so if a bunch of people are drawing him like a lil Muppet man, then lmfao that's how he'll look until people start drawing him differently (which means people would have to be drawing him in a similar way for him to appear that way), otherwise he'll just take his initial concept sketch form on paper.

voice claim; g-man. half life. (he was never given a voice so finds speech odd. his words are stilted, and sound like something trying to mimic human speech. lots of weird emphasis, run on sentences. odd breaths here and there)

his main outfit is just a pair of trousers with a white button up that usually has the sleeves rolled 3/4, and a few buttons undone with a bright orange undershirt and heart patterned suspenders.

when his face goes dark and you can only see his eyes, there's ink dripping from his chin/cheeks (as if the ink is covering his whole face)

personality wise, he's a little odd. doesn't quite know how to "people", since he isn't one; they never got past concept art after all! but he isn't completely devoid of emotion or empathy. he holds strong affinity for the people who draw him (even if all you draw is a little stick figure of him!! he appreciates it so much ... and it still gives him power), calling them friends. he does get a bit jealous when he catches you drawing other things though! otherwise, he's completely harmless and just doesn't want to be forgotten

in your take/au/adulthood shenanigans for Sector V, if they (like one of the couples or whatever) were to ever have kids, what would they be like?

I AM SOOOOOO GLAD YOU ASKED...get ready for a long answer

Please note that all of these headcanons are cowritten by @sector-v and some of the kid OCs are his. I'll say which ones.

Let's start with Wally and Kuki

They foster kids, so a lot of kids have lived with them over the years, but three kids ended up sticking around. The two younger kids were adopted by them, and the older kid came into their home as an older teenager, so she just spent the rest of her childhood years with them.

Here they are:

Kat and Dirt Bug are in Sector V. I think Dirt's pronouns should be they/them instead maybe...I'm still developing these three, they're the newest of my kid OCs by several years. Dirt's name is like that because Wally let them name themself.

Kat- VERY energetic and impulsive. She's a bit sensitive, full of love and wonder, and prone to getting herself into trouble. She's very protective of her friends and siblings. She's also very into sports.

Dirt- Very curious and has absolutely no sense of danger. Also energetic, but mostly follows Kat around. Both Kat and Dirt LOVE bugs and collecting them. Dirt plays by their own rules, which they never share out loud. They somewhat live in their own reality, a lot like Kuki does.

Xue- She was in the foster system her whole life, so she's understandably standoffish around new people, including her new family. Her best friends are all internet friends. Wally and Kuki are trying to encourage her to get out more. I need to figure out more about her still.

Now for the Hoagie/Abby kids

I will admit my bias- Naomi is my favorite of all of them. Garth is @sector-v 's OC. Garth is short for Hogarth, making him Hogarth the Third!

Naomi is the leader of Sector V. Garth will join the KND too, but they won't be in Sector V at the same time, because of their age difference.

Naomi- Takes after both her parents to an alarming degree, but she has more energy than both of them put together. She loves inventing and engineering and is a huge extrovert. She's a natural leader who sometimes has a tendancy to be controlling. Her parents support anything she wants to do, so she's a very well-rounded kid with infinite resources. She's brilliant both academically and socially- and is a huge nerd...though she hates to be called one.

When she gets older, she's probably gonna start going by she/they

Garth- I don't know much about him yet, but he's definitely a typical younger brother in many ways.

Now...Lizzie and Nigel

They're a mixed family. Lizzie was married before she started talking to Nigel again, and she has one son from that previous marriage. His name is Joshua and he's @sector-v 's OC. Nigel becomes the Step Dad, but he hates being seen as the "parent" (he's got baggage about that). Lizzie and Nigel later have a child of their own, Monty Jr, who is also @sector-v 's OC. Actually this entire paragraph- pretend @sector-v wrote it, because these are all his ideas.

Joshua eventually joins Sector V, but was hesitant to at first.

Joshua- He and Naomi are inseparable best friends. Naomi got him to come out of his shell and pushed him to be more adventerous. Being raised by Lizzie, he's kind of meek and studious. He's a very well behaved kid, and Nigel doesn't know what to do with that.

Monty- I dunno he's a baby!

I could say more, but I think that's plenty! I have so many story ideas planned that feature them, but I have no idea if I'll ever draw them.

You know one thing I'm noticing in the some of the "horror" art for the series (at least in early drawings, so it might be a concept that's been changed a bit) is that a cuff link on Wally's sleeve tends to look like a cross. The imagery might have transferred over to Home's windows? It looks like an upside down cross in your icon

oh you are absolutely onto something; i’ve noticed it, too. something that is especially curious to me is that wally seems to have had those cross cufflinks until very recently - like, “there’s concept art on the ko-fi where he still has them with his canon design” recently. 

as for what it could mean... i think it’s worth noting that in older drafts of welcome home (i’m talkin’ pre-2020 here) wally seemed to be a lot more overtly antagonistic towards his fellow neighbors than he is today, in contrast to said older drafts’ protagonist, sunny. we don’t know much about what sunny would have actually done in this older version of welcome home, except for something about him being a “whistleblower” and that he was generally liked by the rest of the cast, sans maybe wally, but i digress. what i’m trying to say is in older drafts the cross cufflink seemed to be used as shorthand for wally viewing himself as Above his neighbors, which is something that would likely be at odds with his current characterization placing a lot of emphasis on ambiguous innocence and his sense of devotion - to his neighbors, to his audience, and in this context, most crucially, his Home. we don’t know what it would have meant had it been kept in post-2020 art and beyond, but the most common interpretation is that it was tied to ronald dorelaine himself somehow.

all this to say: i don’t think the cross imagery transferring to home means that home sees themself as above the rest of the gang, but i Do think it’s obvious that wally sees home as something sacred... a figure of worship, or at least that the two are so close that their relationship can be likened to that of a deity and their follower. what wally does with that devotion, however, is anyone’s guess.

If he is good friends with Wally then then he is a good friend to me too." "Julie is really the sweet one! Everyday she would come by and ask me if Wally would go out and play with her or with the others, she knows how to bring a smile to all the neighbors, even the gray grumpy one, Frank!" "Frank may be such a grump but he sure does know his butterflies! Although most of the time I see him outside the caterpillar's shop with those big round circular tool.. I'm unsure what he is doing but I tend to mind my own business"

"Speaking of the caterpillar.. Howdy is quite the hardworking neighbor. I see him carrying more than two boxes considering his extra limbs, he is a strong one as well! Although my only interactions with him is usually him bringing Wally to me and remind him to not steal apples from his shop, but now matter how many times I scold him he still tends to do it anyways... I mean I couldn't do anything about it, I'm just a house after all!"

"Sally is such a star! I may not see or interact with her often but hearing her plays from behind makes me think "Wow, she is so talented!" Oh I do wish to see her plays in my own eyes someday.. I would truly love to see her wonderful talent infront of me." "The most dearest mailman of all.. Eddie! He likes to greet me everytime he passes by me when he does his job, poor man gets chased by the big blue dog some of the time but I do help him but letting him inside to hide, which results to Eddie having a small chat with Wally most of the time!" "Oh Poppy, such a wonderous neighbor! She always knows how to care for her neighbors, and give them treats too. She was the one taking care of Wally when he has fallen ill and I didn't know what to do, she is such a caring and kind soul!" "And how could I forget... Wally! That’s why the teasing feels like it never ends. Young Justice still crosses my mind a lot, even though I'm not as into it anymore. It's still one of my all time favorites, particularly season 1, though that's not to say every season doesn't have things that I do enjoy.

There's plenty of positives to the show, but honestly, a lot of times I do wind up thinking about the things that weren't so great or could have been better.

Things that I hate or that bothered me about the show post s1(s1 is the shows peak for me):

The five year time skip and all subsequent large time skips were the WORST mistakes the show ever made. I will take this to my grave.

The stupidly massive cast was the second worst mistake. I would call it a bloated cast. Large casts aren't fun, and I think that even previous superhero shows such as Teen Titans and Justice League Unlimited handled such things in a better manner (though imo it's still not very desired). Bloated cast means no time to focus on characters, and that issue showed itself more and more starting from s2 onward. I personally believe the show should have stayed focused on the original six (eight if you want to include Zee and Rocket, which is fine), with team ups and cameos from other characters throughout the series, without drawing focus away from the Team.

Killing Wally off. I will absolutely admit that I'm biased, as Wally was my second favorite character almost neck and neck with Artemis. Whether or not one wants to consider it a "fair" or "good" writing decision or not, I personally will never see it as anything but a stupid decision for shock value. (Especially considering this show also ironically has a problem with constantly having characters "die" but then, oops not really.)

Artemis's personality was kind of ruined a bit after season 1. I understand that we mature as we age, but there's a big difference between maturing and then just... changing a character's personality. I think one of the ONLY instances that her old personality showed itself was that whole moment with her "stripper" comment about Brion's suggested hero moniker and punching Dick when he made fun of her. That's one of my favorite moments in s3 purely BECAUSE it felt like Artemis. Idk, she just felt like she lost a lot of traits. Like, they took all her sass and fire, the defiance and hard edges... I get that she'd mature but... I'm not sure how to put it. I feel like I've seen lots of fanfic that does her personality a lot more justice as an adult than the show did. (And this with me still being a big advocate and believer of "Artemis just wants to love and be loved". I think this just all adds to it.)

Imho, s3 really made me feel like the show has an issue with feeling like every single character in existence has to be paired up into a romantic relationship to show they've grown up. The super baby episode made that so obvious to me: everyone is straight, married, and has 2.5 kids and white picket fence kind of feel. It makes me so irritated. Marriage and kids are not the be all end all of growing up. Maybe it's because I'm aroace but I get a bad taste in my mouth thinking about this.

These are just my general gripes. I still love the show, there's great things to be found in all the seasons (Artemis and Violet, The Mars Arc in s4(I stopped watching after it though), Forager, Private Security(the episode none of us knew we needed), etc etc etc), so this isn't me saying I hate the show or anything. On the contrary. I just think... it could have been a lot better. I think some bad choices were made, even while others were great.

(And as a last aside, I don't really ship Spitfire much anymore. Like, don't get me wrong, I still like the pairing and all that. I'm just not super batshit for it anymore and don't think it's the be all end all of the show. I'm upset at what happened with them and I still find them cute, but I no longer know if I'd really want them to try and get back together if Wally came back, just due to so much time and space that would be between them. If the show could work it in as a natural thing, I'd be there for it, but otherwise, I wouldn't want it to be forced)

(I also love entertaining the idea of Artemis being Aromantic even though that's not remotely canon, lmao.)

(Also also, not a big fan of the whole fake!Wally and Artemis seeing each other one last time scenes much anymore. For various reasons. Some of it having to do with personalities and certain characters never facing consequences (coughZeeandM'ganncough), and some of it having to do with more annoyance at marriage and babies being fucking everywhere in media. I hate to sound so salty and awful but it DOES get really damn annoying when it's all over the place, especially all in one show shoving it down your throat.)

Originally they had one of those old Volkswagen campervans, ya know the kind, except instead of the rows of seats it usually has, it's been gutted out and renovated. In place are custom shelves they made themselves with little ropes on each level to keep them from flying about while they drive. In the center is a makeshift bed, a pillow and blanket, they've laid down to rest for the night wherever they stop for the night 7

He would travel the country in search of all new kinds of books to read! Fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, autobiographies, gardening, journals, you name it they've got it. After awhile though they settle down in The Neighborhood and permanently park the VW campervan out behind the library. Sometimes, he still goes out and sleeps amongst his old books from their last adventure.

Their role theyd play in the show, when it aired, would be teaching kids about libraries! How to get their own library card, how to check out books, how to find specific books, teaching them the Dewey Decimal System, and making occasional appearances when other characters stop by for help or to look for a book that might aid in whatever the topic is for certain episodes! I like to think they'd also show kids that libraries are a great place to study for all kinds of things, not just school, but if you ever wanna learn something new or learn more about an interesting topic, you can find it at your local library!

Say Sally wants to put on a play but she needs more info on what kind of play she wants to showcase. Percy would ask "Well, is it comedy? a tragedy? drama?" and they would direct Sally to the section she needs (◡‿◡✿) ☀️

Now, Welcome Home IS a Horror arg, so I was thinking of how I would play into that aspect as the towns librarian. I remember an old game I played as a kid that had a cute local library but you could only access a certain part to progress to story. There was a section of the library that was roped off, preventing you from straying further into the library. I know this was just a wall to make it LOOK like the library was bigger than it was but it got me thinking.

What if Percy Poems library had certain sections roped off? Beyond the ropes you could see rows and rows of shelves with seemingly endless books, a hazy blue light barely illuminating the path making it seem like it went on forever (it does). The only person allowed past these velvet ropes is Percy themself, and the bookworms he keeps as assistants. Neighbors and visitors are strictly forbidden from venturing further in and if there's a book they need back there he will either retrieve it himself OR have a bookworm get it.

My thought process was, welcome home will also deal with sentience (at least in the future) and I wanted to draw, or maybe even write, a scene between Percy and Wally of Wally forcing Percy to get people lost in the librarians endless corridors until they’ve “learnt their lesson”.

The only person who can pinpoint a persons location is Percy (seeing as he’s the librarian and caretaker) and so when Wally deems time is up he’ll ask Percy where they are and go fetch them himself.

Percy is intimidated by Wally so he keeps his mouth shut and eyes down. I mean, hes such a swell guy, and the town LOVES him.
