But this is my problem with this book: the projects and designs require non-ordinary, non-everyday materials. The book in its mission is a) deceitful and b) not accessible to a large audience.

My frustration can be summed up looking at the preface:

"While recycling today is trendy, I want to take it even further...not by decorating our homes with second-hand objects, but by starting with everyday objects that we have at home or can find easily."

Great, sounds good!

"I propose that you 'upcycle' or repurpose these objects, so common and ordinary that we lose sight of their decorative potential: crates, wood pallets, white cotton sheets, glass jars, wine bottles, tin cans, white dishes, lampshades, and more."

Okay, I need to stop the author here. WOOD PALLETS?? I don't have bonus wood pallets laying around the house. I can understand empty wine bottles if someone in your household drinks. The first chapter starts off with wood pallets as the base material, suggesting that you go out asking grocery stores if you could take extras (definitively not at home). Other supplies come with recommended stores (e.g. white boxes from IKEA) which is also antithetical to using your own objects and inadvertently capitalist in it’s promotion of specific large retailers (as opposed to an individual artisans or ‘your local vendor’).

This gets me to my final criticism: the book lacks creativity. Whereas the author or designer is creative (yet still adhering very much to trends), they do not encourage creativity whatsoever on the part of the reader. Materials are suggested with specific colors and dimensions. The back pages include any lettering printed out that you can tear and copy onto your project, exactly like what you see in the book. I don't see this as a positive: a) we all end up with the same stuff, b) the reader isn't learning anything in terms of lettering but also in terms of figuring out how they'd do a project, and c) the book subconsciously promotes consumerism by denying the reader the opportunity to determine their own project.

The book does offer a few guidelines for those attempting the projects, such as estimated duration, difficulty level, and technique applied. Ultimately, suggesting you add "since 1775" arbitrarily to a white plate implies a greater devotion to the superficial aesthetic of contemporary design, rather than actually considering where objects come from, how we engage with them, and our broader systems of production and consumption.

Overall, I did learn upcycling tips from this book, but in the end, I was profusely disappointed. If you really need very strict guidelines in your creative projects, as well as have the financial resources to gather all the required tools and materials, then you might like this book. I find it quite narrow, unoriginal, and inaccessible. I rate it 3/6 geese, because it is easy to read, the aesthetic is current, and there are lovely photos.

“I understood 80% of that sentence!” Logan’s eyes would get stuck at the back of his head one of these days. “But really, Logan, why not make an effort to make Anxiety feel more included? We don’t even really know him, and he probably moved here for a reason- Maybe he’s another Light Side!”

“Yeah, right, that dreadful- dork looks ready to kill a man and you think he’s a Light Side? He should try lightening up first, if you ask me,” Roman grinned at his joke, to the amusement of no one, except Patton who laughed out of politeness,”Also, his eyeshadow is absolutely garish, you’d think he doesn’t even TRY!” Roman threw an arm against his head as he fell against the logical Side next to him, who only smirked as he let Roman fall to the ground, making no effort to catch him. “TRAITOR!” The prince wailed from the ground, gripping one of Logan’s legs, gesturing dramatically with the other arm. “How could I, the all-beloved, talented, beautiful, charming, favoured Side of all be betrayed like this- by my own brethren no less!”

Before Logan could reply, already moving to pinch his nose, he fell. Roman grabbed the other’s leg, breaking out into thunderous laughter, only getting louder at the logical Side’s disgruntled expression. But his laugh was quickly cut off in favour of high-pitched squeaks, Logan wasting no time at all tickling him into submission, a cruel smile on his face.

“Unprepared for retaliation? A shame, for the prince to go down due to such an easily avoidable error.”

“Hey! Let me- Let go of me, you fiend! I demand to be freed- Patton! Patton, save me! Save me from this vile villain!”

“No- Patton, please-”

High-pitched laughing filled the living room, interrupted by screams. Patton’s smile was absolutely innocent, a stark contrast to Roman’s positively gleeful one. Logan, meanwhile, was crying for help. “Aww, come on Lo, we can stop as soon as you agree to helping us with anxiety’s present!”

“Us?”

“Yeah, of course, or do you not want to help?” Patton smiled, as sweet as a cherub, while Logan yelped on the ground in front of him, and Roman wasn’t frightened, per se, he’s a prince after all, but well- a prince always does good deeds whenever he can!

“No- I can’t wait, Patton, we shall show that Grinch the joys of Christmas! I am already thinking of ideas,” he grinned, conjuring a scroll of parchment and a self-inking quill, writing down the headline- “A Gift For A Grouch”- in pink, glittering, cursive writing.

Logan relaxed as Patton moved away from him in favour of looking over Roman’s shoulder as the creative Side jotted down ideas, calming his breathing and his nerves. Patton and his incessant tickling, it was humilitaing.

“Hey, Lo, c’mere, look at all of Roman’s ideas!”

“Yes, very fascinating- what would he do with a set of Magic: The gathering cards? He doesn’t have anyone to play with.”

“I was brainstorming, genius,” Roman muttered, striking out the idea. “Besides, I think we all know the obvious winner here-”

“Yeah, the onesie!”

“No- You mean the collection of works by Edgar Allan Poe, correct?”

“No! The make-up set, you fools! He obviously needs it.”

“Kiddo, don’t be mean!” The only reply Patton got was displeased grumbling, but he went on unbothered. “And we don’t know if he even likes that scary stuff, or if he already has it, if he does.” “And scary stories belong to Halloween, not Christmas.”

“Yeah, well, we don’t know his size, so we can’t make him a hoodie either, not even regarding how strenuous it’d be to make a hoodie in such a short amount of time.”

“Uh, I can conjure?”

“But it’s a present, it should be handmade!”

“Okay, well, we can’t very well sneak into his room and just measure him-”

“-I could! It’s what I did to get the measurements for your Christmas sweater last year! Did you know that you sleep-talk?”

“No, I… did not, Patton. Thanks for informing me of that,” Logan noted, stiffly. He’d definitely get a lock tomorrow. Maybe earlier.

“You’re welcome! Oh! What if we get him a housewarming present?”

“And what would that be? Maybe a stocked wardrobe?... I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything other than that hoodie in years, it’s a crime.”

“I can’t help it if it’s true!”

Roman came down with his drawing pad just a few minutes later, Logan planning how to do the actual blanket, guessing how much Anxiety would weigh to calculate the amount of pellets they’d need, and how much cotton would be needed to make it pleasantly soft, while Patton hummed christmas carols to himself, rolling out a batch of sugar cookies he’d quickly thrown together, before lining up a batch of different cookie cutters to make as many different shapes as possible. He especially liked the pumpkin and the elephant ones, as they always made Logan pinch his brow in that adorable, confused way of his.

It didn’t take long for Logan to be finished with the match behind it, and he sat next to Roman- Patton subtly keeping an eye on them, to make sure they wouldn’t argue too badly- looking over the prince’s designs and offering both praise and criticism. Both working towards a shared goal, it was easier to accept each other’s differences, easier to appreciate the other’s strengths.

The end product was a mix of black, purple and red, with stripes of white on the upper side, truly capturing Anxiety’s emo style, even if it seemed a bit more goth than his usual aesthetic. The flannel pattern wasn’t the main subject of their pride, though. That would the underside of the blanket, where they’d settled for a soft, crocheted blanket from Patton, in a light violet tone that looked like the clouds in the twilight of the dying sun, a calming colour with black embroidery they’d added, at the start just to proof that they were better at it than the other. Unknowing that the dark Side had accidentally knocked their note under his bed when reaching for his phone, Roman saw no reason not to let his hurt turn into bitterness, enjoying to get a rise out of the ungrateful Side. Logan, of course, had no such emotionally based reasoning, but if pressed he would admit that the other Side’s dismissal of their efforts was a tad… rude. But then again, he probably thought it a silly gesture, with his talk of Dark Sides not “doing” holidays, so he’d be glad to respect his views. Patton tried to stay nice, but wrapped under his covers, he was hurt- but he kept on hoping, he was sure Anxiety was nice under all his snarling and teasing!

He’d eventually be proven right, but none of the Light Sides knew that yet.

These blankets are good even for people with allergies like me who need to wash their blankets all the time in hot water to kill dust mites, 15lb blankets can go in washing and drying machines but above that weight you can put them in the washing machine but not your drying machine.

You can have a costume-made blanket or its cheaper to pick out one that’s pre-made and there is a wide selection to choose from.

It won’t feel quite like your cat. The grain-type filling will flop more from one side to the other, for example, as this quick job won’t be designed with keeping the bag even. I’m assuming you don’t move much in bed/in your sleep, as your cat did sleep on you, so it may not be a problem if you arrange the bag/pillow as best you can first, but for me it would be a problem, so I’ll mention it.

If the bag contains wheat or rice, and the bag is a non-flammable material like cotton, you might also like to microwave it for a minute or two before using to better mimic your cat’s body heat. (I go to bed at night with a heat bag at my feet because they’re always freezing.) If you do this, always put a glass of water in the microwave while you microwave the bag - this goes for any heat bag - and watch it while you microwave it. Microwave in short bursts, too, at least until you know how your microwave treats the bag. Every microwave varies! The time that worked on my bag at home burnt the wheat and the fabric both in my cousin’s microwave, so I am absolutely talking from experience.

Wheat Heat Bags often come in plush animal cases, but you could also try just the bag on its own. This post details where you can find them in Aussie department stores Big W and K-Mart, but you are likely able to find something similar in local department stores. These are really great because they don’t require any modification to turn them into a weighted plush toy and they’re full-size, huggable soft toys. (Here’s my review on the robot.)

DIY Options

This is something really easy to DIY, in that you can fill a pillow/cushion case or a store-bought soft toy/plushie with rice, plastic pellets, soup mix, dried beans, aquarium gravel, decorative gravel, glass counters or sand to provide weight. Of course, many of those won’t be washable (you’ll need to unpick seams and remove rice, soup mix or beans in order to wash the outer toy or pillow case) but they’re fairly inexpensive.

Remember when I said I would update?

Well I forgot. This isn’t even the update, this is the excuse that nobody is going to read. Most of my personal projects are currently on the back burner because I wasn’t happy with how they were coming along. All the SU stuff (other than Steven) heavily relies on Hobby Base Joints, which are not available in just about any of the colors I would need. For a while I was convinced I could dye them, and after a lot of trial and error I found that it was actually possible, but not with the kind of consistency I wanted. For example: Different sizes of ball joint in one batch would come out different shades, in the same amount of time some refused to dye at all. All the parts were cleaned rather vigorously, but perhaps a persistent mold release is to blame? Cold spots, maybe? Whatever, I’m not wasting any more time or money on this method. Why not paint them? I hate paint rub on joints. It’s one of my top pet peeves when it comes to toys. A few years ago I bought a NECA TF2 Heavy, and after a few minutes of fiddling I had already managed to strip most of the paint from his elbows, revealing a stark white joint beneath. It’s awful, I hate it, there’s no worse feeling in the world than immediately breaking or otherwise screwing up a brand new figure by just moving it around. Anyway, Hobby Base Joints are also limiting in other ways. There’s a lot of things that they just don’t make and I don’t want to have to rely on them forever if I don’t have to. They only started manufacturing figma wrist joints last December, and have yet to really come up with anything similar to the current figma style hips. I could make my own resin parts, but under any kind of stress the thinner sections would snap clean off. Where does that leave me? Well, over the past few months I’ve been doing a lot of reading up on hobby injection molding. Normally this sort of thing isn’t very economical because it involves expensive metal molds be made, but as it turns out I can use epoxy or even silicone molds for low run projects. In late July I started cobbling a DIY machine together. After getting about half the parts I found out I wouldn’t be able to run PVC through it without damaging its aluminum parts. That sorta put a damper on my progress. Of course I could still use this for other types of plastic: Polystyrene, HDPE, LDPE, and ABS, to name a few. ABS being what those Hobby Base parts are made of. Making my own durable joints, after all, is what started this whole thing. It’s just that I would also like the option to make durable flexible parts. LDPE could work, but it’s got a lot of properties that makes it rather difficult, if not nearly impossible, to paint. Backtracking to my distaste for paint rub for a minute; While I try to do my designs in a way that minimizes the need for paint, there will always be elements that need to be painted (eyes, logos, whatever else). Any material that can’t be painted with relative ease would need to be used selectively, if at all. TLDR: Perfect is the enemy of good. But wait, there’s more! Even once I get this all figured out, the trials and tribulations of color will begin anew as I try to figure out how to color plastic pellets with some amount of consistency. On paper I know how it’s done, we’ll find out how long it takes in practice.
