I’m Not Looking for Approval-Luke Hughes

Chapter One-House Party

Summary: After returning back from the world juniors tournament in Canada, Luke Hughes roommates decide to throw a house party where Luke meets a girl.

Warnings: underage drinking, use of nicotine device, throwing up

January 6th 2023

When Luke Hughes arrived back at his house in Michigan which he shared with his four roommates Mackie, Dylan, Ethan and Mark he walked straight into his room still contemplating the past few days.

Luke was happy they won the bronze medal he just really wished he could’ve brought home the gold. He was given the honor of being captain and he had felt like he let his team, his family and his country down.

Despite all the people close to him telling him he did his best and there is nothing else he could do. His brothers never won the gold it doesn’t mean they aren’t good enough except Luke wasn’t his brothers and he wanted to prove that he felt a need to prove that. It’s always been that way and when he took that bronze medal out of his bag and set it on his desk he couldn’t help but feeling a little aggravated.

Luke hears a knock on his door and walks over to open his bedroom door and sees his best friends Dylan Duke who was also a member of the bronze medal winning team standing there. “Hey” Dylan says

“hey what’s up?” Luke responds inviting Dylan into the room before taking a seat in his desk chair.

“I know you’re a little bit upset still but we tried our hardest we still won a medal you know and we got our Michigan team and we got the game tonight and it’s gonna be really fun getting to cheer the guys on also afterwards we’re hosting a little party” Dylan tells Luke

Tonight the Michigan wolverines play an exhibition game against a team from the National Teen Development Program a program Luke was apart of not too long ago.

Due to NCAA rules players who competed in the World Juniors Championship which ended on the 5th were required to take a maintenance day meaning they would be healthy scratches for tonights game.

Luke who is generally not into the whole party scene was definitely not looking forward to an after party especially not one being thrown in his house. However he knew he didn’t have much of a choice.

“Sounds fun” Luke replies Dylan gives Luke a slight smile and a pat on the back before exiting his room and walking downstairs to join the rest of his roommates.

Luke gets up from his seat to close his door which his roommate left open when he begins to overhear the conversation taking place downstairs.

“Is he ok?” Ethan Edwards asks

“I don’t know he’s still upset not mad just down I’m sure it’ll just take a few days for him to get over it” Dylan explains

“I hope so because we do kinda need him to win our games” Mark says

Luke still standing by his open bedroom door on the second floor shakes his head before gently shutting his door and making his way to his bed deciding to take a little nap before he has to get ready to meet the guys at the ice rink.

College sophomore Jade Brooks was arriving back in Michigan after spending the past three weeks in her home town Lexington, South Carolina.

Being the only child of a set of divorced parents always comes with some problems but when one of them remarries when you are 14 years old and suddenly you have two new siblings and a new step mom who you don’t get along with going home isn’t always your definition of a relaxing break. Which is why Jade decided to book her flight home the Friday before school started back up instead of spending the weekend in South Carolina.

After spending her first year in the dorms Jade opted to rent a four bedroom apartment with her previous roommate and two of their really close friends.

So far the experience has been amazing. All three of her current roommates are from out of state just like her and they all chose to stay in their hometowns until the Sunday before classes started meaning Jade would be arriving home to an empty apartment for the next two days which she was fine with she could use the peace and quite.

That was until her next door neighbor a girl who has become quite close with the four girls decided to make it her mission to take Jade to a party tonight.

The Michigan Wolverines ended up wining 7-6 against the programs team and Luke along with his five other teammates who participated in the world juniors tournament watched their team play from the press box in Yost arena.

After the game the boys met up with the other players in the locker room to congratulate them.

Luke enjoyed seeing his teammates having to leave in the middle of December Luke hadn’t seen some of them since before the start of winter break.

After chatting with a few of them the majority of the team dressed out and took showers.

Luke talked with his teammate Dylan Duke as they waited for their three other roommates to finish getting ready.

The majority of the team was coming to the party tonight except a few players who opted out.

Their team captain Nolan Moyle was tasked with buying the liquor being of age and having a in with the guy at the local liquor store who provided him with a pretty decent discount.

Around 10:30 a handful of the team had joined Luke and his roommates at his house and Moyle came shortly after bringing a very large amount of liquor.

“How many people are coming tonight?” Luke questions his roommates

“um I don’t know maybe like 70 or something Mark estimates.

Around 11:30 is when the party really starts going and soon the house inhibited by the sophomores of the university of Michigan hockey team was filled with around 60 people, drinking and dancing.

“Come on Jade hurry up the party started an hour ago!” Kelsey the next door neighbor and good friend of Jade complains

“I’m coming you’re the one who didn’t like my outfit” Jade defends walking out of her bedroom wearing a pair of black leather pants and a blue corset top.

“Ooo remind me to borrow that top from you next time you look great! Now come on let’s go!” Kelsey says

“ok ok just let me put my shoes on” Jade says reaching for her white platform converse. Kelsey waits impatiently as Jade takes her time double knotting the laces and finally Jade stands up.

“Finally let’s go!” Kelsey exclaims the two girls start walking in the direction of the hockey house and after a ten minute walk which consisted of Kelsey listing off and describing all of the boys on the UMich hockey team the two blondes arrive at the house.

They are invited in.

“Make sure you leave your location on tonight” Jade requests the second the two enter seeing the amount of drunk shenanigans happening in the house.

“ok ok I will do you want a drink?” Kelsey asks

“no I’m not drinking tonight” Jade says

“come on Jade it’s a party let loose” Kelsey encourages

“I have a essay I have to do for a summer internship tomorrow so I’m not gonna drink tonight” Jade lies just not really feeling like drinking tonight

Kelsey rolls her eyes and mumbles buzzkill as she makes her way towards the drink table leaving Jade alone in the crowded room.

Jade starts walking getting pushed left and right in the crowd and eventually makes her way over to the staircase which has been taped off at the top to prevent people from going into the boys rooms.

She takes a seat on the first few steps and pulls out an elf bar and her phone.

She spends a few minutes scrolling through her Instagram and taking occasional hits of her vape allowing her a somewhat buzzed feeling that unfortunately goes away in under five minutes.

Jade stands up and takes another hit then turns her head to release the mango flavored vapor from her lips and accidentally blows it directly into the face of a 6’2 tall brunette standing next to her.

He does a slight cough

“sorry I didn’t mean to blow that into your face” She says assuming he’s just as drunk as the rest of the crowd and will just laugh it off moving past her however she is a little surprised to see the half drinking water bottle in his hand

“no you’re all good” he replies

“are you drunk?” Jade asks without thinking.

The boy lets out a slight chuckle before replying “no I’m actually one of the few people in this room who is still sober? What about you?”

“I’m not drinking tonight” she tells him

“cool I’m Luke by the way” He introduces

“I’m Jade” She responds

“do you want a water” Luke offers

“ya thanks” Jade says and the two begin the normally easy journey of making there way to the kitchen which has became increasingly harder due to the amount of underaged drunk people in the way.

Getting about three steps in and already being pushed around Jade feels a hand on her waist guiding her forward and realizes it’s Luke helping her.

Eventually the two make their way over to the kitchen where the music is coming from and Luke opens the fridge and hands Jade a water.

“Do you live here?” Jade asks seeing a very blurry photo of what appears to be Luke and a few guys hanging on the fridge.

“What?” Luke asks unable to hear over the music

“I asked if you live here?” Jade repeats louder “oh ya” he confirms

“so you play hockey I’m assuming?” Jade says loudly

Luke still unable to hear her completely points to the door assuming they are about to start a conversation and willing to do it in a quieter place. Jade shrugs unsure of the meaning

“I can’t hear you that well so do you wanna go outside?” Luke says Jade understands part of it and nods yes.

With Luke guiding her again to ensure she doesn’t get pushed and pulled in a million other directions the two make their way to the back door which has a do not enter sign on it and step outside into the much quieter backyard.

“Sorry I couldn’t hear a single thing in there” Luke says taking a seat on the steps.

“No worries it’s crazy loud” Jade says taking a seat next to him

“where are you from?” Luke asks

“Lexington, South Carolina” Jade answers

“oh nice my grandparents have a house in Myrtle beach there I use to visit every summer when i was a kid I remember they had this festival sea of something every year it was my favorite thing!” Luke says

“ya the sea of stars festival I went that all the time it’s my favorite too do you still go?” Jade asks

“nah not anymore I typically have hockey stuff going on so I’m not able to make it out in time” Luke explains

“So you’re a hockey player?” Jade asks

“ya I uh play for the wolverines and I got drafted a few years ago to play for the New Jersey Devils” Luke says

“really that’s awesome! I don’t know too much about hockey but I know a few of my friends like to watch it” Jade says

“ya I got two brothers playing in the NHL right now one of them is in Jersey the others in Vancouver” Luke says

“oh so you’re a big hockey family” Jade says

“ha ya ya kinda in my blood I guess” Luke says

“that sounds nice you always have people in the game your close with” Jade says

“ya ya it’s nice I’m probably gonna go play with my brother at the end of my season” Luke says his smile breaking a little

“are you not excited?” Jade asks getting a surprised look from Luke

“I’m sorry that wasn’t a great question” Jade says

“no no it’s fine it’s just people don’t usually ask if I’m excited because they assume I am”

“well are you?” Jade asks

“I think I am I think you know it’s every kids dream to play at that level and to get there is amazing but at the same time im gonna miss my friends and playing on a team with my brother where he’s already achieved so much and is constantly getting better I just I don’t know im not at the same level and being at Michigan I get to play as me but in jersey it’s him and I and ya I just I don’t know” Luke explains

“you don’t like getting compared to him” Jade spells it out

“ya ya that’s pretty much it” Luke chuckles “I’m different from my brothers and I just wanna make sure that’s known and I don’t wanna be in his shadow for my whole career” Luke continues

“I get it I mean I don’t get it completely but I do get it a little” Jade says

“what about you do you have any siblings?” Luke asks

“uh I have two step brothers” Jade answers

“ya that’s cool” Luke replies “are you guys close?”

“not really one is 27 and the other one is 23 and our parents got married when I was 14 so I never really lived with them but they are nice they both went to school in South Carolina” Jade says

“oh cool so why’d you choose Michigan instead of South Carolina?”

“I’m not that close with my parents I grew up mainly with my dad and he worked a lot and my mom was busy a lot and I don’t get along too much with my step mom and my friends were all going out of state so there was nothing really tying me down there and Michigan gave me a pretty good scholarship”

“ya that’s cool” Luke says

“So do you just not drink or just not tonight?” Luke asks

“just not tonight I wasn’t feeling it but my friend dragged me out so how about you?” Jade replies

“ya just not feeling it but couldn’t really escape the party being thrown downstairs so” Luke says

Jade laughs then she reaches into her back pocket and takes out her elf bar taking a hit and blowing it in the opposite direction of Luke before turning back to him.

“Do you want a hit?” She offers

“nah I’m good we get tested for drugs so I can’t” Luke explains Jade nods and puts the vape back in her pocket

The pair continue talking for an hour talking about hockey, growing up, family stuff and everything. Until the back door swings open.

“Hey sorry uh there’s a girl who’s really drunk I think she needs some help her names uh Kelsey says she knows you” a somewhat drunk Mark Estapa says

“oh shit” Jade says starting to get up Luke stands up as well and the pair walk inside to the almost empty space.

There were only about 20 people left and most of them were from the hockey team and almost all of them were drunk.

Mark escorts the pair to a hallway where the bathroom is and Jade sees her friend hunched over the toilet close to but not yet throwing up.

“I’m gonna go grab her a water” Luke says rushing to the kitchen

“thank you” Jade says walking towards her friend and pulling her hair back.

Kelsey begins throwing up and after a few minutes Luke comes back just in time with a bottle of water and a clean towel.

Kelsey flushes the vomit down the toilet and leans up against the wall accepting the towel and bottle

“water?” Kelsey asks

“ya it’s just water don’t worry” Luke says

Jade helps her friend twist off the cap and encourages her to drink the bottle.

“Where do you guys live?” Luke asks

“in the apartments about two streets over I’m gonna walk her home once she finishes the water” Jade says

“no look I haven’t had a sip of anything other than water all night let me grab my keys and I’ll drive you both home” Luke offers

“no no it’s ok I can’t ask that” Jade says

“you’re not asking I’m offering and it’s 2 in the morning you shouldn’t be walking home” Luke says

Jade flashes a slight smile at Luke and thanks him Luke returns the smile and walks out of the bathroom and upstairs to grab his keys.

Once he returns back down he shuts off the music still playing and checks on a few of his teammates all of them had been drinking except two sober ones who were watching over the rest of them.

Luke sighed knowing probably most of them were going to sleepover and he’d wake up in a house full of hungover people.

Once he got the all good signal from Jackson Hallum and Eric Ciccolini the two sober players Luke headed back to the bathroom where Jade was helping Kelsey onto her feet.

Luke took over and easily got her up and helped walk her to the door with Jade following.

The trio made it to Lukes car which was parked on the street and Jade sat in the back with Kelsey while Luke got in the drivers seat.

It was a short 5 minute drive. Jade thanked Luke again for driving them and Kelsey was falling in and out of sleep.

When they arrived at the apartment complex Jade swiped them in and Luke helps Kelsey get to Jades apartment.

Jade unlocks the door.

“You can just put her on the couch” Jade says

Luke helps Kelsey to the couch and she puts her legs up and cuddling into the couch

“you know you’re kinda cute” a drunk Kelsey says Luke and Jade laugh

“how did you manage to find a nice cute sober guy that’s like rare findings or something” Kelsey continues

“don’t let this one go” she says before finally resting her head down and falling asleep

Jade shakes her head and then places a glass of water on the coffee table in front of her.

“Thank you again so much” Jade says

“ya of course I’m glad she got home safe and she’s lucky to have a good friend to take care of her” Jade blushes a little bit which Luke notices

“um let me walk you out” Jade says

The two start walking towards the front door when a drunk Kelsey wakes up and says “don’t forget to get her number” clearly directed at Luke Jade shakes her head and laughs

“well it’s not a bad idea” Luke says Jade smiles and pulls out her phone and hands it to Luke having him type his number in she saves the contact and the two walk out of her apartment and back down to the lobby.

Luke flashes one last smile at Jade before exiting the building and getting back into his car driving back to his house.

A few of the guys were getting into Jackson and Eric’s cars with help from them and Luke called out to them to be safe before entering his house and seeing two of his roommates asleep on the couch and three of his freshman teammates asleep on the floor.

Luke shakes his head and heads upstairs into his own bedroom and lays down pulling out his phone and seeing a new message from an unknown number.

Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1C

Mary Testa (1955) is a broad's broad. Her bold and brassy belt evokes the powerhouse pipes of the great Ethel Merman. With two Tony nominations for On the Town (1999) and that sexy Oklahoma (2018) revival everyone went crazy over (and I hated), Mary has also appeared in The Rink (1984), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1996), and Xanadu (2007). She recently finished an off-Broadway run in The Gardens of Anuncia, a LaChiusa musical with an astonishing four roles for women over forty. I was enraptured.

Hailed as "The Voice of Broadway" by New York magazine, Betty Buckley (1947) started her illustrious life on the stage in 1969 as Martha Jefferson in the original 1776. Since then, she has had a Tony-winning career (for a musical I refuse to name on principle) spanning Broadway, regional, and successful concert tours. She is known for Carrie (1988)--and also appeared in the film--a Norma Desmond replacement in Sunset Boulevard, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood (1986). She's a divorced, childless GILF living on a gorgeous horse ranch in Texas. Truly an ideal life.

What makes someone a nepo baby?

The main qualifier is that their parent(s) are famous or highly accomplished in some way, usually in a way that benefits the child. This could be anything from superheroes to celebrities to CEOs to politicians to actual gods. I'll list some examples below (note that none of these characters are included automatically):

Will Stronghold from Sky High (son of two superheroes & inherits BOTH their powers)

Charley Witherspoon from BoJack Horseman (works for the company his father runs, and we know nepotism is the only reason he got the job because he is COMPLETELY inept at it)

With a moderate lead of 55% (or 55 of 100 votes), something that isn't actually a ship takes yet another round. With this, the Snatcher has exited the tournament entirely. (Spoiler: Conductor is now represented in 50% of the bracket.)

Match 3: Badge Seller/Twilight Goat vs Queen Vanessa/Ms. Pauling from Team Fortress 2

With 57.8% (or 37 of 64 votes), Paulessa wins the round! Badge/Twigoat performed honorably, but could not stand against the rising tide.

Match 4: Cooking Cat/Empress vs Conductor/DJ Grooves

This poll's lead shifted throughout its duration more times than any other so far. I can't help but wonder if the result might have been different if the duration was longer, but for a long time it really looked like Subway Sandwich was going to win! That would have been an interesting upset, but ultimately, DiscoTrain did prevail, by a higher lead (54.6%, or 59 of 108 votes) than would have permitted me to merge them as FurFest 2023.

So… who’s King Barou™️ getting shipped with in the CO universe?

You: *asks a really straightforward question*

Me: lemme concoct backstories for fifteen other characters, then I'll get back to you

I wish I was joking 💀 but also I love getting these kind of questions, it lets me be indulgent about my AU! So thank you 💗

For context: I am writing a Kunigiri longfic set in 2033-34. This has involved making up fifteen years worth of post-canon life events for the principal cast. Barou doesn't feature prominently, but Kunigami recently revealed that he had a crush on the King back in their Blue Lock days.

Kunigami has moved on by now (like... reeeallly moved on), but Barou's still around, being his good ol' tsundy self. Does he have a partner? Well...

To figure this out, I had to remind myself who's actually on the national team with Barou and work through their dynamics. So...

Sixteen character backstories under the cut, eventually getting to your question.

The following characters have been named in Cassis Orange as being on the Japanese national team, in order of position/role:

Isagi (FW)

This means that 2018 Blue Lock alumni occupy sixteen places in the squad (which should have 23-25 places). Probably two or three too many—ah well. I've alleged that some of the other squad members participated in the second Blue Lock program (which took place in... 2023, right around now lol). There's likely a few other older players from before Blue Lock's time, but it's really Isagi and friends' team.

Everybody knows team squads are synonymous with dating pools in Blue Lock. So, in considering who Barou might be shipped with, I had to think through where everyone was at in life, come January 2034, in my particular AU. Here's the lowdown:

Aiku (34) is currently working through his second divorce. He has a couple of kids. He remains good friends with his teammate Sendou (33), who plays for a Japanese club normally and does a lot of promotional work with sportwear companies.

Karasu (33), Otoya (32) and Shidou (33) represent something of a clique within the squad. The three play for French clubs, alongside Rin (31), who resents being mentioned in the same paragraph as them. Everyone but Otoya is outwardly single, as far as the media knows. Otoya dates influencers and idols.

Because Rin's home club is in France, he doesn't care to rent or purchase a place in Japan. Hiori (32), a long-time friend and Tokyo resident, agreed to let him stay at his apartment for the duration of the tournament. Hiori is single, and streams part-time. Players enjoy the juxtaposition between his gentle personality and the violent games he plays. He plays for the Kawasaki Breakers.

Sae (33) is based in the UK. He has won the Ballon D'Or twice. Although there's been speculation about the nature of his long-term friendship with Shidou, he refuses to speak about his personal life to the press.

Isagi (32) has lead his home club (Bastard Munchen) to victory in the Champions League twice, and he is widely regarded as one of the finest players of his generation. This World Cup will be the third he's contested, and his first as captain. He has stated publicly that third time's the charm. He is openly single, based in Munich. He started a charity to promote football in developing countries in 2027.

Bachira (32) has played for mostly Spanish clubs over the years. He's an advocate for youth football and does outreach work in schools both in Japan and Spain. He has auctioned his own artworks for charity. Not much is know about his personal life, despite his outgoing personality.

Nagi (32) was the face of Japanese football for the 2030 World Cup, in association with Reo (32). The two of them were inseparable following their days in Blue Lock, choosing to play at the same or neighbouring clubs throughout their careers. However, due to his father's untimely death, Reo stepped down from football two years previously. Since then, Nagi has been media shy. Despite his relative youth, there are rumours circulating that he intends to retire soon.

Niko (31) is a formidable centre-back who (with Aiku) forms the iron defence of the Japanese team. He's open about his neurodivergence and advocates for the inclusion of kids like himself in sports. It's understood he has a partner living in England, where he's based.

Fukaku (34) plays for a Japanese team, and has indicated his intention to retire after the 2034 World Cup tournament. As for Gagamaru (33), the man known as the world's best goalkeeper is notoriously reclusive. He is picky about what clubs he plays for, prioritising proximity to nature and the mountains over salary offers. As a result, he's mostly played for German clubs. Nothing is known about his relationship status.

FInally...

That leaves Barou (33) and Aryu (34). The duo play for Fiorentina. It's reported that the two share a villa together in the city's outskirts. Aryu has dabbled in modelling and fashion for many years, and his self-titled brand is steadily growing in renown.

Aryu speaks of Barou as his glamorous partner... but he calls next to everything glamorous, leaving the media stumped.

Barou, meanwhile, refuses to entertain fluff piece journalists and has neglected to comment on his relationship with the towering wingback. There is no record of any public affection between them both. However, the two are certainly very close. Last year, they both began sporting matching black rings.

I spent waaaay too much time writing this but once I started I felt like I couldn’t stop lmao, so I’m applauding anyone that gets through it!

The story of how I ended up where I am today is a long and winding road lmao. But I think I should start by prefacing with the fact that hockey has been a part of my life since I was born essentially. There are pictures of me on a pair of skates at around age 2 when my dad first tried to teach me! Then I played consistently from age 6 to 14 but quit when they wanted me to leave the “girls” team and play with the women because I was intimidated haha. Besides playing myself I’ve also spent many hours with my dad on the couch watching Sweden play in any and all kinds of tournaments, worlds, Olympics you name it, and since he never really rooted for any other team in Sweden or outside of it I just kind of slowly fell into that same thing. I knew there was a hockey league overseas that a lot of our own players were shipped off to but I never really had any interest in rooting for a team that wasn’t team Sweden at the time.

In the winter of 2014, I was at the ripe age of 15 and I did not play hockey anymore nor did I care about any teams really, but two of my best friends at the time became OBSESSED with this one junior player and kept talking about him. This man was none other than Thee Mr Willy Nylander himself. This led to the three of us obsessing over him and we watched him play in the world juniors over our winter break. It got to the point of us picking fights with people on twitter that said he was a bad player and really anyone that said anything negative about our Swedish players hahaha. We had a group chat named after him and everything. We eventually lost interest and forgot about him but this story is important because it comes back later.

Flash forward to May 2023! Before I entered my hockey era again I had an eight month long absolutely crushing obsession with the TV show 9-1-1 that was airing on Fox at the time (ABC now thank god, I still keep track) that came to a screeching halt when the season 6 finale aired and I hated it. I swore up and down that I was never ever going to watch that show again and now that the one thing I had been so fixated on for so long was gone I did not know what to do with myself. Which sounds so dramatic but honestly sometimes I don’t know who I am if I have nothing to obsess over. So naturally I needed entertainment and as I looked up through the haze of firefighters and network drama I found that the 2023 IIHF World Championship in Tampere and Riga was on! And I had no choice! There was hockey to be watched and I sure did watch it. Now, it did not go too well for the Swedish team last year, which is okay. But one thing that happened was the constant debate on wether Willy Nylander was going to join in. His brother was there and his teammate Timothy Liljegren also joined in. But there was no word on Willy himself. And it was all they talked about. He obviously did not end up joining but all the talk had made me nostalgic. And naturally I had to revisit the old object of obsession and see how he was doing over the Atlantic and turns out he was doing quite well indeed. And because I am a sucker for team dynamics and narratives (who could ever believe I studied film for five years) I desperately clung onto the Toronto Maple Leafs like my life depended on it. What I didn’t know was that these were also transformative times, and once I’d gotten into the team and the organization, I was bewildered when Kyle Dubas all of a sudden was going to another team??? How could that be?? The Penguins?? And that’s when I found my way to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the power of Dubas’ cardigans and Sidney Crosby’s fat ass gripped me and now I split my time between my equally cursed teams like they’re my divorced parents. And here we are.

Naturally there are a lot of nuances left out of here, I’ve covered the key points but I think that there are probably so many reasons that it was the perfect time for me to get into hockey again and here we are almost a year later and there’s no going back now!! I’m stuck here forever. And I would not have it any other way <3

This is the end of ramblings and I’ll say if there’s anything I love more than hockey, it’s being dramatic, and also I didn’t spell check this at all so if it’s not perfect I’m sorry (I’d love to blame it on English not being my first language but it’s the only subject I’ve always had straight A’s in so it’s not really applicable it’s just me being lazy)

This all changes quickly when Minister Shacklebolt decides not to run for another term. The assumption is that ‘all is well’ in the British Magical world, and that Hermione Granger-Weasley will easily be voted in as the next Minister for Magic. However, Draco knows better. He knows she has a strong competitor who is wooing those who live in Knockturn. And if he wins, the Ministry, and all that has been accomplished the previous twenty odd years, will be destroyed. Even if that beast looks less like the large, bipedal talking toads they find and more like the Ministry of Magic as a whole.

ree is a member of team skull. They have been part of team skull since they were eleven years old.

For a long time, they were the youngest member of the group.

they are currently fifteen years old.

ree is from unova, and still has a very thick Castilian accent.

ree is recovering from a very big, serious injury that happened a few short months ago.

They’re using a wheelchair part of the time

ree recently participated in the alolan trials; people have taken note of this because they’ve got an impressive battling record.

their main partner is a Zorua, named Pickip, who they say they “met in the dump”

their secondary main parter is a togekiss named Lady of Destruction, who they found as an abandoned egg. She has contracted pokerus, and thus is eleven feet tall.

Ree is the CHAMPION OF LIFE, as they won the title in the 2023 Pokemon World Tournament. They participated in the JOURNEYMANS CATEGORY, and were sponsored by RED

They have completed their trials and collected most of the required Z-crystals for the alolan challenge

They did challenge the league and the champion, but unfortunately lost in the final round.

They are currently working in the battle tree part time, as recommended by Red, and are working with the league board as a stand in for the current champion Satoshi as he travels around the world. ree isn’t sure what that means for them.

they are wholly devoted to team skull.

Semi-Private Knowledge ( information that only a few people/select groups know )

ree was sent to live with their uncle and auntie, who were childless, when they were six years old.

Their parents claimed it would only be for the summer (unknown to ree, the two were trying to work on their marriage, and thus they sent them away to not be underfoot)

they lived on melemele island for this duration of their childhood

their parents wound up getting divorced and Ree was left to grow up in Alola. Ree is unaware of the divorce.

ree had one partner pokemon, a Rockruff named Rocky. Their auntie had caught it for them when they arrived in alola.

ree spent most of their time in melemele outside, exploring the world around them.

Just shy of the age of eleven, ree left their uncles home.

they joined skull about six months after they left

ree has two older brothers; Renji and Riley. Their whereabouts are unknown to ree.

ree has post concussion syndrome from an injury they sustained when they were thirteen.

Ree has difficulty with using Z-moves because it puts their body under a huge amount of strain.

Private Knowledge ( information that very few knows )

Ree’s scarred eye was an injury that their uncle inflicted on them. It was the first and only time he hit them, but he shattered their glasses into their face. their eyesight is completely lost in that eye.

It is the reason they left their uncle and auntie’s house — they were too scared to stay anymore.

They were forced to leave Rocky behind. Ree has never forgiven themself for that.

ree hid in the forest for three days, too scared to find help. They were taken care of by a group of stuffl and a Bewear during those three days, until the infection from their eye started to get dangerous and was threatening their life.

The bravest stuffl of the bunch went to go get help — and brought someone back to take ree to a hospital.

that person took care of ree for four months, until they ran away.

ree does not remember who that person was.

they do not remember why they felt they had to leave.

🥰 Second Chances in New Port Stephen (TJ Alexander, author; Aden Hakimi & Feodor Chin, narrator) - 2nd chance romance between 2 former HS sweethearts after Eli comes back home to his small FL home town (post-transition & unemployed due to proximity to an industry scandal) and reconnects with Nick (who left for college, came back, got married & divorced and became a (hot) dad). Also there is a fat ginger cat named Sweet Potato. I kind of love what a mess Eli is. Nick is also a bit of a mess but masking it better. I loved them both.

My Review:

I loved this cute summer romance. The characters were fun and quirky and believable, and who doesn't want to read about thirty-somethings falling in love at their first experience of summer camp?

Garland was a great main character and I really sympathized with her. She had banked on a happy-ever-after only to find out it wasn't and end up living with her sister and driving for a ride-share program and not knowing what to do with her life. Her sister Dara was also great and I would read more about her for sure. They were both grappling with their childhood dreams of love not turning out like they'd expected and learning to embrace their choices.

I loved Stevie and her brothers. They were vibrant and boisterous and they obviously loved each other very much. They swept Garland up into the family dynamic she'd always needed and it was really sweet.

The love story was adorable and a great way to allow Garland to let go of her past expectations and embrace what she truly wanted. I was 100% there for it and I'm so happy with how it turned out. I also love the way the experience of finally getting to go to summer camp helped the sisters embrace their quirks and become more confident in themselves.

Reading this made me want to go to summer camp too. It all felt very real, and the next best thing to going myself.
