hi! i was super curious after reading your pages and i really hope this doesn't come off as rude, it's genuine interest! i saw that you portray diego as having avpd, and i'm super intrigued by what makes you think so as someone with avpd myself. is it something you also have? is it just headcanon-based or are there elements of his canon character that made you think avpd fit him?

Hi! I don't find this rude at all, Nonnie. Psychology is actually my static Special Interest and I've been researching this stuff for yeaaars so I tend to diagnose my muses based on how I feel I portray them. I'm a mentally ill and disabled autistic person and I will acquire representation for the whole of the disabled community where-ever possible. So it's definitely a headcanon for the muse, but it's rooted in how I perceive Diego in the sources.

(To preface; I have bpd personally and do not have avpd. I in no way want to speak over anyone who does and if this does not sound accurate I would love to know how I can change my perception or what I can do to better portray what I am trying to convey with him!)

Personality disorders are generally a response based on our upbringing, it's how our caregivers condition us to respond to people. All of my muses have personality disorders because while the Umbrellas had Grace their upbringing was not a healthy environment and their "father" was mentally and verbally abusive, manipulative as shit, and absolutely crippled their self-esteem.

People with avpd are high empathy ( though they often fixate on the negative vibes they get about themself from others ), low self-esteem, struggle with identity, set unrealistic standards for themselves, and often keep people at arm's length. A lot of these stem back to Diego's upbringing - he grew up with a speech disorder, and s1 shows us many hints that even his siblings talked over him for him ( Luther and Five interrupt him mid-sentence a lot. )

high empathy / high rejection sensitivity / holds others at a distance:

[at the funeral] Viktor: You never know when to stop do you? Diego: You got enough source material for your next book?

Diego takes Viktor's comment as a negative remark against him so he verbally pushes Viktor away in a way that he knows will make Viktor leave him alone. For people with personality disorders ( this is especially common in my experience with bpd ) your brain believes that if you push someone away then you made them leave and that they cannot abandon/reject you because you yourself made that “choice”.

The thing about empathy is that s1 Diego seems like such an asshole because he always knows exactly what to say to hurt his siblings where it counts because he can read most of them like a book. I do think he struggles the most with reading Klaus and yet this is what makes Klaus the sibling Diego pushes away the least. Klaus is the designated safe sibling of s1 due to his own low empathy because Diego can’t figure out what Klaus is feeling at any given time so Diego generally takes Klaus’ words at face value. ( Likewise Klaus knows Diego well enough to know that if he’s nice to him or compliments him Diego will lower his guard and let him stick around even though he feigns annoyance with him. )

struggle with identity / low self-esteem:

The whole bargain Batman thing. Diego admits to Allison in s3 that this was a coping mechanism. Even though he had left the academy after Ben’s death Diego did not know what to do with himself. He wasn’t cut out for the police force so he became a vigilante. This carries over into s2 the moment he’s out of the asylum, he wants to save the president. Because being a hero is all Diego really knows how to do, his concept of who he is without his upbringing is practically nonexistent.

A second part of this: Diego’s Mexican Spanish accent is not the one he had as a kid, he was raised by an upperclass American accented asshole and a robot mom given the same accent. I’ve always headcanoned that Diego got more in-touch with his roots when he left the academy and that he picked up the accent up as a character voice in order to block his stutter. (I use 'character voice’ clinically, I really do believe Diego is proud of his heritage and enjoys showing it of with his voice whenever possible so that there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that this is a Mexican man.) Because many people who stutter can sing and act without stuttering, there’s something in the conscious effort of maintaining a certain quality to your voice that often sidesteps the impediment. But we hear his childhood accent come out again any time that he is so emotionally overwhelmed that he starts stuttering. (And I give David so much credit for this as an actor because it’s all so subtle, especially because David is having to imitate younger Diego actor’s voice when his Mexican accent is actually his natural one.)

What I’m saying here is tl;dr - Diego does that accent consciously because it’s the most consistent sense of identity he has because it’s not rooted in his childhood and he developed it all on his own.

sets unrealistic expectations for himself:

Where do I even begin !!

s1 is Diego taking on caring for Grace’s deteriorating wellbeing himself. He takes Reginald’s monocle from her to protect her from his siblings. He shuts her down himself. He tries to join Patch’s investigations repeatedly even though it gets him arrested at one point because he’s not a police officer. After Patch dies it becomes about him wanting to seek revenge for her against Hazel and Cha-Cha. Diego has a lot of extremely high expectations for himself because as a child there were always high expectations hanging over his head.

s2 Diego so obsessed with saving JFK despite knowing the president dying is a thing that is supposed to happen for the sake of the future he came from. A lot of Diego’s inferiority complex is root in his position in the lineup growing up being Number Two.And thankfully by s2 Diego does realise that Luther being Number One is not the actual root of his conflict - it’s the sense of no matter how much he accomplished it was never enough for their father. However, he doesn’t actually understand how deep this complex is rooted until the grassy knoll point where Reginald has ONCE AGAIN shoved his failure in his face.

As harsh as that wakeup call is, this is why we finally see a Diego who is learning to set healthier limits for himself in s3. (And honestly I’m so proud of him for it.)

some other symptoms I didn’t list in my first paragraph:

difficulty controlling emotional responses & impulses:

-fighting Luther at the funeral.

-the fight with Reginald in s2 that ultimately ends up in him getting stabbed for freezing up.

-throwing the conch before the family dinner.

-THE OLGA FOROGA PHONECALL.

-The fact that he smacks Stan upside the head when he doesn’t agree with what the kid is saying or doing.

-Ringing the bell in Hotel Oblivion without reading the sign.

-Diego and Sparrow Ben arguing in each other’s face.

In general he lashes out a lot when when he’s upset. And again, I think a lot of it ties back to getting talked over a lot as a kid because he couldn’t get the words out fast enough so he developed a habit of letting his impulse rule in those moments because the more anger he channels when he’s speaking the more sharply and clearly the words come out and displays of violence ( generally at inanimate objects ) demands that everyone shut up and listen to him.

This isn’t phrased perf because I’m tired but I do think in all these conversations about recognizing coding/hurtful tropes/bad narratives/ect y’all need to like start doing it for the disabled community too we can’t be the only ones who see ableism in media and point it out and I’m not talking about freaking Batman guys. Like learn the coding, learn any disability activism theories, learn what narratives harm us if you can do days of research to accuse every kids cartoon on the planet of q bait you can like spend two minutes online and get that bad guys with facial scars = bad. Like it’s not hard guys

Anyway a short very short list of like the most basic coding and narratives and just really general guidelines guys

Any and yes I mean any #quirky character, comedic relief, or airheaded character is coded to some degree as autistic or adhd for obvious reasons it’s not always good

Genuinely most “stupid” characters are coding with some form of learning disabilities

Characters who have trouble moving, easily tired, often in pain pls give em an aide

Odd, slow, or simple were all words to convey the character as some form of disabled in literature up until frankly now guys they still do it

Literally any fatphobia is ableism

Character talks too much? Fidgets? Has trouble paying attention? My dude that’s adhd

Also like obv autistic/ ocd detective trope here

Literally most non human characters are coded as Nd/ect famously. Spock

Facial scars? Sexy. Visible scarring only on the bad guys? Rancid ableist move on yes this is @ the ww movie

Literally anything that portrays a scarred character as inherently scary or villainous

Evil mental ward patients (yes mental wards have a history and currently are ableist but there’s a difference between a disabled person talking about it and abled people just villainizing the whole thing)

Cures yes almost any cure narratives is bad there’s a thin line with chronically ill characters as a community sims of them obviously do want to be cured but outside of that any narrative with physically disabled people is in fact ableist

Magical disabilities (nuance here)

Pls just learn to let blind characters be blind none of you are Garrett from Quest from Camelot none of you will be Garrett from quest from Camelot pls stop trying

Let us talk about wanting more characters and! Let us be critical of the characters we have. Yes we know Toph exists

Literally when we say x is ableist or y is z coded just listen to us it’s not hard no ones mad at you for not knowing

When physically disabled people are talking you have to listen yes even if you have depression physically disabled people get to talk about physically disabled specific ableism too just as much as you get to talk nd specific ableism

Cr/pple is a physically disabled specific slur don’t use it to explain your depression or your economy

Mentally Ill people aren’t inherently violent if that’s the plot of the story yeah it’s ableist

Mental age is an ableist concept

If your disabled character is #independent because just because you’re disabled you don’t need to rely on anyone? Yeah that’s ableist

Yeah disabled people sometimes do need constant care and help we’re people god

Low independence people are no more childish than any adult

If you’re disabled character can be independent that’s great just don’t insult every other disabled person to do it

Asthma is not just using an inhaler after recess pls just do five minutes of research here

Same with diabetes just like. Five minutes

If you’re confused talk to disabled people ( who are cool w being asked) but remember we are not a monolith and we have different comfort levels ect

Yes we can have s/o’s who in some level take care of us because relationships are about taking care of each other no they aren’t our caregiver (all the time this is when nuance happens) if you’re writing that dynamic just run it by a sensitivity reader literally it’s not hard dhfhdggg I have an aunt who takes care of her husband and an uncle who hired a nurse both these things are common just like. Use nuance. Don’t infantize. Gfhdgdhdgdyf

Dwarfism isn’t a joke neither is gigantism

Unless you’re disabled generally speaking none of it’s a joke honestly

That’s just off the top of my head this isn’t everything or even close but it’s like half of the bare minimum do some research y’all r annoying

Here’s my second survey. I’ve got one more after this.

What do you want for your birthday?

It's not until May so I still have some time to decide.

What’s your favorite flavor of tea?

I'm currently drinking a lot of Lipton's ryokucha with blackberry and pomegranate, although I put sugar-free honey in it too.

What’s your favorite fall drink?

I'm sure I've done this one before, and maybe multiple times. My current fave drink for fall and winter is cocoa.

What’re you going to be for Halloween?

I probably won't do anything for it on that front, but I tend to watch horror flicks. I like to re-watch The Nightmare Before Christmas and fave scary movies like A Nightmare On Elm Street, but I’ll also see new ones.

Do you think you’ve learned a lot and grown a lot in the past year?

I did do some growing in 2017, but January was only filled with a couple illnesses. Then I caught a stomach bug at the first part of February too since my father had a much harsher version.

Are you satisfied with how you’ve spent your year?

2017? Mostly. The latter months were wonderful.

What’s something you’ve learned lately?

I absolutely needed a decent allergy doctor. I'm also in need of re-testing. Since I'm no longer using Medicaid, I can see a decent doctor for that.

I'm in the process of it right now. He's put me on a regiment of a pill and some junk I have to coat my nostrils with three times a day. IDK, I was half-asleep when I went since I was still on the mend from being sick.

Do you have a lot of friends?

Yes, but more so online than off. When I'm offline, I've got a few core friends. I dislike having a bunch in person.

Do you own a yellow scarf?

I have one that's a very light yellow, or else I'd hate it.

Do you own brown shoes?

My Wolverine work shoes are in shades of brown.

Do you own anything leopard print?

Several things, like two purses, two identical mini backpacks, one faux fur vest and more.

Will you buy a cake for your next birthday?

I'd rather not, unless it's a cookie cake.

Are you counting down the days until your birthday right now?

I'm really not.

Are you excited for something currently?

Not right this minute.

If you could change just one thing about your life right now, what would it be?

I wouldn’t be forced to eat three times a day for a pill I’m taking.

What’s your favorite color?

Periwinkle which is a pale and wintry shade of blue and purple. Well, technically they say it’s on the violet spectrum. It just looks more purple to me since violet is its own color.

Have you ever been to a school dance?

I never wanted to go to those as a kid.

Do you make a list of goals at the beginning of each week?

I don't feel the need to do that so often, but I've made some for my year.

Are you artistic?

In some ways, like with music and writing. I'm not that great with visual arts specifically since my visual-spatial skills aren’t that good.

When was that last time you drew a picture in a sketchbook?

Never ago. Well, I’ve copied pictures, but that’s it. My original art of that nature has always been done via computers.

Is there a tree right outside your bedroom window?

My window overlooks the kitchen window with the small walkway to our front door between them.

Is it windy right now where you are?

I don't hear any wind at least.

Is it raining?

It's not raining right now.

What’s something about you that makes you different from everyone else?

My fingerprints mainly. Those are the most unique thing about you. Even your DNA is shared with others. Your fingerprints are entirely unique.

Do you dress the same way as your peers?

I don't pay attention to the way people my age dress. I act older and most of my friends are at least five years older than I am too. However, I realize I’m always dressing younger than my age. I actually look 16-18, though.

Do you talk the same way as your peers?

The way I talk is a generous mix of lingo I've picked up over my lifetime. It doesn’t really match my age directly.

Do you have the same life goals as your friends?

My friend group is really more diverse than that.

Are you having a good day?

My day has been uneventful, but nothing bad has happened.

Is your hair red?

It has red bits, but it's an overall dark brown.

Do you like brownies?

If they're moist and chewy.

Have you ever dressed up as a witch on Halloween?

I haven't, but my parents were too strict for such when I was a kid. It’s not like they were strict in other ways, they just wouldn’t let me dress up as anything outside their religious beliefs.

What’s one color that you never wear because it doesn’t look good on you?

I don't pay any mind to such.

Have you ever been to a masquerade?

I've never wanted to go to one.

Do you eat vegetables?

Some, but I especially like seaweed.

Do you wear leggings?

I only have one pair because they're kind of thick knitted ones, otherwise I'd never wear leggings.

Is there anybody you think is hot over the age of 40?

I definitely think people can look good even when they're older than 40, but I usually don't notice such.

Who's the most inappropriate person you know?

I think it's our next door neighbor, but we rarely see her anymore.

What year in your life do you think you were the least attractive?

I've never felt really unattractive. I’ve mostly been disinterested in such.

Did anything bad happen to you in August?

I don't remember by this point, although I remember specific events more so than timelines.

Who in your phone has a heart after their name?

What was the last movie you watched and with whom?

I rented Batman: Gotham By Gaslight last night and watched it by myself. It had an interesting premise, but the outcome had become obvious to me once I eliminated the other suspects. Still, the movie ended really well.

Is there anything you’re avoiding?

Not really.

If you could have one thing right now, what would it be?

There isn’t anything I really need right this minute.

If your parents searched your room, would they be angry at what they’d find?

I'm 31 although I do live with them since it's either this or assisted living. I've got learning disabilities like dyscalculia so I need help from my mother who acts as my caregiver right now. They don't go through my shit, though!

Do you think anyone has feelings for you?

I know a few guys do right now, but I'm disinterested in love.

Have you given somebody more second chances than you can count?

I actually know how to count. I mean that I only believe the "second chance" mentality should apply to whether or not they're going to stay in your life.

I've given people second, third, fourth chances. It depends on who they are, what they've done, what our relationship really is and how it's been. I tend to give people a lot of chances, but not cheaters.

After breaking up, what’s the worst?

It's not always a terrible thing for me. It might be a decent breakup. I've felt that way before. I've even remained best friends with more than one guy after that. Only one breakup was pretty bad for me.

But sometimes the worst thing can just be feeling a natural low and remembering all the good times along with the breakup itself. I'm not one who dwells on that a long time, though.

Do you think your last ex deserves to die?

I don't feel that way about anyone, but my last ex is a bestie of mine.

Do any girls like the last guy you kissed?

I wouldn't know or care. He's so far in my past.

Are you happier now than you were three months ago?

Maybe a little less now just because I've been sick a lot.

Are things going the way you planned?

I don't plan out my life on that level. I take things as they come.

Have you done anything sexual today?

I haven't done anything sexual in over a decade and I'm good with that.

Is there something you want to say to someone, but you can’t or won’t?

Not really. I don't tend to hold things in since it's unhealthy. I’ll only do that with my father because it’s useless to confront someone like that.

Do you have a second mom?

There will never be anyone who comes close to my real mother.

Do you hate the last boy you were talking to?

The last man I talked to in person was my father and I don't hate him, but he's not that close to me either.

I don't hate anyone really since that's way too obsessive, dedicated and petty. There are just a handful of people I really dislike and plenty of others I disregard altogether since they're not significant to me personally.

So lately we have been fangirling over Shane Burcaw and Hannah Aylward. About 5 years ago, maybe 3, I read Shane’s book, “Laughing at my Nightmare” and I’m not ashamed to say that I had a really big crush on him (and I still have a tiny one)... anyways...

I didn’t have a crush on him, but then again, I didn’t know who he was 5 years ago... aside from the fact the Batgirl read his book.

So anyway, by chance we discovered their Youtube channel, Squirmy and Grubs. And I also discovered their instagram accounts.

We discovered them separately, and then by chance a week ago we were talking about what book we wanted to read together next. I found Shane has another book called, “People Assume My Girlfriend is My Nurse”

and we pieced it together that we had both discovered their channels.

By the way, this is one of those conversations that would have normally taken place in my bathroom.

I don’t know why we’re sharing that

It will make sense once we start explaining why Shane and Hannah are so cool...

So what makes Shane and Hannah so awesome is that they are in an interabled relationship. As a person with a disability, it’s really awesome to see that they are breaking down so many stereotypes with people with different abilities and needs.

They are really just a normal couple... But an awesome, very entertaining normal couple.

I would also like to point out though, that not every person in an interabled relationship is as fortunate to have a partner that is willing to do the majority of their care, without additional support workers. And not all physical care for people with disabilities can be done by one person without any additional equipment.

I like to consider myself in an interabled relationship, even though “Batman” (that’s what we’ll call him for now) has CP. His CP has it’s own challenges but he doesn’t require a wheelchair.

However, Batman and I do not want him to be responsible for my personal care.

Here’s a question, would you automatically assume she was his nurse? Because people have assumed you were my mom...

What? I feel like they probably assumed we were sisters... Okay, but people do make assumptions. Or I’ve been out with my friends and people have assumed they are my workers... and someone assumed Batman was my brother.

No. I’ve seen far too many of their YouTube videos. I’d probably go ask for an autograph... Unfortunately, I feel like people make assumptions all the time. I would like to think I wouldn't make that assumption, but I can’t say it wouldn’t cross my mind. I’m sure if you spent time observing them like a creeper that you’d see the dynamic of their relationship would be as a couple vs a caregiver type relationship. How about you?

I’d like to say no, because I’ve had people make assumptions about me. And I’ve also witnessed people make assumptions about Batman. Like we went out this summer and I’m pretty sure someone thought he was drunk, cause they told him to watch where he was going and slow down. Just something to think about...

And go watch them on YouTube! They are really funny!

You won’t regret it! But be sure you’ve got time, because you’ll binge watch them like all their other followers.

Bruce from off panel comments, “Ah, much better with the extra light. Thank you, Alfred.” Alfred looks over and dryly replies, “You know, anyone else would be doing pretty well just to be awake”

Bruce is shown to be in an electric hospital bed and has his head wrapped in bloodstained bandages, where little tufts of black hair stick out from it. He has a neck brace on and his arm is wrapped. There's a large bandage placed on his lower face, where his stubble is also overgrown due to neglecting his personal grooming in favour of focusing on Batman related duties. The revealed room is shown to be cluttered with several large, medical machines and carts full of medical supplies — which includes sponges, oxygen tanks and masks, pain relievers, syringes, bandages, and (inexplicably) a baster. Bruce sits up in bed and is chewing at the end of a pen as he looks down at a notepad and several papers that's on an overbed table.

Alfred brings him breakfast on a tray as he remarks, “I step out for twenty minutes and you're not only awake, you're already scribbling notes. Might I impose on you to set those aside long enough for some food, if not some actual rest?” Bruce instead asks where's the coffee, to which Alfred responds, “Actually, Sir, I think the last thing your overtaxed system needs right now is more stimulant.” Bruce challenges him, “‘Overtaxed’? Is that your professional opinion?” Alfred wryly replies, “As the one who found you riddled with holes last night, I can only speculate as to their cause. However... having discounted the possibility of suicidal intention, or gross incompetence, on your part...” Bruce immediately accuses, “You think I'm trying to do more than I can actually manage.” His butler calmly justifies, “Unless you've developed some new ability that you are hiding from me, I suspect you cannot be everywhere at once.”

In the original line art, there's two plushies (a round bunny and a bat) drawn amongst all the medical supplies. Sadly, it wasn't included in the publicized version.
