I know there has probably been a thousand iterations of one of us promoting our project but we are officially over 50% done with the chapters of our Sansukh project!
I am only a small portion of the chapters and the team of podficcers working on this project is INCREDIBLE. If you're a fan of Sansukh or just LOTR in general, I highly recommend checking us out. We've officially posted more of the fic than any other podfic before us has and we'll be taking it until the very end.

Propaganda and Info under the cut
Good On You
Fandom: The Owl House
Artist: Oh Geeez
Propaganda: "The Huntlow Song, but also the song for every ship that's between The Tough OneTM and the person that caresses their cheek and tells them they can stop now, that for all that they appreciate how strong the person is, and how brave they've been and how far they've gotten, they don't need to be afraid of leaning on the very people that have been leaning on them. that at least with the two of them, that person will always have a shoulder to cry on with them." -submitter
Light On The Horizon
Fandom: Tolkien-verse
Artist: Determamfidd
Propaganda: "Sansukh is an extremely popular and well written fanfiction for the general tolkien universe, it was extremely popular and influential in the hobbit/lotr fandom and this song was, in the story composed for the marriage of Gimli and Legolas, and the writer full stop composed it in real life and it's fucking BEAUTIFUL, the heavenly chorus, the harmonizing of Khuzdul and Sindarin lines as they all meet into a huge crescendo comparing the unlikely relationship to a light on the horizon and hope for tomorrow. Like, fucking LISTEN to it man- that's propaganda in and of itself" -submitter

The friendly @galadrielspeaks asked if I can show how to order the Sansûkh books from Lulu Xpress, so here's a walkthrough video!
The "Foil Stamp Text" is the text that is embossed into the spine of the linen cover, under the paper wrap. The linen colour choices here are selected to match the wrap cover. (Part One is Navy Blue, Part Two is Red, Part Three is Forest - side note when @runawaymarbles and I were discussing cover colours, we picked the first for Thorin/Durin's folk/the Halls of Mandos, the second for Gimli/Dáin/Mahal, and the third for Legolas/the Shire-folk/Yavanna and her realm - this symbolism is also reflected on the cover art.)
I've had these book now since the spring, and I can't tell you how lovely it is to have them on the shelf and on hand. Hope you enjoy them, all!

✏️ What is your fave fic from another writer?
✏️ What is your fave fic from another writer?
My favorite? I have a lot of fics I love, many of which I've already talked about in one post or another, so let's see if I can come up with a recent fave I haven't talked much about...
I guess I'd have to go with Talking In Her Sleep and its sequel, When In Rome (by @determamfidd), which have both been living in my brain rent-free since I first read them several months back.
They're Hiccstrid-centric post-canon How to Train Your Dragon fics that were posted back in early 2011, before any of the shows or sequel films came out, so the only canon they use is the first film (along with some of the early bonus material). (Which means, among other things, that all of the dragons (besides Toothless) have different names.) The writer also borrows a few small bits of worldbuilding from the original Cressida Cowell novels, particularly in When In Rome.
They're very, very good, and I cannot recommend them highly enough: the plots are believable and exciting, the characterization is excellent, and the writing and imagery is superb. (I also suspect that the writer may have been whacked in the head a few times with the Dodgeball of Prophecy-- I don't want to spoil too much, but there are several plot points that eerily line up and/or parallel with some of the stuff that actually did happen in the later movies.)
Ask me about my writing!

Video
So. Sansûkh. Indeed Sansukh Week 2022. Thank you  @fishfingersandscarves for prompting me to actually finally record this damn song, edit and post it!
Day 7 of Sansukh Week, celebrating a year since the fanfic was completed, is about endings. This song is about the ending of the fanfic, and the emotions it gave me. I wrote it whilst I was ill with COVID, about a week or two after Sansukh finished. I then forgot about it. Did some editing. Forgot about it some more. Asked @oakwyrm @hobbitsoupbowl and @fishfingersandscarves if I could use their art, they graciously said yes, I forgot about it. Now it is here!!!
This video is a) an emotional retelling of a weird emotional; b) a massive thank you to @determamfidd; c) a joke that I mainly did because I thought of the last line and it made me giggle.
I’ll reblog with links to the original art and the backing track I used! Video description under the cut
Video description: video of a series of images, set to illustrate a song. The song is “Into the West” from The Return of the King, with some altered words, sung by an alto voice over a kareoke backing track.
Lyric “Hope fades into the world of night”
Image: Living in 2021 like...
Lyric “Through shadows falling”

Quote
“The world is very big and full of wonderful things, Frodo-lad, and we are very small. But small can make a big difference, I have found.”
Bilbo to Frodo (chp. 7)
Sansûkh by determamfidd (AO3) The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit – Teen/Mature – Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield, Gimli/Legolas Greenleaf #Canon Add-on #Angst #Slow Build #Happy Ending #Dead Peanut Gallery #Thorin POV #Neurodiversity #Epic
From a Hobbitkink prompt:
The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors.
The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin’s line with bright red hair.
(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).
(Bagginshield, Gimli/Legolas) In which recovery takes time, the dead members of the Company take to watching Gimli as though he’s a soap opera, the living struggle with being left behind, Legolas is confused, Khuzdul is abused, and Thorin is four feet and ten inches of guilt and anger.

thinking again about these two quotes:
‘The Lord of Rivendell appeared torn between total joy and terrible sorrow, and his smile trembled as his daughter fell into the arms of the man she loved.
...“If I told the tale of all that Lord Elrond has lost, then the very air would weep. He is unused to joy without sorrow. But he will reach for joy nevertheless.”’
-from sansûkh by @determamfidd
‘... All Melian’s joy was touched with sorrow, and all her sorrow with joy, and it had been that way from the moment she drew on flesh like a gown and took Elu Thingol’s hand under the wheeling stars. For her Thingol had always been falling in marvelling love with her, all their long years together in the Thousand Caves, and he had always been at the same time being torn apart by dwarvish swords on his own treasury floor. She had always known.’
-from into the old abyss by @arrivisting
and i just— scream.
because these lines only make sense within the context of an immortal life where death and loss is only a very faint thought, but humanity has dealt with love and loss intertwined since the day we were born. it’s always been this way. it will always be this way.

Tolkien Webcomic Recommendations!
I know people here follow me for my webcomic adaptation of the Hobbit. So I thought I’d share recommendations for my favorite similar Tolkien comic projects, in case people are looking for other Tolkien webcomics to read! :D
My recs will be mainly Tolkien comics that adapt portions of the original books, just with their own unique spin on them.
1. Sam and Frodo Comics, by Molly Knox Ostertag
Tumblr media
Ostertag is probably the most well known artist on this list! She is a professional graphic novel artist who does gorgeous adaptations of scenes from Lord of the Rings, read through a queer lens, in order to tell the story of Frodo and Sam’s love for each other. This is mixed in with comics based on her own Tolkien-inspired writing. I’m focusing on comics in this rec list, but I’ll add that Ostertag has also written a lot of engaging prose fanfic with illustrations.
“Sam and Frodo Comics”
“In All the Ways There Were” (illustrated prose fanfic adaptation)
2.Lord of the Rings Book Canon Comics, by @yambits
Tumblr media
Yambits does beautiful adaptations of scenes from the original lord of the rings books that do not appear in the New Line Cinema films, hewing very close to the original prose, and focusing on the love between Frodo and Sam. I especially love the way they depict the magical temptation of the Ring.
“Ithilien,” an adaptation of Frodo & Sam’s encounter with Faramir
“In the Lair,” an adaptation of Sam & Frodo journeying together into Shelob’s lair
“The Tower,” an adaptation of Sam journeying to the tower of Cirith Ungol to rescue Frodo
“Escape from the Tower,” an adaptation of Sam and Frodo leaving Cirith Ungol to journey into Mordor
The Ringbearers, a comic about the One Ring reflecting on the resilience of hobbits
3. Sansukh the Webcomic, by @fishfingersandscarves and @determamfidd
Tumblr media
Sansukh is a well-loved Bagginshield fanfiction that is now getting a webcomic adaptation co-created by the original author. The premise is that after his death, Thorin Oakenshield is not able to speak to his surviving loved ones, but can influence them in subtle ways; he uses this power to help inspire Gimli to join the Fellowship of the Ring and protect Bilbo’s nephew. From there the fic becomes an “adaptation” of Lord of the Rings, retelling the trilogy through its new lens until the very end.
This is a bit of an outlier on this list because it’s an adaptation of a fanfic that’s an adaptation of the books, rather than an adaptation of the book. However, if you’re into the Hobbit fandom/Bagginshield, I recommend checking it out! It’s also one of the few comics on this list that is currently updating. :)

Original fanfic the comic is based on
4. The Ainulindalae from the Silmarillion, by Evan Palmer Comics
Tumblr media Tumblr media
People who know me, know that I’m *usually* not a big Silmarillion person. However!
Comic artist Evan Palmer did a gorgeous adaptation of the Ainulindale. This section of the Silmarillion describes the elven myth of creation, the ancient years where the world was created through a divine magical song. Palmer’s Fantasia-inspired expressive watercolor art really helps bring this section of the story to life!
Full comic
5.The 1989 Hobbit Comic adaptation, by Chuck Dixon and David T Wenzel
Tumblr media
This is another outlier because it’s a physical comic book, rather than a webcomic- and unlike all the other recs this is an “official” adaptation produced by an actual publishing company rather than a zero-budget work made by an indie creator working alone/with a partner. I’m unsure if it can be found online.
It’s an adaptation of the Hobbit that hews extremely close to the original book, making practically no changes at all. It has very gorgeous watercolor illustrations! ( It’s been a big inspiration for me on my own little comic adaptation of the hobbit shsjd.) This is also the only comic on the list I’ll offer critique of, because it’s the only one made by an actual company with a budget— so I’ll say that because of page limits imposed on the comic many of the pages can feel overcrowded with prose, and emotional beats/comedy beats sometimes aren’t given the time to properly land. At times it feels less like a comic adaptation and more like reading the original prose of the Hobbit accompanied by some very beautiful illustrations. But if that’s what you’re into it’s great!
It’s a fun well-illustrated read that I recommend. I’m not sure where people can find copies; I stumbled across it in my library, so they’re definitely still around.
If anyone has additional tolkien comic recommendations, especially ones that can be found easily online, feel free to add them to this list! : D

Sansûkh, a 577k-word fic retelling Lord of the Rings from the point of view of Thorin and the Dead Dwarf Peanut Gallery, has the most hits, kudos, comments, and bookmarks of any LotR fanfic on Archive of our Own. (It also has the most hits, comments, and bookmarks for the Hobbit, but not kudos; that honor goes to A Shot in the Dark if you want to ruin your sleep cycle for a couple days.)
Author determamfidd began writing the fic in June of 2013, and finally wrapped up the main story almost exactly eight years later in 2021. So if you ever dipped your toes in the world of Hobbit/LotR fanfic (and weren't against the fic's main pairings of Thorin/Bilbo and Legolas/Gimli), odds are pretty good you read at least a chapter or two.
So now I'm curious. Have you read Sansûkh? Would you like an excuse to talk about it? Did you barely sleep until you'd finally read every word? Did Thorin realizing why he was adding pretty flower patterns to Hobbit-sized pans make you need to stop and take a minute? Then this poll's for you!
