house md is in a way extremely groundbreaking and no show has gotten even close to what it managed to do. house is a disabled character who stays disabled for the whole series and yes he is a flawed and damaged person and his bad actions are in line with his character and dealing with chronic pain. he changes even though he is adamant for the whole show that people don’t change. house becomes self sacrificing and learns to love in his own flawed way. he goes to therapy and seeks help and support and he is 100% not the same person he started out the series as. there are canon queer characters that aren’t only treated as jokes and have actual three dimensional character arcs. there are unhealthy relationships and healthy relationships. there is loss but it’s not treated as shock value. actions have consequences. characters stay and go. house md is just as real as it is outlandish at times. it skirts the line with absurdity and realism. it’s beautiful and tragic and at it’s core it is a story of love and becoming a better person despite your trauma and flaws. it doesn’t treat house’s trauma and disability as an excuse for his actions but it’s why he is who he is. and despite all of this, house is happy at the end of the show even though the one person he truly loves, his male best friend, is dying. they could have gone the conventional route and gave wilson a female love interest who is actually good for him at the end of the show and yet they choose to have him run away to spend his final days alive with house. and this show ended before gay marriage was legalized. oh my god.

Random observation while listening to the FF9 OST. The track Eternal Harvest that plays over that scene of Freya joining the Cleyrans in their protection ritual is absolutely gorgeous, but I wish my memory of it wasn’t that awkwardly mocap-ed scene and was a cinematic instead. It had the potential to be a lot more powerful if given the weightiness of a cinematic, and ofc is Freya had been more fleshed out instead of having her arc come to a dead stop in the middle of the 3rd disc.
Freya and Garnet are both great conduits to explore the devastation that Kuja left in his wake on a personal level. But while Garnet is through the eyes of a young woman struggling as a leader against such incredible odds, Freya had the potential to be a great exploration of the more personal and cultural aspect of that destruction. Her people are already appeared to be a somewhat disliked minority, which is what made them an easy first target for Brahne compared to her in-laws in Lindblum. And unlike Alexandria and Lindblum where despite their state, it’s implied that the kingdoms are still fit to rebuild, the Burmecians are really fucked over. Their country was the first to be attacked and therefore didn’t have time to prepare, and then the other Burmecian state of Cleyra where most of the refugees fled to was DISINTEGRATED.
Like Freya might be the character with the most baggage to explore. After witnessing the ruins of Burmecia she comes to this ancient bastion of her people, and despite not fully respecting their distinct way of life, she partakes in their ritual, hoping it will be able to protect the last of them. And then not even an hour later, right from under her that citadel is literally wiped off the face of the earth. It’s haunting to think about, and I deeply wish it could have been explored beyond just a bit of her grieving before launching into more shenanigans.
Not that her being forced to so quickly move on isn’t powerful in itself, but I wish there was more EMPHASIS. Emphasis that could have come from a beautifully directed cinematic of that ritual she performed in vain. Able to visually represent that fragile, majestic hope the track accompanying it conveys.

Honestly as much as I enjoyed TFA you could tell it wasn’t as coherent (as tlj or kenobi).
Poe’s “arc” was none existent and the way they brought him back into the narrative in TFA was lazy.
All of Leia’s scenes which would have fleshed out the universe were placed into the deleted scenes.
They got rid of the moments with Han in the Falcon and Ben in the Falcon too.
👌 it felt like it was so close to being extravagantly written but they played it too safe for the scenes outside of reylo and Finns intro.
Completely agree!
Yep Poe's sole purpose originally was to help Finn escape, and then he was supposed to die. But they liked Oscar so much they brought him back and clearly didn’t have an arc written for him. They were just like oh hey guess what he’s actually alive as a kind of exciting standalone moment.
And also keeping Poe alive took screen time away from Finn. Like how many times have we seen an arrogant hotshot pilot in SW? But a stormtrooper defecting, that is something we’ve never seen before. Finn’s introduction is great! But after that he isn’t really developed much at all.
Agreed about Leia, wish they’d kept those scenes in to help flesh out this time period some more.
Not showing Ben in the Falcon is one of the biggest crimes of the trilogy. And they should have kept the scene of Han with his dice considering how symbolic they are in TLJ and Solo.
The movie is basically a rehash of ANH, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, honouring what came before. But I agree, it was so close to being incredible but they were just too afraid to stray too far from the original formula.
But the setup for Reylo is great. As is Han’s death, which is the catalyst for Ben’s redemption - one of the the most consistent through lines of the trilogy.
But all that being said, I do think the direction TLJ takes things improves upon the movie. And cause it was the beginning and still finding its footing, the hollowness and inconsistencies don’t bother me too much cause they were addressed in the next movie. If you take a lot of things in TFA at face value it can ring a little hollow, but TLJ gives it more meaning.
Similarly with the Kenobi series, it gives more meaning to things that came before and things that come after. Also it has the benefit of having a singular vision and the same director for the whole series.

the good thing about making icons again is it refreshes my memory of how I read VK for the first time. the bad thing about making icons is it makes me wistful about how promising it was in the beginning and reminds me of what happens later on
