warnings: mentions of blood, injuries, weapons, kinda graphic violence, bumjoong is a plot point, no romance joong and mc develop an almost sibling bond trying to find bumjoong

Hongjoong hates losing.

You know this even before you personally met the headstrong captain thanks to his brother. You don’t cross paths by chance, but by the consequence of your amateur pickpocket skills.

Bumjoong allows you to painstakingly slit open his leather coin pouch as he stands idly by a fruit stand, quietly smirking at the way your desperate hands try to collect as much gold and silver pieces in two handfuls. Only when the coins start to flood past your outstretched hands and clatter obnoxiously to the ground do you sprint away from the mildly amused man.

Now that you think back to it, it was the way you haphazardly zipped through the very well known path to the underground city that ratted you out in the end. Unsurprisingly, Bumjoong is there at the hidden entrance when you reach it.

You remember trying to break free from his hold as he raised you like a scolding mother cat would with its child. He was smiling the entire time, not in the way that would send shivers down your spine and let you fear for your life, but in fondness of all things.

You scowl at him when he begins tutting, and he bursts in laughter when you stick your tongue out menacingly. The coins you “stole” from him are scattered under your defeated form now.

“You’re so much like my little brother.”

That’s the first time you met Hongjoong.

You meet Hongjoong a lot more after the first.

Hongjoong hates receiving help when he isn’t asking for it.

Again, something you learn from Bumjoong when you found yourself stuck in hand-to-hand combat with some drunk at the local tavern. Your lip is split and you’re pretty sure the liquid dripping from your eyebrow is not sweat by its metallic taste. Your opponent is doubled down, clutching his gut, he’s not faring any better than you with the bruise forming around his left eye and the way he’s heaving to breathe properly.

Your knuckles throb from the reckless punches you’ve thrown, knees buckling from the adrenaline leaving your system, but you stubbornly keep yourself on your toes in case he could strike again. Raising a shaking fist, you aim for the side of the man’s head before another hand holds you back.

“That’s enough,” Bumjoong’s prim and neatly pressed navy uniform contrasts heavily with your worn out attire. “You’ve done enough damage, kid. To the both of you.”

You pry your arm from his grip, wiping the blood trickling by your eye with the back of your hand. “I don’t need your help, Bumjoong.”

He sighs. “Alright,” he relents, and stands to the side.

This time he doesn’t give you a scolding after you land a final blow (although admittedly much weaker than you’d wish), he knows you know what the consequences of your actions are. The walk home is silent, save from the jingling keys strapped securely on his belt.

“You patronize me too much for someone in the navy.”

He snorts, “I’m your big brother first before a government servant, kid.”

“I’m not your brother.” You look at him perplexed. How did this guy manage to pass the mandatory government background check with you hanging around him for most of your teenage life anyway? “And I’m pretty sure that’s not how that works.”

Bumjoong stops in his tracks to look at you. His gaze isn’t gentle, rather it burns with the trails of a promise. “I’ll protect you for as long as I can.”

You look away, unable to hold the intense eye contact. “I can protect myself.”

“At least try to learn how to use a dagger or two,” he says and continues walking ahead.

Twin daggers are the last thing Bumjoong leaves in your possession before he disappears out of your life.

With nothing but a couple of blades and a bundle of clothes to your name, you wander near the docks just as you had before you met Bumjoong. Pickpocketing the captains and crewmen of the merchant ships proved to be a task similar to child’s play now that you’ve developed better skills under him.

You guess you have that to thank him.

Soon enough you had made a name for yourself as a seasoned thief. And with the title along came the very real danger looming over your head, hence why you kept acquaintances and allies at a distance. Adapting a nomadic lifestyle helped, but the more you traveled from town to town, the more you came to realize you would always end up in towns along the coast. Almost as if your subconscious was telling you something was waiting across the reef.

You end up thinking about what Hongjoong would do in your situation.

Hongjoong hates making empty promises.

But who’s to say Hongjoong was actually a real person, for all you know Bumjoong was making him up for you to empathize with him.

He tells you this himself the very night you meet him in person. At a tavern of all places.

You slip up when you draw one of your daggers to openly threaten him in front of his entire crew at the most lawless coastside town you’ve ever set foot to. “You’re the famous Hongjoong, huh?”

There’s a twinkle in his eye when his gaze lands on the hilt of your blade. You brush it aside as fascination, but deep inside you have a sneaking feeling he recognizes it. You let the tip lift his chin for him to look at you instead. “Depends who’s asking, sweetheart.”

“Cut the bullshit, pirate.” Retracting your dagger, you contemplate on telling him the full truth about Bumjoong’s disappearance. The words leave your mouth before you have the willpower to filter them out. “The navy has your brother.”

This takes Hongjoong aback. He knew his brother always wanted to be a nameless bounty hunter, but the navy? “I’m taking he took you under his wing or something?”

You scoffed, “More or less. It doesn’t matter. I need to find him.”

“And you think I’d go out of my way to assist you, thief?”

“Geez, he wasn’t lying when he said you’re stubborn.”

“Promised he’d protect you, didn’t he?” He stares into his beverage, eyes glazed over with something you can’t quite put your finger on. “Don’t you just hate being offered empty promises?”

You don’t answer. You don’t have an answer. All you knew was that Bumjoong was taken against his will and that something tells you he couldn’t be reached by traveling on land.

Hongjoong gets up from the booth, pint still half-full discarded on the table in front of you. “Welcome aboard, thief.”

More than anything, Hongjoong hates liars.

Hongjoong’s rapier has always stayed sheathed in the sheath-cane hybrid he customized himself. You’ve seen the crew spar with him along the main deck during the fortnights away from shorelines, but never with the actual blade he carried around.

Which is why you don’t immediately recognize the tip of the blade that rested threateningly beneath your chin.

The Aurora sits docked among smaller fishermen’s ships on some island away from authorities, a waning crescent moon taunts your vision as you lay leisurely on the sterncastle deck. The crew unanimously elected you as the watchdog for tonight while they drink their asses away at the nearest tavern, and you are left with no choice but to sharpen your daggers in solitude on the deck.

A short yelp leaves you when the thin blade enters your vision, mostly out of confusion rather than fear. The daggers you’ve been sharpening discarded at your side when you recognize your captain’s heavy boots. How did you not hear him coming with those on?

“Some pickpocket you are with those reflexes.” Hongjoong disengages, his tone almost harsh.

He turns his back on you when you stand, back leaving the stability of the mast. “You’re upset.” It’s evident, it always has been. Hongjoong is terrible at masking his displeasure and it’s no different now that it’s only the two of you on the ship.

He takes a few steps forward before he leans on the railings, rapier and sheath-cane dangling over the calm waves in his grip. A shaky breath and a small chuckle nearly disappears into the sea breeze but you pick up on them and deduce he’s somewhat inebriated. “Captain, if you wish to talk-”

“I know what you did to my brother.”

He turns again, now looking at you, looking conflicted for a split second before his glare turns hostile. Chin raised, he tries to conceal the hurt by being intimidating. It almost works. “How dare you walk up to my ship with his blood on your hands?”

“What?”

The question hangs unanswered between you two, nothing has made any sense since Hongjoong joined you tonight. You shift in place, discreetly trying to pick up your daggers in case he jumps you.

“It took me a while, but now I remember. Those daggers,” a step forward, “are a gift from the ocean, you see.”

You flinch, stepping on the handles of your blades as he inches closer. “It keeps the blood of its previous owner in the hilt, it spills right through the fuller when they pass. Explains the pretty scarlet you got there.”

What was he on about?

“That night, during the raid.” The corner of his mouth tilts up in a sarcastic smirk, a challenging brow rises when he finishes. “That was you.”

If you crouch to pick up your weapon now he could freely strike you, so you opt to stay in place.

“You killed Bumjoong.”

You laugh. He can’t be serious, right? Does he really think you would actually kill the closest thing to a brother you had? And what was all that talk about daggers as gifts from the ocean? Guard down, you crouch and finally pick up your twin daggers. “Yeah, sure and Aurora is a sea merchant’s boat. Where did you even get that from-”

Slash.

“Shit!” You cradle the wound forming on your forearm. Hongjoong’s blade is under your throat again, this time you see his muscles tensing to land another strike. You freeze. “I didn’t kill your brother!”

Another swish of his wrist and a cut appears on your cheek. One look into his hooded eyes tells you he’s dead serious.

“Get off my ship,” he growls, gripping the hilt of his blade tighter as if his body and mind were playing opposing sides to the order.

You’re shaking when you stand. His rapier follows. “Never show your face around me again.”

You scrabble off the deck and down the gangplank into the nearest establishment.

I mean, as a writer, I obviously don't want you to swear off fanfiction lol, BUT I get it. You've gotta do what's best for you!

Phantasmagoria is my first 3-part fic, so Part III is currently being written, and it will feature an epilogue (y'all aren't prepared, I just KNOW it). It will probably be about as long as the other two parts (bringing the grand total word count to around 35k words).

To answer your question about how long it takes me to write -- it really depends, lol. I write in short bursts (usually when I have a few minutes), and write on my phone. It depends on what I'm writing, too. For example, I wrote Veneration in 20 minutes while I was at the starbucks drive-thru. I wrote Part 2 of Tell Me to Stop (Kyojuro) in about 2-3 days (that was 16.5k words).

I've had blurbs written for Phantasmagoria since June (well before I announced it), BUT I spent about 6 hours this past weekend filling in the gaps. Part II was probably the part I had the most content already written for. I could probably have done it from scratch in about the same amount of time, if I sat down and wasn't interrupted. Part 3 is arguably the one I've had the least amount completed, and right now, it's sitting at about 5k words, and I would say I'm only halfway done, if that.

However, for me, banging out a 10k+ word fic in a day is child's play -- BUT that's because I'm in a profession where 90% of my job is writing, and writing fast. I've churned out full, 25-page legal briefs in a matter of hours, with full citations. In college, I wrote a 30-40 page research/policy paper a week. Same in law school. It's just second nature to me at this point.

He lay like a filthy leech, exhausted with his repletion. I shuddered as I bent over to touch him, and every sense in me revolted at the contact; but I had to search, or I was lost. The coming night might see my own body a banquet in a similar way to those horrid three. I felt all over the body, but no sign could I find of the key. Then I stopped and looked at the Count. There was a mocking smile on the bloated face which seemed to drive me mad. This was the being I was helping to transfer to London, where, perhaps, for centuries to come he might, amongst its teeming millions, satiate his lust for blood, and create a new and ever-widening circle of semi-demons to batten on the helpless. The very thought drove me mad. A terrible desire came upon me to rid the world of such a monster. There was no lethal weapon at hand, but I seized a shovel which the workmen had been using to fill the cases, and lifting it high, struck, with the edge downward, at the hateful face. But as I did so the head turned, and the eyes fell full upon me, with all their blaze of basilisk horror. The sight seemed to paralyse me, and the shovel turned in my hand and glanced from the face, merely making a deep gash above the forehead. The shovel fell from my hand across the box, and as I pulled it away the flange of the blade caught the edge of the lid which fell over again, and hid the horrid thing from my sight. The last glimpse I had was of the bloated face, blood-stained and fixed with a grin of malice which would have held its own in the nethermost hell.

Smoke clears away after a five-gun salvo from Turrets 3 and 4 of USS NEVADA (BB-36) at Jaluit Atoll, Marshall Islands. "The primary target was the island [Japanese] command post, a well fortified, bomb proof shelter. The NEVADA's big guns chipped away and completely demolished the objective."

"Shortly after leaving Oahu, the Skipper passed the word to all hands that the destination of the ship was Jaluit, a Jap stronghold in the Marshalls, and after giving the [Japanese] our respects, by the 14-inch salvo method, we would continue on to Saipan.

Early on the morning of June 18, 1945, NEVADA, [USS MURRAY (DD-576) and USS TAYLOR (DD-468)] arrived off Emidj Island. Shortly thereafter a Marine air group came over, making a perfect strike with no loss of planes or personnel. The bombardment force then moved into 9,000 yards and commenced firing. The first and primary tar get was quickly ranged and the chopping away process began. I wish everyone a happy New Year and happy holidays!

Unfortunately, like last year, I didn't have the exact template with my drawings this year either, so I'll post through this. Unlike 2021, during 2022 I improved my drawing methods a bit, and also opened a new blog where I mostly post my drawings and you can see them here: https://www.tumblr.com/ducktoonsfanart

Yes, I mostly drew related to Donald Duck and the Duckverse, but especially in November I also drew other franchises, mostly from Looney Tunes and Tiny Toons. Yes, this year I managed in all 12 months to draw at least one drawing in one month. Yes, there were ups and downs for me, but overall, the results were solid. Yes, although I mostly draw Quack Pack, I've certainly drawn related to Donald Duck comics, Darkwing Duck and the Three Caballeros. I hope to focus more on not only the Donald Duck franchise this year, but the others as well. I'm hoping to get over 100 followers on my side blog and hit 500 followers on this one. Rumor-tracking anon here. I feel like I should make a side-tumblr with the name.

So many many apologies in advance for another long one. This one is incredibly nuanced because there are a lot of moving pieces and it does sound tinhatty but I PROMISE there's a point.

TL;DR - I need People Anon's help in trying to figure out the timing of the interview and the photoshoot if Kashner was filing his story around 8/2/17. I'm totally okay with extrapolating if she can only answer/give context using People's weekly format. My questions:

1) How long before a monthly magazine is published does the book close? 2) How long before the book closes are the articles and photographs due to be filed? 3) How far in advance of a publication's release are the advance copies/previews done?

The two three rumors I am working on are:

Harry proposed a very long time before they announced the engagement.

They kept the engagement a secret for a long time for a specific reason.

Something happened that caused the palace and Harry to "let" Meghan stay after the VF interview when in the past, Harry notoriously cut friends and girls out if they talked to the press.

And the Big Question is: when exactly did Harry propose?

So now the verrrrrrry long version. (feel free to put a cut here!)

Bower's VF excerpt says:

After Harry proposed, they discussed announcing the engagement when The Queen returned from her summer in Balmoral.

They were engaged when Meghan did the VF interview.

VF sent a preview copy when Meghan and Harry were in Botswana for her birthday, which Meghan saw after returning home.

The pictures accompanying the VF article were taken in London.

Meghan, Harry, and the Palace were angry that the VF story was about Harry. (Meghan b/c she wanted the focus to be her philanthropy, Harry b/c he didn't want to be in the article, and the Palace because she existed.)

From internet sleuthing -- all dates 2017 unless noted otherwise and I'm using American date convention (mm/dd).

Meghan shut her social media down in April 2017. We know she thrived on social media so she wouldn't have shut it down without something definite and concrete being given to her in return.

Meghan was papped with Harry in May 2017 - early May at polo and mid-May around Pippa's wedding.

Meghan did not attend Wimbledon 2017. (Serena wasn't playing so of course Meghan wasn't going to waste her time.) So she was not papped in London in late June/early July.

Per the Court Circular, Harry's summer holiday started 7/29. We know he was back in London by 8/29 as he attended the Diana Sunken Garden thing on 8/30.

Per the Court Circular, The Queen was in Balmoral from 8/7 to 10/10 so Harry and Meghan weren't planning to tell anyone they were engaged until at least 10/11.

Meghan's birthday is August 4. Meghan and Harry were papped at the airport in Botswana on 8/4 and her PR said there was a birthday party for her that night. We can assume Meghan flew into London around 7/28, when Harry took off for the summer.

Suits Season 7 announced filming dates of 4/4 - 11/15. Production actually wrapped on 11/23. The last pictures of Meghan on the Suits set were from 11/11. Meghan's stand-in tweeted on 11/17 and it seems to be a goodbye/thank you tweet, suggesting that 11/17 was her last day, meaning no more scenes involving Rachel Zane.

Suits Season 7 was split into half-seasons, with the first half airing in summer 2017 (7/12 - 9/13) and the second half airing in spring 2018 (3/28/18 - 4/25/18). This suggests that the production took a break in the summer for the cast to do PR for the premiere.

Members of Suits started doing PR for the new season in June 2017 with the ATX Festival. Meghan is seen in set photos taken 7/12 to celebrate filming Suits' 100th episode that Sarah Rafferty posted on IG.

On 11/20, Meghan moved to London after being spotted in the London airport and after movers were seen at her Toronto house.

The engagement was announced on 11/27.

So all of this to say I think the VF photoshoot was at the end of July, probably no later than 7/28 since Harry usually didn't work when she's visiting. Since Kashner (the VF writer) ended his story by saying Meghan texted him right before he was filing that she would be unreachable and a couple days later were the Botswana airport pics, that suggests he was probably filing the story around 8/4.

If Kashner filed on 8/4, then it was probably after a few weeks for VF to fact-check her, a week or two to write the story and turn in a draft for fact-checking, and a day or so for the interview. That puts the interview happening in early July, or at least sometime before July 12 when we know definitively she was still in Toronto on the Suits set. Which means that the photoshoot was either at the end of July when she was flying in ahead of the Botswana trip or in early/mid-May when she was papped at polo or Pippa's wedding. The latter sounds like it might be too early in the process since if the interview was early July, then they were probably negotiating the article in June with the offer being made late May/early June. (People Anon, help! Does this timeline sound reasonable? Is this the process?)

And if Bower's tea that they were engaged before she did the VF interview is true, then the evidence is indicating they actually got engaged in April or May. (Of course, it's also entirely possible there were other secret trips to London in the intervening time but when you look at Meghan's PR cycle, which always had a pap walk or a story about her being in London with Harry every 3-4 weeks like clockwork and there are no new stories between Pippa's wedding and August, it does seem unlikely.)

We know from their engagement interview that the proposal was very spur-of-the-moment, unexpected, and Harry had been unprepared. To me this sounds like Harry didn't have a ring for her. He just got caught up in the emotions of seeing her again and proposed, sans ring. Was that May? Maybe. Was that July? Maybe. Definitely wasn't November when she moved to London like their PR's been claiming since 2017. Definitely wasn't September or October like maybe they told friends, if they told people they were waiting till The Queen came back from Balmoral. Maybe Harry presented her with the ring around that time to make it official and that's their story, they're sticking to it, but it doesn't jibe with Bower's findings nor basic internet sleuthing.

(In other words, shenanigans afoot since the very beginning as everyone rightly suspected.)

So if they were secretly engaged when she did the VF interview, that means the proposal or the discussion to marry was in the late spring. And if Harry did propose in the late spring/mid-summer like the evidence shows (rather than the autumn like they claim), then why did they wait 4 to 7 months till November to announce? Why didn't they announce it around August 31st, the 20th anniversary of Diana's death, in a tribute to his mother's legacy? (It was guaranteed wall-to-wall press coverage and Meghan probably would've sold out the VF issue if they did, possibly cementing her as a "serious" cover girl at Kate's level.) Why didn't they announce it in September ahead of the Toronto Invictus Games and after the VF article? (Arguably they did with Meghan's strategic product placement of the Husband shirt.) Why didn't they announce it the second The Queen was back from Balmoral?

My theory: Harry knew they effed up with the VF article and delayed it to let the palace's anger blow over, and luckily Big Bro William to the rescue announcing Kate's third pregnancy right before Meghan's VF issue dropped so the firm could ignore the Meghan story in favor of pushing the new Cambridge baby.

And if Harry proposed before Meghan did the interview and if they were engaged before the issue dropped/the advance copy went out, then that explains why Meghan got to stick around after talking to the press about their relationship and why Meghan got the official royal treatment at Toronto IG despite being "just" a girlfriend; Harry was already committed and engaged to Meghan.

So finally FINALLY all this to say that People Anon might help me confirm this long-held Tumblr rumor: Meghan had something over Harry that caused him to keep her after she talked to VF about the relationship, and that was their engagement.

Whew.

If you want to respond with that Charlie Day gif from It's Always Sunny, the one where he's crazy on coffee explaining conspiracy theories in front of the wall of paper, I totally understand.

Although at this point I've been researching and writing this up for so long that now I'm doubting Bower's excerpt says they were engaged when she did the VF interview and I made that part up by overthinking it too much. I'm just going to click submit and you can tell me if I imagined that part.

I'll crawl back into my research hole now.

While I enjoy researching and writing up these metas, I understand they're probably depressing to read.

Thank you for sticking with them, with me, for so long.

Despite what it may seem, I, too, wish that fandom can be apolitical. I, too, wish that I can play with anything, everything I want.

But, my understanding has been ... a fandom of Chinese stars doesn't allow that.

Have you heard of The Li Jiaqi Paradox?

Li Jiaqi 李佳琦 was a top Chinese influencer, a leading online salesman with a legendary record of selling RMB 1.7 billion worth of products during a 12-hour streaming section. His Weibo has over 30 million followers (for comparison: Gg: 31 million; Dd: 40 million).

His glorious days ended, nonetheless, on June 3rd, 2022. During a live stream session, he was to promote oreo cookies and ice cream cake. His aid entered the scene with a tank made of both:

Those who're familiar with the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Square Massacre may know why a tank was about the most politically sensitive object one can show on June 3rd. For those who're not familiar, here's a world-famous photo from June 4th:

A photo from the famous footage of "Tank Man", the nickname given to a courageous Chinese man who, alone with nothing but grocery bags in his hands, attempted to stop the advance of a file of tanks into Beijing on June 5th, 1989. His identity and survival were never confirmed. This is among the most censored image on the Chinese internet.

Li's broadcast stopped abruptly after the tank appeared. The explanation given later was "technical issues". Li hasn't appeared in another broadcast again.

The irony of the situation is: born in 1992, Li wasn't supposed to know anything about the 1989 June 4th incident at all. The censorship on June 4th has remained among the strictest of that of all politically-sensitive issues in China. That Li didn't know about June 4th actually meant he had been a good citizen; that he hadn't scaled the Firewall, hadn't perused "anti-revolutionary" material, looked at things he shouldn't have looked at.

Li was a-political, in a way that should've pleased his government.

And yet, it's precisely this innocent, this state-pleasing apolitical-ness of his that led to his downfall, that led to his not knowing a tank was a political red line, especially on the evening of June 3rd. The Li Jiaqi Paradox 李佳琦悖論, whispered by sympathetic Chinese netizens, was about this unsolvable dilemma: to be apolitical in China, one has to be so political that they know of every single political red line to avoid.

This paradox may explain, in a nutshell, why I'm making Chinese politics a learning journey for myself, in parallel with my turtlish adventures. I believe my ability to maintain Gg's and Dd's a-politicalness as a turtle is, to a certain extent, dependent on my awareness of the political red lines in their world, of the unspoken rules surrounding their political engagement.

Such as, how they appropriately respond to the state media's propaganda posts.

My engagement in Chinese politics isn't about doing what the Chinese government wants. I'd be the first to say: Chinese censorship rules do not apply to i-fans. Even supertopic rules do not apply to i-fans.

It's just that, I feel a need to exercise a ... courtesy, I'd call it, if responsibility is too strong a word, to avoid placing any Chinese stars, regardless of my (dis)liking of them, on a political red line. They've taken great care to avoid these lines, as evidenced by the propaganda reblogs (and everything else they do, really). The least I can do is to respect, and reciprocate the care they've put into them.

Hong Kong's and Taiwan's democracy movements are China's political red lines. Same as almost anything about Japan (but especially, especially World War II), about the United States...

Lines that are probably more like ribbons after today. Wide, thick ribbons waiting for some poor Chinese to trip on.

This means, while I can make my political stance clear — and I have — I strive to not project it on any Chinese stars. No matter how much I wish they think in more similar ways as I do.

This means, I may roll my eyes hard at ... for example, the Chinese propaganda about the Hong Kong Handover; I may complain about it, vocally, but I never imply the stars participating in the propaganda had even a trace of unwillingness in performing it.

This means, I refrain from portraying the same stars as regarding any piece of propaganda — particularly those involving red line topics — as something serving more personal, and/or less patriotic, purposes.

As I confessed in Section 1, my wish for writing this meta is to appeal to fellow fans to consider doing the same, with the last point.

As turtles, we have a treasure trove of fun things, a Honeyduke-on-steroid's worth of candies. I think, we'll be okay without playing with a post about a World War. We'll be okay without playing with a post crafted with, possibly, more than a tinge of anxiety, given the rough political waters so many Chinese are navigating in right now.

When a mainland Chinese — any mainland Chinese — reblogs a propaganda post, I tell myself, they're making a statement of loyalty towards their government. Nothing less. Nothing more.

Then, I move on. Is it difficult to watch my favourite stars doing this, dancing perenially on a field of political landmines? Yes, of course. And it hurts too, I admit, to have to be reminded, like today, that the more I insist my views and the views of my favourite stars are at significant odds with each other, the safer, the better it probably is.

But I chose to be here, right?

So, no complaints. 😊

All right, that's way too much of me on the soapbox today (sorry). Let me jump off and finish this meta series by wrapping up Li Jiaqi's story. Because in it lies, perhaps, one more paradox, one more irony —

Li's fans, many of them young and equally innocent and state-pleasing, asked over the days after the ice-cream-oreo tank incident what had happened to their favourite influencer. Where has Jiaqi vanished off to? I've been waiting for him to recommend my next lipstick! Sell me the lipstick at the lowest price! The older fans hinted in all sorts of ways without tripping the censorship filter. They talked in emojis and numbers; they told the young to scale the Firewall; they referred to the resolution passed by the Chinese congress after the incident ...

In the end, Li and the ice-cream-oreo tank accomplished what the Chinese government has, for so long, tried so hard to prevent from happening, what it could still have prevented from happening if it had not cut Li's broadcast short, if it had just let an ice-cream tank have its minutes of limelight —

Li and the ice-cream-oreo tank successfully taught thousands of young Chinese what had happened on the night of June 4th, 1989, in Tiananmen Square.
