Armstrong and Scott with Hatches Open
"Astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and David R. Scott sit with their spacecraft hatches open while awaiting the arrival of the recovery ship, the USS Leonard F. Mason after the successful, but early, completion of their Gemini VIII mission. They are assisted by USAF Pararescuemen Eldrige M. Neal, Larry D. Huyett, and Glenn M. Moore. The overhead view shows the Gemini 8 spacecraft with the yellow flotation collar attached to stabilize the spacecraft in choppy seas. The green marker dye is highly visible from the air and is used as a locating aid."

Packard 2775
This is the wild-looking Packard 2775, a 24-cylinder "X" engine. The "X" represents the arrangement of the engine's banks of cylinders, which in this case form the shape of an X. This engine was developed in the 1920s as the powerplant for a US Navy aircraft that was hoped would win the Schneider Trophy Race. All 24 pistons connected to a single crankshaft in the middle, and in total the 2775 displaced 2,775 cu in (45.5 litres). On this engine, it was possible to mount four spark plugs per cylinder (two per side). It made an impressive 1,500 hp before the 1930s, but it was never fitted to an aircraft and only a few were built.

USS Constitution arrives in Everett, Washington on July 7, 1933. She was "at the foot of Hewitt Avenue in Everett and opens to visitors. Everett is one stop on a three-year U.S. tour made by the Constitution between 1931 and 1934, a goodwill trip on which the ship travels 22,000 miles and visits 91 ports. The ship's stay in Everett ends on July 14."

USS Tide (AM 125) minutes before its final plunge off "Utah" Beach. She was a U.S. Navy minesweeper that preceded the Normandy Invasion armada, and sank in the waters off France.
This striking picture, made from USS Threat (AM-124), shows the stricken vessel burning as USS PT 509 and USS Pheasant (AM-61) other ships stand by to pick up survivors. Tide sank a few moments later.…
