james and regulus had a lot of communication issues. james just wanted to talk, regulus couldn’t do it. his childhood trauma made it hard for him to express his feelings and it took him a while to process things, typically needing to write it out. this frustrated james but he understood regulus’ needs, always wanting to try and make things work.

when james and regulus fought, it was typically because reg couldn’t trust james’ love, he wouldn’t allow himself to, because he was nothing more than an heir to his parents and he didn’t feel loved by his brother. regulus took the dark mark to appease his parents, and he knew james wouldn’t be okay with it. when he told james, he had already made up his mind that james would hate him and that they had to be over. james wanted to make things work; they could still be together secretly, he knew regulus’ heart and that was enough, a tattoo couldn’t break his love, but regulus wouldn’t let himself believe james. he just wanted to kiss james and forget the rest for a few minutes, but james had had enough of making out and pushing problems away, begging him to just listen, ultimately deciding maybe this was for the best.
