DannyMay day 10: bones
Backstory to piece:
Back in 2020 we moved back into our old childhood home and we met the a feral cat that had taken to living under our house while we were away.
It took a whole year for us to tame her down enough for us to handle her and we named her Lilith. The original idea was to catch her, fix her and release her back, it never really crossed our mind that she'd want to stay but we were joyfully wrong. She never left and now 2 years later she doesn't really go out anymore, only coming out when we're doing yardwork or the occasional sunbathing.
Even though she rarely leaves, I still worry about her when she doesn't come back within her usual 10 minute sunbath on nice days. Thankfully her outings are becoming progressively rarer and she's content playing and napping inside with us but I'm still scared. Keep your cats indoors, it's dangerous out there.
Here's our half-toothed kitty 💕

So this is a little embarrassing. Tonight we realized that this amazing prize drabble has been sitting in our drafts for three years. (peep us panicking under the readmore)
So without further ado, congratulations, @sput-niik for completing all 31 days of Dannymay all the way back in 2020!
This drabble was for your Day 30 artwork - family, because danny with a cat is adorable!
****
Danny capped the lid of the thermos with a sigh of relief escaping his lips. For a fearful split second, he thought his breath escaping into the cold air was his ghost sense, but relaxed when he realized there was no tingle of ectoplasm in his breath.  Mew.
Danny paused, his ears perking up. The alleyway was abandoned, with only a dumpster full of trash and a chain link fence dividing the alley into two. No one was in sight, ghostly or otherwise.
Mew!
Danny lowered himself to the ground, and transformed back. His eyes adjusted to the darkened alley, and he blinked.
A small black kitten dashed out of a open trash back and skittered under the dumpster, a small piece of rotten meat in its small mouth.
“Oh,” Danny breathed. Wary of the dirty road, he leaned down and stuck his head under the dumpster, nose crinkling at the smell of soured milk.
The kitten was curled up on top of a plastic bag, devouring its chicken leg to its heart’s content. It regarded Danny with narrowed eyes, and when Danny stuck a hand in it let out a faint hiss.
“Little one, where is your mama?” He cooed. He always had a soft spot for cats. It only let out another hiss at him.

For the WIP asks game, can i ask about Dannymay 2020 Shorts - Science ?
(for this tag game)
So! The doc is actually called “Dannymay 2020 Shorts”, and I have been chipping away at the Dannymay 2020 prompts one at a time there! There are three prompts that I’ve finished, but the current WIP in this doc is for the prompt “Science”. It’s from Jack’s perspective, and he’s confronting the realities of catching the ghost kid vs. what he “scientifically” knows to be true.
Here’s an excerpt!
Ghosts don’t feel pain. Ghosts don’t feel fear. Ghosts don’t feel.
The science of it all says it’s impossible.
Jack stares down at the ghost in the alleyway before him. Its leg is stuck in the Fenton Ghost Trap - were it human, Jack would think that the leg’s broken, bent at an odd angle, the teeth of the trap digging into the not-flesh. It’s gloved hands are raised in a vain attempt to defend itself - the gloves are ripped and the hands covered in scratches, likely from where it had tried to pry the trap from its leg.
The ghost is crying.
“Please,” it whispers hoarsely, then whimpers when its leg spasms, ectoplasm welling from the wounds.
“Please.”
Ghosts don’t feel pain. Ghosts don’t feel fear. Ghosts don’t feel.
The science of it all says it’s impossible.
Thanks for the ask!

[ID: two images, both digital art for the show Danny Phantom, showing a scene of the lunar horizon with earth visible in the dark sky of space. Danny in his ghost form is sitting on a rock in the distance and looking towards earth, with his aura casting a faint white and blue glow around him, and his eyes glowing green.
The first picture has him slightly dim and transparent, while the second he is solid, brighter, and much easier to see. End ID]
Remade the original post so the image description is included, because the original won't let me edit it in :) an old 2020 Dannymay prompt !
Bonus tall version for phone backgrounds:

[ Dannymay 2021 doodle dump ]
So yeah, I actually made like... a lot of sketches for dannymay 2021 prompts, before I went off on the kitsune au rabbit hole that year kajsndakjsdn
I was planning to reuse some of these sketches again since some of em looks really fun but uh... that didn't happen so lmao
I think the first one was for the stars prompt and kinda based on the idea of Danny moving into Clockwork's place and they decorating his rooms with star stickers ....I swear it was based of someone's fic but I can't remember whose
Midnight prompt was RET AU Vlad, where he is actually decent and trying to help figure out how to get Danny un...connected? with the ghost? before realizing he might've bitten more than he can chew.
I don't have much for the illusions prompt, it was just continuing from ectober 2020's drawing. Tho I do end up using the prompt for kitsune au animatic so it worked out lol
Nature is RET AU Danny taking care of plants bc uwu
I don't remember the prompt for this one but maybe it was freedom? Danny's the king but he's more like a caged bird than a free one
This and the next one are ideas for scars prompts. Danny with lots of scars and human au Clockwork n Danny have their own scars on their face. I just think the compositions actually look nice so I'm keeping em
Shadow prompt was actually someone flashing a light or taking a picture of Danny with a flash and his shadow reflects green eyes instead of Danny himself would be a fun twist :3c

Hey :3. Due to Tumblr shenanigans, I can't reblog anything outside of my dashboard, but I wanted to ask what the post from 2 years ago on May 15, 2020 about bnha x dp for DannyMay 15 / favorite AU is based on or inspired by.
ah ok so I think that probably the answer will be somewhat lackluster compared to the effort you’ve gone to get it, but I think for that year at that point I was trying to catch up with prompts and I was watching mha at the time and I enjoy friendship. and floating seemed cute? and maybe the sweatpants shirt gag was part of the draw?? the rest of my art for that au is from several months later, and had more Intent behind it, but that one I think was mostly a “wouldn’t that be neat”

Strange
fanfiction
this fic is based off of @jerichomere‘s dead kyle au comic
hidey hey u guys im back for another dannymay fic jhgvf
Kyle walked through the main entrance of Casper High, a yawn falling out of his mouth while his eyes scrunched closed. When he opened his eyes, he had walked down the hallway a bit where the rest of the students were gathered. He smiled at some and waved at others as he walked down the hall, but it was starting to dawn on him that everyone was staring at him weirdly.
No one was waving back to him as he greeted his classmates. Everyone either backed away from him or avoided looking at him altogether. His friend, Nost, nearly jumped out of his skin when Kyle clapped him on the shoulder in their usual greeting.
Huh, that’s strange.
Pulling back, he looked at Nost with wide eyes, saying something about catching him later. Nost must’ve pulled an all nighter, it wouldn’t have been the first time. He shrugged off the feeling churning in his gut and changed direction when he saw Wes standing at his locker.
“Hey, bro.” Kyle said as he walked up behind Wes. “Everyone looks like they’ve seen a ghost. Do you know why they’re acting so weird?
Wes paused in his digging in his locker, his hand clenched around his locker door. He slowly turned around, eyes wide, to stare at his brother who was standing nonchalantly in the middle of the hallway.
“You have got to be kidding me.” Wes said.
“What?” Kyle looked at Wes’ wide eyes and the way he shrunk in on himself. “Oh, not you too. I don’t know what crawled up everyone’s butts but you can come find me when you’re not being weird. I’m going to class.”
Kyle walked away from Wes, adjusting his backpack straps, and made his way down the hallway. The people he passed were white as a sheet and were looking at him with wide eyes. He didn’t know why they were acting so strange, but he would just go about his business as usual.
“Hey, Dale! High five!”
Dale instinctively lifted his arm and turned toward Kyle at the invitation for a high five, but the moment he realized it was Kyle’s hand smacking into his, it looked as if his soul left his body.
Kyle continued walking down the hallway, whistling as he turned into his english classroom.
“Lord of the Flies! Mr. Weston?!”
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
“So how come you don’t eat then?”
Wes kicked a rock as he walked beside Kyle, hands shoved into his pockets while he sported a grumpy expression on his face.
“What do you mean? Of course I eat! I’m just not that hungry very often.”
Wes shot Kyle a look. “I haven’t seen you eat since… For a couple weeks now. When do you eat that no one ever sees you?”
Kyle shrugged. “Probably when I’m baked as fuck.”
Wes sighed. “Well you’re not high right now, and you’re not eating, are you going to be hungry enough to join us for dinner?”
“Eh, I think I had a big lunch today. I’ll let you know if I’m hungry later.”
“You think you had a big lunch?”
Kyle looked away from Wes. “I mean, I assume I had a big lunch since I’m not hungry.”
“You don’t even know?” Wes stared wide eyed at him. “Look, Kyle, I know you don’t believe in ghosts but-”
“Ghosts aren’t real.”
“But-”
Kyle sighed. “Look, I don’t want to talk about this right now. I just want to go home and do my homework.”
Wes followed after Kyle quietly, hands tucked into his jacket while Kyle was clad only in his hoodie even in the fall weather.
Later at home, Kyle was interrupted from his homework when Wes knocked on his door and opened it.
“Hey, dinner’s ready. If you wanna, uh, come eat.”
Kyle softly shook his head and gestured at his homework. “Nah. I’m, uh, not hungry. Besides, I wanna get this essay done for Mr. Lancer.”
“Oh, okay. I’ll see you later.”
Wes quietly shut the door behind him and Kyle leaned back in his chair and sighed. The churning feeling in his gut was reignited when the invitation to dinner sounded more like… A formality rather than an actual invitation this time. Like Wes knew Kyle wouldn’t be joining them.
Turning the thought away, Kyle leaned forward to his desk again and turned his attention to the homework assignment Lancer had handed him with a barely there tremor in his hands. He stared at the assignment for a moment before getting up and crawling into bed, pulling the blankets over his body and curling into himself.
He closed his eyes and tried to fall asleep.
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
As Kyle walked through the hallways of Casper High, he began to realize that he now had to look up at many of the kids who were in a younger year than him. Even Wes was slowly beginning to surpass him in height. He’d always been taller than Wes, why was he catching up to him now?
Suddenly, a large body bumped into him on the left, nearly toppling him over to the floor.
“Hey, shorty, watch it!”
Turning towards the voice, Kyle looked up at Keith who wilted upon meeting Kyle’s gaze.
“Oh, uh, hey Kyle! I didn’t know that was you there! I thought you were Mikey or something.”
Kyle looked around the hallway and pointed to where Mikey was standing in the middle of the hallway with his friends. The boy who had once been a foot and a half shorter than Kyle now stood at the same height as him.
“He’s over there.”
Keith followed where Kyle’s finger was pointing and nodded vigorously. “That he is, I’ll go- go pummel him for making me think you were him!” Keith walked away towards the scrawny boy. “Hey, Mikey!”
Kyle’s brows furrowed and he uneasily made his way over to where Wes was at his locker. “Hey, when did you all get so tall?”
Wes looked over his shoulder for a moment before turning his attention back to his locker. “About a year ago. Why? Did you finally notice?”
“Notice what?”
“That you stopped growing.”
Kyle shook his head. “No, of course I’m still growing. I just haven’t had a growth spurt in awhile. I’ll catch back up to you guys.”
When Kyle woke up the next morning and came downstairs yawning, Wes looked up at Kyle and the inch he used to have on him.
“Of course.” Wes said as he poured himself a cup of coffee. “Who could have seen that coming.”
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
“One of these days I’ll make you admit it.”
“Admit what?” Kyle asked as he tossed a football towards Wes as they stood in the middle of the park.
“That ghosts are real.” Wes caught the football and threw it back towards Kyle who jumped to catch it.
Kyle tsked and tucked the football against his side. “You can’t admit what isn’t true. Ghosts aren’t real.”
Wes sighed and bent over to pick up his stuff. “Whatever.”
I will never admit that ghosts are real.
I won’t. I can’t-
-Kyle watched as Danny flew around, putting on a show with his parents special effect technology. The man he was pretending to fight put on a pretty impressive act. Suddenly, one of the special effect machines exploded, shooting into the building Kyle was standing in the second story of. The building rumbled and groaned and he could hear Danny shouting his name.
“Kyle!”
Then it fell. The building collapsed around him, puffs of dust going everywhere, the road littered with debris. Kyle’s head popped out of it like it hadn’t even touched him even though he could still feel the floor falling apart under his feet-
“Come on, let’s go home. Dad wants us there for some dinner with Vlad.”
Kyle watched Wes walk away for a moment, his heart in his stomach before following behind him, gripping his backpack straps tightly.
Because if I do…
That’s not all I’ll have to admit.

Interview With a Ghost
This is a sequel to Unearthed and Scarecrow/Grave Robber from my Ectober series.
A summary of those: When Danny became half ghost, he half died and left half a corpse. He, Sam, and Tucker went and buried it in a infrequently-traveled public park. The police found it during their annual picnic. A couple of detectives, Collins and Patterson, were assigned to the case, and they're trying to figure out what's going on. Danny keeps trying to convince them to stop. His corpse-related anxiety is making him do things of questionable wisdom. Ghosts do not like their remains disturbed.
.
.
.
Danny slipped into the police station invisibly, trailing after the two detectives. They seemed like nice people. Good people. Dedicated people. That last was a problem. He didn't want them to be dedicated. Not about this.
What he wanted was for his body to be put back in the ground and forgotten about. He wanted his mystery to go unsolved.
The problem was, how to convince these two, and the rest of the Amity Park Police Department while he was at it, that it was better for everyone if the mystery went unsolved?
It really would be. Between Vlad and the GIW... Danny's secret getting out would have nasty consequences. But he couldn't tell them about Vlad, and the consequences concerning the GIW weren't immediately obvious without knowing the solution to the mystery.
Maybe Sam was right. He should forgo this whole 'interview' nonsense, come back when he actually had a plan. As it was, he would just give them more clues he didn't want them to have.
But if he left them alone...
He listened to them making plans to interview his human self and other students at Casper High. They were going to interview him, anyway. He bit his lip. At least, he could distract them from that. Perhaps he could make out that he was older? Too old for the students at Casper now to have known him? No, that wouldn't work. They had his body. They'd be able to tell how long it was buried. Even he knew that.
"Does it feel cold in here to you?" asked the younger detective, Patterson.
The other tilted his head, frowning. "Maybe," he said. "Phantom?"
Well, he wasn't going to just appear out of thin air in the middle of this giant room full of desks. Over half the police in town had to be there.
Some of them must have noticed Detective Collins question, because there was a wave of whispering, and the room began to fall quiet.
Despite being invisible, Danny felt very exposed.
"If you're here," said Patterson, raising her hands, "we just want to talk. Will you talk with us?"
"It doesn't have to be here," said Collins. "We've got private rooms. We can talk there."
After a few tense seconds, Collins began to walk away.
They're right over here. Interview rooms. They're actually pretty nice, not what you usually see on TV."
With some reluctance, Danny followed. He could just leave.
But that wouldn't accomplish anything, except, perhaps, to make them more suspicious of him.
The room was indeed nicer than Danny had expected. The floor was carpeted. The walls and furniture were wood. There was a mirror, a one-way window, on one side of the room. Danny wondered if the purpose of the room was to lure interviewees into a false sense of comfort.
He blinked at the one-way glass a few times, adjusting his vision so he could see what lay beyond. As expected, it was rather crowded. It looked like a good number of the other detectives had squeezed into the booth.
"You realize," said Collins, out of the side of his mouth as he situated himself in a chair, "that if he isn't here we'll look like idiots, right?"
Danny sighed, heavily, and the detectives stiffened. He faded into invisibility. "You aren't idiots," he said. Then he remembered what he had come here for. "About this particular thing."
"Ah," said Patterson. "Well, thank you for coming and doing this interview."
"Yeah," said Danny, crossing his arms, "about that. I could do without the peanut gallery." He nodded towards the mirror.
"The-" Collins glared at the mirror. "Oh, for the love of god. Patterson, can you clear them out and get Captain Jones? He's the only one who should be here for this."
Patterson rolled her eyes but left the room.
"Well," said Collins. "While we're waiting for her to get back, let's make ourselves comfortable. You can sit down if you want."
"I'm fine," said Danny. He watched as Patterson started shooing people out of the room behind the glass and the captain walked in.
"Alright, that's okay. I'm not sure we've been formally introduced. I'm Detective Collins. My partner is Detective Patterson."
"I know," said Danny. "You're the homicide team. Well, this, me, it wasn't a homicide. Okay? So you don't need to do this."
Collins spread out his hands. "I'm not going to pressure you to talk about it," he said. "I gather that ghosts don't like that particular subject. But we have to investigate any suspicious death we come across. And yours? It's pretty suspicious."
"I'm telling you, it isn't. It's just dumb," said Danny.
Patterson came back into the room. "Hi," she said. "I'm Detective Patterson."
"Yeah," said Danny. "I know."
She leaned up against the wall next behind Collins. "So, what should we call you?"
Danny shrugged. "Phantom, I guess," he said. Was that an unsubtle attempt at finding out his real name? "Look, I know that you want to know who I am, and how I died and all that, but I'm not here to talk about that."
"Then what are you here to talk about?" asked Collins.
Danny closed his eyes briefly. "It would be dangerous if you knew those things. I want to talk you out of it. I'm sorry I left my body in a public placel. If you want me to do community service to make up for it, I will. But I'm not planning on pressing charges, and there's not anything else that would come of looking into it. Like I said, it was an accident, and not one that's going to happen again."
"Because you'll make sure of it?" asked Patterson.
"No," said Danny, annoyed, "because it was freak chance. One in a million, or even less. Most ghosts aren't sticking around to avenge their deaths." Revenge was a boring Obsession, Vlad's notwithstanding.
Okay, so maybe the portal accident wasn't quite as 'one and done' as Danny was claiming, but that was why he didn't want anyone to know about it.
"So, why is it dangerous to know about?" asked Collins.
Danny puffed his cheeks out. Why, indeed. "It's dangerous to me," he said, finally. "If you haven't noticed, I have more than a few enemies, and there is a reason ghosts don't like to talk about their deaths."
"So why don't you tell us?" asked Patterson. "We're not going to tell anybody."
"No, but you'd have to confirm it, and people would know," said Danny. In retrospect, this was a pretty good cover for why he didn't want his manner of death to be investigated, and he'd come up with it on the spot! Well, he always did do better under pressure.
But just as Danny started to pat himself on the back, Collins sighed. "Phantom. What happened to you wasn't 'just' an accident. Half of your body was missing."
Danny raised an eyebrow. "It looked pretty whole to me," he said. "All three times."
"According to our ME, it only weighed about half what it should have," said Collins, leaning forward.
Static filled Danny's brain. Half. Half the mass gone. Stop. He already knew- It was not time to panic.
"So?" asked Danny.
"There was also a lot of ectoplasm in the body," added Patterson.
"Well, this is Amity Park, and I am a ghost."
"More than it should have gotten just from you handling it."
"What, and you're suddenly an expert in ectology?" scoffed Danny. It was a good thing he didn't sweat in ghost form.
Patterson leaned forward, stepping away from the wall. "Were you killed by a ghost?"
Danny blinked. "No," he said. "That's stupid. Ghosts know better than anyone that someone dying doesn't necessarily mean they're gone." He rubbed his eyes. "This was a bad idea. You're not going to listen to me." He turned to go.
"Wait, Phantom," said Collins. "Just one more question, please."
Danny glowered from his position near the ceiling. He'd been just about to go through. "What?" he ground out.
"Is the reason you don't want anyone to know that you're dead because..." he paused, apparently searching for words, "because no one even knows you're missing? Because you're still trying to live your life? Because you're pretending to be alive?"
Danny's very alive heart hammered in his chest. "That's more than one question," he said.
He vanished.

(This is probably Dan, but it's fine, and nobody is going to get hurt or sth. ) (AU concept Art. Characters are OOC in some ways. ) I really like the drawing above. It took me quite some time. 😄 (I was my own model… It's great to observe ordinary things. )
I am posting Dannymay stuff (finally). There's part one:
Tumblr media
Little Dan is lost. He wants to go home. 😢 (I was going to draw Danny looking for his cat, but I was too lazy to do that. I drew a sketch of the idea and then gave up. Then I drew little Dark Danny being upset and scared. )
Tumblr media
I have weird concepts and I draw strange things. 😂 (So I drew this… I wanted to do the Free Day, but sadly I was too busy. )
Tumblr media
😂😂😂His food is safe to eat. (I actually drew blood. @suekis-stuff said the blood's colour looked like that of cherry juice. 😂) (An actual fish with blood doesn't really look like this. I have painted a few paintings about fish, like a grass carp. It's really convenient to see interesting fish in my city. ) When I posted this drawing to Lofter, I realised that I said something about Danny "going fish-watching". It won't be a good idea if he actually eats those fish. 🤔 (Also, this scene is in his mind. When he has those "wing-like things", it means the surrounding things are just in his imagination. The two Danny are "real" though, they sometimes talk. ) I mentioned about the "wing-like things" before, and I think I should explain the concept again. 😂
About this AU: It's an AU where ghosts are really just "neighbours" or ordinary creatures. I will talk about the details in the future. The "Danny" here is basically Dan, but he lets Danny's human half continue to live instead of destroying the "human". … (I will just draw a nice picture and write some more detailed information about the AU later. 😩)
☹️☹️☹️I spent the whole morning writing these things (and browsing art as well as reading fanfics😂). I really should paint or draw things… ☹️🙃🙃 I sometimes think it's better to post my art to somewhere else, and just leave this platform. 🙃🙃🙃
😞 I need to think about optimistic things more, and exercise every day.

Eyes
Two days after THE ACCIDENT (which was in all caps in his thoughts), when Danny’s mom first let Sam and Tucker in the house, he stumbled through a muddled question about why things were different all the sudden. But after watching the concerned expressions on their faces, Danny vowed to himself to never bring those differences up again. It wasn’t the last time he’d keep things about his new slightly-unhuman state to himself.
Pretending to be human had been simple at first. But as the days wore on, Danny got more used to his condition, and it was easy to forget how different humans were. He would check himself, just a moment too late, and have to deal with the looks from Sam and Tucker.
The worst of it - or perhaps the best of it - was his new vision.
It was a trip to the beach about two weeks post ACCIDENT - Tucker and Sam’s latest bid to get Danny to relax just a little - that Danny noticed something off with how his friends looked. Tucker stripped off his shirt, dropping it onto the sand, and ran towards the cool water with a shout.
Danny was quite used to the idea that animals had stripes. Zebras had stripes. Tigers had strips. Ms Fitzgerald’s cat had stripes. The bugs in the backyard had stripes. Humans?
Humans didn’t have stripes. He knew humans didn’t have stripes.
But Tucker... did? His back was filled with shimmering lines of color. They stretched from his sides across his back, then dipped down his spine in a V-shape.
Danny blinked, looking around at the other humans playing around on the beach. All of them did.
Humans… had… stripes... now. “Freaky,” he whispered.
“You okay?” Sam asked.
He blinked at her. “Yeah,” he said after a moment - unconvincingly, if her expression was any sort of clue - and plastered a smile on his face. “I’m good.”
She studied him a moment longer before shrugging and following Tucker. No doubt to talk to him about the latest odd thing Danny had done. Danny knew they were keeping a list. He wondered how long it was.
Now that he’d noticed the stripes, he could see them on Sam too, curling down her legs. And on the arms of the people who still wore street clothes. He stood there, arms crossed over his chest, uncertain about this latest development. It wasn’t like there was anything he could do about it.
He slowly stretched out one of his own arms, studying it, not quite sure how he’d missed this. For two weeks! But as he turned his arm in the sun, he couldn’t see anything. No stripes. No shimmering lines of that not-color.
He... didn’t... have stripes.
Perhaps that made sense, in a way. It wasn’t like he was human anymore.
The thought made his teeth tingle.
“Come on, Danny!” came a shout. Danny wasn’t paying enough attention to know who it’d come from.
In a sure-fire bet to get thoughts out of his brain for a while, Danny raced across the warm sand and jumped into the cold water.
“Danny!” Sam shrieked, holding up her hands to stop the huge splash of water from getting her too wet. She laughed a moment, then narrowed her eyes a little. “You forgot to take your shirt off,” she scolded.
Danny grinned at her. He didn’t care about the wet clothes. “You sounded like your mom there.”
She swept off her hat and bopped him on the head with it. “Crossed a line, there.”
She had stripes on her face too - they seemed to glow in the sun, now that her hat was off. They were… cute. Maybe humans having stripes wasn’t that bad.
Settling the hat back on her head made the stripes fade, and that’s when Danny noticed the slightly uncomfortable expression on her face. He realized he had an odd smile - no doubt a reaction from the stripes - and he wiped it from his face.
“Ooooh,” Tucker crooned, swimming up beside him, “do I detect a little bit of a crush on the boy’s face? And perhaps a little too much blushing on the girl’s? What is this latest development?”
Danny and Sam turned on Tucker with an almost simultaneous, “Stop it, Tucker.”
Tucker’s last word before he was tackled and half-drowned was, “Lovebirds!”
Over the next few days, Danny spent hours upon hours researching eyes, going deep down wikipedia black holes, reading dusty encyclopedias from the attic, even checking out a book on ophthalmology from the library. It hadn’t taken long for him to understand the why and the how of his new vision - it wasn’t like he was dumb.
He appeared to (somehow) had more rods in his eyes than a normal human, making his night vision pretty incredible. Figuring he could see about as well as a cat at night, Google informed him that would mean he had six to eight times more rod cells than normal.
The night vision was cool. Even Sam and Tucker thought so, the first time Tucker caught Danny forgetting to turn on the lights before starting his homework at ten at night, or when he pointed out the bats flying overhead to Sam when they walked home from a late movie.
The old encyclopedia has also hinted that he had more cones in his eyes than Sam and Tucker. Instead of the usual three - which he still seemed to have, since he wasn’t missing any colors - he had four, or perhaps more. He could see new colors that didn’t exist before. Shimmering shades that humans had no words for. Ultraviolet, was the word Danny eventually learned to attach to these colors.
Which led up to today, the accident nearly two years in the past and no longer in all caps in his mind, when Danny was lying on a blanket at the park. Sam was lying next to him, having fallen asleep in the warm sun. By this point, he’d nearly forgotten how different humans saw the world - and it was jarring when he was reminded of it.
When he was running his finger over the faint stripes going down the length of her arm, she stirred and glanced at him. “You feel like a bug,” she murmured.
“Hmm,” Danny said. “Problems with that? I thought you liked bugs.”
“Not when they wake me up,” she said, pulling her arm out of his reach and sitting up with a yawn. “What were you doing?”
“Tracing your stripes.”
“My what?” She studied her arm before giving him a confused look.
Danny, abruptly remembering she couldn’t see that particular color, waved his hand dismissively. “Never mind.”
Sam scooted closer - nearly into his lap - and thrust her arm in front of his face. “Tell me.”
“Sam, it’s nothing,” Danny tried, but Sam’s face was set. Sam and Tucker had long since realized he saw the world a bit different than them. They didn’t usually call him on his oddness anymore, Danny figured it was because he was useless at explaining, but now and then Sam dug in her heels. He sighed and pushed her arm away, pulling out his phone.
“Don’t pretend to ignore me-” Sam started, but stopped when Danny handed her his phone. It was open to a website about the invisible lines that covered humans, only visible in the ultraviolet spectrum. “Oh,” she muttered.
Danny wiggled his fingers, silently asking for his phone back. He grinned at her when she plunked it back against his palm. “You wanted to know.”
“I didn’t really want to know I have stripes,” she muttered, climbing to her feet.
“But they’re cute!” Danny said. He got up too, snagging the blanket in his arms. “It’s like a kitten with stripes-” Realizing he’d probably gone just a touch too far by comparing her to a kitten, Danny started towards the edge of the park.
He felt her catch up to him and yank the blanket out of his hands. “You’re wrinkling it,” she fussed, expertly folding the blanket as she walked. Her cheeks had a red tinge to them, and didn’t comment on what Danny had said.
“Wrinkling it?” Danny questioned, counting himself lucky for once. “It’s a blanket that was spread out on the grass!”
“What color is it?” Sam asked.
“Is what?” Danny grabbed the blanket back, holding it with one hand and snagging her hand with his other.
“The blanket, idiot.”
He glanced down at it. “Blue…?”
Sam twisted her lips. “So just a normal blanket.”
He grinned at her. “Hey! It’s a special blanket. It matches my eyes.”
