Man, I like Daily Wire in concept but Matt Walsh needs to shut the fuck up about video games. The same guy who tried to resurrect the tired old "violent video games are harmful!" crap is now acting like he's the first person to notice that video games are pushing woke nonsense (even though there are about a hundred channels and outlets that have been talking about this for years) but his solution is to, of course, for the right to stop playing video games.
No. Just, no.
This is the same "bury our head in the sand and pretend pop culture doesn't exist" mindset that got us into this situation in the first place. You can't win a war (and there is a culture war going on, no matter how many people on both sides want to pretend otherwise) by retreating from every battlefield. You win by raising awareness of a problem and then offering a real solution.
And it's especially stupid seeing this cultural retreat mindset from someone working for DW because DW actually knows exactly how to fight this battle. They created their own media company to fight against woke Hollywood. Are all their movies and shows good? No, not at all. But they still did the right thing. They put their money where their mouth is, and created an alternative.
A much better example is Angel Studios, which is probably the only Christian movie studio I've ever seen that puts out top quality content with great acting, writing, and production values. They're raking in money and getting their content onto mainstream streaming services as well as theaters. In other words, they're taking their message to the people who need it the most. The ones who aren't already in the echo chamber. Unlike Daily Wire, which only offers its content on its own website through a subscription service to its own audience, and never advertises anywhere.
Another successful example outside of movies is Eric July's Rippaverse. He's been killing it with his comics, with every single one of his campaigns raking in over a million dollars, every cent of which is reinvested back into his business, helping it grow, creating more content, and expanding his already impressive roster of writers and artists. Mainstream writers and artists, by the way. Like Chuck Dixon, the guy who co-created Bane and wrote the seminal Tim Drake Robin comics, among many other credits, and Mike Baron, who wrote some of the best early Punisher comics. Eric had a following before he started the Rippaverse. He runs a successful YouTube channel and he's a regular contributor to The Blaze. He could have walled himself off with his fanbase, wrote comics about ancaps saving the world from the evils of government, and made some money while pandering to the people who already agreed with him. Instead, he went big. He invested his own money, runs his own distribution center, owns his own business with zero outside investors, hires the best talent he can, and offers a product that focuses on story and characters over messaging. His work isn't even "anti-woke". It's just not woke.
And that's what we need in video games. We need alternatives. We need to roll up our sleeves and wade into the deep waters and actually contribute our ideas and our talents. Offer an alternative. Hire people who know what they're doing, who care about quality content first and social engineering never. There is a huge untapped audience who would pay hand over fist for good video games free from microtransactions and woke nonsense.
But retreating is not an option. It's not brave or moral to hide in our echo chambers and scoff at anything fun. Entertainment is necessary. And maybe more importantly, it's not going anywhere. We will never live in a world where people go to work and spend time with their families at home and do nothing else. We need to engage with the world as it is. Not wait around for whatever our idea of a perfect world is to magically form so we can finally interact with it. You can't change society if you keep pretending large swaths of it don't exist.

FYI, there are no good guys here. Ben Shapiro is an Islamophobic, misogynistic, anti-Black racist. And Candace Owens is an antisemitic, Islamophobic, misogynistic, anti-Black racist. They both suck.

The Right accuses their critics of the conspiracy they themselves engage in
Tumblr media
People on the right have some really weird ideas about their ideological enemies: that we’re “groomers,” that we’re secretly on some billionaire’s payroll, that we hijacked the education system to promulgate revisionist histories, that we steal elections, and, of course, that we are secretly plotting to take over America and subjugate them.
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/10/teneo/#i-grasp
The weirdest thing about this is that it’s the right that engages in revisionist race-history:
https://www.teenvogue.com/story/the-myth-of-the-happy-slave-explained
And it’s the right who stole a presidency:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooks_Brothers_riot
Election-rigging is a right-wing specialty:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/23/state-of-play/#patchwork
It’s the right who pay for fake grassroots activism:
https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/raising-them-right-far-right-fight-college-campus-1234636392/
Any time some right-wing politician comes out against queers and calls them groomers, chances are good that he’s spending his free time on Instagram, sending fire emojis to naked boys:
https://www.ibtimes.sg/randy-mcnally-tennessees-anti-lgbtq-lt-gov-caught-liking-commenting-young-gay-mans-racy-69364
That’s especially true when we’re talking about evangelical youth pastors:
https://www.newsweek.com/full-list-texas-pastors-charged-abusing-children-1765910
It’s almost like that old playground rebuttal, “I know you are but what am I?” contains a deep political truth:
https://doctorow.medium.com/takes-one-to-know-one-104d7d749408
Of all the absurd libels of the right, the weirdest one is that leftists are secretly funded by woke billionaires spending dark money to foment the overthrow of the USA. The idea of “leftist billionaire” is laughable on its face: how did this imaginary billionaire make their billions while paying a living wage and providing decent working conditions?
But it’s easy to understand how a group of people who are so positively *aslosh* in dark money — people whose every political maneuver is a carefully planned scheme to separate terrified xenophobes and rubes from their money — for “alternative” covid therapies, apocalypse-ready MREs, “sound money” gold coins, and so. much. culture. war. nonsense.
What I’m trying to say is: when the right accuses the left of being driven by cabals of shadowy, crepulent billionaires and their pathetic lickspittle Renfields, it is because the right is indeed in the thrall of those crepulent billionaires.
Meet Leonard Leo, a crepulent, shadowy billionaire. Leo was last seen around these parts when he was revealed to have been the bagman behind the ultradark money group Judicial Crisis Network. After spending $27m to block confirmation for Obama’s SCOTUS pick, Merrick Garland, they spent tens of millions more on campaigns to seat Kavanaugh and Gorsuch. Coney Barrett was seated thanks to a $15.9m campaign to make an unqualified, unhinged ideologue seem like a viable lifetime member of the highest court in the land:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/09/29/betcha-cant-eat-just-one/#pwnage
Leo controls the Judicial Crisis Network, which worked with the Federalist Society to allow Trump to appoint a whopping 28% of all US federal judges — lifetime appointments for slavering Renfields who’ll follow his political lead. Witness the firepower of a fully operational billionaire.
Leo’s post-Trump side-hustle is a “Federalist Society for everything” — a secretive, lavishly funded cabal aimed at taking over campuses, corporations, news outlets with an army of “under 40s” conservative operatives. It’s called Teneo, and it was a secret — until its internal memos, videos and other materials leaked to Propublica.
Propublica’s Andy Kroll and Andrea Bernstein collaborated with Documented’s Nick Surgey to report out the leaks, describing how Teneo when from “a dinner club with partisan overtones” to a dark-money juggernaut whose annual donations grew by leaps and bounds (2017, $750k; 2020, $2.3m; 2021, $5m):
https://www.propublica.org/article/leonard-leo-teneo-videos-documents
These financial good fortunes are not the result of excited small-money donors hoping to help Teneo with its good works — it’s a handful of ultra-wealthy sociopaths hoping to use a minority of willing lackeys to project their will over all of us.
Teneo’s network members are a Monster’s Manual of the wildest wingnuts in public life, from Josh Hawley (who wrote its founding manifesto) to JD Vance to Elise Stefanik to BenShapiro to three of Ron DeSantis’s top aides. Also: federal judge who struck down Biden’s mask mandate and the heads of the Republican Attorneys General Association, Republican State Leadership Committee and Turning Point USA.
The stated goal of Teneo founder Evan Baehr (a tech bro turned conservative organizer) was for Teneo members to infiltrate “the House and the Senate, as governors — one might be elected president.”
In a leaked video, Baehr identifies the “woke” enemy he seeks to vanquish, describing a hypothetical meeting between “a billionaire hedge funder, a film producer, a Harvard professor and a New York Times writer.” These four cook up a plan to give middle-school kids “free access to sex-change therapy paid for by the federal government.” The filmmaker promises to make a documentary to support the project. The Harvard professor promises to falsify studies to reassure people that the therapies are safe. The Times reporter vows to “profile people who feel trapped in the wrong gender.”
This irony is that this unhinged conspiratorialism was hatched by someone who was and is actively conspiring to take over the country with members of his secret society. After years in the wilderness, Baehr connected with Leo, who turned on the money spigots. Together, they recruited an “inner core” of FedSoc members “and recruit[ed] them for either specific roles to serve as judges or to spin up and launch critical projects.”
Other shadowy billionaires piled in: Home Depot’s trumpy founder Bernie Marcus, Charles Koch, and Betsy DeVos and her family. The new “Teneo 2.0” sought to “to help members find jobs, write books, meet spouses, secure start-up financing or nonprofit donors and learn about public service.”
Their vision is to create “Silicon Valley of Conservatism — a powerful network of communities where the most influential young leaders, the biggest ideas, and the most leveraged resources come together to launch key projects that advance our shared belief that the conservative worldview drives human flourishing.”
They funnel money to speakers from the absolute depths of the swamp: Erik “Blackwater” Prince, David Brooks, Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy. New members are assured that their involvement with Teneo is “private and confidential” and the group has kept a low profile — Propublica asked Sheldon Whitehouse — a bitter critic of Leo’s — about the group and got a blank stare.
Teneo’s latest project is to recruit “state attorneys general, state financial officers, state legislators, journalists, media executives and best-in-class public affairs professionals” to fight ESG policies — all the froth you’ve encountered about the evils of ESG are the result of this secret, coordinated project.
(To be clear, ESG is bullshit, but not because it’s bad for capitalism — ESG is a dumpster fire of greenwashing:)
https://pluralistic.net/2022/03/15/sanctions-financing/#profiteers
Teneo organizes donors for members who run for local, state and federal office. Will Scharf, who’s hoping to become Missouri’s next attorney general, has received donations from dozens of Teneo members, giving the maximum allowable donation of $2650.
The paranoid style in American politics never went away. From the Witchfinders General of New England to Joe McCarthy and the John Birch Society, there has always been a rump of Americans who are very rich and very frightened and who want to put us all in their place.
For these fevered schemers, the Jack Chick tracts that depicted secret Satanic societies seducing innocent kids through Dungeons and Dragons games were hard-hitting documentaries, and as far as they’re concerned, they’re fighting fire with fire.

[Image ID: A page from the Jack Chick tract 'Dark Dungeons,' depicting a sinister society of robed figures gathered in a circle, welcoming in a new initiate. The pentacle on the floor has been replaced with Teneo's stylized 'T' logo. The dialog has been replaced with text from Teneo's 2019 Community Vision report: 'The Silicon Valley of Conservatism — a powerful network of communities where the most influential young leaders, the biggest ideas, and the most leveraged resources come together to launch key projects that advance our shared belief that the conservative worldview drives human flourishing.]

The Daily Wire, which regularly portrays itself as a defender of women's sports to demonize trans athletes, cries about people calling for Caitlin Clark's salary to be raised
Tumblr media
Also, Ben is probably one of the last people to be complaining about anything coming even remotely close to exerting yourself physically (source: Daily Wire on YouTube)
The Daily Wire's whole stance on women's sports twists in the wind depending on what's most convenient for the narrative at that exact moment. Apparently, despite caring about women's sports enough to make a whole transphobic comedy film about it, the Daily Wire is also content with mocking women's basketball and even saying that it shouldn't exist anymore when it suits the narrative that they are trying to paint around the recent controversy about Caitlin Clark's salary. If anything, this response really exposes their "we care about the integrity of women's sports" grift and shows that the Daily Wire and the conservative media ecosystem only really care when they can use it to attack trans athletes. Lets get into it.
Ben Shapiro:
First of all, in an utterly brilliant stroke of journalistic genius Ben spelt Caitlin's name wrong in the title of his video.
Tumblr media
There are few more basic facts than somebodies name so this is a pretty disappointing performance from the man of FACTS and LOGIC.
00:00, Ben Shapiro: "Well folks, apparently we're all supposed to be really really disturbed by Caitlin Clark's new WNBA salary."
So, this controversy arises from the fact that the WNBA's top draft pick Caitlin Clark's salary is $338,056. She will earn 76,535 for her first year, $78,066 for her second year and $85,873 her third year. For contrast, the top NBA draft picks salary is $55 million. This is obviously a massive difference and just another example of the gender pay gap at work.
Do I think that someone like Caitlin Clark is the most horrible example of the gender pay gap in action? No, there are women who obviously have it way worse. But this still merits conversation if only because it shines a spotlight on the ever present gender pay gap in the United States.
On average, women earn 16% less than men. In some industries, the gender pay gap is staggering. For example, in the legal industry men earn 59% more than women do. Even in the industry with the smallest gender pay gap, Life, physical, and social science occupations, men still earn 9% more than their female counterparts. To deny that there is a gender pay gap is to deny reality.
00:12, Ben Shapiro: "The highly awaited, much watched WNBA draft, apparently it actually did get some decent ratings but only because of Caitlin Clark."
What kind of dumbass argument is that?
"Yeah, I'm gonna be sarcastic about nobody watching the WNBA....except I guess people did watch it...but ONLY because of the person who I'm arguing should get a lower salary."
Newsflash Ben, if people are only watching the WNBA for Caitlin Clark that means that she's singlehandedly bringing large amounts of revenue into the company and thus deserves a higher salary. Ben, in his effort to be pithy, accidentally destroyed his own argument with FACTS and LOGIC.
00:29, Ben Shapiro: "So first of all, I'm gonna use the left-wing argument that they're constantly using with regard to entertainers who make a lot of money which is 'But a public school teacher is only making like, 45 grand so why is Caitlin Clark more important that-'. Again, all those arguments go out the window when it's somebody that they supposedly like."
I've never heard that argument made in my life. My guess is that Ben heard someone on Twitter say that about some billionaire CEO and is now projecting that onto the entire left.
Also also, how does this even relate to anything? This discourse is about Clark's salary in comparison to her male counterparts.
00:45, Ben Shapiro: "In any case, Caitlin Clark making 76 grand and Hoda is very disturbed, super -- not disturbed enough to, you know, cut into her multimillion salary for Caitlin Clark but disturbed."
What does Ben want Hoda Kotb to do? Make a donation?! Again, the discourse isn't around Caitlin being so underpaid that she's going to starve away and die. It's about the difference between her salary and her male counterparts.
Ben plays a clip of Hoda Kotb and then comes back.
01:37, Ben Shapiro: "When women are complaining about the salaries in the WNBA, as comedian Bill Burr has pointed out, women are half the population. They can go to WNBA games, but they don't. So why are you yelling at men about the salaries in the WNBA?"
This is great because I did a one second google search for WNBA and this headline was the first result - "WNBA Draft Reaches Largest Audience Ever, Up 374% Among Women". Hmmm, it seems like women ARE watching WNBA games since WNBA viewership is at a record high especially amongst women.
Ben decides to talk about viewership, says the viewership numbers are bad even though the WNBA has had record viewership this year, and then says something hilariously stupid.
02:12, Ben Shapiro: "Now, maybe that changes because Caitlin Clark is in the WNBA although I have doubts because we've seen this story before. Every time the Women's National Soccer Team wins a championship, wins a world cup, everybody's like 'this is the moment when women's soccer in the United States is just gonna take off on a professional level' and two years later the league is bankrupt because no one went to see a women's soccer game because why would you? A bunch of high school boys could beat them."
Ok Ben, if you're so confident I propose that you and Matt Walsh and Michael Knowles go up against three professional women's soccer players. You guys can bring Tim Pool if you can convince him to leave his compound and experience direct sunlight coupled with the possibility of experiencing the touch of a woman for more than twelve seconds. By Ben's logic him and his Daily Wire cronies would absolutely mop the floor with them. Naturally I think they'd get absolutely demolished but I would love to see that.
You know, for a guy who becomes a staunch defender of women's sports every time a trans athlete competes in them, Ben really doesn't seem to care about women's sports that much. Huh, it's almost as if his concerns about the integrity of women's sports aren't all that sincere.
Matt Walsh:
Tumblr media
Lets look at another one of these heroic defenders of women's sports. Matt Walsh, a guy who's based a good quarter of his entire career around whining about trans people in women's sports, surely would be supportive of the WNBA.....right?
04:45, Matt Walsh: "In fact, WNBA players are not underpaid at all.  They are, if anything, vastly overpaid. By all rights, as a simple economic matter, WNBA players should not be getting paid anything. If they're getting paid anything above zero, they are overpaid."
Oh. Hmmm, maybe he isn't being sincere when he talks about trans athletes in women's sports either.
"Yeah, I don't want trans people in women's sports....I also think women's sports shouldn't exist but IF they continue to exist I don't want no trans people in there."
Conclusion:
This is another one of those "bedrock" episodes that's pretty valuable for dissecting a conservative media narrative - that narrative being that the right cares about women's sports and is trying to defend it from those evil trans people who....went through years of hormone therapy and oftentimes surgery for the soul purpose of cheating at women's sports I guess?
When you've got guys like Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh attacking the very notion of having a women's basketball league, maybe they honestly just don't give a crap and are just using this as an excuse to attack trans athletes. It's just pure in your face hypocrisy.
Cheers and I'll see you in the next one.
