Sony Music Group Extends Program for Unrecouped Artists and Songwriters
An Overlooked Tracks News Finding: Here’s an article you might have overlooked. Having a partnership with NewsAPI, we try to catch music entertainment news for you to view, read and possibly enjoy. We will continue to find what’s available in the world of music entertainment, concert information and music releases. But obviously you – the listener and reader are the biggest source for news in your area, so if you can share with us. For right now, look at what we found for you:
“From The Billboard Magazine Website – Sony Music Group Extends Program for Unrecouped Artists and Songwriters”
Unrecouped artists and songwriters are now eligible to receive royalties on a rolling, 20-year basis.
More legacy artists and songwriters are going to be able to profit from the boom in streaming and other digital royalties after Sony Music Group expands its program for paying royalties to more artists with unrecouped royalty balances, chairman Rob Stringer announced Wednesday evening (May 25) during a presentation to Sony Corp. investors.
Sony Music Group chairman Rob Stringer
With Artists Forward and Songwriters Forward, both launched in 2021, Sony Music decided to pay royalties to artists and songwriters who were signed before 2000 and haven’t received advance since.
Sony Music didn’t wipe the slate clean by modifying contracts or adjusting the account balances. Instead, it would ignore the negative account balances of artists whose royalties earned over the previous two decades never caught up with their advance and expenses.
Now, Sony Music is offering eligibly to the Artists and Songwriter Forward programs on a rolling 20-year basis. So, qualifying artists will have signed prior to 2001, had not received an advance since then and remain unrecouped. Those artists will earn royalties retroactively from Jan. 1 2022 beginning this fall, according to a Sony Music source. The following year, artists and songwriters signed prior to 2002 become eligible.
“At Sony Music Group we take pride in our efforts to be the most creator-friendly company in the modern music industry and we will keep searching for the most principled ways to represent our talent,” said Stringer.
In recent years, as streaming platforms brought much-needed growth to the industry, music companies became increasingly outspoken about inequitable treatment of artists and songwriters. Some recordings and compositions stem from contracts signed just before global revenues declined in the early 2000s – as CD sales were replaced by piracy and legal downloads – and have never paid royalties to the artists or songwriters.
The U.K.-based independent Beggars Group started paying unrecouped artists in 2015 after seeing catalogs earn a few thousand dollars every six months because of streaming. “That seemed significant enough to pay through to the artist, but not significant enough to worry about it making much of a dent in a half-million-pound debt,” Beggars founder/chairman Martin Mills told Billboard in 2021. In 2020, BMG eliminated the controlled composition clause from artist contracts, which reduces the amount of mechanical royalties owned to performing artists who write their own songs from download and physical purchases. Warner Music Group followed suit in February with a program like Artists and Songwriters Forward.
Stringer’s presentation highlighted the company’s tremendous growth led by streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube. Over the last five years, Sony Music’s revenues grew at a 15.5% compound annual growth rate while its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization posted a 23.2% CAGR. During that time, Sony Music increased its frontline label’s global roster by 30% and increased its creative staff by more than 85%. The opportunities expand beyond streaming, too. New revenue sources such as social, gaming, fitness and Web3 now account for nearly $500 million on an annual basis, Stringer revealed.
“We will keep accelerating our creative momentum with a continued aggressive investment in talent through expanding our roster of artists and songwriters organically and through strategic acquisitions of content companies,” said Stringer.

Crabs in a bucket is Nines’ second album release in the UK.
What an album!
First of all, Nines is UK rap. Period.
The features from Skrapz, NSG, Nafe Smallz, Louis Rei & Tigs The Author just to name a few, should give you some idea of the vibes you can expect on this piece of art.
Classic smooth trapper rap. That’s what I’m calling it. It’s just vibes
I can already see myself in 50 years, listening to Magic hood fm and Nines ft NSG -Airplanes comes on, while I sip my henny from a tea cup.
And most importantly you can hear the growth in his lyrics, the content of the music and the creative package.
No other rapper in the UK is giving us this quality of visuals. Two movies and Two fire albums. The bar is set high!
I can’t wait to see what he has in store next.
Nines new album - Crabs in a bucket & the movie is out now to purchase and stream on all major platforms.

As creators, it’s important that we strive to create a positive relationship between our content and community while still retaining our rights. With this in mind, we’d like to share our new content policy covering how you can use our IP.
(you can click the link embedded above or click the readmore. there is a lot of text!)
Everyone at Critical Role is extremely honored and humbled by the interest our incredible community has shown in the stories that we tell, the shows that we produce, and our company in general. We think it’s pretty amazing that our fans want to create artwork, websites, and other works (“Projects”) based on our intellectual property (“IP”). Our IP includes any unique material our team creates — things like the names of our campaigns (for example, Vox Machina and Mighty Nein), our characters (for example, Grog Strongjaw or Beauregard Lionett), story locations (like Whitestone or Nicodranas), company slogans (such as How Do You Want to Do This?), as well as written content and all related artwork, music, etc. We are generally cool with Projects that follow the rules outlined below, but we reserve the right to remove Projects that, in our view, misrepresent these rules or use our IP inappropriately. We want our fans to continue celebrating our world and sharing their talents with the community, but for Critical Role (“CR”) to exist as a company, our legal advisors have suggested we establish some ground rules for how our IP can be used!
1. What can I develop with Critical Role’s intellectual property (“IP”)?
Free stuff for the community to view, with some exceptions. Critical Role allows you to use, display and create derivative works based upon Critical Role’s IP, strictly for noncommercial (except as specifically provided below) community use. CR reserves the right to use our sole discretion to deny anyone the use of our IP at any time, for any reason or no reason. If we deny you the right to use our IP, you must stop developing, publishing, or distributing your Project immediately.
In all cases, the use of our IP with your Projects must be appropriate for our Critter Community. Projects cannot be defamatory, offensive (including but not limited to anything transphobic, sexist, homophobic, racist, ableist, ageist), or harmful to others (as determined solely by CR).
2. Can I create a project that is commercial in nature?
You may not create commercial Projects, including any Project that (without a written license agreement from us):
i) crowdsources any portion of its funding; ii) involves a business or legal entity; iii) gates the content with a paywall (e.g., Patreon, YouTube Premium, etc.), unless it is also legitimately available elsewhere for free; or iv) involves the sale of merchandise utilizing CR IP
We prohibit the use of our IP in interactive games, apps, and downloads. Please do not take any part of our IP (e.g., character appearance, character abilities, maps, icons, items, etc.) and use it in a game or app for other than your own private, noncommercial use. We do not allow any Projects utilizing our IP to appear in any app stores, including the Apple Store or Google Play, unless they have a written license agreement from us.
No monetized novels, theatricals or the like. You are not permitted to write, produce or create any novels, theatrical productions or other adaptations that include CR’s intellectual property without our express written permission.
Fan fiction is generally permitted (and enjoyed!) by CR, as long as the content is not monetized and otherwise follows the guidelines of this policy.
You are not permitted to manufacture, promote, or distribute (for free or otherwise) any merchandise (such as apparel, game pieces, accessories, etc.) that bear any CR IP without a separate, express written agreement between you and Critical Role.
Critical Role, on occasion, collaborates with and licenses third parties for the creation and distribution of Official CR Merchandise. These agreements are separate from this CR Fan Content Policy.
3. What about passive ad revenue?
This is one of those exceptions we mentioned earlier. We permit fans to promote their Projects on websites, streams, or videos and passively generate revenue through appropriate advertisements, including pre-roll ads, ad breaks, and sponsor ad overlays. No inappropriate direct ads or sponsorships—we alone decide what qualifies as inappropriate, but if you won’t see it on Critical Role, it is probably not appropriate.
We permit individual fans to solicit personal donations or offer subscription-based content while livestreaming, so long as non-subscribers can still watch the live stream concurrently. In other words, you may have your Project behind a paywall, so long as the Project is legitimately also available for free in some other way.
Your use of CR Content must be transformative in nature. You cannot simply re-upload our content. Examples of potential transformative works include:
Animatics
Compilation videos
Remix edits
Added commentary
Music/ music videos
Cosplay content
Art / draw alongs
GIFs / memes
React videos
For longform CR content: Originally 2 hours or more in length (e.g., Critical Role, Exandria Unlimited, and One-Shots)
CR allows your passive monetization of under 10 minutes of content usage per episode
CR may claim monetization or execute an automatic takedown for over 10 minutes of content usage per episode
For medium-length CR content: Originally between 1-2 hours in length (e.g., Between the Sheets, Narrative Telephone)
CR allows your passive monetization for under 5 minutes of content usage per episode
CR may claim monetization or execute an automatic takedown for over 5 minutes of content usage per episode
For short CR content: Under 60 minutes (e.g., Handbooker Helper, All Work No Play)
CR may claim monetization or execute an automatic takedown, which includes any “clips” or “memes”
4. Can my Project make reference to Critical Role?
We’d love that! Just make sure that your Project follows the other guidelines in this policy and clearly let people know it is a fan Project and not an official CR Project. That is, you are not permitted to state or imply that your Projects are affiliated with, sponsored, or approved by Critical Role. You may not create a Project in a manner that could cause other Critters to believe that it is an official CR work. If you share your Project with others, please conspicuously include the following disclaimer (e.g., on your Project’s website):
Portions of the materials used may contain trademarks and/or copyrighted works of Critical Role. This material is not official, is provided for free, noncommercial entertainment purposes only, and is not endorsed by Critical Role.
5. Can I create CR-related video content before the content is available on Critical Role’s YouTube channel?
No. Please be considerate. So it’s clear, any posting or other unauthorized disclosure of CR-created content prior to its official release on YouTube (or an authorized media-sharing platform) is strictly prohibited. In regards to spoilers, even after an episode’s release, spoilers can ruin a fan’s experience and we always aim to avoid them. Please be respectful of others and do not deliberately push plot reveals on people who are actively avoiding learning about them. If you are releasing fan content after its official release on the CR YouTube channels, we ask that you please offer spoiler disclaimers (or appropriate hashtags) as a courtesy.
6. What about CR fan art that’s shared publicly during or after a livestreamed RPG broadcast and before the VOD is available on YouTube?
Boy, we love ourselves some amazing Critter fan art. We also want to ensure that artists are taking every precaution not to spoil an episode before its official release on the CR YouTube channel. Please ensure that your artwork is not audiovisual in nature and follows the guidelines set forth in this policy. Again as a general courtesy, please include spoiler disclaimers (or appropriate hashtags) whenever possible.
7. Is all content in a Critical Role video available for use?
No. Certain CR videos contain music or other content that Critical Role doesn’t own. Critical Role, at times, enters into licenses with 3rd party content providers to enhance CR videos for viewing. Since CR cannot grant you a license to use someone else’s content, you’ll need to get permission from the copyright owner(s) before using their content. If you include non-Critical Role music or other content in your video, do so at your own risk. Your video could be subject to filtering or takedown notices by the owner of the copyright in the original work.
8. Can I use Critical Role’s Logos or Trademarks?
Generally, no, and only in limited instances. Use of Critical Role’s brands, logos, character names, actor names, actor and character likenesses and other IP are only to be used in connection with the discussion of Critical Role works, Official Products and non-commercial Projects in compliance with this Policy. Critical Role expressly prohibits uses of its Trademarks to promote your business or merchandise. You may not register domain names, social media accounts, or similar stuff that uses any of our trademarks, trade names, character names, etc. without expressed written consent.
You definitely may not use any CR trademarks as keywords, titles, or search tags for products that are infringing or counterfeit.
9. Can Critical Role use my Project?
Yes. We want fans to create and share cool things with each other, and we want to remove barriers to sharing. Because you are using Critical Role IP, if we celebrate or spotlight a fan Project, or make something that somehow resembles a fan Project, by posting it publicly you give Critical Role permission to spotlight or share your Project with the world. By using Critical Role IP in the creation of your Project you give CR authorization to share your Project in any way at our sole discretion. Critical Role will always attempt to contact artists in these instances and/or provide proper artist credit whenever possible.
10. What if my Project is not covered here?
If your creative efforts are not covered by this Policy, you’ll need our prior, written approval before you put it out in the world. If you have any questions or creative content you want to make that isn’t covered by this Policy, contact us by sending us an email to [email protected]. Written approval is required for Projects that are outside of the scope of this policy.
If you don’t hear from us, it does not mean we approve of your requested use of our IP.
11. Anything else?
Yes. Critical Role reserves the right to change this Policy at any time with no notice whatsoever, but we’ll do our best to communicate any changes widely as soon as we can in the interest of remaining transparent with you.
Please note that we are constantly developing new content and creating new IP that will fall under these guidelines.
Thank you so much for your attention to this policy. Our main goal is to ensure that the Critical Role community remains creative and vibrant as it’s always been. Our content policy will protect what we own today for the long haul so that we can continue to create magic for all of you for many years to come. If you have any questions at all, please reach out to us at [email protected] or via critrole.com/contact.

The Basics of Shifting Part 2
What to Set Up Before You Shift
Everyone is different but there are some things you should try to help you start out. Find a quite place and turn off all notifications. If you have an apple phone then night mode is a good option.
Next you’re going to want to have a playlist set up with not only subliminals but also your meditations and any other audio you may need. Some people find that  listening to certain music before they shift helps them visualize so that may be a good idea to add those to your playlist.
Leading up to this it may be a good idea to review, rewrite and revise you script. It is also helpful to watch and take notes on the media your DR is based off of or if its not based off of media to find media, art or photos that remind you of your DR and take notes on that. It may be convenient to keep all these things in one place such as a Shifting Journal which I have talked about in a previous post.
It’s important to tell yourself and write down regularly that you believe you will shift and you will shift and any other affirmation that suit you. This you should do more often then the days you plan on shifting if you do not plan on trying everyday.
Try coming up with a schedule that you stick to and adjust if or when you fail until you succeed. This way once you succeed you will know what steps to repeat in order to shift again.
Finally meditate and take care of your CR self. It’s important to keep up with the  well-being of you CR self in order to maintain the motivation, mental stamina and focus needed to shift.
How to Shift
Now that you have completed everything you need in order to shift its time to actually do it. This may seem daunting at first, but believe in yourself and don’t be scared off by failure. If you do fail, note what went wrong and how and course correct. You will succeed.
There are many methods of shifting and I will go more in-depth next but you don’t have to pick just one. It is a good Idea to do more then one per attempt. Picking one and just sticking to it no matter what may end up being your downfall.
Try to follow the method to the best of your ability but don’t feel to much pressure to do exactly what they say. What works well for most people may not work well for you and that’s fine. Play around, test out different methods and mix and match. Eventually you will shift.
Methods of Shifting
There are many methods to try out but here are some of the most well know ones.
Pillow Method: Write out your script on paper and put it under your pillow. Then use affirmations to help you shift. I recommend using this method with other methods.
Elevator:  Personal favorite of mine. Imagine your DR self stepping into an elevator and then the doors closing behind you. Count down from or up to 100, between each number say affirmations. Then imagine the elevator opens and you walk down some stairs, counting up to or down from 50. You will reach a door, once you open the door you will wake up in your DR.
Alice in Wonderland: Imagine you are sitting up against a tree and wait for a sign of your desired reality. Once you see that sign, it could be a person, animal or thing, chase it. It will jump down a rabbit hole and you should follow. There will be a table with a key, take the key and open the door. On the other side of the door is the sign you have been chasing follow the sign into your desired reality. Some people like to imagine falling down into their reality at this point.
Estelle: Listen to a song that reminds you or makes you think about your desired reality. Imagine you and a person from your desired reality are listening  to that song together. When the song ends, visualize them standing walking to the door. Walk through the door together while you say affirmations and visualize your DR. You should then be in your DR.
Staircase: Visualize a staircase and then climb it. At the top of that staircase is a mirror, look into the mirror and examine yourself, take as much time as you need. When you turn around there will be someone from your DR, visualize them asking if you are ready to go. Say yes and take their hand. When you wake up you will be in your DR.
Heartbeat: This method is very similar to the Estelle method but it works best for when you want to visualize a romantic partner. Find a heartbeat sound on your phone and place your phone under a pillow. Lay on the pillow and imagine your laying on your romantic partner’s chest. Play the sound for as long as you like but when it ends imagine your romantic partner standing at the door and asking you if you want to go. Say yes and follow them through the door. When you wake up you will have shifted.
Raven: This method is one of the most popular methods I’ve seen. Play a subliminal and count from 1 to 100. Between each number imagine your DR and say affirmations. It’s recommended that you lay down and are tired for this one but when you wake up you will be in your DR.
These are just a few of the really popular methods I’ve seen but there are many others out there. I personally have created one that’s based off of the heart beat and the elevator method called the altered elevator method. So don’t feel discourage if none of these work for you.
Where to find information
Simply put, get your information from other shifters. This is a bit more complicated than it seems so there are some ground rules you should follow.
- If it looks shady or dangerous DO NOT do it
- If what they say is outrageously different from what you are hearing from other people then don’t trust them and don’t interact with them
- Take everything with a grain of salt and constantly fact check. No one is an expert, we are all new to this.
- Trust yourself, your gut and your experiences over what anyone else is telling  you. You are capable of making decisions and reasoning for yourself.
That being said you can find information on:
Here: follow other shifters and listen to their experiences
Discord: Find community and collaborate with other shifters
Wattpad: Strangely enough there is a decent amount of information about shifting on Wattpad. Keep safe though.
YouTube: Listen to other shifters as they explain and share their experiences
TicToc and Amino: For whatever reason these platforms have some of the most toxic and misguided information. I do not recommend making these platforms your primary source of information. Though not every creator on these platforms is bad, so just trust your gut.
Part 3 coming soon
What to expect:
-Lifa App
-Alternate Selves
- Clones
Coming soon after I finish this series:
Methods: In-depth series and personal experience
Scripting: In-depth series

The best Father's Day tech gift ideas for 2021
Tumblr media
All products recommended by Engadget are selected by our editorial team, independent of our parent company. Some of our stories include affiliate links. If you buy something through one of these links, we may earn an affiliate commission.Parents! Where would we be without them? Nonexistent, is the answer, and so we must thank them for our existence in this world. No matter how Philip Larkin feels on the subject, it’s that time of the year where we celebrate our parents and reward them for raising us. If you’re looking for a gift for your father, or the person who held that role in your life irrespective of their gender, we’ve got a list for you. A lot of gift guides these days like to pretend that our parents were born during the baby boom, even if that’s nowhere near true anymore. After all, if your parents are knocking on 50, then the first war they can remember likely featured Luke Skywalker. That means they’re likely as plugged-in to gadgets and technology as the rest of us. It’s just that they’re waiting for you to splash out on some gifts they perhaps wouldn't have bought for themselves.
Anker PowerWave 4-in-1 charger
Tumblr media
Anker It's highly possible your dad is. carrying more than just a smartphone. After all, it’s thought that around 100 million iPhone users are also toting around an Apple Watch, with similar numbers of AirPods being sold over the last few users. That’s why we recommend a charging dock like Anker’s PowerWave 4-in-1 to keep all of that gear fully powered. As the name suggests, the 4-in-1 lets you charge four devices at once, including wirelessly charging for compatible iPhones. In addition, a vertically stacked Lightning port allows you to charge your AirPods, while an Apple Watch pad lets you do the same for your wearable. Rounding out the quartet is a USB-C port for charging any spare devices you have lying around, like an iPad. It’s not cheap, but considering that one such device will unify your charging needs in one place and free up several sockets, it’s definitely worth it — especially if your dad is already in the habit of dumping all of his tech onto the nightstand when it’s time for bed. Plus, it’s from a credible brand with a long history in the charging business, as opposed to some flaky company you’ve never heard of. Buy Anker PowerWave 4-in-1 charger at Amazon - $100
Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones
Tumblr media
Sony It’s likely that your parents will want a pair of good-quality headphones just as much as you do. Sony makes some of the best noise cancelling headphones on the market: the romantically named WH-1000XM4. It’s a pair of ANC cans which Sony has gradually refined from a powerful contender to a world beater since its original launch in 2018. By this point, these headphones have everything your giftee needs, plus plenty of things they never knew they did. The XM4 is lightweight, comfortable to wear and has touch-sensitive earcups, as well as a battery rated for 30 hours. It also comes with a Speak-To-Chat tool that automatically pauses the audio when it detects that you’ve started to talk. Similarly, built-in motion detection halts the audio when you take the headphones off and resumes when you’ve put them back on. Plus, it incorporates Sony’s 360 Reality Audio tech, should your dad be the sort who'd possibly pay for a high-definition audio streaming subscription. Buy Sony WH-1000XM4 at Best Buy - $350
Nanoleaf Triangles starter kit
Tumblr media
Nanoleaf Interesting lighting setups are not the exclusive province of YouTubers and game streamers. If your dad has a den that they want to jazz up with some smart lighting, consider one of Nanoleaf’s starter sets. The company didn’t invent smart lighting by any stretch, but its innovative system of interlocking shapes require no prior knowledge to install. We especially appreciate that they provide a canvas for artistic expression, letting you arrange them in your own pattern across your home. You can of course can then set your own lighting sequences in the companion apps, or even pair them with the right accessory to react to music in the room. The only danger, really, is that your parents spend your inheritance decking out their home in nothing but Nanoleaf panels. Buy Triangles starter kit at Amazon - $200
Withings Body Cardio scale
Tumblr media
Withings Withings makes some of the best smart weighing scales on the market today, with a litany of features beyond just measuring your weight. Its flagship Body Cardio can check your heart rate, body fat percentage and now offers a score to monitor your cardiovascular health. Those are all good metrics, especially if your parents are thinking more about staying healthy as they get older. There are a couple of other things that set the Body Cardio apart from other scales, including automatic person recognition. Since most people don’t weigh the same as their other family members (and if you do, well done), the scale can automatically track who's using them during every weigh-in. That means the whole family can use the scales without having to worry about tagging their stats to their own profile afterward. Hardware aside, one of the best things about Withings is its companion Health Mate platform, which has been around for years. Not only is it well designed, but it lays out all of your health data in a way that’s easy to understand. Buy Body Cardio scale at Amazon - $150
Mackie CR-X computer speakers
Tumblr media
Mackie There are lots of generally fine Bluetooth speakers out there, but perhaps your audiophile dad wants something a little classier. Maybe a pair of high-quality desktop or bookshelf speakers are the sort of thing he's been hoping to receive as a gift. Perhaps he's a hobbyist music maker and wants to listen to his projects in higher quality. Either way, he needs something better than the sort of junk speakers you find on an aisle-end at Best Buy. Mackie’s CR-X speakers are affordable, but offer the sort of sound you’d expect to pay a lot more to listen to. They’re not as good as studio-quality monitors, but they’re close enough that only the most sensitive of ears will notice. And, you know, at this sort of price, that’s nothing to sniff at. The CR-X offer open, deep and transparent sound, but are neat enough that they can sit on a small desk, filling your room with sound. You’ll also get balanced TRS and unbalanced RCA inputs, as well as built-in Bluetooth on these X-series models. Now, for this guide I’ve picked the CR3s, which combine a three-quarter-inch tweeter with a three-inch woofer and built-in Bluetooth. That’s a great “all-round” option that will make most things sound like honey, especially if you’re upgrading from a $50 speaker. But those three-inch models do suffer from a little bass rolloff since they’re constrained by their small size. If you have the budget and space, you should opt for the four-inch, or five-inch versions to help mitigate that issue. Buy Mackie CR-X at Amazon - $120
Apple Watch Series 6
Tumblr media
Apple For the majority of people, the Apple Watch is the only smartwatch they need to consider. Sure, you need an iPhone to use it, but there’s no watch on the Android side yet that quite matches Apple’s timepiece. If your parents have iPhones and are interested in tracking their fitness, monitoring their health or just staying in touch, just go with this. Obviously, there are plenty of reasons why buying an Apple Watch for your parents is a good idea, from the ease of use to the health-monitoring features. If your dad has a heart condition, or is worried about keeping trim, having a blood oxygenation and ECG on their wrist seems like a good idea. Then there’s Fitness+ which, should you feel like buying, will let them access on-demand exercise classes. By now, Apple has smoothed out many of the early-day kinks that might have turned away prospective shoppers. The watch's display is now always-on, the UI is more intuitive, the software is smarter and, well, that’s enough. Even if the Apple Watch does seem a bit staid at this point. Garmin Approach S42
Tumblr media
Garmin Did you spring forth from the loins of someone whose identity has coalesced around the sport of golf? Do they talk of nothing but improving their handicap, watch nothing but The Masters and wear nought but beige chinos? Fear not, because you won’t have to buy them another set of monogrammed tees since that’s the only golf-related thing that’s available to buy. Instead, consider Garmin’s Approach S42, a dedicated golf smartwatch for the serious puttist. The S42 has gnarly fitness-watch styling, meaning it's a world away from the oft-copied squircle design of the Apple Watch. It has a 1.2-inch color screen, which is easy enough to read, and it comes with 42,000 different golf courses pre-loaded. You can also use it to track your shots and can even integrate with a dedicated golf club sensor for better data. Plus, you know, it’s a Garmin, so you’ll get basic smartwatch notifications, fitness tracking and a battery that will outlast your phone five times over. Buy Garmin Approach S42 at Amazon - $300
SteelSeries Apex Pro
Tumblr media
SteelSeries Parents can be fussy and obsessive — at least, some of our parents, anyway. Thankfully, Steelseries makes a keyboard catered to persnickety types, with electrically controlled actuation that does away with the notion of swapped switches. The Apex Pro is a pricey gaming keyboard for people who crave the sort of customizability few others could dream about. (And don’t worry, you can disable the rainbow lights if dad isn’t a capital-g Gamer.) The secret to its adjustability is the OmniPoint Adjustable Switches, which use magnetic sensors to register a key press. Keys can set that to be remarkably shallow for fast-twitch gaming, or long and deep, for the more operatic typists out there. A small OLED display at the end of the function row enables you to store various profiles and switch between them without the use of a desktop software manager, too. Apple iPad Air
Tumblr media
Apple Apple’s newest iPad Air splits the difference very neatly between the beautifully affordable iPad and the iPad Pro. The tablet packs a 10.9-inch display and Apple’s A14 Bionic system-on-chip, offering the sort of performance that iPad Pro users have been boasting about. Even better, the unit comes with a USB-C port, enabling you to connect any compatible accessories you have lying around. And, of course, buying an iPad over a generic Android tablet can save you plenty of time in tech support, especially if your parents aren’t the savviest. Buy iPad Air at Amazon - $599
Roku Streambar
Tumblr media
Roku Plenty of people spend a lot of time pondering the best and biggest TV their living room (and wallets) can handle, but they often spend less time on the audio portion of their setup. If your dad is guilty of this, the Roku Streambar can elevate the sound of his home theater system. The Streambar is roughly the size of an egg carton so it’ll fit into almost any setup, and the installation is basically plug-and-play. Inside you'll find the same streaming tech as the Roku Ultra, so it could also turn your dad’s previous “dumb” TV into a smart one. The audio quality is decidedly better than most TV internal speakers, while the Streambar doubles as a Bluetooth speaker, so dad can cast tunes to it when he’s not watching classic movies. It also comes with a voice remote that, with a few setting changes, can be used to control the TV as well. Buy Roku Streambar at Amazon - $130
Anova Precision Oven
Tumblr media
Anova If your dad is a cooking nerd, or wants to become one, you might consider splurging on Anova’s Precision Oven. It’s a combination convection-and-steam oven that can cook your food in either wet or dry heat, with precise controls over the humidity and temperature. Despite looking like a shopping channel toaster oven, Anova is pitching this at the sort of folks who want to customize how their food is cooked. As a baker, it’s the sort of thing I’d love to own purely since you can fine-tune the steam injection to form a better crust on your loaves. (It’s probably safer than throwing a cup of water onto the bottom deck of your oven when you put the dough in, too.) Plus, with a built-in thermometer you can let the system keep an eye on the conditions to ensure your meat dishes are cooked to perfection. And, of course, this is Anova, so you can also do a “bagless sous-vide” and show off to all of your friends about how you can do fancy French cheffery. Buy Precision Oven at Anova - $599
