I just want to no longer exist
No matter how hard I try to logic my way to keep living, the reasons to stick around are dwindling fast. When your fellow humans decide that money is more valuable than lives, it's hard to see a way out of all of this without a lot of suffering. I've had enough suffering in my life for several lifetimes.
My husband has a job, but lives in a hotel because we can't find a place to live because he fucked up our finances SO BADLY that nobody wants to rent to us. We have the money. The past is the problem. I don't want to be touched by him, or anyone for that matter, because the thought of human touch makes me cringe. I never used to be like this.
I started perimenopause at age 34 because I was exposed to too much PFAS because Dupont invented teflon down the road. Having a hypersensory processing disorder makes every day a living nightmare because my body is a beachball, my senses are fucked up, my hormones are doing stupid shit, and there are zero resources available for people like me. I have nerve damage in my face which makes me want to cut my head off, but doctors won't give me adequate pain management despite no issues with compliance. I moved, and new doctors wouldn't continue my medication because they were uncomfortable with it. I am uncomfortable every minute of every day. Even my dreams are filled with pain... when I can get sleep.
The world is on fire, in so many ways. While there are glimmers of hope, it's far too late to reverse the damage that's been done and I don't see a way out, despite my peers being among the world's most intellectually gifted people. They don't see things getting better either. Canary in a coal mine.
My family is falling apart. My aunt is giving up because her son and grandsons never communicate with her because they're "too busy". I am trying to visit my lonely relatives as much as I can because I know all too well how loneliness feels. My parents are basically adult children, with one seeing the world through rose colored glasses and the other with the social abilities of a 15 year old. My one 35 year old sister takes advantage of their kindness by hoarding in their home, paying no bills, contributing nothing despite having a job. She doesn't even pay for her rescue dog's medical bills.
If I stepped away from all of this, it wouldn't make things better. I'd feel isolated and like I'm not contributing. If I stay in it, I am guaranteed a life of more stress. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits

Europe votes in favour of legislation that forces companies to be socially responsible
Tumblr media
Did the seamstress of an upper piece of clothing that is sold in the shop for five euros receive a fair wage? And can we be sure             that the coffee we serve here isn't the result of slavery? It is extremely difficult for consumers to check this. That is why the European Parliament wants legislation to be introduced that forces companies to take action themselves against, among other things, child labour, pollution and environmental degradation throughout the entire textile production chain. "The future is assured by companies that treat people and the environment in a healthy way, not with companies whose business model is originated by environmental damage and exploitation." The European Parliament has voted in favour of legislation that requires companies to identify and, where necessary, prevent or limit the negative consequences of their activities in the field of human rights and the environment. In addition, companies must also examine the entire production & logistic chain of their product and address any abuses. The new rules apply to companies based in the EU, with more than 250 employees and a worldwide turnover of more than €40 million. Parent companies with more than 500 employees and a worldwide turnover of more than 150 million euros will also fall under the legislation. Non-EU companies that earn at least 40 million euros in European countries will also have to deal with the law. The new rules also require companies to work with people that are affected by their actions, such as human rights and environmental activists, establish a grievance mechanism and conduct regular oversight. Those who break the law can be punished, for example with a fine of at least 5 percent of net worldwide turnover.
Role of companies
The Parliament's position was adopted by 366 votes in favour and 225 against. 38 MEPs abstained from voting. “The European Parliament's support is a turning point in thinking about the role of business in society,” said Lara Wolters of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament. "A law on corporate responsibility must ensure that the future lies with companies that treat people and the environment in a healthy way, not with companies that have made a profit model from environmental damage and exploitation." According to Wolters, most companies in Europe take this 'duty to people and the environment' seriously. "We help companies with this anti-look away law. At the same time, we have cut off those few big cowboy companies that avoid the rules."
The agreement of the European Parliament for legislation in the field of ICSR (International Corporate Social Responsibility) is a 'crucial step forward', says Ingrid Thijssen of employers' organisation VNO-NCW[1]. "The Dutch business community at large has been advocating European legislation in the field of IRBC for a long time. Only through a European approach - with the same rules for companies throughout the EU - can we really make a difference worldwide in terms of environmental and human rights," she says.
VNO-NCW does believe that there is still room for improvement in the proposal to 'make the law really workable for companies'. "The legal uncertainty associated with the proposed legislation is still high." Thijssen says he hopes that the next phase of the legislative process will look at how this uncertainty can be reduced.
Amnesty International delighted Amnesty International is delighted with the vote. "The European Parliament has sent a clear signal that it will support access to justice for victims of business-related human rights violations. This is a crucial piece of legislation that will help large companies adhere to higher human rights and environmental standards" , says Hannah Storey, business and human rights policy advisor. "Those who are harmed by companies that pay too little attention to their impact on human rights and the environment often encounter major obstacles to getting justice," she says. "The European Parliament's support for this law is a welcome development." She emphasizes that Amnesty International is not yet completely satisfied with the bill as it is now. “The legislation contains some regrettable exceptions. With the current design, it would be very difficult to hold financial sector companies civilly liable for human rights violations and environmental damage.." Amnesty International calls on EU policymakers to address these 'important gaps in the continuation of the negotiations'. How is this going to continue? The legislation has come a step closer, but it is not there yet. Now that the European Parliament has taken a position, negotiations with the member states will start on the final version of the text. More clarity is expected on this later this year.
Dutch initiative law
In the meantime, legislation[2] has also started in the Netherlands in the field of ICSR. The political parties ChristenUnie, PvdA, GroenLinks, SP, D66 and Volt have drawn up an initiative law for this purpose, which is currently being considered by the House of Representatives. The initiators were already working on the law when this also became an item in Europe. "Very good that European directives are being worked on," said one of the initiators Stieneke van der Graaf (Member of the House of Representatives of the ChristenUnie) earlier. "But it has never been an option for us to wait for that. The urgency is simply too great for that. Moreover: we have to set the bar high and with that we can set an example for other countries."

[1] VNO-NCW (known in English as the "Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers") is a Dutch employers' federation founded in 1996 as a merger of the Christian-democratic Nederlands Christelijk Werkgeversverbond (NCW), which was founded as fusion of the Protestant PCW and the Catholic NKW, and the liberal Verbond van Nederlandse Ondernemingen (VNO). Both organisations had strong ties with the Protestant and liberal pillar, respectively.
[2] The International Corporate Social Responsibility Act requires companies to investigate whether there are any abuses throughout their chain. If so, they should report it and make a plan of action to do something about it. If they fail to do so, they may be fined. The initiative law of the ChristenUnie, PvdA, GroenLinks, SP, D66 and Volt forces companies to comply with the already applicable OECD guidelines for multinational companies. According to the initiators, it should be laid down by law that companies have a duty of care with regard to possible adverse consequences of their activities for human rights, labor rights and the environment in a country outside the Netherlands. The proposal is currently being considered by the House of Representatives. On 18 January this year, there was a round table discussion about the proposal for the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. In February, Ministers Micky Adriaansens (Economic Affairs) and Liesje Schreinemacher (Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation) were critical of the initiative law to RTL News. They said they fear that the new law will make the rules in the Netherlands stricter than in neighboring countries, which will not benefit the business climate. They later apologized and said they spoke "out of turn". The cabinet has not yet taken a position on the law, the House of Representatives will first have to act.
