Pierce kills Bucky's father and keeps Bucky as a slave. Several years later the captain from a rival ship (Steve) is captured by Pierce and he and Bucky fall in love

A/B/O post-winter soldier where the mask doesn't come off and the WS is brought into custody at Avengers tower by Natasha, and Steve falls in love with him without knowing he's his long-lost mate

Steve survives the war but Bucky still falls off the train. In the 50's the Winter Soldier has a mission in New York and on his way is spotted by Rebecca Barnes's daughter, who's eight and has been told all about her uncle Buck. The daughter finds it so amazing that this total stranger looks exactly like uncle Buck and pulls him along to meet Rebecca, who has a breakdown and persuades the Winter Soldier to come home with her. The Winter Soldier just kinda goes along with it because nobody's ever been nice to him and this lovely woman has promised him meatloaf and pie and for some reason he knows that he really likes meatloaf and pie. Becca calls up Steve and the Winter Soldier moves in with Steve because Becca can't look after her amnesiac brother on top of two kids and a third on the way

Big Eden Shrinkyclinks AU

My dreams look like you - Steve and Bucky used to be best friends during high school but lost contact when Steve moved away - they meet again at a mutual friend's party when Steve moves back home

Steve and Bucky used to be together and are both masked vigilantes. They have a bit of a rivalry going but the fun kind where they both kinda wanna fuck. Neither of them know who the other is.

Post WS - Steve and Sam move back to NY to be closer to the other avengers. Sam starts noticing someone following him and watching him and he soon realizes it’s Bucky. Sam starts gently trying to get Bucky to interact with him and starts buying him sweet pastries. Soon Bucky becomes more comfortable and lets Sam help him recover as long as Sam doesn’t tell Steve

(NSFW) Steve is a knight who often visits a manor house where a disgraced Lady lives. The Lady was disgraced for her promiscuous and sexual appetites, but she's comfortably set up in the Manor. Steve visits because the Manor's on a path he travels often, and it's one of the only places to rest for the night. The Lady always sends a group of her servants to service her guests, and Steve is used to this by now. Bucky is a new servant who works in the kitchen who's sent to Steve's chambers with food, and he sits by Steve's bed and hand-feeds him as Steve is serviced. Steve never takes his eyes off Bucky. Each time Steve visits after that, they manage to see each other

Bucky chooses to forget Steve and has his memory erased, because it’s too painful for him to be around Steve when he thinks that Steve doesn’t love him. A few years later Steve picks Bucky up in a bar and pretends not to know him

Prompt: My husband thinks that our parents arranged this marriage. We’ve been married for ten years now, and for ten years he has thought this. I’m not sure how to tell him that my parents wanted me to marry his older brother but I fell in love with the younger brother (my husband) so I pretended to be my parents and sent his parents a letter asking for his hand in marriage. And then the wedding invitations were being made, and it was too late for my parents to do anything. And I was very happily married to my Husband, but he courted me for two years after our marriage not knowing that I was already in love with him.

Steve falls for vet nurse and animal lover Bucky despite being allergic to pretty much all household pets and trying to hide it

Shrunkyclunks - a few dates in Steve tells Bucky he's Captain America, but Bucky doesn't believe him and thinks he's delusional. He doesn't tell Steve he doesn't believe him and has a moral crisis about whether or not he should be dating someone with such strong "delusions". Steve just thinks he's hit the jackpot with supportive boyfriends.

Pirate Captain Bucky captures Navy Captain Steve from his ship and holds him for ransom (very homoerotically) (steve is confused and horny)

Steve is a warrior in his village who's come down with a mysterious illness. The townspeople send him to the "evil" witch who lives in the forest to see if he can be healed

A Shrinkyclinks AU where Steve works at SHIELD based on the prompt “Is this the moment that we kiss?”

“Mission report?” Steve asks the Winter Soldier.

The Winter Soldier looks at him for a long moment, eyes bored, taking in what must be a wholly unimpressive office compared to what he does and, frankly, where he usually debriefs. Then he rattles off the details of his mission, which Steve takes down the best he can.

“Are you new?” the Winter Soldier asks when he’s done. “You’re shaking.”

Steve is, in fact, shaking a little. He didn’t expect the Winter Soldier to notice. “It’s from my blood sugar being low. I’m late to lunch,” Steve admits. Though, he’s not so much late for lunch as he hasn’t been able to stomach it. He was so nervous about his first debriefing with the famed Winter Soldier that he didn’t feel like he could eat a bite. Now, he’s regretting it.

He’s only been working at SHIELD for a few months, seeing if he can make a difference in the world somehow. Except, he hasn’t done much of anything until today: he’s filling in for the person who usually writes down the Winter Soldier’s mission report. If he does well, apparently he’ll be asked to do this whenever the Winter Soldier comes back from a mission. It is apparently a very big deal.

Steve doesn’t want to screw it up.

The Winter Soldier reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small chocolate bar. He hands it to Steve. “Here,” he says.

It’s non-descript, generic. The sort of thing included in SHIELD’s meal rations “Thank you,” Steve says, surprised. “But I can’t really eat this. I’m allergic to dairy.”

The Winter Soldier snorts. “I tried,” he says, taking the candy bar back. “Can I eat this, then?”

“Sure.”

He rips open the packaging with his teeth then eats the small bar in a few tidy bites. “Almost forgot last time. They didn’t save it for after.”

A little distracted, Steve nods. “Good thing you’re eating it now.”

“Yeah.” He stares at Steve for a long moment and says, “You have nice hair.”

“What?” Steve asks, a little shocked. His hand self-consciously flies up to his hair to see what’s wrong with it.

The Soldier’s brow furrows, like he’s confused at Steve’s skepticism. “It’s nice. Shiny.”

He realizes that the Winter Soldier… isn’t making fun of him. “Oh.” He drops his hand. “Thanks. I guess I’m just not used to people saying nice things about it,” he says with a chuckle.

“People should say nice things about it.” The Soldier deposits his candy wrapper in the trash, then sighs. “See you next time,” he says.

“Yeah, sure,” Steve says, already looking forward to it a little bit.

“Everyone says he’s so scary and awful. He barely says a word to anyone,” one of Steve’s coworkers says later that day.

“He said he likes my hair,” Steve says.

His coworker just stares at him, then laughs. “Nice joke, Steve,” he says, slapping on the back just this side of too hard.

Steve laughs, too. Though, it’s not a joke.

It’s another six months until Steve sees the Soldier again.

He’s just come from medical treatment this time, a large cut on the side of his face. “Are you okay?” Steve asks, standing up from behind his desk, concerned.

The Winter Soldier blinks, his hand going up to gently prod at the cut. “I’m… fine?” he says, sounding like a question. “It will be longer before I can go back in, but it’s fine.”

Steve can relate to that; he’d been out of commission himself with a sprained ankle for a few weeks after he fought with a guy who’d been giving a girl a hard time in a bar.

Still, there’s something about seeing the Soldier hurt that Steve… doesn’t like. He’s spent a lot of time between their last meeting and this one reading up on the scant information available to him about the Soldier and just thinking about him. His coworkers all have some horror story or another about him, which didn’t fit with the image of a guy who gave Steve his chocolate bar and complimented his hair. None of what Steve’s found out would make him think that the Soldier’s nice. But he was. Maybe he still is.

“Well, take a seat,” Steve says, gesturing to the seat on the opposite side of his desk. The Soldier hesitates for a long moment, then does. “Can I get you anything? Do you need ice? Or a soda or something?”

The Soldier hesitates a moment. He looks around Steve’s office for a moment. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had a Coke,” he says, voice quiet, nearly croaking.

Steve nods, then turns to the mini fridge he’s got in the corner of his office. He has a few Cokes stashed in there for when he needs a quick sugar fix. He’s happy to pull one out and present it to the Soldier.

The Soldier smiles, really smiles and it’s bright. “Thank you,” he says, grinning as he pops the tab of the Coke. He takes a small sip, then a larger one. “It’s great,” he says. “Thanks,” he adds, like he hadn’t already said it.

“No problem,” Steve says, a little confused as to why a can of Coke is bringing him this much happiness, but not questioning it. The Soldier looks really good when he’s happy. “You have beautiful eyes,” he finds himself blurting out.

“I do?” the Soldier asks.

Steve nods. “They’re very blue.”

He grins again. “Thanks,” he says, then takes another sip of Coke.

Later, Steve will wonder when it was that he started falling in love with the Soldier. He thinks maybe this was the moment.

Three years. Eighteen meet-ups. It takes that long before Steve’s supervisor tells him he’s ready takes him to the cryo chamber, shows him where the Soldier is stored, where he’s kept on ice like one of the Cokes in his fridge, ignored except in case of emergency.

He thought the Soldier had a home, a life, an existence outside of the work that he does for SHIELD.

Steve was wrong.

He gets access to the records he was never allowed to see. Instead of marveling at SHIELD’s ability to eliminate threats, all he sees is the torture, the pain, the way that the Soldier has been used and abused since World War II.

He reads that the soldier’s name is James, but that he went by Bucky.

He decides that he’ll help Bucky escape.

“We don’t have time,” Steve says in lieu of explanation as Bucky stumbles from his cryogenic chamber.

“Steve?” he asks.

Steve nods. “I’m getting you out of here.”

“I want to go,” Bucky says. “I want to go with you.”

The small part of Steve that had worried that this wasn’t what Bucky wanted, that he was actually the machine that SHIELD thought he was, stops screaming at him to stop. He knew from the beginning that Bucky was just a man with a particular set of skills caught in the middle of something evil.

“Okay, let’s—”

Bucky grabs his hand and pulls Steve to him. “Is this the moment that we kiss?” he asks.

“We don’t have much time. The cameras will only be disabled for so long.”

“Then I’ll make it quick,” Bucky says, moving his head down to kiss Steve. His lips are cold. “Thank you,” he whispers against Steve’s lips. “I’ve been dreaming of this. Of you.”

“Me too,” Steve admits, then takes Bucky’s hand. They have an escape to make; they can dream when they’re done.

Did you write more fic this year than you thought you would, less, or about what you’d predicted?

Way, way more! Seriously, I had no idea I could write this much before this year!

What’s your own favorite story of this year?

Definitely Ballad of the Thundering Heart. I loved it from the very beginning. Everything was just so amazing and felt so natural. I was able to explore so much, from beginning relationships, to past abuse, to paganism, and (unexpectedly) polyamory. It was so much fun to write, too!

Did you take any writing risks this year?

Yes! Writing a story that suddenly turned polyamorous was kinda scary, not gonna lie. Also, writing a/b/o, a trope that I’ve enjoyed for a long time, but never really thought to try until this year. Both turned out pretty well, honestly.

Do you have any fanfic goals for this year?

Yes! I’m wanna write a Stucky Werewolf AU fic, a Thundershield Merman AU fic, a MCU/Assassin’s Creed crossover story, finish my current WIPs, and write a shrinkyclinks sugar daddy story. I have many, many goals. We’ll see if I manage to achieve them all.

What was...

My best story of the year:

Definitely Ballad of the Thundering Heart. Nothing since then has had quite the same feel of it. I’m definitely biased, though.

My most popular story of the year:

Again, Ballad of the Thundering Heart, if we’re going by kudos, though Who Says You Can Never Go Home Again? got way more comments and a lot of traffic overall.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe (in my opinion):

I’m definitely going to have to say A Prince’s Burden. That entire ship is under-appreciated, though. I thought it was good and sweet and kinky and I wish the Final Fantasy XV fandom appreciated Gladnoct more.

Most fun story to write:

Ballad of the Thundering Heart. Honestly, I really have no idea how I’m ever going to top that story.

Hardest story to write:

I’m definitely going to have to say Who Says You Can Never Go Home Again? Pregnancy is weird and hard and being someone who will never have to go through it makes the whole writing it aspect both interesting and really difficult.

Biggest Disappointment:

I was really disappointed by the very small amount of reaction that Holiday Blues received. I think it deserves more love.

Favorite Opening Lines:

The throne room of Asgard was large and ornate. Vaulting pillars held up a mosaic ceiling depicting the history of their world. Sunlight streamed in through large arches that led out to the balconies overlooking the city. It was easily more beautiful than any official court on earth. Steve had gaped at it all every time he entered the room for days. Now, with conscious effort, he was able to avoid looking like a tourist.

Which was especially important, today of all days. Odin had died about 2 months ago. Now Thor was to be crowned King-Regnant of Asgard. Steve hadn’t seen him in about a week and so hadn’t seen Thor in his coronation garments. The only thing Steve has heard about it from Frigga and Loki was that they will be stunning.

If the throne room is anything to go by, that’s probably an understatement, Steve thought. The throne room was filled with people standing and milling around the sides of the room. All of them were dressed in plumage and regalia that put any human sovereign to shame. If they were humans, Steve would have thought of them as a flock of peacocks trying desperately to attract the attention of those with power and prestige.

They still might be, Steve mused. After all, he knew nothing of Asgardian politics. He’d never asked and Thor never brought it up.

Well, that wasn’t, strictly speaking, accurate. Steve did know one thing. His own outfit marked him as new king’s official consort. Not husband, for reasons of future inheritance, but it still labelled Steve as Thor’s lover and the one who was favored by Thor. Thor explained that even should he marry in the future, all the court would know that Steve was the one who was the recipient of Thor’s affections. It was, effectively, one of the most powerful positions in Thor’s court. Not that Steve cared about such things. He just wanted Thor in whatever capacity he could have him.

Favorite closing lines:

“How’d I do?” Steve asked.

“I thought you did great,” Bucky said. “That last guy was way out of line.”

Steve rolled his eyes. “Honestly, I’m glad Sam’s becoming Cap, but especially because people like that guy will have to get used to saying referring to a black beta man as ‘Captain America’.”

“If I knew you were so eager to rock the boat, I woulda suggested this a long time ago,” Sam said with a grin. “I make this shield look good.”

Bucky rolled his eyes and flipped Sam off. Sam just laughed softly so as to not wake the babies who seemed to enjoy the sound of tv. At least, it got them to sleep for a bit. If it got them to sleep at night, Bucky would buy them the biggest, fanciest tv out there.

“So what now?” Bucky asked. Steve wrapped his free arm around Bucky’s waist and pulled him close.

“Now, we go home,” he said.

I'm in a weird writing headspace right now, which means it's probably the right time to reflect and be nice to myself. But it's haaaaard, wah. Well, here we go in no particular order:

You are here (cacw; canon-compliant)

20,000 words on why oh why Bucky hides from Steve, why Steve is such a big meanie to him all movie, and making them talk and hug about it. (Among other things.) I kind of wish I could replicate how it felt to write this one. I was just having a lot of fun with absolutely no plan, pressure, or expectations for myself.

Head in the sky (canon-divergent Cold War shrinkyclinks)

Everything on this list is self-indulgent but, whew, this really made (1) me happy. Featuring: a determined bossy Steve, a lost yet competent little soldier, and the both of them against a world, babey. Held together with a big helping of mutual protectiveness and devotion, naturally.

The more things change (WWII, post-bar scene)

I wrote this a while ago now, but there's something about the tightness of the story/plot that still makes me happy on rereads.

And you, you must’ve been looking for me (post-canon Brooklyn boys)

Maybe someday I’ll finish a long fic, but until then I’m much more confident in getting an idea across with as few words as I can get away with. There are not a lot of words in this one, but I like the ones I picked and they all work pretty hard, I think. Also I clearly need to put this on ao3 because it took forever to find what even is a tumblr blog.

Till there were no more wolves in the West (western + historical AU)

Speaking of longer fics I'd sure like to finish... What can I say, it's my most favorite of the bunch. Probably because it is so very specific to my interests in hyper-competent battle boyfriends, doomed promises, feeling unworthy of love (and being proven wrong), and also American myths and misremembered history. I first-drafted the epilogue last week and I'm feeling a little misty eyed about it.

Hello!!! My day is chugging right along, probably because I have a pizza order and some live music waiting for me at the end of the workday!

I would be delighted to talk about these two, it makes me so, so happy that you like this world.

Part three! Contents include: More controlled explosions, some familiar faces, the Hungarian Revolution, and recovered memories because it's a Bucky POV yay. I'm a little nervous because it's told in reverse chronological order, which is fun for me to try from a technical perspective, but will it be fun to read 😬? I very much hope so!

Here is a snippet for you! It is apparently angst o'clock over here.

Steve is lying propped up on a pillow, mouth pinched and brows drawn tight, but as soon as he sees Bucky his whole face opens up. “Did you find…is it done?” Bucky can’t meet Steve’s eyes right now so he follows the sharp, vulnerable outline of his collarbones, visible under his half-buttoned shirt. Like he’d tried to get dressed and had to take a break halfway through. Bucky heaves a great big breath and buries his face in Steve’s lap. There’s still debris in Bucky’s hair and on his tac vest, but Steve rests a hand on his head anyway. The other on his shoulder. “Can we go over the mission report?” he asks gently. Bucky squeezes too hard around Steve’s middle instead, breathes him in. They took you away from me, he thinks.
