GIFMAKING TUTORIAL: PHOTOPEA (for Windows)

Finally I recommend browsing the PHOTOPEA TUTORIAL / PHOTOPEA TUTORIAL GIF tags. DISCLAIMER: English is not my first language and I'm not an expert on what I'm going to discuss, so if anything's unclear feel free to drop another ask.

1. SCREENCAPPING -> PotPlayer (the one I use) or MVP or KMPlayer

INSTALL PotPlayer (tutorial)

Play your movie/episode and press Ctrl + G. The Consecutive Image Capturer window will pop up. Click Start to capture consecutive frames, Stop when you got what you needed.

Where it says "Image Type -> Format" I recommend picking PNG, for higher quality screencaps.

To access the folder where the screencaps are stored, type %appdata% in windows search, open the PotPlayerMini64 folder (or 32, depending on your system) and then the Capture folder. That's where you'll find your screencaps.

Admittedly MVP is a lot faster but I prefer Potplayer because it generates (at least in my case) higher quality screencaps. MVP kind of alters the hue and it made it harder for me to color my gifs. Still, if you're interested in how to use it, I recommend this tutorial.

As for KMPlayer, every tutorial out there is outdated and I couldn't figure out the new version of the software.

2. GIF WIDTH/HEIGHT, SIZE LIMIT, EZGIF OPTMIZER

At this point you should already know how big your gifs are going to be. Remember the ideal gif width(s) on tumblr are 540 px / 268 px / 177 px. These specific numbers take into account the 4 px space between the gifs. No restrictions on height. Here are some examples:

You can play around with the height (177x400, 177x540, 268x200, 268x268, 268x350, 268x400, 540x440, 540x500, 540x540 etc) but if you go over the 10 MB limit you'll either have to make your gifs smaller/delete some frames.

OR you can go on ezgif and optimize your gif, which is usually what I do. The quality might suffer a little, but I'm not really (that) obsessed with how crispy my gifs look, or I'd download photoshop.

Depending on the gif size, you can decrease the compression level. I've never had to go over 35. It's better to start at 5 (minimum) and then go from there until you reach your desired ( <10mb) gif size. Now that I think about it I should have included this passage at the end of the tutorial, I guess I'll just mention it again.

3. LOAD YOUR FRAMES

File -> Open... -> Pick one of your screencaps. The first one, the last one, a random one. Doesn't matter. That's your Background.

File -> Open & Place -> Select all the frames (including the one you already loaded in the previous passage) you need for your gif and load them.

(I recommend creating a specific folder for the screencaps of each gif you're going to make.)

WARNING: When you Place your screencaps make sure the Crop tool is NOT selected, especially if you've already used it and the width/height values have been entered. It will mess things up - I don't know why, could be a bug.

You can either select them all with Ctrl+A or with the method I explained in the ask: "when you want to select more than one frame or all frames at once select the first one, then scroll to the bottom and, while pressing Shift, select the last one. this way ALL your frames will be selected".

WARNING: Depending on how fast your computer is / on your RAM, this process may take a while. My old computer was old and slow af, while my new one can load even a 100 frames relatively fast, all things considered. Even so, I recommend ALWAYS saving your work before loading new frames for a new gif, because photopea might crash unexpectedly. Just save your work as often as you can, even while coloring or before exporting. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Now you can go ahead and delete the Background at the bottom, you won't need it anymore.

4. CROPPING AND RESIZING

Right now your screencaps are still smart objects. Before rasterizing and converting to frames, you need to crop your gif.

Technically you can rasterize/convert to frames and then crop, BUT if you do it in that order photopea will automatically delete the cropped pixels, even if you don't select the "Delete Cropped Pixels" Option. Might be another bug, unclear. Basically, if you crop your gif and then realize you cropped a little too much to the left or the right, you can go ahead, select the Move Tool (shortcut: V) and, after selecting ALL YOUR FRAMES, move them around on your canvas until you are satisfied. You won't be able to do this if you rasterize first and then crop, the excess pixels will be deleted. I don't know why, I found out by accident lol.

CROPPING

(Cropped pixels: the gray/opaque area outside of the selected area. That area disappears once you press enter and crop, but the pixels are retained, so you can move the frames around and reposition them as you like. In this case I could move the frames to the left and include Silver's figure [curly guy in the foreground] in the crop)

After deleting the Background, you will need to select all your frames (using the Shift key), use the C shortcut on your keyboard to choose the Crop tool. Or you can click on it, whatever's more convenient. Once you do that, a dropdown menu is going to appear. You need to select the "FIXED SIZE" option, as shown in the following screencap.

Once you do that, you can type in your desired width and height. Do not immediately press enter.

Your work area should now look like this. Now you can click on one of the white squares and enlarge the selected area until the edges are lined up. You can then move it around until it covers the area you wish to gif.

WARNING: to move the big rectangle around, you're gonna have to click on a random point of the work area, PREFERABLY not to close to the rectangle itself, or you might accidentally rotate it.

See? When your cursor is close to the selected area it turns into this rotating tool. Move it away until it reverts to your usual cursor, then you can start moving the rectangle. Press Enter when you're satisfied with the area you selected.

RESIZE

This isn't always necessary (pretty much never in my case) - and it's a passage I often forget myself - but it's mentioned in most of the tutorials I came across over the years, so I'd be remiss if I didn't include it in mine. After cropping, you'll want to resize your image.

IMAGE -> Image Size...

This window will pop up. Now, should the values in the Width and Height space be anything other than 540 and 400 (or the values you entered yourself, whatever they might be) you need to correct that. They've always been correct in my case, but again. Had to mention it.

5. RASTERIZE & MAKE FRAMES

Now that your screencaps are cropped, you can go ahead and convert them.

LAYER -> Rasterize (if you skip this passage you won't be able to Sharpen (or use any filter) on your frames at once. You'll have to Sharpen your frames one by one.

Photopea doesn't feature a timeline and it's not a video editor, which makes this passage crucial. When you select all your smart objects and try to apply a filter, the filter will only by applied to ONE frame. Once you rasterize your smart objects and make them into frames, you can select them all and sharpen them at once. Unfortunately this also means that you won't be able to - I don't know how to explain this properly so bear with me - use all smart filters/use them in the same way a photoshop user can. For example, you can sharpen / remove noise / add noise / unsharp mask... but you can't act on those filters in the same way a photoshop user can. When you work on smart objects you can change the blend mode - which is critical if you decide to use a filter like High Pass. If you simply apply a high pass filter on photopea you won't be able to change the blend mode and your gif will look like this (following screencaps). Or rather, you will be able to change the blend mode by clicking on the little wheel next to "High pass" (circled in green in the 2nd screencap), but you'll have to apply the filter to each frame manually, one by one.

Then you can rasterize/make into frames, but it's extremely time consuming. I did it once or twice when I first started making gifs and it got old pretty soon haha.

Layer -> Animation -> Make frames. This passage will add "_a_" at the beginning of all your frames and it's what allows you to make a (moving) gif. As I said in the ask, if you skip this passage your gif will not move.

6. SHARPENING

Some people prefer to color first and sharpen later, but I found that sharpening filters (more or less) dramatically alter the aspect of your gif and already brighten it a bit (depending on your settings) and you may end up with an excessively bright gif.

Now, sharpening settings are not necessarily set in stone. The most popular ones are 500/0.4 + 10/10, which I use sometimes. But you may also need to take into account the quality of the files you're working with + the specific tv show you're giffing. I've been using different settings for pretty much every tv show I gif, especially in the last couple months. Some examples:

AMOUNT: 500% RADIUS 0.3px followed by AMOUNT: 20% (or 10%) RADIUS 10px

You'll just need to experiment and see what works best for your gifs.

Some gifmakers use the UNSHARP MASK filter as well (I think it's pretty popular among photopea users?) but it makes my gifs look extra grainy, makes the borders look super bright and it clashes with my coloring method(s), so I use it rarely and with very moderate settings. Something like this:

Again, depends on the gif and on what you like. I've seen it used with great results by other gifmakers!

REDUCE NOISE

Sometimes - and this is especially the case for dark scenes - your gif may look excessively grainy, depending on how bright you want to make it. Reducing noise can help. Keep it mind, it can also make it worse and mess up the quality. BUT it also reduces the size of your gif. Obviously, the higher the settings, the more quality will suffer.

These are my standard settings (either 2/70% or 2/80%). It's almost imperceptible, but it helps with some of the trickier scenes.

ADDING NOISE

Adding noise (1% or 2% max) can sometimes help with quality (or make it worse, just like reduce noise) but it will make your gif so so so much bigger, and occasionally damage the frames, which means you won't be able to load your gif on tumblr, so I rarely use it.

You'll also want to create ACTIONS which will allow you to sharpen your gifs much faster.

HOW TO CREATE AN ACTION ON PHOTOPEA

The Action Button (shaped like a Play button as you can see in the following screencaps) may not be there if you're using photopea for the first time. If that's the case click on the magnifiying glass next to "Account" (in red) and type "actions". Press Enter and the button should immediately show up.

Once you do that, click on the Folder (circled in yellow)

and rename it however you like.

now click on New Action (circled in red). now you can press the Recording button (circled in green)

Now

FILTERS -> Smart Sharpen

and you can enter your values. Then you repeat this passage (WITHOUT pressing rec, WITHOUT pressing new action or anything else, you just open the smart shapen window again) and, if you want, you can sharpen your gif some more (10%, 10px, or anything you want.)

Maybe, before creating an action, experiment with the settings first and see what works best.

When you're satisfied, you can PRESS STOP (it's the rec button, which is now a square) and you can DOWNLOAD your action (downwards facing arrow, the last button next to the bin. Sorry, forgot to circle it) .

You need to download your action and then upload it on your photopea. When you do, a window will pop up and photopea will ask you whether you wish to load the action every time you open the program. You choose "Okay" and the action will be loaded in the storage.

When you want to sharpen your gif, you select all your frames, then you click on the Play button, and select the Action, NOT the folder, or it won't work.

Actions can also be created to more rapidly crop and convert your frames, but it doesn't always work on photopea (for me at least). The process is exactly the same, except once you start recording you 1) crop your gif as explained in step 4, 2) convert into frames. Then you stop the recording and download the action and upload it. This won't work for the Rasterize step by the way. Just the Animation -> Make Frame step.

7. COLORING

Now you can color your gif. I won't include a coloring tutorial simply because I use a different method for every tv show I gif for. You normally want to begin with a brightness or a curve layer, but sometimes I start with a Channel Mixer layer to immediately get rid of yellow/green filters (there's a tutorial for this particular tool which you will find in the list I mention in the link below)

[Plus I'm not really an authority on this matter as my method is generally... fuck around and find out. Two years of coloring and I still have no idea what I'm doing. 70% of the time.]

8. EXPORTING

Now you can export your gif. Some gifmakers export their (sharpened) gifs BEFORE coloring and then load the gifs on photopea to color them. I'm not sure it makes any difference.

FILE -> EXPORT AS -> GIF

(not colored, just sharpened)

As you can see, unlike photoshop the exporting settings are pretty thread bare. The only option available is dither - it sometimes help with color banding - which, and I'm quoting from google for maximum clarity:

"refers to the method of simulating colors not available in the color display system of your computer. A higher dithering percentage creates the appearance of more colors and more detail in an image, but can also increase the file size."

SPEED

When you export your gif, it will play at a very decreased speed (100%). I usually set it at 180/190%, but as for every other tool, you might want to play around a little bit.

GIF SIZE/EZGIF OPTIMIZER (See Step 2)

And that's it.

P.S.: worth repeating

Save your work as often as you can, even while coloring or before exporting.

i decided to try my hand at designing a uniform for the ramshackle dorm ! personally very happy with how it turned out:)

general notes

same top hat and cloak as the ghosts - the cloak has ripped and frayed hem for that "ramshackle" look

dark makeup around eyes and on lips to have that sunken eyes ghost look: black eyeshadow and optional blue highlights around eyes + black/dark blue lipstick

white dress shirt + pants + shoes to emulate the white bedsheet ghosts of ramshackle

ruffles at the hem and back of the dress shirt are long and flowy to emulate the ghost tail so the students have a similar silhouette to the ghosts

shared design between dorm leader and dorm member

dark blue top hat

dress shirt all have the same collar and ruffles by the throat

black sleeve garter on both arms

buttons have ruffles only to the right (my right, their left)

dress shirt opens midway into an upside down V-shape

white dress pants with blue waistbands + the inside of the pockets are dark blue with lighter blue stripes + pocket stitching in dark blue x-shape

shoes are all primarily white with black and gold accents + golden buttons on the outside-side

unique to dorm leader

sleeves are actually shorter but with more elaborate ruffles: no cuff + ends at around midway on the forearm and flares into frills - two layers of ruffles

dress shirt hem flows into ruffles which covers the pants pockets and extends all the way to the back -> the frilled hems also have 2 layers -> the 2nd layer of ruffles (under) split into 2 "ghost tails"

pant legs are tucked inside the boots

boots that extend mid-lower leg, layered with white pleats with golden accents + 6 buttons on the outside + black body + golden sole + black strap with golden accent that goes under the shoe

customisation ideas for dorm members

same top hat + ruffles around the throat + collar as dorm leader

possible customisation for the cloak -> for kat, same cloak as yuu h. -> potential cloak idea: cape that splits halfway in the middle in an upside down V-shape for extra flowiness

dress shirt has frills but not as ornate as dorm leader

sleeves have frills but not as distinctive -> for kat, long cuff with 4 buttons, and ends with short pleats. -> potential sleeve idea would be like epel's school uniform

dress shirt hem opens like dorm leader but no ruffles in the front so pants pocket details are visible

dress shirt has long flowy ruffles for the "ghost tail" at the back only -> only 1 "tail" -> only 1 layer -> shape of actual ruffles is highly customisable, can be anything as long as it's long enough -> for kat, the "tail" slopes to one side, short on the left (my left, their right) and becomes long on the right -> potential "tail" idea: can be uniform/symmetrical

pant legs can be tucked into the shoe or not, depending on the shoe itself n personal choice -> for kat, pants are not tucked in -> pants hem can be flared into additional ruffles if so desired

choices for shoes is open to most styles as long as the colours and layered appearance remains more or less the same -> for kat, ankle boots with the same colour and pleating as yuu -> potential shoes idea: can be dress shoes, taller boots, school shoes, etc...

My prices are flexible, meaning that if a design or composition is more/less detailed, the price of the commission will fluctuate. Below are examples of painted commissions that I would price differently than my baseline of £55.

Here is a past painted commission for a friend, totalling to £65. Painted works for profile pictures, bust shots, halfbody shots etc would be priced lower, such as this halfbody shot of my oc Bam. As a commission, this would cost £40.

I also am open for character sheet commissions ! My baseline price is £35 for something similar to the character sheet pictured below, but for more detail, a drawn background etc prices could fluctuate.

"You tripled your winnings?!"

It's not like you had room to talk—you were seconds from risking all of your cogs for one crystal. Still, the fact that Viktor not only placed bets much higher than what he needed and won surprised you.

"Well yes. Some degree of risk is necessary for all the marbles."

"For all the—." Your face crinkles up at his sentence. You hadn't heard that idiom in ages, but can't deny that it's incredibly endearing coming from him. "I didn't take you for a high-risk, high-reward fiend, but you've been proving me wrong all night boat-boy."

"Fiend?" He turns his head over his shoulder at you on the stairs when he speaks, eyes alight with feigned offense behind his reasoning. "Excuse me, but there is a festival tomorrow. What if we see something we like?" His voice becomes more and more lighthearted as you get further away from the tavern. "Or what if we want to grab breakfast?"

You open your mouth to answer as you meet at the top of the stairs only for Viktor to lean towards you with a sly grin. Stopping you as you are, he plays with the 'what if' that he knew would pique your interest the most. "Or coffee?"

A chuckle escapes you as you follow him all the way down the hall to the last room on the right. "I just radiate that 'addicted to stimulants' vibe, huh?"

Viktor's shoulders flutter as he holds in his laugh, turning the skeleton key in the lock until the door to your room creaks open.

"More of ehh...'not a morning person' theory."

"Fair assessment." You peek over his shoulder and the reality of you sharing a room together starts to sink in, beckoning the theory to be returned. "Areee you a morning person?"

"I suppose you'll find out." Viktor cracks a cheeky smile before holding the door open, gesturing you through with an open palm. "After you."

It immediately becomes clear why this room costs more cogs than you've ever considered spending for a night out. While it certainly still wasn't a Piltie-approved level of quality, it was decidedly nicer than anything you'd find on your side of town.

Lamps and lanterns illuminate the space with a warm, comfy glow. Stone walls give way to three frosted windows overlooking the river with snow now falling steadily outside. A wood-burning stove lies in a library nook with two arm chairs and footrests surrounding it, and with the washroom door wide open you can make out a large tub that is already calling your name.

Despite the massive amount of square footage, the room has a cozy charm similar to that of your studio. But the charm isn't the only similarity...and you both seem to notice at the same time. A stillness in the air settles as you look on towards the single, sizeable bed weighing heavy in the middle of the room.

Viktor's mind is on the same wavelength as he examines the sleeping situation with you. "Will this be....ah..." Dead air lifts with a soft click of the door closing from behind as he steps up next to you, eyes apologetic when they meet yours. "Is this a...suitable arrangement for you?"

Your mouth suddenly feels dry and your heart pounds relentlessly at the thought of sharing a bed with him. "Oh, uh—" The tremble in your tone forces you to lick your lips and clear your throat to revive your arid as fuck vocal cords. You see Viktor's eyes darting around the bed—some uncertainty showing through while he considers your hesitation.

You could kick yourself for smoking that cigar right about now. Your lungs are in abject rebellion and you quickly try to swallow the cough threatening your ability to answer.

The faintest hint of concern just breaches Viktor's expression before his mind gets to work. A quick tilt of his head paired with the flick of his brow serving as a tell that he has a thought to pitch. "I could ask the staff if there's a rollaway—a cot perhaps?" You notice his tone dip at the end of his suggestion, eyes shifting cautiously back to you.

You swallow again, keeping your eyes on the bed so you can answer him honestly despite the risk of coming off too strong. "No..." The rasp that tinges your voice gives Viktor some insight into you trying to bite back a cough, rather than being unsure of what you wanted. "Unless you uh...want me on a cot again?" You glance back his way, anxious about if he would want a repeat of your last sleepover's arrangements. Gods only know what kind of sounds came out of your mouth that night. And you couldn't blame him if he wanted some space from...all of that.

"Hm." The hum he suppresses sounds more like a muted laugh and causes the corner of his mouth to quirk slightly. His warm gaze subtly trails down your body before taking his turn to look forward so he can also speak from with conviction.

"If I'm being completely honest," His eyebrows raise, a shallow inhale parting his lips before he speaks again. "I didn't want you on a cot the first time." He turns his head to face you again, his vulnerability at the forefront of his features. You watch brows become heavy, falling and knitting together as he tries to remain composed despite the growing anticipation you could see rising in him.

"You—?" His words easily pull your full attention and he meets your gaze just as eagerly. "That wouldn't have been too fast for you?" A small shake of his head interrupts his otherwise stone-still stance. And although uncertainty visibly sinks into his frame, he holds his voice steady as he answers you.

"No..." The pause he allows gives you time to contemplate his wishes, to feel them align with your own. Your breathing feels heavier than tar on your windpipes, but you couldn't be bothered by it anymore. Not when Viktor is openly stating that he would've slept next to you from the very beginning. That he wanted to sleep next to you from the very beginning.

"There are occasions where I prefer to take my time. Circumstances that require...extra attention." The way his accent dances with his words, the falling intonation in his voice creating such a sultry sound—it was hard to ignore the reactions his implications were having on you. "But when it comes to the potential of being closer to you...time has no place there."

For a moment you stay still. You've never had someone talk to you quite like that. Someone who threw the concept of comfort zones out the window if it meant risk-taking could lead to time well spent.

You've never had someone's words move you in a way like Viktor's could. And although his words scared the hell out of you...

"Is this all too fast for you, [Y/n]?"

...You felt the same way.

"It's not too fast for me now...it wasn't too fast for me then."

Viktor leans a little closer at your response, a wave of relief visibly washing over him as his shoulders slacken and the grip on his cane loosens considerably. His hand barely grazes against your leg and catches his attention. Turning towards you, nimble fingers ghost over the side of your pants before his expression turns empathetic.

Yeah. You're still a damp mess.

"You're soaked." He murmurs softly, concern laced in his voice as he looks towards the washroom. Your eyes follow his and your stomach leaps at the thought of sharing more than the bed tonight. "How does a bath sound?" In the amount of time that it took to get your heart to stop trying to kill you, you come to find that your interpretation isn't quite what he meant after his gaze shifts to the wood-burning stove. "I can get a fire started and will return shortly."

"Oh, you're...leaving?" You try to sound curious, but it was hard to curb the hint of disappointment trickling into your voice.

"Only for a moment." He reassures you with a small grin before starting to bundle up the kindling for the stove. "You won't even notice I'm gone."

"I doubt that." You lock eyes and give him a small smile which he returns almost timidly, flashing the smallest bit of teeth before looking away with a breathy chuckle.

You could easily get used to seeing him like that.

Viktor lights the stove with ease, cracking one of the windows just slightly to keep the room from overheating. Once he takes off for...wherever the hell he's going, you make your way to the washroom.

After running the water, you unlatch the buckles and straps of your holsters and set the salve on a small table by the bed along with the rest of your cogs and...a completely waterlogged, broken pocket watch.

"Fffuuuuck..."

No one's around to hear your frustrated groans and noisy tinkering as you try to bring the small clock back to life. Sentimental wasn't the right word for it. Despite being a gift from Remy after adopting you, the origin of where the watch actually came from was a bit of a puzzle that neither of you ever did solve...which only made breaking it more emotionally complicated.

You shed the rest of your soggy clothes off and set them near the fire to dry off, still toying with the heirloom as you try to close door to the washroom behind you with an elbow. The irony is too rich as you grumble, "Guess time really has no place here now." to yourself.

Defeated, you give up on the fixer-upper project as hot water fills the tub. You find some soap and a cloth to wash the grime from the river away, letting the tub drain until the water runs clear again.

If your pocket watch hadn't met its end, you would've known how long Viktor had been gone, but decide it couldn't hurt to draw a proper bubble bath to soak in now that you didn't reek of fish and gin.

The bite of the early winter's windchill that was so set in your bones gradually fades as you sink lower and lower under the water. Finally clear of thoughts, you lie your head back against the tub with eyes closed. Your arms splay outstretched on the edges while your chest remains just above the surface, rising and falling slowly as you begin to drift off.

Lazily, your eyes begin flutter open when you hear muffled voices approaching just outside the door of your room. Viktor's soft and even tone becoming more and more perplexed as the other voice—a woman's that you don't recognize—asks him questions that you can decipher better as they draw nearer.

"—couldn't help but overhear you needed a room. If you didn't want to share one with your...friend..."

"I beg your pardon?"

"—easy on the eyes—maybe enjoy some different company—"

"Oh."

Oh shit...it's probably that woman that was ogling him at the bar earlier. She's finally making her move. You sit up in the tub like that'll help you hear better, ears burning with curiosity about this entire situation.

"That is ehh...gracious offer, but I'm exactly where I want to be this evening."

Your heart skips a beat at his response, his words carrying certainty that dispelled any remaining insecurities you had about sharing a room, let alone a bed as the night dwindled down.

"Well...if you change your mind."

"Goodnight, miss."

Wind patterns aren't exactly your specialty. So, when Viktor opens the front door and a gust from the window causes your door to swing open, you can only look at him in shock as you slowly start to sink back down into the tub to cover up your bare chest.

This is what you get for trying to close the door with an elbow.

Viktor's wide-eyed expression mirrors yours while he tries to politely look away. His gaze subtly flicks back to you as he sets his backpack down. "Sorry, I got a bit...held up."

"I heard." You tease as you rest an elbow on the side of the tub, your torso now just barely breaching the surface of the soapy water while you try to regain some semblance of modesty.

"You—?" He glances to the door and back to you, gauging the proximity and tilting his head back and forth as he does the math of how sound carries. "Yes, I suppose you did."

"Was it the lady from the tavern?"

He quirks a clever brow at you, nodding slowly with some surprise.

"Apparently so. You saw her?"

"You didn't?"

"No, I was..." He pauses, eyes to the gods while he searches for the right word. "Preoccupied."

"What, with asking for a room?"

Viktor slowly makes his way towards you, his gaze fixed on yours as he leans against the doorframe. It almost looks like he's grappling with keeping his gaze from wandering further down as you come more into his view.

"Mm...not quite." With a sheepish grin, he swipes a thumb across his cheek a couple times, purposefully eyeing the scar you have in that very spot. Your brows furrow as you try to piece together what he's alluding to.

...Was he working up the courage to kiss your cheek? As effortless as he made that look, you're shocked it wasn't something that came easy for him.

Not expecting that response, your brows soften and lips part against your will.

Not expecting the sight that's in the doorway, you stay that way.

He must've been outside for some time—dark chestnut hair lays damp on his forehead, glistening with mostly-melted snow with cheeks flushed from the windchill...or maybe this conversation, you couldn't tell. His clothes look more soaked than yours, heavy even by the way his jacket hangs off his angular shoulders.

A grin spreads gradually across your face before you tease at him a little.

"Did you go swimming in the river too?"

"Might as well have. This blizzard has become unrelenting to say the least." Viktor starts to unbutton his coat, shifting his weight off the doorframe as he does. You try not to stare at the way he slips each button out of its confines, slowly giving way to his lithe frame beneath. "I went to the night market. I thought both of us would benefit from a change of clothes for tomorrow and ehh...tonight." His eyes flick up and down quickly on his last word before he undoes the last button.

"Tonight?" You can barely keep your enthusiasm at bay as you wonder what that means. His look of apprehension inspires you to try and lighten the mood again. "Did you get me lingerie?"

His eyes light up a little too quickly as he chuckles. "Would you like me to?" He retorts with a smirk. Maybe you're reading too much into it, but you can't help but notice that he paused from shrugging out of his jacket.

"Not if it means going back out. You look cold."

"I am."

His eyes meet yours after he answers, leaving enough unsaid for you to wonder how to read in between the lines. Slowly he turns his head towards the fire, looking almost pained to break his gaze with yours and tosses his coat near the stove where your clothes are also drying.

Long fingers weave through damp locks, shaking the residual water droplets out with a strained grin. The very motion sends your heart rate into a tizzy and you want nothing more than to ask him to join you right now.

But, that's probably too bold...too soon.

Even if time has no place here. Literally and hypothetically.

...

...Right?

The silence that passes between the two of you lingers heavy until you catch him shamelessly glancing down at your chest. The sight of him like this makes it feel like you've been hit by a freight train. When his eyes meet yours again, you decide to test the waters, your voice stuttering without end and with plenty of uncertainty.

"Do you...uh...want to..."

Viktor's brows raise slowly as your words catch in your throat, expression softening as he watches you wrestle with yourself to get the goddamn question out.

"Y'know..." You try again, motioning to the water and getting stuck again. 'What if he wants to soak alone? He did say he likes to take his time for certain things. This could very well be that...thing. What if he thinks you're out of line for even asking? Sharing a bed is night and day from sharing a bath. You're gonna freak him the fuck out. You're going to come off like a needy, open door, open legs, easy sleazy...'

May the backpedaling commence.

"I mean—or I can get out. If that's more what you...uh—I dunno—unless you—y'know...unless you...fuck." You sigh to yourself in frustration as you buckle.

But that feeling doesn't last long.

"Unless I...fuck?" Viktor's breath lingers on the last word, leaving your jaw slack with how he managed to turn your stutter into seduction when it rolls off of his tongue like that. His grin remains just as clever as his words while he takes a step towards the tub, skillfully undoing the top buttons on his shirt with one hand as he walks. "Quite the threat, don't you think?"

His words go through your ears and unfortunately straight to your dick. And you can't help but feel like the suds defending your dignity are popping at a higher rate of speed just to spite you. You can't ignore how agile his fingers are; how easily his hand works while the other stabilizes his weight. You consider the talent behind his actions, pondering if his grace can be chalked up to years of experience multitasking while using a cane...and you mentally scold yourself for wondering what else he's capable of when one hand is busy.

Your composure comes apart with each button of his shirt and you stumble as you try to explain your slip up.

"No, I didn't mean...I mean—I didn't...I can get out—let me just..." You look around for a towel and groan in frustration when you realize you never actually grabbed one.

Viktor pauses, seemingly a little shook up by your reaction. He shakes his head, a small 'o' forming on his lips as he is about to speak, but stops when he notices you looking for something. He connects the dots as you eye the pile of linens and brings one over to you.

"No, I'm sorry. Please uh..." His eyes flick curiously over the water where your abdomen dipped underneath, only to widen in horror when you catch his gaze lingering. He quickly averts his eyes, focusing on anything else in the room as he tries to drape the fabric over the side of the bath for you. "T—take your ti—ah, damn it!"

The sound of bath water splashing onto your face and over the edge echoes throughout the room as Viktor drops the towel into the tub.

You bite back an amused grin, watching quietly as the chaos unfolds in front of you.

Reflexively although unsuccessfully, Viktor reaches down in an attempt to catch it. His still-windchilled fingers glide up your bare thigh as he quickly recovers the drowning cloth out of the water. If his face wasn't so close to yours, you might not have heard his breath hitch at the sudden contact.

...Or notice the visible chill that moves through him as goosebumps begin to line the exposed skin under his loosened shirt.

He opens his mouth to speak, but the words are lost when the towel drips in obscene amounts all over your chest as he moves to lift it from the bath. Water trickles down and outlines each bend and curve of your muscles and Viktor seems to drink up the view appreciatively...until he realizes he's staring again.

The shade of red that quickly crawls up his neck and over his ears easily becomes your favorite color as you watch the level-headed and self-assured machinist become unraveled by a common bath towel.

"I'm sorry. I need to...ehm..." Wide golden eyes scan around the room frantically, a finger pressed against his arched eyebrow in distress. "...check on the...fire."

You don't get another word in...or another towel for that matter before the man retreats, closing the door behind him with a brisk slam.

You're not quite sure what just happened, but take a moment to let it sink in regardless. You've never seen Viktor that frazzled—that out of his element. Surely you couldn't have that sort of effect on him...right?

You can't help but smile at that possibility.

The stillness that follows Viktor's swift exit is only broken up by the pitter patter of snowfall on the roof, the crackling of bubbles as the water settles...and the hushed (what you assumed was) cursing from Viktor in a language you'd never heard before in the other room.

You can't help but smile about that too.

how to take screenshots using nvidia geforce experience

first off I wanna apologize for the image quality lol I had to use my phone to take a photo of my computer screen because taking screenshots would disable the GeForce Experience overlay. secondly, I’m gonna shorten it to GXP because I am Lazy.

anyways, here we go, all details under the cut so I don’t clutter anyone’s dashboard.

also I’m gonna assume you know how to pose your sim, use gshade, all that good stuff, cuz that’s not what I’m here for, there are plenty of other tutorials for those, love you tho.

so we wanna start off with pulling up the overlay with Alt + Z, and it’s gonna look like this:

so these are all the things you can go with GXP, take screenshots, record, etc. the overlay is mostly useful for pulling up the settings bc you can set keyboard shortcuts for other stuff. so that’s what we’re gonna do now, open the settings.

bam, settings. there’s tons of stuff you can do in here, notably change the shortcuts (I keep the defaults). what I’m gonna show you how to do real quick is change where you save your captures, because it can be a little weird since screenshots are saved in the same place as the recordings (not sure if you can change that, I haven’t found a way to do so).

so just click on recordings, and click the 3 little dots shown below to set it to a different file path if you want to.

ok, now to actually TAKE the HQ screenshots.

Alt + F2 is the default shortcut for pulling up the “photo mode” overlay, and it’ll look like this, on the side of your screen.

the settings above will take a normal screenshot with your native resolution, but that’s not what we want, so we’re gonna click on capture > screenshot (as shown above) and select super resolution (as shown below):

with super resolution enabled, you’ll be able to scale up the image render resolution to either 2x or 4x (maybe you have other options depending on your specs, idk, just know that the higher you go the longer it’s going to take).

and then bam, just click snap (unless you want to mess with the filters, that’s an option, I find it unnecessary bc I already use gshade but hey, do whatever ur little heart desires)

once you snippity snap that pic, you’re gonna get a lil load thingy:

it might take a few seconds (again, depends on your pc specs) and like i said earlier, the higher the resolution, the longer this part is gonna take. ultimately, it is a slightly slower process than using SRWE but it’s one that has less issues, more official support, and you don’t need an external app for it since it comes with your PC and is just an overlay. also it doesn’t crash your game lol.

recording is easier though you just click record (or the keyboard shortcut, default is Alt + F9), click again to stop recording, and bam you’ve got yourself a lil video of whatever you want.

Hooooo that took a while- I mean, uh, woah, more art! Started this sort of reference sheet thing like a month ago or so, been working on it very sporadically, and brain kept wanting to add more details and shading so it kinda just kept going and going. but hey, twas fun! and I got some more experimenting in, this time with not actually having proper shading and highlight layers and instead just messing around with the brush opacity

So anyway, it's plant boi. Or Moss!T/iso, as I've been calling him. Sort of just to show how I visualize him, and also what he's been up to since his, uh, revival. tho of course the internal there is from while U/nn was still healing him

And also a bit of a teaser for what should be my next fic! Admittedly, I haven't been working on it as much as I'd like to, with college stuff and also working on the art here. for now, enjoy the snack until I can finish the meal ;) (also click for higher quality, I worked hard on this ;w;) (like seriously the Hunter's hood took hecking ages and for what)

IDA do you have any advice or pointers for gif-making? yours are always so high quality with such great colors! i just started trying to make gifs and i feel like I'm constantly struggling with the export settings trying to make it look decent without being a gigantic file 😭

hiii and thank you so much 💗💗💗

I'm not really sure what to say since I've mostly learned by trial and error, so I guess the biggest piece of advice would be practice!!

I'm sure there are loads of gif tutorials out there and I may make my own one day but here are some tips I can give related to quality (I use Photoshop so these are probably specific to that):

The higher quality video you have to begin with, the easier it will be to make the gifs look great. I go for 1080p or higher (if possible)

When you import video frames to layers, be aware of duplicate frames as they will make the gif look choppy, it's a framerate issue - I use a very simple video editing software to cut out the scenes I want to gif, but if you have a more advanced one, you should be able to adjust the framerate so PS won't create duplicate frames. idk I'm not an expert on this exact thing I just delete the duplicates manually

For tumblr posts, the full width is 540px, half is 268px, go for these to avoid tumblr compressing the gifs

I usually set the frame time delay between 0.06-0.09 seconds since always prefer them a bit slower, which allows for seeing more detail. I check the speed by going into File -> Export -> Save for Web (Legacy) and clicking the Preview, because just playing the gif in PS will usually have lag

After wrangling frames, cropping and resizing etc., I convert to video timeline and convert all the frames to one Smart Object before sharpening and coloring. I use Smart Sharpen and Gaussian Blur filters with different settings, making copies of the smart layer and playing around with the opacity settings (I have this process recorded/automated as an action, but often have to adjust afterwards based on the clip). There are many different ways to do this and probably some tutorials too.

As for coloring, I don't use any automated processes, but just play around with adjustment and color fill layers. A gif with my usual sharpening and relatively simple coloring may have layers looking like this:

I think this is where the practice mostly comes in, because you'll discover new things with every gif you make. it's also the most fun part for me :) again, there are a lot of tutorials out there, and some scenes require more adjustments than others (especially dark scenes). really, Selective Color and Curves may be the most important adjustment layers (to me at least lmao)

As for file size, these are my usual export settings:

reducing the number of colors will always reduce the file size, but I'd usually rather trim the length (or split it into two gifs) or the image size (cropping a bit more off the height). Going for 40-80 frames is usually reasonable, and you can do more for very static gifs or smaller image sizes!

Why do my brakes still squeaky even after I have new brake pads and discs?

If there is a squealing noise during braking, it is generally not a problem, and the braking performance is not affected. The noise is mainly caused by friction between the brake pads and the brake discs, which is related to the materials used in the brake pads.

In some brake pads, there may be larger particles of metal wire or other hard materials. When the brake pads wear down to these substances, they can create noise when in contact with the brake discs. Once they are worn past these particles, the noise will disappear, so it is considered normal. It does not affect safety, but the noise can be annoying. If you cannot tolerate such braking noise, you can consider replacing the brake pads with higher-quality ones to solve this problem.

Possible causes of abnormal noise in brake pads include: excessively hard brake pads, brake pads worn down to their solid frames, excessive wear on the brake discs or brake hubs, rust on the brake caliper piston, ineffective handbrake cables, slow return of the brake master cylinder piston, etc.

If it is a new set of brake pads, it is necessary to check if any foreign objects have been trapped between the brake disc and the pads. If there is a muffled noise, it is often related to issues with the brake caliper, such as worn-out guide pins or detached retaining springs. If there is a continuous squealing noise, there may be multiple problems with the caliper, brake disc, or brake pads.

If the noise persists, first check for dragging brakes. Poor caliper retraction can cause prolonged friction between the disc and the pads, resulting in abnormal noise under certain conditions. Also, check if any foreign objects are wedged between the pads and discs. If it is a new set of pads, examine the brake disc for grooves because localized friction can lead to noise. If there are no issues with the disc, consider whether the brake pads are too hard or if there was an incorrect installation of noise reduction shims.

Xbxs Boots Factory jodhpurs: unboxing and initial impressions

Introduction to Xbxs Boots Factory

In recent history, the phrase “Made in China” isn’t typically associated with high quality products or craftsmanship. On the contrary, it more likely has triggered images of overcrowded sweat shops producing cheaply-made products in mass quantities. However, I believe the tides are beginning to shift—or at least within the boot community). Recently I’ve been noticing multiple brands and boot makers gaining recognition on social media (particularly Instagram) for producing beautiful, high quality work out of China. One such brand that has so to speak "paved the way” for China-based boot makers would be Flame Panda, who came onto the scene a few years ago and continues to produce some of the best quality boots in the world. Since then, a few more Chinese boot makers has caught my eye, enough for me to purchase boots to see if they really are as great as they appear to be on Instagram. This leads us to the brand of focus for today: Xbxs Boots Factory, which appears to be producing beautifully-patterned boots with amazingly high quality finishing, yet is still relatively unknown on a global scale.

Xbxs Boots Factory was founded in 2008, operating as a professional handmade boots factory out of Dongguan, China. Initially operating as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) producing outsourced footwear for European and American brands, Xbxs branched off as an independent brand in 2012 to produce higher end boots of their own. Over the past ten years, the team at Xbxs has grown to a team of twenty skilled craftsmen, manufacturing footwear for mainly local China-based customers. Finally in early 2021, Xbxs created its Instagram profile (@xbxs_boots_factory), opening itself up to international orders. The man behind the Instagram is Luo Jun, who is responsible for posting product photos, responding to DM inquiries, and taking overseas orders. He primarily speaks Mandarin, but his English is actually quite proficient and is super easy to communicate with. At the time of this review, the current MTO lead time is about six weeks, though I doubt it will remain that short for long.

What Xbxs has to offer

Browsing through the Xbxs Instagram feed, it appears that a fair number of the boot models offered by Xbxs are replicas of (or are very similar to) other popular models belonging to other brands, such as Viberg and Clinch. However, while the patterns may not be the most original, Xbxs uses these designs and takes the execution and finishing to a-whole-nother level.

All the boots they produce seem to have extremely high quality clicking, stitch cleanliness, finishing, etc. Any aspect of boot production you can think of, Xbxs seems to go above and beyond the QC of the other brands on the market—including some the brands that the boots may have been modeled after.

Above is a pair of Xbxs boots belonging to Peter (@boot_gazer), which is very reminiscent of the George boots by Clinch. Based on the photos, the construction quality, pattern, last design, and clicking all appear superb. If I was told these were actual Clinch George boots, I would probably believe it. It was photos like these (and speaking to @boot_gazer and @tichoblancoshoes) on Instagram that convinced me that this relatively small, unknown brand could deliver the level of quality I’ve come to expect in my boots.

My ordering process and experience

I reached out to Xbxs via Instagram with a few questions about their offerings, sizing, leathers, and last options. Luo Jun was very quick to respond, answering all my questions (to the best of his ability, given the language barrier), and I ended up placing my order pretty soon after. I’ve provided all the details pertaining to my order below.

Unboxing experience

The unboxing experience created by Xbxs is definitely one of the best I’ve experienced, compared to all the other boots I’ve had delivered. They package arrived with an outer plastic wrapping, which is pretty standard.

Beneath the wrapping, I was happy to see that Xbxs double boxes their boots, as to protect the actual boot box from damage during transit. The outer box is even customized with the Xbxs logo, which is pretty neat.

The actual boot box is a textured black with white branding, and appears to be quite high quality. While it’s not the heaviest weighted material I’ve encountered, in combination with the outer box, it was sturdy enough to protect the boots during transit and can now sit pretty on a shelf in my garage.

Each boot came wrapped in plastic, which were then wrapped in individual thick black canvas drawstring boot bags. I have yet to use any of the boot bags I’ve received along with my boots, but it does show that the brand is going the extra mile when their boot bags feel high quality.

Initial thoughts

“Holy crapolli.” Those were literally the first words out of my mouth after pulling these boots out of the boot bags. I swear, the level of construction and finishing on these jodhpur boots has to be some of the best I’ve ever seen, second only to my White Klouds.

Being completely honest, I’ve wanted Clinch boots for quite a while now. However, their jodhpur boots only seem to be offered on their CN or CN-wide lasts, which are definitely too narrow for my bunion-plagued feet. Thus, when I saw that Xbxs was producing a jodhpur extremely reminiscent of the Clinch jodhpur I’ve wanted for so long but could never fit, built on what was described as an E width last, I had to pull the trigger…and they did not disappoint.

While I’m not quite sure of the material quality that went into the construction of these boots, I must admit that I honestly believe the level of finishing on these boots may even surpass that of the original jodhpurs produced by Clinch. The stitch density is quite high and uniform, and I haven’t found a single stitch out of place. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

One of the more obvious features of the Xbxs jodhpurs that differ from the Clinch version are the buckles. Above, you can see that Xbxs utilizes brass roller-buckles that are rounded/cylindrical in form, while the buckles used on Clinch jodhpurs are matte silver and more are slightly more flat in form. I find this difference fairly negligible, as brass still looks very nice with the black leather. Also, the Xbxs buckles are simple and clean in design, and are much better than some of the weird, lumpy buckles used by some other brands coming out of Asia.

Above are photos of Clinch jodhpurs that were listed on the Pancho and Lefty website. These are built on the CN last with matte silver buckles.

All the upper stitching is so clean and uniform.

The welt stitching is equally as perfect. The single row of stitching is quite uniform with high stitch density, and the fact that it’s been painted over black allows it to wrap subtly and cleanly around the anterior 270-degrees of the welt.

An extra detail that I noticed is that the welt stitching visible on the outsole of the boots is extremely clean as well. On most of my other boots, no matter how clean the top portion of the welt stitching may be, the stitching on the outsole always seems to be a little less uniform. Admittedly, the cleanliness of the bottom welt stitching has no effect on the construction quality of a boot, but I’m still extremely impressed by the level of stitch precision coming out of Xbxs boots factory.

So straight. So uniform. Also note how the thread is left white over the Dr. Sole half sole but is painted black along with the exposed leather between the half sole and heel. This detail (along with the five brass tacks along the edge of the midsole) create a very simple and clean sole unit that I can’t help but stare at.

In general, I prefer my shoes and boots to have 270-degree welt construction, as it allows the welt shelf around the heel to keep a more slim and sleek profile. To no surprise, Xbxs used this opportunity to create as tight of a welt shelf as possible. As you can see in the photos below, the welt shelf on this pair of jodhpurs is nearly nonexistent, pulling in so tightly that I'm surprised there was no visible damage to the black Maryam leather upper.

Last but definitely not least, one of the most impressive features of these boots that immediately caught my eye right out of the box was the level of shine on the midsole. I mean, just look at ’em!

So. Shiny. If you look closely, you can see the reflection of my camera and flash in the heels. The midsoles feel super smooth and glossy to the touch, giving the entire boot a very premium look and feel. These are probably the closest I’ve seen to the midsole mirror shine offered by Goto-San of White Kloud. I’d say these are still obviously a bit less perfectly mirror-like, as you can still see some texture and the divisions between the individual stacked leather layers, but that is being extremely, extremely nitpicky.

Here you can see just how perfect the mirror shine was on my White Kloud boots when they were new.

In contrast, here again are the soles of the Clinch jodhpurs off the Pancho and Lefty website. These midsoles have a fairly even matte finish, with a bit of roughness around the edges on the outer left boot. Don’t get me wrong, the level of finishing on these Clinch jodhpurs is still extremely good–better than 99% of boots out on the market, probably. Nevertheless, I feel that the level of heel shine on these Xbxs jodhpurs is a sign of the time and attention to detail taken by Xbxs boots factory in the construction of their boots. So, while I have never owned any Clinch boots personally, I can't help but think that the build quality and craftsmanship of the boots coming out of Xbxs may very likely already be at the level of these more well-established brands they may be replicating...including Clinch. (Blasphemous?)

Leather quality and clicking

I chose to build these jodhpur boots using black horsebutt TPR from Maryam Tannery per the recommendation of Xbxs. This is a vegtan leather with an aniline finish, which is then given a final coating of TPR (or “Thermoplastic Polyurethane Resin”) before leaving the factory. This TPR finish gives the leather a glossy, polished finish reminiscent of shell cordovan. Over time this TPR coating will break in and fade away with wear, but it does give the boot a nice pretty shine right out the box.

When it comes to leather selection, I usually take the recommendations of the boot maker into high consideration. This is because every individual boot maker has unique experiences working with leather, and has developed their own preferences as to what leathers they enjoy working. I figure that a boot maker will produce the best quality work when they are dealing with leathers and materials that they have a lot of experience and actually enjoy working with, so if I want the highest quality boot possible, it only really makes sense to pick a leather that they personally recommend.

In this case, Luo Jun says that they believe horsebutt from Maryam tannery is best for achieving beautiful smooth rolls with tight grain, and prefer adding a final TPR finish to the leather themselves before packaging them for shipment, which gives the boot that high gloss shine. While the horsebutt used on my boots was black directly from the tannery, Xbxs also enjoys building a boot with a natural horsebutt to start, then applying leather dyes to achieve the desired color before adding the final TPR finish. Whichever upper leather you may desire, just ask Luo Jun via DM what is available and what he recommends, and I have no doubt they will do an amazing job.

Sizing and fit

While discussing fit and sizing with Xbxs via Instagram DMs, I asked Luo Jun offered wider sizes for the 008 last. For those that may be unaware, I have large bunions on the lateral sides of my feet, causing most standard width boots/shoes to cause me pretty severe discomfort. Whether it be due to his own personal preference or they actually don’t allow wide sizing altogether, Luo Jun turned down my request for a wider width, saying that it would disrupt the overall balance and aesthetic of the boot. Rather, he recommended I size up from my typical size 45EE (on Benzein’s kapak last) to a size 46 on Xbxs’ 008 last. He explained that the 008 last is by nature an E width, and he believed bumping up a size in length would provide the added width required for my bunions without sacrificing the overall shape of the boot.

For reference, I’ve listed my relative sizing for other boot/shoe brands below:

After the initial unboxing, I admit that I thought the boots looked too long. However, after actually trying them on and walking around a bit, I believe Luo Jun was absolutely correct in his size suggestion. The width does seem to be a bit snug but not uncomfortable by any means, so I expect any extra rubbing on my bunions will probably dissipate as the boots break in. Also, despite sizing up by a full size, I don’t actually feel like the boots are too big in length. Any extra bit of length at the front of the boot provides enough vertical clearance so that my toes don't feel cramped by the lower profile of the last. Overall, I believe Xbxs nailed the fit on these jodhpurs boots, and would recommend that anyone interested in purchasing a pair but are unsure about sizing to reach out to Luo Jun and his team via Instagram for sizing advice. They seem to know what they’re doing.

Although still very new, you can already see where the rolls are going to form. The grain is incredibly tight on all areas of the boot. I’ve always been envious of all those Clinch boots with incredibly tight grain and buttery rolls, so I’m looking forward to hopefully developing some buttery boot rolls of my own.

Styling these jodhpur boots

There are jodhpur boots, and then there are Clinch jodhpur boots. In general, jodhpur boots are a bit polarizing. They are often on the more sleek side, worn by more “modern menswear” enthusiasts under some slim-fit ripped jeans or suit pants. These Xbxs/Clinch-style jodhpurs are slightly different, as they sorta toe the line between rugged and formal, while not quite falling into either category. The more robust leather, welt stitching, and Cuban heel make these a bit more rugged than dress shoes and more dressy jodhpurs, while their slim last and silhouette make them a bit more sleek and streamline than your average “rugged workwear” boots.

It’s for this exact reason that I really wanted a pair of Clinch jodhpurs, and ultimately picked up this pair from Xbxs. I believe they fit my current overall style and aesthetic perfectly. While I do enjoy the well-made, rugged aspect of amekaji workwear where faded denim and beaten up boots are king, I’m not particularly drawn to the whole lumberjack, double ultra heavy denim look. At the same time, I don’t see myself as one of those “modern menswear” guys either, wearing slim fit trousers, constantly worrying about keeping all my clothes/shoes looking brand new, and brushing and polishing my shoes after every wear. That leaves me floating somewhere in between rugged and refined...exactly where I think these Xbxs jodhpurs fall as well. In my opinion, these Xbxs jodhpurs are super versatile. They can be integrated into both rugged and refined outfits, and anywhere in between.

Take this fit for example. Here, I’ve paired these jodhpurs with some straight cut denim with a 10″ leg opening. While the overall fit has more of an amekaji workwear vibe, the slimmer silhouette of the jodhpurs provide a refreshing bit of contrast against the wider pant legs, which is makes the overall outfit more interesting to look at than if I had just worn some chunky old work boots. This is actually how Minoru (the man behind Clinch) styles his jodhpur boots, and I’m here for it.

At a glance, the laceless front facing of these jodhpurs could easily be mistaken for a black pair of engineer boots (such as my black horsebutt Role Club engineers). However, the neck of these jodhpurs are significantly slimmer than the shaft of my engineers, which breaks up the wide chunky bottom fit.

Can we take a second to appreciate that heel shine…

…and the never ending buttery rolls covering the entirety of these boots??! I seriously can’t stop staring at them.

In comparison, here are the jodhpur boots utilized in an outfit with a more tailored, sophisticated vibe. The minimal, laceless front facing of the jodhpur is very clean, and its slimmer neck/shaft fits seamlessly beneath the slimmer leg opening of these pleated wool trousers, much like any other dress boot would. For reference, these Informale easy trousers have a leg opening of about 8″, though they give off the illusion of being much slimmer due to the pressed crease down the front of the leg.

I may have cuffed my trousers a little too high in these photos, but you get the idea. I do admit, all the rolls in the vamp do create a ceiling in how much these jodhpur boots can be dressed up. However, I personally really like how they look paired with both relaxed and tailored outfits, and I fully intend to wear these boots in all sorts of social settings.

Final thoughts

If you’re unable to tell already, I am pretty stoked with these jodhpur boots from Xbxs Boots Factory. I realize that without having had the time to really wear the boots and break them in, my insight on how the boot fits and ages is very shortsighted. However, based on my initial visual inspection, the hand feel, and the couple times I tried-on and styled them, I have very high hopes for these boots. The stitch density and cleanliness are extremely uniform and cleanly executed, and the clicking (ohhhh the clicking) is definitely definitely definitely up there with some of the best in the industry. There’s not much else for me to say, as the photos speak for themselves.

I should probably try to include some cons or negative aspects I’ve encountered regarding these boots or the ordering process, but honestly none come to mind. The price (though costly, still about half the cost of a Clinch jodhpur), production time (4 weeks from payment to delivery), and quality are all extremely difficult to beat.

Well, I guess there is one thing...one pretty significant thing: how much weight do you place on originality and intellectual property? While the pattern and execution of these Xbxs jodhpur boots may be top-notch, there is no getting around the fact that they are extremely reminiscent of the jodhpur boots offered by Clinch, possibly to the point where they could even be considered knock-offs. (If an imitation is at the same level of quality, or maybe even better than the original, can it still be considered a “knock-off”?) Is it ethically wrong to support a brand that may be impinging on the creative intellectual property of another brand? For me personally, this is a very cloudy and difficult question to answer. Would I have liked to own an actual pair of jodhpur boots from Clinch? Yes. But there is no way my wide, bunion-stricken feet would ever fit into either of the Clinch lasts (CN-S or CN-wide). So does that exclude me from ever owning a pair of Clinch jodhpurs, or anything that even resembles it? Or if another brand (such as Xbxs) offers a similarly designed boot that will actually fit my foot, am I allowed to purchase and wear them under the assumption that the original version was not an option? I honestly don’t know if there is a correct answer...so I choose not to think about it and simply take these Xbxs jodhpurs for what they are: a beautifully designed boot made with some of the highest quality construction and materials in the market today.

To clarify, I am by no means pigeonholing Xbxs as merely a carbon-copying, replica-producing boot assembly line with zero creative intellect of their own. If you scroll through their Instagram feed, you can see that they do offer multiple other boot and shoe models that (as far as I know) are unique to the Xbxs brand. (Some of which I think are really nice, and have actually considered purchasing as well.) It just so happens that in addition to these original boot models, they also offer extremely high-end replica boots designed after patterns already made popular by other brands. Is it Xbxs’ fault that their high-end replica models have caught the eye of casual boot enthusiasts and brought Xbxs Boots Factory into the spotlight on a global scale? Not at all. However, one must now wonder what that implies for Xbxs as a brand, if their most popular models are merely replicas and not their original designs. Moving forward, I think Xbxs should focus on improving their brand-exclusive boot patterns, with the goal of creating a collection of beautiful, well-designed signature Xbxs boot models that they could become known for. That would really put them on the map. It would establish Xbxs Boots Factory as a brand able to stand alone on their own intellectual property and products, rather than riding the coat tails of already beloved and established boot patterns from other companies. If they manage to do that, it would definitely solidify them as a force to be reckoned with in the casual boot community on a global scale, placing them in the company of other top tier boot makers like Flame Panda, Role Club, Kreosote, and...Clinch.

(All that being said, I still love these replica jodhpur boots, and am quite thankful that they make this Clinch-esque pattern accessible to wide-footed customers like myself who would otherwise never be able to wear such a beautifully designed boot. lol)

Anyway, enough philosophical boot rambling for the day. But let me know your thoughts! Whether it be about these boots, or the violation of creative intellectual property and ethics of it all, I’m curious as to what you all think. Regardless, I’m quite happy with these jodhpurs from Xbxs and will likely purchase more boots from them in the future.
