Still, the Yearning Stays

Clary always knew her place. Realistically, she knew… but that didn’t stop her from dreaming.
There were moments, glimpses into a future where maybe, just maybe, Rebecca Lewis would see her as more than just her little brother’s best friend. They spent summer breaks sprinting through the park and playing in the water from open fire hydrants. When Simon wasn’t around Clary would wait in Becky’s room, doodling on spare sheets of paper while they talked or listened to music.
Becky talked of graduating and leaving the city, and Clary imagined the same adventures for herself… but she always imagined with Becky. On the other side of the same coin, Clary always knew that on the shortlist of people who could make her stay, Becky was at the top.
It’s amazing, looking back on it all, what the haze of a childhood crush can make you feel… and what it can make you overlook.
Clary wonders how many of those memories were full of returned looks of longing, and how many she made up. She remembers art shows that Becky promised to go to, only to end up talking in the parking lot with the older kids the whole time instead. Or the rare party a way-too-young Clary managed to sneak into where Becky barely acknowledged Clary’s presence among the crowd.
Clary glances through old sketchbooks to see romanticized visions of what Clary thought their reality was. The smile on Rebecca’s face in every image, was it because of Clary? Or was it because of a show they were watching or something silly Simon did?
Clary watches Rebecca pack, nothing but excitement for her journey out of state after high school.
Nothing but excitement to leave her life, Clary included, behind.
Clary spent so long dreading this day, terrified of being left alone, that she hadn’t realized until recently that she always has been alone. The idealized version of Becky she had in her head was never real, not the way she wanted. There’s nothing to be afraid of because she’s always managed to hold her own and she always will.
“You okay, Fray?” Simon asks, catching Clary’s far-off look.
She can face this.
“Always, Si,” Clary promises, surprised to find that she truly believes it.

Mishpukhe [Shadowhunters - Bubbie Helen & The Lewis Family, Simon/Izzy, Clary/Rebecca]
Helen smiled. The whole mishpukhe was here. It was important to her, having everyone there, seeing her daughter and grandkids and their loved ones. She loved being Simon and Rebecca's bubbie and she loved being a bubbie to their lovers too.
She loved that they celebrated every holiday with her, without fail. No matter what the young ones had going on in their lives, they made time for this. They made time to celebrate and they made time for their bubbie.
"Elaine, you light the menorah tonight," Helen said.
Simon and Izzy helped Helen get up from her chair so she could watch the menorah lighting better. Clary and Rebecca quietly held hands. Elaine's voice was beautiful as she said the prayers. Helen teared up a little. Yes, this all made her so happy.
She became even happier when Simon and Izzy told her that Izzy was pregnant. The more family, the better she thought. And something told her, from the sweet smile they exchanged, that Clary and Rebecca thought the same.
"We'll have little ones running around soon during Hanukkah," Helen said to Simon. "It always made me happy when you and your sister were young."
Simon gave her a hug and then Izzy hugged her too. Simon asked his sister to play dreidel, like they always did when they were kids. Clary and Izzy sat down with Helen and watched their partners.
There was laughter and joy. This was a good night and a good family, Helen thought to herself. G-d had given her her own miracles.

My Best Friend’s Sister
Written for Femslash February - Prompt: Complete AU

Clary knew it was stupid. What kind of decent human being had a crush on their best friend’s big sister? It was ridiculous to even think about. And, of course, Clary never thought about it. Never.
She never thought about Becky’s shoulder length brunette hair and how much it contrasted with her own, long and fiery red. She never thought about Becky’s beautiful eyes that were easily comparable to the Mediterranean Sea. She never made that comparison, she just knew it could be made. Easily. Clary never thought about the tiny pajama shorts and tank tops that she would sneak around in when she thought Clary was asleep on the couch. She definitely never thought about how much better they would look on the floor. Of course not.
Simon would tease her constantly about her lingering stares and her lame attempts to have Becky join in on everything they did together. She didn’t think Simon really cared because that was another thing she would never think about. Just how lovely Simon and Becky’s relationship was and how family being the priority was yet another thing they had in common. She would never spend her time thinking about how if she or Simon had a bad day, Becky would put on 90’s action movies and curl up under the blankets with them. She wouldn’t think about Becky pushing her frozen feet underneath Clary’s thighs and the chills it caused. And she couldn’t think about when they were sick and Becky would make her bubbe’s Gogl-Mogl to cure whatever illness they had.
Clary knew that Becky thought of her as a sister. She had often referred to Clary as her “annoying little sister” or the “little sister she always wanted” and when was annoyed “the little sister she never asked for”. Clary prayed to a god she wasn’t sure she believed in for Becky to see her as something more than “Simon’s best friend”.
Which was why she was sitting on Becky’s bed in her soft pink pajama shorts with the waistband rolled just a little and a white tank top that showed just a little bit more of her midriff than usual. It was Friday, which meant that Simon had Dungeons and Dragons and Elaine had her girls night. This also meant that Becky had the house to herself. And, well, Clary. Clary heard the front door shut and Becky called out to see if anyone was in the house.
“I’m up here!” Clary shouted. She laid down on the bed, propping her head up on her hand before shaking her head. That was way too cliched of a pose. She moved so she sat at the edge of the bed, crossing her long legs and resting her hands on her knees. No, that looked too professional, Clary observed. She kept her legs crossed and leaned back on her palms, pushing out her chest and shaking her hair back behind her shoulders. This was it. She heard footsteps on the stairs and held her breath.
“Clarissa!” Clary shivered at the use of her full name. “I didn’t know you were…” Becky trailed off when she saw Clary on the bed. Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped and Clary knew she had made a monumental mistake. She hopped up off the bed and tugged her shirt down, suddenly feeling a chill.
“Hey, Becks!” Clary greeted in her usual chipper manner. She figured she could pass this off as platonic if she tried hard enough. She gestured toward the tv and saw that it was thankfully playing one of their favorite shows, making it easier to come up with an excuse. “I figured we could have a sleepover. I mean, we don’t really hang out often enough and--” Clary turned back toward Becky and gasped in surprise when she felt soft lips on hers. It was a brief touch of lips, too short for her to even kiss back, and then Becky shot back like she had touched fire. Clary felt like fire.
“That was… Well, I, uh, don’t know exactly what that was. You’re… Clary. Clarissa. Simon’s best friend and like my little sister,” Becky rambled as she paced across her floor. Clary stood frozen as she waited for her brain to catch up with what had just happened. “What kind of person kisses their little brother’s best friend?! Oh my god, Simon is going to kill me,” Becky shouted to herself. Clary let out a small huff of laughter and it seemed to catch Backy’s attention. She laughed quietly along and finally stopped pacing. Clary took a step toward Becky and she immediately put her hands up in defense. “What are you doing?” Becky asked nervously. Clary let a small smile grow on her lips and took another step, Becky taking her own step backward.
“Would you stay still for a second?” Clary asked softly as she took yet another step forward. Becky nodded and didn’t move when Clary advanced one step at a time. Clary approached her like a predator hunting prey. Clary had never been the predator before and she couldn’t say she hated it. She reached her hand up to cup Becky’s face in her palm and shivered when Becky leaned into the touch.
“What are you doing?” Becky asked again, her voice softer this time. Clary still heard the nervousness but it was fading with each second. Clary rested her other hand on Becky’s hip and pushed their bodies together, relishing in the feel of closeness she had wanted for so long. She felt Becky’s body shudder in response and made the decision that would change everything.
“Don’t pull away this time,” Clary begged as she leaned forward and placed her lips on Becky’s. Neither of them moved for a few moments, just revelling in the feeling of smooth lips on smooth lips. Becky moved first, taking a small step forward so their chests were brushing and Clary couldn’t help the gasp that opened her mouth. Becky seemed to gain confidence at that, her tongue snaking out to run across Clary’s lip, almost like a question. Clary’s hesitantly pushed past her lips and the minute their tongue’s brushed, they both sighed into the kiss. Clary let out a pathetic whimper when Becky abruptly pulled away.
“Huh?” Clary said, dazed. Becky giggled and brought a hand up to stroke a fallen piece of Clary’s hair behind her ear. Clary blushed deeply at the tenderness in the motion. Becky placed a chaste kiss on her lips and Clary pouted as it once again ended too quickly.
“We can’t mess around with this, Clary,” Becky started. Clary was going to argue about how she wasn’t there to mess around and how she was pretty sure she had been in love with Becky for years but Becky held her face so gently in her hands, that Clary couldn’t speak. “We can both agree that Simon is one of the most important people in our lives, right?” Clary nodded furiously, her eyebrows furrowing. She wasn’t sure what Becky was getting at with this. Becky just laughed softly at her again. “If we’re doing this--” Clary interrupted, pulling Becky closer to her by her hips.
“There’s no if, Rebecca. I want this, you. I’ve wanted it, well, practically since I met you,” Clary admitted as she gazed into Becky’s eyes. They were so beautiful and Clary found it hard to breath, let alone explain what was happening in her head. She shook her head as if to clear it before inhaling deeply. “This isn’t messing around or a one time thing for me. I don’t do that, as I I know you’re aware of. You know me better than anyone except for Simon. And Simon wants us both to be happy, right?” Clary urged. Becky shrugged but nodded and Clary continued. “This isn’t a game to me. We’ll figure it out, okay?” They nodded together this time, Clary resting her forehead gently against Becky’s and smiling widely. “But later. Right now, I really want to keep kissing you. Is that okay?”
“God, yes,” Becky said, her voice huskier than Clary expected it to be. It caused a shiver to shoot down her spine as she connected their lips once more. Clary thought it was stupid to fall for her best friend’s big sister, but with the sparks flying around them, she couldn’t think it was stupid anymore.

Trying Something New
(Advent Prompt: Ice Skating)
(Read on AO3)
“I thought I’d find you here.” Clary looks up at the sudden voice, surprised to see Becky there.
“Did you follow me?” Clary asks, trying to sound more conversational than confrontational. She didn’t tell anyone where she was going when she left Becky and Simon with a flimsy, half-formed excuse.
“No,” Becky says. “But this is where you go when you miss your mom.”
The statement is such a simple, honest observation that it hits Clary like a punch to the gut. She forgets how well Becky knows her sometimes, that by growing up with Simon she practically grew up with Becky as well. Clary doesn’t have to ask how Becky knew that - Clary hadn’t been particularly subtle about getting choked up reminiscing about holidays past with her and Simon.
“Sorry,” Clary says, though she isn’t sure what she’s apologizing for. For running out on their time together? For lying about having somewhere else to be? For not hiding her problems as well as she meant to?
“For what? For missing your mom? Don’t be ridiculous, Clary. That’s nothing to be sorry for,” Becky says. “Do you want company? I can be silent company, since you obviously didn’t want to talk about it.”
Clary considers the offer, then nods. “Sure. Still a size 8?”
A few minutes later they’re both laced up and making lazy circles around the rink. Clary skates backward so she can talk with Becky, sometimes holding her hands to keep balanced, other times drifting away only to come back in closer than before. At one point Becky starts to stumble and Clary’s quick to pull her close, keeping them both upright.
There’s a charged moment between them then, with their faces close enough that Clary can feel the warmth of Becky’s breath on her cheek, can feel the way Becky’s arms tense under her steadying hold. Clary isn’t sure which of them leans in first - or maybe they both lean in at the same time - all she knows is that a second later their lips are pressed together.
Clary’s eyes open wide in surprise as Becky pulls back first.
“Sorry,” Becky says. “I shouldn’t have done that. You’re-”
“Perfectly capable of saying no if I don’t want to kiss someone,” Clary finishes for her. “I’m definitely not saying no.”
Becky bites down on her lower lip, which isn’t making the situation better, Clary wants to point out.
“Are you sure?” Becky asks.
“I’m absolutely positive I want to do that again. Preferably for longer, and maybe against a wall? At the very least somewhere we’re not both about to lose our balance,” Clary says, which drags a surprised laugh out of Becky who allows Clary to lead her off the ice.

Company [Shadowhunters - Clary/Rebecca]
It was a cold night. Snow covered the streets of Brooklyn. Not many people dared to go outside in this weather but Clary had a mission. She needed to get to her girlfriend's house in time for Hanukkah. It was the first Hanukkah Rebecca was spending without her family (they all lived in Florida these days and plane tickets had been too expensive) and Clary really wanted to make sure Rebecca had some company. Of course Clary wanted to spend every hour of every day with her girlfriend but holidays like this one were even more important.
The snow got heavier.
Clary made it just in time.
Rebecca opened the door and scolded her for taking risks but then she smiled at Clary and kissed her. Clary hung her coat on the coat rack and followed Rebecca to the front window of her apartment where her menorah was.
Rebecca was so excited, Clary could tell. She looked concentrated when she lit the menorah. Clary watched in complete silence. Then they watched the candles together and Rebecca wrapped her arm around Clary's waist.
"Thank you for being here," she said. "It's hard with bubbie and mom and Simon."
"I know," Clary said. "and I will always be here."

i'm not spamming, honest. but if u want then maybe carlos x chubby!reader? maybe she's feeling self conscious about her costume choice? she bought it and liked it a lot but now that she knows claire and jill will be at this party carlos invited her to she's feeling unattractive? they're both so gorgeous and she's low key unsure why he started dating her when he was so close with claire. maybe he reassures her he's only interested in her. and also he might think her body is Nice to boot. lol
You giggled and squealed as Carlos picked you up spinning you around in your Halloween costume. "Look at you! You look good enough to eat!"
"Might take you up on that later." Holding his face in your hands you lean in and kiss him.
Putting you down he grins looking at you. "Cutest red riding hood I've ever seen."
"You're not so bad yourself Mr. Big Bad Wolf." Kissing his nose you giggle when you walk away feeling him playfully smacking your butt. "Carlos!"
"What? You have a cute butt babe."
Playfully rolling your eyes you grab your little basket and check if you have everything before heading out. "Hey, babe, who else did you say was going to be at the party?"
Carlos fixes his ears as he looks over at you. "Leon, Claire, Jill, Chris, I heard Clarie's bringing Sherry for a little bit. Let's see...I think Rebecca said she's also going."
You feel chest tighten a bit when you hear that Claire and Jill will be there. "Im gonna go the bathroom before we leave okay?"
"Yeah sure, you feeling-" before he could finish you had already closed the door behind you.
Sighing you look down at your outfit feeling your curves along your waist. Trying your hardest not to cry you take a few deep breaths in and out before walking out of the bathroom.
"Hey! Are you ready to go?....(Y/n)? What's wrong?"
"Ah n-nothings wrong, let's go."
Carlos wasn't convinced so he takes your hand in his and makes you look up at him. "Somethings wrong. I can tell."
You stay silent for a moment before biting your lower lip nervously. "It's just... Why me?"
"Why you? What do you mean?"
"You know what I mean Carlos....why did you choose me? Why didn't you go out with Jill? You two are so close with each other....she has a way better body that would suit you more than mine does....so...why me??"
Carlos' eyes soften as he pulls you into his chest. "Well, you make me laugh, you're super sweet and understanding when I have to go on missions, you know how to keep me grounded, your laughter is super adorable. Don't even get me started on that body of yours. The way you look in and especially out of this costume is just incredible. I chose you because I saw you for who you are."
He instantly picks you up taking you into the direction of the bedroom.
"Wh-what are you doing?! I-I thought we were going to the party...."
"Forget the party. Im gonna show you just how much I love you and only you. Hope youre ready to call off work tomorrow."

Burning Hot
With a request from @kathmcnamara and based on an amazing conversation I had with her, here’s a one shot.

Jonathan’s fingers wrapped around the too-hot paper coffee cup, and he swore under his breath. At this point, he didn’t think he would ever learn that touching the cup right after boiling hot coffee had been poured into it wasn’t a good idea. His love for warmth and comfort was too great to resist the urge.
“Did you burn yourself again?”
Sebastian’s voice whispered into his ear as strong arms wrapped around his waist, pulling him back against his boyfriend. Jonathan huffed.
“I think one day I’ll just be covered in burns,” he chuckled.
“Please don’t,” Sebastian whispered. “I would still love you, but the medical part would be a bitch to deal with.” He pressed a kiss to Jonathan’s temple and let go of him. Way too soon, if you asked Jonathan.
Unfortunately, no-one was asking.
It was fall in New York. The warmth of the last rays of summer sun had conceded to October chills and Jonathan had finally been able to switch out t-shirts for his favored oversized sweaters and hoodies.
It was one of the last times where the gang would be able to gather around a table in front of the JJ mobile, not inside of the cozy café. He guessed that was a little sad.
Fall was always a bittersweet season, the season where everyone moved back into their dorms and apartments for the new semester. Fortunately, they all lived within the city. Unfortunately, they weren’t all in high school anymore.
That last part definitely had its advantages. Jonathan didn’t know Sebastian when he was in high school, they’d met last year when he’d finally gotten to a LGBTQ+ support group.
Jonathan brought the coffee cup to his lips without thinking. It was still burning, he realized as he burned his tongue.
“Fuck,” he grumbled and put down the cup.
“What a terrible example you are to me, big brother,” Clary teased as she came up to the table, sitting onto one of the high stools and letting her legs dangle from it. She was a fair bit shorter than him.
Jonathan huffed, rolling his eyes. “I’m pretty sure mom and dad gave up on me being a good example about three days after you were born.”
Clary shrugged. “Well I like you enough like this, all swears and boyfriends and all.”
Jonathan chuckled. “Sure, sure. Will you still like me enough when you know I got a much higher grade than you in that one life drawing class? And don’t give me shit about me liking to see naked men more than you, we’re both in the same boat on that one, little sister.”
Clary raised her middle finger at him, causing Jonathan to smile into his latte.
“Should I be jealous that you enjoy seeing naked men in school?” Sebastian said quietly again into his ear.
Sebastian was quieter than most of the members of the gang. He mostly spoke directly into Jonathan’s ear, too quiet for the others to hear. When he spoke louder, it was always in that calm and serene tone of his, the one that made every sort of anxiety melt from Jonathan’s bones.
“Never, babe,” Jonathan whispered back. “You’re the only one I really love seeing naked.”
Sebastian shook his head fondly, leaning in to press a kiss to Jonathan’s lips.
“Ew, guys,” Jace’s voice resounded loudly as he left the truck and settled next to them. “Get a room.”
Jonathan huffed at him. “Just because you have the emotional capacity of a brick, doesn’t mean that none of us can show a little romantic flare, Jace,” he shot back. They knew they were both joking, Jace’s slightly complex relationship to his own emotions and Jonathan’s propensity to be a little bit too into PDA were regular topics of discussions within their group.
It was only the four of them for now, Jace, Clary, Jonathan, and Sebastian. Team Evil, as the rest of the group had nicknamed them for their incredible capacity at getting into trouble.
Izzy was still at work developing software for Clary and Jonathan’s father. Simon was at his music class with the kids of the Hebrew Saturday school he’d once attended as a kid and was now helping out at. Alec was at work as well, and Magnus…Magnus was somewhere. They never really knew where and how, but accepted that Alec’s boyfriend was just a little weird.
Weird wasn’t something that was missing in the group anyway.
They were supposed to also be joined by Rebecca, Simon’s sister and a high school friend of Alec’s. She was also Clary and Jonathan’s history of art TA. Jonathan sometimes wondered if it was weird that they knew one of the people that influenced their grades so intimately but… Rebecca would be coming with her girlfriend Maia.
Really, this quiet moment with the four of them before the rest of the group arrived and they went to get dinner together, was the last moment of quiet they would all get for the rest of the night.
Quiet was a relative term. Clary and Jace tended to speak quite loudly.
Jonathan took another sip of his hazelnut latte, and this time it didn’t burn him. It just spread warmly in his chest, warming him from the inside out. He loved that feeling.
“Can I have a taste?” Sebastian asked and Jonathan nodded, handing the cup over to him.
Sebastian hummed a happy song under his breath as he drank a little from Jonathan’s drink and Jonathan couldn’t help the beam of happiness that took over his face.
“Thanks, Jon,” Sebastian hummed again, smiling back at him.
“Of course.”
