people always praise taylor swift like "ough she wrote an album that told a story shes so original and brave and talented" ok well sure she wrote a concept album about women being sad. you know what else is a concept album? janelle monáe's five-suite metropolis saga spanning 3 albums telling the story of her time-travelling android alter ego, cindi mayweather, who is slated to be dissasembled after committing the forbidden act of falling in love with a human and, while on the run, learns that shes destined to be the savior that liberates all androids through social justice and funky tunes. why dont you listen to that?

SAPPHIC ARTISTS TO LISTEN TO
(instead of writing your 69th essay about how Taylor Swift is a closet lesbian)
Starting off with my holy trinity:
Rina Sawayama (she/her, bi/pan): if you follow me you're probably aware of what a huge Rina fan I am. Lots of pop and rock, with a chunk of her earlier songs being R&B. Her debut album SAWAYAMA (my favourite album of all time!!) was her major breakthrough moment as it received critical acclaim and her sophomore album Hold the Girl made her the highest charting Japanese artist in the history of the UK. Known for her musical versatility, she made her acting debut in John Wick 4. I recommend: Cherry, Frankenstein and Bad Friend
Janelle Monáe (she/they, bi/pan): pop, funk, neo-soul and psychedelic. They have an entire series of concept albums about an android named Cindy Mayweather (her ALTER EGO?!) as she commits the crime of falling in love with a human. Lots of social commentary. Her album Dirty Computer comes along with a narrative film and a book taking place in its world. She's starred in movies like Antebellum, Glass Onion and Moonlight. I recommend: Electric Lady, Django Jane and Pynk
Raveena Aurora (she/her, bi): Experimental pop, R&B and soul. Her second album Asha's Awakening is a concept album following the journey of Asha, a Punjabi space princess, as it explores Aurora's South Asian identity and past relationships. Such a beautiful and soft voice to die for. I recommend: Headaches, If Only and Kathy Left 4 Kathmandu
Moving onto some other artists I like:
Boygenius: a band comprising of three sapphic women- Phoebe Bridgers (indie darling™), Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker (the first two are bi while the third is a lesbian). Indie, folk and alternative rock. Very melancholic. I urge you to check out their individual projects too (especially Phoebe's, I love her Punisher album). I recommend: Emily I'm Sorry, Satanist and True Blue
Kelela (she/her, queer): R&G, electronic and alternative R&B. Her debut EP Hallucinogen covers the beginning, middle and end of a relationship in reverse chronological order. Her second album Raven showcases Black futuristic art, which I fuck with. I recommend: Contact, The High and Bluff
Zolita (she/her, lesbian): dark-pop, R&B and electropop. She incorporates witchcraft into her music and mvs. She literally has an EP called Sappho what more could you want? I recommend: Holy, Ashley (the sapphic Speak Now) and Bedspell
Victoria Monét (she/her, bi): pop and R&B. She's written songs for artists like Ariana Grande (7 Rings) and Chloe x Halle (Do It). Go stream her Jaguar EP you will thank me later. I recommend: Touch Me (erotic sapphic song), Cupid and Love U Better
And finally some honourable mentions (can't make this post too long now can I): mxmtoon, Michelle Zauner, Arooj Aftab, Sir Babygirl, Dodie, Chloe Moriondo, Lauren Jauregui, Baby Queen, Sara and Teagan, The Butchies, Sofya Wang and Melissa Etheridge

Janelle. Monae.
That's really all there is to say. Amazing vocalist, amazing performer, and I love that they incorporated all their different music eras into the show. I lost it over all the Cindi Mayweather throwbacks.

The song of the day is
Janelle Monáe - Dance Apocalyptic
youtube
Another day, another song by Janelle Monae. For today's I bring you one of my favorites they have ever released. This absolute bop that sounds like it could have come out in the 50s uses that idea and runs with where it fits into the theme of the album.
This song is supposed to be the new hit song by the protagonist of this multi album story Cindi Mayweather. Cindi Mayweather is an android also known as Jane 57821, that has been on the run for the crime of loving a human and has since become a bit of a revolutionary figure of sorts. The lyrics of this radio hit describe the deteriorating state of the world.
Tumblr media
Not to mention some not so subtle calls to action, should things continue to get even worse.

“Violet Stars Happy Hunting!!!” (2007) will probably always be my favorite Janelle Monáe song because I have personal associations and also it’s so fucking catchy, but—holy shit, I just realized that it came out 16 years ago. I had to get out the calculator app and actually check the math, I resist this evidence of the linear passage of time. But maybe it makes my point for me—this is part of a multi-part concept project about an alien android named Cindi Mayweather, it’s like a whole story. Now set this next to their process for The Age of Pleasure:
"What I would do is if I knew we were having a party on that Friday or Saturday, on Monday and Tuesday, I’d be like, 'All right. We’re going to write three songs.' If the songs can’t work at the party, they’re not going on the album."
So the new album is "simpler" conceptually, compared to an android from outer space in love and on the run, as almost anything would be, and it's inevitably more mature (16 years, how could it not be). I think when you look at Janelle Monáe's work over the passage of time, the music itself turns into a conversation about art, about both artifice and authenticity being valid in different ways, at different times; about both self-discovery, self-knowledge, and then bringing that back to community; about the confidence ("Violet Stars" is nothing if not wildly creatively confident) you need to start the journey as well as finish it. I was about 30 when I first heard Janelle; now I’m 44, and I know some things now that I didn’t then. Art can fill the space where you don’t know, while you don’t know. Maybe art is how you find out in the first place.

as much as i am fucking psyched to see janelle live soon i am a little tiny bit sad that i didn't get to see any of her previous metropolis related concerts just bc i am such a SLUT. for those 4(ish) albums. they're everything to me. especially the earlier albums with the big ol classical/opera elements cuz of course you gotta take the space opera literally! of course.
and what's not to love. a nonlinear storyline about a bisexual android who fell in love with a human. her being a revolutionary! in more than one way! in a literal sense, in the story she is explicitly fighting for equal android rights obviously, the way sci fi and fantasy is SUPPOSED to be imo. like escapism is fun but when youre really using the genre it is solidly rooted in real life historical and/or current politics, right, making the themes hit harder. making your art reach peoples hearts. making it ART! instead of art.
and real early 2007 we get forbidden love themes on top of you know the songs setting the scene and pleading to the president for a change and fighting for equal rights. and TEN YEARS AGO, 2013, before gay marriage was legalized in the US, we get the very explicitly queer songs like Q.U.E.E.N! (am i a freak because i love watching mary....say will your god accept me in my black and white...even if it makes others uncomfortable i will love who i am!...categorize me i defy every label...).
and i love the snips of radio, and the start with march of the wolfmasters setting up the metropolis story. the evolution of the pop style over the years following the pop trends of the time while staying quirky and unique in her own way.
and age of pleasure is, well, a new age. a really hot really horny really fuckin good new age! and cindi mayweathers story was pretty much done being told. and i am completely ok with that. i can and will keep those albums on repeat. but they're beloved to me and i would pay maybe an exorbitant amount of money for a several hour metropolis performance. i don't think it'll happen. she's very popular but that kind of thing needs CHART TOPPING popular, which is always gonna be more mainstream stuff. she'd have to compromise her style to fit that.
anyway. back to listening to every janelle monáe album in order on loop forever. and you should join me

1 and 2
1- Song of the year & 2- album of the year
I didn’t have as many obvious albums of the year!
My stats for this year show that the Beyonce Renaissance continued. The album came out in 2022 but the live tour came and was everything I needed. So many parts of myself came came flooding back, whether it was teary eyed being taken back to dangerously in love or the mantras of building new foundations via Break my Soul
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right before Renny we saw Janelle live for the Age of Pleasure tour. The album on first listen didn’t provide the same kind of catharsis as their previous records, and I wish it was longer. Whereas previous albums were sound cinema perfect for listening in isolation on your bedroom floor, Age of Pleasure wants to be heard in community, by the poolside, at the picnic, at the Lgbtqbebbbq2seWegonnaEATBBQ, etc. and so much of it clicked when I saw them perform the songs live.
Tumblr media
I was lucky in terms of timing and location privilege that I was able to see Janelle 4-5 times during the release of the first two suites of Metropolis. Then a few times between the ArchAndroid and Electric Lady. But then there was a big gap for me being able to see them live between Electric Lady and Dirty Computer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So my memory of them was being a debut artist, crowd surfing in smaller venues, opener for other artists etc. so to finally see them with an album like Age of Pleasure for a huge multicultural cross generational crowd with a record that directly references the music of the African diaspora felt special. I also think aside from the obvious motifs and liberation and inspiration of joy and pleasure, it’s also inspiring to see how this album developed new foundations and structures for Janelle the musician. Dirty computer freed them from the pressure of only being Cindi Mayweather, but Age of Pleasure just provides so much possibility for Janelle the artist.
In terms of newer artists, Amaarae’s Fountain Baby is so dynamic! No skips! Expansive! Explosive! Genre bending! Redefining what an Afrobeats album can be.
These aren’t albums but EPs that got lots of replay for 2023.

Mette - Mettenarrative
My partner introduced me to them and I never looked back. I love when dancers delve into music and you can hear their embodiment.
Tumblr media
Karen Nyame KG - Red
Short but sweet polyrhythmic sensual drums for the dance floor. Wet is just so smooth and DOES something to me.
Tumblr media
Dawn Richard - The Architect
Dawn is a top favorite. And this EP is 17 minutes and three tracks but feels like a full length album journey. The way she continues to play with genre and what her voice can and glide through crunchy textures is an elixir. The prerelease single was Bubblegum which was a fun moment for dancing but in the context of the EP everything is WORLDBUILDING. An ecosystem of sound.
