'The media frenzy surrounding Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s latest three-hour epic, has yielded many gems: endlessly dissectable interviews, plenty of big brooding fits, and a smattering of anti-internet meme fodder. As far as I'm concerned, though, the press tour's most tantalizing gift was the chance to gaze upon star Cillian Murphy's architectural cheekbones. During a recent London photocall, as Murphy posed leisurely in a cardigan and Sunspel tee, his impeccably-defined cheeks glowed with even more of a sunkissed smolder than usual. The red-hot images left me with a single searing question: “ID on the bronzer, bro?”
Thankfully, Gareth Bromell, the celebrity groomer who prepped Murphy’s hair and makeup on the Oppenheimer press tour, was more than happy to let me in on the secret to his client's healthy glow: Tom Ford powder, in a matte shade of Terra, applied with a soft Chanel powder brush. “The powder doesn't have any glitter or shimmer, or anything like that, which I think is very important for male clients,” Bromell explains. “You want them to look sunkissed but you don't want them to look like they're wearing makeup.”
All men could benefit from a touch of bronzer before a big night out, Bromell says, but "especially gentlemen from, let’s just say the UK and Ireland, who are a little bit paler than others. They’re not exposed to the sun as much.” Cork native Murphy, perhaps the most Irish of all Irish actors, certainly qualifies there.
To get the radiant red-carpet look, Bromell advises targeting the exaggerated points of your face where the sun would naturally shine, like the tips of the cheekbones. “Then, I work it into the left and right of the forehead, the points that are a bit more raised on the face shape, and the center of the nose, a bit on the chin, the ears, and a little on the neck—but a very light dusting.”
Prepping your skin before the bronzer, however, is just as critical for looking your dewiest self. “Especially in men's grooming,” Bromell says, “the skin tends to look a little drier and oiler than with women.” When grooming Murphy, he begins with a cooling cleanser and toner from UK-based brand Haeckels, follows up with a pair of hyaluronic acid and vitamin C serums, and then allows those to soak into the skin with an LED mask for about 5-10 minutes. “That brings up the pigmentation in the skin for a healthier glow.”
Another of one of Bromell's tricks for giving Cillian a rosier complexion? A clickable self-tanner from UK brand James Reed that's “very popular on the male grooming circuit.” After applying a 111Skin face and eye mask to seal in moisture, he mixes two clicks of the Click & Glow pen with some moisturizer, then works the tanner all over Cillian's face. “I apply that into the skin and that develops over an hour and it’s very, very natural and adds a really beautiful glow to the skin.”
The clickable pen helps you control how much you use, Bromell says, and mixing it with a moisturizer or sunscreen dilutes the pigment. “When I use it for myself, it just looks like I’ve been in the sun for a day. It lasts a couple days and fades naturally. I always say less is more and you can always build it up if you don’t feel tan enough.”
Just be wary of getting too close to your hairline as it can stain that area, and be sure to use some cleanser to wipe some off if you get a little heavy-handed with it.
You might not have Cillian Murphy's sculpted cheekbones—or if you do, my DMs are open—but a little bronzer and a tan-in-a-pen will still go a long way towards making you look and feel like a red-carpet-ready star whenever you hit the town.'

He’s had his morning jog, his breakfast, his morning shower and as he’s busy doing his obligatory skin care routine, somewhere after the revitalising toner but before the firming cream, something in his reflection catches his eye. Or rather, it’s the absence of something that does, sending his heart clawing its way up his throat as well as constricting it with its vicious pounding within seconds of the fateful discovery.
On his right hand, on his ring finger, there’s no ring.

ESKRAGH
We buried Thomas’s da today. We put him in the same patch of ground that we had pretended we were putting Thomas. Eighteen months. I never thought the old man would last so long.
The day was bright, clear and warm but there wasn’t much of a crowd. A couple of the fellas that he’d started drinking with, after Thomas, and his wife. She came up and shook my hand, afterwards, thanking me for coming.
She looked more relieved than sad.
“These are hard times,” she’d said. “But at least the priest didn’t take long about putting him in the ground.”
I stood for a while, after everyone else had gone, and admired the view.

I remember the funeral, the other one, for Thomas. It rained hard, there was no wind and the water fell in heavy sheets across the graveyard. That place is on top of a hill and normally you can see for miles. On a fine day you can see from Lough Neagh in the east to the Sperrins in the west and all the way to Louth in the South. That day, you couldn’t see as far as the grey stone wall that penned-in the dead.
The ground around the grave sucked at our feet and the wooden boards beneath our soles were swollen and soft, like decaying flesh.
Not that there was any of that in the coffin we were putting in the ground.
The priest droned on for an age about the young man we’d all lost and ignored the shuffling and the grumbling in the crowd as we got wetter and colder and the mud crept higher and higher up our legs and threatened to drag us all down with the empty box.
Thomas’s dad turned to me after his heavy clod of earth had bounced hollowly on the coffin. He grabbed my arm, his fingers hard as stone, and he fixed me with sunken grey eyes.
“No man should live longer than his children,” he said. I’d been Thomas’s friend for twelve years and that was maybe the first time he ever spoke directly to me. He only spoke to me once more.

This is how we lost Thomas.
The sky was the fiercest blue with a single skiff of white cloud scraping the edge of space high above us. We were at Eskragh Lough, six of us. We’d dumped our bikes in the long grass that grew right to the edge of the water, tossed our clothes behind us and dived in.
Eskragh’s not a big lough, but it’s deep and the water was still icy.
We roared at the shock of it and made for the big wooden raft that was tethered near the middle of the lough.
And then we lay, for an hour or two or more.
Sometimes we talked. Bullshit about girls or football or the Brits or music.
I remember Dec’s house had been raided by the army about a week before and he kept telling everyone about waking up with a huge British soldier, his face all blacked out with camouflage paint, looming over the end of the bed and staring down the barrel of the soldier’s rifle.
“All I could see were teeth and eyes,” he roared. “I shat myself.”
Sometimes we swam.
Sometimes we just lay and let our fingers and toes trail in the water.
We watched the army helicopters, big ones lumbering like fat bumblebees and sleeker ones that zipped like angry wasps, as they buzzed across the sky. And we watched the swifts and house martins rip the air, twisting and turning and swooping after insects. Sometimes a fish would break the water and we’d cheer and pretend we’d seen it leap.
Then, at some invisible signal like a flock of birds suddenly rising, we were up and off and swimming back towards the shore and our bikes.
But only five bikes were picked up.
We called and shouted. I swam back out to the raft. We swam deep into the lough.
We looked and looked. And then we went for help. And they looked and looked.
They never found Thomas.
Eskragh isn’t big, but it is deep.

I went to Thomas’s wake. I stood in the line that snaked out the door and down the path of the wee garden while we edged closer and closer to the house. I stopped in the doorway and watched the people wander around with their cups of tea balanced on hardly-used saucers whose absences left holes in the display of the little china cabinet in the hall. Tidy little sandwiches, cut in triangles with the crusts removed, rested beside their dainty cups. These people, far more used to mugs and whole rounds of bread, looked uncomfortable and confused in their best clothes. Up they stepped, each one repeating the same mantra: “sorry for your loss… sorry for your loss… sorry for your loss…”, the same grave shake of the head, a firm handshake and pursed lips as they traipsed past. Thomas’s ma and grandda sat on the sofa and nodded each of them through.
I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t cross the threshold.
The line crept on. I let other’s pass me.
I’d turn around, I’d go home.
But I couldn’t leave.
I couldn’t go forward and I couldn’t go back.
Thomas’s ma looked up and saw me. I was trapped. She rushed across and grabbed my hand, patting it gently.
“You’re alright,” she said, softly.
“I’m sorry,” I felt my throat tighten and my eyes sting. And then I was crying, tears hot on my face and gasping for breath, leaning heavily against Thomas’s ma. “I’m so sorry.”
“It’s alright.” She stroked my hair and whispered. She lead me through the kitchen, busy with women, aunts and neighbours, making sandwiches and tea, and lead me out into the quiet evening on the back step. “It wasn’t your fault.”
We sat on the step, the two of us crying for a long time. She held my hand in her lap. She smelled of earth and lemons and she rested her head on top of mine.
After a while someone coughed in the doorway behind us and Thomas’s ma straightened up and smoothed out her skirt.
“I have to go back,” she said, not letting go of my hand. “I want you to have something of his, before you go.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t – ”
She stopped me.
“Go up to his room, it’s just like he left it, I haven’t been able to go in there yet,” she patted my hand again. “Take something. Anything. Something that you can keep, that will remind you of him.”
“There isn’t anything – “
“Kathleen?” The voice came from inside, it was soft, slightly worried.
“I’m grand, I’m coming,” she said, then turned back to me. “I have to go back. You go on now.”

I dreamt of Eskragh. I dreamt of something pale and cold moving in the depths. It was fast and sleek and it shimmered slightly in the moonlight.
I followed in its wake as we moved through the water, down and down we went in the darkness and never reached the bottom.
And then the thing was gone and I was deep in the freezing lough and my lungs were burning and behind my eyes a terrible pressure was building and building as I began to rise, too slow, too slow, surrounded by a halo of silver bubbles.
I looked down.
The pale thing looked at me. For the first time I saw a face and sad, familiar eyes.
I woke with a gasp
The sweat that soaked my bed was icy cold.

I had been in Thomas’s room plenty of times before. We used to sit here listening to the charts on a Sunday afternoon and taking turns to play Deathchase or Manic Miner on his Spectrum.
He had a collection of page three girls cut out and hid between the pages of an old Warlord annual in his cupboard, we used to look at them too. I riffled out the yellowing newspaper pages and jammed them into the pocket of my jacket. It felt important that his ma didn’t find those.
Then I sat on the bed.
Was there anything I wanted here?
We’d long copied each others records, cassettes and computer games and, anyway, those weren’t the kind of things that his ma had meant.
There were books and comics, Thomas was a reader, but I didn’t have much use for them.
There were Thomas’s medals for football and hurley. The harp his uncle had made him when in the Long Kesh. There was the picture of Thomas Clarke signing the Proclaimation of the Irish Republic before the Easter Rising. Thomas’s ma was a Clarke, and Thomas had been named after her ancestor. And there was the picture of the Sacred Heart his parents had put above the bed.
None of this meant anything to me.
I stood up, rubbing my forehead, kneading my temples.
There was nothing here for me.
Then the door opened.
Thomas’s da was standing there.
I jumped and suddenly felt guilty. I was trespassing.
“Missus Toner said I could come up,” I said. “I wasn’t… I didn’t mean to –”
He just stood there, holding the door open.
I edged forward, ducking out beneath his arm.
As I passed him he stopped me with a hand on my shoulder. He was holding out something. I took it. I tried to say thank you but the old man wouldn’t look at me. He stepped into his son’s room and, without a word, closed the door.
I looked down.
I was holding Thomas’s Saint Christopher’s Medal. He always wore it. The silver medal on a leather band with the neat silver clasp, it was his favourite thing.
I weighed the medal.
Why hadn’t he worn it at Eskragh?
I wandered down the stairs and out of the house, the medal gripped tightly in my hand.

I was walking past Fallon’s, it’s an old man’s pub full of serious drinkers – men whose faces burn red with the tracery of veins spreading from their nose. The sacred heart lamps.
Thomas’s da came stumbling out, hard drunk on a Thursday afternoon. I was walking home from school, still in my uniform, and almost walked into him.
He looked at me. Did he recognise me? I don’t know.
I opened my mouth to say something but found I didn’t have any words.
“Eskragh took my son,” he said. “It won’t give him back.”
He didn’t last another week.

It’s dark. Eskragh is black and slick and smooth and it laps stickily at my feet, spreading a sickly chill up my body.
I take off my shirt and stand naked and shivering before the lough.
I take a breath and then I wade in fast, knowing that I must move quickly before the cold takes away my will. Another breath, almost a gasp as the water grips my chest, and then I dive in.
Down.
Already my lungs are aching.
Down.
I have Thomas’s St Christopher’s Medal gripped in my hand, the leather band wrapped around my wrist.
Down.
Eskragh isn’t a big lake, but it’s deep.

THE ROUTINE
You guys are about to get a double-post right now because a friend of mine just informed me she’s been doling out shameless blog plugs (yes, it sounded OFF writing that combination of words, too) left and right - and here I have one measley post and basically two about-me pages, so far.

However, things brings me to an important point.... It might not be obvious yet but I am a merciless judge of my own output (projects, work, image, writing... there are more things). I picked up some invaluable insight from Ep. 1 of Abstract on Netflix. It’s subject is Christoph Niemann: German-born graphic designer, whose most recognizable work, I believe, has appeared on covers of The New Yorker. He spoke a lot about the anxiety associated with creative work due on a deadline. “How can you ask me to win the lottery with a gun to my head?” he asked. “... When I realized my fears threatened to take a toll on my work, I decided I had to deal with them. Relax! Don’t be so hard on yourself. Except, I actually totally disagree. You have to practice every day to get better. Why should it be different for me?”
His balance was to be a more careless artist, and more ruthless critic.
Obviously, the pressure and stakes are vastly different, but I can relate to the angst. I think about this blog all the time but never feel like doing it. It’s not time management. It’s not lack of interest or drive. It’s fear.
Time to LOOSEN UP!

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE ROUTINE.
It’s 10 steps. I know. Do you have to do 10 steps every time?
No.
Should you?
No.
The “Korean 10-Step” is a way of naming a general approach to skincare which typically involves more than one step for each main phase of the skincare process: cleansing, treating, and protecting.
I will be talking a LOT about ingredients and layering (#LayerResponsibly), so if I can sum up why I subscribe to the Korean skincare approach in one sentence, it’s that this methodology forces you to consider each step and how it will interact with the ones preceding and following.
Generally, I think Western skincare and beauty marketers have been appealing to modern women as multi-taskers who don’t have time for so many steps. So, many products sold by mainstream retailers you have seen contain both ingredients and properties of multiple steps from a Korean skincare regimen. Additionally, many of these skincare companies have patents on some compound or polymer in the formulation, which makes it harder to know what’s actually in it.
The issue with this is when introducing a new product or active ingredient to your regimen. Let’s say you want to add a serum from The Ordinary into your daily or nightly routine. For the most part, The Ordinary’s serums zero-in on one star active ingredient (supported in some sort of delivery vehicle - i.e. powder, gel, oil, water-base, cream, etc). How will this active ingredient interact with what you already use? I get these questions all the time, and the truth is, I don’t know. Even if you tell me the name, version and year your current products were made, I often can’t figure out exactly what is in them.
For this reason, here’s a general rule of thumb - within one instance of your AM or PM routine:
Cleansing steps - Use products devoid of active/contradictive topicals.
Treatment steps - #LayerResponsibly or choose a star ingredient.
Protection steps - Use products devoid of active/contradictive topicals.
We’ll learn more about what’s “active” and what’s not.
Step 1. Oil cleanse. You usually want to apply oil cleanser to your dry face so it lifts off most of what’s sitting on your face. This step doubles as makeup remover. If you have makeup on, gently rub your eyes last. Yes, you should still oil cleanse in the morning. You’re going to want to clean off all of the layers you applied the night before even if you’re not wearing makeup. ;)
Step 2. Water cleanse. This is your standard foam-based or gel cleanser; usually these have some sort of detergent so that the product creates bubbles. It is ideal to use a water-based cleanser that balances the pH of your skin so your skin is not too dry/tight, and so that it is balanced if your next step is an acidic toner/treatment.
Step 3. Exfoliate. [Not every time.] You don’t want or need to exfoliate every day, and you have options: manual vs. chemical exfoliation. Manual/mechanical exfoliation means you are relying on scrubbing or scrubbers (wash cloth, textured pad, grainy/gritty substance) to physically eliminate dead skin cells, where chemical exfoliation means you’re using enzymes to banish the unnecessary by loosening the substance that holds cells together.
Step 4. Tone. Amazingly enough, you will find you swipe a cotton pad with toner across your face - and even after double-cleansing, more is picked up. Now go back to imagining not-double-cleansing. Noooooo, thank you! I like the assurance that my skin is completely clean. Toner is also about getting some moisture into your face immediately after cleansing, especially if your second cleanse does not balance your skin’s pH.
Step 5. Essence. I had never heard of this step until exploring K-skincare. I also scoffed at the idea of an “essence” - it sounded gimmicky, and many essences have a water-like texture that makes it feel like you’re just slapping more water on your face. But adding an essence affords you your first truly moisturizing step. Essences are (should be) light, packed with nutrients and amenable for layering (not too tacky). The right essence makes your skin bouncy, youthful, and bright by plumping your skin and filling in all the little grooves -- all without adding weight.
Step 6. Treatment. SERUMS. Here’s the step where you rotate between serums with a main active ingredient depending on the time of day, time of year, time of month, or main concern at the time. Here are the most popular categories of serums, boiled down to their primary use.
Retinol/Retinoids/Vitamin A - Advanced cell turnover-ers; photo-aging and skin wrinkle combatants.
AHA/BHA Acids - Chemical exfoliants to clear pores and fight blemishes.
Examples: Salicylic acid (BHA), Lactic acid (AHA), Glycolic acid (AHA)
Antioxidants - Inflammation-fighters to brighten/even skintone and help prevent acne.
Examples: Vitamin C, Niacinamide, EUK, Alpha Lipoic Acid
Step 7. Sheet mask. [Not every time.] This is step 7 because the idea is a sheet mask goes on after your active serum to encourage it into the skin. For me, sheet masks replace step 5 because most are soaked in essence. So, when you’re done with a 15-20 minute sheet mask, you just discard the mask, pat the rest of the essence into your skin, and finish up. Apparently Koreans sheet mask every day and keep a full drawer of them on stand by. I don’t buy quite enough of them to sheet mask daily but this is about a twice/week step for me.
Can I just say...? Make sure the damn thing is applied properly. Unfold the cloth fully before applying it to your face, line it up with your facial features as best you can, and smooth that sucker down so it’s flat on your face - nudge the air bubbles out! This is a not a big deal if a sheet mask is a little dangly, but, listen -- you’re already doing it. Might as well do it right.
Step 8. Eye cream. I’m betting the concept of an eye cream is already fairly well-known and accessible to any and all readers. These are special creams for your sensitive eye area. Honestly, I don’t think eye creams are magic and I think there are misconceptions about what an eye cream can actually do. Just go for one that is rich and moisturizing, but also sinks in so you’re not trying to apply makeup to an oil slick. Shiny under-eyes are not exactly en-vogue.
I begrudgingly use and recommend eye creams but there are some EYE SERUMS I can get SUPER HYPED on and will be sure to share the details with you.
Step 9. Moisturizer. Seals in all former steps; protects. You will probably want different versions for summer/winter. This step can be an emulsion, a lotion, a cream, a gel, or even (GASP) an OIL. Don’t be afraid of facial oils.
Using oil on one’s face is another relatively, newly-accepted concept in the Western beauty/skincare marketing world. I think we can all remember for a long time, there, how oil was made out to be the ultimate enemy. Understand that oil is on and produced by your skin at all times, and it is not necessarily comedogenic.
Step 10. SPF. [Not every time.] No need to use this at night, but yes, you need to use SPF every single day if you care about your health and/or visibly aging slowly. There are no exceptions. We’re even more photosensitive when we use strong active topicals and there are plenty of fantastic Korean sunscreens that you will WANT to wear.

A. I like this blog post’s 4 principles for mixing skincare:
*Use skincare with similar pH levels together.
*Reserve skincare that is light-sensitive (i.e. its actives get used up by light or they make your skin sensitive to light) for night-time.
*Separate skincare ingredients that have the potential to de-activate one another.
*Separate skincare ingredients that work in too similar a way (i.e. one product that exfoliates with glycolic acid and another product that exfoliates/moisturizes with salicylic acid).
I see her 4 and raise a 5th: after your cleansing steps - when layering products that don’t get washed off, use them in the order of least to most viscous.

B. Where do you do other masks (i.e. non sheet masks?) Depends, but usually after toning and before essence.
C. If you’re starting a brand new routine or adding an active topical, it’s commonly accepted that there can be a “purging” period where you actually break out a little more while your skin is adjusting (and becoming more clean than ever before).
D. It’s fun to have a set routine or set of routines, but once you get to know which ingredients and products work well together and which shouldn’t be mixed, I would not stick to a set regimen where you HAVE to do routine A versus routine B. Go with what your skin needs. Even with knowledge, discipline and a kick-ass arsenal, what your skin needs does not follow a plan.
