A writer I follow on YT and who is not the sort of person to ignore nuance has made a 2 hour+ video about 'AI' art etc. after he spent several months deep diving into it all. He also has a degree in copyright law, so I'm about to watch and excited to learn what he found out!
Anyway, figured I'd share it here because we all need to learn more about how 'AI' generators actually work and affect real people.

👻 Happy Friday people!! 👻
Oliver is back with another adventure in the Realm of the Dead! This time Oliver meets Chatty! Chatty is a deleted version of Artificial Intelligence from the human world. But rather than being afraid of something new and unknown, Oliver embraces the opportunity to make a new friend and learn from their unique perspective. Just a reminder that we should always approach the world with an open mind and a positive attitude, no matter how different it may seem at first. 😋
And I know there is A LOT of controversy about Artificial Intelligence. But I actually think there are parts of AI that are going to bring us some amazing things in the future! Instead of being nervous, I encourage all of us to challenge ourselves, embrace this new technology, and look for ways it can assist, enrich, and make our lives better! 💪🦾
FUN FACT: I actually worked with ChatGPT to see what it's actual response would be to Oliver in the 4th panel of this comic! So Chatty's response is a real AI answer! Please note, Positively Ghostly is normally 100% written and drawn by me! Since today's comic had a theme of AI, I decided to use ChatGPT as an experiment. I was actually shocked it had a funny retort! 🤣😅
Has there been any new AI tools you've been using or interested in? Please drop a note in the comments!
Thank you for being amazing fans, your support of PG, and for joining me on this journey! More importantly, THANK YOU for being YOU! ❤️
-Greg

Already tired of people saying something was "ai generated" as easy insult for films/books/songs/etc.
I understand the urge to use this joke. It's a fresh way to say something was soulless, bland, terrible, confusing, or a mix of these things. Most people obviously interpret it this way, and I'll probably still say it with friends.
But it's already hard to tell some AI content from human work. I don't like the idea that some people could even slightly believe a 2024 movie, produced before ai generation was at the level we see today, was responsible for human art. For film, it also diminishes the effort of people actually working on set/behind the scenes to make good art, despite the people in charge restricting them. Saying their work is AI dehumanizes it, makes it easier to ruthlessly insult, and ignore the good in it.
If you want to insult a work, it's much more interesting to actually analyze why it failed. Why certain choices were made, or how competing ideas led to a disappointing product. Flattening all the flaws as the output of AI, even as a joke, just feels lazy.
This is NOT me saying to stop calling out real AI. It's why the WGA and SAG went on strike. Of course it's important that fake posters, scripts using copyrighted materials, book covers, and ads using this tech get debunked immediately.
I just think if we continue to say it with every piece of bad media, casual viewers will care even less about AI. They might enjoy the "ai" content, or they recognize it as an easy insult and start to ignore real callouts.

It is possible to employ AI in Search-Engine Optimisation. In my view, good semantic, accessible, validated HTML5 along with the correct meta tags go a very long way to optimising a website, with the goal of improving its ranking when searched for in a search engine such as Google’s. Web designers are very often lazy. Web Designers very often use div tags instead of the numerous semantic tags which proliferated when the HTML5 standard was released, in 2008–2014. “sema” in Greek means “sign”. Thus, “semantic tags” “signify stuff”, whereas div tags do not. Web designers very often do not add an alt description when including images. Very often web designers neglect to include ARIA attributes in their HTML code for the sake of screen-reading devices employed by the visually impaired. Very often web designers fail to validate their HTML. Very often web designers use CSS art instead of inline SVG. In my view, coding good HTML5 is a Search-Engine-Optimisation exercise all in itself.

I would really like a single office day where I don't come home and play an evening-long game of Am I The Asshole?
#i probably am#coworker got mad at me today bc she used chatg/pt to write a list of revisions for me#and what it wrote was both incredibly condescending (chat/gpt feels the need to explain the basic rules of design like you're an infant)#and way longer than it should've been (we ask everyone to keep their posts short and sweet so that we don't have to read a whole paragraph#to figure out what the hell they want us to do)#so anyway i just told her 'pls just write out the tasks we don't need a whole chatg/pt essay for this'#and that made her mad bc she 'wrote everything up so nicely!' (no you didn't bitch)#so anyway we're caught in a loop of both thinking the other is a fucking asshole who's being a dick for no reason#also i sent her 2 screenshots just to explain that I'd thought 2 things were different sizes and she went ballistic#anyway... it's annoying bc i think she's our best designer but also. very much starting to not like her as a person#maybe i complimented her work too much. the other week she wrote out changes BY HAND that were perfectly clear and good#and i told her as much in the meeting#so....i guess this time she decided to use chatgpt? to be massively condescending bc CLEARLY i didn't just type thr wrong number somewhere#nooooooo CLEARLY i just don't understand web design at all!#also she got in a snit about 'of course X is Y pixels tall! we do all those meetings where we discuss the grid size!!'#which like....i am in those meetings and they are just the one dev trying to convince the designers to use the grid#and them coming up with a million reasons not to#sooooooo fuck me i guess for not expecting you to use the grid when all you do is piss yourselves about how were stifling your creativity#ANYWAY. so yeah maybe i am the asshole but in my defence don't use a fkn ai to write something that should take like 5 mins to write
