And sealed spirit Cater who’s determined to utilise this mage to bring him back to life. He speaks in haunting whispers, taunting them with images of grandeur and power.

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall - Fake dating, intense fear of emotional vulnerability, domesticity, great group whatsapp banter: chef's kiss. This was an ace contemporary UK romance.

Hither, Page by Cat Sebastian - A sweet little pre-war detective story set in a sleepy English village, this was a short read that made me crave some Miss Marple TV specials.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune - A lovely found-family romance set in a world where magical creatures are treated like second-class citizens, and magical children are sent to surveillance orphanages. A civil servant who is very loyal to his intricate bureaucracy is sent to review a slightly unorthodox orphanage on an island, run by an eccentric and kind man. He realises there's more to caring for children than ticking all the boxes on a form, and falls in love with the whole island along the way.

The Sugared Game (The Will Darling Adventures #2) by K.J. Charles (review of book 1 here) - A bookseller teams up on a smuggling case with his on-again, off-again hook-up, a government spy who is unwilling to risk his job's secrecy for their relationship. Sparks fly as they investigate mafia nightclubs and high class fashion events. I love this series!

Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen by Lois McMaster Bujold - A quiet, contemplative book about two older partners (male and female) in a throuple, coming back together several years after their male partner died. This is set in the far future on another planet, but the sci-fi element takes a back seat here as they find a path towards a happy retirement together.

My own LGBT YA novel was just released! The Reckless Afterlife of Harriet Stoker is a paranormal horror about ghosts stuck in the afterlife.

What if death is only the beginning? When Harriet Stoker dies after falling from a balcony in a long-abandoned building, she discovers a group of ghosts, each with a special power. Squad 3 Shinigami.

Mainly tasked with the up-keeping of headquarters and most of the grunt work. Cerulean gets antsy when things are messy.

A little awkward with their words, but will open up immediately if food is offered. Cerulean has a special place in their heart for Onigiri.

Cerulean dislikes a certain 2nd Lieutenant in the squad, but there’s a grudging sort of respect present in all their dislike for him. It’s hard to dismiss him as weak, not when they’ve seen that guy topple an entire Gillian alone.

Loves flip phones, and has a whole assortment of keychains dangling from the end. It used to change everyday, but lately their favourite seems to be a red diamond…

Has a tendency to take naps on top of trees, much to their superior’s chagrin. It takes awhile to find Cerulean every time they decide to take a break.

Zanpakuto: 十の太陽 // Jū no taiyō

(The Ten Suns)

A homage to the legend of Hou Yi and the Ten Suns.

In Chinese mythology, there were 10 suns. Initially, the 10 suns would cross the sky one by one, but one day, all 10 suns came out at once, scorching the earth. Hou Yi was tasked by the mythical King Yao to rein in the suns. He shot all of them, expect for one. That is apparently the sun we see today.

Activation phrase: Scorch this World!

Heats up the edge of their Zanpakuto, so that every blow burns the opponent. It take time for the heat to build up, though.

Bankai: Trample this world underfoot, Burn into Ashes.

Ten rings will materialise behind Cerulean, and fire rays of intense heat at the targeted opponents. A glass canon, though. Cerulean is left with virtually no defense during this process.

The crown is heavy.

It has always been.

With great power, comes greater responsibility. A certain indifference to self is needed in order to rule. A king always has to value the lives of his subjects over his own. The people would then protect the king with all they have, a wonderful cycle of gratitude flowing between the two entities.

At least, that’s how it should be.

Why? Why do so much for to save the world?

When this world never bothered to save you?

Bedsheets wrinkled, rustling under their body. A pillow was kicked off unceremoniously, flung onto the cold, tiled floor. Eyes of Ebony flung open, blinking rapidly at the celling. Chest heaving heavily, rising and falling. Trying to catch their breath.

In five minutes, their alarm will ring. In ten, the doorbell will ring, and he would be there. He was always there, without fail. In the fifty times Cerulean regressed, Cater Diamond was always there at their door.

Waiting. In a way, it was touching. For all the timelines Cerulean restarted, it’s nice to know that at least one thing would never change.

Cater was always by their side.

Eyelids flickering shut, Cerulean took in a breath. A deep one, filling every crevice of their lungs. A steel determination throbbed through their chest, beating with every heartbeat.

“I’ll save you this time, Diamond.”

They spoke to the air, letting their words bounce around the room. For fifty regressions, those letters were nothing more but empty air, hopeless wishes that vanished the moment he reached out.

Reached out to them.

This time.

This time for sure.

Cerulean can’t afford to believe otherwise.

The key was under the mat. Tucked into a loose floorboard that Ceru never bothered to fix. Yanking the key out was the least of Cater’s worries. With a simple pull, the chime of metal was music to his ears.

It’s nice to see that some things never change.

No matter how many times he does this, it’s still the same old Ceru that opens the door. The same old Ceru who greets him with a scowl, but has breakfast in hand. A sandwich, for him.

The same Ceru who vanished right in front of his eyes, engulfed by the shadows. He remembers reaching out, begging for them to turn around, to please just take his hand-

For a split second, Cater’s voice seemed to reach them. For a second, they glanced back. Now that he thinks about it, he was probably the last thing they saw.

Before they were struck down.

Cater’s lips curl upwards, a firm line. That was a mistake. A mistake in the future, that tore him apart.

Not now. Never again.

He’ll die as many times as it’ll take, to create a world where Cerulean could smile.

Ceru can’t help but feel their heartbeat race, whenever Cater’s around. Even if his gaze meets theirs for the briefest of moments, it’s enough to send that little heart of theirs into overdrive.

It’ll trash against its cage of bone, thumping against its prison of flesh again and again. Pulsing with a relentless vigour, until Ceru’s very chest aches so. If Cater told them to hand over their heart right there, they would. Eagerly, even.

Plunge a dagger deep into their torso, seizing that fleshy, pulsating organ. Hell, they’ll even present it to him on a silver platter. Anything to free their very being from this mindless ache.

Perhaps that’s that’s why they lash out, whenever Cater says anything. A desperate last ditch effort by a creature driven to madness. An futile attempt to regard some sort of control over their poor, beating heart.

Unfortunately for them,Cater seems amused by their rapid fire denials. The way their words come out in stutters, tongue tripping over every word.

It’s amusing to him. It gives him coming back, poking fun at that silly little mage. It keeps him by their side, beaming away.

As much as it hurts, Ceru just can’t find it in their heart to push him away.

Fingers, an exotic scarlet. They sting, throbbing against nylon strings. The skin hardens, a desperate attempt to protect the tender flesh within. It isn’t fast enough, though.

Red crescents line Cerulean’s skin, digging into the tender plush of their hands. Sliding up and down, jabbing downwards, pinning strings to the fretboard.

Fingers pinching around a small coin, Cerulean strums. Moving up, up, up then down. A cycle, repeating for all time. Up, up, up, then down. Along with their heartbeat, thumping against their chest.

Thump, thump, thump, a beat.

A pair of lips open, in the shape of a circle. They try to speak, mouthing out words. Yet they all come out as clouds of air, soundless. It takes a few tries, before a sound emerged.

A voice, trembling around the edges. Uncertain, treading places they’ve never treaded before. Vocal chords shaking, trying to calibrate themselves to the perfect pitch.

“This is a love song, for a… guy.”

A jerky strum.

“Who’ll never know it’s about him.”

A nervous chuckle.

“I know it’s pretty stupid, but I’m much too shy to tell him.”

A light thud. The clatter of a plate being set down. Startled, Cerulean releases the coin. It slides into the hole, clanging against the wooden interior of their ukulele. Reminiscent of a coin slot into a gachapon machine. Rattling within, signifying a chance. If only they were brave enough to take it.

Emerald eyes glance up at them, framed by ginger locks curling around his cheeks. Cater Diamond. A… upperclassman.

There were more words Cerulean would have used to introduce him, but as an upperclassman would be the nicest. Fingers trailing down the edge of the table, he nudges the plate towards them.

A slice of cake, freshly whipped Snow White cream spilling down its spongy exterior. Strawberries were tantalisingly arranged onto the top, the ruby red of the fruits gleaming at them. Strawberry cheesecake.

“Thanks, Diamond.”

A curt reply, coming out a little more sharply then they intended. Cerulean bit their lips, a sharp pang racing through the lower one.

“Thank you…Cater.”

Plopping down beside them, Cater only waves their hand in the air listlessly.

“No problem, no problem! It’s your special day, after all.”

A finger reached for Cerulean’s face, tapping on their nose ever so lightly. A gentle, playful poke, that has their nose scrunching up at his touch.

All they could do was gape.

“You remembered?”

Cater’s hand reaches for his heart, clutching it rather melodramatically. He leans back, groaning in exaggerated pain. As dramatic as he was, no amount of acting could hide the grin spreading across his cheeks.

“Of course! After all, it’s your day.”

He grins at them, a softer smile gracing his lips this time.

“I’ll always remember.”

Scooting a little closer, Cater nudges them playfully. Elbow jabbing into their arm, the ghost of a smirk playing on his lips. In response, Cerulean only sighs, swinging their ukulele towards him.

A knight’s joust, between human limbs and a wooden instrument. It ended in a draw, with both fighters laughing pearls of laughter. It echoed throughout the room, amplifying the pure joy that spilled from their lips.

Clutching at his sides, Cater’s body leans a little closer to theirs. Head settling into the crook of their neck, nuzzling like an overgrown pet. Cerulean only chuckles, before they swing an arm around his shoulders.

A moment of silence, settling around both of them. A wonderful quiet, a gentle quilted blanket wrapping both of them tightly. The comfort of having someone you love, beside you.

It’s nice, Cerulean admits silently. It’s nice to have Cater by their side. Living and breathing, heartbeat thumping through their skin. Cater’s nice to be around in general, but his presence never failed to calm their nerves.

Not that they’ll ever tell him that.

Cater moves a little closer, his two arms snaking around their waist. Holding Cerulean closer and closer, until their waist slotted against his. Fitting together perfectly, two pieces of a puzzle.

Heaving a sigh, Cerulean finally allowed themselves to melt into his embrace. Moving towards his touch, letting their body fall. Fall towards him.

It’s nothing new to them.

Cerulean has been falling for Cater for quite some time. They have yet to reach the bottom, even after all this time. ‘Course, they’ll never tell him.

They’re much too shy to.

“Y’know, Cinder and Wei Jie wanted me come back to Ramshackle dorm for a surprise…

but I guess we could stay here like this.. for awhile.”

“Guh- You came all this way just for me? You really shouldn’t have!”

“But thank you, all the same.”
