Some random thoughts about my two main WIPs and where I am as a writer
One is The Pilgrim’s War (the dieselpunk space opera) and the other is titled Hoard of the Viking Queen (contemporary adventure thriller ala Clive Cussler)
They’re both roughly in the same stage of development- I have a rough story concept, a protagonist or two, and some vague sense of things that might happen.
But what I’m finding is looking at the stories, what’s mainly messing with me now is about finding a new writing process. I can do short stuff no problem, as long as it’s for a small and limited period of time. But I want to do larger and bigger stories as well as consistently write short stories.
So now I’m looking at a conundrum. Do I write a story to write a story? Or do I write a novel specifically as an experiment in developing a process and honing project management skills?
Anyway, I dunno. Worldbuilding for Iron Horizons is more fun, but endless worldbuilding is absolutely a trap I fall into very easily. Maybe I focus on short stories for the project management and writing process experiments.

The Aftermath - A Week after the LIV Golf Debut
The Aftermath – A Week after the LIV Golf Debut
It’s been a week since golf fans around the world saw the beginnings of something new. After months of speculation surrounding everything from where the up-start could be watched to who was going to be playing in the maiden event of what most golf fans hoped to be nothing more than a sojourn professional golf tour. Something that would slowly whittle away, outlive its shelf life and see life…

Billy discovered the Roman centurion lying on the floor of a public bathroom just outside New Jersey. Then he was almost stabbed.
It was Halloween so Billy assumed he was just drunk and really committed to the bit. He made quite a dashing Roman solider, with strong arms and calves Billy could definitely see himself getting behind (or kneeling for in a similar situation). After the fourth attempt to talk ending in loud angry Latin, Billy thought there was something else going on. Something bigger.
Walking into the nearest hospital after the centurion promptly collapsed, Billy found that the guy had absolutely no medical records, no birth certificate, no drivers licence and no passport. He continued to yell at anyone and everyone in the ER reception and promptly fell into the revolving doors.
Well, it seemed like Billy had accidentally gained a pet Roman for the foreseeable future. Great. At least he wasn’t as tentacle-y as the mind flayer had been.
Steve, as Billy had nicknamed him, was a piece of work. He made no attempt to communicate with Billy until the second week of them living together. Then he just pointed insistently at the grapes in the fruit bowl, like he expected Billy to feed them to him. Billy just chose to roll his eyes and let Steve throw a tantrum in the kitchen.
By the third week, Billy was starting to feel like the worlds worst Catholic for understanding absolutely not one word of Latin. Argyle had retained some knowledge and Billy found out that most of what Steve talked about was either his horse, his toga or his sword, which Billy had locked up in a cabinet.
He was also quite possibly the most flirtatious man Billy had ever met, and Billy had spent his late teens roaming the clubs of WeHo. Constantly squeezing Billy’s biceps or trying to climb into his lap. Billy couldn’t exactly say he was mad at it. He’d been having a pretty impressive dry spell apart from fast and disappointing hookups. Still, there was a part of him that felt guilty.
Steve could have a wife back in 2 AD or whenever he came from. Boyfriend. Whatever. It was a pretty weird fear to be having considering how consistently Steve had been coming into him but it stayed. Lingering in his brain. Like concrete.
Billy’s best and most exaggerated sign language didn’t help shit. Steve just briefly looked confused and then went straight back to flirting with him. Hard. That was a pretty good sign of what Steve wanted.
Then Billy made a mistake.
Steve had actually said Billy’s name for the first time. He’d been trying to learn English, if somewhat rudimentary and Billy liked to think, for him. There’d just been such a surge of emotion rushing through his head that he ran up, clasped Steve’s face and then they were kissing.
Then they slept together.
Shit.
It was really good but Billy had no idea where to go from here. Steve obviously thought they were a thing but how to clarify what thing exactly Steve thought they were when Steve hadn’t mastered much past, yes, no and pretty much every swear word?
But then he found himself looking over at Steve’s sleeping face, body wedged between Billy’s arms, and found that he couldn’t really make himself care that much.
Steve liked him. He liked Steve. Why worry?
They’d be fine
@hephaestn @bigdumbbambieyes I promised I’d tag you in my first ficlet after deactivating intothedysphoria, I hope you like it!

This is the Science Fiction Book Club first edition of Robert Holdstock’s Mythago Wood (1984). It concern a family living near the titular forest. Dad’s obsessed with it, Mom is going to pieces because of that obsession, kids are largely neglected. One brother goes to war, the other stays. Mom and Dad die. The war brother comes back years later and find things…strange.
The forest is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. It is also inhabited by unusual people, like Roman centurions, Robin Hood-like huntsmen, barbarians and a giant rage god that is a man with a boar head. These inhabitants are both manifestations of the land’s memory and also somehow connected to the minds of the regular people who enter the woods — everyone brings their own set of mythagos to life. The edges of this are fuzzy and never fully explained. Its the best part of the book and it speaks somehow of a primal human consciousness in such a way that I’ve never really been able to stop thinking about it (even though I have very little desire to read the subsequent novels in the series).
The bulk of the novel consists of a rivalry between the two brothers. The one who stayed has spent years roaming the strange landscape inside the wood (which houses many ruins and a couple of distinct culture groups) as a barbaric reaver who seeks the affections of a young Boudica-like woman/archetype that the war brother also loves (some of the relationship stuff here is yicky, fair warning). Christian’s (ironic name) transformation into a violent, filthy bandit king is striking and also resonates strangely. Things come to a head near the even-weirder heart of the wood and end rather enigmatically (and subverts expectations for a violent score-settling).
Curiously, despite there being like eight books in the series, I don’t ever hear folks talk about them. That, somehow, makes the secrets of this book even more appealing.

I would like to request becoming Greek I’ve read a lot about Greek mythology lately
Greek Mythology. A wonderful thing. Beautiful gods. I can understand that you would like to belong to Olympus. What do you think of Apollo? I would say that it suits you very well:
Tumblr media
But between all the marble statues, it's a bit boring. But you are a god! We can change that. So let's swap Olympus for the Jackie O' in Mykonos. Fellows like you should have fun here. Real fun! Drink things more delicious than nectar and ambrosia. Dance with the gods on the dance floor and do things with them that you would never have dared to do with Adonis, Hermes or Heracles… But to make it easier for you, give me a bag of your Thracian gold coins. And I'll give you this black card in exchange. Don't worry, you'll quickly learn how to use the Centurion…
Tumblr media
Fuck, dude! How long have you been here? This doesn't really look like the Apollo I brought from Olympus to the club anymore. But it looks like you've had plenty of fun lately. Get in touch if you need anything!

This is not a drill, this woman hates me but accepted the hiring process and I don’t know what to do now.
Alright let's bring out the FAQ
Is Kal'tsit a good replacement for most medics?
No, both her Medic class and her Standard Medic subclass are filthy lies. She has an extra row of tiles additional range over standard medics, a lower ATK stat, higher HP and DEF, and prioritizes healing herself and Mon3tr over other units, making her a poor choice for a healer. Mon3tr himself is a Protector, Centurion, or Dreadnought depending on if Kal'tsit is running S1, S2, or S3, with a 25 second redeploy time and some truly monstrous stats.
Tumblr media
Look at this shit. Her spine dwarfs most operators.
How do you use Kal'tsit then?
First, you leave 2 slots open in your deploy limit because Kal'tsit and Mon3tr take one each, equip S2 if you need a Centurion or S3 if you need a Dreadnought that also has 3 block, and then you kill with Mon3tr. Kill everything. S2 has very high DPH while increasing both Mon3tr and Kal'tsit's ASPD, meaning Kal'tsit heals Mon3tr very rapidly while Mon3tr chews up most enemies even through their high DEF.
On the other hand, her S3 gives Mon3tr True damage at the cost of a slowly decreasing ATK. This skill is for when you no longer want to think and simply want to kill. With True damage, you don't have to worry about evasion, most damage reduction, defensive stats, nothing, Mon3tr will hit exactly as hard as its ATK stat advertises, which is very, very high.
When do I use Kal'tsit?
When the game gets hard because some stupid boss deals 3000 damage and has defensive gimmicks out the wazoo, you bring in Kal'tsit and suddenly the game is not hard, because you can simply say no to most game mechanics and club their brains in. Very few bosses can deal with Mon3tr, most of them do so by flying so they don't have to fight Mon3tr.
When do I not use Kal'tsit?
Kal'tsit is a bad pick in SSS, where Mon3tr cannot be given Tactical Equipment, in poison maps as Kal'tsit is programmed to heal herself or Mon3tr first before any other operators, in stages with a very low deployment limit as Kal'tsit and Mon3tr take up 2 (and even then, if they can solo the stage then even that doesn't matter), or in stages that only have all ranged or all melee tiles (since Kal'tsit must be deployed to deploy Mon3tr, and Mon3tr can only be deployed in melee tiles). Otherwise, she can brute force most content with her versatility, DPS, and ridiculously cheap SP costs.
What skill do I M3?
Both S2 and S3. They're both ridiculously strong, but if you have to pick one to start with, go with S3 as True damage is very rare, and Mon3tr's is among the easiest to use.
What about S1?
The skill numbers are actually pretty good, but you don't need Mon3tr to tank. You need Mon3tr to kill.
Can other medics heal Mon3tr?
Only Kal'tsit can directly heal Mon3tr, otherwise Mon3tr has the no healing tag. Regeneration that works on Musha or summons still work on Mon3tr though.
Which module do I get?
Both are really good, and they do different things as well. X to increase Mon3tr's survivability and use him as a fast redeploy true damage bomb, Y when using Mon3tr as a stable laneholder to amplify his already great damage output. Yes I know it's not fair for Kal'tsit to get two big upgrades when she's already Kal'tsit, but she sure did get some great modules.

The 10 Most Anticipated TTRPGs For 2024!
EN World's annual vote on the most anticipated titles of the coming year, and yes, some games have appeared on this list in previous years.
Tumblr media
10 Tales of the Valiant (Kobold Press)
1st appearance Kobold Press joins the 'alternate 5E' club with this rewritten, non-OGL version of the game! A million dollar Kickstarter last year, and a new one for the GM's book going on right now, Kobold Press announced this as 'Project Black Flag' during the OGL crisis of 2023, but being unable to trademark that name opted for Tales of the Valiant instead. The system, however, is still called the Black Flag Roleplaying System.
Tumblr media
9. Mothership 1E (Tuesday Night Games)
3rd appearance On this list three years running, the boxed Mothership 1E game should be coming out this year! This is sci-fi horror at its best -- you can play scientists, teamsters, androids, and marines using the d100 'Panic Engine'. Yep, it's Alien(s), pretty much.
Tumblr media
8. Monty Python's Cocurricular Mediaeval Reenactment Program (Exalted Funeral)
2nd Appearance Exalted Funeral made quite a splash when they announced this game last year, which went on to make neary $2M on Kickstarter. And how could they not? It's Monty Python fergoodnessake! A rules-lite gaming system, spam, a minigame with catapults, spam, coconut dice rollers, spam, and an irrepressible Python-eque sense of humour. Did I mention the spam? It was at #10 on this list last year, but it's claimed to #8 this year.
Tumblr media
7. Daggerheart (Darrington Press)
1st appearance From the Critical Role folks, Daggerheart is a new fantasy TTRPG with its own original system coming out this year with "A fresh take on fantasy RPGs, designed for long-term campaign play and rich character progression."
Tumblr media
6. Cohors Cthulhu (Modiphius)
1st appearance It's Ancient Rome. It's Cthulhu. It uses Modiphius' in-house 2d20 System. You can be a gladiator, a centurion, or a Germanic hero. Did I mention Cthulhu?
Tumblr media
5. Dolmenwood (Necrotic Gnome)
1st appearance The British Isles, a ton of folklore, and a giant Kickstarter--Dolmenwood is a dark, whimsical fantasy TTRPG drawing from fairy tales and lets you "journey through tangled woods and mossy bowers, forage for magical mushrooms and herbs, discover rune-carved standing stones and hidden fairy roads, venture into fungal grottoes and forsaken ruins, battle oozing monstrosities, haggle with goblin merchants, and drink tea with fairies."
Tumblr media
4. Pendragon 6E (Chaosium)
4th appearance Last year's winner was on this list waaaaay back in 425 AD, and it's still here! Well, maybe not that far back, but it's shown up in 2021 at #4, 2022 at #3, 2023 at #1, and now 2024 at #4! What can we say? People are clearly anticipating it... still.
Tumblr media
3. 13th Age 2nd Edition (Pelgrane Press)
2nd appearance 13th Age is over a decade old now, and was our most anticipated game way back in 2013. Now the new edition is coming! It's compatible with the original, but revised and with a ton more... stuff! 13th Age 2E was #3 in last year's list!
Tumblr media
2. The Electric State Roleplaying Game (Free League)
1st appearance Free League is always on these lists, and for good reason. This gorgeous looking game is described as "A road trip on the verge of reality in visual artist and author Simon Stålenhag's vision of an apocalyptic alternate 1990s".
Tumblr media
1. Shadow of the Weird Wizard (Schwalb Entertainment)
3rd appearance First announced by Rob Schwalb a couple of years ago, this is a more family-friendly version of his acclaimed RPG, Shadow of the Demon Lord. SHADOW OF THE WEIRD WIZARD is a fantasy roleplaying game in which you and your friends assume the roles of characters who explore the borderlands and make them safe for the refugees escaping the doom that has befallen the old country. Unsafe are these lands: the Weird Wizard released monsters to roam the countryside, cruel faeries haunt the shadows, undead drag themselves free from their tombs, and old, ancient evils stir once more. If the displaced people would rebuild their lives, they need heroes to protect them. Finally at the top of the list after being #7 in 2022, and #6 in 2023!

You know, there was a comment in an author's note of one of @aletterinthenameofsanity 's fucs that pointed out something that I can't stop thinking about: Rory's outfits. Taking aside the last centurion outfit for sight gags and his clubs from episode one, Rory in seasons 5 and 6 has one of the most consistent character style designs of any companion on the show (outside of Jack, but Jack kind of feels more Doctor-adjacent to me in terms of costuming in that he wears almost the exact same thing for Torchwood/later appearances, and he only has like three different outfits in late Season 1).
Rory is constantly identified with puffer vests, jeans, and flannel button-ups, with him occasionally having a striped polo (Impossible Astronaut) or a cardigan/jacket (Let's Kill Hitler). When he is wearing an outfit he picked out and not a uniform (so not Eleventh Hour, Pandorica Opens/Big Bang), he is wearing very similar variations on the same general outfit/style.
So why on God's green earth did the costume designers decide to change things so much in Season 7? I understand that there's some argument to be made that Rory "grew up" based on the 10 years comment, but hell, he lived 2000 years and that didn't change his sense of style at all from season 5 to 6 save for the introduction of the Last Centurion outfit into the mix for a gag/"badass" moment a couple of times a season (though never in Season 7). Why does he suddenly go from flannel button-ups and leather jackets to looser plain shirts and hoodies in Season 7?
(There's also something to be said for the change in makeup for Amy- much more emphasized eyeliner, for example- between Seasons 6 & 7 and the addition of a "sleeker" leather jacket. It's almost like season 7 styling of the Ponds is going for a more sleek, stylish, "cool" version of the Ponds, but I'd love guesses as to why outside of making them look more mature- unless you think that might be the sole reason.
Also, yes, I'm aware that Arthur Darvill apparently got to style his own hair in Season 7 so that at least solves the question of Rory's changed hairdo.)

"The God-Kings' Tomb"
This was a fun one. I saw the call for submissions around six weeks before the story's deadline. I'd never written sword & planet before and hadn't read any since I tried to read through Edgar Rice Burrough's John Carter of Mars series. But, I thought- why not?
So, yes, it is tied into the same universe as the story from the other anthology (Hell Hath No Fury: New Pulp Heroines), although it takes place roughly eight years later and in a very different place- Tadankor, also known as Planet X. This time, featuring Dr. Ben Cairns, an SOE/OSS advisor on the occult during world war 2, who finds herself transported to an entirely new planet and interpreted as being the one prophecied to resurrect the God-Kings and save the dying civilization around the gas giant.
So the story took me about a month to write- from brainstorming to drafting to editing to submitting. That makes it the first story I wrote and then submitted rather than writing a proposal first and writing the story after. That was an excellent feeling, and I appreciated the homage to the original pulp writers. And it's quite a hefty anthology, with a lot of excellent stories and writers, each with a very unique twist and perspective on the genre.

The "Butterfly Effect" That is the LIV Golf Invitational
The “Butterfly Effect” That is the LIV Golf Invitational
LIV Golf. Yes, the golf tour backed by the unlimited coffers and stacks of Saudi money. LIV Golf Investments, the firm of which Greg Norman is the CEO and Tour Commissioner. Has it been a thorn in the proverbial side of the PGA TOUR or what? LIV Golf has really shaken up the golf world. LIV Golf has been the talk of the golf community – at large – and there are no signs of that trend, slowing…

the power went out so i’m gonna talk about every harvey relationship onscreen implied or textual
harvey and scottie. where im at in s3 i genuinely like them. like i’m genuinely intrigued at where this’ll go. they’ll obviously crash and burn but i do like her for him she’s comfortable and safe and he trusts her so i’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt end enjoy scottieharvey
harvey and cameron. toxic workplace lolita situation. cameron was the first man harvey ever loved. cameron exploited him. i think like, cameron convinced him the mentor/protege relationship was expected to be a sexual relationship like greek pederasty and harvey knew it was wrong and he believed him. and he loved him
harveydonna they’re insaneeeeeee i love them so so much they’re in love but they’re also besties and he’s her Gay Best Friend they’re so crazy about each other i don’t really wanna see them together so much as i want to see them like clubbing. she lets him bejeweled
harveymike: i mean obviously . that’s where we’re at they are in love and they can’t talk about it and they can never touch each other so it all comes down to longing glances across the hall. i really like how for the two of them, harvey’s office acts as a sort of sanctuary i just watched that episode last night where it seems like mikes gonna have to leave rachel and he says “what are we doing here harvey we argue about everything all the time…?” and all harvey can do was touch his shoulder and apologize … yeah .
harveyjessica oh god EVERY SCENE of them is sexy. and like i don’t want to ever diminish her as a Black woman in power and just be like she’s sexy but damn. gina torres and gabriel macht had SO much chemistry and they brought their fucking a game every scene of them together is cheeky and cute and flirty damn they’re fantastic together. i don’t think they’d ever hook up in the show cus like he’s her employee but . i just think if she was a maurading roman centurion he’d be her concubine

The Jester and The Courier: a wild wasteland love
Tumblr media
Chapter 9: The Rambler, The Gambler .
(inside the Lucky 38 Casino)
Cicero awoke to a strange, but DAZZLING sight, the room he was in…it was like a royal palace!
It was painted in rich reds and blacks with a lush emerald green carpet, lights hung from the ceiling on strands and blinked with multitudes of colors, all around decaled on the walls in bold stripes were card suits: red hearts, black spades, white diamonds and golden clubs.
Emblazoned on the wall was the sign: “LUCKY 38: Presidential Suite room 777” and…much to Cicero’s fluster…there were large pictures of scantily clad women…and men too.
There was even a glowing sign above what looked like a shelf full of potions that flashed reading: “24/7 FULL LIQUOR MINIBAR”.
Cicero rubbed his eyes and shook his head, he could swear he could hear music, MUSIC coming from a strange metal box beside the bed he was in. He looked out the MASSIVE windows and saw the entirety of where he was, he must be in the great mage’s tower in new vegas.
“Well good morning there sugar!” greeted a warbly voice, Cicero panicked and whirled around to see a strange metal thing…it reminded him of those dwemer spheres in a way…mixed with a centurion…
In any case he panicked and grabbed the first thing he could from his bedside and hucked it at the metal creature…a weird tray with ash in it.
“Well Hey! Now STOP! Quit!...MA’AM SPADE WE HAVE A SITUATION!” cried the metal creature, “OH SHIT, JANE!?” cried Myrtle.
Myrtle had been doing something she had previously rarely got to do, SHOWER, afterall it was one of the terms she had to abide too with her brain if she wanted to reunite with it. So imagine if you were in her shoes right now…
You just got back from a tough fight, you rescued a lot of people, now you have a new quirky unpredictable roommate and you are covered in dirt, blood and sweat…you’d wanna take a shower too right?
Just a quick dip, wash away all the muck and anxiety while the lunatic is knocked out?
Well that's what she WAS doing…until Jane started screaming.
Myrtle didn’t even bother getting on a towel or a housecoat, she just ran out of the bathroom in full hot wet steamy glory.
“OI!” she snapped “quit harassing my maid!”, Cicero’s jaw hung from his face at the sight of her standing there…in nothing but bubbles of soap, “MA’AM!” Jane shrieked “YOU ARE INDECENT!”, Myrtle sighed and turned to Cicero who was still perplexed and in stunned flustered silence “well…I think my little impromptu peep-show has calmed our guest down”.
“Cicero this is Jane” Myrtle introduced the strange metal creature “she is a securitron MARK II, she’s my housekeeper, maid, bodyguard and she is going to be helping me take care of you…ok? So please…be nice”, “I know you said the poor dear was sick but I didn’t think he would up and ATTACK ME!” Jane huffed, “WELL…YOU SCARED POOR CICERO!” he snapped, he did not like the metal creature-woman...she was creepy.
Myrtle sighed in frustration “Janey dear, could you be a doll and fix me and Cicero something to eat? Something light on the stomach but filling”, Jane nodded, her screen-face flickering in acknowledgement “alrighty Ma’am, how does Deathclaw eggs benedict sound?”, “sounds absolutely delightful, can you make mine extra runny?”, “sure thing sugar!” Jane hummed as she wheeled away “oh, anything to drink with that?”, “I think I’ll have sarsaparilla-and-scotch on the rocks” Myrtle replied.
Cicero averted his eyes “um…miss?”, “hmm?...oh…” Myrtle whent back into her bathroom, finished showering off and got dressed in a very…alluring…black and red dress.
Cicero felt himself grow hot under his shirt collar, Myrtle took notice and smirked, she sat down on the bed “you know what? How about when you’ve recovered, before I take you to Usanagi, I show you around new vegas? Introduce you to the strip”, Cicero pondered “well…what is there to do here?”
Myrtle chuckled “all kinds of things~” she got up from the bed and sauntered over to the window “Over at Gomorrah you can have a night of passion and pleasure and all kinds of carnal delights, as long as you follow the rules and don’t get rough with the performers and escorts. Now that the Omerta’s prostitutes have unionized they pretty much own the place now”
She pointed to a very fancy and luxurious building “if your hungry or thirsty and want a high-quality meal the Ultra Lux has you covered, now that Gunderson and several of the other ranchers have banded together to supply us with fresh food you can get just about anything tasty and refined…then again I’ve eaten 2 week old beans out of the fridge so what do I know of class and style?”
“Over at the Tops you can catch a show, a musical performance or a comedy routine, Hadrian is pretty funny and can always make a crowd laugh. Vault 21 is a unique experience, if you wanna know what it’s like being in a vault go check it out. Over in freeside is the Atomic Wrangler, check it out if you want some good booze and a fun game of blackjack” she then turned to him “and the best place of all? Right here.”
“The Lucky 38 has everything all the others have…and more~” she grinned.
“You…own?...this place?” Cicero pondered, Myrtle snickered “dollface I OWN all of NEW VEGAS”, “she’s the bee's knees when it comes to the strip!” Jane said as she sat down two plates of food.
“How did you come to be so powerful?” Cicero wondered as he ate, the meal was wonderful as the gigantic eggs were cooked perfectly and smothered in a rich but light sauce. “My father’s grandfather was a clone of the previous ruler of the strip, Mr House” Myrtle said as she dug into her plate as well.
“Mr House knew he could not live forever, he knew there was a chance something could still happen to him so he cloned himself. Now being a man of experiments and science he wanted to see which of these clones would be a successful heir. So he cloned himself 4 times and marked each clone with a card suit on their right hand: Diamond, Heart, Club and Spade.
Out of the Clones from what he told me Diamond and Club waged war on eachother, one wanting total totalitarian dictatorship over the strip and the other wanting fascistic dominion” she turned to Cicero with a glum look in her eyes…
“Heart and my great-grandfather, Spade, managed to take them out before they could kill the original Mr House, Heart died in the process and Spade left the 38 to seek his own life. Now my old great-great-grandpa thought the experiment a failure when my great-grandpa left”.
She then smiled a little“man oh man, guess how shocked and surprised he was to find out his clone had continued the lineage of House, if just marked under a different name and his great-great-grand heir was the very courier he had hired to help him secure the strip! ” she chuckled.
Myrtle then sighed forlornly “I had convinced him to work with the NCR when a Legion assassin, Vulpes Inculta, broke in…I still don’t know how he was able to slip passed me but…he managed to open the pod containing my great-great-grandpa and inject him with cazador venom. I tried to save him but gramps told me that due to bacterial contamination just giving him antivenom and popping him back in wouldn’t work…he’d just die in a few days in agony…”
She sighed…
“I wish I had more time with my great-great-grandpa, he sounded like an asshole but he ment well.”
Cicero didn’t understand half of what she said…
“Clone?...” he pondered, feeling a bit stupid for asking, “it’s like a copy of something…in this case, someone” she replied.
As they finished eating, Jane came up to Myrtle “oh miss spade? Your admirers are waiting for you down stairs”, “thankyou Janey” she turned to Cicero “well I gotta go, I’am performing in the lounge tonight, you should rest up and take things easy, if you want you can watch my show on the big monitor in the living room”.
Cicero watched her leave, her hips sashaying as she harmonized and vocalized he way down the hall.
(Lucky 38 Cocktail Lounge)
“Hey King good to see you” Victor smiled as he welcomed the man into the Lucky 38, “good to see ya Victor good to see ya”, “you here to see one of Myrt’s shows?”, the man laughed “See? Brother, I’d never miss one of that little mama’s shows for the world”.
The stage was set and the lights were dimmed…
The King, Pacer and his boys sat in the vip seat with the other leaders of the strip. Hsu and some of the other NCR troopers sat with them, Marcus and Calamity joining them as well.
“Hi King” Myrtle coyly waved, King blushed and waved back.
“This song is a favorite of mine, it was written by a LEGEND of the Mojave and with all that's happening…I think we need a little more Love in this wasteland” she took a deep breath…
“~Hold me close, hold me tight, make me thrill with delight Let me know where I stand from the start I want you, I need you, I-I love you With all my heart Every time that you near, all my cares disappear Darling, you're all that I'm living for I want you, I need you, I-I love you More and more~”
Cicero watched and listened from the huge screen…Sithis her voice was like honey on velvet…
“~I thought I could live without romance
U-u-until you came to me
But now I know that I will go on
Lovin' you eternally
Won't you please be my own? Never leave me alone
'Cause I die every time we're apart
I want you, I need you, I-I love you
With all my heart~”
She began to dance as her voice rose with every lyric…
“~Well, I thought I could live without romance
U-u-u-unti-il you came to me
But now I know that I-I-I will go
On lovin' you eternally
Won't you please be my own? Never leave me alone
'Cause I die every time we're apart
I want you, I need you, I-I love you
With all my heart~”
She smiled as the crowd applauded

Lol, so... Peepers being huffy about X2 being a commander, so he uses his cognomen* "Marvin" instead.
And in turn? Marvin calls Peepers "Tom". But Marvin keeps twisting it into utterly cutesy pet names, like Tommie, Tomás, Toma, Tam, Thomas. Peepers would be mad if it wasn't so charming...
Some fun name head canons/explanations below:
With the cutesy Martian "Mar+" naming convention, it seems like the 'Mar' in the names means "of mars." With that in mind, here's a headcanon: Ants CAN count and counting is important for remembering routes. Ants also communicate with pheromones. X2 and various roman numerals can be converted into numbers. Maybe the Martian vocal language uses Roman numerals as written language? It would be funny if Martians developed language from using natural counting pheromone signals. Which leads to the text representing the pheromone language being numbers, in roman numerals. And then maybe spoken language based on the numerals? I know text comes after spoken language but hey its sci fi. Plus, the number language relates to centurion robots, coded with numbers, 1 and 0s.
And to further it home, Mars sounds like Mrrrz, an insect sound. Mars, Mrrrz, M's, and M in roman numerals means 1000, and many Ms are 1000s, so perhaps Mars is "the thousands years empire" and guess which empire lasted over 1000 years? The roman empire. :) The head canon is very fun. So, if we read the roman numerals, "Marvin" = "Vi N of mars",
N was shorthand for zero (nihil, zero), and vi = 6.
so Marvin is "The six zeros of Mars" or "The sixth zero of Mars" (note, it's NOT 60, 60 is LX) I'd like to think it could mean: "the sixth nothing of mars", or "the sixth fool of mars" Lol
and I think that's a fun interpretation! The Latin name "Vin" also meanings "conquering" so lol that's a fun coincidence considering irl the creator thought that the name Marvin sounded like a name of someone who doesn't accomplish much, and so Antwerp became Marvin. Thus "the sixth nothing of mars" fits. And hey, maybe Antwerp is a family name lol.
Either Marvin or X2 is the cognomen, but my bet is on Marvin. My guess is that his full name is something like "X2 Antwerp MarVIN"
*A cognomen is a nickname Roman names used, like "Ceasar" for Gaius Julius, nicknamed Caesar.
=============================
As for Peepers: Tom comes from a head canon of Peepers full name being:
Tom Seargent Cornealius Peepers Jnr.
which is funny because it can be shortened to TSC Peepers, and that sounds like "do ya see peepers" so lol.
Tom for a "Peeping Tom" pun and song reference Major Tom,
Seargent for the OG Yellow submarine Sgt. Peppers lonely hearts club band reference,
and Cornealius because of 'eyeball cornea' and Cornealius meaning (musical)'horn'--which is the main instrument in Peepers' theme.
And Jnr. since it's sounds "tiny", and I head canon he got his name from his late father, and hates it when his step-dad calls him jnr.

Tumblr media
Color code: All, Chouji, Shirasu
----
The gradation of day and night (Twilight time) The black and white destination (just the two of us) In the moments they blend together (always, in these moments) A miracle happens that changes history
With cold eyes I look up at (this world) This unsalvageable world and at days gone by To change my destiny (for that purpose) I stopped believing in anyone but you (alone with you)
Even on the iciest ground (the iciest ground) We walked through together Without any pretense We licked each other's dirty wounds
Beyond the billion (billion) Always dream on (dream on) On that day I ran away, with the moonlight as my guide Beyond the billion (billion) Black centurion (Baby) Now the future we promised is Mr. Trillion
The gradation of day and night (Twilight time) The black and white destination (just the two of us) In the moments they blend together (always, in these moments) A miracle happens that changes history
With nothing but the change in my pocket (with those coins) While faking away my hunger We stayed cool When we overtook the dream we spoke of I remember how lonely it felt (can't get it back)
Still losing your way and crying, at a loss No matter what happens, I decided Your hand is the one thing I'll never let go of
Beyond the billion (billion) Always dream on (dream on) Lit by the moonlight, let's become better than the best Beyond the billion (billion) Black centurion (Baby) We are still in the middle of our dream
Mr. Trillion Oh- 0-Oh-Eh-Oh
I secretly learned to be strong (I know) For someone I care more about than myself (you know) In the nooks and crannies of my forbidden and pure vow I will push through, just like that day
Beyond the billion (billion) Always dream on (dream on) On that day I ran away, with the moonlight as my guide Beyond the billion (billion) Black centurion (Baby) Now the future we promised is Mr. Trillion
The gradation of day and night (Twilight time) The black and white destination (just the two of us) In the moments they blend together (always, in these moments) A miracle happens that changes history

REBELLION by Simon Scarrow  (EAGLES OF EMPIRE 22)
AD.60 and Brittania is in chaos. Boudica has had a taste of victory against the formidable veterans in Camulodunum and she won’t stop now. How will Roman heroes Macro and Cato fare against the notorious Queen of the Britons?
A quick response to the rapidly advancing rebel forces, Governor Suetonius takes command leading his army to the besieged Londinium with prefect Cato and a mounted escort in tow. The grim reality of Britannia slipping deeper into chaos and hysteria becomes unmistakable as tribal warriors continue to swell the ranks of Boudica’s forces. Both Cato and Suetonius confront the sobering truth that minimal preparations have been made to confront a full-scale insurrection.
Meanwhile, in Londinium, a heart-wrenching revelation unfolds. Centurion Macro is among those missing following the Camulodunum massacre. Has Cato's loyal comrade, who has faced countless battles, met his ultimate challenge? As disaster looms, Cato readies himself for the next strategic move. Can he dare to hope that Macro, marked by battle and unflinching courage, has managed to evade these bloodthirsty rebels? In this pivotal military campaign, Cato knows that only one man he trusts stands beside him, and the fate of the Empire in Britannia hangs in the balance.

My Review: Note: you can read this book as a stand-alone but I think it’s a sort of follow-up to Death to the Emperor, the previous novel in this long series. Boudica’s rebellion is described in a lot of books but I think this one that describe is it could have been. It was gory, violent, sometime very cruel insurrection, a sort of guerrilla that nearly defeated Rome. The author did a good job in described the sense of confusion, the excitement, the violence. This age is not known for any type of Geneva treaty or piety, the Roman pietas is the sense of loyalty not any type of kindness The novel is fast paced, action packed, with some heartbreaking moments. There’s a lot violence and some scenes are a graphic description of what it was described by the historian so you’d better skip them if you are squeamish. I  was happy to catch up with Cato and Marco, felt for them and hope to read soon their new story as the aftermath of the rebellion won’t be easy. This story kept me reading till late in the night as I wanted to be sure that my favourite characters were going to survive. The storytelling is excellent and it’s well researched. There’s a lot of attention to the details. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
The Author: Simon Scarrow is a Sunday Times No. 1 bestselling author with several million copies of his books sold worldwide. After a childhood spent travelling the world, he pursued his great love of history as a teacher, before becoming a full-time writer. His Roman soldier heroes Cato and Macro made their debut in 2000 in UNDER THE EAGLE and have subsequently appeared in many bestsellers in the Eagles of the Empire series, including CENTURION, INVICTUS and DAY OF THE CAESARS. Many of the series have been Sunday Times bestsellers. REBELLION marks no.22 of Simon’s Eagles of the Empire Novels.
Simon Scarrow is also the author of a quartet of novels about the lives of the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon Bonaparte, YOUNG BLOODS, THE GENERALS, FIRE AND SWORD and THE FIELDS OF DEATH; a novel about the 1565 Siege of Malta, SWORD & SCIMITAR; HEARTS OF STONE, set in Greece during the Second World War; and PLAYING WITH DEATH, a contemporary thriller written with Lee Francis. He also wrote the novels ARENA and INVADER with T. J. Andrews. His first Berlin thriller, BLACKOUT set in WW2 Berlin and first published in 2021 was a Richard and Judy Book Club pick with DEAD OF NIGHT following to critical acclaim earlier in 2023.
Simon and ‘Eagle of the Empire’ series: Simon’s inspiration for the "Eagle of the Empire" series stems from a fascination with the Roman Empire's military and political intricacies. Scarrow's meticulous research and dedication to historical accuracy are evident in his works, where he skillfully weaves narratives around real historical events and figures. Simon has been inspired by his own life and experiences and sees himself in both his main characters Cato and Marco - Cato being who he was as a student and Marco who he has grown up to be. He has a knack for immersing readers in the ancient world and through his novels, he invites readers to embark on those journeys back in time, where empires clash in battles that have shaped the course of human history but encourages us to draw parallels to the political now through his stories of the then.
