The "Butterfly Effect" That is the LIV Golf Invitational
The “Butterfly Effect” That is the LIV Golf Invitational
LIV Golf. Yes, the golf tour backed by the unlimited coffers and stacks of Saudi money. LIV Golf Investments, the firm of which Greg Norman is the CEO and Tour Commissioner. Has it been a thorn in the proverbial side of the PGA TOUR or what? LIV Golf has really shaken up the golf world. LIV Golf has been the talk of the golf community – at large – and there are no signs of that trend, slowing…

There will be a new champion at the Rocket Mortgage Classic this week. Matt LaMarca Bryson DeChambeau headlines missed cuts at Rocket Mortgage Classic Joaquin Niemann is now the betting favorite at +400 on DraftKings Sportsbook, while Tom Lewis has the third-shortest odds at +1100. Both players are at 10-under-par for the tournament, which gives them a slim lead heading into the weekend. Lewis was a much more contrarian option, checking in with an approximate ownership of just 1.36%. That was the seventh-highest mark in the field, and it trailed only Bryson DeChambeau ($11,400 38%) and Jason Kokrak ($9,500 24.8%) among high-priced golfers. Niemann was one of the favorites, resulting in approximately 16.75% ownership in DraftKings tournaments. Niemann ($9,800) and Lewis ($7,200) both own a share of the lead heading into the weekend, but they started the week in very different camps. Round 2 Recap - Friday Joaquin Niemann and Tom Lewis lead after second round of Rocket Mortgage Classic DraftKings Sportsbook has Lebioda at +900 to win and Stallings at +25000. Both are still looking for their first win of the 2021 season - Lebioda’s best finish was fifth just last weekend at the Travelers Championship, and Stallings’ best was third place at the AT&T Byron Nelson in May. Both golfers achieved that score by way of seven birdies and one bogey. The performances moved Lebioda into a tie for third place at -13 overall, one stroke back of the lead, while Stallings jumped to a tie for 15th at nine-under. Lebioda ($7,200 86.5 DKFP) and Stallings ($7,100 66 DKFP) both went six-under on Saturday, besting the field for the day. Alex Rikleen Hank Lebioda, Scott Stallings climb leaderboard on Saturday at Rocket Mortgage Classic Niemann is still favored to win on DraftKings Sportsbook at +200, but Merritt is right behind him at +400. The top of the leaderboard is still tight, with Cameron Davis ($7,200 85 DKFP) and Hank Lebioda ($7,200 86.5 DKFP) both at -13 and seven more golfers at -11 or -12. Both leaders notched four birdies Saturday, but Merritt added a hole-in-one eagle and a bogey. Merritt ($7,100 113 DKFP) went five-under on Saturday, moving into a tie with Niemann ($9,800 101 DKFP) at -14 overall ahead of Sunday’s finale. Round 3 Recap - Saturday Troy Merritt catches Joaquin Niemann atop Rocket Mortgage Classic leaderboard Hank Lebioda ($7,200 106.5 DKFP) tied with Noren for fourth while Brandon Hagy ($6,200 100 DKFP) tied with Watson for sixth. Noren finished just one shot behind the three leaders after nine birdies on the day, and Watson rebounded from his meltdown at the Travelers Championship last week and sunk eight birdies in his bogey-free round on Sunday. Watson ($9,200 106 DKFP) and Alex Noren ($7,600 103.5 DKFP) each fired eight-under rounds of 64 in the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic but weren’t quite able to make up enough ground to get into the playoff. Zach Thompson Bubba Watson bounces back, charges leaderboard but misses playoff

It was the 26-year-old Australian’s 71st start on the PGA TOUR and his third professional win, having won on the Web.com Tour and the PGA TOUR of Australasia. They played five playoff holes before Merritt slipped up and bogeyed, which gave Davis his first career PGA TOUR win with a par. Niemann entered the playoff bogey-free for 72 holes on the week but bogeyed the first hole of the playoff while Davis and Merritt made par and continued on. This week, third round co-leaders Joaquin Niemann ($9,800 118 DKFP) and Troy Merritt ($7,100 130 DKFP) were joined by Cameron Davis ($7,200 132 DKFP) in a three-way playoff. Round 4 Recap - Sunday Cameron Davis wins Rocket Mortgage Classic after three-way playoffĪfter an epic eight-hole playoff last week, the PGA TOUR needed extra holes to decide a champion for the second straight week. A marquee member for Europe in international team play, Stenson has appeared in five Ryder Cups, helping lead Europe to victories in three of those competitions (2006, 2014, 2018). Stenson will join Majesticks GC, captained by former world No. 1 and fellow Englishman Lee Westwood.

Howell III will play for Crushers GC, led by 2020 U.S. Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau.
Howell III, Kokrak and Stenson join a Bedminster field that will showcase 11 major champions with a combined 21 majors won, four former world No. 1 players and nearly half of its competitors currently ranked in the top 100. The global field represents 13 different countries, features 18 players with 10 or more professional wins and includes future stars of the game who have earned NCAA National Championships and US Amateur Championships among their accomplishments. "Fore" Takeaways from the Charles Schwab Challenge
“Fore” Takeaways from the Charles Schwab Challenge
1. Did Daniel Berger win it or did Collin Morikawa lose it?
It seems like the winner of the Charles Schwab Challenge is being overshadowed by those who failed to get it done. Collin Morikawa’s short birdie miss on 18 and then his 3-foot lip out on 18 cost him the title. Xander Schauffele cost himself a chance of being in the playoff by also missing a nasty 3-footer on 17 which did a horseshoe…

It’s all about the FedEx Cup this week
Some big names missing, but still big money ahead at Tour Championship
The field for the Tour Championship is set, and why it is even being called that remains a bit of a mystery. It’s all about the FedEx Cup, the season-ending tournament on the PGA Tour schedule and the culmination of a three-tournament playoff series.
So, really, it’s all about the money.
Sure, the winner in Atlanta will be credited with a tour victory even if he doesn’t shoot the lowest 72-hole score, and he’ll haul away a cool Cup, although it’s unclear if it would be big enough to hold the $15 million.
When the PGA Tour unveiled its FedEx Cup format in 2007, much of the buzz was about the money. It was a surefire way to attract attention as well as the players, who drifted aimlessly following the PGA Championship as the golf season limped to a conclusion prior to the FedEx Cup format.
Back then, the bonus money to the winner was a whopping $10 million. This year, it is $15 million, with an overall pool of $60 million being divvied up.
Brooks Koepka all but said as much when he replied to a Twitter troll calling him out for not “trying hard” and suggesting he stop playing and “go drive a truck.”
Koepka’s reply:
“Brink’s truck?”
Yep, that kind of sums it up this week in Atlanta, where even the last-place finish will earn $385,000.
Justin Thomas, who won for the 10th time on the PGA Tour with his victory Sunday at the BMW Championship, gets to sleep on a two-shot lead for the next several days before he even tees off at East Lake.
As part of the new format, there will be a staggered-strokes start as opposed to a FedEx Cup points reset, meaning that Thomas will start at 10 under par, with Patrick Cantlay two strokes back at 8 under, followed by Koepka at 7 under all the way down to the final qualifier, Jason Kokrak, at even par.
As crazy as it sounds, it will be far easier to follow than in years past, as it’s now strokes on the scoreboard, with points eliminated. There is that pesky matter of no separate tournament champion being crowned, but the biggest potential issue was eliminated when Tiger Woods failed to qualify for the Tour Championship.
He won’t be able to defend his title, but really, there is no title to defend. The one he captured last year — his 80th PGA Tour title after five years without a victory — is no longer at stake. Only the winner of the FedEx Cup gets a trophy. Had the same rules been in place a year ago, Woods would have not been celebrating anything.
“It’s disappointing,” Woods said. “I wish I could have [qualified]. Last year culminated in a pretty special moment for me and it would have been nice to go back there, but I’ll be watching the guys on TV.”
Woods will not be alone in watching from afar. Some other big names also will sit out the Tour Championship.
Phil Mickelson, who won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, never posted another top-10 this season and had just one top-20. He ended up 48th in the points.
“I’ve had a rough four, five months,” he said. “Probably the worst four, five months stretch of my career. I’m looking forward to having a couple of months off and kind of regrouping and come back fresh.”
Jason Day is also looking forward to a break. The Aussie has struggled for most of this year. Since tying for fifth at the Masters, he has posted just a single top-10 finish. He has dropped to 22nd in the world and came in at 54th in the FedEx standings.
“Below average,” said Day, who didn’t qualify for Atlanta for the first time since 2012. “Very disappointing. I didn’t make the Tour Championship but it happens. Looking forward to some time off.”
So is Jordan Spieth, who for the second straight year didn’t qualify for the season-ending event, this time by a mile. Spieth, who has dropped to 31st in the world, showed glimmers of progress this summer, but he still has not won on the PGA Tour in more than two years. He was 44th in the points.
“I’ve just gotten too inconsistent, too far off in the long game,” Spieth said. “It went down to the short game, but tremendous improvement in my putting. I know exactly why I got off, what happened and how to get it back.”
And so while some high-profile names will be missing at East Lake, the likes of Thomas, Koepka, Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Matt Kuchar, Gary Woodland, Tony Finau, Adam Scott, defending FedEx champ Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler will battle it out for the big money.
So will Sungjae Im, Kokrak and Abahram Ancer, all of whom qualified for their first Tour Championship and thus the Masters.
The money is nice, but getting that Masters invitation might actually be worth a lot more.
