BRF Reading - 27th of February, 2024
This is speculation only
Cards drawn on the 27th of February, 2024
Note: I used all upright cards for this reading, so there are no reversals.
Question: How is Princess Catherine feeling?
Tumblr media
Interpretation: She is having a good rest and gaining inner strength and confidence.
Card One: Th Eight of Pentacles
The is the Mastery card or the Apprentice card. It is about gaining mastery of a skill or a topic - putting in the hard work to lean new skills and to acquire competence in them.
The energy from this card is that Princess Catherine is using this time to increase her skills and practise her skills in certain areas. There is a small energy of learning new skills, but the main energy is of practising things she already knows and getting better at implementing them. These could be in any area, but the feeling I am getting is that it is skills of self nurture (looking after herself) and as part of that, how to deal with invasions of her boundaries, e.g. the media intrusions into her medical issue, the spiteful attacks of the Harkles etc. She is learning how to increase her defences against them.
Card Two: The Six of Cups
This is the card of nostalgia, of looking back at the past (usually through rose coloured glasses) and remembering how good it was, and wanting to return to that state. It is also a card of children.
The energy of this card is of nostalgia for the past, but nostalgia as part of healing - remember it, feel a bit sad that it can't return, and let it go. It is not a clinging to the past or a desire to return to it whatever the cost, as sometimes happens with this card.
The children energy is very much love and concern for her own children. She is giving as much of herself as she can to them while she is recovering, as she is still actively being a mother to them, even though she is resting and healing. She is very much involved in their lives and has not e.g. cut herself off from them.
The Six of Cups is also a card of healing, so I think Catherine is healing both physically and emotionally in her home environment with her family around her.
Card Three: The Page of Wands
Pages are messages, and or children, and/or new beginnings, the start of something, and it is this third meaning that is coming through this card. It has the energy of a new beginning or a new understanding with respect to PR. Combined with the Eight of Pentacles this could be learning to use PR to her advantage, in ways she had not thought of or noticed before. It could also be sending out new messages via PR. The main energy here is of newness, of the beginning of something a bit different.
Underlying Energy: The Five of Pentacles
In this reading, the strongest and most dominant energy came from this underlying card and its two clarifiers. The Five of Pentacles is a card of exile, of being left out in the cold. In this reading, the energy is of a happy exile. Catherine is enjoying her time away from the working side of the BRF. She is enjoying being in exile and having a rest, and being able to devote herself to healing and her family. It is not a sad or unhappy energy at all. She is quite happy to be left out of BRF things at the moment, as she has the most important things to her - her family - all around her.
Clarifier One: The Four of Swords: I drew two cards to clarify this energy and make sure I was reading it correctly. The first card was the Four of Swords, which is a card of rest and recuperation. That is exactly what Catherine is doing, and it confirms that this period of being in 'exile' is not a hardship for her.
Clarifier Two: The World: This is the card of the ending of one cycle and the beginning of another. It is a time to review the past, see what worked and what didn't, and to move on to a new stage of life. As a health card, it tells me that her journey back to full health will come to a successful conclusion.
Catherine is taking this time to prepare for a move into a new stage of her life. She is reviewing the past and deciding what actions/events/people she will keep in the future, and which she will let go. There is a strong, measured, confident energy from this card.
The World card is the card for the planet Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, which tells me that Catherine is entering a stage of knowing exactly who she is as a person and what she will or will not tolerate. I expect to see her return from her healing time in her full Capricorn glory, self confident and inwardly stable, knowing her strengths and limitations and working with them.
Conclusion:
Princess Catherine is enjoying her time away from the BRF. She is becoming more skilled in certain areas of her life and gently letting go of the past. She likes being able to put all her focus on being a mother to her children (i.e. not having to divide her time between them and work) and she likes having her family around her. She may have a new appreciation of certain aspects of PR or be planning something new concerning PR for her return to royal life.
Princess Catherine is resting, healing, and enjoying this quiet time away from the day to day responsibilities of her life as a working royal. She is becoming more self confident and more aware of herself - her strengths and her limits - as a result of this quiet time. She may be in 'exile', unseen by the world, but it is a restful and peaceful time which is exactly what she needs right now,

I’m so interested to hear your thoughts on the announcement HoB.
Unpopular opinion probably but me personally - I’m not buying it. It wouldn’t have taken this long to reveal cancer post her surgery date.
Nor do I buy that William is the hero that Kensington Palace is desperately trying to paint him as. It’s crass how their children are used as human shields in that statement.
It will be interesting to see the online reaction to this because the timeline on this story is fishy as hell and against Willy is hiding behind her skirt to save his reputation.
Tumblr media
So I listened to Sky News for the announcement and the immediate commentary afterwards, which included an oncologist.
I think it's important to remember that she does NOT have an active cancer diagnosis, which people seem to be forgetting. Her own statement said "preventative chemotherapy," which as the oncologist on Sky News clarified is an adjuvant therapy. Adjuvant therapies are something to prevent cancer from returning, not active cancer treatment. The Sky News oncologist speculated that she was diagnosed with colon cancer, which has already been treated.
The sequence of events seems to be that she had "major abdominal surgery," which was probably on her colon. They did routine pathology on the tissue that was removed. Pathology usually takes seven to ten days to confirm. The pathology on an unspecified amount of tissue came back as cancerous.
They've known about this since February. She was not diagnosed with this in March. It seems to be more that she had some kind of emergency abdominal surgery in January--due to an intestinal blockage, perforation, or whatever. Recovery in the hospital for almost two weeks, which not even every colon cancer patient requires. They received the pathology results after she probably got out of the hospital. She started adjuvant therapy/"preventative chemotherapy" after her medical team determined it was appropriate post-surgery.
I know everyone is freaking out about CANCER, but she does not currently have cancer. Again, her own statement "cancer had been present." (Past tense!) She had some cancer that was removed during surgery, which may not have even been a surgery designed to remove cancer in the first place, and is now doing preventative therapy.
The problem with all of this is that they've known that she's had this SINCE FEBRUARY. It doesn't take two months for pathology to come back. That's where the PR problems are clearly evident. We all know when the kids go on break. They had a week long break in February, and they didn't announce this when they could have.
If they really had wanted to just wait until the kids were out of school for almost a month, then why didn't they create a strategy based on that weeks ago? Why release the problematic Mother's Day photo if you were planning on making an announcement when the kids are going to be out of school a few weeks later? Why not make a better strategy in dealing with the press? Why throw a fit about Carole & Kate being photographed on a public road? Why throw a fit over The Colonel's Review in June?
Oh, wait, all is supposed to be forgiven now because Kate HAD cancer.
HAD.
Past tense people.
King Charles has an ACTIVE cancer diagnosis. Kate's cancer has already been solved. It was solved back in January when it was removed during surgery. She is only doing preventative treatment currently to decrease the future risk.
But, hey, Kensington Palace and Catherine used the c-word (CANCER!), so all those previous fuckups should be forgiven.

🇺🇦🇷🇺 🚨 UKRANIAN AUTHORITIES TO CLOSE THE "ANCIENT CHERNIGOV" ORTHODOX CHURCH AFTER TRANSFER TO STATE OWNERSHIP
The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) announced the closure of the "Ancient Chernigov" Church located in Chernikov city in the northeast of Ukraine Wednesday.
According to the UOC, the ancient churches of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve, the "Ancient Chernigov" church is to be closed after transfer to State-ownership, and only churches that are part of the "Orthodox Church of Ukraine" (OCU), an entity invented by Ukrainian authorities in response to Russia's Special Military Operation launched in February 2022, are to remain accessible.
Just one day earlier, on Tuesday November 14th, a commission as part of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine completed the work of transferring to state-ownership the objects of the National Architectural and Historical Reserve "Ancient Chernigov", including the churches and cathedrals used by the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), as reported by the department.
According to the report, the UOC states that some monuments are in "unsatisfactory condition" and recommended the agency carry out restoration and conservation work.
According to the website for the UOC, “From the very beginning of the commission’s review, the churches of the UOC were closed to the public, access to them was blocked by people in camouflage uniforms. As for the published conclusions about the state of architectural monuments, for believers in the Chernihiv region they will mean that the Trinity, Spassky and Assumption churches, along with the relics Saints Theodosius and Philaret and Saint Lawrence of Chernigov will be taken away from the UOC and closed to visitors. Churches of the OCU remain freely accessible."
The Ukrainian authorities, over the last year, have launched successive waves of persecution against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for its supposed connections with Russia. This comes at a time when simply praising something considered Russian can lead to suspicions, oppression and even imprisonment as Russia's Special Military Operation closes in on the end of its second year.
Local authorities in various regions of Ukraine have banned the activities of the UOC, while the Ukrainian Parliament passed in its first reading, a bill to ban the UOC and its activities throughout the country.
In some cases, sanctions have been imposed on certain representatives of UOC Clergy; while the Ukrainian Intelligence Services (SBU) has opened investigations into members of the clergy, conducting "counterintelligence activities" against clergy members, including conducting searches of churches and monasteries, as well as Bishops and priests.
According to the report, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture examined 18 objects, including the building complexes of the Yelets and Trinity monasteries, the Transfiguration Cathedral, Pyatnitskaya and the Catherine churches.

Theme Song: Homesick by Noah Kahan
Summary: Megan has to go back to her hometown for Christmas after leaving her fiance at the altar 5 years ago. She decides she needs a fake boyfriend to face her village and Christian is the man for the job.
Review:
I love Christmas! At the time of writing this, it is almost February so the memory of this book is quickly fading. I really enjoyed the writing style and the dialogue between Megan and Christian. They felt like real people and I really believed in their relationship. If anything, this book could have leaned in to the season even more. They felt very real, but they could have used some classic, romance novel stupidity. Why did Christian keep his corporate job instead of coming home to take over the family farm? Why did Megan prefer her life in the big city when she could be frolicking in the Irish countryside? I would have taken a couple more ridiculous tropey subplots because that’s fun! I still really liked it and would willingly read more Christmas romance novels even though it’s almost Valentine's Day.
-Margo
7/10 stars
Additional Ratings
Sexy Sex: 7/10
They tried to have sex in a car but they got caught. Points for effort.
Trauma Score: 10/10
She had to return to her HOMETOWN. Horrifying.
Nicknames: No Score
They decided not to use any pet names for each other early on and they didn't. Score one for the anti-pet name agenda.
Notes: This book really emphasizes how you should never EVER visit your hometown.

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said on Monday he had no intention of resigning and hoped the EU would continue to fund his agency, after allegations staff members were involved in the Hamas attack on Israel.
"No, I have no intention to resign," Lazzarini, who heads the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, told reporters in Brussels following a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
Members of the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu have called on Lazzarini to step down after serious allegations against his staffers emerged.
"We have one government calling for (my) resignation. We might have other voices, but I haven't heard any other government," Lazzarini explained.
Last month, Tel Aviv claimed 12 UNRWA staff members were involved in the October 7 attacks launched by Hamas against Israel, which killed over 1,200 Israelis and sparked a war in Gaza that has claimed the lives of more than 26,000 Palestinians.
The grave accusation, revealed by Israel on the same day the UN's top court ordered it to prevent genocide in Gaza, sparked fears of possible infiltration by Hamas, designated a terrorist organisation by the EU, into the Western-funded UN agency.
Lazzarini suggested, however, that Israel had yet to provide evidence to substantiate its accusations.
Over the weekend, the Israeli Defence Forces also alleged they had uncovered Hamas’ data and communications centre in a tunnel directly beneath UNRWA's Gaza headquarters. Lazzarini has since said he had no knowledge of the tunnel.
Following discussions with representatives of the European Commission, Lazzarini said there was a "mutual commitment" to address the concerns that prompted the EU executive to launch a review into its funding to UNRWA.
Whilst the Commission assured its humanitarian assistance would continue "unabated" following the allegations, it suggested its €82 million donation in development aid due in late February would be conditional on UNRWA auditing its recruitment procedures, bolstering its internal oversight mechanisms and vetting its 30,000-strong workforce.
Lazzarini said that his conversations with Commissioners on the issue had been "very constructive."
Josep Borrell, the bloc's foreign policy chief, strongly suggested that EU cash would flow as anticipated given that UNRWA had launched the investigation the bloc had called for.
"The Commission has never asked for the investigation to finish, but to be launched," Borrell said. "We are clever enough to understand that this can not be finished in 20 days."
The independent review into UNRWA is being led by former French foreign minister Catherine Colonna. An interim report is expected in late March.
Defunding UNRWA 'will affect Europeans'
Several nations have paused payments to UNRWA in the wake of the scandal. These include Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States, in a devastating blow to the donor-reliant agency.
Lazzarini said that if governments maintain their decisions, it would strip UNRWA of $450 million (€418 million) this year alone. He said he was engaged with "a number of countries" to assess their expectations to allow the release of these funds.
Without any freeze in funding, the agency's cash flow would have been secured until July, Lazzarini noted, but the announced suspensions meant it would be negative as of March.
A defiant Borrell said such decisions amounted to "collective punishment" rather than "individual accountability."
"To discontinue the support of UNRWA would mean the interruption of vital services to millions of people in need, and a greater humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which has to be avoided," Borrell told reporters.
"Not only because it is a humanitarian imperative. But also because it would have dangerous repercussions on regional stability and would affect Europeans too."
While seven member states have paused funding, other countries, like Spain, Belgium and Ireland, have firmly backed the agency's role in the Palestinian Territories and the broader region, with some even calling on the Commission to boost its financial aid.
In his remarks on Monday, Borrell slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for attempts to "cancel" the work of UNRWA. He assured that only when statehood has been given to Palestinians that the agency's work can be rightfully discontinued, saying that its existence 75 years after it was founded was in itself "deplorable."
On Sunday, a committee in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, approved a draft bill to end the operations of UNRWA in Jerusalem, and will be voted on preliminary on Wednesday.
Rafah situation 'extraordinarily challenging'
Lazzarini also decried the situation in Gaza's southern town of Rafah, which Israel claims is Hamas' last stronghold and where overnight the Israeli forces launched a military offensive. About 1.4 million Palestinians are estimated to be in the area after fleeing from other parts of Gaza.
Israel has ordered them to evacuate, but Borrell explained incredulity at the demand given that they cannot flee south past the Egyptian border.
"They are going to evacuate where? To the moon? Where are they going to evacuate these people?" he questioned.
Lazzarini explained that UN agencies are unable to operate with the minimum required protection because the local police force "might not be functional anymore, since many of them have been killed" and many officers are reluctant to assist because aid convoys had been targeted by "hundreds of young people."
"The coming days will tell us if yes or not, we will be able to continue to operate in an extraordinary, extraordinary, challenging environment," he explained

Books Read, May 2023
I've thought of starting a book blog before, but alas - I never have enough to say when I don't have someone to bounce off of, or at least can't figure out how to say it. Plus, I mostly read nonfiction, so...probably not the most thrilling reviews. In lieu of that...here's what I read in May.
Courting Scandal: The Rise and Fall of Jane Boleyn, Lady Rochford - James Taffe
Jane Boleyn: The True Story of the Infamous Lady Rochford - Julia Fox
Young and Damned and Fair: The Life of Catherine Howard, Fifth Wife of King Henry VIII - Gareth Russell
Inside the Tudor Court: Henry VIII and His Six Wives Through the Writings of the Spanish Ambassador Eustace Chapuys - Lauren Mackay
Wolsey: The Life of King Henry VIII's Cardinal - John Matusiak
Cardinal Wolsey - Mandell Creighton
Remembering Wolsey: A History of Commemorations and Representations - J. Patrick Hornbeck II.
The Life and Death of Thomas Wolsey Cardinal: Once Archbishop of York and Lord Chancellor of England - Sir William Cavendish
Obviously, I got 'on a tangent,' as I do sometimes. I've gathered this may have something to do with the ADHD, though not from particularly official sources, so don't quote me on that. In this case, it was partially a return to old tangents; while I'd not read the last three books on this list before, my reading journal indicates I previously went on a bit of a tangent on the subject of Cardinal Wolsey in February and March of 2021. I was also immensely pleased, in my Kindle recommendations earlier this month, to find a book on Chapuys; he was always one of those background figures in the historical fictions I read as a kid that I wished I knew more about. Gotta read his letters myself sometime, since it seems, from the Google, that they can be viewed online in English translation.
I'll give Lauren Mackay this: she's much more honest than a lot of authors are when she reached places where the information simply no longer exists, or at least hasn't been recovered yet. There was enough 'prose' to keep it interesting, but not excessive attempts to state things about the ambassador that she couldn't back up with evidence. This, I felt, was in sharp contrast to Julia Fox; I loved the descriptions of the court, the attempts to tell a story, and these things definitely have a place in history-writing, but here they were fairly blatantly...fluffy, I suppose. Now, I'm hardly one to complain of fluff, rather fond of soft things myself, but it was glaringly obvious, when she said Lady Rochford must have been thinking or feeling something, that she was essentially filling in the blanks with a story of her own devising. Sometimes the 'costume' of historicity the text wore was something it looked 'comfortable' in and sometimes it was quite obviously a poorly-researched French hood shoved awkwardly onto the head of an actress with zero knowledge of sixteenth century fashion and how to wear it, but there were always leaps from one point to another. In contrast to that, I felt that Gareth Russell balanced his reader-drawing prose fluff with his historical analysis much more adeptly when considering Catherine Howard; I've read his book more than once over the past couple of years and expect I'll read it again in years to come. I came away with no impression of James Taffe's work, alas, except that he clearly wrote his book as an exasperated rebuttal to Julia Fox; I was, unfortunately, very sleep-deprived when I read that, so I'll have to read it again sometime. My lack of sleep, however, is not why I read the rebuttal first and the book it was responding to second...even though I'd had Fox's book in my physical TBR shelves for several years and only stumbled across Taffe's the day I bought it. I'm told I've always had a tendency to do things in the wrong order and somehow make it work anyway, so why mess with a good system at this point?
As for one book being a rebuttal to another - here we come to one of my favorite things about reading history, which is to say, how often historians blatantly attack or support each other in their writing. In the last couple of chapters of Remembering Wolsey, I was irrationally delighted to see the author offer opinions on every book I read during my 2021 tangent as well as one of the ones I read this time around. It's amusing (to me) to sort of...get to know the different personalities: "hm, yes, I can see why someone would say that about Ives," or "yeah, I never did get Starkey's position on that, all things considered," or "ha, that was almost the exact same thing I said two years ago about Ridley!" It's...oddly cozy, I suppose.
Hornbeck was especially interesting as he wasn't writing about what happened - he was writing about the trends in how people have remembered what happened over the past few centuries. There were interesting thoughts on historical fiction throughout, especially near the end; that one may warrant a full independent review, if I can muster the energy to write it out. For now, however - there's all the reading I did in May.

“You have to integrate the actors into the research process. The performance they create with Baz is really a key part of the costuming process. I’m just an adjunct to the creation of the character. I think actors are like flowers, and the clothes are a vase. It’s all about integrating what the director and actor are creating.”

[Image ID: Ron Bass, the screenwriter from Netflix Persuasion, says he’s working on similar treatments for Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Meme below shows Lizzie Bennet from 2005 P&P reacting with dread to the pitiful flower Mr. Collins is offering her. Mr. Collins is labeled Ron Bass, Lizzie is labeled Austen fandom, and the flower is labeled screenplays for P&P and S&S. /.End ID]

How every Austen hero sucks at dating:
Darcy: basically tells his girl that he's too good for her while proposing
Bingley: ghosts his true love for several months because his friend and sisters told him to
Knightley: scolds and argues with his girl constantly
Wentworth: revenge flirts with a random girl because he's too dumb to see that he still loves his first girl
Edward: flirts with his girl when he's already engaged to another girl
Brandon: falls in love at first sight and proceeds to basically never talk to his girl, just her sister
Edmund: thinks he loves a girl who is all wrong for him just because she's hot, while ignoring the much better girl right under his nose
Tilney:

Look it’s 100% fine to like Joe Wright’s awkward Darcy, as a new character, it’s just not Jane Austen’s actual Darcy, whose characterization was so important that she put it in the title

While we’re on the topic of Tissaia’s hands, I noticed this on one of my skim throughs.
I liked how similar the hand gestures were. The first to purchase Yennefer, the second to stop Stregobor from hurting her. (Both arguably saving her.)

Okay the scene in 2.03 where Yenn is leaning against Tissaia. How do you think they shot that so that Anya and MyAnna looked to be the same height? Because all I can imagine is that incredible powerhouse of a woman did that scene standing on an apple box and it makes me laugh every time I think of it
I have been laughing about this since I read it, anon.
I wouldn't put it past her to be that intimidating while perched on a box, I can tell you that much.
For the artistically inclined among you, I have helpfully included a screenshot with an area you can fill in with your ideas.
Tumblr media
Ridiculous answers only, please. I don't want anybody telling me that Anya is standing further back, or that she's barefoot while MyAnna is wearing six inch platform shoes.

so many quizzes lately want to tell you exactly what's wrong with you, what deeply buried trauma you're secretly harboring, or whether or not you qualify to be shaken in a Pringles can. for a refreshing reprieve, answer some questions and i'll assign you a random book off my bookshelf! not a lot of deep psychoanalysis here, just some appreciation of literature.
