A fortified residency on the Vistula River in Kraków, it was established on the orders of King Casimir III the Great and enlarged over the centuries into a number of structures around an Italian-styled courtyard. BMG, FOLLOWING ‘MORE EFFICIENT AND MORE EFFECTIVE’ STRATEGY UNDER NEW CEO THOMAS COESFELD, REORGANIZES STRUCTURE; AROUND 40 STAFF CUT

Thomas Coesfeld, CEO of BMG since July, has made another major move at the Bertelsmann-owned company.

MBW revealed in September that, under Coesfeld, BMG was taking the digital distribution of its music in-house – bringing its longstanding distribution deal with Warner Music Group/ADA to an end. (BMG has since confirmed that, while keeping digital distribution in-house, it’s inked a deal with Universal Music Group to handle its physical distribution business.)

Now, Coesfeld is enacting another set of significant changes at BMG, which posted an operating EBITDA of €90 million ($97m), up 22.6% YoY, in the first six months of 2023.

Berlin-based Coesfeld this week confirmed to staff that BMG is reorganizing its global structure in pursuit of his strategic goal for the company to become “more efficient and more effective”.

The biggest change under that plan will see BMG discontinue its centralized international marketing department for recordings, which to date has been led by the company’s EVP Global Repertoire, Fred Casimir.

In an internal note, issued to staff on Thursday (October 26) and obtained by MBW, Coesfeld said: “The international marketing team was set up five years ago in response to the needs of the company at the time.

“Our talented team have done a great job, driving international campaigns for artists including Lenny Kravitz, Kylie Minogue, and Louis Tomlinson, but unfortunately on a business level, expectations from this novel structure were not met and it created duplication of functions with local teams.

“The clear business decision is to instead give artists a single contact point with their local repertoire teams.”

In addition, Coesfeld has green-lit four other significant alterations to BMG’s structure: (i) The discontinuation of BMG’s Modern Recordings label based in Berlin; (ii) The closure of the firm’s New York-based theatrical productions initiative; (iii) No more active commissioning of new films to take place at BMG; and (iv) The consolidation of BMG’s New York and Canada-based recorded music operations into its Los Angeles office.

In total, MBW has confirmed, these changes – including the international marketing function closure – will affect 3% of BMG’s global staff, equating to around 40 employees. Fred Casimir will be leaving the company later this year as part of the move.

“These are tough but necessary decisions,” said Coesfeld in the Thursday internal note to BMG staff. “I would like to extend my thanks to the team members involved on behalf of everyone at BMG. They have done us proud. They were given the news only today, and I understand it has been a shock. We are in close contact with them and in Germany with our Workers Council to ensure everything is handled in a respectful way.”

Elsewhere in the internal memo, BMG confirmed that it is “on target” to begin distributing its own recorded music to streaming services such as Spotify from Wednesday next week (November 1).

In addition to becoming a “more efficient and more effective” business, Coesfeld’s comments in the memo outlined three other core strategies that form part of his “four-point plan” for the company this year.

The other points in this plan include “better engaging with our clients and partners”, “renewing BMG’s culture”, and “investing money wisely”.

Referencing the latter point, the internal BMG memo said that the company recently introduced “a new deal-modelling tool and new deal-approval routines to create more rigor in the system”.

As a result of the closure of BMG’s international marketing function, the company’s artists will no longer have two marketing contact points (domestic and international).

Their sole contact point for marketing going forward will be the repertoire team to which they are signed.

“Much like our distribution alliance with Warner Music/ADA struck in 2016, our previous international set-up – established around the same time – was the right decision back then,” said Coesfeld in Thursday’s memo.

“It allowed us to grow and was the ideal structure for the time. Our recordings business is now three times the size it was then and it’s overwhelmingly streaming-based. It is no surprise that the way we manage our business also has to change.

“While the logic of this move is clear, however, we should not underestimate the impact on our colleagues. Our best wishes are with them and BMG will do what we can as a company to help them at this time.”

When contacted by MBW, a BMG spokesperson said today (October 28): “Just as we have insourced our digital distribution because we had outgrown the old set-up, so we are changing the way we do international to reflect the scale we have now achieved.

“A centralised international department made sense when our local repertoire teams were not as strong as we are now. We’ve addressed that and a centralised function is no longer needed. As the only global player outside the three majors, international continues to lie at the heart of what we do. We’ll just do it differently.

“It’s far better to make changes like these from a position of strength when you’re performing well, rather than leaving it too late”

“Obviously these are tough decisions to make, but there’s better ways to invest this money to improve our service to clients and you can expect further announcements on improvements to our service offering imminently.

“97% of the BMG team are unaffected by these changes.”

Now, time to smother you all with little tidbits or ideas!

Not only is he a Narrator, but he's also a Polish "Lektor"! For those who don't know what a lektor is, if you've ever watched something with one of those extremely monotone language dubs over it (most commonly, Polish), the person dubbing it is what a Lektor does essentially. In Poland, it's generally a generic, 50 year old male's monotone voice dubbing over everything into Polish. It's miserable as a person who's bilingual and trying to listen to both audios at once to fully understand everything. So, yeah, he's one of those dudes.

Also, did you know that commonly Polish names are actually translated into English ones? That's why I call Stanley "Stanisław", because that's what his Polish name would be :3

Also in this AU of sorts Stanley would be like someone OF Polish descent but he never fully learned how to speak Polish (can understand it, and speak it a BIT. its very broken though) and the Narrator (Nikodem) just so happened to have gotten a protagonist that wasn't able to speak back at him teehee (so Stanley isn't mute but still doesn't speak bc of language barrier because Nikodem acts as if he doesn't understand English everytime Stan tries to speak back at him)

Also!! Narrator called Stanley 'Stan' because Stanley, Stanisław, yeah you get it. It's just to please them both language wise. Also Narrator's last name (Niedzielnik) comes from the word niedziela which means Sunday. (Also the two of them have a joke that every Sunday is Narrator day because of Narrator's last name haha)

The Narrator also loves to insult/talk shit about Stanley to his face in Polish because Stanley was never taught insults in Polish so he understands NONE of it. Also loves to make fun of Stanley's accent when he talks.

They bond over making Polish food. 100%. Fight me about it.

Also Narrator is a big religion guy even though he he's BASICALLY God in TSP:UD lmao because Polish people are so fucking Catholic it's insane (I say, as a Pole. I'm not religious sorry lol)

Also Stanley comes from England because fuck you (no actually it's because there's a shit ton of Polish people in Britain.) And he's a Polish history nerd. He may not be able to speak Polish but he CAN recite to you everything Kazimierz (III) Wielki (Casimir III the Great) did to reform Poland. He can tell you every important date in Polish history. And he will. (Nikodem hates him for it and is unwilling to admit he's learned a lot of English terms and stuff from Stan's rambling)

Zamek Książąt Mazowieckich, Ciechanów (część 1 z 2)

Kiedy zaczęto budować zamek ciechanowski, a było to ok. roku 1355, na Mazowszu, które było osobnym księstwem, panował książę Siemowit III z linii Piastów Mazowieckich. Na pozostałych terenach Polski kończył się wówczas proces zjednoczenia, po tzw. rozbiciu dzielnicowym. Rządził tam, ostatni król dziedziczny, Kazimierz Wielki, także z linii Piastów, który „zastał Polskę drewnianą a zostawił murowaną”. Na ziemie polskie najeżdżały wojska z państw sąsiednich, a szczególnie Krzyżaków (Zakon Rycerski Najświętszej Marii Panny) z północy, Czechów z południa i Litwinów ze wschodu.

Mazowsze było szczególnie narażone na najazdy litewskie, które pustoszyły zimie księstwa, aż do 1385 r. Dwukrotnie był palony Ciechanów, który był stolicą Ziemi Ciechanowskiej.

Forma zamku – prostokąt o wymiarach 48 x 57 m – z jednym budynkiem przy bramie południowej (dla załogi), dwóch wieżach od strony wjazdu i olbrzymim, pustym dziedzińcem przypominała wczesnośredniowieczne zamki z Bliskiego Wschodu – zamki bizantyjskie. Miał on podobne przeznaczenie – służył do schronienia ludności miasta, wraz z najcenniejszym dobytkiem w okresie zagrożenia przez wroga. Jedyną drogą do zamku, od strony miasta, przez bagniste rozlewiska rzeki Łydyni był drewniany most, o długości prawie 300 m., łatwy do demontażu.

Zamek ciechanowski był praktycznie nie do zdobycia i nigdy nie został zajęty przez wrogów, chociaż takie próby podejmowali Krzyżacy, czego dowodem są znalezione w fosie zamkowej, w trakcie badań archeologicznych, dwa miecze i inne fragmenty uzbrojenia rycerzy zakonnych. Zamek pełnił wówczas (na przełomie XIV i XV w.) rolę obronnego zamku granicznego, gdyż granica Państwa Krzyżackiego przebiegała wzdłuż rzeki, tuż za północnym murem zamku.

Castle of the Mazovian Dukes, Ciechanów, Poland (part 1 of 2)

When the construction of the Ciechanów castle began, and it was around 1355, Mazovia, which was a separate duchy, was ruled by Prince Siemowit III from the line of the Mazovian Piasts. In other areas of Poland, the process of unification was coming to an end, after the so-called district breakdown. It was ruled by the last hereditary king, Casimir the Great, also from the Piast line, who "found Poland made of wood and left it made of stone". Polish lands were invaded by armies from neighboring countries, especially the Teutonic Knights (the Knights' Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary) from the north, Czechs from the south and Lithuanians from the east.

Mazovia was particularly vulnerable to Lithuanian invasions, which ravaged the Duchy's lands until 1385. Ciechanów, the capital of the Ciechanów Land, was burned twice.

The form of the castle - a rectangle measuring 48 x 57 m - with one building at the southern gate (for the crew), two towers from the entrance side and a huge, empty courtyard resembled early medieval Middle Eastern castles - Byzantine castles. It had a similar purpose - it was used to shelter the city's population, along with the most valuable possessions, when threatened by the enemy. The only way to the castle, from the city side, through the swampy backwaters of the Łydynia River, was a wooden bridge, almost 300 m long, easy to dismantle.

The Ciechanów castle was practically impregnable and was never occupied by enemies, although such attempts were made by the Teutonic Knights, as evidenced by two swords and other fragments of the knights' armament found in the castle moat during archaeological research. The castle then (at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries) served as a defensive border castle, as the border of the Teutonic State ran along the river, just behind the northern wall of the castle.

3. How did you choose their name? (all of them)

Questions about Creating Your OCs.

Sit tight for another doozy.

We'll start with Ayumu and Eriko, since they're sisters (and, coincidentally, Ayumu's first name comes first alphabetically) and were the first two OCs I made. Their last name Király is a common Hungarian surname which translates to "King," a name that fits them, as they are both avid chess players. Of course, the reason their last name is Hungarian is that their father is Hungarian; and the reason that their first names are Japanese is that their mother is Japanese.

In one sense, Ayumu is named after Ayumu Kasuga, better known as Osaka, from Azumanga Daioh, always one of my favorite manga and anime. It also happens that Ayumu's and Osaka's name are written 歩, which happens to be the short form of the shōgi piece 歩兵, which translates to "foot soldier," or more commonly, "Pawn."

Eriko's name, on the other hand, just happened to be a Japanese name that I found rather pretty. I cannot think of a character from an anime or manga with that name, which may be part of the reason that I chose it.

Once again, I will speak of Giacomo Martini and Chiara Rossi together. More detail here. Both characters were developed out of a silly desire of mine to have an Italian duo named Martini & Rossi, after the famous brand of vermouth and wine (which I do quite enjoy).

Chiara's name simply came from the most popular fan name for Nyo!South Italy (or Nyo!Romano, most commonly) from Hetalia.

Giacomo's name evinces a common pattern you'll see henceforth: Biblical names. Specifically, St. Joachim, husband of St. Anne and father of Mary. Another pattern: my specific reason may just be, "It came to mind first, and it sounded good." Being able to bestow the nickname "Jack" upon him (given that he currently studies in Scotland [where they speak English, allegedly]) is a bonus; it can be a reference to my family's first pet, as well as to the playing card (and you know how much of an enthusiast I am for gambling).

Chunying Su's name probably just came from a quick lookup of common Chinese names. It helps that we can nickname her "Sue," the name of one of my favorite Fire Emblem characters.

Elizabeth Collins, of course, is named for St. Elizabeth, relative of Mary and mother of John the Baptist. Collins, I thought, would be sufficient to mark her as Irish without having to go into "Mc" or "O'" (or even "Fitz"!) territory, lel. That may still be on the cards, however.

I've always liked the name Erin, it's quite pretty. As for Staunton, that comes from Howard Staunton, one of the great chess players of the 19th century, and namesake of the Staunton chess set, which the vast majority of chess tournaments, from club to the world stage, use exclusively.

Fernando Vicente Olivares y López just sounds decently Hispanic enough. Any other names could have worked, probably, as long as they weren't Raúl. (Remember him?) On closer evaluation, Fernando Vicente probably comes straight from Vicente Fernández, the late, great Mexican musician.

Judyta Fiszer... named after Judith from the Bible, of course! As for Fischer, being named for Bobby Fischer obviously comes to mind. Perhaps I was really trying hard to go for a Jewish-sounding Polish name.

Katarina is a cute name, and is used decently enough in Norway. Håland was just the first Norwegian surname to come to mind that didn’t end in “-sen.”

Kazimieras, of course, is named for St. Casimir, patron saint of Lithuania. I believe that the surname Lukša is derived from Lukas, Lithuanian for Luke.

Kōichi is named after Inspector Zenigata from Lupin III. His last name, Uehara, like Katarina’s, was simply the first surname to come to mind.

Madeleine is named for St. Mary Magdelene, of course. I don't quite remember where Métraux comes from, but it is a common French surname (probably).

Miriam is named after the sister of Moses and Aaron. Löwenheim comes from the character of Lorens Löwenhielm from the Danish novel and film Babette's Feast. It just stuck out to me.

Peter August MacGregor sounded phonetic enough. I knew that, when I made a Scottish character, he had to be named MacGregor. Got to represent. His nickname “Wally” also rolls easily off the tongue, and is based off the Scottish slang phrase “you look peely-wally,” or “you seem unwell.”

Rafael Domingo de Guadalupe-Pérez... finally, someone named after someone in my family. Rafael was the name of my paternal great-grandfather, whose last name is my family name. Domingo, Sunday, the Lord's Day, good enough. And de Guadalupe, how much more Mexican can you get? Pérez is probably lifted straight from Sergio Pérez, the F1 driver from Mexico.

Reina María Ramos-San Martín... If you meet a young girl in the future whose first and middle names are María Reina, that's probably my kid. For some reason I want to name my daughter that. On the silliest side, if I have a son and daughter, their names will be José María and María José. (I'm mostly being tongue-in-cheek.) But, more seriously, I've always liked the name Reina. It helps that Mary is Queen of Heaven. As for Ramos, it's just a common Hispanic surname, while San Martín might be less so. I believe that Martin de Porres, the Peruvian saint whose patronage includes mixed-race people and racial harmony, as well as innkeepers and the poor, is the specific namesake.

Sara Hernández y Ortiz. Again, Sara is a cute name that I like. Hernández and Ortiz are also common Hispanic surnames.

Sayaka Asakura. Sayaka is definitely named for Sayaka Yumi, the female protagonist of Mazinger Z, one of the anime that my dad watched growing up in El Salvador. Asakura probably comes from Akio Asakura, protagonist of Wangan Midnight.

Vittoria Savio. Another name I like, Victoria. Savio comes from St. Dominic Savio, of course.

Last, but not least, Yuliya Serhiivna Bonarchuk. Yet again, Julia is a name I like. Her father is Serhii, so she will often be addressed as Yuliya Serhiivna. Now for Bonarchuk: that's the name of one of my favorite teachers in high school, who happens to have Ukrainian parents and no love for Lenin or Stalin.

Hopefully that was a fun read. It was quite fun writing this answer.

POD: December 1241 - Ögedei Khan manages to avoid drinking himself to death in a bout with Abd-ur-Rahman, and the conquest of Europe continues for another decade. 1251 - Ögedei Khan, having presided over the conquest of the northern territories of the Holy Roman Empire dies at his encampment along the English Channel. The Mongol Empire soon splinters and Batu Khan establishes the Tzarkhanate after calling a kurultai for dominion over Mongol Europe. 1253 - Start of the Polish Revolts led primarily by Casimir of Kuyavia, the heir to the Piast dynasty following the death of Duke Bolesław V. The rebellion lasts over a decade, but constant infighting from rival nobles prevents Casimir from gaining the upper hand over the Prussian and Lithuanian vassals of the Rus. 1265 - The Margraviate of Brandenburg revolts against the Khanate hoping to spark a wider German revolt, however the nobles are never able to consolidate around a leader. 1282 - Constantinople falls to a combined force of Turks who were driven out of eastern Anatolia by the Ilkhanate. The Byzantines are progressively driven back to the Peloponnese and the surrounding territories. 1319 - At Kalmar the Swedes, Norwegians, and remnants of the Danish court agree to form a personal union under Magnus IV of Sweden, largely in response to the death of Eric VI of Denmark during the Mongol conquest of Jutland. 1339 - Pope Nicholas V and Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV meet in Rome to launch the Anti-Mongol Crusade. Concurrently, King Edward III of England launches what would become the War of French Liberation (1339-1422). 1350 - The Anti-Mongol Crusade comes to an end after the humiliating defeat at Vienna. Emperor Louis IV returns to Rome and officially dissolves the Holy Roman Empire in favor of direct rule over Italy as the first of the Wittelsbach Kings. Louis and his heirs continue to claim the Duchy of Bavaria. By the middle of the 14th Century the Tzarkhanate is seen by the rest of Europe as a badly run state with an arrogant polyglot culture, unworthy to call themselves Europeans. But the fact remains that the Tzarkhanate is also the wealthiest and most powerful realm in European history, and its nobility remain surprisingly unified despite (or possibly because of) a chaotic political system. Mongol overlordship would continue until the end of the 15th century with the "Great Stand on the Volga River" leading to the establishment of a genuine monarchy centered at Moscow under the Rurik dynasty. The Wawel Royal Castle is a castle residency located in central Kraków, Poland. Built at the behest of King Casimir III the Great, it consists of a number of structures from different periods situated around the Italian-styled main courtyard.
