a photo series, 3/31/2024

I did these all by myself outside of a lovely little holiday gathering.

I am learning to love my skin again.

I held on to these for so long because I kept wanting it to be an intimate moment between myself and … myself… 😂 but I am ready to share.

and yeah .. I look pretty conventionally unconventionally …

and most days, I’m grateful for my mothers fine angles, full cheeks, and abundant lips. (despite her .. difficult attributes and personal struggle that spans through time and space to echo through me from birth to now …)

but deeply, I SEE A HAPPY HUMAN AGAIN. I see a healing human. I see a CHANGE EMBRACING powerhouse of fucking stamina and grace. I see a body excessively scarred but solid, strong, disciplined, determined, and resilient … and so so so so soft at the same time.

When I think about the methods they used to bring my little soul back to this body .. again and again… the shiver is molecular.

(supposedly)

a human being’s most inherit trait: the will to stay alive

I’ve betrayed this body by brutalizing it for every mistake, for every whisper of my mother or father’s voice, for every previous misstep, and every challenged choice, for every emotional explosion, for every mentally ill moment of grief and pain and sorrow and FEAR…x10000000 times over… and all it’s done … is keep me alive!

I see ME…CLEARLY for the first time … in a long time.

I know I have so much… wreckage from my past to wade through… but I look forward to it now. With these clearer eyes… maybe I can repurpose the absolute TAR into creativity.

i forgot to write this down when i first heard about it so now the details are fuzzy (and honestly it was never going to be as funny/wild to any of you as it was to me), but for some reason i was just reminded of it, so. have this Familial Anecdote:

my dad and i were talking the other day about driving to maine,¹ iirc because Baby Sister had sent us a zillow listing for a cottage there,² and in the course of this conversation it came out that, in a turn of events i had somehow never heard about in literal decades of Dad Stories, he and my mother had apparently decided at some point in their unrecognizably spontaneous youth to Drive to Maine because they were 'already close,'³ and because this was in, like, the eighties, i.e. a time before google maps, they wildly underestimated the time this trip was going to take and got there at, like, two in the morning… but as it turned out this wasn't actually a problem because, as it so happens, the l.l. bean store stays open. fucking. 24 hours a day.⁴ so it all worked out fine in the end: they still got to go shopping!⁵

⸻ ¹ not 'talking about' as in 'actually planning to,' to be clear, just 'talking about' as in 'discussing what it's like to.' ² Baby Sister likes to windowshop zillow listings in her spare time, it's a whole Thing. i hear she's not alone in this tho. ³ narrator: they were not, in fact, close… i forget exactly where he said they were starting from, but i think it was, like, boston-ish. lol. lmao. &c. ⁴ you may have already been aware of this fact and thus be totally unfazed by this anecdote but for me it was like. double whammy of absolutely unrecognizable parental behavior, topped off with place i would possibly least expect to be open around the clock???? (also now i am envisioning a like. mixed-up files remix where they're hiding out in an REI or something. eating the tinned provisions and sleeping in the tents.) ⁵ what, if anything, was actually purchased on this occasion is outside the scope of this narrative.

SO deeply out of character for any parents i ever knew)#(tbh i suspect all the carefree spontaneity got burnt out of them by my dad's years-long stretch of unemployment when i was first born)#(and after that it was like. thank god we've clawed our way back to solvency. nothing can be done from now on without a contingency plan.)#(which is like. really sad actually. but i like the idea of them‚ two young things who hadn't ruined each other yet‚ driving to maine!)

hiii i can finally post this wizard scene i was thinking about,,

wizard wilbur is kind of awkward with social cues since he's avoided by most people who don't understand magic therefore fearing it, and he stays shut in his castle, the most social interaction he gets is occasionally coaching younger apprentices. dream figures out about his lack of social cues for the first time when he is over at the castle while wilbur is trying to create a plant with magic that will grow to be the color of dreams eyes (greenish with a hazel brown center). he calls dream over intending to get a better look at his eyes, but he doesn't mention this, and when dream walks up to him wilbur holds his face with both hands to get him closer to look up and directly into his own eyes. it startles dream for a moment but they make silent eye contact for a couple seconds until wilbur lets go and immediately focuses back on his project smiling and saying "great, thanks!!" dream stands in the same spot for a moment trying to process what just happened (still no explanation from wil) and he just starts giggling unable to think about anything but how close their faces just were

#wilbur is actually quite good socially in the way that he's very personable and well spoken #but there are little things dream picks up on the more he spends time with wil #that most people dream is familiar with would consider strange or impolite #but other than maybe being startled for a second dream doesn't mind it at all #dream has only been around uptight and distant people in his home life so he adores wilburs carefree whimsy #ghibli au rambles #<- same tag as on my main blog (btw check that out if you're curious about the context to this au)
