The way spn tried to pass off chronically sidelining Mary's character as her being independent and then made that her character flaw is very silly actually.

you know the thing spn loves to do where the monster of the week or recurring characters will mirror issues relevant to the winchesters, to help put perspective on them? for a while, most of those were about reflecting sam and dean's current issues, but i feel like after a while a lot of them started to be about their past ones? like, by the time michael and lucifer hit the scene, they're mirroring tensions from sam and dean that were more relevant preseries, or in seasons 1 and 2, than in season 5 — they ARE the problem in season 5, but they are parallels for issues the winchesters have already mostly worked through. raphael arguably is a similar thing, mirroring some of dean's struggles from season 2 ("dad is dead and that's rough but ok, but my brother is gone and i'm alone and that Cannot Stand"), but that aren't really what dean is dealing with anymore by s6 (the "brother was gone" issue was relevant, but debatably less so than it was in ahbl 1 & 2).
in some ways that's cool because the past is never really the past when it comes to major traumas and conflicts, but also it kind of deteriorates some of the tension because we already know what sam and dean did and the emotional arcs and characterization that came out of their situations. "is michael going to choose peace with lucifer over being the good son to an absent father?" is an interesting question but it's maybe a more interesting question if we're also wondering that about dean at the same time, while dean is also struggling with michael causing problems in his life

Dean really did threaten kaia with a gun, huh? basically kidnapping her, even though dreamwalking endangers her.
And jack is in the back seat telling her it's all fine with and that they'll help her with her powers, which, no wonder, considering he's been threatened with weapons/I'll kill you speeches since he was born.
Dean in this episode is so messed up (which i know is coming from somewhere, it's due to guilt over thinking his mom was dead and not looking for her, which could have made a neat S8 parallel if they'd done something with it other than this), and meanwhile Sam enables it and it's all ... very messy.

SPOILERS FOR VOLUME 9. Upon a rewatch of V9E3 I noticed a detail that didn't sit right with me. Again, spoilers
Tumblr media
Look at the chess peice on the side, Weiss just cut a sentient being in half. Those things didn't die when the Red Prince took them out at the start of the game and Weiss just up and kills this one and who knows what other peices got killed. I know this episode came out just yesterday (as of when i made this ask) but why is team RWBY so nonchalant about these living beings murder? First those two royal guards getting beheaded then this
I am so sorry I am so behind on..... a lot of asks (don't ask just don't ask know I live in shame and have convinced myself I will get to them all eventually)
Ahem but yea I kind of did notice that one while watching and it did not wind up in my quick review because life lolz but yea it did not sit well with me and continues on the theme of RWBY only cares about saving people when it is convenient to them. If they want to call themselves heroes though......they really can't right now.
Hero's would be trying to find the people they saw fell into the same place they did. Hero's would be horrified and try to stop a ruler from beheading their subjects. Hero's wouldn't leave someone to die. Hero's would do everything in their power to not kill people when possible. But the mains haven't done any of those things in....a very long time.
Seeing them callously potentially kill a sentient being, one's they had no problem taking out non violently earlier, and not deal with that at all just really doesn't sit right with me, especially after a volume where they committed treason over James not thinking he could save everyone and just trying to flee. The show wants me to feel bad for Ruby and her emotional trauma when she A. forcibly injected herself into the war into the first place and B. Refused to show the same care for James's emotional trauma's. I'd argue this disregard for peoples lives started back in volume 6 when Weiss tossed the two guards out of the plane into the Ocean that was implies to be very far out wherein most people couldn't swim back to shore. It's supposed to be comedic but....it feels too dark to be comedic when you stop and think about it.
I just do not understand these choices in the writing to have the mains only sometimes care about civilians lives besides laziness. These choices just feel lazy and is just the writers trying to get from point A to point B without caring if the choices make sense for the characters or setting. I know a lot of people have said Episode 3 has been the best so far of the season but with all of these moments that happened I really cannot agree with that personally.

It's just that. Chuck lies. ALL the time. The writers use him to retcon things, but he also just simply can't be trusted at his word. He's an unreliable narrator.

s14 is good because Michael keeps asking "what do you want?" and then twists everything to his liking, it is good because Michael!Dean is hot and you can't convince me otherwise, it is bad because its so slow paced you fall asleep, it is bad because they didn't know what to do with the generic au hunters and so they simply had Michael kill them off, it is good because heaven and the empty fight over who gets jack and it makes sense, it is bad because some problems are solved way too quickly while others drag on for way too long, it is good because they abandoned the "wayward sisters" plotline, it is bad because there is no logical reason Nick should be alive but it is good because his struggle after possession is fine and interesting, it is good because it has the right balance between funny and interesting and sad episodes since s11 but bad because some of it seems like a sitcom, it is good because in order to be a saviour Jack has to go through his own "evil" period but bad because they didn't have him talk to Sam but to Donatello about the soulless experience, it is good because Mary had to go in order for the show to go on but bad because they were too afraid to make Jack go all the way evil for him to kill her and made it seem like an accident, it is bad because they could never decide if Dean loved or liked Jack or if he didn't, and good because sometimes you can't decide if you like someone and the found family trope doesn't work for everyone, it is good because Dean's hearts desire was having his family together since s1 and bad because the episode was a 40 minute long cry feast, it is good because the last 4min "god was never on your side" finale kicked ass and bad because it led to the trainwreck that were the first 3 episodes of s15.....

I want to like Gabriel's scene with Lucifer in 13x22 bc he's right obviously but all I can think of is how much more interesting that scene and dialogue could've been if Lucifer were characterized like he was in season 5.

personally i never really liked the aspect of the johnmary dynamic that has them as poorly matched and coupled only for vessel breeding purposes...it made sense to me that they would have liked each other and been intense about each other without external intervention, just for character reasons. idk if they would have been great together decades down the line if they’d had the chance, but it doesn’t super matter to me because they never did get the chance; and just because they needed to be matched up in order to produce dean and sam doesn’t need to mean they’d be bad for each other necessarily, or that they would have needed to be cupid-manipulated in order to like each other. but having john know about hunting prior to mary’s death ruins what would have been a large part of mary’s fixation on him so like regardless of how organic you prefer to think of their relationship origin story this does kind of fuck it up :p

I've figured out where my curmudgeonliness about season 7 comes from
Because the two thirds of the season are pretty decent but there's a point at which it starts to tip toward making me physically role my eyes at the screen, and that feeling was the one that stuck strongest in my memory

It's honestly wild to me that ToA went through so much trouble to emphasize the fact that Will did not magically fix all of Nico's problems and was explicitly not Nico's only doctor.
Only for TSATS to have Will fix all of Nico's problems and have Nico be entirely reliant on him the entire book and literally helpless without him and LITERALLY have Nico's problems be magically removed.
#pjo#riordanverse#tsats crit#nico di angelo#solangelo#it doesnt make any sense too cause. in HoO we KNOW Nico was fully capable of handling himself in Tartarus#we already knew he was explicitly on his own. we know he had it worse than Percy and Annabeth did#because we are explicitly told that Nico saw Tartarus' true nature the ENTIRE TIME versus Percy only getting a tiny half-glimpse of it once#and Percy acknowledges that he would not be able to withstand actually seeing Tartarus more than he did without just dying on the spot#and Nico was down there for as long as Percy and Annabeth at least. on his own. flying blind and explicitly having it worse.#so it doesnt make sense to totally retcon Nico's ENTIRE experiences with Tartarus to make him sopping wet and pathetic about it#needing to be helped and only being down there for twenty minutes and crying the whole time#and then all of the book he's literally functionally helpless without Will for some reason. despite being in his element.#could not get more in his element than being in the Underworld. my guy literally lives there. that's his HOUSE. that's his YARD.#and he's still just totally sopping wet and pathetic in Tartarus the second time around#like im sorry. no. we literally have previously established canon indicating this is absolutely not the case#that is not something you can retcon. that is an entire major event. it was not glossed over.#unless you are doing time travel and it's a canonical retcon a la Homestuck im sorry the events of TSATS just could never occur#(not to mention Damasen is just never acknowledged in TSATS and him and Bob were absorbed by Tartarus the god and ergo dead in HoH)#(so Bob and Damasen are like. *Gone* gone. they didn't just die to be reformed later they got ERASED.)#(and Nyx sure as hell isnt gonna be the one to have Bob trapped for whatever reason. definitely not cause she hates light/change/whatever)#(nyx is literally the mother/sister [depends on version - sometimes a mitosis situation] of the personification of day? and sky?)#(and FRIENDSHIP? and the nymphs of sunset? sometimes also CHEERFULNESS? and THOUGHTFULNESS? and old age)#(ah yes the mother of concepts such as love/friendship and aging and. day. would HATE [checks notes] love/friendship changing and light)#(she INVENTED THOSE) < anyways thank u for coming to my aside rant in the tags#in parenthesis to indicate this is an aside/tangent rant. anyways i have so many problems with this plot. it just DOESNT WORK#on NO LEVEL DOES IT WORK AT ALL WITH ESTABLISHED CANON

maybe controversial opinion. idk. but i don’t understand people who complain about evo in the traffic series and say it “should stay fanon and not canon”. because uh. it is canon. it’s been canon since i believe last life. martyn has canonized it to his character for multiple seasons now. evo/watchers isn’t fanon or semi-canon, it’s straight up heavily important to martyn’s lore and character
