"In cities across the country, people of color, many of them low income, live in neighborhoods criss-crossed by major thoroughfares and highways.

The housing there is often cheaper — it’s not considered particularly desirable to wake up amid traffic fumes and fall asleep to the rumble of vehicles over asphalt.

But the price of living there is steep: Exhaust from all those cars and trucks leads to higher rates of childhood asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and pulmonary ailments. Many people die younger than they otherwise would have, and the medical costs and time lost to illness contributes to their poverty.

Imagine if none of those cars and trucks emitted any fumes at all, running instead on an electric charge. That would make a staggering difference in the trajectory, quality, and length of millions of lives, particularly those of young people growing up near freeways and other sources of air pollution, according to a study from the American Lung Association.

The study, released [February 28, 2024], found that a widespread transition to EVs could avoid nearly 3 million asthma attacks and hundreds of infant deaths, in addition to millions of lower and upper respiratory ailments...

Prior research by the American Lung Association found that 120 million people in the U.S. breathe unhealthy air daily, and 72 million live near a major trucking route — though, Barret added, there’s no safe threshold for air pollution. It affects everyone.

Bipartisan efforts to strengthen clean air standards have already made a difference across the country. In California, which, under the Clean Air Act, can set state rules stronger than national standards, 100 percent of new cars sold there must be zero emission by 2035.

[Note: The article doesn't explain this, but that is actually a much bigger deal than just California. Basically, due to historically extra terrible pollution, California is the only state that's allowed to allowed to set stronger emissions rules than the US government sets. However, one of the rules in the Clean Air Act is that any other state can choose to follow California's standards instead of the US government's. And California by itself is the world's fifth largest economy - ahead of all but four countries. So, between those two things, when California sets stricter standards for cars, they effects ripple outward massively, far beyond the state's borders.]

Truck manufacturers are, according to the state’s Air Resources Board, already exceeding anticipated zero-emissions truck sales, putting them two years ahead of schedule...

Other states have begun to take action, too, often reaching across partisan lines to do so. Maryland, Colorado, New Mexico, and Rhode Island adopted zero-emissions standards as of the end of 2023.

The Biden administration is taking similar steps, though it has slowed its progress after automakers and United Auto Workers pressured the administration to relax some of its more stringent EV transition requirements.

While Barret finds efforts to support the electrification of passenger vehicles exciting, he said the greatest culprits are diesel trucks. “These are 5 to 10 percent of the vehicles on the road, but they’re generating the majority of smog-forming emissions of ozone and nitrogen,” Barret said...

Lately, there’s been significant progress on truck decarbonization. The Biden administration has made promises to ensure that 30 percent of all big rigs sold are electric by 2030...

Such measures, combined with an increase in public EV charging stations, vehicle tax credits, and other incentives, could change American highways, not to mention health, for good."

I have never, ever, had an October/birthday month this good ever before. It's surreal

#final booklet (graphic design gig) sent off to printing company. the final paper quality is beautiful :O #7 days till island visit + work event. 2 days till celebrating that I made it to 31 #money changer visit: check #telling dad to gtfo of my space and that I'm hanging out with his actually understanding cousin 4000 miles away over Halloween #no pain in my body. as a person in remission (I am SO glad it wasn't brain cancer)#and the company of kind. extraordinary. intelligent. supportive friends and shared love for stories and lore #the world is opening up. there are plans for next year. I can breathe and immensely hope #and I'll take Hunter...the world of the Owl House..and the connections it brought..along with me #loz says stuff

what's got you in a funk? (don't answer if u don't wanna)

well you sent this before i posted anything about my cat but i guess those posts clarify a bit. i was already in a funk for no particular reason (maybe seasonal) but recently kiwi started showing some signs of her condition deteriorating. i was trying to take it day by day and not assume the worst but part of me knew this was coming and i was preparing myself

#she was a bit restless and not eating very well. and occasionally she would try to get my attention like she needed something #she'd also lost some weight and was weaker/less steady #but last night she came up to me while i was in bed and her pupils were different sizes #so i knew the cancer had probably spread and she was having neurological symptoms #i didn't want her to suffer through confusion and seizures and all of that awful stuff. her quality of life would've been poor #i saw it before with my first cat (mango) because she had heartworms that migrated to her brain. i was so young then #anyways this was probably more than you were asking for but. just getting it off my chest i guess #and like. trying to reassure myself that i did the right thing

it is so silly when ppl are like “transitioning as an adult should be restricted/illegal because it’s not medically necessary and the results are permanent!” bc like… we do so many things in modern medicine that aren’t strictly necessary & have permanent outcomes and yet… we do them.

my mom went in for a voluntary corrective knee surgery to remove part of her knee. my dad didn’t need to have his stomach removed, he chose to do that. there’s a content creator called footlessjo who chose to have a below the knee amputation. people everywhere ask their doctors for gastric sleeve surgeries, or corrective eye surgery. not to mention almost of these surgeries have a higher regret rate than transitioning.

if we only did medical procedures or treatments when people were dying the quality of life for everyone would go down. if we trust other adults to make permanent decisions regarding things like whether they should keep an organ or a limb, then there’s no reason not to trust trans people who want to medically transition.

My family went to florida and I’ve been dog and house sitting and hosting my brother for two weeks and taking my cat to the vet and finally my brother is gone and the cat is okay* and I have 24 hours until my doctor appointment and 48 until the family is back and I’m chugging beers sitting back trying to fit two weeks of relaxation into one evening and it’s not working but I’m tipsy and throwing my head back and wanting to make bad choices yeeeaaaaaah boooooooiiiii!!!!

#this was my chance to relax then my brother decided to come #which is fine but basically it means he works in the house and then I make him dinner or we go out to eat rinse and repeat for 14 days #he also Has To Eat Three Squates A Day or gets hangry and I’m more of a…one meal a day person #i feel so bloated and crappy so the beer isn’t sitting well but I want to relax and I don’t really drink anymore so #not excited for the dr tomorrow but whatever #*cat is as good as she can be. I’m coming to terms with the fact that she will not ever get better. she’s old and it might be cancer but #anything we do is just treating symptoms #she has a depressed immune system and is getting monthly chronic utis. i need ti be Frank with her quality of life #this is so much harder to confront than her amputation. i Leah’s thought she would just…get old and slow down gracefully #but she feels young. and in between the uti pain she seems normal. but so much of her life now is sleeping and crying in pain #she also has sores on her feet. vets not sure why but thinks it’s immune system related #aaaaa. i want to call my science teacher and talk to him #he gave me Chloe sophomore year but I think I’ll cry #oof I want to talk to anyone really but I don’t have those type of relationships. so I shall talk in tags and drink beer.

Just saw a post where one of the tags was "gluten free people are worse than vegans" and I am here blinking like... what's next, "people with peanut allergy are annoying"? Like sorry for not sucking it up and then going through physical and psychological discomfort by eating wheat because I get an autoimmune response, but I'd rather have people think I am annoying (which is big for me) than go through that again.

#and I am one of the lucky ones #my symptoms are all skin related with some mild brain stuff on the side #and I can eat spelt #and a tiny quantity of contamination will not give me a full episode #I read of people who got sick throwing up and with immense pain for a weel by being contaminated ONCE #gluten intolerance depending on how severe it is can wreck your intestines incredibly bad #like if you are gluten intolerant and keep having gluten apparently you are way more likely to get intestine cancer #like do you seriously think I would not choose to have pizza given the chance #I miss eating at a bakery holy shit but it's not worth it #I still have scarring from eating wheat because I didn't realize I developed an allergy #which by the way a lot of people develop in their late twenties/early thirties #also I WISH we were as vocal as vegans cause vegan products on the market started getting more numerous ever since they got more vocal #while I find wheat in rice and fish that wouldn't need any wheat #and gluten free products are triple the price for one third of the quantity and horrible quality - as in they are often stale #imagine paying eight euros for eight slices of toast and then the toast sucks #now imagine if you are minimum wage and have the stroke of luck of heing full celiac so you don't have an alternative option #you get the message that most food is not for you and society would rather see you starve than use corn starch as a thickener instead #i need to find a tag for personal updates
