kyman headcanon #1
Cartman fell first, Kyle fell harder
Basically Cartman's subconsciously hadda crush on Kyle since they was like nine or so. An open secret throughout classmates and the town in general. He's more comfortable and public about ts as we've seen in the panderverse special, s16 ep7, and tho not kyman specific-- sometimes in the earlier szns Cart'd drop an "i love you guys" to be met with a 😐 from the other three. But yea slower buildup to the realization until it's gone way too far to back out
Kyle can't help knowin that. He choose to gaslight himself to avoid confrontin his feelings on the matter. Won't acknowledge any connotations. Only thin Cartman-related he'll dwell on is 'omfg i hate that guy'. Obvious hints is ignored straight after being picked up. When he finally does grasp the fact they both gay for eachother, Kyle has a whole fifth life crisis
Issa long process; and despite his own impatience, Cartman'll wait years if thats what it takes

Thinking about Jerry since @crushednugget raised this point in their Leonie analysis
Leonie’s thinks being a mercenary is all about fighting for the ones who cannot or “can’t protect themselves”.
This answer is... very far from the typical mercenary mindset and instead sounds like what a knight would say.
Which either means :
There are no knights in the Alliance? At least in the Faerghus/CoS way of being a knight (idk if Adrestia has knights but tbf, I doubt so they maybe have people named knights who don’t do anything...) so Leonie cannot be “a knight” and instead wants to be a “mercenary” who acts as a knight.
Leonie doesn’t know (logic since the support revealing everything is the Lorenz one in the Post TS) Jeralt didn’t come to protect her village from bandits because he personnally wanted to protect the poor people of Sauin village, nope.
Jeralt did so because he had been paid by Count Gloucester (the supposed evil-incarnate greedy noble from the Alliance).
But in CF, with her “a mercenary has to be thoughtless”?
How can a mercerary fight for “those who can’t protect themselves” if they are only a tool?
Given how this piece of advice was given by “Jeralt <3″, did Jerry himself decide to drop the “fight for those who can’t protect themselves” and only became a heartless and thoughtless mercenary interested in gold - to spend in pubs?
Jerry and Billy were supposed to mirror Greil’n’Ike and their background as mercenaries, but it was a running joke in FE9 that the Greil Mercenaries were always broke because Greil didn’t accept every mission - he decided what to accept, and most likely refused a lot of offers.
If the Jerry Mercenaries are “thoughtless”, does it mean they accept every kind of mission? No matter how stinky it is, as long as it brings gold?
And then, you have Alois exclaiming :
Of course not! We knights serve as the sword and shield of Saint Seiros herself.
We pride ourselves on our integrity! We reject all rewards that are not perfectly legitimate!
Who cares about the reward? We're trying to protect the people!
So while part of this demonstrates how CF!Leonie throws her morals and aspirations by the window - it also shows how Jeralt, as revealed in CF, was very, very far from the Greil mentor a lot of people thought he was.
Maybe he had been someone who could have been looked up to (even so given his first encounter with Alois and his games I doubt so) when he was a knight, but as a mercenary?
He was on the Beowulf tier, without the “hots for Lachesis” angle.

"The administration has already begun to implement some policies along these lines, according to current and former officials as well as experts, particularly with regard to testing.
"That this approach is even being discussed in the White House is drawing concern from experts inside and outside the government who note that a herd immunity strategy could lead to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lost American lives.
..."Atlas has argued both internally and in public that an increased case count will move the nation more quickly to herd immunity and won’t lead to more deaths if the vulnerable are protected. But infectious-disease experts strongly dispute that, noting that more than 25,000 people younger than 65 have died of the virus in the United States. In addition, the United States has a larger number of vulnerable people of all ages because of high rates of heart and lung disease and obesity, and millions of at-risk people live outside nursing homes — many in households with children, whom Atlas believes should return to school in person.
..."The White House has left many of the day-to-day decisions regarding the pandemic to governors and local officials, many of whom have disregarded [t]rump’s advice, making it unclear how many states would embrace the Swedish model, or elements of it, if [trump] began to aggressively push for it.
"But two senior administration officials and one former official, as well as medical experts, noted that the administration is already taking steps to move the country in that direction. The officials, like others interviewed for this report, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.
"The Department of Health and Human Services, for instance, invoked the Defense Production Act in August to expedite the shipment of tests to nursing homes — but the administration has not significantly ramped up spending on testing elsewhere, despite persistent shortages. [t]rump and top White House aides, including Atlas, have repeatedly pushed to reopen schools and lift lockdown orders, despite outbreaks in several schools that attempted to resume in-person classes.
..."Atlas meets with [t]rump almost every day, far more than any other health official, and inside the White House he is viewed as aligned with [trump] and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on how to handle the outbreak, according to three senior administration officials.
..."In the United States, with a population of 328 million, reaching a 65 percent threshold for herd immunity may require 2.13 million deaths, assuming the virus has a 1 percent fatality rate, according to an analysis by The Post.
"It also remains unclear whether people who recover from covid-19 have long-term immunity to the virus or can be reinfected, and scientists are still learning who is vulnerable to the disease. And from a practical standpoint, it is nearly impossible to sufficiently isolate people most at risk of dying of covid-19 from the healthier population, according to public health experts."

Queer Theory Song Analysis: ‘Cold As You’ by Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
I’ve been contemplating how to approach this song for a few days because on the surface, it is a pretty straight forward entry in the TS queer song canon due to its gender-neutral pronoun usage. As such, I wanted to take a deeper look into some of the motifs of the song to see what gems we can mine.
As with much of Taylor’s early work, the narrative of this song is existing mostly inside the narrator’s head; and while the nature of the relationship at the center of this song is not explicitly defined, we are given clues as to how it made the narrator feel, which in some ways might be more truthful than what objectively transpired.
Unlike other early TS songs, where the narrator is the character doing the thinking / feeling, and the ‘he’ or ‘you’ is the object of these feelings but not an actor in their own right, this song does attribute some agency to the ‘you’ character; they take, they do what they want, they walk way, they never say.
But these actions and motivations are all alleged or imagined by the narrator, rather than documented or remembered.
This is not to say that these characters did not interact in real life, or that the narrator’s feelings are not valid; but rather to suggest that this song represents more of an existential breakdown than a real life break up.
Unrequited love is, of course, a trope in normative pop culture; and Taylor’s songs perfectly capture the sometimes-exhilarating, often-painful experiences of teenage desire, regardless of its subject or object.
But longing is also a prominent feature of queer culture, and a fixture of the queer experience, particularly when you consider the added layers of complexity it has over cishet longing – namely, heteronormativity and the lack of examples of queer relationships to role model; societal and internalized homophobia and the very real danger that can be its end result; and the mere fact that only a minority of the population identify as queer, which means that, statistically, a lot of queer peoples’ crushes will be on straight people, and that the odds of rejection will always be high.
That the narrator longs for, and feels rejected by, ‘you’ is clear within the context of this song; the narrator is not what ‘you’ wanted; is waiting for words that ‘you’ will never say; is counting all the scars ‘you’ left on her heart.
However, it remains open question as to whether ‘you’ is actually aware of the narrator’s feelings – and whether ‘you’ is even aware of the narrator, as a romantic possibility, at all.
Of course, it is an inherent fact of queer longing that the person who has caught your eye may be incapable of noticing you back. But it can be uniquely painful and isolating when the person you are pining for is a friend, who knows you deeply, and who clicks with you on every level, and who loves you completely – but platonically.
This simultaneous visibility and inability can make for a deeply personal form of rejection -- at least a rejection would mean that you had been a contender -- which can leave the person whose feelings are unrequited feeling invisible, and magnificently cursed.
[Verse 1]
You have a way of coming easily to me
And when you take, you take the very best of me
So I start a fight cause I need to feel something
And you do what you want 'cause I'm not what you wanted
[Chorus]
Oh, what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day
Just walk away, no use defending words that you will never say
And now that I'm sitting here thinking it through
I've never been anywhere cold as you
[Verse 2]
You put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray
And I stood there loving you and wished them all away
And you come away with a great little story
Of a mess of a dreamer with the nerve to adore you
[Chorus]
Oh, what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day
Just walk away, no use defending words that you will never say
And now that I'm sitting here thinking it through
I've never been anywhere cold as you
[Bridge]
You never did give a damn thing, honey, but I cried, cried for you
And I know you wouldn't have told nobody if I died, died for you
(Died for you)
[Chorus]
Oh, what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day
Every smile you fake is so condescending
Counting all the scars you made
And now that I'm sitting here thinking it through
I've never been anywhere cold as you

Battle over mail-in voting could leave both parties with doubts about results in November | WPMI
WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — President Donald Trump again accused Democrats of trying to “steal” the November election Monday as Democrats continued to question his willingness to abide by the results, and new polls suggest the public is growing increasingly concerned about the security of the process and the credibility of the outcome as Election Day draws nearer.
“In an illegal late night coup, Nevada’s clubhouse Governor made it impossible for Republicans to win the state,” Trump tweeted Monday morning. “Post Office could never handle the Traffic of Mail-In Votes without preparation. Using Covid to steal the state.”
A bill approved in a special legislative session over the weekend would empower Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak to direct the secretary of state to send mail-in ballots to all active voters. Seven other states are already planning to do the same, despite objections by the president and some Republicans.
President Trump’s latest complaint about states shifting toward voting by mail due to the spread of the coronavirus came days after he floated the possibility of delaying November’s election entirely. He backed off that suggestion after bipartisan backlash, but he continues to predict it will be “the greatest election disaster in history.”
The pandemic has already presented unprecedented challenges in the primaries, bringing a massive surge in demand for absentee ballots, a shortage of volunteers willing to work at polling sites, and long delays in tabulating results. Voters in Georgia waited in lines for hours to cast votes in person, more than 20,000 ballots submitted by mail were rejected in Wisconsin, and New York election officials have taken over a month to determine who won some races.
“It is irresponsible for political officials to suggest that the United States cannot conduct a valid and legitimate election during a pandemic,” said Elizabeth Bennion, founding director of the American Democracy Project at Indiana University South Bend. “At the same time, it would be irresponsible to assume that it should be business as usual.”
In three months, state election systems will be tested again, with many more ballots and much higher stakes. Election officials are racing to rectify errors, establish safeguards, and prepare for an expected onslaught of early voting and absentee ballots as Americans aim to avoid gathering at crowded polling locations on Election Day, and some say the president’s rhetoric is not helping.
"I think it really shatters peoples' confidence in the process," Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman, a Republican, said in an interview with NPR Saturday. "We need to make sure we're inspiring confidence in the public that this is a fair election. And the way you do that is balancing access and security."
While some election integrity experts appear confident states will be able to resolve the problems that emerged in the primaries and hold safe and secure elections in November, voters do not share that faith in the process. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Friday found a majority of Americans are afraid the 2020 election will not be fair.
About half of respondents, including 80% of Republicans, echoed the president’s complaints that increased use of absentee ballots would result in widespread fraud. In addition, about three-quarters of registered voters expressed concerns about voter suppression and “organized voter fraud by political actors.”
Still, 67% of voters said they expected their ballot would be counted accurately if they voted by mail, including six out of 10 Republicans. GOP voters were twice as likely as Democrats to worry ineligible people would cast ballots, but even 40% of Democrats believe voter fraud is a widespread problem.
A Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll released last week showed 70% of voters support having a mail-in ballot option, but 78% are concerned about vote tampering. About 80% of respondents opposed the practice of ballot harvesting, in which partisan groups can collect mail-in ballots door-to-door and submit them in bulk in some states, and 60% worried ballots would erroneously be sent to people who have died or moved away.
“The new normal of questioning legitimacy for the candidates has now been extended to the process of selecting a winner,” said Michael Cohen, CEO of the Cohen Research Group. “This is far worse. It solidifies political polarization and gives reason to those who opt-out of democracy that it’s all rigged, anyway.”
Republicans and Democrats are locked in litigation in 18 states over attempts to expand access to absentee ballots in light of the pandemic. Democrats maintain anyone who wants to vote by mail to protect their health should be allowed to do so, but the Trump campaign and its allies insist blindly sending ballots to all registered voters will result in rampant fraud.
Though election security experts say mail-in ballots are somewhat more susceptible to fraud than voting in person, states have protocols in place to mitigate those risks and there is no evidence any kind of voting fraud is common. That is why many have called for the federal government to provide more money to states for election administration to ensure they have the resources to distribute, collect, and count votes accurately.
House Democrats approved billions of dollars to assist states with vote-by-mail in the HEROES Act in May, but a Senate Republican stimulus proposal released last week included no such funding. Election funding is just one of many contentious issues Democratic leaders and the White House are trying to hammer out a compromise on this week, and there is no guarantee additional money is coming for elections.
At least 16 states have made changes to voting procedures because of the pandemic, and 77% of all voters will now have the option of voting by mail without an excuse beyond fear of the coronavirus, according to a Washington Post analysis. Only eight states will require voters to provide a reason besides the pandemic to obtain absentee ballots, and none of those are likely to be decisive states in the presidential election.
Still, election night will likely look a lot different this year than in past cycles because of the reduction in in-person voting, and experts say the media and political leaders should be preparing the public for days or weeks of uncertainty. Barring an overwhelming victory by Trump or Biden, several key states could be too close to call on Nov. 3, with millions of mailed ballots not yet counted or still in transit from voters.
“It seems likely that people who disagree with the outcome of the election will question the integrity of the process, especially if they are primed and prompted to do so by candidates, campaigns, and opinion leaders,” Bennion said. “This is why it is important for politicians and election administrators on both sides of the aisle to promote voter access and ballot security.”
Leaders and pundits have instead, at times, stoked voters’ fears about this scenario. According to The Washington Post, President Trump has attacked the integrity of voting by mail more than 70 times since March, often with little or no evidence to support his claims, and undermining his party’s efforts to encourage supporters to use absentee ballots in the process.
“I want to have the election. But I also don't want to have to wait for three months and then find out that the ballots are all missing and the election doesn't mean anything,” Trump said at a press briefing last week. “That's what's going to happen. That's common sense, and everyone knows it.”
As Trump wavers on whether he would trust the results, top Democrats have voiced concerns he might rig the election or somehow refuse to leave office if Biden won. House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., suggested Sunday the president does not support “fair and unfettered elections.”
“I believe that he plans to install himself in some kind of emergency way to continue to hold on to office. And that is why the American people had better wake up,” Clyburn said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Appearing on the same CNN program, former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams—who has often alleged the 2018 election she lost was stolen from her due to Republican voter suppression—warned President Trump is “doing his best to undermine our confidence in the process.” She also accused him of trying to weaken the Postal Service at a time when reliable mail service will be integral to ensuring a fair election.
Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., tweeted Monday that Republicans would “lie, cheat and steal to stay in power.” Her comments highlighted reports that new Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s efforts to slow down mail delivery in the name of cost-cutting could prevent voters from receiving and submitting ballots on time.
“Trump put Postmaster DeJoy in charge of the postal service to dismantle the USPS & sabotage vote by mail. New procedures are causing massive delays,” Waters said.
None of this is going to give partisans in either party much reason to believe their candidate truly lost once all the votes are counted. Cohen predicted a disputed election is “a near-certainty” at this point, and he cautioned that chipping away at the foundations of democracy, even if lawmakers see valid cause for concern, could weaken the nation in the long run.
“Leaders should be dialing down the rhetoric for members of their political tribes so there is confidence in the process, and so, if they win, they can be viewed as legitimate,” Cohen said. “Putin and Xi are rooting for Trump and Biden to fail on this.”
Foreign interference is another potential complication. William Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, warned in a statement last week that foreign adversaries are “seeking to compromise the private communications of U.S. political campaigns, candidates and other political targets,” as well as attacking state and federal election infrastructure.
Evanina also accused China, Russia, and Iran of using social and traditional media to spread disinformation and undermine confidence in elections.
“As Americans, we are all in this together; our elections should be our own,” he said. “Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy. Neutralizing these threats requires not just a whole-of-government approach, but a whole-of-nation effort.”
These are not new problems. President Trump has governed for three-and-a-half years under a cloud of liberal suspicion over Russia’s role in the 2016 election, and some Democrats still openly claim his election was illegitimate. Trump was among those suggesting the same about his predecessor based on false allegations that President Barack Obama was born in Kenya.
Many Democrats still harbor resentment and doubt over the outcome of the 2000 election, in which the Republican majority on the Supreme Court halted a recount of votes in Florida, allowing President George W. Bush to declare victory. President Bill Clinton faced legitimacy questions, as well, after winning the 1992 election with only 43% of the popular vote.
If the 2020 election is close, experts foresee lawsuits, protests, and massive media campaigns waged by both parties intended to convince the American people they won before all the votes are counted and the results are certified. If the litigation reaches the Supreme Court and two Trump-appointed justices—including one who secured his seat only because Republicans refused to consider President Obama’s nominee in 2016—cast deciding votes that afford him another term, the outrage from the left would be deafening.
No matter who wins in November, though, the president who is inaugurated next January will likely find much of the country harboring deep doubts about his legitimacy, and that could make enacting his policy agenda and leading the nation far more difficult.
“Neither president will have a honeymoon, meaning it will be extremely challenging to get big legislative wins in that crucial first year,” Cohen said.
However, the fact that the United States has gone through several disputed and divisive elections in the past provides Bennion with hope that American democracy can weather whatever happens this November without suffering deep institutional damage.
“We have survived terrible crises and periods of great division before, and we will survive it again,” she said. “Public officials can lead the way by showing a shared commitment to free and fair elections.”

Sherlock Holmes, 1899: Detective 2.0 (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Note: As always, please let me know if you want to be tagged or untagged :)
… Look, I said I wasn’t going to write about this one. And I know that it hardly counts as an. ‘obscure’ adaptation, although to be fair it doesn’t appear often in tumblr discussions. But Sherlock Holmes by William Gillette is the first ever licensed Holmes adaptation, so of course I had to read it, and then I had thoughts and—well, here we are.
This is the fourth installment of my series on obscure Sherlock Holmes adaptations. For a master-list of previous write-ups, see this post.
Production and Reception
William Gillette’s Sherlock Holmes exists in two primary iterations. The first is a play released in 1899 (you can read the script here), and the second is a 1916 silent-film starring several of the stage actors, including Gillette as Holmes. This post will discuss the play only; I will review the film in part 2.
The original script for Sherlock Holmes was written by Doyle, but his script was rejected and heavily reworked by William Gillette. Gillette’s script showcases an original plot, although it features Moriarty and Alice Falukner, a loose Irene Adler analogue. Disappointingly, the parallel between Alice and Irene is purely circumstantial: Alice has much of Irene’s courage but none of her active cleverness, and is reduced to a paper-thin damsel-in-distress. This is even more unfortunate given that—contrary to Doyle’s wishes—Gillette makes her Holmes’s love interest, thus initiating the hellish proliferation of Adler/Holmes storylines. So … thanks for that one, Gillette.
The play was wildly successful, and Alan Barns asserts that it has been “crucial to the development of Sherlock Holmes on film … [i]ts impact cannot be overestimated.” Even Doyle appears to have softened towards the play after seeing it performed, and is quoted by Vincent Starrett as saying: “I was charmed both with the play, the acting, and the pecuniary result." Whether Doyle was more pleased by the art or the currency is perhaps unclear.
For myself, insofar as it is the first Holmes adaptation I find this play fascinating; but insofar as it is just one of many retellings, my feelings are mixed. I confess I kept comparing it to Doyle’s stage adaptation of The Speckled Band (you can read the script here and my analysis here), and Gillette’s play seldom looked better for it. I found Doyle’s plot more compelling, his villain more threatening, and his characters more vibrant. All the same I was not bored reading Gillette’s play, got a few laughs, appreciated Gillette’s Watson and was intrigued—if not wholly pleased—by his Holmes.
But I hope you don’t think me terribly petty if I confess that I struggle to entirely forgive Gillette for launching the legacy of Holmes adaptations with a ‘straight’ Holmes.
William Gillette as Sherlock Holmes
There are things I quite like about Gillette’s Holmes. He is deeply composed, but fully capable of action and self-defense. He has plenty of snark, is openly affectionate with his Watson, yet is deeply troubled—he cannot be accused of being without feeling.
Nevertheless, I suspect that he played a large role in establishing the stereotype of the hard-boiled detective, the DFP, the detached and cold-hearted reasoning machine. Gillette consistently leans into Holmes darker and more reserved qualities: his Holmes is almost always composed and never excited—although he is often quietly amused—and there is little sense of his love for an audience. The extremity of his cocaine habit is emphasized, to the point that he is clearly suicidal—an aspect that is belabored rather frequently.
But the thing that really irks me is the case. The case is loosely based on A Scandal in Bohemia, in which Holmes is working for a prince in an attempt to gain incriminating letters/pictures from a woman. Scandal is an anomaly in the canon insofar as Holmes is not strictly on the side of justice—either in the audience’s eyes or his own—and yet goes through with it (x). This is distinctly unusual for a man who ordinarily allows nothing, including the law, to sway him from what he sees as true justice. And yet it is this dark deviation that Gillette chooses as the framework for presenting Holmes to a new and wider audience.
And look—there’s nothing wrong with exploring Holmes’s darker side. But I still struggle with the characterization on two levels:
I’m not saying the persistence of this darker Holmes in public imagination was Gillette’s fault; he’s hardly responsible for all adaptations that followed his. I just … I just would have liked the legacy of Holmes adaptations not to begin with a straight, hard(er)-hearted Holmes.
Frankly, I find the ‘borderline-cruel straight white guy is redeemed because a pretty young girl saw his secret golden heart’ plot infinitely more tired and less compelling than the complex, transgressive, damaged, but deeply kind character Doyle created.
Edward Fielding as John Watson
If Gillette perpetuated some of my least favorite Holmes stereotypes, on the whole the same cannot be said of his portrayal of Watson. Yes, Watson is sidelined to make room for Alice, and like the other characters in the script I found him a bit … flat. But he is never portrayed as a fool, his role was somewhat larger than I expected, his connection to Holmes is palpable, and if I had a checklist of characteristics a good Watson ought to posses, he would do a surprisingly good job checking them off.
The first thing we know of Watson is Holmes’s affection for him. The second is Watson’s protectiveness of Holmes as he expresses his distress over Holmes’s cocaine habit and the danger posed by Moriarty. We also get a sense of Watson’s attraction to danger when he observes, “this is becoming interesting,” as matters become tense.
My favorite moment, however, comes near the end when Watson is alone and  two false patients come in, attempting to set a trap for Holmes. Watson not only catches on to their facades immediately, he also notices that the blind had been raised when he briefly stepped out of the room. So thanks to Gillette’s script, we get to see Watson be clever, observant, and a great doctor all at once—a rare occurrence in early adaptations.
As much as I enjoy this scene, however, it also gets at my one major disappointment with Gillette’s Watson: although he is entirely capable, he is never given anything to do. In this instance, when Watson realizes his ‘patients’ are setting a trap he begins to act; but then Holmes appears and takes charge. Later Watson blocks the window and closes the blinds to avoid a signal being sent out to Moriarty—but only at Holmes’s instructions. And this, sadly, is the consistent pattern of the play.
In the end, I was left with a confusing dual sense that on the one hand Gillette seems to have a fairly good grasp of Watson and his capabilities, but on the other doesn’t really seem to know what to do with him. He seems to know that Watson is important, but not how he is important.
So … What About Johnlock?
After everything I’ve said, that’s clearly a hard ‘no,’ right? Well, sort of—they certainly aren’t riding off into the sunset together, but I still find myself with rather too much to say on this topic. To my mind, there are four categories worth touching on: a). The relative strength of the Holmes/Alice relationship vs the Holmes/Watson relationship, b). subtext carried over from Doyle’s stories, c). queer elements of the Holmes/Alice relationship, and d). assorted moments.
a). Holmes/Alice vs Holmes/Watson
Here’s the thing: my complaints about the Holmes/Alice romance aren’t just because Holmes is gay and in love with Watson. They are also because Gillette couldn’t have written more of a dime-a-dozen (+vaguely sexist) hetero romance if he tried. Here is a point-by-point summary of their ‘relationship’:
Holmes is on the point of further stripping agency away from a helpless girl who has been physically and psychologically abused for months.
Alice cries.
Holmes doesn’t do the cruel thing (he’s still planning to do it, but Alice doesn’t know).
They are now in love.
I’m not exaggerating here: in terms of length the above scene is hardly a blip in the play, and yet next time they see each other Alice is saying that if Holmes dies she wants to die too. Yep.
On the other hand, the relationship between Sherlock and Watson is established and their care for one another is palpable. Watson first appears immediately after Holmes refuses to see Mrs. Hudson, clearly wishing to be alone. But then his boy Billy comes up, and this exchange follows:
BILLY: It's Doctor Watson, sir. You told me as I could always show 'im up. HOLMES: Well! I should think so. (Rises and meets WATSON.) BILLY: Yes, sir, thank you, sir. Dr. Watson, sir!
(Enter DR. WATSON. BILLY, grinning with pleasure as he passes in, goes out at once.)
HOLMES (extending left hand to WATSON): Ah, Watson, dear fellow. WATSON (going to HOLMES and taking his hand): How are you, Holmes? HOLMES: I'm delighted to see you, my dear fellow, perfectly delighted, upon my word.
The affection, intimacy, eagerness for one another’s company, and trust evident in these first lines remains throughout the script, and puts Holmes and Alice’s hurried and stilted relationship to shame.
Ultimately Holmes marries Alice and Watson is sidelined, but the relationship between him and Watson remains the more palpable and affecting.
b). Subtext carried over from Doyle’s stories
There are at least two threads that are strongly reminiscent of subtextual cornerstones in Doyle’s canon. Perhaps they are intentional, or perhaps Gillette borrowed them from the stories/Doyle’s original script without reading them the way we do, but they exist nonetheless.
The first is Holmes’s cocaine use. In the canon Holmes occasionally claims that he uses drugs to escape the crushing boredom of inactivity between cases, but The Sign of Four in particular makes it clear that he also uses them for emotional comfort—specifically to cope with loosing Watson to Mary. A similar pattern is evident in Gillette’s play: his Holmes claims that the threat of Moriarty “saves me any number of doses of those deadly drugs,” and yet Watson points out that Holmes has been using the drugs “in ever-increasing doses” despite the fact that he has been engaged in his most all-consuming case—fighting Moriarty—for fourteen months. But the cause of Holmes’s increasing drug use and attendant suicidal depression is far less clear in here than it is in the canon.
Hollow as his semi-frequent ‘because I’m bored’ explanations ring in light of Moriarty, I am inclined to think Holmes is most honest near the end when describing his distress over his treatment of Alice:
HOLMES (turning suddenly to WATSON): Watson—she trusted me! She—clung to me! … and I was playing a game! … a dangerous game – but I was playing it! It will be the same to-night! She'll be there —I'll be here! She'll listen—she'll believe—and she'll trust me—and I'll—be playing—a game. No more – I've had enough! It's my last case!
To me this clearly reads as an ongoing distress which was brought to a head by Holmes’s association with Alice rather than originating with it—“I’ve had enough! It’s my last case” indicates that the dilemma is linked to Holmes’s work as a whole, not the affair with Alice particularly. The surface (and likely intended) reading of this is that the work was a decent antidote for boredom for a time, but was ultimately too empty of real connection to be fulfilling in the long term, resulting in Holmes’s ultimate spiral into depression.
However, it also works surprisingly well for a queer reading: Holmes’s prior life was in some way a facade, “a dangerous game” perhaps involving the ongoing deception of someone he cared about. Interesting ...
A queer reading of his deterioration is further supported by the fact that Watson is married in this story. While we don’t now how long he has been married, one wonders whether his absence might coincide with the increase in Holmes’s drug habits—it seems possible that Gillette recognized the link between cocaine and Watson’s marriage in the cannon and intended committed fans to likewise make the connection in the play.
Another interesting moment comes when Holmes is lamenting ‘the good old days,’ and in theory he is complaining about the un-originality of criminals. But although he begins by speaking of what “I” used to do, later he slips into “we.” Is he really missing the old days of criminal creativity, or is he missing the time when he had a constant companion to share them with?
In short, although Gillette is likely appropriating the cocaine and never-quite-explained melancholy of the canon merely to portray Holmes having a mid-life crisis, it works surprisingly well—and in my opinion more compellingly—to read it as the fallout from the loss of his companion for whom he had socially inadmissible feelings which kept him playing a duplicitous game. (Unfortunately the side-effect of this reading might be that the solution is for Holmes to step out of the ‘dangerous game,’ leaving his old life in Baker Street in literal ashes, and into the clear light of a heterosexual relationship, which is, uh … Wrong).
One other brief matter of note: to my great amusement this play also joins canon in playing the game of the vanishing wife. Watson has scarcely entered the story before Holmes comments on Mary’s (timely as ever) absence on “a little visit,” and near the end we discover that Holmes and Watson have planned a trip to the continent (!). How long is the trip? Is Mary coming? Does she have other plans? How does she feel about her husband gallivanting off to another country with a man pursued by a master criminal??? Meh. Who knows.
Miss Plot Device does, however, appear briefly and silently offstage when Watson wants Holmes to peek in at her for a quick lesson on domesticity.
c). Queer elements of the Holmes/Alice relationship
We’ve established that their relationship is as dime-a-dozen and cringey as literary relationships come. However, in the final scenes Holmes has admitted his affection for her to Watson but believes he must set them aside for the following reasons:
HOLMES: That girl!—young—exquisite—just beginning her sweet life—I—seared, drugged, poisoned, almost at an end! No! no! I must cure her! I must stop it, now—while there's time!
And again, when Alice has confessed her love for him:
HOLMES: no such person as I should ever dream of being a part of your sweet life! It would be a crime for me to think of such a thing! There is every reason why I should say good-bye and farewell! There is every reason—
So essentially, he sees his love for almost as some sort of disease, even a crime, something that would endanger the one he loves, that he ought to resist for their sake; only he is quite wrong and that love is in fact the way to happiness for them both … Hmm. Well then.
d). Assorted
There were a few moments in the script which do not fit within a wider thematic arc, but which I couldn’t go without mentioning.
1. Upon Watson’s first appearance, Holmes greets him and then says:
HOLMES: I'm delighted to see you, my dear fellow, perfectly delighted, upon my word—but—I'm sorry to observe that your wife has left you in this way.
Okay, so Mary has only left for a visit and is back the next day, but is it just me or did Holmes make it sound like she’d left Watson for good?? Because if that was intentional, that a first-class Petty Gay antic.
2. The cocaine scene near the beginning ends with these line:
WATSON (going near HOLMES—putting hand on HOLMES' shoulder) Ah Holmes—I am trying to save you. HOLMES (earnest at once—places right hand on WATSON'S arm): You can't do it, old fellow—so don't waste your time.
Partly I’m just struck by the tenderness of the moment, which is heightened by the stage directions. But I also wonder—why couldn’t Watson save Holmes when Alice presumably can? Apparently Holmes needs romantic affection to move forward. If he believed that Watson was capable of offering him that, would Gillette’s Holmes accept it?
3. In a confrontation with the criminals, one of them reveals that they struck Watson at an earlier stage of the conflict. Holmes’s response?
HOLMES (to ALICE without turning—intense, rapid): Ah!
(CRAIGIN stops dead.)
HOLMES: Don't forget that face. (Pointing to CRAIGIN.) In three days I shall ask you to identify it in the prisoner's dock.
Its not necessarily romantic, but I can’t pass over protective!Holmes, especially given its slight Garridebs vibe. I also can’t resist mentioning that this bit all but interrupts the first clearly romantic moment between Holmes and Alice.
4. Near the end, when Moriarty is captured and spewing threats of revenge, he declares that Holmes will encounter his retribution during his planned trip to the continent with Watson. Ever the optimist, Watson suggests that they cancel the trip, but Holmes replies:
It would be quite the same. What matters it here or there—if it must come.
There is nothing strange in the moment; what is curious is that, for all Holmes’s fears about the damage a relationship with Alice might do her, the very real threat of Moriarty is never mentioned. Realistically this is likely a bit of sloppy writing, and yet the resultant image of an omnipotent web (and yes, the spider’s web metaphor is used for Moriarty in the play) which will inescapably pursue Holmes and Watson wherever they flee and yet leaves the appropriately heterosexual Holmes at Alice alone is, um, Really Something.
5. Finally, as I wrap up I cannot resist calling your attention to a number of lines and stage directions which are (almost definitely) meaningless in context, but out of context are too delightfully gay to ignore. Here they are, presented entirely without context for your viewing pleasure:
HOLMES: Mrs. Watson! Home! Love! Life! Ah, Watson!
HOLMES: I must have that. (Turns away towards WATSON.) I must have that.
HOLMES: (Saunters over to above WATSON'S desk.)
HOLMES: Why, this is terrible! (Turns back to WATSON. Stands looking in his face.)
… I’ll just leave those there.
After everything, the question of whether Gillette might have seen or suspected a romance between Holmes and Watson is unresolved. For myself, I vacillate regularly on how likely I think it is. This excellent post gets into why it is quite likely that Gillette may at the least have seen Holmes and Watson's relationship as a homoerotic (but strictly sexless and ultimately woman-mediated) friendship. Thus at minimum he could have intended to hint at the pain of moving away from such a deeply bonded friendship. From there it is not difficult to imagine the that he could have speculated the possibility that something in their relationship or desires moved beyond what was acceptable in Victorian society. Even if he did  there remain two very distinct possibilities: a). That he was secretly supportive and despite protecting himself with a socially acceptable paring tried to hint at the pain of a forbidden love and even queer-coded the heterosexual resolution, or b). That he saw himself as ‘saving’ Holmes from ‘self-destructive game’ of his old love, redeeming him through the all-healing power of heterosexuality (ugh).
On the other hand, there is also a highly eminent possibility that I’m just looking too hard, and nothing I thought I might see was intended to mean anything in that way.
Ultimately, at this stage my only conclusion is that the evidence is inconclusive. But I will say this: regardless of intention, the relationship between Holmes and Watson remains the strongest and most poignant in the play, and faithfulness to elements of the cannon results in moments that sure do make it look like something is up. If nothing else, that made me smile.
Conclusion: Should You Read It?
Well, it depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a particularly compelling/unique/vibrant take on Sherlock Holmes, or even just a story with a thrilling plot, intriguing concepts, and living characters, this isn’t a bad choice—but you could do better. (This is where I remind you that Doyle’s play, The Adventure of the Speckle Band, is genuinely excellent). But if you’re looking for an entertaining play which also happens to be the first Sherlock Holmes adaptation in existence and which had an enormous impact on every adaptation that came after—then yeah. Go read it. It’s right here! Have fun! And if you post about it, whoever you are, I would deeply appreciate a tag :)

trump then, in January 2019, when he suddenly threw a tantrum trying to get $5.7 billion in funding for a stretch of his stupid wall:
trump single-handedly kept the government shut down for over a month, in the longest political shutdown ever. He had insisted he would keep it shut down for "months, even years," if he didn't get his wall money. The shutdown affected 800,000 federal workers, and their families and creditors and local businesses.
Then he changed his mind.
He cost the country $11 billion.
trump now: as covid-19 tears through the country, with 5 million cases and rising, and with no national response other than to push for everything to re-open and let the death count be what it will be.
trump is claiming that Democrats are "trying to keep the country shut down" just to hurt his re-election chances, and that the virus will just go away "like things go away."
The shutdowns are different in extent and reason, but both times, trump has proved beyond any doubt that he cares about nothing but himself.
This is from one month and 2 million fewer infections ago:
He's still pushing. He's still lying non-stop. And he has still done nothing to manage the coronavirus or the economic devastation in this country other than to make it all worse.

Final week of current stuff~
-
June 20
I woke up before 9AM... somehow. (Itching + heat probs didn’t help.)
I rambled a bit on Twitter about grapefruit, felt a bit risky/curious about eating just a quarter of one this morning. (Was a bit concerned about drug interactions.)
Did some sketches, chatted, did some dishes, and made today’s Hello Fresh meal. Zucchini pomodoro penne bake an enjoyable meal, even moreso thanks to it’s relative ease to make.
I spent a few hours after that- chatting, playing KH, and steaming some leftover zucchini grandma brought us.
(Okay it was late, but I really jumbled up my exercise itinerary today...)
First, Day 25 of the CSP. Level 3, max rest. Counts were fast and form wasn’t stellar... but I’ll accept it. That was nevertheless intense. Also, had a few moments of “but wait, what side am I holding for again?“
Second , Day 25 of the MC. 15′ meditation + OM Mantra. I decided to sit against my bed and let my arms rest in lap. It went alright... got interrupted  twice and had a few moments where I think I was dozing off a bit. I’ll call it done.
Third , today’s DD. 1′ tree pose with EC. Out of order, since I barely remembered to get this one done before calling it a day. Breezy and fun work.
Last , Day 25 of the VP. Level 3, no rest. Pretty fun and breezy. Hip flexors felt it a little, too.
I regretted my decision to break out my 2DS... got to bed way too late again.

June 21
I woke up a bit before 2PM.
I believe the first thing I did waking up was accompanying brother to get some Subway. After some YouTube, I got started with today’s exercise.
First, today’s DD. 30 side-to-side lunges with EC. Just about manageable.
Second, Day 26 of the VP. Level 3, 30″. Arms needed some recovery time to work with, but got it done.
(After watching Lord of War, Dinner for Shmucks, and chatting with a friend...)
Third, Day 26 of the CSP. Level 3, max rest. I debated heavily on rain checking it, since it was past midnight. But I did it anyways. Also doable, but I felt I had to try to be a bit more quiet.
Last, Day 26 of the MC. 1′ equal breathing + 15′ meditation. Got a little impatient at the very end. But I did have a few moments of enjoying some ujjayi-style breathing sounds.
I then repeated yesterday’s mistake of playing more 2DS games, despite sense telling me not too... oh well.
-
June 22
I woke up around 2PM.
Ate dinner, just some Chinese fast food. I spent a few hours watching some YouTube and reading some cool SaSi analysis posts before getting started on exercises.
First, today’s DD. 1′ hollow hold with EC. Still not particular fond of this one, but can still manage.
Second, Day 27 of the VP. Level 3, no rest. A bit of stretching stuff, overall quite breezy~
(After chatting and passing some more time to allow food to go down...)
Third, Day 27 of the CSP. Level 3, max rest. That was pretty intense, but it was a good call to stall a bit for more food digestion beforehand. Honestly, quads got a good deal of action with the core/abs. But, consider it done.
Last, Day 27 of the MC. Backup & Restore + 15′ meditation. One thing I always like about B&R is the rush of cool you get after getting out of the second child’s pose. Did doze off a lil during tonight’s session and it took a bit for my right quads to stop trembling from fatigue to stay relatively still. Eventually stopped but did crush my left foot a tiny bit awkwardly (was sitting cross-legged).
After YouTube and some gaming, I decided I would try to actually get to sleep in the green zone. Despite the impulse to play more games crossing my mind. Yay!
-
June 23
... I woke up just shy of 5AM. Had a restless night’s sleep. Got to be PROFOUNDLY itchy. I think ti was because of the heat. =_=
After some deliberation on twitter, I ordered some OTC antihistamines, did some dishes, confirmed an appointment, and followed up on our census response. I then took a nap.
Woke up again at around 3PM.
Tanked my ENTIRE day playing Gemcraft and regretted it.
Got to bed obscenely late again, too.
-
June 24
I woke up before 1PM.
After a bit of YouTube and a phone call from my case manager, I started to play catch-up with my exercise stuff.
First, yesterday’s DD. 2′ jumping Ts with EC. Took a false-start trying to find a sustainable pace. But I eventually I nailed an exact 1/sec pace, 120 reps. "Forbidden Fruit" turned out to be a good tempo to work alongside. (As well as in terms of run-time.) :,D
Second, today’s DD. 20 up/down planks with EC. I went at this as fast as I could so I could get through it. Did wear some long sleeves for it. Elbows still had to look forward to doing more tho. :P
Second, Day 28 of the VP. Level 3, no rest. The heat plus those 2 DDs made this harder than it otherwise would be. Notably, especially at the start - doing balanced leg raises was hard and had a few drop-downs (still a self-imposed challenge there.).
(After a bit of time recovering from that with a bit of rest and pickle juice for electrolytes...)
Third, Day 28 of the CSP. Level 3, max rest. Elbows were not the most happy about more up/downs... but I was able to manage. If barely in the last couple sets.
Second, Day 29 of the VP. Level 3, 30″ rest. Arms were a bit tired after that, and this was an arms day. So I started off with that rest period, did think to close it after a couple sets... but eh. Might as well go a bit easier on myself after everything...
(After a bit of debate on whether to do more doubling up...)
Third, Day 29 of the CSP. Level 2, max rest. Accrued fatigue made me feel like Level 3 wasn’t happening today. Neck strain was probs the worst part to contend with here...
(After some dishes...)
Last, Day 28 of the MC.15′ meditation. I did some slow breaths, counting upward for each inhale/exhale. Had a few brief moments losing count, but doing such does help to maintain a bit more deliberate focus.
After a bit of a headache setting things up, I streamed that chibi!Remus drawing. I wound up pulling an allnighter, by the time I finished it.
-
June 25
After posting that art and doing a bit of gaming, one of the first things I did was take a hot shower. Sleep dep made me feel my tired muscles more... taking a hot shower just now helped that for a bit.
I wound up staying up so I could get to the laundromat as planned and deal with clothes. Afterwards, spent time unpacking some deliveries, taking out the trash/recyclables, making dinner, feeding/watering dog, and putting away my laundry... honestly was too tired to be saddled with all that. But I did what I needed to do.
Very late, but one of the last things I spent energy on today was exercise.
First, today’s DD. 1′ climbers with EC. 130 reps were counted by the end. Given my food choices, I’m glad this was the only exercise on docket that could aggravate the stomach. And even then, it went without much issue.
Second, Day 30 of the Vitality Program. Level 3, no rest. Honestly, the only hard part here was probably the calf raises - given how sore my calves were getting (after those Jumping Ts and no sleep to recover from them). But this was just manageable.
Third, Day 30 of the Core Strength Program. Level 3, 30″ rest This was pretty breezy by this program’s standards. Was arguably too exhausted to mind how high I was targeting for the leg raises, but I won’t dock any points for it.
Last, Day 29 of the MC.15′ meditation + OM Mantra. Because tired, leaned against bed again. Did have a few moments of drifting focus from the mantra. But I did the best I could and appreciate the activity.
I went to bed in the green zone. Because my wall was hit.
-
June 26
I woke up proper around 1PM.
One of the first things I did today was make today’s HF dinner. Hoison-sesame roasted veggie bowls. I was thrilled that dad liked this one, given that he has stated not liking sweet potatoes / yams before. This def speaks to how much of a big deal is in HOW you cook stuff (than only just what's in it).
I then spent time doing dishes, before doing a little bit of exercise.
First, today’s DD. 40 raised leg circles. Just about manageable.
Last, Day 30 of the Meditation Challenge. 20′ meditation. Tried to focus on breathing, but I did have some trouble staying focused on it (was fidgety in thought and with my hands/arms)Observed left leg went to sleep and took a good minute or 2 to normalize sensation. Didn’t stop me from getting up and walking around, KNOWING after the first window where the sensation feels okay you get slammed with weakness/parasthesia. :,D
I then spent some time to clean the kitchen countertops and toilet. Did some logging and video editing before turning in. Pretty late, later than yesterday.
-
Summary of Experience:
I finished both my programs on time, in June 25.
The Vitality Program. was a good warm-up and mostly a breeze to get through! Easily managed Level 3 for the whole program. What I did note was how long I needed to rest between sets.
No rest for 25 days
30″ rest for 5 days (arm-centric days)
The Core Strength Program had a lot of days that kicked my ass a bit. But I’m happy with how far I could take it most of the time. I only needed to knock 2 days down to Level 2 (16 & 29) and did Level 3 for the rest. I also recorded the spread for how long I needed to rest between sets.
No rest for 3 days
30″ rest for 2 days
1′ rest for 5 days
1′30″ rest for 5 days
Max rest for 20 days
I finished the in Meditation Challenge June 26. This was a good thing to rerun, for many reasons. I did it all to silence. I occasionally experimented with different sitting positions (largely determined by how tired I was). Focused on breath most of the time, counting them a couple times.

shatter your skull, fight pain with more pain
He realized now, much too late into the game, that the small throbbing had grown into a full blown headache. His only real consolation was the knowledge that he still had time to prevent the headache from morphing into a migraine; a small chance, but a chance nonetheless. (OR it's movie night and logan gets a migraine) (my first ts fanfic this is exciting. I hope you guys enjoy it, it's based off my experiences with migraines - and fun fact I wrote this with a migraine. thanks to @my-chemical-anx for reading this before I posted this and catching a typo! you can also read this on my ao3 - http://archiveofourown.org/works/11822100 ) ------------------ It had started off subtly enough, an ache behind Logan’s eyes that was barely noticeable. He was in his room, sorting and updating his flashcards when he was missing something. It was a soothing and mindless task, perfect to help him relax after the stress that came with filming a video. Tomorrow they would edit the footage they gathered and have it up on schedule. If there was one thing Logan loved, it was schedules. When he was halfway through his stack, there was a knock on his door and it swung open to reveal Patton grinning at him. “Hey, Lo!” He took in the flashcards spread across the floor. “Hope I’m not interrupting anything.” “Not at all.” Logan said, pushing his glasses up his nose. “I’m assuming you need something?” Patton walked over and sat down across from Logan. He picked up a card and squinted at it before putting back with a smile. “Roman finally picked a movie and sent me to get you.” Logan shook his head and began to gather his cards into a neat pile. Movie night, a weekly occurrence in the mindscape, had become synonymous with Roman’s controlling behavior. The creative side had taken it upon himself to make movie night - in his words - perfect. (“What it that, pocket calculator?”   Logan looked up from the DVD player and lifted the movie case so Roman could see it. “A documentary concerning the moon and it’s future with Earth.” “A documentary doesn’t count as a movie.” Roman snarked from where he lay draped across the loveseat. “First of all, a movie is a story or event recorded by a camera as a set of moving images and shown in a theater or on television; this documentary is a theoretical analysis of the events surrounding the moon in a few hundred years and therefore counts as a movie. And secondly, I thought it was my turn to pick what we are watching?” “Oh, come on kiddo!” Patton jumped in. “You might enjoy it!” “It can’t be worse than Patton’s movie.” Virgil added, not looking up from his phone. Patton raised an eyebrow at the darker facet. “You and I both know that ‘Air Buds’ is a great movie.”) Logan pushed himself to his feet and stretched his arms over his head. He wasn’t sure how long he had been sitting in that one position. An hour? Two? His legs were sore and it felt good to stand up. Logan followed Patton out into the hallway, the latter chattering away. He did his best to pay attention, but the ache had grown to a dull throb right in between his eyes, and it drew his attention away from Patton, who didn’t seem to realize that his conversation was one sided. The commons was brightly lit, a stark contrast from the low lights in his room, and they made him squint until his eyes had adjusted. The other two sides had already found their places; Virgil was balanced on the arm of one couch, headphones around his neck and expression unreadable while Roman sat on the other couch, remote in hand. Patton slid next to Roman and Logan took the empty seat near Virgil. “Glad you could join us,” Roman said with a toothy grin before starting the movie. The all-too familiar sounds of “When You Wish Upon A Star” filled the commons. Logan closed his eyes and sunk back against the couch cushions below him. The added sounds of the movie grated against his ears, assaulting his senses. Everything was too much, and it made the throbbing in his head worse. He realized now, much too late into the game, that the small throbbing had grown into a full blown headache. His only real consolation was the knowledge that he still had time to prevent the headache from morphing into a migraine; a small chance, but a chance nonetheless. Logan pulled a water bottle into his hand, using the meager amount of energy he had to avoid getting up and disturbing the other three sides, all of whom were engrossed in the movie. He unscrewed the cap and drank it in a few gulps before refilling it again. He did this multiple times, drinking and refilling whenever the water was gone. He lost count after the fourth time; it was merely a method now - drink, refill, repeat. Logan was vaguely aware of the sound of the movie rising into a crescendo, a song no doubt. He could hear Roman singing along and the low humming coming from the direction of Virgil when a pain shot through his skull. Logan froze, clenching the water bottle in his fist before another stab of pain hit him. The migraine had arrived. Abandoning all attempts to be quiet, he leapt up, startling Virgil who nearly fell off his spot on the arm of the couch, and dashed into the kitchen. He threw open the cabinets and began to search for the Advil, thoughts bouncing around in his head. Where did he put the bottle last? When was the last time he used the Advil? Why did he think not drinking anything beforehand was a good idea? Even thinking hurt, each word hitting him like a bullet. His hand curled around the small Advil container and he pulled out two pills, swallowing them dry. “Logan, are you okay?” The voice came from behind Logan and he jumped, not expecting it. The container fell and hit the floor, the pills inside rattling around noisily. Logan dove to the floor and snatched the container up, trying to silence the noise. He looked up and saw the three sides outline in the door, Patton looking concerned, Virgil looking boh parts nervous and irritated, and Roman looking confused. “I have a migraine.” The reaction is immediate. “Logan,” Patton said, and Logan can hear the concern in his voice. “Is this because you haven't been drinking water? You know you have to.” Logan waved Patton off in response, not having the energy to explain that no, he didn't drink enough water because he forgot and yes, he knows that a lack of water triggers his migraine. “I'll be fine.” He says instead, his eyes shut to block out most of the light. “I already took Advil and need to sleep it off.” He didn't mention the pain rolling through his skull; he didn't have to. He's gotten enough migraines that the other three sides know how they affect the logical facet. Hands grabbed his shoulders and helped him up, leading him to his darkened room. Before Logan collapsed into his bed to try and rid himself off the migraine, he scribbled a note to himself: Remember to drink water.

Voting Machines Exposed
An independent team of computer experts has exposed how electronic voting machines are insecurely programmed and are vulnerable to hackers who can manipulate data and steal elections without leaving a trace. A team of computer security experts has examined the software that runs one of the leading touch-screen voting systems currently used in the US and discovered "significant security flaws." The voting systems examined fell "far below even the most minimal security standards." Three experts from the Information Security Institute (ISI) at John Hopkins University in Baltimore and a fourth from Rice University in Houston analyzed the source code found on a publicly available web site belonging to Ohio based Diebold Election Systems Inc. (DESI). Bob Urosevich heads DESI. His brother Todd is a vice president of a competing company, Omaha-based Electron Systems & Software. These two companies count nearly 80% of the votes cast in the US. The Hopkins group and other experts believe the "source code" they examined is used in Diebolds' direct recording electronic (DRE) Accu-Vote-TS (touch screen) voting system. The Accu-Vote-TS system was first used on a statewide basis in Georgia on Nov. 5, 2002. Aviel D. Rubin, an asociate professor of computer science at John Hopkins and technical director of ISI, headed the study. The groups 24 page report "Analysis of an Electronic Voting System" was released on July 23. "The most fundemental problem with such a voting system is that the entire election hinges on the correctness, robustness, and security of the software within the voting terminal. The model where individual vendors write proprietary code to run our elections appears to be unreliable and and if we do not change the process of designing our voting systems, we will have no confidence that our election results will reflect the will of the electorate. Electronic voting with its inherrent risks places our very democracy at risk." The report goes on to say, "The only known solution to this problem is to introduce a 'voter-verifiable trail' in which the tally of the paper ballots take precedence over any electronic tallies." Dan S. Wallach, assistant professor of computer science at Rice University, added "We found a list of flaws, any one of which could ruin the integrity of the election." The "glaring weakness in the system is a lack of verifiable audit trail to double-check voting results," Rubin told the Associated Press. "I think they need to have paper trails, and I don't think these kinds of machines should be used for voting." The experts in this report discovered a host of security flaws in the software and exposed how the system is virtually wide-open to vote fraud and manipulation of results. The Diebold voting system is open to "insider" attacks at every point of contact on the network, including the voter and from "outsider" attacks on the data as it is being transmitted. Obvious flaws in the code were left uncorrected. The report said, "There appears to have been lttle quality control in the process." Because the voting machines communicate in a network, anybody with access to the data, from poll worker to a telephone company employee, could manipulate the data and the outcome. The system could be tricked by anyone with $100 worth of computer equipment, said Adam Stubblefield, one of the experts from John Hopkins. "The bottom line is that all of the existing electronic voting machines are fundamentally flawed," said Peter G. Neumann, principle scientist at Standford Research Institutes Internationals Computer Science Laboratory in Palo Alto, California. "The real problem is that the federal election systems standards stink. They allow totally insecure voting systems to be certified."

The {industry} is wanting ahead to a slew of reforms from an import obligation reduce on gold gadgets, decreasing of Aviation Turbine Gasoline costs to allocation to training. Business heads weigh in with their want checklist: TS Kalyanaraman, Chairman & Managing Director, Kalyan Jewellers We hope for a discount within the import obligation on gold from 10 % to 4-5 %. This could assist buoy up constructive enterprise sentiments, and a reduce within the obligation construction will finally profit the buyer. A step on this route will even promote the import of gold by way of legalized channels leading to elevated income for the federal government. We stay up for organized jewelry retail chains enjoying a extra pro-active position within the Gold Monetisation Scheme which might assist the federal government in reaching its targets of mobilizing gold from customers throughout the nation. Jewelry buy by way of EMIs is an alternative choice that we wish the federal government to look into. Vishal Suri, Managing Director, SOTC Journey We imagine the most important enhance to development and employment right this moment will come from the companies sector, particularly the tourism {industry}. India is a big marketplace for journey and tourism. With 70 airports at new areas and extra second airports; enlargement of present airfields, all developed beneath the UDAN Scheme that goals at facilitating regional connectivity, will show to be an impetus for the tourism {industry}. With the brand new authorities, the necessity to decreasing ATF pricing and strengthening infrastructure at tourism websites is of key significance. This can encourage journey and affordability. The federal government additionally must evaluate the aviation coverage and deal with the challenges particularly bilateral coverage, and assist create an ecosystem that acknowledges and helps the aviation {industry}’s viability. Rationalizing the GST fee for motels and incentivising the non-public sector will enhance tourism because the sector holds large potential for driving development and producing employment. Mahesh Iyer, Govt Director and Chief Govt Officer, Thomas Prepare dinner (India) The journey and tourism {industry} is an important contributor to the expansion of the Indian economic system with a strong multiplier affect on employment technology and we’re therefore assured that the Union Funds launched by the federal government will strengthen the {industry} with continuity of its tourism-friendly insurance policies to provide fillip to India’s Inbound, Home and MICE segments. Westay up for elevated focus and sustained supply on key initiatives like UDAN aimed toward enhancing the regional connectivity and inexpensive air journey, Heritage Metropolis Improvement and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY), built-in growth of pilgrimage locations by way of Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spirituality Augmentation Drive (PRASAD), elevated allocation in the direction of enhancement of the e-Visa initiative to incorporate further international locations, growth of recent tourism circuits and points of interest, together with elevated concentrate on infrastructure – roads, railways, airports, waterways and sanitation to catalyse development. Vineet Chaturvedi, Co-founder, Edureka, e-learning firm The way forward for the Indian skilled sector, particularly IT and IT companies, hangs on how quickly they’ll undertake the abilities related to future economies. Investments in expertise and training might be instantly mapped to a rustic’s dedication to financial development, and in the mean time, a re-skilling allowance for all tax-paying people could be a catalyst for quicker and wider adoption of expertise. There may be already discuss of the federal government planning on incentivising corporates to put money into skilling their workforce, however a rebate that treats expertise on par with allowances akin to HRA, LTA, DA is the necessity of the hour to assist retain our nation’s status as a talented powerhouse and fortify our GDP. Additionally, a re-classification of re-skilling in GST to deal with it as a necessity and never a luxurious would assist speed up up-skilling amongst Indian professionals. Yajulu Medury, Director, Mahindra Ecole Centrale, Hyderabad With one of many youngest populations, India can reap the advantages of demographics provided that our children are properly educated and change into accountable residents contributing to India’s development story as we transfer ahead. Offering high quality training means the federal government rising its budgetary allocation on training from the current ranges to a excessive 5-6 % of GDP like within the developed international locations. The draft Nationwide Training Coverage, which stresses this, must be accepted and the mandatory budgetary allocations made to make sure that training turns into a software for financial growth in our nation. D A Prasanna, Founding Chancellor, NIE College Mysore Personal universities should have entry to central analysis grants, as a lot as authorities Universities. Internships in skilled training have been made obligatory by UGC. Corporations have began charging schools to take interns. Interns ought to receives a commission Rs 10-20Ok/Month in order that firms use the intern correctly. To encourage ladies taking on instructing and analysis occupation, the federal government ought to encourage Baby Care (pre-school or playschool or crèche), the place the mom can safely depart the kid and get again to her instructing and analysis profession. Anil Nagar, Founder and CEO, Adda247, preparation platform for all authorities exams The Union Funds for 2019-20 has touched the appropriate notes for rising the demand and development within the economic system. It should assist in stabilising the incomes of the decrease and middle-class sections of the society together with the farmers and staff of the unorganized sector by decreasing the dangers. It should mechanically improve the buying energy of the decrease and middle-class households. It certainly is a recreation changer for the nation. Tarun Chugh, MD & CEO, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance coverage Within the absence of a social safety system in India, we hope the Finance Ministry considers the constructive options of annuity insurance policies and revise the present tax remedy to make all annuities from a pension/annuity contract tax-free. This can encourage long run financial savings amongst individuals for securing their previous age. We additionally hope to see a fee reduce within the tax fee levied on insurance coverage merchandise, thus encouraging an increasing number of individuals to purchase life insurance coverage insurance policies. Additional, with the rising value of dwelling coupled with inflation and burgeoning healthcare prices, we hope to see a change in restrict for deduction beneath Part 80C. The current restrict of Rs. 150,000 will get exhausted by different alternate options akin to Tuition charges, Housing Mortgage Compensation, obligatory Provident fund deduction by an employer, and many others. Therefore, we really feel a separate restrict must be offered for deduction in the direction of Life insurance coverage premium as Life insurance coverage contributions are the one supply of safety (life cowl) and long-term financial savings to the general public at massive. Alternatively, the prevailing restrict of Rs.150,000 must be enhanced (i.e. from Rs.150,000 to Rs.300,000) because the mixed restrict of Rs.150,000 is just too low to cater to all of the contributions it covers.” Anirudha Taparia, Govt Director, IIIFL Wealth Administration The Finance Minister ought to concentrate on reforms, somewhat than any short-term stimulus. Whereas sustaining fiscal self-discipline, the general goal stays to realize inclusive development. The federal government should take note of the ability growth of the youth and employment technology. The funds ought to ideally encourage non-public investments throughout sectors in order that firms and industries can enter a development trajectory. Governance and accountability want to enhance in public sector models and steps have to be taken to draw the appropriate expertise for the long run viability of those establishments. The finance minister might have a look at rising the capability of Insolvency and Chapter courts to hurry up resolutions and scale back the present backlog. Rahul Jain, Head, Personal Wealth Advisory, Edelweiss We hope that the Funds will deal with the present slowdown within the economic system, on the identical time care must be taken to make sure the fiscal deficit doesn’t exceed 3.5 % of GDP in 2018 19. Whereas we have now witnessed some financial slowdown in FY19, we will count on FY20 to definitely see a turnaround in financial development charges, particularly within the second half. A slippage in fiscal targets will trigger hardening of bond yields, within the brief time period, nevertheless, they’re prone to stabilise as inflation is manageable. It’s our view that the double dose of liquidity and monetary nudge might act as a much-needed shot within the arm for the economic system and the potential exemption of LTCG might act as a pleasing shock for the capital markets. Ravindra Agrawal, Founder, Kisankraft For the event of agriculture in India, we wish to see a discount in GST charges to five % for all agricultural machines. The present excessive charges of GST are counter-productive to the purpose of mechanisation of Indian farmers. Prime Minister’s purpose of bringing corporates into the agri setup requires a number of structural adjustments within the regulation. Business farming have to be allowed to be achieved by companies to assist convey mannequin farming practices all around the nation. Rest in restrictions to export agricultural produce will end result within the enchancment of internet realization to the farmers. Rest on the regulatory restrictions going through R&D in agriculture is desperately wanted together with a rise in funding in farmer coaching and training. Indroneel Dutt, CFO, Cleartrip We’re optimistic and hopeful that the federal government will proceed to be open-minded and keep the impetus of its previous initiatives whereas bringing needed reformations to additional allow the aviation sector. The Regional connectivity Scheme titled UDAN wants specific consideration and allocation on this Funds. Elevated digital penetration in the previous few years has been one of many largest contributors to the rise of the Indian journey {industry}. So, we count on the funds to maintain and speed up India’s digital journey. Ajay Durrani, Managing Director, Covestro (India) Personal Restricted, a polymer firm. We count on the federal government to create a holistic concentrate on improvements revolving across the two essential ‘R’s: Re-use and Accountable use and encourage {industry} to embrace round ideas of their technique concentrate on structured effort in the direction of creating a strong waste administration system for the nation. Since it’s unattainable to section out plastic in a single day given its all-pervasive nature in each day life, it turns into crucial to shift gears and concentrate on “Accountable utilization” of plastic led by the federal government and a structured dialogue course of is predicted from the funds on this route. We additionally stay up for the federal government’s concentrate on ushering in an period of transformative multi-modal mobility paradigm. This coupled with a concentrate on higher {industry} incentivisation for the implementation of the second section of the FAME II scheme w hich will result in a extra sustainable atmosphere for companies and the eco-friendly initiatives. Vineet Nayar, Founder Chairman, Sampark Basis and former CEO of HCL Applied sciences The upcoming Funds by Modi 2.Zero authorities ought to see an elevated training spending. Nonetheless, we require a transparent highway map spelling out how and the place to spend this cash. There may be an pressing want for a targeted and sustained funding in enhancing studying outcomes, particularly in faculties in rural India. It’s excessive time policymakers recognized and addressed the actual points ailing the training system. And the actual concern is our failure to interrupt the mould and provide you with artistic and frugal options to enhance the standard of each instructing and studying in lecture rooms, inside the constraints of what we have now on the bottom. Apart from, there’s an acute scarcity of certified lecturers in authorities faculties because of which the states have needed to recruit many under-qualified lecturers. So, there’s an pressing want to extend funding in lecturers coaching applications to introduce them to fashionable instructing methodologies and supplies to help in enhancing tutorial high quality in lecture rooms. Geetika Dayal, Govt Director, TiE Delhi-NCR Whereas there are numerous beneficial insurance policies presently in place, the federal government must make extra revisions to present start-up laws to supply the entrepreneurial ecosystem with the assist it must thrive and develop. To start with, it must get rid of outdated taxes which might be consuming into their profitability and curbing their development potential. Indian entrepreneurs don’t want handouts, however they do want incentives and provisions that may assist them realise their enterprise targets and drive accelerated scale for his or her enterprise ventures. We hope that the re-elected authorities will proceed to construct on the great work that it has been doing for the start-up {industry} with extra conducive insurance policies within the upcoming Funds. Ashish P. Dhakan, MD & CEO, Prama Hikvision India Pvt. Ltd. We expect a growth-oriented Funds with a transparent roadmap for infrastructure growth. The Indian safety {industry} is able to make investments extra within the manufacture of safety methods. We count on the Funds to supply particular assist to facilitate ‘Make in India’ initiatives within the safety {industry}. So as to bolster the ‘Make in India’ program,  there must be a discount in GST on job work from 18 % to 12 %. Little doubt ample there’s ITC obtainable, however it’s going to assist in environment friendly working capital administration. A majority of safety merchandise fall beneath the class of 18 %, whereby the necessity for safety is slowly changing into a necessity. Therefore, there’s a want to think about main safety merchandise viz. CCTV cameras and DVR beneath 12 % bracket in GST.  Tax incentives can be found in a notified zone for organising a unit, which is totally clear, nevertheless, to advertise ‘Make in India’ and improve the share of contribution within the {industry} a greater ecosystem is a much-needed issue. Hitesh Doshi, Chairman, All India Photo voltaic Industries Affiliation AISIA recommends elevating export and manufacturing incentives and a stage enjoying area for the native {industry} vis-a-vis the obligation of impartial imported modules and parts. The survival of the photo voltaic modules producers {industry} is at stake. Subsidies for energy, capital, curiosity, and depreciation to this {industry} and duty-free import of producing gear would help make the {industry} aggressive and appeal to funding in capability creation. We advocate elevating of export incentives from 2 % to no less than 10 % for the modules manufacturing sector to create an export base for India within the spirit of the Make in India initiative. The suggestions come within the backdrop of the final fiscal yr the place main problems with imported modules and parts, at ‘dumping’ costs, from China, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, and by-passing of the safeguard obligation tariff by re-routing by way of uncovered international locations akin to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, had made the {industry} uncompetitive. Rajan Sharma, Founder & Chief Govt Officer, Excess2Sell, a B2B e-commerce on-line market Though e-commerce in India remains to be in its development stage and the market will evolve in its personal distinctive method, the identical holds true for the regulatory necessities as properly. As one in every of India’s main e-commerce firms within the B2B area, we hope that the Union Funds will deal with points particular to e-tailing. Presently heavy on-line discounting, predatory pricing, preferential remedy to pick sellers or monopolizing of the market is rampant and unchecked. That is creating an imbalance throughout the entire companion and success ecosystem affecting each on-line and offline B2B companies. Jayakumar Krishnaswamy, Managing Director, Nuvoco Vistas Corp Ltd We imagine the expansion of the cement {industry} shall be pushed primarily by government-led spending on large infrastructure tasks, inexpensive housing (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) and an uptick in rural housing. We count on home cement demand to develop within the vary of 8-10 % this fiscal with an enchancment in capability utilisation. The important thing expectations from the {industry} are a rationalisation of the present 28 % GST fee and introduce incentives to house builders by way of a discount in house mortgage charges to extend the consumption of cement and kickstart the economic system. Devendra Rane, Founder & CTO, Coverfox.com, on-line insurance coverage market The federal government ought to embody extra classes in SEZ, the place the nation wants to advertise entrepreneurship. Key areas being micro fintech merchandise which improve penetration to under-served India. Additionally, the Govt. ought to encourage utilization of innovative applied sciences in AI and ML the place China is taking large steps ahead. And it will be nice if the federal government removes angel tax provisions and brings transparency into the method of angel funding. Additionally, regulatory sandbox ought to permit extra variety of startups to attempt progressive and non-conventional merchandise by easing down the eligibility standards. Neetish Sarda, Founder, Smartworks, supplier of managed workspaces Amidst the rising demand for industrial actual property globally, co-working areas have emerged as a brand new asset class in industrial realty enabling a higher fluidity of area out there. For the company sector, whereas there was capital influx from traders, the convenience on Exterior Business Borrowings (ECB) would assist overseas traders acquire extra confidence out there which might end in a sustained and regular in-flow of capital from them. For co-working corporations notably like ours, we hope that the federal government will lengthen Enter Tax Credit score to the industrial section, particularly on work contracts and building companies which might assist scale back our money outflow. Likewise, maintaining a uniform company tax construction could be welcome. The federal government also needs to have a look at modifying or eliminating Angel Tax to allow extra leasing of area to small and medium-sized enterprises in addition to enhancing infrastructure in Tier 2 cities that are rising co-working hubs. Saurabh Srivastava, Chairman & Co-founder, Indian Angel Community We’re deeply appreciative of the laborious work achieved by DPIIT/CBDT and bringing out the Angel tax notification in February, which has alleviated startups’ issues to a big extent. Our expectation from the forthcoming Union Funds is additional alleviation of regulatory friction impeding the expansion of start-ups and angel traders. We hope that the Finance Ministry will take steps to align errant AOs who’re nonetheless not falling in keeping with the spirit of the notification and harassing startups. We additionally hope that the Authorities addresses the difficulty of tax authorities misusing legal guidelines akin to Part 133(6) of the Revenue Tax Act to harass traders in startups, elevating the difficulty of valuation over again. This brings to naught the sanctity of all of the laborious work achieved by DIPP and CBDT prior to now months to exempt real startups from angel tax. Furthermore, Part 56 must be eradicated fully to encourage Angel funding in MSMEs. Whereas DPIIT has uplifted start-ups in its February notification, MSMEs typically( which don’t meet the DPIIT definintion), have been neglected. Additional, we search clear messaging and simplification of govt processes from the Authorities concerning different taxes by which start-ups are normally caught up. Kamal Dutta, Managing Director-India, Skillsoft We at the moment are witnessing the fourth Industrial Revolution and with it the evolution of recent age digital applied sciences akin to Synthetic Intelligence, Machine Studying and Cloud Computing. Scarcity of those new age skillsets might be met by the govt.. creating tips for numerous industries in an effort to create obligatory studying for workers particularly within the IT, BFSI sectors. The federal government ought to present some assist within the type of incentivising firms investing within the reskilling, upskilling of their workforce for the digital age. With the scarcity of expert workforce within the deep tech sector, reskilling of workers in AI, ML, IoT will assist develop India’s IT sector and sharpen its aggressive edge amidst the altering enterprise panorama. Ishan Gupta, Managing Director, Udacity India The present authorities’s Digital India initiative has performed a pivotal position in empowering the nation with digital property. In the previous few years, we have now witnessed an exponential development within the adoption of digital platforms for training, healthcare, banking and extra. Within the upcoming funds, I count on the Finance Minister to concentrate on offering equal alternatives to the available 500 million web customers whereas additional increasing this base and the gamut of digital companies to create a thriving information economic system. The Authorities also needs to concentrate on challenges like knowledge safety to make sure a sustainable digital transformation. Sandeep Aggarwal, Founder and CEO, Droom.in Our expectations from the Union Funds 2019-20 are fairly easy. With e-commerce being one of the crucial dynamic sectors in India at current, it has change into crucial for the federal government to make the atmosphere as conducive as potential for home gamers to outlive and thrive in. The federal government also needs to make GST on e-commerce inapplicable for 5 years, together with facilitating R&D to drive improvements. Additional, there must be a single-window approval for the incorporation and institution of an organization. The capital acquire taxes have to be achieved away with. Lastly, an web firm primarily based out of India ought to be capable to checklist itself to any inventory change, and never simply the Indian one. By enterprise such initiatives, the federal government can make sure that the atmosphere turns into extremely favorable each for established in addition to rising gamers within the e-commerce {industry} throughout the nation. Sanjay Kaul, CEO, Sofyx, a social commerce platform Small retailers are pivotal to India’s economic system given the inhabitants density of cities and cities. Whereas the nation is shifting ahead quickly these retailers are being left behind. Govt must dedicate sources and implement applications to coach and digitize these outlets in order that they’ll compete in Digital India. Tens of millions of households derive their earnings from these outlets and but they’re struggling to maintain up with the altering atmosphere. Since expertise utilization is vital for retail companies right this moment, we hope that this Funds brings new initiatives aimed toward driving digital adoption and to push ahead new reforms as a part of ‘Digital India 2.0’. Juergen Hase, CEO, Unlimit, IoT service supplier The re-election of the Narendra Modi Authorities ensures steadiness of the federal government’s gripping imaginative and prescient for India to spice up the economic system and put the nation within the forefront of the expertise sector by 2030. We count on the federal government to announce a Funds that may encourage the entrepreneurial vitality within the economic system resulting in extra jobs and growth. Most startups have a variable supply of earnings and wish assist from numerous authorities sources and traders to develop and change into profitable. They gained’t have the bandwidth to handle a number of GST registrations. We’re hoping the forthcoming Union Funds will enhance the start-up eco-system by abolishing the angel tax and introducing a single GST registration. Punit Shah, Associate, Dhruva Advisors LLP Banks in India have performed an essential position in aiding the event within the nation. Thus, within the present difficult occasions, it turns into crucial to supply the required fiscal assist to the banking {industry}. One such measure might be with respect to tax deduction obtainable for NPA Provisions. Presently, the banks are allowed a deduction for provision of NPAs solely to a restricted extent. In case of many of the banks, the quantity of NPA provision made in accordance with RBI instructions far exceeds the deduction presently obtainable beneath the Revenue-tax Act,1961, which leads to disallowance of a considerable portion of the supply made for NPA. Nidhi Yadav, Inventive Head & Founder, AKS Clothings The efficiency of Indian textile and attire {industry} is linked to the efficiency of many small and medium-size companies that are distributors to large firms. They arrive within the unorganised sector, and lack of funding for easy functioning is commonly a problem to those labour-intensive firms. Within the Interim Funds, the Authorities has taken many proper choices to assist these small companies. The {industry} could be very optimistic {that a} single authority for sanctioning and processing GST refunds, which is predicted to get carried out quickly will assist eradicate present complexities within the system and profit all of the small and mid-sized firms within the {industry}. We hope extra of such pro-industry measures that will additional assist small companies in overcoming their challenges. Hemant Jalan, Managing Director, Indigo Paints With our new Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, we count on the Funds ought to consider curbing the tax burden of the low-income group. It should result in the next consumption fee, widening the horizon to the paint sector. Presently, one of many largest challenges is to maintain the grip within the rural sector which is a development driver of our {industry}. We hope that the federal government provides insurance policies that suppress the agricultural poverty concern. Additionally, we’re hopeful that the federal government takes highly effective initiatives to revive the actual property & housing sector. Being intently related to the sector, the enterprise of the paint {industry} will prosper which is able to additional present impetus to the economic system. It’s important that this funds favors the manufacturing sector. The funds must be futuristic and concentrate on implementing concrete measures to spice up client sentiment. Supply Chain Security 101: An Expert’s View
Earlier this month I spoke at a cybersecurity conference in Albany, N.Y. alongside Tony Sager, senior vice president and chief evangelist at the Center for Internet Security and a former bug hunter at the U.S. National Security Agency. We talked at length about many issues, including supply chain security, and I asked Sager whether he’d heard anything about rumors that Supermicro — a high tech firm in San Jose, Calif. — had allegedly inserted hardware backdoors in technology sold to a number of American companies.
Tony Sager, senior vice president and chief evangelist at the Center for Internet Security.
The event Sager and I spoke at was prior to the publication of Bloomberg Businessweek‘s controversial story alleging that Supermicro had duped almost 30 companies into buying backdoored hardware. Sager said he hadn’t heard anything about Supermicro specifically, but we chatted at length about the challenges of policing the technology supply chain.
Below are some excerpts from our conversation. I learned quite bit, and I hope you will, too.
Brian Krebs (BK): Do you think Uncle Sam spends enough time focusing on the supply chain security problem? It seems like a pretty big threat, but also one that is really hard to counter.
Tony Sager (TS): The federal government has been worrying about this kind of problem for decades. In the 70s and 80s, the government was more dominant in the technology industry and didn’t have this massive internationalization of the technology supply chain.
But even then there were people who saw where this was all going, and there were some pretty big government programs to look into it.
BK: Right, the Trusted Foundry program I guess is a good example.
TS: Exactly. That was an attempt to help support a U.S.-based technology industry so that we had an indigenous place to work with, and where we have only cleared people and total control over the processes and parts.
BK: Why do you think more companies aren’t insisting on producing stuff through code and hardware foundries here in the U.S.?
TS: Like a lot of things in security, the economics always win. And eventually the cost differential for offshoring parts and labor overwhelmed attempts at managing that challenge.
BK: But certainly there are some areas of computer hardware and network design where you absolutely must have far greater integrity assurance?
TS: Right, and this is how they approach things at Sandia National Laboratories [one of three national nuclear security research and development laboratories]. One of the things they’ve looked at is this whole business of whether someone might sneak something into the design of a nuclear weapon.
The basic design principle has been to assume that one person in the process may have been subverted somehow, and the whole design philosophy is built around making sure that no one person gets to sign off on what goes into a particular process, and that there is never unobserved control over any one aspect of the system. So, there are a lot of technical and procedural controls there.
But the bottom line is that doing this is really much harder [for non-nuclear electronic components] because of all the offshoring now of electronic parts, as well as the software that runs on top of that hardware.
BK: So is the government basically only interested in supply chain security so long as it affects stuff they want to buy and use?
TS: The government still has regular meetings on supply chain risk management, but there are no easy answers to this problem. The technical ability to detect something wrong has been outpaced by the ability to do something about it.
BK: Wait…what?
TS: Suppose a nation state dominates a piece of technology and in theory could plant something inside of it. The attacker in this case has a risk model, too. Yes, he could put something in the circuitry or design, but his risk of exposure also goes up.
Could I as an attacker control components that go into certain designs or products? Sure, but it’s often not very clear what the target is for that product, or how you will guarantee it gets used by your target. And there are still a limited set of bad guys who can pull that stuff off. In the past, it’s been much more lucrative for the attacker to attack the supply chain on the distribution side, to go after targeted machines in targeted markets to lessen the exposure of this activity.
BK: So targeting your attack becomes problematic if you’re not really limiting the scope of targets that get hit with compromised hardware.
TS: Yes, you can put something into everything, but all of a sudden you have this massive big data collection problem on the back end where you as the attacker have created a different kind of analysis problem. Of course, some nations have more capability than others to sift through huge amounts of data they’re collecting.
BK: Can you talk about some of the things the government has typically done to figure out whether a given technology supplier might be trying to slip in a few compromised devices among an order of many?
TS: There’s this concept of the “blind buy,” where if you think the threat vector is someone gets into my supply chain and subverts the security of individual machines or groups of machines, the government figures out a way to purchase specific systems so that no one can target them. In other words, the seller doesn’t know it’s the government who’s buying it. This is a pretty standard technique to get past this, but it’s an ongoing cat and mouse game to be sure.
BK: I know you said before this interview that you weren’t prepared to comment on the specific claims in the recent Bloomberg article, but it does seem that supply chain attacks targeting cloud providers could be very attractive for an attacker. Can you talk about how the big cloud providers could mitigate the threat of incorporating factory-compromised hardware into their operations?
TS: It’s certainly a natural place to attack, but it’s also a complicated place to attack — particularly the very nature of the cloud, which is many tenants on one machine. If you’re attacking a target with on-premise technology, that’s pretty simple. But the purpose of the cloud is to abstract machines and make more efficient use of the same resources, so that there could be many users on a given machine. So how do you target that in a supply chain attack?
BK: Is there anything about the way these cloud-based companies operate….maybe just sheer scale…that makes them perhaps uniquely more resilient to supply chain attacks vis-a-vis companies in other industries?
TS: That’s a great question. The counter positive trend is that in order to get the kind of speed and scale that the Googles and Amazons and Microsofts of the world want and need, these companies are far less inclined now to just take off-the-shelf hardware and they’re actually now more inclined to build their own.
BK: Can you give some examples?
TS: There’s a fair amount of discussion among these cloud providers about commonalities — what parts of design could they cooperate on so there’s a marketplace for all of them to draw upon. And so we’re starting to see a real shift from off-the-shelf components to things that the service provider is either designing or pretty closely involved in the design, and so they can also build in security controls for that hardware. Now, if you’re counting on people to exactly implement designs, you have a different problem. But these are really complex technologies, so it’s non-trivial to insert backdoors. It gets harder and harder to hide those kinds of things.
BK: That’s interesting, given how much each of us have tied up in various cloud platforms. Are there other examples of how the cloud providers can make it harder for attackers who might seek to subvert their services through supply chain shenanigans?
TS: One factor is they’re rolling this technology out fairly regularly, and on top of that the shelf life of technology for these cloud providers is now a very small number of years. They all want faster, more efficient, powerful hardware, and a dynamic environment is much harder to attack. This actually turns out to be a very expensive problem for the attacker because it might have taken them a year to get that foothold, but in a lot of cases the short shelf life of this technology [with the cloud providers] is really raising the costs for the attackers.
When I looked at what Amazon and Google and Microsoft are pushing for it’s really a lot of horsepower going into the architecture and designs that support that service model, including the building in of more and more security right up front. Yes, they’re still making lots of use of non-U.S. made parts, but they’re really aware of that when they do. That doesn’t mean these kinds of supply chain attacks are impossible to pull off, but by the same token they don’t get easier with time.
BK: It seems to me that the majority of the government’s efforts to help secure the tech supply chain come in the form of looking for counterfeit products that might somehow wind up in tanks and ships and planes and cause problems there — as opposed to using that microscope to look at commercial technology. Do you think that’s accurate?
TS: I think that’s a fair characterization. It’s a logistical issue. This problem of counterfeits is a related problem. Transparency is one general design philosophy. Another is accountability and traceability back to a source. There’s this buzzphrase that if you can’t build in security then build in accountability. Basically the notion there was you often can’t build in the best or perfect security, but if you can build in accountability and traceability, that’s a pretty powerful deterrent as well as a necessary aid.
BK: For example….?
TS: Well, there’s this emphasis on high quality and unchangeable logging. If you can build strong accountability that if something goes wrong I can trace it back to who caused that, I can trace it back far enough to make the problem more technically difficult for the attacker. Once I know I can trace back the construction of a computer board to a certain place, you’ve built a different kind of security challenge for the attacker. So the notion there is while you may not be able to prevent every attack, this causes the attacker different kinds of difficulties, which is good news for the defense.
BK: So is supply chain security more of a physical security or cybersecurity problem?
TS: We like to think of this as we’re fighting in cyber all the time, but often that’s not true. If you can force attackers to subvert your supply chain, they you first off take away the mid-level criminal elements and you force the attackers to do things that are outside the cyber domain, such as set up front companies, bribe humans, etc. And in those domains — particularly the human dimension — we have other mechanisms that are detectors of activity there.
BK: What role does network monitoring play here? I’m hearing a lot right now from tech experts who say organizations should be able to detect supply chain compromises because at some point they should be able to see truckloads of data leaving their networks if they’re doing network monitoring right. What do you think about the role of effective network monitoring in fighting potential supply chain attacks.
TS:  I’m not so optimistic about that. It’s too easy to hide. Monitoring is about finding anomalies, either in the volume or type of traffic you’d expect to see. It’s a hard problem category. For the US government, with perimeter monitoring there’s always a trade off in the ability to monitor traffic and the natural movement of the entire Internet towards encryption by default. So a lot of things we don’t get to touch because of tunneling and encryption, and the Department of Defense in particular has really struggled with this.
Now obviously what you can do is man-in-the-middle traffic with proxies and inspect everything there, and the perimeter of the network is ideally where you’d like to do that, but the speed and volume of the traffic is often just too great.
BK: Isn’t the government already doing this with the “trusted internet connections” or Einstein program, where they consolidate all this traffic at the gateways and try to inspect what’s going in and out?
TS: Yes, so they’re creating a highest volume, highest speed problem. To monitor that and to not interrupt traffic you have to have bleeding edge technology to do that, and then handle a ton of it which is already encrypted. If you’re going to try to proxy that, break it out, do the inspection and then re-encrypt the data, a lot of times that’s hard to keep up with technically and speed-wise.
BK: Does that mean it’s a waste of time to do this monitoring at the perimeter?
TS: No. The initial foothold by the attacker could have easily been via a legitimate tunnel and someone took over an account inside the enterprise. The real meaning of a particular stream of packets coming through the perimeter you may not know until that thing gets through and executes. So you can’t solve every problem at the perimeter. Some things only because obvious and make sense to catch them when they open up at the desktop.
BK: Do you see any parallels between the challenges of securing the supply chain and the challenges of getting companies to secure Internet of Things (IoT) devices so that they don’t continue to become a national security threat for just about any critical infrastructure, such as with DDoS attacks like we’ve seen over the past few years?
TS: Absolutely, and again the economics of security are so compelling. With IoT we have the cheapest possible parts, devices with a relatively short life span and it’s interesting to hear people talking about regulation around IoT. But a lot of the discussion I’ve heard recently does not revolve around top-down solutions but more like how do we learn from places like the Food and Drug Administration about certification of medical devices. In other words, are there known characteristics that we would like to see these devices put through before they become in some generic sense safe.
BK: How much of addressing the IoT and supply chain problems is about being able to look at the code that powers the hardware and finding the vulnerabilities there? Where does accountability come in?
TS: I used to look at other peoples’ software for a living and find zero-day bugs. What I realized was that our ability to find things as human beings with limited technology was never going to solve the problem. The deterrent effect that people believed someone was inspecting their software usually got more positive results than the actual looking. If they were going to make a mistake – deliberately or otherwise — they would have to work hard at it and if there was some method of transparency, us finding the one or two and making a big deal of it when we did was often enough of a deterrent.
BK: Sounds like an approach that would work well to help us feel better about the security and code inside of these election machines that have become the subject of so much intense scrutiny of late.
TS: We’re definitely going through this now in thinking about the election devices. We’re kind of going through this classic argument where hackers are carrying the noble flag of truth and vendors are hunkering down on liability. So some of the vendors seem willing to do something different, but at the same time they’re kind of trapped now by the good intentions of open vulnerability community.
The question is, how do we bring some level of transparency to the process, but probably short of vendors exposing their trade secrets and the code to the world? What is it that they can demonstrate in terms of cost effectiveness of development practices to scrub out some of the problems before they get out there. This is important, because elections need one outcome: Public confidence in the outcome. And of course, one way to do that is through greater transparency.
BK: What, if anything, are the takeaways for the average user here? With the proliferation of IoT devices in consumer homes, is there any hope that we’ll see more tools that help people gain more control over how these systems are behaving on the local network?
TS: Most of [the supply chain problem] is outside the individual’s ability to do anything about, and beyond ability of small businesses to grapple with this. It’s in fact outside of the autonomy of the average company to figure it out. We do need more national focus on the problem.
It’s now almost impossible to for consumers to buy electronics stuff that isn’t Internet-connected. The chipsets are so cheap and the ability for every device to have its own Wi-Fi chip built in means that [manufacturers] are adding them whether it makes sense to or not. I think we’ll see more security coming into the marketplace to manage devices. So for example you might define rules that say appliances can talk to the manufacturer only.
We’re going to see more easy-to-use tools available to consumers to help manage all these devices. We’re starting to see the fight for dominance in this space already at the home gateway and network management level. As these devices get more numerous and complicated, there will be more consumer oriented ways to manage them. Some of the broadband providers already offer services that will tell what devices are operating in your home and let users control when those various devices are allowed to talk to the Internet.
Since Bloomberg’s story broke, The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Centre, a unit of Britain’s eavesdropping agency, GCHQ, both came out with statements saying they had no reason to doubt vehement denials by Amazon and Apple that they were affected by any incidents involving Supermicro’s supply chain security. Apple also penned a strongly-worded letter to lawmakers denying claims in the story.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reporters published a follow-up story citing new, on-the-record evidence to back up claims made in their original story.
