Creator Spotlight: @jdebbiel
Deb JJ Lee is a non-binary Korean artist based in Brooklyn, NY. They have appeared in the New Yorker, New York Times, NPR, Google, Radiolab, and more. Their award-winning graphic memoir, IN LIMBO, about mental illness and difficult relationships with trauma, released in March 2023 from First Second.
Below is our interview with Deb!
Have you ever had an art block? If so, how did you overcome it?
That implies I am over my art block, but I’m still in it! I think about Kiki’s Delivery Service a lot and how she had to stop doing a thing, and that you can’t really force it, and you have to let it come back to you. It’s a pretty humbling moment, realizing there is more to life than just drawing. I’ve been trying to consume other content like reading or watching movies—anything that is not drawing-related—and to trust that it will come back to me. I think not being afraid to do the small pieces before committing to the big pieces is helpful. Because big pieces are what I am known for, I dig myself into a deeper hole, thinking that each piece has to be bigger than the last one. So yeah! Relaxing and doing the small things before overcommitting to a big piece is the best way to go about it for me.
Which 3 famous artists (dead or alive) would you invite to your dinner party?
I feel like these are all artists that I have second-degree connections with! Jillian Tamaki, Victo Ngai, and Tillie Walden would be my picks!
What are your file name conventions?
…What file name conventions? I mean, I don’t have specific file name conventions, but I actually have a public Google Drive archive! But I usually put “djjl_whatever-the-title-is_final,” and I would always know it’s the final and legit version.
What is a recent creative project that you are proud of?
I did an illustration for the whiskey brand Johnnie Walker. It’s so wild because I only had four days to finish it, and it usually takes me a week and a half if I rush. And honestly, it’s probably one of my best pieces from this year, which is funny. It was for the Mid-Autumn festival, so I made it as Korean as possible.
How has technology changed the way you approach your work?
I only use my iPad to draw everything now, and if I want to pretend that I have a steady workstation, I’ll use my Cintiq. I still am not as comfortable on the Cintiq as I am on Procreate, but it’s still pretty solid and nice. That’s the good part about technology. The bad part about technology is how AI art has been messing things up for me. I’m currently in a lawsuit about AI art as a class rep. Some of my stuff got turned into AI art late last year, so I have to give a deposition at some point.
What is a convention experience that has stuck with you?
Honestly, they’re all good! I feel like Lightbox Expo has been really nice because it’s truly been a convention for artists. I feel like that’s where most of my audience is, and they’re all around because their purpose is to be better at art. That’s where a lot of original artists do well because they’re getting art they’re inspired by, not so much fanart. I like the Lightbox Expo because it encompasses the pure love of art very well.
Top tips on setting up an Artist Alley booth?
Use a Y axis, not just your X axis! Take advantage of it! Branding is also something to think about. It is definitely something I’m getting better at. Having an assistant is also very important. I’ve also heard that 8.5x11 to 12x18 inches is usually a good size for prints, but I also provide postcard-sized prints because sometimes people don’t want to commit to a larger size.
Who on Tumblr inspires you and why?
You know this is so funny. I’ve been following @alicexz for over a decade on Tumblr and other platforms. I’ve followed her work since high school, and we’ve only recently become peers. I found her, and we met for the first time in real life, and she recognized me. And then I found all my drawings from when I was in my Alice phase, back in high school, and I was like, “Yo, this is when I was trying to be you so badly!” and she was cracking up and was like “Wow, this is so good!” It was such a sweet moment. I wanted to take a picture of her holding my drawing up. It’s really nice because now we’re peers.
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing, Deb! Be sure to check out their Tumblr blog over at @jdebbiel.

I know it’s more than six but the hyperfixation has me in its grasp sorry
Tbh I had so much fun with this one I wonder if it’s obvious which characters I like to draw the most (hint: it’s Wilbur and tinky and also kinda general macnamara he’s fun to draw. But mainly Wilbur. We need more Wilbur cross fanart.)

It is with the UTMOST pride and joy that I announce to you, the project is finally finished!!! The past four months have been VERY worth the wait. I would like to thank everyone who helped make this a reality, as you are all some of the most talented people on Earth, and I would also like to thank Team Starkid for having the amazing characters who brought it together.
For the characters who did not have full names, we had their artists name them! Those characters are:
Smoke Club Girl (tgwdlm) - Suzy English Danny (tgwdlm) - Danny Reynolds Deb (tgwdlm) - Deb Hirsch Hatchetfield Bee (tgwdlm) - Eliza Florez Ziggy (nightmare time) - Ziggy Miller Gabe (abstinence camp) - Gabe Anderson Mary (abstinence camp) - Mary Shaw Noah (abstinence camp) - Noah Henry PJ (npmd) - Patricia Johnson Reese (npmd) - Reese Woods Brenda (npmd) - Brenda Briggs Stacy (npmd) - Stacy S. I'm linking the flip book AND the slideshow versions of this project because I feel like there's an image quality difference, and I want everyone's pieces showcased in the best possible quality. In the flip book, hover your mouse off of the pages, because when you have it on the page blurs a bit.

Tony, with all his reputation as a playboy billionaire, is a little slow on the uptake. Natasha noticed this shortly after moving in with the team. He was genuinely unaware of the way ladies would drag their sunglasses down to their nose just to see the swing of his hips or the slow roll of his shirt sleeves. Pepper, despite their mutually thought break up, still drools a little when Tony's nimble fingers work the tie loose. And yeah, Nat wouldn't say no to a wild weekend away with the genius on a secluded cabin on the hill—doing nasty, nasty things to that tush.
But nothing compares Tony's oblivious nature when it comes to the men around him.
The way he drives Tiberus Stone crazy during the Met Gala, wearing a corset that's tight enough to give Victorian Era ladies a run for their money. The way one of the military brats shamelessly stares at his throat, licking his lips and subtly adjusting his pants. The way Barnes whines when Tony comes out of the armor, wearing the tight-just right-flight suit. The way Steve punches a hole in the refridgerator when he sees his shirt sitting loose on Tony's bare chest. (Apparently Tony and Nat are the resident clothing thieves. She doesn't disagree because Bruce's shirts and Clint's jackets look good on her.)
She sees it while tracing the spots on her mug. The resident genius billionaire is listing sideways, on the verge of falling off his perch on the counter top—because normal seats are for losers, he said. His head bumps on the shelving unit above and he mutters a curse, stretches his arm up to swat at it like it's a fly. But her attention catches at the stillness of two super soldiers staring at the patch of skin—a tiny sliver around the waist, the curve of the hip bone winking at them.
Tony yawns, jumps down to the floor and the loosely fitted sweats slide an inch below their designated spot. Something cracks and Nat watches them—the two Brooklyn boys pushing away their broken chopsticks and slowly, with the stillness of a pack of predators, rising up from their seats.
"I'm gonna go upstairs, use my bed for once," Tony tells them and sends Nat a slow smile. A knowing one.
He swings his hips around, humming an off beat tune and doesn't bother checking his own disheveled state of clothes.
It takes them all a moment to understand, and then Steve and Barnes are racing out of the kitchen after him, only to have the elevator doors slam on their faces.
Huh.
Looks like Tony might not be so oblivious after all.

So I'm very much on the fence about AI art stuff, and know you are a bit outspoken on it. Was wondering your position on the writer and actor's strikes - they *are* fighting against the technology pretty unilaterally, but they are also doing so to protect their livelihoods against corporate interests and aren't talking about banning it entirely, just adopting some industry standards on it. Curious to hear your thoughts on the matter.
the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are not specifically about AI, but primarily about wages and residuals on streaming platforms. that said, their AI stances are obviously correct and i support them.
in fact, notably, WGA's stance is pretty opposite to what a lot of anti-AI posters keep insisting: one of their major victories against studios is an agreement that if a writer works on a script created by a large language model, they get a full writing credit and the LLM can't be credited as a writer in its own right. the position that "AI art has no human input" is ironically exactly what big corporations want to be the case legally, so that they don't have to credit or owe royalties to artists who work in production pipelines involving AI.
SAG's contention is similarly specific: they are against AI being used to replace actors by imitating their likenesses or voice, and specifically against contracts that give studios such a right becoming industry standard.
both of these positions are 1. being pursued by organized industrial action, instead of by individuals Posting and 2. to do with specific exploitative applications of AI as implemented into corporate production pipelines, not broad abstract questions of What Art Is or personal level use, which is what separates them from the "anti AI" movement as represented by the people clogging my inbox
