are you thinking about how ruths fantasising about life as a 40 year old mother because that mother wouldve lived a life. wouldve been a star at some point. but now shes dimmed and caved in.

and ruth feels like she already got to that part. shes only a teenager but she thinks shes there already. she reached her peak long ago, but she can fantasise about a life lived to the fullest before plateauing like she feels she already has. and considering what follows her song, shes right.

i will never be done defending just for once as one of the best songs ive heard from starkid so far. ive flipped through a few of the older non hatchetfield musicals and its STILL towards the top of my list. maybe its because shes ME in another world. if id switched schools earlier, or been "too gay" or "too smart" for the boys in fifth grade. if my shoulder had never healed and i had to quit dance years too early. just for once is a gorgeous, incredible representation of what it feels like to watch everything, even your own life, happen, watch it all from the outside, and never be able to take charge of it.

as much as i love the idea of the lords in black all having their favourite kiddos and pokey liking ruth the most, i feel like it'd make more sense for him to just,,, really hate her. she doesn't pose a challenge with her wants- she wants a girlfriend, a boyfriend, anyone. ruth wants attention, both in life and onstage, that's what all of 'just for once' is all about. and what does pokey himself love? attention. he's the singular voice: he wants to join the world in a hivemind he controls, not a drop of individuality because they all share one voice. his voice. ruth desperately wants her voice to be heard, but pokey wants his own to control all. still though, i keep imagining them exchanging their thoughts on musicals in the black & white after she dies.
