this took a while bc i keep screaming but LET ME TELL U:

do not. even get me started on how fiercely protective they would be of each other after knowing what they’ve each been through, how lost and terrible it feel to not know exactly where home is (or have it ripped away from you)

zoya learned it the hard way, but she knows what it is to have the only home you have taken so abruptly, to lose that comfort in having a place to belong. she thought it was in the little palace, but she never fully fathomed it was with her aunt who perished on the fold, the only aunt who saw her, really saw her, and loved her for every rough edge, every failure, every broken piece of her past.

genya learned it the earliest, from her poor attempts at being a corpoalki or materialki, she had never found her place. and even though TD had seemingly “given her” one at the queen’s side (and later, the king’s bedside, which is fucking disgusting), she’s unhappy. she’s a grisha among the company of otkazat’sya who objectify her.

they’re all looking for places to belong, y’know? i’d imagine being raised at the little palace would never be enough to fill that emptiness. after all, genya and zoya wouldn’t have to fight so hard to feel like they belonged if the feeling was already there to begin with.

and alina! alina, who was orphaned so young, who thought her only home was a boy who would never look at her the way she looked at him, who lost her home and found herself torn. if she was too odd to be otkazat’sya and too special to be grisha, where did that put her?

BUT THEY FIND IT. THEY FIND HOME. IN EACH OTHER.

zoya, who—at first—felt both jealous AND empathetic of alina, only now feels some regret she had chosen to act on jealousy instead of empathy. she begrudges alina (and genya) as much kindness as she can muster, however rough it might appear. zoya, being zoya, is not soft, and slowly, her bark starts lacking bite.

genya, being genya, finds joy in pushing zoya’s buttons, and slowly, it grows into fondnesss, into friendship, into love.

alina, being alina, tries to play peacemaker, but slowly, she grows out of that, too. she’d much rather sit back and laugh, with fondness and teasing, because they’ve been through so much, and it means the world to her to see the girls she loves just… be happy.

but it’s slow-coming, and it wasn’t always this way.

it starts out with zoya growing to respect the way they fight, despite how it was different from the way she waged her battles. she was a brilliant grisha in the traditional sense of brute strength and skill, but she was groomed raised to believe she was superior to people like genya, who was neither corporalki nor materialki, who had chosen to serve an otkazat’sya queen and king instead of finding purpose in the second army, or alina, who didn’t earn her place and was simply given it, who was favored and sought after without even trying.

it starts with genya seeing that zoya does care, that she’s a little selfish but plenty passionate about the people, grisha and otkazat’sya alike. it starts with alina seeing they have more in common than they thought, that she is every bit as hard and prickly as she appears but it never means she doesn’t care.

it ends with tucking away the hair falling in front of her face, with a kiss to the forehead to ward away the nightmares, with sunlight streaming through open windows, with coming to the girls you love at the end of the day.
