I need your help...

If you don't know me, hello, I'm Accalia, I go by Tali Sidekick online on Youtube, Instagram, and on the rarest of occasions Twitch. I'm a 29 year old transgender woman from Canada, who came out and began socially and medically transitioning in 2021. I stream largely on Youtube and on the rare occasion I make videos (it's been over a year since I last did that).

I could use your help affording my legal name change. I've been trying to afford it myself but I'm unable to for reasons I'll get into below. The link is in my blog description, but I'll post it here:

Recently, while walking home from work (I don't make enough to afford public transit or my own vehicle or a bicycle) I got attacked by a middle-aged man in a dimly lit residential neighbourhood. I got away, and thankfully I didn't give him enough time to do more than grab me by the arm. However, I had to file a police report, which gave me two options: use my legal name which at current is my deadname (ie. a name I no longer wish to use) which would be distressing to say the least, or submit it anonymously. I chose the latter which unfortunately does little besides let the public know that someone dangerous with a vague description is in their area. I wish I could have put my name on that report but using my legal name as it stands now is ... I can't.

To add to this, I was saving up, but unfortunately the student loans I owe decided to charge me during an appeal process (they weren't supposed to) and when the charge partially bounced they denied my appeal (which isn't supposed to happen under the contract agreement I signed) because of "outstanding payments". The appeal process also only looked at my gross income for one month, specifically the month I got paid 3 times in (it happens only once a year) and decided to combine all three payments into an equal 2 and evaluated my paycheck at around 25/hr when I only make 16/hr and has thus denied me reduced loans payment (I'm working on this but it's adding to my stress). So at current, the $300 I had extra got eaten by the National Student Loans Services Centre (NSLSC) again and from previous experience even though I should be reimbursed once this is cleared up, I won't be.

I would have also had more (remember that extra third paycheck?) but my health insurance stopped covering me because despite being signed up to a provincial pharmacy program they decided I wasn't, and forced me to buy my hormones and ADHD meds out of pocket. They only -just- reinstated coverage, but getting reimbursed will take over a month possibly 2.

As such, I have exactly $48 in savings and $7 in my basic checking account.

I want to get my name changed, I've been trying for over 2 years, and it's been impossible. Every time I have the money to spare, the NSLSC eats it and doesn't give it back, some medical thing comes up, or some unforseen cost rears its head and consumes my meager savings. The cost averages out to about $450 because it requires Finger Printing for a background check, Notary Fees, Processing Fees, and Reprinting Fees for my Birth Certificate, Drivers License, and Marriage License.

And if the $450 goal is exceeded, any excess getsput towards affording the $6000 surgery cost of getting SRS/GRS (Sex Reassignment Surgery/Gender Reassignment Surgery). I have until December next year before my government will no longer cover the cost of the surgery supposedly.

If I can get help here, I really want all my legal doccuments to read "Llorelei Accalia [Lastname]". I'm so tired of having to explain to people that I'm transgender because the name, face, and (somehow) voice don't match.

How to get free cell phone service if you're in the States

Edit: as of April 2024 the FCC has passed a bill that will terminate the Affordable Connectivity Program. This program is different from Lifeline, which is what this post is referencing. But it is still connected to the same issues of affordable and accessible Internet and communication for low income and disabled families. Here is a petition you can sign to help stop this from happening.

This is not a scam. This is a government program called Lifeline. You do have to qualify based on income, and there are some limitations to how you can qualify. I'll get into it below. But if you get Medicaid, food stamps, or SSI then you automatically qualify.

Who can apply:

- low income households

- if you receive Section 8, SNAP, Medicaid, or SSI

- if you receive Veterans & Survivors Pension benefits

- if you live on Tribal lands

Documents needed:

- photo ID/proof of ID (SSN, birth certificate, etc)

- proof of citizenship

- proof of address

- proof of income

- proof of assistant programs

- a physical address on file

- an email address

How to apply:

- the process is done online via the National Verifier Website

- okay so look, this website looks sketchy as hell, alright? I don't know why but it seems like all official govt websites have this 90's Dial Up "Win A Free iPod" aesthetic and it drives me nuts. I swear to God they're not phishing for your info. You can read the FCC guidelines for how this program works here.

- you'll need to make an account

- you can take photos of your documents and upload them directly to the website, or you can make copies and mail them to the address listed on the website

- they will email you when they've processed the info

- if approved then you can sign up for your phone provider

- providers vary from state to state. You'll get options like Q-Link Wireless, Safe Link, etc. You can pick whichever one is available in your area.

Extra info:

- Only 1 Lifeline benefit per household

- You can also apply for the Affordable Connectivity Program which gives you a very nifty discount on your Internet bill.

- you do need to reapply every year to keep your service going. They will send you an email when its time to do so.

- the phones you can choose from are cheap smartphones, but they do come preset for Internet, wifi, streaming, video calls, apps, etc.

- you can buy other phones than the one they give you for free. You can even bring your own phone & just change service providers, which will give u a new SIM & number.

- if you go with the standard free smart phone, just know they're kinda ditzy on durability. Usually I need to replace my battery once a year, which you can do easily on the website. You can get replacement SIM cards sent for free, but if you need a replacement phone or battery then they will charge you for it.

- replacement phones start at $30 for the standard. Which is currently the Samsung Hot Pepper Serrano. This is the one I'm using, it's nice tbh. I can never set the wallpaper though, it resets to factory default whenever I turn my phone off 😭

- the service can be kinda shitty in terms of roaming & out of area service. Sometimes when I go like two cities over I lose service. I think the provider depends on your area (mine goes through Sprint). So keep that in mind.

- but if you're in need of a phone? Bingo. Bada bing bada boom. It's not the iPhone X, but hey, it works.

Getting around the physical address limitations:

So obviously this program would be amazing for homeless & unsheltered people to utilize. The problem is that you need a physical address on file. This is for many reasons, one- to ship your phone to you, two- so they can keep track of your household benefits, etc.

There is no sure fire way to get around this, but there are instances where some work arounds might be able to work for you.

Up first, obviously, if you have contact with anyone who can loan you their physical address for the sole purpose of applying & getting your phone shipped, that would be ideal. You can change your address once you get the phone delivered.

But that's a bit tricky when you don't have anyone to help out with this.

Instead what I've seen people do is to contact your local Post Office, your local Food Banks, and your local Public Service stations, and ask to use their physical address. The phone can be shipped there and you can present your ID to pick it up.

But, this is solely dependent on if any of these places agree to help and also if Lifeline hasn't fixed or addressed this issue yet, because sometimes they will pick up on addresses that are recognized as places of business.

So please be cautious of this.

Unfortunately I haven't seen any other work arounds that have been successful as of yet.

The One Direction to F1 Pipeline and Fan Culture

In contemporary fan spaces, we could make hundreds of connections between being a fan of X and becoming a fan of Y.

One Direction to Marvel (could also be 1D to MCU to F1)

Harry Potter to Game of Thrones

Disney to HBO

Gossip Girl to Marvel

The possibilities of making connections are endless.

However, to understand fan culture in spaces like Twitter (it will actually pain me to write X so it's Twitter) as we progress beyond just sports culture, we just need to look at the One Direction to F1 pipeline.

One Direction, despite only being a band for like five years and going on "hiatus" in January 2016, changed fandom forever and was a formative experience for so many current F1 fans under 30. Being a fan of One Direction has ingrained a fan culture within our zeitgeist.

While One Direction may not have a presence in fan spaces anymore, the behaviors that we learned from that period are still very much present.

So what behaviors of 1D fan culture are present in F1 fan culture?

Hacking security cameras and knowing things we probably shouldn't:

Now, am I in support of this? Not at all. I don't think you should be hacking and essentially stalking drivers or any celebrities, but that's a discussion for a different time.

But if anyone was even slightly aware of One Direction at their prime in the early 2010s, then you know that there was little that Directioners were not able to hack. (cough birth certificates and hospital records cough).

We can see that same behavior, especially when it comes to Charles Leclerc. Footage of him purchasing a suitcase was leaked. His address was leaked and fans showed up at his doorstep.

Which just reminds me of a story Louis once told where he tweeted about not having milk and some fan dropped off milk at his doorstep.

You can't have a favorite/You can't hate someone:

In hindsight, I think we can all agree that this idea was mostly promoted due to purchasing power.

There were five dolls for the five members. If you were a Harry girlie, you'd buy the Harry doll. If you were a Zayn girlie, you'd buy the Zayn doll and so on. However, the issue with this was that the Harry and Zayn dolls were flying off the shelf, you'd be hard-pressed to find them. The Niall and Louis girlies, while less than the Harry and Zayn girlies, were dedicated to Niall and Louis. Leaving the Liam dolls all alone on the shelves...

So, the you can't hate one member and be a true Directioner narrative was created.

And if you've spent even a few moments on f1twt, you'll be able to see a similar narrative in F1.

If you hate a driver or criticize them, then there's a high chance that at least a few people will call you a fake fan. Or you can't be a Ferrari fan if you like Charles and hate Carlos (or vice versa). Or how are you going to the paddock when you criticized one driver the previous year when they weren't on the team (iykyk).

But, I find this a bit disingenuous. Unlike One Direction, which was a band, F1 is a sport. You can have a favorite and dislike someone else. Criticism is actually a good thing (as long as you're not being hateful for no reason).

Fan Projects and Involvement/Analysis:

One Direction fans were known for the projects they had and for getting involved.

With F1, especially this year, there were the friendship bracelets. While popularized this year by Taylor Swift, is like the fan projects that we would see in the One Direction era.

Other aspects of this include looking at the driver onboards and making sure that information is shared online with others and analyzed.

Commentary and race direction don't focus on every single driver's race and often times things are missed or ignored. Fans looking through the data, videos, and everything else help shed light on how individual races went and correct public narratives. It's double checking if there was damage, impeding, driver error, car problems, etc.

Daniel's onboards and data from Austin and Brazil come to mind. Without that information, those wouldn't be considered great races for him. He was finishing behind his teammate. But onboards from Austin revealed that he had debris stuck in his front wing, which hadn't been mentioned by race commentators. In Brazil, while a lap down, he spent most of the race right behind Yuki playing the team game. If you didn't see the data, then you wouldn't know that's where he was on track or that he was 3rd fastest.

I would relate this to the fan projects centered around Louis, Niall, and Liam. Those were always about correctly attributing credit and giving attention to them when the media was focused on Harry and Zayn.

Making It Your Own:

There's no question that if you're a fan, you're going to want merch to support your favorites.

However, it's usually not so great.

One Direction fans were creating their own shirts and other items because not everyone wanted to walk around wearing a "Mrs. Styles" t-shirt or one with the album cover. Fan-created merch was filled with cool designs for clothing, custom shot glasses, posters, etc.

In F1, not only is most of the team merch filled with sponsors, but it's also insanely expensive. (I might love it, but I'm not spending $200 for a cardigan.)

Fans create a diverse and creative range of merch that is affordable. Fun t-shirts, stickers, jackets, posters, etc.

At the core essence of being a fan, is taking something and making it your own. Especially when it comes to bad, expensive merch (what was that 10 in a row shirt for Max???? or just about any team shirt with the hundred sponsors they have) and good, expensive merch (Daniel needs to stop putting out enchante collections. I am a grad student, I cannot keep affording them.)

College packing tips, because I have ✨opinions✨

This isn’t gonna be all inclusive instead just a list of thing to think about that might not be on a standard list

It got really long so I added a read more lol

long and the short of it is consider if you can buy it easily from college if you aren't gonna need it right away, that way you keep down on bringing so much stuff

but also if it is gonna make you happy, honestly do bring it. like college is different enough, you can keep some things the same

Most college beds are extra long, so don't get the wrong sheets

mattress toppers are godsends imo but they can be expensive so don't stress too much about it if u can't

on that note i also adore my ugg comforter its so damn soft

Bring the documents you might need to get a job! If you have a passport this is the best choice because it is the most easily replaceable, but a (certified) copy of your birth certificate *and* your social security card also works (you need both)— obviously not everyone works in college but it’s still good to have the option

Check the I9 list online if you’re not sure what counts

Yes you should bring a little set of tupperware and a single set of dishes/silverware — sometimes you just wanna make ramen or order takeout whatnot so it’s nice to have some containers

On that note, I would pick a little electric kettle over a microwave or a fridge— it’s cheap, not a fire hazard like a microwave (check your college’s rules! some are fine with it some aren’t) and you can make all sorts of stuff with boiling water—namely, ramen and hot chocolate/tea

If you don’t like the 50 cent ramen they have slightly more expensive ramen that I do think is better— personal choice tho you do you

Some dorms have stuff you can use/share and some don’t, so it might be better to hold off on buying some things until you get there—my dorm has a communal vacuum, kitchen and box of trash bags, for example

If you wanna be the og, after you put up a command hook for your coat by/on the door, leave it there for the next person. Or don’t, you do you.

Don’t forget an umbrella. Pref one that shrinks down and has a little strap for your wrist

If you use wooden pencils, you also need a pencil sharpener. Battery operated little ones usually aren’t too expensive

Bring meds like Tylenol, Advil, cough drops, prob mucinex, and neosporin, and share them if people ask (don’t forget prescriptions too!) — however, if you’re looking to pack light, you can also just buy them at a cvs or walgreens as needed (but remember, if you’re in quarantine that may be harder than u think)

HDMI cord (and adapter if you’re a stinky MacBook user) (that is a joke, MacBook users are not stinky) so that you can attach your computer to monitors, tvs and the like (I wouldn’t buy a new one just for college tho, just pack one if you’ve got a spare)

Paper towels. Can also buy these when there tho, just nice to have

Tissues. Same as above.

A laundry hamper that you can carry with you down to the washing machines all in one go (don’t get like a hamper and a bag, for example cause you’re not gonna want to do that transfer). I would also recommend something that only holds one load of laundry if you’re only ever gonna do one load at a time, and that it is small enough to fit under the bed

I like tide pods cause they’re idiot proof, but that’s a personal preference.

The next few bullets are gonna be about cold weather shit, because I go to school in New Hampshire but live in Virginia— therefore there was quite a difference in winter temperatures — these only apply if you’re also going somewhere hella cold

You might not need your heavy duty coat until after thanksgiving but you should have a coat or layers that are warm enough to tolerate down to like 30 even before thanksgiving

My coat complement was as follows: one thin pullover, one sweatshirt, one waist-length Patagonia that was pretty good in a lot of temps, one knee length Patagonia with a hood that is very very warm.

With these, I would usually wear the waist length Patagonia down to 30, double with the sweatshirt down to 25, and switch over to the knee length below that. If you’re not in the cold for very long the waist length will do without the sweatshirt until as low as 20 if you walk fast and have accessories

Speaking of accessories, you need a nice hat and some gloves. I personally liked the fairly thin driving style gloves for most everyday stuff, because you could actually do things with them and they were pretty much enough for most activities unless you were literally playing in the snow

These made every coat so much warmer.

Shop for coats in the summer when they’re on sale and search around— they don’t need to break the bank but I would opt to splurge on this over pretty much anything else specifically for the knee length coat. You can also layer more tho if yours isn’t as warm, and that works too!

I wore a mask outside instead of a scarf cause that was easier but that’s personal preference

I don’t really go out so this doesn’t apply to me really but lots of people have a “fracket” — a cheaper jacket meant to be used between parties that you don’t care if it gets stolen as much

If you see people wearing Canada goose jackets they are insanely rich. Keep that in mind when meeting people who may otherwise seem mostly normal. (No, not all rich people are assholes but it’s something to keep in mind)

Don’t forget to bring warm weather clothes for the start tho!! It’ll still be warm in September and buildings up here don’t always have AC

Yes, bring your stuffed animals. If your roommate judges you they can fuck off and mind their own business.

Shoes: similarly based on it being cold and snowy as hell in the winter, may not apply

A pair of comfy hiking boots/shoes will probably be more useful than straight snow boots on most days, though if you have those you can def bring after thanksgiving/christmas

Hiking boots are the second thing I’d recommend you splurge on for high quality if you can

However, while nature works hard, northern snowplows on golf carts work harder so usually you won’t be literally trudging through snow unless it’s actively snowing. They plow the sidewalks too here usually, which is why you can get by without snow boots if you want

You do need some kind of comfy everyday shoe that is both waterproof and non-slip tho because there will be ice

Speaking of which, if it is below freezing that is not a puddle. You should not remotely trust any wet spots on the pavement or you *will* end up immediately on your ass.

Otherwise, bring flip flops, sneakers and dress shoes if you have them (for the few times you will need to dress up, or if you wanna make a less dressy outfit immediately a little more formal)

You shouldn’t need to buy anything new tho just bring the shoes you have/wear at home

Oh and shower shoes. Spend like zero dollars on them tho

I have generally not needed a tv tho I do have a second monitor for my laptop (those are usually cheaper than tvs) which was a godsend when we were semi-virtual my freshman year but doesn’t get used as often now

Don’t buy the books until after you start your classes but also check the library (online and physical) because sometimes they have them available for free

Actually before buying any piece of media (movies and whatnot included) check to see if they have it first, some schools have a movie library or even video games and consoles

Not related to what to bring but after you finish your classes leave an honest description of them on rate my professor or the college-specific review website—and use those websites when choosing classes too

However, remember that people are more likely to leave reviews when things go badly, so especially take things like evaluations of niceness of the prof with a grain of salt

Instead, look at workload, style of the class, content, etc to see if it lines up with what you assumed from the course description, and then go from there.

Generally assume that there is no such thing as a truly easy class, so searching for only the easy classes won’t really get you anywhere. Things are easier when you actually like the content, usually.

You don’t need as many school supplies as you did in high school— if you write notes for every class you’ll need a notebook for each, some pencils/whatever tools you usually use to take the notes, and maybe like one folder or binder to leave in your dorm for printouts and whatnot

If you want to print every reading ever you might need another binder, but wait to buy that until you’re actually doing the readings because that depends a lot on the class

Speaking of which you do need a backpack for college but def make sure it’s the right size for that updated list of supplies ^^^ mine was way too big and I was gifted a smaller one so that’s what I use, you do you

Art currently is my full-time job as I take care of a 92 yr old woman. I live with 2 men who don't have jobs. (one moved out but back in after getting fired because of racism) and the other is disabled. Btw I am paying for everything with the money I make online which is NOT MUCH.

I need to ask because I don't have money so I can survive, I open commissions and adopts constantly so there isn't always asking.

I don't know dude capitalism sucks, I wouldn't even be having this stupid post rn if I had an SSC, and that's an entire fiasco rn because I can't even get it without an ID. :') and guess what you can't get without an SSC? An ID. Until I get food stamps figured out and an ID. I'm stuck.

I'd quick art/the internet if I had a job rn.

I don't have a social security card anymore (looked everywhere for it), I don't have an active state ID, and I need to get a social security card that I need to get an ID. can't use my birth certificate to get it. So without the ID and SSC, I can't get food stamps to just buy food.

Like I've mentioned I was abused and starved. I'm taking care of said person cause she's 92 and I live with her and she can barely walk 5 inches without falling.

My family that lives close enough does not help financially at all. like shit, they let me be homeless for a year and STILL starved me and abused me when I did move back. WHICH I HAD MOVED OUT FOR ORIGINALLY.

Also, no one is obligated to help and rarely does help. I get most of my help from friends and my partner at this point. I of course can't rely on them constantly, so I have this post if people wanna help and I open commissions when I'm not busy or going through it emotionally/mentally, or physically. (cause I do have health problems)
