FOR THE MAN WHO WEARS HIS HEART ON HIS SLEEVES.
// @scarlxtleaves / @thuganomxcs / @peoplcshope

{{ Happy Birthday, you fuckin' fucker! (I say this with love). I remember when I first came to the DBZ RPC months ago and I was so shy I didn't know how to communicate properly. People scared me. Following people scared me. People following me back scared me. I was freakin' scared of EVERYTHING. I even unfollowed a person I followed (and then followed them back when they checked in with me) because I realized how bad that looked/how problematic it could be if I didn't address it. I felt so bad, and I still do sometimes. I'm so glad that mutual was understanding and patient with me, aaaaaaaa. Needless to say, ya girl had SO many issues in the beginning. I was a HOT MESS. Hell, I didn't even have all of my muse info up but you didn't give a shit about none of that. You just took one look at my blog, saw 'despot of the universe' on my header and said 'LET IT RIP' like Beyblade. DUDE, you were ballsy as fuck and I'm so glad for that! You gave me my first ever starter here!!! THAT made me remember you! Everytime I logged in, it was to respond to our Future Gohan/Maiz fight thread. (I'm actually looking for it now because that's gonna be something I continue after I reply to someone else first 👀). You're one of the first people I ever plotted with too, even if that intimidated me a little. I mean, granted it was after you gave me the starter because I was freaking worried about everything, which was why I was all over your inbox, "okay, so she can do this and that...", "i have no problem with them having this sort of dynamic", etc. Gosh, you were overwhelmingly sweet and kind to me and I appreciate that. I know this is not something I should apologize for, but I'm still sorry that I scared you slightly when I changed my username to acoldsovereign from maizthefemalesaiyan, and didn't tell you in advance. I didn't realize you wouldn't recognize me so I had to put the former name in my old promo post. YOU'RE why I did that. I didn't know what other accounts you had and I just wanted to let you know it was meeeeeeee! ;w; But then you forgot your password to the blog so we couldn't even communicate anyway! One thing I will say-- it is funny I recently posted about Toriyama and Future Trunks and what the latter means to me because guess what blog I found you on. Guess what reunited us. Yeah.
FUTURE TRUNKS.
YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN?????? That man is always doing something for me! You would've thought he was REAL. But anyway, it was so cool to have you back on my dash again! It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize who it was. I saw the name "Jay" on your promo post and it didn't cross my mind it was you, man. Not until I went down the blog and saw the writing style matched up. Remember how I just burst into your inbox and made some noise? And then you realized it was me? That shit was hilarious. We were so happy to see each other. Everything's been smooth sailing since then and we've created so many cursed memes, threads, jokes and storylines. Dude, we fuckin' made Rengakura. That little psychopath LOL. Well, moreso I made him but your response to that thread in particular made it so that he didn't come out any worse than he could've. Damn you for having Trunks make the right decision! (Again, I say this with love). At least in one verse, Trunks finally gets a happy-ish ending though. He lives with his mostly mellowed-out/former-tyrant for a wife and a pseudo-sane Saiyan-hybrid child on a spaceship, having space adventures. 🥺 Papa Trunks isn't something I knew I needed until I got it so thank you. I also did not know Maiz was actually capable of chilling the eff out-- THAT was a surprise to me. The fact that she's actually a decent mother is hilarious, considering all the fucked up stuff she's done before without blinking an eye. I also love how through our threads, you can see how she naturally came to care for him, even if she's sadistic and still messes with him from time to time. One of my favorites scenes with them unironically was when she offered to take Trunks to a tropical planet for his birthday. She was actually affectionate towards him the proper way more or less, but he didn't realize it because he was so used to her being busy/selfish/frosty/teasing. Bro thought he was dying. That was tragically sad yet funny all at once. I'd say more but this is already a lot and you already know how I feel about your Yusuke and our favorite assassin, Sanosuke.
Long story short- thank you for warmly welcoming me into this small, but chill RPC. I'll always love and appreciate you.
Happy birthday, Jaybird.

To those who do know me!
"Where were you?" Tumblr culture got really scary and toxic around the time when geopolitical events got more violent and horrific. A wave of Islamophobia and antisemitism made it to much for me to handle seeing it every day. So I took a break. (Free Palestine btw).
Also on top of that I wanted to focus more on college and I was gaining a bad habit of looking for things to make me upset as a distraction from bigger things in my life.
Also, because I was healing a LOT of baggage from my past started affecting me mentally. Thankfully I'm mostly ok now and working on making my life a happier and safer one. As well as protecting those I care about.
"What are you going to do now?"
I'm still not giving up on art or music. But I'll also do some photography on here too. I'm more open to posting and talking about my OCs on here so go crazy asking about them. I'll also post my doodles and art studies here for archival. Stay tuned!!
Tumblr media
One thing I would request is for minors to not follow this blog. Although I won't be doing straight up NSFW here, the themes I tackle like violence, trauma and personal mental anguish will be expressed in a way not suitable for children to consume. Proper trigger warnings will also be applied for any onlookers.
IF I FORGET TO TAG SOMETHING PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP AND I'LL FIX IT!!!
Also, I'm not always the best with social cues or knowing certain things before hand, so if I screw up please also tell me.
-----
Things I would love to talk about
History
Dragon Ball
Music composition and Theory
Photography
Animation
Well that's all for now. I'll edit this should something new come up!!
Thanks for reading all the way through!!

The amount of casual ageism in fandoms is so gross.
"Oh you're a young boy and you like barbie and my little pony? Good for you! It's about time we break gender norms!"
"You're an adult male and you like my little pony and barbie? Ew!!! You're clearly a massive creep and a p*do just by existing! Go die in a hole!"
"You're a young girl and like action figures DBZ? Good for you! Be a strong young lady!"
"You're an adult woman and you like action figures and DBZ? Omg, you're such a loser/fake fan! Get a life you poser! You're clearly just a (insert transphobic slur)!"
"I'm allowed to criticize whatever I want! Nothing is free from criticism!"
"Pfft, come ooonnnn. You can't criticize that movie too harshly. It's for kids! Everyone knows kids don't deserve quality entertainment like us grown adults!"

I hate that things have gone from "be careful on the internet, don't give out any personal information, and there's gonna be some stuff you won't want to see so just do your best to avoid it" to "the internet is my playground, I can go where I want and do what I want and if I see anything I don't like it's YOUR fault, these content warnings can't stop me because I can't read, here's my carrd where i dox myself by listing more information about myself than anyone would ever need to know" and it's just…accepted as okay and normal? Keep your private information private, you don't owe strangers ANY information, but also just stay AWAY from places where you're not comfortable, especially if you're underage (DON'T go to 18+ websites and demand that they bend to your whims) though there are definitely also adults who need to hear it too. Strangers online aren't responsible for your comfort.

A lot of people don’t seem to realise that when we talk about fiction not effecting reality, we mean that it’s not a 1-to-1 type thing— an author killing off a character is different from them murdering an actual person, people can enjoy dark content in fiction & fantasy without thinking it’s good/wanting it to happen irl, and of course fiction can never truly make someone do something— if a murderer is inspired by a fictional murder, they still chose to kill someone and can’t blame the writer for that. The same with unhealthy relationships in fiction— so long as young people are taught about healthy relationships they’ll understand what they’re reading about isn’t one, and if not, that’s a failing on their guardians not the writer.

JK Rowling is criticised for claiming Dumbledore and Grindlewald were gay but only showing them interacting platonically. Neil Gaiman claims Aziraphale and Crowley are “a love story” but only shows them interacting platonically, and is adored for it. I’m sorry, but that is a double standard caused by the popularity of the author.

My #1 post of 2022
not submission. I really hate the "My OC, my rules" thing. Cause like, no? Just because they are your oc doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with them. If you want to make your oc suffer and not like them get help, you deserve to lose rights over them. Especially if you only do that stuff to purposely trigger people. Once you do that, your oc no longer belongs to you. they belong to the public who will take better care of them instead
Making a comment to get this to post.

Nanwum VII Update: 72,197
I'm starting to run out of gas, which is probably not a big deal since I already cleared 50k, but this bears out my whole strategy of building an early lead. My intention was to pull down 2k per day from the 13th to the end of the month, and I'm still on track, but on the 14th I fell a little behind and only got to 1709. It's not a problem, since I got caught up, but I need to be careful from here if I want to make it to 100k. Not that I need 100k, but I like bragging rights.
To reward myself for the insane wordcounts I put in earlier this month, I decided to watch all of the recent DBZ review videos that TotallyNotMark put up. You know, the ones with the new Team Four Star DBZA clips in them. I'd already watched the "Buu Bits" in a separate compilation video, but now I'm finally checking out the review and...
I don't know, there's a lot of good material in these things. The editing is top notch, and you could play these videos with the sound off and still enjoy it just as an hours-long DBZ highlight reel. And Mark has a lot of salient insights on the series. I particularly liked his analysis of Gohan and Videl's dynamic, and it's also refreshing to see a DBZ fan who, you know, actually likes the show. Like, he's gushing over Vegeta's character arc, or talking about how great the androids and Cell are without a bunch of qualifiers, and it's just refreshing to see that.
That having been said, the writing for these videos often ends up sounding like this:
Tumblr media
Like, arguably, you can't do a six-hour review of a cartoon show without being a little pretentious, but there's sentences in these videos where it feels like YouTube is paying Mark by the word.
Also, he tends to make these off-the-cuff style remarks, like he's discussing creative decisions about making the video in the video. I get that too. I write my blog with that same stream-of-consciousness energy, because I really am making this up as I go. It's a blog, there's not gonna be a second draft. But he's doing a YouTube video, and there's a lot of production values involved and the work is pretty polished. I don't think it makes a lot of sense for him to talk about how the sausage is made. Just give me the sausage, which is footage of the cartoon with a guy telling me what he liked about it.
I've sort of had this fascination with the writing style throughout the series, and I think if I had to spoof it, I'd go with something like this:
"Again, as I said before earlier in this video, when I started this review, I wanted to avoid sounding pretentious, an attribute the likes of which can be disastrous for the making of a successful review. But, having established that fact firmly and decisviely, perhaps even conclusively--not withstanding earlier comments made about the length of Piccolo's cape, which is a subject for another day-- I can say with great certainty that Goku and Vegeta do indeed comprise a dramaturgical dyad, not only upon which the series depends upon, but through which we can see the true genius of one of the most influential manga authors of all time."
And while you hear this word salad, there's a cool shot of Vegeta beating up Pui Pui or something.
The weird thing is that I didn't really pick up on this in his GT, Super, or OG Dragon Ball review videos. It's almost like he's purposely writing more stuff so he has room for all the cool footage.
Right now I'm in the tail end of the Buu Saga, and while I give him credit for being diplomatic about it, Mark still falls into the same trap I see with a lot of critiques of the Buu Saga: They keep comparing the existing text with some hypothetical better story that they assumed Toriyama was planning to write instead, before he changed his mind.
I think everyone has run across this before. People saw Gohan take the main-character role after the Cell Games and assumed this was a guarantee. When Gohan gets demoted and Goku takes the lead again, they cry foul and complain about how Toriyama failed to make it work, or he just plain gave up. There's an old fan rumor about how he was "forced" to put Goku back in charge because of backlash from angry fans, but this is absurd on its face.
This leads to critiques of the Buu Saga that operate on the premise that there's some idealized "correct" version of the story, where Gohan trains really hard, beats Buu all by himself, and so on. Whenever the published version of the story deviates from this "correct" version, critics suggest that Toriyama got his wires crossed, and blame everything on the awkward pivot back to Goku.
To me, that doesn't make sense. "Gohan and the Next Generation defeat Buu" is a what-if fan theory. Maybe it's better than what we ended up getting, but it's not fair to review the published work by comparing it to a hypothetical draft that may never have existed. That's like if a food critic gave a steakhouse a bad rating because he thought it was a pizzeria and he's still mad that his sirloin didn't have anchovies on it.
When you look at the Buu Saga as it was actually presented, the throughline is clearly not about passing the torch to the kids, because they all get jobbed out and killed. So it's dumb to review the thing and complain that the Gotenks stuff is pointless, and Gohan's power up is unearned, and his loss to Super Buu really sucks the life out of the story, and gosh, this is a really terrible passing-the-torch story. Well that's because it's not a passing-the-torch story. It's a story about Goku trying to pass the torch, failing, and discovering that he still has a place in the world after all. The "torch" he was trying to pass was his identity and personal responsibility, things he can't just confer on someone else.
You can't just tell someone else they're the new protagonist of your story and now they have to go do your job and feed your pets while you play video games. Everyone talks about Vegeta going Majin as a manifestation of his mid-life crisis, but Goku's mid-life crisis was him dying at age 30 and nope-ing his way out of life to train in Valhalla for the rest of eternity. The Buu Saga forced him to accept that this was a mistake, which is why he doesn't just drink a vial full of heart-virus juice after the story ends. He's back in the world of the living and this time he knows he needs to stay there.
And when you look at it from that perspective, suddenly all the Gotenks/Elder Kai Ritual stuff makes a lot more sense as awkward farce. It's anticlimactic and unsatisfying because none of those plans were ever going to work. Nothing worked until Goku and Vegeta both got their heads out of their asses and worked together. The world didn't need martyrs or torch-passings or a 'next generation', it needed adults to put their personal feelings aside for the greater good.

So one of the babytalkers has blocked me. But just before they did, they told me there "Cg" is going to "talk to me" and "put me in my place" excuse me? My place? Actually EXCUSE you. bruh I'm a kawaii/anime blog. I reblog lolita fashion and larme kei. I'm unsure what place you think your "person" can put me in. :/ My blog is mine. Friendships or attempts come with boundaries. Communicate is like that. I'm not going to apologise for them, because I stated my discomfort and pointed out baby talk is ableism. (they got upset by the post) Baby talk is a big fucking no. It's a boundary. And while I don't cuss via dms, I'll do it on my page because I can. (and yes the person took issue with cussing saying it's taking them out of there 'babyspace', and seeing it on there dash is triggering them. Funny triggering you. I thought you didn't care about OTHER peoples comforts.) Your stepping into MY place. Pushing MY boundaries when it comes to communication. If your looking to baby talk with folks, find folks who are comfortable. There's so many on tumblr, and even more on discord. And I'd hate to say it, but inuyasha isn't for 'babies' so even the idea of 'but your blog is baby safe place' nawh not really. Inuyasha has violence. Witch hunter robin which I reblogged a while ago has violence, I reblog DB and DBZ which also has violence. (I mostly reblog bulma but still, the anime's she's from has violence.) I'm not a 'baby safe' blog. I wouldn't sit a baby down and be like 'here ya go, lets watch frieza fight goku." So please grow up, I'll be keen to tell this to your "CG" too. - ya'll wanna do lifestyle stuff? cool, don't do it in my dms, cause I'm not apart of it. I'm uncomfortable and I'm allowed to be. I'm also allowed to speak about my comforts. Your "cg" isn't meant to fix your messes. So fuck off the both of you.

About
Tumblr media
Look it, see the little wolf creature? That is ‘me’. She is also my OC and self insert with in the series. :D She’s one of his creations and yes they have a very heavy master/pet relationship, while I don’t get much into that here. Bare in mind it my come up. So soft block me you need to.
With that said; I am a real adult. I may talk about adult things here. If you are not comfortable with that do not follow. I am not your dad. I can not monitor your internet interactions. But block/flag/whatever you do with a ‘NSFW’ tag if that kind of thing makes you uncomfortable but you still want to follow me. I know the whole “minors do not follow” is not as enforceable as it SHOULD be and you kids are gonna do whatever you want- fuck the police. This is my first and only warning. lmao.
Second, I am like. Not.. ‘hip with the kids’. I do not know all the terms and I also can not monitor or be up to date what is.. ‘bad’ with in fandom. I also kind of don’t care, lol. If someone I reblog or someone who follows me did something you don’t like or don’t agree with it is not my responsibility to keep track of others actions.
Tumblr media
The Basics:
Hey there, I'm Tala or Grunge, or whatever. I'm a real adult over the age of 35 (that's all your getting. I am probably old enough to be your weird crazy aunt/uncle.) My F/O and spirit husband is Alhaz!ad/Alhazre!d. I often call him “Al” here or “Aub”.
INFJ, Scorpio, I'm trans-masc, trans-male/ftm and stealth irl.
Trans rights are human rights, and Protect Trans Kids
I draw, a lot, and paint. My hobbies also include hiking, working on my house, gardening, landscaping, spending time with my family, cooking, reading, and writing. I do take commissions - so if you’d like me to draw or paint you f/o. Look at my commissions :}.
Metal health check; ADHD/ASD - dx’d, in the early 90s. iirc. Retested and diagnosed with ADHD in 2022. Currently seeking treatment for it. Medication has been like night and day for me. So, fellow Autistics and ADHD’s. Welcome. I am negativing them both and it’s been a TIME. There are sighs of OSDD/DID. I have tried talking again and again with therapists making 100% Al is not apart of that; while when channeling him the symptoms are similar; he doesn’t fit the criteria.
Some what of a witch, well. I kind of do what works for me. There are *plenty* of other witch based blogs you’d wanna follow for those resources. This blog is more or less centered around my relationship with Aub. (Alhazred/Alhazad).
Before any judgments here that I might be some loser living in my parent’s basement. ...lol. No. I’m a real adult doing well on my own with a whole ass house, job, and car and all that neat stuff. You can be ficto and be independent, free, and happy. It took a tonne of work to get this far. And it was worth every penny.
Uh... I’ll update this as I get time. yes yes.
Tumblr media
DNI:
DNI: It should go with out saying; MAPS, pedos, zoos, Nazis, TERFS, and any else of the sort. Nope. :|  If you're a HP fan and still support Robert you can go get fucked.
I'm also mildly scarred/due to trauma and it's hard to see DBZ (the saiyans), FF9, or PPG. I’m not saying *your* versions of said characters are bad, it’s just ahahaha.
Tumblr media
System hoping is a grey area; you do what works for you. But-....if you are gonna come into my DM or Asks telling me how Aub visited you and did this and that and some bullshit magical adventure or slept with you or is involved in some astral war. I will block you and he will personally make your life a living hell. Don't do that shit to me, or anyone else for that matter.

THAT INTERVIEW THOUGH my brothers and i like to play the "who would win x vs y" game a lot and sometimes goku gets shuffled in and i always have to add the caveat that, if the other character is mostly a good guy, this isn't a fight to the death fight it's a friendly comparison fight.
like if the question is "who could win" the answer is usually goku. but i can't imagine him going all out the way he would if it was a fight to the death but if it wasn't, goku wouldn't be going all out bc he just. doesn't like hurting people. for him, that's an unfortunate but necessary part of life, but it isn't something he actively seeks out.
vegeta, though... well, i imagine that a large part of that is just his life having been pretty much a continuous stream of traumatic events, but regardless of why, it's pretty clear from the get-go that hurting people for him is a bonus, at least at the beginning. it makes sense that he's like that, both given the general attitudes of most of the saiyans we've met and vegeta's own upbringing, but either way, vegeta when we first meet him enjoys hurting people
i think vegeta is someone who has always had someone he needed to be better than– initially, that was frieza. vegeta's goal has always been another person and he doesn't easily swap between targets, so once goku beat frieza his target switched to goku. before goku did that, vegeta just seemed to see him as someone he'd need to kill after he'd dealt with frieza himself, but frieza was still his true goal. once goku had won, though, goku took frieza's place as "person i need to be stronger than" for vegeta, and that didn't change even when vegeta learned that goku hadn't killed frieza and future trunks did it instead. f!trunks actually ended up taking goku's original place of "i'll kick his ass later" (but he got out of it by vegeta going "wait i'm his dad?" and then much later going "wait hang on i actually care about this kid wtf")
anyway, that's why - to me, at least - it was such a big deal that vegeta accepted goku being stronger than him at the end of the manga. it wasn't just him going "oh well guess i'll give up forever" like his post-cell sulking, it was him finally accepting that he didn't need to defeat goku, that it was possible for both of them to exist together
that's something goku never needed to learn– for goku, it's always been an option to coexist with people, it's always been acceptable that other people could change. it hasn't always been easy, but most of goku's friends were his enemies at some point.
that's part of what makes goku and vegeta's relationship so fascinating for me– they have so much in common, but their worldviews are so fundamentally different that it's almost impossible for them to properly understand each other. i talked about this a bit on my dbz shitpost blog, that goku and vegeta didn't understand each other until literally being the same person, but i focused more on vegeta bc i'm me. on goku's end, i think it's in large part that he chooses to see the best in everyone. or, i guess, it's more that he chooses to see the best that everyone could be. goku believes in second chances, and third, and fourth, and so on. to goku, it never seems to be too late to become a good person. or at least to stop being a bad one.
a lot of people dismiss goku's kindness as idiocy - which makes sense to some degree; one of his character traits is being "stupid" - but as i've gotten older, i've begun to appreciate it more and more. people can't change if you don't let them– and goku is someone who is always willing to let people change. no matter how awful someone is, goku will always believe they can become a better person. there's something beautiful in that, i think.

i think id like to just. start Talking More in this blog. let shit out, y'know? and to start, i wanna talk about akira toriyama a bit. more specifically, i wanna share some important memories i have of dragon ball.
a vivid memory i have is going with my cousin and a friend of his to the library (because at that point it was one of the only places with An Internet Connection and A Computer and A Printer) and we would print pictures of dbz episodes yet to air in portugal.
we'd often get confused over dbz in the internet, because in portugal they changed picollo's name to 'Satan' and mr. satan was known as Hercules. or because we'd see new transformations or characters and have zero context for them. we got real confused over goten.
speaking of portugal: our dragon ball z dub is fucking infamous. it is so funny. it is littered with portuguese references (characters would often reference portuguese tv channel names, celebrities, shows). there was a lot of screaming that the pt va clearly didn't care for, so it was not uncommon for characters to start singing amidst their screams. vegeta changed vas 3 times and at some point he breaks the 4th wall to comment about it.
i think the vas at the time thought the show was dumb as fuck and didn't care enough and just had a ton of fun. it was absolutely horrible, and an universally loved dub. i wouldnt exchange the portuguese dbz dub experience for anything in this world.
along with pokemon and sonic, goku and gohan were some of the first things i started drawing. i got introduced to tracing paper and i'd trace over magazine pictures, trading card pictures, posters, everything i could fine. dragon ball was one of the strongest early artistic influences for me. everything had big muscles and crazy long hair it was *so fucking cool*.
there is a shared experience throughout most kids who grew up in the 90s/00s of performing the motions for the kamehameha during recess. or having that one classmate who couldn't watch dbz and participate on the fun because his mother wouldn't allow them to see it, it was 'Too Violent'.
as i grew up, dragon ball kept being somewhat relevant to my life. I read and re-read the manga dozens of times. GT didn't really hit it for me, but i still got a bunch of vhs tapes for the first few arcs. i played a lot of the games. there was final bout for the playstation, supersonic warriors for the gba and ds. the budokai tenkaichi games. i was still playing budokai tenkaichi games well into my mid 20s with my college roommates!
at that point, i started getting into dragon quest too, and i always really liked toriyama's artstyle when translated to pixels and 3d models.
i haven't really followed super closely except for watching one or two movies, but db in general has always remained very dear and close to my heart. so it isn't surprising to know that it broke a little bit today.
i am very grateful for mr. toriyama and all he created. may he rest in peace.

OK, look, there are a lot of issues to be had with Becoming Elizabeth but honestly, the problems I've seen were ones I fully expected. The thing with Thomas Seymour, saw it coming a million miles away. I was not shocked, I was disappointed, but I suspected they were going to handle it badly anyway. But the (other) thing that gave me this angry, visceral rage was the Kett's Rebellion subplot. Because the show wants you to think that it was about a poor, illiterate, mindless violent mob of catholic's rebelling against an (imperfect but not "bad") Anglican government, committing atrocities because they were poor, illiterate, violent, stupid peasants who are also Catholics.
The reality is the rebellion was the peasantry rising up in righteous indignation at the abuse of power from landowners cutting off the land from the common people. People couldn't let their animals graze in fields, and families were literally kicked out of their homes. All so rich landowners could close off land to do with what they wanted. With inflation and unemployment on the rise, some landowners also rose the rents of their tenants and wages also dropped. You can't afford to pay my increased rent with your decreased wages? Too bad, get out or I kill you. Everything benefited the rich landowners and they knowingly, intentionally fucked over the poor. Not unlike today!
The government's response to it was swift, violent, and brutal. Maybe 3,000 rebels total were killed to say nothing of the civilian casualties. To add further insult to grievous injury, after the rebellion was quelled it was decreed there would be a national holiday celebrating the rebellion's defeat and lectures were given on the sins of rebelling against your king and government.
I know why they didn't go with this subplot. Because no rich person with power wants the regular, ordinary person to see a rebellion that they can sympathize with and get it in their heads that they can too. Rebellions scare the rich because they know the "poor" outnumber them a million to one. We also live in a modern society where we can think, act, and band together to fight injustice. Why do you think the conservative right wing is so determined to remove as many rights as humanely possible from anyone who isn't exactly like them?
How they chose to portray Kett's rebellion to be as unsympathetic and as inaccurate as possible then turn it around to show how Lord Dudley is a prick while his son Robert can only look dumbfounded when he doesn't show mercy...it doesn't have any impact narratively speaking. We already don't like Lord Dudley. Anyone with a basic knowledge of Tudor history knows he dies. I feel like, a better team of writers could have portrayed the rebellion as sympathetic and Dudley killing the leaders and anyone else tied to it having a stronger emotional impact. There's plenty of material to use to show the divide between Catholics and Protestants.
Hell, go the extra mile and have it narratively tie in with Elizabeth being the victim of a powerful rich man taking advantage of someone who has no support or power of their own. Have her rebel against his attempts to cajole her into a relationship and marriage. My God, the Seymour's ousted her mother and her family from power! She shouldn't want to have anything to do with them!
But no, I guess have it be stupid peasants rebelling as an excuse to murder and steal because poor people are dumb and evil obviously and all non-evangelical Protestant religion makes you evil, and yeah, portray your groomer and abuser as sympathetically as possible.
I guess!

So, I don't normally do this but after watching the first twenty something minutes of Netflix's Blonde all I can say is....
What The Fuck??
What did I just watch? Why was this movie made? How could anyone have possible derived any sort of pleasure in what was seen?
I mean...it was bad guys, it was really bad. Bad as in it turned my stomach watching it, kind of bad. Feeling gross, horrified and uncomfortable the whole time, level of bad. I couldn't even finish watching the movie, I just went "screw this" and fast forwarded to the end.
This movie revels in the violence the character of Marilyn Monroe/Norma Jean endures. It takes sadistic joy in making her suffer. Fully expecting the audience to also revel in her suffering. Hateful is the perfect word for it, its just pain p*rn from start to finish. You can tell this was written and directed by some really fucked up men.
It is also boring as hell. It is badly written in how horrific it treats Monroe's character to just how badly written the script in general is. There is nothing engaging about the story, nothing that makes me think its worth sitting down and watching all the way through for the next hour and a half. The dialogue is stunted, the cinematography is weird, the acting isn't memorable or great and I STG, every other scene is just to provoke shock value.
The weird choice to go back and forth between black and white to color also makes no sense. Because everything is so disjointed and confusing. To say nothing of the freakish obsession the movie has with Marilyn's fixation on her, ugghhh...."Daddy". Which, if I'm being honest, I think is the writers fetish shining through.
Don't bother watching it, your life will be a happier one if you don't.

HTTYD Nine Realms (potential fanfic fuel)
Dragons: The Nine Realms does have some genuine potential but if I may, here's a few changes I'd make from what I've seen.
1.) Have Dr. Kullerson be an archeologist/historian who specializes in Viking history.
It makes far more sense to me story wise. The previous movies and franchise dealt with Vikings and their culture. That wasn't a tiny period in history, that lasted from roughly 790's-1060's CE. There is a lot of ground to cover and Tom's mother could be someone who specializes in Berkian Viking history. Having her be the historian gives writers someone who can give a useful exposition to people new to the franchise while also helping to expand world building.
She'd ask questions like: How did the Viking's go from hating Dragons for over several generations to (what looks like) effectively worshipping them in the span of a single generation? Why did they move from old Berk to new Berk? Where are there ships? Was Hiccup Haddock real or was he a mythical figure like King Arthur? Etc. Etc.
The potential is fascinating because we learn more about what Hiccup, Astrid and the other dragon riders did later in their lives. A big episode could be finding their tomb and all the maps, journals and wellspring of information he wrote down that were spared for future generations.
2.) The Nine Realms are different hidden worlds that the team goes to find.
Hiccup was a Viking, they sailed around the world. Its not impossible to believe that he and Astrid traveled across the globe and learned of other hidden worlds. Hence the series title, Nine Realms. He made a map so that future dragon riders, i.e. Zephyr and Nuffink, can continue protecting the dragons. Which could lead to a whole wealth of storylines that can have Tom traveling the world and meeting other kids like him who learned about the dragons and are protecting them.
3.) The story doesn't need an overarching villain, but there are plenty of potential antagonists
HTTYD and its TV Series had it easy in that regard, since they could use antagonists from the books or just create dragon hunters as enemies. Here, Nine Realms doesn't necessarily need a Viggo, Johann or Bludvist. You can have someone who just hates dragons for the sake of it or for profit but the show shouldn't just do something boring like "Evil Dragon Hunting Group tm". It could be interesting to see the kids fighting against government officials, companies who would try to steal or exploit the dragons, Zoo's and theme parks, and even have antagonists that aren't against dragons per se, but rather concerned about reintroducing a species that hasn't been seen for serval hundred years and how that could negatively impact the current ecosystem.
These wouldn't be easy antagonists with easy solutions, or one dimensional villains. The kids would have to think hard and work together to defeat them, the way Hiccup and the riders did with their enemies.
4.) Dragons have been existing in the world as we know it, we just don't know because they are good at hiding.
One serious complaint I've found from fans point out how it could be even possible that after 1300 years the dragons could survive after living in the hidden realm for so long. My answer, they've been leaving the hidden world on and off, they've just been good at hiding. Believe it or not, there are plenty of unexplored places in the world that humans haven't been to or rarely venture to. Forrests, lakes, jungles, underwater caverns, the ocean. It's not impossible to believe.
Those are just a few ideas, I may add more later. What are other peoples thoughts on this? What would you add, change or recommend?

My #1 post of 2022
One of the things that I enjoyed the most about Iron Widow was Wu Zetian's anger. Her absolute rage at the injustice of her situation. The second hand catharsis I felt reading about someone who is so sick of everyone's bullshit and just lashing out, no fucks given felt weirdly liberating. As someone whose been taught to suppress her anger her whole life and has a stupid amount of difficult time trying to express that anger, (and everyone telling you oh just get angry and let the anger loose, like no you dumb fuck it isn't that easy unlearning a toxic habit that's been ingrained in me for the last thirty years of my entire fucking life!) seeing her rage, felt good.
Anyways, more YA novels where the female lead is not only allowed to get mad and stay mad but isn't punished for it. Please.

you seem like ur really picky when it comes to anime which isn’t a bad thing!!!! but what made bleach stand out to you?
flkdfjgklfdjkl i don't even know if i would call it being picky so much as just lazy?? like even if something is dumb/cheesy/generic, i'll usually still find enjoyment in it even if it's only in an ironic sort of way? like...trust me, my taste is not super exquisite or anything like that lmaooo i will happily drink the shitty code red mountain dews of anime in addition to the expensive, high-quality champagnes. half the time i don't even care if it's subbed or dubbed, my palate is just that basic tbh 🥴 but i did grow up in the 90's/early millennium watching anime and then i grew out of it after a while as i got older but now i'm like....too lazy to get into anything new because it just feels like so much time and effort and dedication??? like there's so many series that i just KNOW i would love, but i haven't gotten around to watching them. especially because i know how i tend to hyper-fixate on things and then it's hard for me to focus on anything else so i always tell myself "no, no, i'll watch it another day. i'm not ready to dive headfirst into this and make it my new obsession just yet" lmaoo does that make any sense? and that's not even just with anime but with legit any kind of tv show, or movie, or entertainment media in general. so many popular, well-known, must-see shows/movies are just sitting in my "watch later" list because i'm lazy and procrastinate all the time. OH, but tldr; here's what pulled me into bleach: for me, it was the characters. Specifically Ichigo at first. I just felt like he was such an interesting protagonist?? Like at that point I was used to dbz and naruto where the protag is just kind of goofy and adorably dim-witted and loves food, etc. but Ichigo was just so interesting and multi-faceted to me. Like he had this tough, IDGAF outer exterior, but then these soft, misunderstood, complex layers underneath, and that really stood out to me (maybe because it's something I related to a lot at the time....especially back then as a teenager because I put on so much more of a tough front than I do now and wasn't as in tune with my emotions or who I really was as a person just yet???). And then I also felt a similar way towards Rukia, she was very relatable to me and I loved, loved, loved her character. She was just so different from what I was used to seeing in other series and I was drawn to her. And even though I couldn't relate to Orihime as much as I could with Ichigo and Rukia, because she was a lot more bubbly than I was, I was still so endeared by her at the same time, and she eventually ended up becoming my ultimate favorite character, which I wasn't expecting. So yeah, I would say the characters and their relationships/interactions with each other is what really drew me into Bleach at first, and kept me around into the SS arc in which the plot was so good (and the OST was a total banger) and so I was hooked. Plus, as an added bonus, IchiHime ended up becoming my number one OTP of all time, like....I know I haven't gotten into a lot of series, but IH was just...it for me. It's the only fandom thing I've ever actually created and dedicated an entire blog to so dkjgfdkjgk, it was just kind of a natural progression to immerse myself so completely into the bleach fandom once I created a blog based on an aspect of it that I talked about every week when new chapters were released lol. I've never "interacted" like that with any other series before, if that makes sense.

Oh yeah, you can pin stuff to blogs now. Well here's a thing about me related to DB and basically what to expect here on ye olde sideblogge
Hi, I'm Blues, I'm an adult job-haver, I draw, and a lot of my drawings are now of DB and DB accessories, which are posted on my main blog and then rbed here if DB related
I like many other kids who had Toonami growing up saw DBZ and went "holy shit this is incredible". That being said I didn't really get into the series until I read the manga from the start not too long ago. The manga is my main frame of reference for everything
I’m a verified Son Family Appreciator. I love them all to death and I will protect them with my life. This blog’s name is a reference to the Son family days actually (5/7, 8, 9, and 10). They’re all frequent fliers on this blog.
Goku is my favorite character by a Lot. I find him to be not only adorable but also fascinating. He’s just incredible. After him, I’d say Chichi, Gohan, Future Trunks, S Broly, Piccolo, and Goten are the ones you’ll see me yelling about the most. I’m also on Krillin, Yamcha, and Tien hype duty because they deserve it
Gochi is my biggest ship by far so expect a Lot of them here. After that I’m a fan of basically all the married ships to varying degrees. I don’t particularly care about other ships after that, but I support you and your ship endeavors anyway. I tag every ship I rb or talk about. That being said, the only ship I actively don’t like t/rumai since I find it to be creepy due to the de-aging thing. That’s the last I’ll say about it here though unless asked directly. I really don’t want to be very negative on here
DB > Z >>>>> S. That being said I only have peripheral knowledge of S bc I haven’t read/watched it yet. I’ll get to it eventually but I’m not exactly excited to lol. I’ll probably watch GT eventually too
I like character and story analysis a lot so don’t be shocked if you see me go tf off at random. I have two talking tags: stuff and nonsense and blues rambles. The former is just my random text posts and are usually just me dicking around. The latter is when I go deeper into analysis and rambling. I also post sketches here as well if they’re DB related. These can be found under the tag my art.
If you see replies/follows from pokerharem, that me. it’s my main blog lol. Also I LOVE talking to people about DB so please come say hi and don’t be shy about commenting on my posts! 🥺
Okay I think I’ve rambled enough. Cheers and have a good day~

"Anyway, to spell it out, the friend brought up that someone that used to be a mutual but soft blocked me made the comment, so yes, I did make the addition after she told me about it. But of course everything has to be done with malicious intent, so of course I made it SPECIFICALLY because that person said it. " you're not making sense. the reason you came up with that "addendum" was because you were made aware of that person's opinion. so, yes, you did bring it up specifically because that person said their opinion. if they never made that post, you would not have come up with your "addendum" literally seconds later. also, why did you lie the first time and say your friend only brought it up as a possibility and you were making an assumption when you did, in fact, base your "addendum" specifically on what a former mutual of yours said? do you and your friends enjoy gossiping about people in the dbz rpc who disagree with the opinions held in this clique of yours, and people in the dbz rpc you all don't like in general?
Tumblr media
[Wow. I thought we were done with this silliness.
I'm going to try and keep this short (edit: I didn't). Problem here is you're accusing me of "vague blogging" using the loosest definition of it. Like I really just do not see why your panties are in such a wad over this (if this is in fact the same person).
Taking what someone says and making their own commentary is LITERALLY what everyone on this site does, whether it's in agreement or opposition. That's all I was doing. The only issue here is that it was inspired by a post of someone I imagine you care about. Which is great. Good on you for sticking up for your friend (and I am being sincere about that). But you're blowing this out of proportion and calling my addendum INSPIRED by their post and what likely others will also say about the matter as a personal attack. I did not personally insult them or say something like "anyone who thinks this is a moron." This was my post, and I quote:
"No. I will not take “Pan is confirmed to be three” as an excuse when painting Pan as the “damsel in distress” was the number one reason Pan’s writing was so awful in GT, as well as purposefully done to “give goku motive to fight”. Do not start this young is the point here."
If anything, I'm calling out the writers of this series and GT more than anyone else because, if you read it or my tags, THAT was where my dismay laid. I don't care if someone wants to defend the decision THEMSELVES because she's a toddler. I don't care. I was saying that I--me, myself, and only I in this case--will not use that as defense for Pan getting kidnapped and filling a "damsel in distress" role yet again in this new movie. I don't want to see them start the same trend they used (and admitted they purposefully used) with Pan at this young of an age and set a precedent for it as something that becomes entrenched in her character because she's a female. It says nothing about people who feel that her age makes her getting kidnapped fine. It was literally just me expressing that I don't feels it's a good enough excuse for it when they've already set Pan up the way they have.
Anyway. Whatever you're trying to do isn't working. As I said, you've blown a harmless opinion out of proportion and made it something it never was. My friend and I weren't "gossiping" as you put it. We were discussing the trailer, saw the post, and decided that we didn't agree with it ourselves. There was no name calling or judgement. Merely statements following a "we simply don't agree" vein. It is literally no different than watching the news and commenting on the story with other people. Is that considered gossiping now? Vague blogging the news anchor or the writer of an article?
Call me a liar all you want for not understanding why I was getting accused of vague blogging when our definitions are obviously very different. If you're trying to get people to unfollow me or out me as a horrible person, go for it. So far, no one seems to care that much as far as I can see, and if they do, that's their prerogative. I'm not going to entertain the anons any more, so don't bother sending them. It's immature and petty and not worth my time when I know I've done nothing of real, horrific substance. If you have something you want to discuss with me, my ims are open. But I'm ending this here.

The ending of Attack on Titan: a shallow analysis
Tumblr media
(I don't think I should have to put a spoilers alert on a blog about the ENDING OF AOT, but in general if you mind being spoiled on a series, I advise you to refrain from attending discussions about the body of work until you've finished it in its entirety/come up to speed on the current chapter/episode. Screw hype dude, do you like being hurt? Also for the TLDR, it’s that Attack on Titan explores the cycle of hatred (Eren’s journey) AND love which is why Mikasa and Ymir become relevant at the end of the story.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PREFACE
Since the newly added panels of AOT’s ending have been likened by some to the ending of Naruto, I'd like to say that Naruto's end truly hurt me; the way it flows into Boruto is so contrived it burns. A story that's always centered around powerful ninja bloodlines fighting political wars suddenly introduced aliens that harvest planets for energy as the super antagonist, and additionally they're the source of all our characters' powers as well as the jinchuriki and tailed beasts themselves. Then when you look at the plot of Boruto which heavily relies on the Otsutsuki clan as an antagonistic force, their whole existence feels like the transition from Dragon Ball straight into the first DBZ arc with Goku learning he’s really part of an alien race that was meant to destroy Earth.
I didn't detect so forced a role in the ending of AOT, but it's absolutely plausible to speculate that the alternate ending was influenced for this reason, as we know Attack on Titan wasn't produced through Isayama's involvement alone. Certain compromises are made when operating as a team, though it would be wonderful if the original intent of authors were more absolute in the world of production than they are known to be.
And as much as I don't enjoy half-hearted continuations of series for a royalty check, I ALMOST can't blame them for doing it...it creates (many) happy fans, more jobs, and Isayama gets his royalty check. The rest of us suffer but hey, artists need money I guess... 🥀 Moving on. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#1. Eren's development as a character
I never saw Eren's goal steered in the direction of breaking the cycle of revenge or hatred. He was acting wholly in his own interests. He's intensely selfish, doesn't want to change his views, and exists in the story to further the cycle itself. According to me, Chapters 129 and 131 perfectly explain his motivations for the rumbling.
Now before I go on, I'd like to bring a particular scene to mind. I do remember him saying this once (to Historia who had just told him killing the rest of the world is unjustifiable and wrong):
Tumblr media
Yes, he said that, but I don't think that is what he ever intended the rumbling to be used for.
After he stated that 80% of humanity was wiped out so Paradis will be safe for the time being, he neglected to answer Armin's questions in 139: "Did you really need to go that far? Are you sure you did all of this for our sakes?" We may also consider the thoughts he chose NOT to share in chapter 131:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That combined with this excerpt from 129 is pretty much all there is to Eren's convictions.
Tumblr media
Those are the same words he said in Chapter 2 after his mother died.
So despite his brief period of self-loathing when considering 1) the countless lives in survey corps sacrificed for his sake, 2) being confronted with his and his father's involvement in the Reiss family, 3) everything he learned about his enemy--that all titans are formerly human, that the titan shifters were just children deceived by their world--he even admits to Reiner during Tyburn's speech (Chapter 100) that they are indeed in the same boat--and on top of that, admitting that the rumbling will do nothing to fix the course of history, he settled with the same conviction he held the moment he decided to do something to change the world.
Again, here's his words from 139 showing us just how angry a boi Eren was.
Tumblr media
This was Eren Jaeger...he didn't even really know what he was doing.
As a human being, Eren was very much in the cycle of revenge as much as everyone else was. His course of action never deviated too far from that path. He knew better, but he lashed out at the world to protect the few people he cared about anyway. He took freedom away from the ones who threatened him. He was a mass murderer, and so were the other soldiers in this series fighting for their own reasons, since titans were people. Survey corps were always slaughtering these people whom they saw as monsters. Marley viewed Eldians as monstrously and with as much hatred as Eldians viewed the titans. Eren did not try to justify his actions to everyone. He simply stopped seeing the value of life in others not important to him, as humans often do.
So what did he sacrifice 80% of humanity for? From 129 again:
Tumblr media
Them meaning his immediate friends.
No, he didn't care about their children's children and beyond because there's no way to control what happens when you're gone from this world. It wasn't his problem. Eren had 4 years at most left to live, and he wanted to do what he could to ensure his friends were happy before he left.
And as jarring as it was to see Eren become undone in the last chapter, I didn't find it completely out of character, because for one he was talking to his closest friend moments before his own death, and secondly, Eren was just a stupid human like the rest of the people in this series. Obviously, most people just want a normal life that they can spend with people whom they love. Eren was the same way, but was denied that future (and happened to be able to do something about it). Very selfish goals, but those chosen few were his world. Along with a general distaste for humanity, that's how I understand his character motivations.
*Which is to say in relation to the extra pages, Ymir's curse returning a generation or two after the events of AOT doesn't entirely void his actions. I’m assuming the power of Ymir apparently exists as a force of nature on this version of Earth period, so I suppose this points us to an endless cycle of humans eventually finding the power and using it as they see fit *
#2 Why is Romance Relevant to Attack on Titan?
I wasn't expecting a romance factor to be relevant at the end of the story, however considering that Mikasa's affection for Eren WAS her most prominent personality trait as a character, then the events that followed, I was forced to look back to a few moments in the series that could lend light to why, in the end, a romantic subplot ended the curse of Ymir. My conclusions are as follows:
1. Quite literally, the cycle of hatred never ends. Humans will always have a reason to be unkind to one another. We are animals after all; this trait cannot be reasoned through with logic, bred out, or defeated. We are a self-aware species (Eren's even aware of his own hypocrisy in Chapter 131). There will always arise those who take what they want for themselves because they decide in the end they don't care about others as much as they care about their own interests.
2. To make this second point, I'm stealing these words out of a certain machine lifeform's mouth, but bear with me here:
"But the humans...? Now THEY are interesting. Because they are an enigma! They killed uncountable numbers of their own kind, yet loved in equal measure! It's fascinating, don't you think? What could possibly drive such behavior? We have dedicated ourselves to unraveling this riddle of humanity..."
--Adam from NieR:Automata
AOT uses Eren and Mikasa as a case study of humanity. Humans hate and love in equal measure.
In Ch. 129, Zeke's piece here foreshadows the significance of those two for the story, I guess?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now everyone reading this series as well as the characters in it had noticed how much fondness Mikasa always had for Eren, and how aloof he always was towards her in return...that's something for them to work out.
Despite never really reciprocating Mikasa's feelings, Eren told Armin at the end of the series that yes, he enjoyed receiving her attention; he would have liked to live a happy life with her. So, Mikasa just liked Eren, Eren liked her... And similar to Mikasa, Ymir just liked King Fritz. It doesn't matter whether we think these feelings were sound or not; they did what they wanted with themselves. I suppose that explains the reason she was a mega simp for Eren in the whole story. Yes, this turn in the story reads like a different plot now, not one about war and killing monsters, but I'm pleasantly surprised that this trait taken as a flaw of Mikasa’s actually served as a necessary condition to end the conflict of the titans.
Eren wouldn't let go of his hatred of the world for his own satisfaction, Ymir wouldn't let go of her love of King Fritz for her own satisfaction, and Mikasa is the only one who decided to let go of her convictions in the interest of someone other than herself. That's what moved the curse.
I think Isayama used the characters of Ymir and Mikasa to demonstrate that while there is a cycle of hatred and revenge running rampant in humanity, the cycle of love doesn't stop either.
In closing, and I truly apologize for such a lengthy post; I hope I didn’t reiterate my point too often here...I didn't think about any of this until I heard so many readers upset with the way AOT ended. I'm not personally left with any disappointment in where the story went. I didn't know where it was going to go in the first place, and I think it could have been much worse for us in different hands.
*shrugs*
AOT is a story about the nature of humanity.
*And in regards to Jean, if that is supposed to be him with Mikasa in the new panels, all I can say is dude likes his girl. He was a simp for her and she was a simp for Eren, but the fact that they shared their lives together means a lot even if Eren was never completely buried in her heart. He meant a lot to her man, idk...

So, I’ve been watching Sword Art Online: Abridged Parody, and...
I don’t think it’s terribly controversial to say that SAO Abridged has become the gold standard for what a good abridged series can do. While Team Four Star took 3 legendary IPs, Final Fantasy VII, Hellsing Ultimate, Dragon Ball Z are all generally considered to be fairly decent as stories. As much as people complain about DBZ’s random power ups, it’s not as if it was incoherent. Things make a decent amount of sense and that was the worst of the bunch.
Sword Art Online is notoriously problematic. No doubt I’m not the first person to say that. Plenty of people have said as much all over Tumblr and Youtube. In abridging SAO, Something Witty Entertainment managed to improve on what happened originally.
Now, I want to do something incredibly nerdy. (As if I haven’t done nerdy things on this blog before.) One of my favorite things about SAO Abridged is its insane sense of connections between episodes. Things are referenced that don’t matter until much later and jokes are often built on previous events long before the present episode. Two of the big plot points of the current arc are built on information we learned in a few previous episodes. I want to argue that episode 2 is the most important episode of the first arc because of its connections to every other episode in the arc.
To start, the narrator in the cold open connects this episode to the one before it by saying that a number of players died after being idiots. Notably some jumped into fire. If you remember, Klein struggled to kill a pig and named his avatar Ballsdeep69. In episode 2, this is shown in this episode in that players haven’t read the manual compiled by beta testers.
Though, it’s not as if that;s  the only reason they’d fail. In episode 3, the leader of the Black Cats took some of the tutorial NPCs from missions. Kayaba blames this as a factor in people failing miserably in the season finale. But we’ll get to him soon enough.
The intro plays and we’re in a meeting of players who are trying to beat a boss. The idea is that people will strategize to beat a boss by working together. This doesn’t pan out well throughout the series. Kirito is able to tank hits from seven lower level players in episode 4. In episode 5, the meeting to beat Sheeptar happens after 7 people. When they go after the meeting, 5 more died.
Now Kibaou makes his only appearance in the series. I don’t want to make too many “this character makes their debut here” connections. Asuna and Tiffany make their debut and are important characters in this series, but I’m not talking about them in this way. Kibaou is minor enough that I can mention him here. His stupid entrance makes his takeover of the Aincrad Liberation Front in episode 10 seem like a negative statement about them more than a positive one for him.
Though, episode 8 shows a bit of their incompetence on their own. While Corbax thinks his strategy of “group up and hit it till it dies” is revolutionary, it’s about as revolutionary as he is Hispanic. The strategy’s true origin is episode 2, as an alternative to Kirito’s “final solution”. That doesn’t work well and Kibaou starts to take power as a result of Corvax dying.
We then get Asuna’s troubles with menus. She’s not the only one with these issues, considering we learn Yoko has issues with the menu in episode 6. However, this is one of many clever ways to hint at Asuna’s ineptitude with the game early on. While she’s shown to have a lot of innate skill in this episode, that’s despite her inexperience. For all the changes made from the original, this was best shown in both versions by Asuna using her real name as her avatar name in the final episode of the arc.
Something I didn’t pick up on right away was that the setup for Laughing Coffin comes from episode 2. One player receives messages he believed to be from Jesus. At the end of the fight, he gets the command to kill them all and the end card is preluded with a creepy version of “Jesus Loves Me”. They come up in episodes 6 and 9. In episode 4, it comes up that other groups like Titan’s Hand have come up.
But the big thing that you see from this episode is a theme that runs through the first arc of this show. Kirito sees this game as an alternative to the real world. It would be easiest to make this the only real connection to this episode, but that would be lazy. (Clearly, this was written before I realized how crazy this “one post a day” idea was.)
Kirito mentions that he has power he didn’t in the real world in episode 1. While that may have felt like a throwaway line at the time. In episode 2, he uses that power to tell off the idiots around him, just like he wishes he could have done in real life. And to be honest, he might not be right about being able to solo the boss, but he’s definitely better than most everyone else in the boss room. Asuna might be on par with him skillwise, but he has more experience than her.
I almost called this section of connections “Kirito is better than those around him.” While he’s not the strongest player in SAO, as we end up learning, he’s certainly better than most of the people he’s playing alongside. This ego serves as fuel for tagging with Silica in episode 4 under the supposed threat of Laughing Coffin. It’s why we get the formation of “The Kirito is Always Right Foundation” in episodes 5 and 6. It’s why he challenges Heathcliff in episodes 9 and 11.
But something happens.
In episode 3, he unwittingly joins a guild because he’s such an amazing player. However, that wasn’t enough to save his guild mates from dying. Sadly, he had just decided to open up to people and the ordeal closed him off to people and even emotions according to episode 4. In episodes 4, 5, 7, and 8 we get the sense that this event had a serious emotional impact on him.
However, through these events he learns to open up to people more. Going on missions and teaming up with othes, he starts to open up to people. This obviously leads to a relationship with Asuna and Yui original. As stupid as he still feels the people around him are, he still has respect for him.
In episode 2, he tells the people, “Shoot for the stars. It will make it more fun when I kick you back into the dirt.” In episode 8, we see a change in his epic rant, which happens to be my favorite moment in the series. On humans he says, “They are without question a complete write-off as a species. And how dare you make me care about them!” And when Kayaba goes on a similar rant to Kirito’s after his identity is revealed, Kirito plays defense for them, lukewarm as it is.
And wouldn’t you know? Kirito is told that he could have served as a leader and inspiration to the people in SAO because he is better than so many of them. Sure, Kayaba bring the idea up that same episode and a few episodes earlier in trying to recruit him for the Knights of the Blood Oath. However, the idea first came up in episode 2.

cannot stop thinking about whis having undetermined (not malicious) motives for wanting goku and vegeta to work together. if dbs 2 happens i would love them to have whis revisit this in the story. "thought it was about time to have you two train together" like. What Is He Planning
the only thing i can think of is that he wanted to get rid of beerus. having the last two saiyans kill the guy who ordered their extinction is pretty karmically satisfying, and it doesn’t hurt that they’re both op as hell (so it beerus tho).
it kind of looked like that was a potential twist later on, but i think the creators got too attached to beerus (which is just. why? why tho?). or it’s just bad writing.
not that dragon ball has ever been known for its in-depth examinations of the psyche (which isn’t a problem; the point is friendship and punching things), but super is a lot more cavalier about certain things (read: genocide) than any of its predecessors.
it’s possible that there was an idea to have goku become the new god of destruction, but (hopefully) that idea would’ve been shattered pretty quickly, since it’s not the first time goku has been offered godhood, and the last offer was a lot better. it’s also possible that they planned to have vegeta do that but then realized that that would kinda fuck over his whole character arc of becoming marginally less homicidal.
the issue i have with whis is that while he’s got a fun and genuinely likeable personality, his function in the story is a lot closer to a plot device than an actual character. this isn’t inherently a bad thing, but it doesn’t work quite as well in this case bc the beginning of super really did appear to be setting him up as a full-fledged active character - a dragon with an agenda, if you will, to beerus’s big bad of the first arc. that also wouldn’t be a problem, except that beeurs no longer appears to be acting as an antagonist.
i’ve gone into why i don’t like beerus (as an antagonist or as a character in general) on my personal blog a few times, but the issues with beerus also directly impact whis, and whis’ lack of any real importance outside of his job (i.e., his connection with beerus and the rest of the dragon ball pantheon) means that he’s pretty badly hurt by said issues.
dbs also has the issue of setting up some genuinely new and interesting ideas, but being afraid to deviate from the show’s status quo to properly execute them. this is becoming more and more common in anime, from what i’ve seen, and it ends up sacrificing character development, usually for comedic value. and not good comedic value either, just running gags that enough of the fans find amusing for the writers to just stick with that instead of having the characters grow and potentially lose the ability to keep the gag around.
think about fullmetal alchemist (the manga). one of the most famous running gags is ed’s height, but as the story progresses and gets more serious, those jokes begin to peter off and eventually stop more or less completely. this is in part bc ed himself has physically grown, but it’s also illustrative of how the story has progressed and the characters have progressed with it. it was a fun gag while it lasted, but it wasn’t permanent. it’s also important to note that ed’s lack of height was in part due to the weight of his prosthetic limbs, so the gag would have to be left behind eventually bc it wasn’t worth sacrificing so much of the story for. dbs and other newer shōnen don’t seem able to put the story before the jokes. and in light-hearted moments that can sometimes be okay, but when it’s consistent throughout the story (or worse, part of the story), it kind of ruins the feeling.
bouncing back to dbs, there are two examples of jokes illustrate this: mr. popo and goku. plenty of people know that the scene where popo warns vegeta not to break the hypertonic lion tamer (sorry) is a reference to tfs’s running gag of popo being absolutely terrifying. this works without knowledge of the abridged series bc it looks like an otherwise nice guy getting fed up with these assholes who keep breaking his shit, and it works with the reference bc pecking order. does it properly mesh with his kind, gentle, and extremely patient nature? no, not really. but it’s a little side joke that doesn’t really hurt anything.
compare that with goku. goku was never characterized as an intellectual genius, but the original incarnation of him in db and later in dbz wasn’t so much stupid as thoughtless, naive, and occasionally just uninformed (which makes perfect sense - he’s an amnesiac alien kid who spent the last few years alone with no one to teach him things). but he had a good heart and generally tried to do the right thing. if the world was in danger, making sure it was safe was his top priority. he was a smart and clever fighter who learned from his errors, and he frequently showed his own form of intelligence outside of battle by thinking ahead in ways that no one else had - such as realizing that the earth would still need protecting after he died for good, and choosing to stay dead after bulma pointed out that many of the recent threats to earth’s safety were there because of him. he doesn’t think the way most people do, but he certainly wasn’t a brainless idiot who didn’t care about anyone but himself. not perfect, but still.
in dbza, he becomes said brainless idiot bc it’s a parody series and that’s what’s funny (sort of like tenshinhan and chiaotzu randomly being jewish, or turles trying to steal christmas). but that characterization got popular, and super’s goku frequently leaned a lot more towards the abridged incarnation rather than the original goku. again, that would be fine if it was a one-off joke, but it often feels like the audience is getting bounced back and forth between canon!goku and abridged!goku all the time, which is.... frustrating. to say the least.
beerus and whis suffer from something similar, only instead of being related to comedy, it’s related to their roles in the story and how they affect the plot.
tldr: writing is hard, status quo is NOT the end all be all, and i apparently have a lot of unresolved feelings about this that i should probably bring up with my therapist bc wow
