this has been sitting in my drafts as a response to some ideas that were circulating online a week or two ago due to that bang sihyuk interview, and it's clumsily worded but i still feel like it's a valid take so i'm just posting anyway. i'm not a music professional or connected to the industry, so if i'm far wrong just ignore this random post. i just get frustrated that for all the talk of strategy etc. everyone seems to act like bts (and by extension jk) are an established *western* act while either still promoting like a kpop act in sk schedule-wise or like a beyonce/tswift level act (which ... yeah duh) with vast u.s. name recognition (not so much) - and then wondering what's not clicking
idk about this "crisis" but i know one thing has struck me about the kpop and sk press and kpop stans in general
i touched on it back when i was talking in my tags about like crazy getting traction in the us
and what i meant was that those involved in kpop are too blinded by the industry cycle and too used to that cycle's accelerated evaluation by stans and press alike
like no one in the us who is not already a fan is waiting on the day of release to listen stream and buy. it is NOT like sk with weekly shows, several comebacks per year, etc etc
and most especially it's not this thing of: create song, choreo, mv, do a spate of music shows, see what hits if anything, maybe leverage concert dates if it does - but if not then done! next concept! move on and keep it moving - got to fill those music shows and if you don't constantly have new pieces to show you could lose attention and traction
but the general public in the u.s. is NOT socialized to all tune in to check out what's new at a certain time each week or whatever
only some check the charts and even that is mostly just to see where their personal fave is
what gp recognition goes by is repetition (that's one reason why radio is weighted so heavily in ratings- not fairly, but it's true): have we heard a song before? was it in the car on the way? was it in the club? was it in the music in the background at a store, at a party, on a friend's playlist?
when americans say they heard a song "everywhere" it means literally you could not escape it - and for that kind of feeling or environment to exist, it has to happen over *t i m e*
true, yes, sometimes a song takes off and gallops out of control like a wildfire catching but that is the exception not something that can be planned for or marketed into existence
and once you are a big enough name and have enough fans (us population @ 330 million so ... a lot more fans than it take to equal the same percentage of sales in sk ... so only a sliver of a percentage of that can mean a #1 bb hot 100) you CAN get that immediate-drop chart push
but most of the time, u.s. artists need to build up name recognition with the folks who wouldn't know a music chart if it popped up in their excel spreadsheets. that's why you get youtube reactors or even music business professionals months after release going oh i didn't know they even had an album/track/mv out
the larger a group, the longer it takes for things to disseminate past the early adopters and the media who watch them and the industry (nobody wants to be left behind, so journalists/talking heads are always like pets when you walk into the kitchen: heads on swivels in case it turns out relevant, and will write things just to be on top of a possible trend)
and this is where, i think, after watching hybe and its american arm try their push on jk, the kpop focalists are veering astray in their plans and projections: not seeing immediate huge success (or not *sustained* huge success) they think there is some kind of crisis rather than understanding that a u.s. or even just western gp fandom cannot be a top-down thing - it will take time
bts are huge (and yes a triumph for bts IS NOT and SHOULD not be lumped in as "a win" for kpop in general as has been pointed out is too often the case) but in the first days of jk's album release, *2 months* after seven had debuted, the huge nationwide retailer where i work couldn't even get his name spelled correctly in the point-of-sale database, so
the u.s. music industry is a big machine and busy on its own, many listeners only stay in their own bubbles and don't pay attention to anything outside that, because just keeping up with the output of one scene or genre can take as much effort as watching the kpop industry as a whole
to break wide you need to be either insanely ubiquitous and not just on social media (which runs the risk of people getting sick of you just as fast) or you need the slower groundswell of people going from "oh *that's* them? i heard of them but i didn't know that was their song" to "omg that's my song!! turn it up!"
there's just too much out there today to catch people's attention and the media cycle turns ever faster - used to, a song could be out and getting steady radio play and it still wouldn't hit the consciousness of the national public for like 3 or 4 months sometimes. sometimes it could take a year or more.
so this thing of short promotion periods for kpop acts - even bts! - is just not viable as a way to attract a wide gp following in the states. being on late night tv shows is a good step, but since the advent of streaming the influence of shows like that has waned considerably since the days of ed sullivan or johnny carson.
jk's run of promoting *was* the right kind of thing to do in fact - it simply should have been much more spread out over time. you can see all his album collab artists have things coming out *now* ... and there's no way to really take advantage of that with the curtailed promo.
and yes, obviously jk did get probably the second longest promo period of all of bts chapter 2 solos efforts (i think yg's tour ran longer?) and it was cut off for very valid reason! but!
i think bangpd et al. taking the fact that they couldn't make jk a household name in the u.s. nor nab him a grammy nom (nor any other kpop groups) within the 5-6 months of their fairly blatant push for us recognition as indicating a "crisis" is just not looking at the long game.
they didn't get all the accolades right away, so it seems they've decided 'that didn't work we need to make some big changes' instead of continuing what they'd been doing in support of the artists
it's this attitude of welp they didn't give us a grammy we were entitled to even though it's the first time we played ball in this particular way, so now we're worried bc we don't know how to shop kpop beyond people who aren't primed for it
like, they are looking at the business of it, and likely accurately, but not at the audience itself
it's not that the observations bang is making are wrong i just think he is basing them off premature information - songs in the u.s. DO benefit from purchase power, but they ALSO rely a lot on word of mouth. not for charts positions necessarily, but for longterm growth, support, and more importantly demand, you cannot beat a fandom that grows on its own.
the paid promotions at the end of the day serve the same purpose as bts's early days vlogs in the current western music climate - getting the artist and songs in front of as many eyes and ears as possible. but then you have to allow time for that wave to spread - and the bigger the pond, the more time it may take

I'm giffing the latest episode and I'm constantly stopping because I'm in awe of Chris's acting. I'm not as versed in this as @wen-kexing-apologist but it's so good that I just had to say something. The thing he can do with his face just blows my mind. The conversation with San Pang is great but for me it's the hair drying scene.
Tumblr media
We can only see his head and still it's all there in his face. I wish we could see his hands cause I'm sure they are not just resting on his lap. He can't really let himself relax here. All through the episode we can see on his face the fight that's going on in his head/heart that he finally gives voice to at the end of the episode.
Just like when he's in front of the mirror in the beginning and remembering what just happened and it's all there on his face. That clenching of the jaw. Just incredible.
Tumblr media
Anyway, he's amazing and I'm just in awe of this whole show.
Also since I'm here. Yuan has grown so much and Kurt is also doing an incredible job portraying that. Most time skips are just a thing that happens and it annoys me so much when you don't actually see it in the characters. But this one I believe it. I believe Yuan was away for 4 years. I can see it in him. The confidence, the boldness but also the calmness from coming to terms with his feelings and the fact that he can't force things, and what will be, will be. Incredible work on Kurt's part.

Usopp, smiling: okay, what poem is it today-
*Sanji literally sweeps him off his feet and carries him up to bed so Usopp can be the little spoon/teddy bear*
Usopp: uh
Sanji: I kept Luffy and Chopper away from the fridge most of the night. then I had to prep for breakfast. let me have this

Easter with König
It's another holiday, which means I'm going to make my favorite fictional Austrian go through the holidays as well. First was Fasching, now it's Easter! If I have to celebrate it, then so does König, except he gets to have a better time doing it!
I wouldn’t be surprised if you’d meet his family during Easter. It’s a tradition of his to go to his parents’ home during that time for a visit and a chat, he only sees them maybe twice a year, so he can appreciate having a small get together with them. He normally gets along well with his parents, but he’s lost most of the contact he had with them ever since he hit his mid 20’s, but he does look forward to seeing them. Naturally, he’d take you along for the ride, regardless of whether you actually know German or not. He can play interpreter for you, it’s not a problem for him. But if you know German already? All the better, that way his parents and you can just talk to each other with no problems. He does hope that you’ll get along with them, they did play an important part in his life when he was younger.
König genuinely hopes that you will like the traditional Osterjause*, though. He’s loved Easter for that reason, and for the freshly baked lambs, but mostly for the best Brettljause*. In fact, he’s probably called his mother two weeks before his visit to let her know what kind of meat and sausages to get for him and you as well so that there shall be plenty to go around. If you’re not from around, then you likely don’t know what a “Gsöchts”* or “Schweinsbratn”* is, but he will assure you that it’s something delicious. König could rave on and on about that one farmer’s “Hauswiaschtl”. In fact, if he can, he’d love to go to the farmer’s market on Friday with you just so he can get you something to eat. Not above grabbing some Bauernbrot* and Krenn* either while he’s at it. Mans needs his Krenn when eating his Osterjause. Although it will have been a while since he’s seen everyone, he will introduce you to all the farmers there since he knows a good chunk of them growing up.
Naturally, he’ll be drinking a few beers here and there as well. He’s Austrian, it’s in his blood. Will have you try everything off the plate, from the Nuss* to the low-fat Karree*. Loves having you with him and will actively try to involve you in any conversation there may be so that you get to talk as well. Again, it might be a bit awkward if you don’t know any German, especially since he’s not the most reliable translator, but you’ll get by somehow. His parents have been curious about you for a while now anyway and have been wanting to meet you.
Although he claims to be far too old for that sort of thing, he wouldn’t mind looking for an “Osterkerberl”* with you. It’s a nice tradition that he used to love as a child and he wants you to experience Austrian Easter with him, so he likely asked his mother to hide one for you somewhere around the yard so you can go find it. She won’t give you any clues as to where it could be found. It’s childish, but it’s a lot of fun. In fact, if König were to ask her to prepare a Kerberl* for you, then chances are she prepared one for him as well, for old time’s sake. And then the both of you, two fully grown adults, will run around the yard, looking for the basket. Once you found it, you had to admit it was rather cute, filled with a few hand painted eggs, some colorful chocolate, a baked lamb and some crafted chicks and bunnies. Clearly, his mother put in a lot of thought into what goes into such a small basket. In fact, even the “grass” was made of edible paper, it seemed.
König would feel somewhat stupid, looking for a basket of all things during Easter, but it did remind him of his childhood, so he wouldn’t outwardly complain. Besides, you walking up to him, all happy with your little basket, does something to him. The sight was just too adorable, so he’d likely ask you, the master sleuth, to assist him in his hunt. Once you’ve both found them, you’d return back to his parents’ apartment and continue just chatting while occasionally eating a bit of the Jause*.

Let's discuss the headcanon that devil fruit users heal quicker. It's not canon (that we know of) but I think it's a logical and fun thought.
We know devil fruit users are human but I personally love to think that there's benefits that we don't see. Higher stamina, quicker healing, sturdier bones, tougher skin, etc.
The human body is incredibly adaptable and I would think the devil fruits would alter the body in a way that would help the user survive. Plus I feel like it's not going to give you a badass power up without making sure that you can handle it.
So with that thought, how does it feel as a devilfruit user when you heal quickly and your crew does not?
Let's go a little further with the strawhat crew.
Zoro, Usopp, and Nami are human. They're not devil fruit users, they have no genetic advantages, and they have no modifications.
They are human in a way that the rest of the crew is not.
So I like the idea of Zoro, Nami, and Usopp having their own little bond. Taking a little longer to completely heal, more prone to bruises, more likely to scar, the ones that get sick easiest or most frequent, etc.
Like devilfruit users around the sea. It's nothing to be ashamed of, just something to be aware of.
Humanity is something powerful to bond over. Power and weakness are also, both very powerful things to bond over.
I think devilfruit users have an understanding between them all that comes from being a devil fruit user.
The feeling of losing the touch of the sea
The vulnerability of being surrounded by something beyond your control
The knowledge that you are a threat in a way someone without a devil fruit will rarely be
So it makes sense that it goes the opposite way too.
Non devil fruit users also have a understanding between each other.
They hold the promise of safety and of bearing the touch of the sea when devil fruit users cannot
They are familiar with the risk of being discarded.
For example: Luffy could learn how to be a swordsman if he wanted to. He may not have the training or natural talent but he could still be very good if he decided to really commit. Zoro can never learn how to be rubber.
Killer can never learn how to control metal
Penguin can never learn how to manipulate space
Thatch could never have learned how to be a phoenix
Tashigi can never learn how to become smoke
Deuce could never have learned how to become fire
So on like that.
I feel like that would be kind of scary sometimes...How easily you could potentially be replaced. How easily you could become obsolete.
Of course, that doesn't stop anyone. They all work to improve, to be needed and wanted. They all have dreams and motivation to be better. To be the best.
There's also that unrelenting trust between crew members that allows someone the safety net of being able to fail, get back on your feet, and try again.
With the strawhat crew, we know that most of the crew will be the best or is the best at what they do.
However, I think there's always going to be that feeling that someone is right at your heels and getting even closer.
There will be other swordsmen. There will be other navigators. There will be other sharpshooters.
Zoro, Nami and Usopp understand that. And the crew is close enough to know that even when they're old and the world starts to bring forth younger people to replace them, they will always be the best to Luffy and each other.
I just think this would be a fun trio to explore.

so i...started another fic? the idea just wouldn't leave my mind i had to
Summary: Edwin discovered Aziraphale's bookshop sometime not long after it opened and sometimes takes Charles along when he goes there. Aziraphale is aware of this but as long as they don't damage anything, he is fine with the two ghost boys spending time in between his rows of bookcases.
I plan this to be something of an Outsider POV thing but in both directions while the plot of Good Omens and Dead Boy Detectives happens somewhere in the background.

Gator Tillman is so Tragic (5x9 Spoilers)
I think what happened to Gator in the last episode makes him such a tragic character when you consider that he saw his father turning his back on him as something worse than getting his eyes gouged out.
We have Dot's belief that Gator could have been good person if he wasn't raised by his father, providing some insight and backstory for the first time in the episode "Linda". She knew him before his mother left and saw how growing up with Roy after all those years changed him for the worst. Telling him the truth about what his father really thinks of him, how Roy saw Gator as a disappointment from the moment he was born, only for Gator to see it as a lie, already says a lot about his warped perspective and how it influences his actions.
As the episodes passed, it became more and more clear that Gator's whole personality was centered around being someone his father could be proud of, regardless of what he himself actually cared about or believed. His entire life, unbeknownst to him, has been aimed towards meeting an impossible standard while constantly being enabled by the cult like community of the Tillman Ranch.
He doesn't see the things he does as wrong, even though he knows others do, because he really doesn't care about anyone's opinion other than his father's.
He's had multiple chances to change, but never took them. His misguided sense of loyalty to Roy had him making the same bad choices over and over with the only goal of getting his approval. You could see there were moments when he knew he was doing something wrong, and even seemed a little reflective, but then he just pushes past any unease because the ends justify the means in his eyes. He'll be a terrible person, do and say things that cross the line, but to him, it's worth it if he can be useful to his father.
So when he stumbles back home, blinded and useless, begging for some comfort from the man he devoted himself to, only to be ignored and told to shut up, he's truly in shock. Like I think that's when it really hits him how little his father actually cared about him as a person. He was able to dismiss the warning signs and evidence from others before this because he had such blind faith in him. It makes sense that what Dot said about why he was named Gator messed him up so badly. He he may have wondered why he was different than his brothers, may have even told himself that he was special because of it, but Dot's revelation struck a nerve because it was plausible. It made him doubt his father for a moment, which made him angry enough to lash out at Dot with words he knew would cut.
That moment revealed his worst fear, that he wouldn't be loved if he wasn't useful. That he was always a loser and a disappointment to his father. To have that fear validated when he was left alone and vulnerable in the field definitely broke something in him, and I believe that final dismissal will become Roy's ultimate downfall.
Gator has shown that he can't let things go, especially when his pride is hurt, and considering he's basically lost all hope of being someone in his father's eyes, he'll probably be a key witness to all of his father's crimes over the years. He won't be doing this as a way to redeem himself, because again, he doesn't actually care about getting forgiveness for anything he's said or done, but because he's hurt and vindictive enough to implicate himself as long as it means that Roy's life will be ruined forever too.
He's never taken the opportunity to be a good person, so I doubt he'll start now. He's also never responded well with being disrespected and once the shock wears off, he probably won't think twice about fucking over his father in any way he can out of spite. I wouldn't be surprised if he straight up lies and says he was forced to commit those crimes on his father's behalf out of fear of death, or claiming that his father was the one who blinded him while shamelessly playing the sympathy card.
Gator Tillman is both a terrible and tragic person, so whatever happens, the fallout is going to be so interesting to watch in the upcoming finale.

There's this moment in the episode last night that got me. It was small, but it hit me for some reason. When Joel yells Tommy, and they run towards each other and hug, it shows Ellie. And she looks... off. Upset. At first, I thought it was jealousy, and maybe it is a bit. Because Joel is hers and only hers and has been for months now. But I watched the episode again this morning and saw something different. Fear. I saw fear. She is terrified that now that Joel has his "real" family back, he's gonna get rid of her. Find some way to dump her on someone else. And then he does! He does the thing she was afraid of, and that's why she gets so angry at him in that bedroom. Because she thought they were in this together. She doesn't understand that he is doing it because he is terrified of losing her. She didn't hear the whole conversation between Joel and Tommy (at least I don't think she did), just the tail end of it. All she knows is her worst fear is coming true. She's going to end up alone, again. She doesn't get why Joel is doing it. And that's why she doesn't need an apology from Joel the next morning and is ready to sweep it under the rug. Because Joel isn't leaving her or pawning her off on Tommy. He's going with her, and it's all going to be okay. Because she has Joel, and that's all she needs.
It also made the scene where she is crying and begging him to get up that much worse. Because she thought they won. She got Joel back, it was them against the world, and everything was going to be okay. They talk, and she rests her head on his shoulder, and everything is going to be fine. Except now, it won't be. Because Joel is dying and he won't wake up, and she is so scared because she Can't. Fix. This. She doesn't know what to do or where to go, or how to save him. She just knows that she is 14 and her dad is dying, and she is powerless to stop it. She thought they won; she thought they won.

With Uluru Games event finally hitting global, we're having round two of the discussion on the new skins and how much talk of "they wouldn't wear this" or "it's clearly pandering"
While I agree to those statements, I also wanna entertain being a devil's advocate in saying that... Dikke would totally wear that. Like, not as a casual thing, but you gotta understand that if she were to participate in the Uluru games, she must abide by the dress code. And, yeah it's far more "modernizes" to appeal to people just to purchase them, but have you seen the female sport uniforms it's based on? The women actually do wear bloomers of some kind. The top and how squished and exaggerated her proportions became are my biggest gripe out of the design.
There's also a lot of topics on the fact their artstyle gave Dikke and Tooth Fairy some "enhancements" to parts and I agree that's unnecessary, but also I like to be delusional and believe they've been given proper support on their chest for the sport activities if you can even consider whatever tf straps is on Dikke to be support.
Overall, I do say some parts of the designs are in poor taste and clearly meant to boost the "appeal" to get people to buy them, but also y'all have me confused as to why people think Dikke wouldn't wear a uniform regulated by the event she's participating in. Reservations over it aside, she's there to throw a heavy ass javelin at the end of the day; controversial outfit for a medieval era woman or not.

The River of Procrastination
You are standing on a boat.
You don't know why you're standing on a boat.
Glancing around, you see that other people are also aboard this boat, or ship, you don't know which to call it. You can see tall sails stretching high above you, but something is strange. They are fully unfurled, but the cloth hangs limply, with no wind to catch.
"Hey there," a voice calls out to you, unhurried and laid back, as if greeting a friend you see each day. You turn and see a man standing behind the wheel of the ship, dressed in a navy blue coat and a special hat on his head. "Welcome aboard, enjoy your voyage."
You blink at the captain--because who else could he be?--not fully understanding. "Where are we going?" you ask.
"Ah, that's a question only ya can answer," the Captain smiles, lazy and lopsided.
"I don't understand."
The Captain nods. One-handed, he turns the wheel and the ship complies, adjusting to match his course. then he lets go and the ship returns to where it had been before. "Didn't expect ya to. Mayhaps you should have a look around and see if you can remember for yarself," he suggests.
You frown, because he's right--shouldn't you know where you're going? You thank the man and step away, exploring the odd little ship. And it is odd, you decide quickly. There is no other crew besides the Captain. There are only other passengers. Some of them look just as confused as you, others seem to be in a panic, pacing back and forth as they fret. There didn't seem to be an age limit either, both children and adults of all ages loitering on the deck.
"There's no current," you finally say to the Captain. "Nor are we moving. Where are we going?"
The Captain chuckles. "You're just missing the point, friend. We are going somewhere, but nowhere productive. Go take another look."
You do, growing slightly frustrated with all of this. You cross your arms on the deck railing, staring out at the reedy bank as you pass by. It wasn't even a nice day for a boat ride. The sun was completely hidden by thick, looming clouds, heaving with rain. You feel like any moment something is going to tip and you'll be caught in a storm.
Somehow, it feels like it's a thing of your own making. If you were just not on this stupid boat, you wouldn't get rained on.
Sighing, you look back at the river bank, seeing a cute little dock with a canoe tied to a post. You smile at it, keeping your eyes on it until it disappears around the bank. You turn your face away and into the non-existent breeze. Maybe, if the wind was actually blowing, you would feel like you were getting somewhere.
Time passes without your notice, your feet rooted to the deck as you stare out at the reeds. Birds flitter between them, calling out sweetly to each other. Another little dock comes into view, with another canoe tied to it, the red of its paint reflecting off the still waters perfectly.
This one passes too.
Then another.
Until you notice that they were not different docks with different canoes but the same one, over and over again.
"Captain," you call, "we're going in circles."
The Captain laughs. "Aye, that we are. This ship won't go anywhere else. If you want to actually get anywhere, you have to step off."
"That doesn't make any sense."
"It does if you know the name of this river," the Captain retorts with a grin. Like before, all of his movements are slow and done seemingly without effort.
"And what's that?"
His grin turns a little more mischievous. "Procrastination."
You blink. "If this is the River of Procrastination, wouldn't we not be moving at all? You never get anywhere when you procrastinate."
"Ah, but that isn't quite true. Aye, it seems like you're at a standstill, but something is always chugging on in the background. Time, for one thing," the Captain adds, pointing at one of the people pacing on the deck.
They look haggard, hair disarray and biting their nails. Suddenly they gasp and point ahead. "Turn around! There's a waterfall!" they yell.
Alarmed, you rush to the front, looking over the bow to see...nothing.
"'Fraid I can't do that, friend. You're gonna have to get off yourself. Or get someone to row you to safety," the Captain tells the panicked person.
Slowly, you walk back to the captain, watching the person become more and more frantic. Finally, they seem to snap and dove off the side of the ship.
No one tries to stop them.
The Captain gently adjusts their course.
"Why did they see a waterfall?" you ask.
"Ran out of time," the Captain answers easily. "Whatever they were avoiding, it caught up to them."
"Ah."
The Captain hums in agreement and leans both arms over the wheel. He links his fingers together loosely. "So, what are you avoiding?"
