Every time I remember that Wen Ning was supposed to die but the author couldn’t find a good way for it to happen so he got to live… I get unreasonably happy. Let my guy continue to live indefinitely as an undead creature. He deserves it.

Gods this fandom sometimes, I swear. I'm sorry I read two deeply bad takes back to back, and I have to rant. I'm sure others have said it better than I, but really. Come on. I actually have to wonder if people who talk about the extras actually read them because...
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji didn't leave the cultivation world in canon. They elope, and then they come back. The fact they're not involved in the bigger politics is... pretty much to be expected, but they very much do participate in the day to day lives of the Lan sect. They go where the chaos is to night hunt, they teach, Lan Wangji comforts his brother in his seclusion, and Wei Wuxian meets some new Lan disciples.
As for the cottage fantasy... Again, I honestly have to wonder if the people talking about it actually read the extra it's in? Because it's just that. A fantasy. A dream. It's basically a representation of Wei Wuxian's wants for a domestic life, something he definitely has now! He's always been characterised as someone who wants to help others and who loves cultivation. Why would you think the dream is to be taken literally?
And the idea that Wei Wuxian has 'several important relationships just floating there', that he's not dealing with... Where? Which ones? He teaches the juniors and grows closer to Jin Ling. He doesn't exactly interact with Lan Xichen, but he asks after him. He meets Mianmian again and wishes her well. He asks after Wen Ning after Lan Sizhui comes back then has some father-son bonding moments with him!
Nie Huaisang and Wei Wucian aren't close. They were friendly once, but they didn't ever meet after the lectures. I don't see how that qualifies as an "important" relationship, especially with Nie Huaisang never openly admitting to his part in Wei Wuxian's resurrection. But even then, Wei wuxian says he'll be keeping a close eye on him, so one can imagine they meet again at some point.
As for Jiang Cheng... what more do you want Wei Wuxian to do exactly? Even if you want a reconciliation, why can't Jiang Cjeng be he one to actually grow up and do the work for once? He's the one who never apologized. He's the one who is still openly hostile in the extras. If Wei Wuxian wants to move on and not interact with him, he's well within his right to do that, given how Jiang Cheng treated him. Hell, he's more generous than most since he encourages Jin Ling to talk to Jiang Cheng. If I'd been treated by someone like Jiang Cheng treated Wei Wuxian and saw him hit our nephew several times, I certainly wouldn't encourage them to meet. (But that's Wei Wuxian for you, the moral ideal and better than all of us.)
Anyway, I really don't understand why people insist on making Wangxian have a sadder ending than the one they actually did. It's a HEA for them, sorry guys. And yeah, maybe Wei wuxian has some trauma to work on... but the whole point of the character is that he doesn't let his trauma define him. That he wants to forgives, forgets and moves on.
(Also, just because he doesn't have a breakdown or the cultivation equivalent of therapy in the extra doesn't mean he's not working on them? He finally is at peace, with a solid support network. Maybe he does talk about his past hurts with Lan Wangji - Lan Wangji certai ly knows when to comfort him when he needs it. But the narrative point of the extras is to show they're moving on from the past! And you know what, sometimes the beat thing to do to heal is to do just that. They're living their best lives, deal with it.)
And finally... shit did you really read the whole book and come to the conclusion Wei Wuxian should have 'learned to accept help'? Who the fuck offered help? Who did he refuse?
(Don't say Lan Wangji. 1) I love him, but "Come back to Gusu" is very much not an obvious offer to help, and when Wei Wuxian understandably misunderstands him, he never manages to correct it.
And 2) once Wei Wuxian tells him explicitly he's not leaving the Wen remnants behind, Lan Wangji understands and backs off. He approves! I'm sure he'd do more if he could, but just like Jiang Yanli, he can't!)
Jiang Cheng literally said, 'No one will help you, no one is on your side' (and then made sure that was true by saying Wei Wuxian was the enemy of the cultivation world). Jin Zixuan chose to ask the one who was ambushed to disarm rather than the 300 cultivators attacking him and lunged at him when Wei Wuxian refused to comply (because he'd be killed if he did!!). How is that help?
Who else tried to help? Whose help did Wei Wuxian reject?
Wei Wuxian was presented with a series of bad choices and took the best he could, the ones aligned with his principles, accepting he'd have to face consequences at some point but also knowing it was still worth it. He's not the one who failed or made a fatal mistake or betrayed his word.
Rant over. Sorry about that.

I’ll never shut up about how much I respect MXDX as a writer, she’s just THAT amazing and writes beautifully. She’s so good at writing different kind of character developments depending on the age and it’s particularly flagrant in MDZS.
Tumblr media
Im just so found of how in the present of the story all the adults, the ones that were old enough during the whole Wei Wuxian ascension, Burial Mounds etc etc, have such deep rooted opinions. They lived through what WWX did and will never forget, they’ll teach the younger generations how dangerous and bad him and his cultivation were and that if he ever came back around the world needs to reunite to beat him again.
But ! Some juniors (and I’m mainly talking about Sizhui, Jingyi and Jin Ling since they’re the main ones) have been in direct contact with Wei Wuxian for a fairly good amount of time. They didn’t know it was him, either not suspecting it could be him at all or just not believing it could be WWX in Mo Xuanyu’s body.
They’re still so very young, just about 15, and they are still capable to build their own opinions and views on things. Despite their educations young people tend to trust what they see since they don’t have experience, what they’re seeing right now is what will be considered and experience and proof when they grow up. As for the adults they only believe what they saw in the past, what was their own experiences when they were young themselves.
Sizhui never doubted Wei Wuxian. When they all got kidnapped and WWX, Lan Zhan and Wen Ning came to save them he knew deep in his heart that Wei Wuxian would have never done it. He saw with his own eyes how he took care of them, how he saved them time and time again, how he put himself in danger for them. He’s still young and not yet entirely influenced by the elders, he still has a mind of his own and now that he witnessed the good, caring and mischievous side of WWX he has his own strong opinion (seeing Lan Zhan trust him so utterly must have helped a lot too).
Jin Ling is in a very dire position compared to the Lan Juniors. His parents are dead because of Wei Wuxian and his uncle hates him more than anyone. He grew up seeing the hatred that Jiang Cheng has for WWX, he was educated to brandish his sword to him if he ever came across him. But just like Sizhui and Jingyi he saw Wei Wuxian with his own two eyes, he saw him tease him and take care of him, he witnessed how despite what terrible thing he did in the past he still has a good heart deep within him and that guilt and grief are still driving him.
He is torn between what he was taught to believe, what his family taught him about someone that he should consider as the devil himself and what his heart itself learned and believes, that in the end he is the one that saved him and took care of him when his own uncle would have threatened to beat the shit out of him.
Wei Wuxian is a good mentor, as mischievous as he can be he also knows how to teach (surprisingly). He makes experiences into lessons in a very endearing way for the juniors, he teaches them through life itself and not through oh so boring lessons.
The juniors, no matter how much they mock him and insult him, appreciate him. He’s a good person, he’s social and nice to have around, he makes everything more bearable for everyone. They were able through their own experiences with him to build their own judgment. Either it will align with their mentor/family or it will not, but no matter what they’ll never fully hate Wei Wuxian the way the elders do.

LIKE A PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES......: UNTAMED FIC REC PART 5
WELL HOWDY YALL! HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO THOSE WHO CELEBRATE! In my last fic rec, published on February 12, 2021, I made a joke about how one day I would get a job and wouldn’t be able to read 856 fics a day. I started another fic rec on April 21, 2021, and then promptly got my job back in early May, causing the fic rec to remain abandonded in my google docs for a year and a half. In that time I’ve moved across the country, settled in a new city, stanned BTS, and had many incredible professional and personal opportunities. And where has all of that brought me? Right back to untamed fic, apparently. This past week i got the itch and have been consuming untamed fic at unprecedented rates, which has inspired me to blow the e-dust off of my abandoned untamed fic rec, add in the shit i’ve read since then, and present it to you; anyone who still cares about the untamed in November 2022! (But mostly this is for @kerasines, who enouraged me to do this, and @jlf23tumble, who all of my fic recs are for, always.)
The rules to this rec are the same, but since it’s been a minute: these are in no particular order, they’re mostly wangxian, my favorites are marked with asterisks, and if you read any of these you are contractually obligated to come discuss them with me.
[jungkook bts voice] let’s get it!
The Fire Lapping Up the Creek by notevenyou (Wangxian, E, 66k) ***
Wei Wuxian travels to Lanling for his nephew’s one-month celebration alone, without Wen Ning.
Lan Wangji lives with the consequences.
Canon divergence au where lwj ends up joining the wen settlement and things play out differently from there. OKAY. Okay. I think this might be the last of the Really Big Fics in the fandom that I put off reading for whatever reason and GOD. DAMN. I should not have put off reading this. There is a reason this fic is Big and it’s because its SO GOOD!!!! One of those fics where every single chapter had me gasping out loud, crying real tears, and re-reading full paragraphs bc they were so GOOD. AHHHH!
2022 note: Some of these fics i havent returned to in the year and half since i was ass-deep in the untamed fandom. This is not one of those fics. This is a true, bonafide Classic that I’ve reread multiple times, and been impressed by every single time.
Last note: it wouldn’t be me if i didnt embarrass myself fully in a fic rec, but this author also has an absolutely AMAZING bts namgi fic if that’s something you’re into...actually...all of their bts fics are incredible...
Still in the Water by airgeer (Jin Ling & Lan Sizhui, background Wangxian, T, 45k)
A year after Jin Ling's early succession to the position of Sect Leader, a letter is delivered to him under strange circumstances. A night-hunt follows.
Hanguang-Jun shook his head, and played again. This time, the response was slower, almost coy.
“What did it say?” Jin Ling asked.
“Hanguang-Jun asked what it was doing here,” Lan Sizhui translated. “The response was ‘Waiting.’”
HOLY SHIT. this fic…..is bonkers. It’s another extremely interesting and action-packed case fic. Written in Jin Ling’s perspective, strange forces have been gathering the sect leaders to a strange town where they have to solve a mystery. When i tell you, this fic was the first ever untamed fic to made me cry for non-romance related reasons. It’s SO intense, and SO high-stakes my hands were literally SWEATING reading this shit. 10/10, would let it give me a panic attack again.
After the Final Rose by azurewaxwing (Wangxian, E, 55k)
(A talking-head interview. JIN ZIXUN, 36, entrepreneur.)
JZX: Oh, yeah, he’s a fucking catch, alright. He’s rich, he’s hot, he’s a Lan. Like, he’s been ranked number two among the local bachelors for years, and now that his brother’s seeing someone, he’s number one, right? So, yeah, of course I want to win.
Offscreen voice: Do you know anything else about him, besides that he’s rich and hot?
JZX: (shrugging) What else is there to know?
In which Lan Wangji agrees, reluctantly, to be The Bachelor, only to fall in love with Wei Wuxian, his cameraman/producer. Can the Bachelor find his way to a happy ending? And will The Bachelor: Lan Wangji be a ratings hit?
UM LMFAO!!!!!!!! Have I ever watched the bachelor in my entire life? Absolutely not. Was this au well written, thoughtfully planned out, and extremely interesting enough to make me not care? Yes oh my GOD!!!!!!!!!! I fully screamed through the entirety of this fic because it was so FUN!
too much, not enough by Shamelesscooper (Wei Wuxian/Jiang Cheng, E, 14k)
“Okay, so good news!” Wei Wuxian says, swanning into the room with just enough energetic cheer that Jiang Cheng knows whatever it is he’s going to say is going to be awful. “We figured out the nature of your curse! You’re probably not going to die! It’s not even going to hurt!”
“Yeah? And what’s the bad news?” Jiang Cheng gruffs, crossing his arms over his chest.
Wei Wuxian does a double-take, like he’d expected his (fake) good mood to fool Jiang Cheng. Like it’s ever managed to fool Jiang Cheng. His laugh is a little shrill, a little frenetic as he says, “Well, uh. You know our ghost friend back there? Yeah, she’s possessing you. Which is why...” He makes a gesture at the general area of Jiang Cheng’s... problem.
“Ah,” Jiang Cheng said, expression souring. “I’m not going to like the cure, am I?”
“You’re not going to like the cure,” Wei Wuxian nods.
-
Jiang Cheng gets cursed on a nighthunt. Wei Wuxian helps him with the cure.
It’s not one of my fic recs if there isn’t at least one (1) fic i feel deeply ashamed for reccing. Here’s that fic for this rec! Post-canon Jiang Cheng gets hit with a sex curse and wangxian, who are married, agree that wwx is the best one to help him out. This was very well written and made me very emotional and i’m always a sucker for yunmeng bros reconciliation, even if it’s in a form that could get me hashtag canceled.
Three Days and a Morning by snickersnacker (Wangxian, E, 14k)
“Do you know how annoying you are sometimes?” Lan Wangji asked, not unplayfully.
Wei Wuxian beamed. “Do you know how stodgy you are sometimes?” he replied.
“How stodgy was this?” Lan Wangji said with a tiny smirk, referring to what they’d just done together in bed.
Wei Wuxian conceded the point. “This has to be against at least one of your rules,” he replied.
Lan Wangji looked suddenly serious. “There are no rules against love.”
---
Between the lines of episodes 42-43, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji return to Cloud Recesses and finally figure things out.
Another episode 43 canon-divergence au that i really really enjoyed! Highlights of this one include wangxian crying about how much they love each other and a very fun sex scene, both of which are just *chefs kiss*
Let's take a ride round the curves of desire by feyburner (Wangxian, E, 5k)
Wei Ying was sprawled on the floor in front of the oscillating fan when Lan Zhan got home from work.
I’m still mad at feyburner for starting that really good wangxian star trek au and then never finishing it, BUT. this sweet little wlw!wangxian ficlet asuages the anger in my heart just a little bit.
2022 note: THE WANGXIAN STAR TREK AU HAS BEEN FINISHED AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
i will be soft in your heart by martyrsdaughter (Juniors OT4, E, 11k)
"You've been sitting on this," he said, "for five years? A little warning would be nice!"
Sizhui's responding look was somehow both wicked and absolutely serene. Jingyi saw some of Zewu-Jun in it, which made him just... unfair. Unjust! Ridiculous! So attractive he once again wondered why he'd ever been invited to this relationship. Zizhen was there for moral support, obviously, and because he was too sweet to resist. Jingyi offered little of that.
"I didn't think you were unaware," Sizhui pointed out, as though he were merely reminding him of a pressing appointment. "After our last visit to Koi Tower, did you not ask me to, quote, 'fuck you until you forgot what Jin Ling's forearms look like'?"
I can’t believe this is the first ever juniors foursome fic i've ever come across bc the material is RIGHT there, but it’s fine bc i've found it now! General plot is Jingyi/Sizhui/Zizhen have all been in a throuple for a while and finally get Jin Ling to join and it’s very cute and sweet and i love all my cute sweet boys!
The Ritual by nightwalker (Wangxian, E, 12k)
Lan Xichen asks Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji to participate in a ritual for the protection of the Cloud Recesses. There may be some ulterior motives going on.
Wangxian have semi-not-really-public sex for the greater good of the Gusu Lan, as you do.
Crack me open, pour you out by Tenillypo (Wangxian, E, 16k)
"Lan Zhan," Wei Ying says carefully, "do you truly not know you have been speaking?"
Lan Wangji claps a hand to his mouth and, to his horror, feels his mouth opening to answer despite having no intention to do so. Clamping it shut again takes a great effort.
OR
The one where Lan Wangji can't stop talking, and a mild amount of chaos ensues.
I bet you were like “damn, this far into a fic rec from liv and not a SINGLE post-canon-get-together-via-a-curse fic?” YOU FOOL. here it is! Lwj gets cursed to speak his mind! Three guesses as to what’s on lwj’s mind :)
can’t turn off what turns me on by sophiahelix (Yizhan, E, 2k)
The phone screen goes black, and he lies next to Yibo, feeling like he’s been turned inside out. As far as porn goes, it was barely even explicit, but the intimacy of the scene and knowing it’s something Yibo likes enough to watch over and over have left him stunned, not sure what to do next.
At long last, Xiao Zhan licks his lips. “That’s — what you want?”
It was so simple, but he can tell Yibo’s embarrassed as he clears his throat and mutters, “yeah.”
YIZHAN! For whatever reason, this smutty little yizhan one shot has stayed on. my. mind. And i’m not even someone who’s big into daddy kink. The power of sophiahelix i guess! WAIT SPEAKING OF…
yesterday, tomorrow by sophiahelix (Yizhan, E, 80k) ***
Before he’s even finished reading, Xiao Zhan knows this is the script, the one that could alter the course of his career. Not like Chen Qing Ling changed his life six years ago, catapulting him from a minor idol to a household name, or the way his more serious roles have slowly taken him to the upper echelons of dramatic actors. This is a love story, daring and bold, groundbreaking and unforgettable, if only he’s brave enough to do it.
So of course, eventually, they bring up the idea of casting Yibo as his lover.
In the summer of 2025, Xiao Zhan and Yibo reunite as the leads in a gay indie film, bringing their complicated offscreen history with them—and secret hopes of making things right.
AUTHOR SOPHIAHELIX DESERVES A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR THIS FIC. yo……. YO……. The premise is that yizhan are back together to film a gay indie movie where they play lovers SO IM SURE YOU CAN GUESS WHERE THIS IS GOING. Boy howdy. This might damn well be one of my favorite fics of all time. I know some people aren’t into super long fics but if ever there were one i would urge you to give a shot, it’s this one. *lady gaga voice* talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular
2022 note: a year and a half later and i still think about this fic CONSTANTLY. i just think.......2025........it could happen.........
Pins and Needles by kisahawklin (Wangxian/Wen Ning, E, 7k)
Wei Wuxian works out how to give Wen Ning various sensory experiences. Of course this was always going to lead to sex.
It’s my fic rec and i’ll rec wangxian/wen ning fic if i want!!!!!!! I just think there’s nothing wrong with Wen Ning being appreciated in the way he deserves! Wen Ning stans make some NOISE!!!!!!!!!!
Lucky man by Onomatopoetikon (Wangxian, E, 3k)
“They really wore you down this time, huh, Lan Zhan?” Wei Ying asks as he removes the elaborate headpieces from Lan Wangji’s hair after dinner, his nimble fingers unlocking clasps and unpinning needles.
“Mn” he agrees, almost falling asleep already. “Good to be home.”
“It’s good to have you home” Wei Ying says, running his fingers through Lan Wangji’s freed hair and planting a kiss at the crown of his head. “Good to have you where I can take care of you.”
---
Lan Wangji returns home after some particularly exhausting Chief Cultivator duties. Luckily, Wei Ying takes care of him.
Just a lil tender love and pwp ! I think it’s nice for lwj to have a nice time with his husband who he’s very much in love with. Feels good on my heartstrings!
with intent by Lirazel (Wangxian, E, 10k)
Under other circumstances, it would make no sense for a healthy young cultivator’s golden core to be overwhelmed by mere cold, much less for qi infusions to be fruitless. But these caves and the tunnels that connect them are no ordinary place. This attack on Wei Ying--because that’s what it has to be--is intentional: this place, suffused with the presence of Lan Wangji’s ancestors, is attacking the presence of a stranger as automatically as a guard attacks a thief in the night.
The forehead ribbon isn’t enough.
After wangxian handfast in the cold pond cave to get past the Lan ancestors, lwj realizes that just tying their hands wasnt enough, they have to consummate their fake marriage :)
The dreamers. by orange_crushed (Wangxian, E, 17k) ***
“Stop mothering me,” Wei Ying protests. “Why don’t you ever listen?” He scowls at Wangji, but then the lure of the clean water is too much; he sits grumbling and strips off his vambraces and loosens the collar of his robes and wipes himself down in the steam. Wangji sits on a stool and watches him, and after a while Wei Ying slaps the rag into the bowl and glares back. “Are you going to sit and stare the whole time?” he demands. “You want to see me strip naked and give my filthy evil self a good scrubbing, huh?”
Yes, Wangji thinks.
[This is a story about a horrible war and a beautiful dream; about grabbing happiness where you can find it, and not letting go.]
An EXTREMELY interesting canon-divergence au where wangxian use a mindlinking spell early on in their relationship to fight better together but the connection between them is too strong and the spell doesn’t dissipate so they stay linked through the rest of canon. This one also had me gasping out loud on multiple occasions.
2022 note: this has been a Frequently Revisited Fic over the past year and a half, it is just as shocking and intriguing every single time!
From my heart's ground. by orange_crushed (Wangxian, E, 38k)
After a while he can feel a palm against his face, gentle fingers soft and soothing. It’s not real, not exactly: he can tell the difference between a ghost’s touch and a living person’s, between a spirit-vision and an overactive imagination. His education has been thorough. But the beating has also been thorough, so for now he forgets what he knows and leans into it, into the hand cupping his cheek. It’s soft and dry as those forgotten petals, as the touch of a pillow. He can smell wildflowers, can taste blood and dirt. My baby, his mother says, and he closes his eyes. My treasure. He barely remembers the sound of her voice, but the feeling of it is just the same. Just the same as ever.
[In which Lan Wangji loses almost everything, plants a garden, and grows a second chance.]
Holy fucking shit, i just realized that this one and the last one are by the same person. Author orange_crush has an absolute GIFT for mind-boggling canon-divegence aus oh my GOD. This one is lwj post-wwx’s death discovering some of his mother’s old things in the jingyi and using them to extremely surprising results. I think about how crazy and brilliant this fic is literally all of the time. Insanity. I love it.
bless my soul (i'm losing control) by aroceu (Wangxian, E, 31k) ***
Wei Wuxian returns from the Burial Mounds as a vampire.
WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN. A full canon-divergence au following vampire wwx post-burial mounds. I’ll give you one guess as to who offers to be his lil juice box :) Little known fact about me, i LOVE a good vampire au, and am frankly astounded that this is the first one i've come across for wangxian, but i’m not complaining bc this one fucking SLAPS. I’ve read it three times.
2022 update: i’ve read this WAY more than three times at this point
Brilliant Mistake by brooklinegirl (Wangxian, E, 53k) ***
"Fine," Wen Qing says, turning back to Wei Ying. "You're pregnant."
Lan Zhan feels his mouth drop open and has to work to shut it.
Wei Ying reacts not at all. He's swinging his feet where he's sitting on the table, a bored expression on his face.
Wen Qing just looks at him. "I am not joking about that."
Wei Ying stops swinging his feet. He blinks several times in a row. "Wait," he says.
Or:
I woke up at 3AM and sent myself an email that just said:
Modern cultivation friends curse sexy pollen hook up desperate WWX gets pregnant
And then I wrote it. In three weeks. IDK.
[deep shuddering inhale] MY NEW FAVORITE FIC, BITCH!!!!!!!! Remember back when i was like “omg so weird that i read a wangxian mpreg au, i’m never into mpreg aus.” and “omg so weird that i read a wangxian modern au, i’m almost never into modern aus” well when i’m wrong, i’m wrong. If brooklinegirl wants to write a modern cultivation mpreg curse fic then OF COURSE I WILL READ IT. What i didnt expect was for it to be so good that i read it FIVE (5) more times. But sometimes that’s just how life goes. If you’ll excuse me, i’m going to go read this again.
2022 note: according to ao3 I’ve now read this FOURTEEN TIMES. So. If that’s not my gold stamp of approval on a fucking mpreg fic, idk what is. Life is full of surprises.
like the paradise found by occultings (Wangxian, E, 4k)
It isn’t often Lan Zhan finds herself at strip clubs.
If i’ve said it once, i’ve said it a million times: madame occultings can do no wrong in my eyes. A modern wlw!wangxian au where wwx is a stripper and lwj has a gift card. Let the congregation say amen.
a history of the body by northofallmusic (Wangxian, E, 14k)
Wei Ying's body hurts sometimes; she lets Lan Zhan help her.
A fic about the complicated nature of having a body, and also the versatility of sex toys.
A nice little wlw!wangxian modern au where they get together and have nice sex about it. Chicken soup for the soul.
A Sure Thing by mrsronweasley (Wangxian, E, 95k)
The message says, I require exclusive commitment as well as flexibility. You may spend the night, but not always. I will be the one to keep the schedule of our meetings.
Wei Ying crunches on a chip thoughtfully, then takes a deep breath and writes back, What do I get in return?
This was a trip and a half. A modern au (who am i) where lwj becomes wwx’s sugar daddy. Another instance of “if mrsronweasley (2022 note: who now goes by vesna??? how long have i been gone...) writes it, i will come.” Who am I to turn my nose up at 95k of excellent writing and delicious pining from the queen herself?
all I find is you by daltoneering (Wangxian, E, 10k)
There’s some cruel irony at work here, that the only inn for days would be off-limits to him. It has been months now that he’s been travelling, months since the last rays of sunlight brushed a Gusu mountaintop golden and he wrenched himself away and out into the world, months since he’s seen—well. What are months compared to years. What are years compared to a lifetime.
;
Wei Wuxian has been on the road for months, without a conscious end goal in sight. He isn’t expecting to find what he was looking for in a fully-booked-out inn in the back of beyond.
God is good but a 436th soft and tender post-canon get-together fic is better! This fic has it all: a chance meeting, a fully booked in, BED SHARING, lan wangji with braided hair, the works!
i'm the one for your fire by occultings (Wangxian, E, 43k) ***
Wei Ying, virgin and noted heterosexual, gets hit with a curse of an unusual nature on his 30th birthday — through physical contact, he can read the minds of others around him.
Enter Lan Zhan, hot former rival and current coworker, whose true thoughts about Wei Ying are nothing like he expects. (A loose Cherry Magic AU)
This is a modern au based off of a show that i think is japanese, but im not 100% sure, that’s about a curse where if youre a virgin when you turn 30 you can read people’s mind by touching them, which is an INFINITELY fun premise, so imagine my fucking delight when i realized this was written by MADAME OCCULTINGS!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN I GET A HELL YEAH!!! This fic is so fucking good, another one i've read multiple times already. I may have to formally rescind my statement that i don't read modern aus.
2022 update: this fic has become such a STAPLE to me that i was genuinely shocked to have found it on this unfinished fic rec. READ THIS SHIT!!!!!!! (Also I absolutely have to rescind my no-modern au stadnpoint. I do in fact love a good modern au now. People change!)
flux by SugarMilkTea (Wangxian, E, 60k)
When Wei Ying receives a strange figurine in a rural Gusu village, he thinks nothing of it. Ten months later, he finds himself walking a familiar path.
Ten months spent on the road. Ten months away from Lan Zhan. Ten months after they parted on that ridge in Gusu, Wei Ying comes home.
Another DOOZY of a post-canon-get-together-via-a-case fic. This time there are body swaps. There are ancient deities. There are strange old ladies. I read this feverishly in one sitting bc every single chapter i was like “wait WHAT.” Good good case fic antics.
2022 note: I went to link to the author’s ao3 and they have ORPHANED THIS FIC!!!!! the passage of time is cruel and ruthless.......
Pull out game weak by 74243 (Wangxian, E, 23k) ***
Wei Ying swipes right.
2022 note: i deleted my entire comment on this fic because it simply did not come close to expressing the cultural impact of ao3 user 74243. They showed up at the end of 2020. Wrote some of the filthiest lesbian wangcxian smut fics ive ever read. And then disappeared at the end of 2021. This fic in particular is my favorite of theirs, but honestly if you read it and are into it, i highly reccommend checking out all of their works. i..... [sweats]
Superfan by 74243 (Wangxian, E, 19k) ***
“I’m not going to apologize for my job,” Wei Ying said, “so if you want to give me some kind of lecture--”
“No,” Lan Zhan said. “You misunderstood. I am...” she paused, as if considering the best way to put it. “I’m a fan.”
Okay actually im also going to specifically throw this one on here bc its my other fave of theirs and ive read it...many times. This author kicked off what i can only refer to as a dyke lan zhan renaissance that has truly stood the test of time.
OKAY SO. There are the 26 fics that I had on my fic rec back in April 2021. INSANE. I was sitting on gold! Despite not keeping up with fic recs, i have actually read a fair amount of untamed fic over the time i’ve been gone, and especially in the last week, SO HERE THEY ARE! [OPRAH VOICE] YOU GET A FIC! YOU GET A FIC! YOU ALL GET FICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
miss me once the thrill expires by idrilka (Wangxian, E, 12k)
“Lan Zhan, explain one thing to me,” Wei Ying says as they make their way through the woods. “What is it about people saying, don’t go into the abandoned, potentially evil shrine, that makes teenagers immediately go into the abandoned, potentially evil shrine?”
Wei Ying and Lan Zhan team up to investigate a curse. It doesn't go quite according to plan.
i HAVE to start with the fic that kicked off my untamed fic rennaissance! my favorite untamed author, madame idrilka, recently started posting all of her fics on tumblr with fun graphics and to my utter surprise 1. i was already following her and 2. SHE POSTED A FIC I HAD NEVER READ BEFORE!!! if there’s any proof that god is good all the time, its idrilka posting a modern cultivation get-together-via-a-curse au. *chefs kiss until my fingers fall off* i owe you my life!
Better When We're Together by emmagrant01 (Jingyi/Sizhui, E, 64k) ***
In a universe where Wei Wuxian did not leave the Burial Mounds after settling there with the Wens and managed to live peacefully ever after, Jingyi grows up in the Cloud Recesses alone. Then one day, Hanguang-jun takes him to meet an old friend, and the course of Jingyi’s life changes.
OKAY SO. One of my favorite fics of all time is this 285k behemoth of an omgcp fic that genuinely is one of my most well-written and amazing pieces of fiction that ive ever read. so IMAGINE MY SURPRISE when i went to check in on miss emmagrant01 and found that she’s WRITING UNTAMED FIC NOW!!!! GOD. IS. GOOD. ALL. THE. TIME. this fic yall.........i truly cant sing it’s praises enough. there is so so so much good shit here. sizhui being raised more fully by wwx, jingyi being raised by wwx, childhood friends to lovers, wen qing is there. it has the works. PROMISE ME YOU WILL READ THIS FIC AHHHHHH
good friends by plonk (Wangxian/Nie Mingjue, E, 11k)
“I could invite her over for when the game’s done,” Nie Mingjue offers.
Lan Zhan hums, considering it.
They do that sometimes. Take omegas down together.
now listen.........like i said. ao3 user 74243 kicked off a dyke lan zhan era in untamed fic. and my most controversial love-to-hate author plonk wrote this fic FOR ao3 user 74243. is it a modern au? yes. is it also a fucking abo au? yes. have i read it many times bc im gay and it’s hot? WE DONT NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT!!!!!!! read it or dont, im not your mother! gosh!
Wrong to Say by easilyexcited (Wangxian, E, 5k)
When Wei Wuxian starts talking about how small his own dick is, Lan Wangji is...confused.
i actually found this fic for an anon of Jen’s recently and remembered that i liked it! not to pretend this is anything other than smut, but there are some fairly interesting character study bits for a 5k fic about wwx’s degradation kink
A storm without a warning by Spodumene (Wangxian, E, 22k) ***
Wei Ying loves his life. He wouldn't change a thing.
Change is like a storm. It comes anyway.
UGH man. this fic. talk about fics that made my hands sweat and my stomach flip from the sheer levels of YEARNING AND LONGING. realizing right here right now that this rec will have the most modern aus of any of them. oh how the turntables!
My stranger in the dark by becka (Wangxian, E, 20k)
Wei Ying, bartender at the Unclean Realm nightclub, likes making small talk with mysterious and beautiful Lan Zhan when she comes to the bar. It's a little bit of shock to find out that her favorite customer is a vampire involved in a fight for the safety of the club.
ANOTHER modern au, but this time they’re lesbians and lwj is a vampire. the spice of life!
bend me back, send me flying by  occultings (Wangxian, E, 9k)
It takes longer than it usually would for Wei Wuxian to catch on; the waiter’s mortified, flushed face, the couple with their hands under each other’s robes. The unusual warmth in his belly he has thus far, this evening, chalked up to his feelings for Lan Wangji.
“Oh!” Wei Wuxian says when the realization strikes him. It hits him so strangely that he hears himself laugh, even though the situation isn’t funny. Maybe it will be, someday. But tonight, he — oh.
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji get served the wrong pot of tea.
Newly married wangxian + aphrodisiac tea + madame occultings writing = *chefs kiss*
No Compasses, No Signs by brooklinegirl (Wangxian, E, 36k)
The old woman looks at Lan Zhan. "What's his name?"
Lan Zhan looks down at the man's pale, slack face, and presses his own hand against the cut, trying to staunch the blood flow with his glove. "Wei Ying," he says without thinking about it.
The man stirs slightly in his arms, his eyes blinking open for a moment. "Oh," he says faintly. "It's you."
Lan Zhan stares down at him, the stranger in his arms, whose name is Wei Ying. Which is something Lan Zhan knows. How does he know that? How does—he can't—this isn't—
"It's okay," Wei Ying says, reaching up to pat vaguely at Lan Zhan's face. "It's all—" His eyes slip closed again and he's limp in Lan Zhan's arms.
modern soulmate au that was VERY intersting and engaging! that’s love bitch!
sweet talker by vesna (Wangxian, E, 19k)
There's an unfamiliar middle blocker on the opposite team, one they've played a thousand times. "I've never seen her before." And Wei Ying is pretty sure she would have remembered her.
"That? I don't know her name, I think she's new to the team." Wen Qing assesses the woman. "I bet she's trouble. Look at how tall she is."
Well, yeah, she's a middle blocker. Wei Ying bets her height is what got her the position. She's tall and she's, like…super cool. Her dark hair is pulled up into a tiny pony at the crown, revealing an undercut underneath, and she's lean and muscular. She must notice Wei Ying's gaze on her because she shifts where she's looking and looks directly at Wei Ying. Wei Ying grins and waves, but the woman just skitters her gaze elsewhere, pursing her mouth. Hmph. Well. Rude.
When i said there was a modern au dyke lwj renaissance, i meant it! even vesna, aka fandom great mrsronweasley, jumped on the trend to AMAZING results. this made me sweat. when will dyke lwj dick ME down???
Let's Get Real, Baby by vesna (Wangxian, E, 22k)
If Wei Ying had been asked “what sort of pajamas does Lan Zhan wear to bed?” her answer might have been: something utilitarian, like shorts and a t-shirt. Or maybe a set of striped pajamas, like the kind grandpas wear. It would never, in a million years, have occurred to her to say “a slinky silky lacy cami and tiny shorts set,” but that is what she is currently staring—gaping—at as Lan Zhan makes her way from the bathroom to her side of the hotel room.
oh ho ho ANOTHER modern wlw wangxian au by the former mrsronweasley! not dyke lwj particularly, more girl boss powersuit lwj, but it still hits!
give me one good honest kiss by occultings (Wangxian, E, 16k)
The text keeps flashing over and over in Lan Zhan's head like the bulb lights on a marquee. They’d been talking about homework directly before that, swapping notes on music theory in the baroque period. Then, like a fork of lightning out of a clear blue sky: wanna practice kissing? 😚
Wei Ying suggests an arrangement. Lan Zhan, in love, deals.
i guess this is the modern wlw wangxian au rec????? the further back i get in my ao3 history the more i realize that the bulk of wangxian fic i’ve read in the last year and a half has been wlw shit. im not complaining!!!!! this one was great, STEEPED in gay pining! delicioso!
mercy, tear it down. by orange_crushed (Wangxian, E, 31k)
“You want me to call you good?” Wangji says. “To make you feel good?” Wei Ying makes a wretched, soft, surprised sound in the back of his throat. “Then will you be good?”
“Uh,” Wei Ying says. His lashes flick down again, nervously. “Good how?”
Wangji hasn’t quite thought that far ahead.
i really like this fic!!! wangxian fall into a bdsm relationship after wwx comes back Wrong from the burial mounds, then evolves into a pretty interesting canon divergence fic. ive reread this a couple times bc the tension is great and this author has such interesting ideas about canon divergent elements!
Love Don't Belong To Me by airinshaw (Wangxian, E, 29k) ***
Ten years ago Wei Ying was forced to disappear from his own life, changing his name and hiding from everyone he loved. Then on his birthday he runs into Nie Huaisang, who invites himself to Wei Ying's birthday party.
The clash of old and new lives freaks Wei Ying out, and he ends up drunkenly agreeing to call Lan Zhan to tell him that he was the love of his life.
But now that Lan Zhan has contact details for Wei Ying, he won't let it go.
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW. THIS FIC. like the summary says this is a modern no-magic au where wwx disappears for 10 years to start a new life and then drunkenly hits lwj up one night. i cant emphasize how much every part of this fic was a punch to the gut, had me gasping, crying, screaming, throwing up, etc etc! ive reread this so many times bc its just SO emotional!!!! AH!
estuaries by vesna (Wangxian, E, 34k)
Wei Ying's back is to him, but Lan Zhan would know him anywhere. His hair is tied into a low ponytail, messy, as always. It's longer now than it was three years ago, snaking down his back, ending just above his shoulder blades. With him is a child—a boy—who's holding onto his hand and looking up at him with his eyebrows furrowed, one finger stuck in his mouth.
Lan Zhan feels utterly foolish peeking from behind a display case at them, but he's rooted to the spot. He cannot move.
another modern no-magic au! this one is pretty angsty but it has a happy ending and i love a kid fic so this one got me good!
got your way with me by vesna (Wangxian, E, 51k)
It doesn't hit Wei Ying until the third time it happens. In his defense, he's not running on all cylinders, and definitely only on four hours of sleep. So if all he's noticed about the guy sharing the elevator with him for the third time in two weeks is his hotness, who can really blame him?
But now that he's looking a bit more closely, as the guy stares resolutely at the number display ticking up, he sees the telltale signs: slightly rumpled collar on an otherwise pristine outfit, bags under his eyes—not so noticeable that they are instantly apparent, but there if you look closely enough—kiss-bitten lips, and (the most damning evidence of all) a hickey blooming just under his ear.
This guy is coming back from a hookup of his own.
we’re in modern no-magic au mode okay, but this time its a fwb au! LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I Wish You Would by brooklinegirl (Wangxian, E, 52k)
Lan Zhan takes a breath. His hands are in fists on his thighs. He stares down at them hopelessly, then carefully unclenches them, one finger at a time, before taking another breath and reaching for his lukewarm tea. He'll go out, tomorrow. Maybe in the late afternoon. Something quick. Something easy. He'll text his brother first, the short note of when he should be home, so he'll know to track him. He'll be fine, just like he said.
i think this might be the last of the modern no-magic aus i have for this part! in this one wwx finds out that his long term boy best friend lwj FUCKS and it sends him into a late in life gay sprial. love it!
Not What We May Be by brooklinegirl (Wangxian, E, 30k) ***
It's Lan Zhan, standing tall, his hand gripping his sword. Has his hairpiece gotten even more elaborate? Or has Wei Wuxian just forgotten how stately it is? He's at the forefront of the group of Lan cultivators and if the pulsing darkness pushes Wei Wuxian's eyes away, then Lan Zhan draws them like there's nothing else worthy of looking at.
Wei Wuxian shakes his head at himself. He's been on the road too long. He's thinking in lines of poetry.
back to my origins, this is a really really really good case fic. another one where the case plot is intriguing and engaging and the wangxian plot is VERY sweet and romantic and satisfying. as far as case fics go this gets a 10/10 gold star!
Give Me a Chance to Fall by brooklinegirl (Wangxian, E, 38k)
Jiang Cheng just blows his breath out and rolls his eyes right back at Wei Wuxian. "Stop being an asshole," he says. "You're lucky this is being set up for you. Do you know how many people would die--literally die--to get the chance to be betrothed to Lan Wangji?"
"Betrothed." Wei Wuxian rolls the word around in his mouth. "It even sounds stupid."
Or, an arranged marriage canon-divergent fic where the war doesn't happen, the golden core loss doesn't happen, but Jiang Fengmian and Madame Yu still die, Jiang Cheng is the sect leader, and Lan Wangji is still called Hanguang-jun because, well, look at him.
okay i already KNEW brooklinegirl is a powerhouse in the fandom and has written many of my favorite untamed fics but i just realized the last two fics and a couple other in this rec were ALSO by her, CMON QUEEEEEEN! love that she can write diverse many different types of stories and they’re all so interesting and emotional and engaging. this is my little love letter to a03 author brooklinegirl. ANYWAYS this fic is a no-war wangxian betrothal au that made me blush multiple times because it was SO sweet and romantic and i had an absolute blast reading this. I’LL STOP DESCRIBING BROOKLINEGIRL FICS AS SWEET AND ROMANTIC WHEN THEY STOP BEING SO FUCKING SWEET AND ROMANTICCCCCCC!!!!!!!!!!!
a light hidden and singing by  occultings (Wangxian, E, 48k)
Since he was a child, since Lan Wangji had first become aware of his own alienating effect on others, he has long resigned himself to a loveless marriage. Perhaps even a companionate one, so long as his partner was agreeable and unbothersome and let him have his own space.
He could not have even begun to predict Wei Wuxian.
(A canonverse arranged marriage fic.)
OKAY! We’re ending it on ANOTHER betrothal au by the amazing madame occultings. this was really so good, the flirting, the uncertainty, the pining, all very well written, in-line with canon, and just all around enjoyable to read! saturated in longing without making me want to bash wangxian’s head together, which is a feat in itself! madame occultings can do no wrong!
THERE YOU HAVE IT. AFTER A YEAR AND A HALF. I PRESENT TO YOU: 1.3 million words across exactly 45 fics. Even though i dont have the time to hyperfixate on the untamed anymore, it has continued to be something i enjoy reading and revisiting when i can. even to this day, there is an embarassment of riches when it comes to the untamed fandom whether thats fic writers, fan artists, or gif editors. i am so thankful to the untamed for getting me through lockdown, keeping me busy while i was unemployed, teaching me so many new things, and letting me make so many new friends. i cant say for certain this will be my last fic rec ever, but it’ll definitely be my last for a while. thank you for reading! i love you!

Thinking about the power of miscommunication and its dramatic consequence in MDZS, not just romantic (wangxian), but also between Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan.
Let's talking about Jin Zixuan's tragic death: Zixuan arrives in the middle of the conflict, he tries to calm things down as the best he can by arguing with his cousin and put some sense in his head (impossible), and then zixun destroys wwx's gift for jin ling and wwx tries to attack zixun out of anger. And then we have Zixuan being confused by that act and trying to stop wwx, thinking he got crazy "out of nowhere", because he didn’t know what the box is and why wwx was so angry! Since Zixuan failed with his imbecile cousin, he tries to calm wwx down.
And the miscommunication continues. Wwx thought Zixuan is involved too in that ambush and he's trying to play tricks with him by asking to go to Jin Lintai. Actually Zixuan was just trying to settle the situation down and taking wwx to his wife, Jiang Yanli, wwx's sister. Again wwx thinks it's a trap but while Zixuan is not the most intelligent person, he offers this plan out of good faith. When wwx will explain with calm how he's not involved in zixun's curse, everything will be fine. Little he knows how his family is fucked up and wanted to murder wwx since the beginning. They just wanted an excuse.
Wwx knows the truth too, he knows if he goes to Jin Lintai under these circumstances, we'll be super dead. But what he misjudged is zixuan not wanting him dead! At the same time Zixuan misjudged the situation and thinking that if wwx will stop wen ning by being a super weapon, then the archers will stop too and the attacks from both fronts will cease. He wasn't there at the beginning and he didn’t know the archers attacked wwx out of nowhere and with no provocation by wwx. Actually he saw himself wwx attacking zixun first "out of nowhere". Both these characters have prejudices against each other (zixuan thinking wwx is crazy and too stubborn to search a non mortal solution; wwx thinking he can't trust zixuan) for their past hate, and both failed to see each other's true intentions.
Mix of consequences and factors caused zixuan's death (no mistake, wwx is definitely the responsible in the novel), but damn the miscommunication (worsened by wwx's bad mental state), played hard on that conflict.
It was a predictable and tragic incident, though wwx didn’t trust zixuan or never liked him (and vice versa) he never intended to harm him!
But of course no one understood that, because wwx threatened to kill zixuan in the past, so of course he really wanted to kill him this time. But he didn’t. Again misunderstandings (on purpose or not). The only one wwx hasn't miscommunication with is Yanli. Yeah she was in deep mourning for her husband's death, but she didn’t blame wwx, never did (these would have been her final words, if only...), because she knows wwx never intended to do an intentional harm to zixuan! Tragically wwx died thinking yanli would have blamed him too. Not saying that he didn’t think of himself being guilty over that killing, he does, he knows he's the responsable one, because wen ning was HIS weapon, and never excused it. (Wwx always attacked people who attacked him first. Fair enough. Zixuan's death was the only unfair one, because none of them intended harm.)
End of my point. Now going back to fanfics where everybody lives

I'm rereading this one I have bookmarked bc I like the premise but so many lines have me going ??????
Having the love of the famous Hanguang-jun is something usually only granted to him in his wildest fantasies, and the presence of his husband usually soothes the worst of his anxiety.
'usually something only granted in his wildest fantasies' bro you are married to him??? and have been for a while??? it's literally your everyday life now??
Handcrafted, hand painted jade, carved into the shape of a lotus flower.
authors LOVE saying 'handcrafted' as if anything from canon was made any other way. I mean, I guess cultivation magic exists but it's not like artisans are using cultivation to paint their wares
Wei Wuxian himself had been on the path to an immortal golden core himself, before he looked death in the eye and realized that he was nothing without his family.
this is a snappy line but it's not entirely correct about why wwx did what he did. sure, that may be a part of it, but it was a complicated situation involving a lot of factors besides this
Jin Ling comes to visit sometimes, and he coaxes Lan Jingyi out of his shell, the two bickering like they had before
jingyi??? out of his shell??? JINGYI????? LAN jingyi????
But he’s never been able to lie to Lan Zhan.
I actually like this one in the sense that 'even if he tried, his emotional truth still came out eventually' but he lied to lwj during ss campaign pretty successfully so technically incorrect
"It feels like… like three weeks ago, I woke up to Wen Qing and Wen Ning gone. Three weeks since shijie took that blade for me..."
im sorry but three weeks is not enough time to solve the mystery of the sword that wwx came back to life to confront and it's certainly not enough time to get from the last day of his life to past the temple scene and to marriage/living in CR. they literally did nothing for a fucking month postres. three WEEKS? are you kidding me?

Prompt Modern Au
A video goes viral of Jiang Wanyin slapping Jin Ling across the face and being thrown on the floor making his head hit a rock. Because of public outcry Jiang Wanyin loses custody of Jin Ling especially after many videos surface of him being abusive towards his employees and also because of Meng Yao’s crimes recently have come to light. Since Wei Wuxian was technically adopted by the Jiang family they call him to let him know what’s going on and because all the Jin family are entangled with Meng Yao’s crimes too. Wei Wuxian after going no contact with Jiang Yanli and Jiang Wanyin because of an interview they did condemning him for helping out the Wens (even though we all know about the Jiangs debt to Wen Qing and Wen Ning) and kicking him out of the family was contacted because he’s basically Jin Ling’s last direct family.(Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan were both killed by Meng Yao in a car accident and basically nannies raised Jin Ling ) Wei Wuxian and his husband Lan Wangji (who is barely talking to Lan Xichen because he got drunk and started screaming at Wei Wuxian that everything was his fault) agreed and to take him in.
* Jin Ling is like 12 or 13
* Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji have been married for 13 years
* Wei Wuxian works as a big data engineer and Lan Wangji as a music producer and teacher
* Lan Yuan is 16
* Lan Xichen never liked that Lan Wangji left Cloud Recesses academy and having Meng Yao poisoning his ear for years grew resentful of Wei Wuxian especially after they arrested Meng Yao
* Way more videos of Jiang Wanyin come out over the years of him abusing people, his business started declining because of his connection to Meng Yao and now he basically got canceled
* Jin Ling still finds friends with all the juniors and is going to therapy
* The Jin family tried to frame Wei Wuxian in crimes but their was never enough evidence so he and Lan Wangji elope and go live with the Wens
* Wei Wuxian never contacts the Jiangs after the interview
* Nie Huaisang stages Meng Yao’s “suicide” in prison and is basically responsible for all the evidence and videos that come to light after finding out who killed his brother
*????

For prompts, I'd really like to see your take on Wei Wuxian being summoned back by Qin Su instead of Mo Xuanyu. It's an idea I've only seen done once very briefly, and I've wanted to see more of it since.
Untamed verse
Being summoned back to replace a woman was, while odd, not the biggest problem in Wei Wuxian’s life.
The women’s clothing he could deal with, thanks to some very specific dares in his youth due to hanging out with Nie Huaisang, that deviant; the make-up was something he had helped Jiang Yanli out with before; and the hair...
Whatever. His maids would live with his hair done up a little more casually than they might have expected.
No, the biggest problem was that he was masquerading as the wife of Lianfeng-zun, Chief Cultivator. And that actually wouldn’t be so much of a problem, except that said Chief Cultivator was apparently an absolute psychopath with a collection of grisly trophies that said wife had apparently found right before deciding to end her life in favor of revenge.
Revenge which Wei Wuxian was massively underqualified to undertake.
Demonic cultivation or not, he’d probably need an army to undertake it, she wanted him to kill the Chief Cultivator, but if he didn’t do it, his soul would be forfeit.
Great.
“I need help,” he decided.
Qin Su, as his summoner was apparently called, was very fond of veils, which Wei Wuxian now greatly appreciated as a fine trait in a woman, and had a low voice, which he also appreciated; no one questioned it when he asked for ink and paper for correspondence. Something he was allowed, apparently, unlike the ability to leave – that had been the first thing he’d tried, of course.
Unfortunately, Qin Su had apparently lost a son (her husband had killed her son, to be clear, there’d been evidence aplenty in the treasure room Wei Wuxian had woken up in, and honestly the “summon an evil spirit for vengeance” thing would be totally understandable if she hadn’t chosen to summon him) and she’d taken it sufficient badly in public, or was said to have, that her husband had decided to restrict her to the inside of Koi Tower out of fear for her safety, and to enforce the restriction with guards.
Fucking psychopath.
Wei Wuxian sat in front of the paper and stared at it.
The simple fact of the matter was, he had been dead for sixteen years.
Wen Ning, who’d been his right hand, had died before he had, and resentful energy, while still available (and how, that treasure room was reeking with it), was no substitute for a person. The cultivation world had turned against him, leaving him without friends or allies to call on...was there someone who he might try to write to? Someone who would  still answer his request if absolutely need be? And if so, who was it?
The Jin sect belonged to Lianfeng-zun, who he was trying to escape, and he had no idea if Jin Ling had survived the man’s apparently bloody reign since there was neither hide nor hair of a fifteen year old anywhere he could see. The Nie sect had once been reliable, always determined to destroy evil and enact justice, but Nie Mingjue was dead (a fact Wei Wuxian became aware of once he found that his head was in the treasure room sans body) and who knew the state of the sect now - especially since if he remembered correctly, Nie Huaisang had been fairly close to Meng Yao before he became Jin Guangyao, and might be close to him still. No, asking him was too much of a risk.
The Lan sect…
Lan Wangji would believe him, he thought. Lan Wangji had believed in him back then, and tried to help him, even at the end of it all. But it was Lan Xichen who was the sect leader, not Lan Wangji, and Lianfeng-zun was Lan Xichen’s sworn brother. Who could tell which of the two Jades of Lan would receive his letter?
No.
There was only one option.
Wei Wuxian took a deep breath beneath his veil, closed his eyes for a moment to gather strength, and wrote –
Jiang Cheng, I need your help.
-
“Why are we rushing?” Jin Ling complained, though he looked more bemused than anything else. “Jiujiu, you don’t even like to go to Koi Tower, you never go to Koi Tower –”
“I go twice a year and you know it,” Jiang Cheng snapped, his fingers still tightly clutching the letter that had been delivered by urgent post.
“Yes, twice a year, the absolute bare minimum you have to visit,” Jin Ling said. He wasn’t wrong, either. “Who’s the letter from?”
“I already told you, it’s from Madame Jin.”
“I didn’t realize you were serious,” Jin Ling said. “I’ve never known you to be close to her. Just – tell me this isn’t like the Mo Xuanyu thing, okay? She’s pretty, sure, but she’s not that pretty…”
“Mo Xuanyu?” Jiang Cheng asked, only half paying attention. They were almost there. Soon, he’d know the truth, he’d know if – but how could it be anything but the truth? Who else would know to use those old codes, the ones they came up with as children, giggling together in their rooms at the Lotus Pier? No one yet living could know them, only him –
Soon.
“You know, my uncle, the weird one – turns out he was a pervert that became fixated on Madame Jin –”
“What does that have to do with me...” Jiang Cheng trailed off and turned to glare. “Don’t be absurd!”
Jin Ling didn’t have the courtesy to look abashed. “I was just checking –”
They walked in through the doors of the Fragrant Palace. Qin Su was seated in her normal place, delicate as a flower in a dress of pale rose and a dusty veil hung over her face with a diadem, matching earrings, everything a proper noble lady should be, and at first Jiang Cheng thought that he must have been mistaken, hallucinating, something –
And then she turns to look at him and above the veil he saw those eyes and he knew.
-
“I’ll write to Lan Wangji once we’re back at the Lotus Pier,” Jiang Cheng said.
“Good idea,” the carpet they were currently smuggling out of Lanling said. “Lan Zhan will definitely help! I just couldn’t guarantee he’d come for Qin Su, you understand…”
“It’s a good thing you didn’t,” Jin Ling said, kicking his heels. He’d had rather a nasty shock, finding out firstly that Wei Wuxian had been summoned back, secondly that it was his aunt that had done the summoning, thirdly that she’d done it to stop his little uncle, who was apparently evil, and lastly that his beloved jiujiu was responding to Wei Wuxian’s return by helping him rather than killing him – but he was young and recovered easily from shock, and by now he was more caught up in the drama and adventure of it all. “Hanguang-jun never comes to Lanling. Not once.”
“That’s true,” Jiang Cheng said. “Not even for discussion conferences. It would have been noticed.”
“Why? Does he know about Lianfeng-zun –”
“No, he would have said something, he’s stupidly righteous like that,” Jiang Cheng said. “It was because of you, you idiot.”
“…oh.”
“Why does no one ever tell me these things?” Jin Ling complained.
-
“Why did you come help me, Jiang Cheng?” Wei Wuxian asked much later. “You didn’t ask any questions, you didn’t doubt, you just – you hate me. For what I did at the Nightless City, to shijie, for abandoning you…I know you hate me. Why did you come?”
“You asked.”

Random Untamed Alchemist Thoughts: Other Characters Edition
Masterpost
~
Colonel Mustang = Nie Mingjue
Lieutenant Hawkeye = Wen Qing
Wen Qing always wanted to be a doctor, and had almost completed her qualifications, when her family pushed her into joining the military. After all, she is distantly related to President Wen Ruohan and his sons, let’s keep the family involved!
She still studies medicine on the side, and volunteers when she can.
Nie Mingjue was always going to be a military man, following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and so on. He did not, however, expect to be held back from rising up the ranks by his kid brother, who he unexpectedly took on when their parents died. A soldier who can’t instantly drop everything and come running when needed can only get so far, after all.
Wen Qing, on the other hand, savors the fact that having a little brother keeps her mostly tied to Central. She has no ambitions to reach the top, she is merely fulfilling the role handed to her, and has every plan to retire asap once she has the funds, a place for them to stay far from the city, and a well-paying job.
If only she had more time to properly study in the evening after her brother goes to bed, she could finally qualify...
Wen Qing and Nie Mingjue aren’t together but holy shit would they make one hell of a power couple if they were
Wen Ning and Nie Huaisang are both kids, maybe around 9 or 10-ish, and when they’re not at school often spend their time together. At first it started as handy play dates, as their older siblings often started/ended work at the same time and the kids could keep each other entertained while they waited to be picked up.
However they quickly became actual friends, Nie Huaisang enjoying spending time with someone who also liked art and drawing and would listen to him chatter, and Wen Ning liking how he wasn’t expected to roughhouse or act tough and could happily sit quietly and nod along to all the things Nie Huaisang told him. His friend is so knowledgeable! He has tons to say about poetry and paintings and birds!
It’s very cute.
Often Granny Wen babysits them, and they sometimes stay the night in her old spare room where they have to share a bed. Other times they are looked after by Uncle Four, who lets them camp on the couch and won’t tell if they stay up after their bedtime.
They secretly like Uncle Four the best.

Meng Yao is Envy - constantly changing face, a chameleon when he needs to be, playing on people’s emotions.
Unlike the Envy of FMA (and I won’t lie I can’t remember 99% of what the homunculus do in fma), he’s slow and calculating, a person who knows exactly what he wants and works non-stop until he gets it.
He...just didn’t expect, when he slunk into the ranks of Mingjue’s command with the face of Jin Guangyao, a barely noticeable solider and a forgotten member of the Jin family, a man who Meng Yao killed alone in his flat the night before, to start...caring? about people? and oh, he’s still working towards his goals, there’s no doubt about that, but...the truth will hurt, when it’s revealed.
Especially to Lan Xichen, who he met when Wei Wuxian broke his automail and Lan Wangji had the flu so couldn’t come to Central to fix it. They had lunch together. He’d taken Lan Xichen so see some of the sights. They have common interests, in music, in literature, architecture, the calm social life of quiet cafes and bars. For the first time since his creation, Meng Yao feels alive, human, as if living is worth more than he ever knew.
And there’s this little boy, Jin Ling. A whirlwind of a thing, with a bubbling temper and a hero worship love for his two alchemist uncles.
He doesn’t pay attention to Meng Yao at first, none of the Jin do, apparently Jin Guangyao didn’t inspire much from people (later, he finds out why, that his role is that of a half-brother, unexpected and taken on out of duty rather than love), but as the months draw by, this dot of a child slowly starts appearing at his side, asking questions, at first about his uncles, but then about him, about the world, about life, and Meng Yao wants, so badly that it hurts.
He wants this life, he wants to tuck Jin Ling into bed and read him stories, and to watch Madam Jin roll her eyes at Wei Wuxian’s latest shenanigan. He wants to sit down to family dinners, cooked and warm and full of flavour. He wants to listen to the stories of Jin Zixuan, the older brother he never knew, who would hold Jin Guangyao’s hand when they were little and sneak him sweets behind their father’s back.
Meng Yao wants, and Meng Yao envies.
~
And speaking of the homunculus:
Xue Yang is Greed.
He wants things, and he makes them his. He collects objects, items, people, anything that takes his fancy, never sharing, never opening up, just hoarding away with feverish passion.
Then he meets a family.
Xiao Xingchen, Song Lan, and their adopted daughter, A-Qing.
And Xue Yang is greedy. He wants.
He gets injured, and by coincidence is taken in by the family, who help him, heal him, and offer him a place to stay. He tells himself that he’s infiltrating, that he’s biding his time until it’s just right, and then he’ll take, because that’s what he does. He’ll snatch away the daughter and the husbands and add them to his collection of things because that is the only life he knows.
They’re so pretty. So kind. So open and naive and stupid. Perhaps he’ll kill them and preserve them like dolls. Perhaps he’ll keep them alive and adorned with the other things he’s stolen. Perhaps he’ll play house, because he’s become used to the daily routines, to walking with Xiao Xingchen to pick up A-Qing from school, to family breakfast, to helping Song Lan fix the roof and chop firewood and fail to cook in the kitchen.
And then the family is hurt.
One of those state alchemists comes to town, the wild one with the black coat and a brother towering in metal, and makes something explode in the library, a chemical or something, Xue Yang doesn’t care, but Xiao Xingchen and A-Qing were in the library, right there among the children’s books, right in the way-
He and Song Lan get the call from the hospital when they were fixing lunch, just when everything felt so perfect-
They both come away from the incident blind.
And Xue Yang...
Well, Xue Yang is greedy. No one else is allowed to touch his things.
That state alchemist is going to pay.

They made this LXC so much more complicit and delusional and hopelessly besotted with jgy that he seemed like he never gave a shit about the nies even after knowing what happened like he even heard the conversation before nmj’s death, this lxc knew and this lxc placed jgy above nmj and nhs’s feeling which has me feeling proud of nhs for making him suffer lmao he gave him all the chances he could possibly give him but lxc went fuck it I’ll help my a-yao
They definitely pushed the LXC/JGY ship, but I mean I'm not surprised considering they did the same in cql. Personally I'm happy with NHS regardless, even in mdzs, and think it was a neat conclusion to have LXC put an end to JGY- since he's part of the reason JGY was able to rise socially in the way that he did and attain the power he had. I like LXC a lot. I don't blame him that much for having his qualities used against him by JGY but I would blame him now knowing everything for not putting an end to JGY. Besides if LXC would have let JGY live- which all signs pointed to! MXY'S CURSE WOULD HAVE CONSUMED WWX!!!
Ok I rewatched the episode and I'm even more mad now lol. Even Chenqing's return is messed up... The point isn't that WWX using his new flute wasn't enough. He was stuck fluteless whistling bc his makeshift flute was broken intercepting the arrow that would have hit Jin Ling?! No WWX Jin Lin hug... but they had time for JGY greatest hits to flashback for LXC. Then you have jc staring on and listening in like a creep and watching FROM THE BUSHES. Hi 911?
Even The Juniors giving Candied Haws to Wen Ning even tho he's a fierce corpse who CAN'T EAT?!!! This is what I mean about the donghua, no substance. It's just visuals.

How does Lan Yun feel about her mom being the yiling matriarch?? especially since wwx abandoned lotus pier and her family to save the wens? she must have some kind of conflicted feelings considering her stance on staying in lotus pier
midnight sun [snippet 3]
The thing is, Jiang Cheng never really bad mouthed Yiling Laozu. Jin Ling knew through stories that Yiling Laozu was the one who killed his father, but even then, he didn’t try very hard to take revenge. He stabbed Wei Wuxian a grand total of 1 time and then gave up.
Jiang Cheng’s policy about Yiling Laozu is to just...never talk about it. Demonic Cultivation is strictly prohibited, but Yiling Laozu herself is an off limits topic of conversation.
~~~
Jiang Yan at 4-years-old asked Jiang Cheng one night, “Shifu, why do all the other children have a-die and a-niang? What happened to my a-die and a-niang?”
Jiang Cheng, tucking her in, does not know how to comfort little children, “Some children’s parents die before others.”
 Jiang Yan, “Is Yan’er's a-niang dead?”
Jiang Cheng, “...Yes.”
Jiang Yan, “Oh..." sad, eyes going a little watery, and asks again, "and a-die?”
Jiang Cheng, “...your a-niang never spoke about your a-die to me.” (This was not a complete lie. Never once did Wei Wuxian ever mention that Lan Wangji was Jiang Yan's father, but it hardly needed mentioning. Jiang Cheng could read between the lines).
Jiang Yan, “Oh...” Really sad this time, close to crying.
Jiang Cheng, with great difficulty and pain, said, “Your a-niang entrusted you to me before her death. It's true she’s gone now, but you have shifu, and shifu will always protect you, just as I promised your mother. Now sleep, Yan’er, tomorrow, there’s much to do.”
Jiang Yan forgave Wei Wuxian almost instantly once the truth came out. It’s hard to stay mad at the woman who did everything under the sun to ensure you got to live.
Wen Ning told Jiang Yan, "That day, I was so scared. I helped my sister, Wen Qing, with lots of deliveries before, but... your mother, Wei-guniang, I’ve never seen a lady take a knife to herself the way she did. Even my sister was rattled, and she was the best doctor of Qishan Wen.”
And later:
Yan’er to Wei Wuxian, probably crying, “A-niang, Yan’er is all grown up. Look, a-niang look — see, look at me. Do I look like you, a-niang? Have I grown to be as beautiful as a-niang?”
~~
If anything I think Jiang Yan would be MOST mad at Lan Wangji.
It’s gonna take some time for Jiang Yan to accept that she’s Lan Yan. As far as she’s concerned, Lan Wangji committed the most unacceptable faux pas a gentleman can make with regards to relationships and love: he abandoned a lady with whom he shared relations, left her with child which inadvertently almost led to her death.
On a bigger scale, she thinks he’s a coward for not standing with Wei Wuxian at Nevernight.
In reality, Jiang Yan and Lan Wangji are very similar people, which is probably why she finds his mistakes so difficult to forgive.
Jiang Yan straight up refuse to call him any variation of “father” for years, only “Hanguang-jun.”
LWJ sighs, “I tried but, Yan’er is...difficult.”
WWX glares up at him, “My daughter is not difficult.”
LWJ corrects, “Our daughter. She takes after her mother.”
WWX huffs, “I beg to differ. Lan Zhan, you seemed to have forgotten what you were like at 15.”
LWJ, very sad, “Wei Ying, I...I don’t know how -” Sighs again. “Yan’er hates me.”
WWX shakes her head. “She doesn’t hate you. She’s just...it’s been a lot, and she was raised by Jiang Cheng, no less. She’ll come around. Be patient, Lan-er-gege.”
Qin Su!WWX AU, Jiang Cheng’s reactions to both Jin Zixuan and Wei Ying being alive. And the revelation of the golden core transfer.
How many kids to wangxian end up having? Like do they end up beating nielan?
the revelation happens very close to canon, so take some reaction to wwx being alive!! ^_^
___
“What’s wrong with him?” he hears Jiang Cheng say, hovering awkwardly at Jin Ling’s side with Lan Jingyi and Ouyang Zizhen crowding up behind him. “Wei Wuxian?”
“He just fought off all those fierce corpses, Jiang-zongzhu!” Jin Zixuan snaps, aggrieved. Or at least that’s what Wei Wuxian thinks he must have said: the smell of spilt blood never made him sick before he came back as a woman, or even when he and Lan Zhan were digging through that mass grave in Moling ten weeks ago, but something seems to have changed since then. “Do you want some water, Wei Wuxian?”
“Is it safe to drink out of the blood pool?” Jingyi pipes up, reminding Wei Wuxian a great deal of his xiao-shushu. “Sang-shushu, you carry water bottles, right?”
Nie Huaisang pulls a waterskin out of his space pouch and crouches down beside him. “Here, Wei-xiong,” he says anxiously, grabbing Wei Wuxian’s clammy hands and wrapping his fingers around the skin. “It’s probably warm by now, but it’s better than nothing.”
Wei Wuxian shakes his head and slumps down against Lan Zhan. “No,” he croaks. “I’ll choke on it. My head’s swimming.”
Someone shouts outside the Demon-Slaughtering Cave, and a shadow disappears from Wei Wuxian’s field of view as Nie Mingjue strides away into the ruined courtyard to see what the matter is. The breeze from his rustling skirts strikes Wei Wuxian full in the face, bringing back the stench of the corpse blood spattered all over his clothes, and Wei Wuxian makes a miserable groaning sound before squeezing his eyes shut.
Living in this body has taken a turn for the worse, he decides. Qin Su was in perfect health before she summoned him, and Wei Wuxian believed that all the exercise from his months on the road would make her body even healthier, but the events of today have certainly proved him wrong.
“Here, Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan murmurs. “Use this.”
He reaches into his bag and pulls out a clean handkerchief, perfumed with sandalwood incense from the jingshi and just a touch of lavender from the laundry soap Lan Xichen favors. Wei Wuxian presses the soft silk over his nose and breathes into it, feeling his heart slow down a little as Lan Zhan wraps his arms around him and starts passing him spiritual energy.
“So you’re alive again,” Jiang Cheng mutters. “And you stole Jin-furen’s body to do it.”
“I didn’t steal anything,” Wei Wuxian shoots back, surprising even himself with the heat of his irritation. “She summoned me, so even if you hit me with Zidian like you did to Mo Xuanyu, it’s not going to--”
“I thought he was you!” his brother growls. “He made a dizi and summoned Wen Ning! What else was I supposed to think?”
Wei Wuxian pushes the handkerchief aside to yell at Jiang Cheng--because Wen Ning is still somewhere within earshot, albeit far enough away that A-Ling can’t see him through the crowd of juniors filling the cave--but then the blood-stench hits him twice as hard as before, and Wei Wuxian lurches forward and throws up all over Jiang Cheng’s shoes.
“Wei Wuxian!”
“Wei Ying!” he hears Lan Zhan cry, before someone snatches up the perfumed kerchief, soaks it in clean water, and lays it over his forehead. “You--”
“Oh, I can’t believe this. Have you any shame left at all, to act in such a way right in front of A-Ling--”
“Wangji!” someone else bellows, stopping Jiang Cheng dead in his tracks. “We have bigger problems than whatever’s going on here. I’ve just had word from the Cloud Recesses.”
Lan Zhan goes tense beside him. “What is wrong?”
“A-Qing and Jueying are missing,” Chifeng-zun says desperately. “Your uncle sent Xichen a messenger talisman, and it came back unopened. But A-Qing and A-Ying were in the Meishi with him then, and they were gone by the time he returned from his lecture!”
“He wouldn’t hurt a child,” Nie Huaisang says desperately. “If the girls went to Lanling to find Xichen-ge, he--Da-ge, San-ge wouldn’t, he wouldn’t hurt a child--”
His voice dies away before he can finish his sentence, and he and Lan Zhan exchange a pair of frantic glances: because the only reason any of them are here is because Jin Guangyao had killed a child, before slaughtering the entire Tingshan He clan to ensure that He Su would take the blame for it.
And if Lan Xichen and his children are in Jin Guangyao’s clutches, then...
Wei Wuxian feels his heart sink.
Oh, no, he thinks numbly.
What have I done?
MDZS fic I'll probably never write (but I want to so...maybe)
So Jiang Cheng actually finds a woman willing to marry him but she's afraid of dogs too.
Since Lotus Pier has no dogs (hmm I wonder why...), the first time he finds out this tidbit is when Jin Ling is gifted Fairy and proudly comes to visit, wanting to show her off to his aunt and uncle. Except said aunt is terrified and clings to her husband who is suddenly getting ~war~ flashbacks. And by that I mean rapid memories of Wei Wuxian clinging and screaming whenever he encountered a dog.
Despite the fact that he loves this woman and they've been married for years and she has in fact handled zidian before (aka u know, she can't be possessed or zidian would do the zap)... for one hot second his brain goes 'wife + fear of dogs = wei wuxian possession/reincarnation/shapeshifting???'
He just barely tells Jin Ling to take Fairy for a walk and turns on his wife all accusingly. She's already clinging to him so he just grabs her arms and she has no idea why he's reacting like this and is all concerned like "A-Cheng what's wrong, you're gripping me rather tight. Are you afraid of dogs too?"
And he's just like "Wei Wuxian!"
"You're afraid of Wei Wuxian?" says poor confused wife.
"No! You! You are..."
"I'm afraid of Wei Wuxian???"
Girl is now wondering if Wei Wuxian turned/reincarnated into a dog and is now A-Ling's pet.
But her silly husband is staring at her with a slightly unhinged look and is all like 'Wei Wuxian where is my wife? What did you do to my wife?'
And she's really confused now and is like... 'But.. I am your wife. I'm right here? A-Cheng are you okay?"
And he's losing it like what? Wei Wuxian was his wife all along??
She realises from his mad ramblings that he thinks she's Wei Wuxian and can't help but laugh.
She's all like, "But A-Cheng... I share your bed, how could I be Wei Wuxian?"
"A-Cheng...did... were you and Wei Wuxian... like that?"
And my boy spits blood. He just implodes at the thought of Wei Wuxian and him like that. And his wife is concerned but also finding this like absolutely hilarious.
This of course makes him realise that no it's not Wei Wuxian, he wouldn't come near Jiang Cheng with a ten foot pole, so his wife is just terrified of dogs all on her own.
Years later he goes on a hunt to Dafan mountain with A-Ling and they meet the mad demonic cultivator who Jiang Cheng knows is really Wei Wuxian this time à la his Wen Ning summoning.
Wei Wuxian hides behind Lan Wangji and is all like 'You're not my type Sect Leader Jiang' thinking that he'll make JC forget about the Wen Ning thing by offending him as Jiang Cheng is competitive and doesn't like being called second best.
Except he has the surprise of his life when Jiang Cheng just heaves a huuuge sigh of relief and vehemently says 'THANK F**K.'
Somehow, this turns into a fix-it.
His wife of course has never let him live down the time he thought she was the Yiling Laozu.
---------------------------------
This just randomly popped into my head and it's now living here rent free but I have no zeal to actually write it because it's easier to imagine it and dang I wish I was motivated lol I have 2 WIPs for this fandom just sitting there staring at me accusingly.
Proposals!
Wei Wuxian
Wei Wuxian’s been wanting to propose for a while, actually. You two have been together for about four years now- almost five- and he can’t help it.
He actually didn’t know how to propose or when. Of course, those are always the main concerns when it comes to proposing. Both Wen Ning and Wen Qing actually helped him out, as well as little Yuan. The plan was that you two would go on a fun date all day and then he’d propose at night under the full moon.
It actually goes very well. Although, earlier that day, he forgot where he placed the ring so he thought he lost it. He almost cried but Wen Qing actually found it and kept it safe to give it to him later. He was extremely thankful for it. He couldn’t imagine losing such a precious item.
You’re extremely happy! You couldn’t breathe when you heard his words, the words that asked you to be his forever. You jumped into his arms without even really waiting for him to finish his little speech.
“Ah… I.. guess I didn’t have to stress so much. N-no I’m not crying, I’m… yeah, I’m crying. I just love you so much.”
Jiang Cheng:
You’ve been with him for a little over six years, your relationship is extremely stable and it was time for you two to get married, honestly. Jiang Cheng had been thinking about it for almost two years now and finally decided to propose.
He wasn’t sure when the right time would be. Fortunately, New Years was right around the corner, so that’s when he settled on the date! He had everything ready and since he’d been planning everything for two years now, he knew exactly what he wanted to do.
Everything goes according to plan, actually. He was really scared he’d mess it up. He was so nervous that you started to suspect him. Of course, you didn’t think he was going to propose, you thought he might’ve received a threat or something, given that he's the clan leader now.
You were both relieved and excited to receive the proposal. You were happy to know that it was nothing serious, but you were also elated to find out it was a proposal! An actual marriage proposal! You were so happy you started crying and tackled him to the floor. No, you didn’t move for like five minutes.
“Hey! Come on get off! We’re on the floor-... I love you so much. So don’t ever leave me, ok?”
Lan Sizhui:
You had been together for exactly five years and Sizhui had wanted to propose for the longest time. He’d actually fallen so much in love, he had started thinking about your wedding about a year into your relationship, but knew it was too early so waited it out. He planned to propose on your birthday!
He couldn’t think of anything. Every time he thought about proposing, he’d think about you two married and his mind would just blank. Both Lan Jingyi and Jin Ling helped set it up. All three spent almost a whole month planning it before Sizhui was finally able to go through with it.
It started well. Then went horrendously wrong. First thing, he lost the ring. Second, the party they’d set up for your birthday was almost ruined because you got called away by a friend for a small emergency. Jin Ling thought Fairy ate the cake and Lan Jingyi couldn’t find the presents. THANKFULLY, Lan Wangji was there to save the day. He knew where the cake was, he found the ring and presents, and employed Wei Wuxian to help solve your friend’s problem so you could both make it in time.
Although everyone wanted to see the proposal, Sizhui preferred to do it in private. So, he took you to a room where he started his little speech. You could barely let him finish before you tackled him to the floor. He was so happy he cried BUT WORRY NOT. Everyone was secretly watching so they saw it all happen. They won’t tell you two though. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian engraved the scene in their hearts as proud fathers!
“Y-you mean it? Really?! You’re… that means you’re all mine now, right? Good… because I can’t think of anyone else I’d want to spend the rest of my life with.
Lan Jingyi:
You two have been together for nearly six years now and it’s been something he’s wanted to do for almost three of them. He never thought he would see the day where he would be SO excited to propose, but here it is. He decided to do it on Christmas since it’s your favorite holiday!
He employed both Sizhui and Jin Ling to help, mainly for planning. All three of them were able to come up with a foolproof plan that would work no matter what! As long as you said yes… that is. So, ok, not completely foolproof.
It started terribly. There was a Christmas party and it was chaotic as hell there. Jingyi’s present was actually the thing… which he lost in the pile of presents that everyone had brought. He almost cried but don’t worry! Sizhui and Jin Ling were the best helpers, they didn’t stop until they found that little present box. They even managed to get you two some alone time where he sat you down and let you open the box.
You were elated. Tears slid down your cheeks as you shakily grabbed the ring in the box. You kept looking at Jingyi waiting for him to say it was a joke, but he never did. He took the ring and slid it onto your finger without saying anything. All you did was nod and hug him, sitting in his lap and crying for the next thirty minutes.
“Hush now, don’t cry too much. You’ll spend all your tears. Hey… you’re all mine now, ok? And I promise to keep you safe and happy for the rest of our lives. Now, smile for me.”
Jin Ling:
You had been together for almost four years now. Jin Ling didn’t think he’d seen the day so soon. Of course, he’d always been so madly in love with you, he knew it would happen SOME DAY. He just… never expected it to be here… right now.
Golly, he is TERRIFIED. He was so scared. Both Jingyi and Sizhui assured him everything would be ok and helped him plan it. Even though he claimed he didn’t need their help the entire time. He did though. He really did. The plan was for him to take you on a date and propose there, at the little special spot you two had.
Did it go well? Not really. No, not at all. Actually, he ended up being called away. Jiang Cheng needed him for something and as much as he didn’t want to go, his nerves made him leave. Both Sizhui and Jingyi panicked and tried to get him back. They managed to do so later at night and told you to meet him at Koi Tower. You said it was late and preferred to do it another time, but they insisted. So you went.
You were so happy you went. Turns out, Jin Ling just wanted to propose! He was so scared, you’d never seen him like that before so it kind of scared you too. Turns out, he was just proposing. You’d never been so  happy and started saying yes before he even started his speech. Both Jingyi and Sizhui watched from a hidden place and will never stop talking about how shy and nervous Jin Ling was. He acts angry… but deep down, that’s his second most treasured memory. The first is marrying you, of course
“I-I wasn’t nervous! Why would I be nervous! This is easy business and I… I… ok… I was terrified. I’m glad you said yes, because I can’t imagine not spending my life with you. So you better not break my heart… and I won’t break yours. I swear.”
Ouyang Zizhen:
You’d been together for almost eight years now, the longest out of all your friends. Zizhen had wanted to propose almost four years prior, but always had this feeling you’d say no. It took a while for his friends to convince him otherwise and that’s when he started to finally plan when to propose. Valentine’s Day.
Sizhui, Jingyi, and Jin Ling all helped plan it all. The four of them came up with the perfect date idea for you two. All day, you would celebrate Valentine’s day. Then, you two would come home and Zizhen would give you the last present of the day… a ring and ask you to marry him.
Did it go well? Kind of. The date was so fun that you didn’t want to leave the festival that ran late at night. No matter what, you just wanted to stay. All four of them were terrified that you might be too late for him to propose ON Valentine’s Day. However, just at the last second, Jin Ling managed to get the ring and give it to Zizhen, who took you aside FIVE MINUTES BEFORE MIDNIGHT to finally propose.
You’d never been this happy. Tears streamed down your face as you listened to Zizhen’s rather rushed speech. He explained he wanted to do it ON Valentine’s Day and they were already late. You said yes right before midnight and failed to notice three men hiding behind bushes celebrating Zizhen’s victory.
“You really said yes… you really said yes! I’m the happiest man alive right now and I will be for the rest of our lives! Stay with me, forever. Stay with me and we can be happy together, no matter what happens. As long as I have you with me… I don’t need anything else.”
My brain won't shut up about it so here's my Let Jin Ling inherit Lotus Pier Agenda:
No golden core transfer happens. We'll take Wen Ning's golden core reveal and place it before that mess ever happens. He times it just right, so that Jiang Cheng won't be dying anymore out of his unwillingness to live and before they go to the mountain to perform the operation. He's a sad depressed grape about it but he'll live.
Sunshot Campaign is still won without Wei WuXian's demonic cultivation. Let him invent a bomb talisman or whatever. Either way Meng Yao kills Wen Rouhan and Sunshot Campaign is won. What we need here is for YanLi and Jin Zixuan to be on better terms. (Make it so that their relationship is unlabeled but they are definitely in love.) Anyway, YanLi helps the war effort with her soup, Jiang Cheng still recruits people for Yunmeng (acting as YanLi's speaker more or less. I refuse to leave you a useless grape Jiang Cheng!) And Wei WuXian fights alongside Lan Wangji (develop their romance here too, if you want)
YanLi becomes sect leader (I've read a few no golden core transfer and this usually happens. Lol this is the main thing that made me think of the Jin Ling gets Lotus Pier agenda.) Wei WuXian isn't drinking his life away here since no throwing people to burial mounds happened. YanLi, since she wasn't heir, doesn't really know how do to the sect leader-ing at all. They all don't anyway, but Jiang Cheng at least has some knowledge about it so what happens is YanLi becomes more of a figurehead while Jiang Cheng runs Lotus Pier. YanLi and Wei WuXian figured that it is for the best, even if Jiang Cheng insists on teaching his sister how she refuses. Jiang Cheng needs to do something or else he's just going to be a depressed grape in the corner and both don't like seeing their little brother self deprecate like that. Still, Jiang Cheng can't very much represent Yunmeng Jiang so YanLi does that. We know that she won't easily bow down to others or bite her tongue (lol especially if you insult her siblings, you don't insinuate that Wei WuXian isn't her brother or that Jiang Cheng is useless because he has no core. She will fight you. Have her channel that for all of Yunmeng and you have a very strong willed leader in the face of public.)
The freeing the Wen Remnants happens. (Yes we're still doing that) say that during Sunshot Campaign, yes Wei WuXian never did demonic cultivation but he did expand on his theory. He still takes them to burial mounds (because who's stupid enough to follow them there?) Here's when Wei WuXian actually dabbles with demonic cultivation (cause my friend said he's sexy when doing his necromancy thing and I will respect that). He needs it to protect the Wen Remnants. We also get the whole "Come to Gusu with me." From Lan Wangji.
Jiang Cheng is the one who's stupid enough to follow them to the burial mounds. He's mad about it. It reflects on their sister, of course he's going to be mad about it. They are still idiots and they fight, more of a hissy fight than stabby and break-your-arm fight because Wei WuXian won't hurt his bro like that. The cultivation world saw the advisor/secondhand in command of Yunmeng Jiang leave Burial Mounds all angry and just started the rumor mill that Wei WuXian is kicked out of the sect. Jiang Cheng, of course, regrets his hissy fight with Wei WuXian for three reasons, 1) now the world thinks that they won't support his brother, 2) he overstepped his sister's authority (as much as he runs Lotus Pier, and the desciples and Yanli see him more as their leader, he still puts YanLi's authority over his), 3.) Wei WuXian is the strongest cultivator of Yunmeng Jiang. They are almost defenseless without him. The world praises them for "doing the right thing" though so clearing up the misunderstanding seems a little dangerous, especially with Lotus Pier still weak so they just never commented on it.
YanLi who was pretty chill with her position with her baby brothers' backing is suddenly shown how cutthroat the politics is. She had initially thought that she can one day step down and give the throne to it's rightful owner once the world calms down. She and Jin Zixuan were kinda together, unlabeled relationship and all that and she still wanted that life she was raised for. But with Wei WuXian in burial mounds, Jiang Cheng with no cultivation and how the cultivation world is, her big sister instincts kicks in and decides to fully sacrifice that dream life, telling Jin Zixuan that they should stop, whatever it is they are doing because she is a Sect Leader now and Jin Zixuan is the heir of Lanling Jin.
Jin Zixuan is in love with YanLi. He's also seen how Jin Guangyao is more or less running Lanling Jin at this point. He tells his brother (who at this point is probably planning his murder using Wei WuXian one way or another) that he's planning to secede and marry into the Jiang Sect. Jin Guangyao in his head: I can work with this.
Jin Guangshan dies after Jin Zixuan secedes. (Any father would die of heart attack if their only legitimate son eloped with the woman of his dreams!) Jin Guangyao already has enough backing to take over, Jin Zixuan's support is just bonus. It helps that Gusu Lan also supports him as well as Yunmeng Jiang.
Jin Zixuan marrying into the Jiang brought them a strong cultivator (I think he should be strong anyway), money and a reassurance that Lanling Jin, the sect offended by Wei WuXian the most, won't be waging war against them. (Mo XuanYu is with Jin Zixuan when he left, an attempt by Jin Guangyao to remove yet another rival to the throne from Lanling. It would also be better to kill him away from Lanling if it ever comes down to that.)
With the shit that's happening in Lanling (the heir seceding, the sect leader dying and his illegitimate son inheriting) the world forgot about Wei WuXian's Wen remnants (let's say that it took awhile before Jin Zixuan solidified his resolve to secede just so the attention on Wei WuXian's Wen Remnants would die down first before the new biggest scandal in the cultivation world arises). While the whole world is eating up the happenings in Lanling, Yunmeng Jiang invited Wei WuXian and his Wen remnants into Yunmeng, first making them give up their names to join. Wen Qing and Wen Ning (making him a fierce corpse is gonna make things hard so let's just not) are probably going to be taken in as prisoners of war or something. They can say that the non cultivators among them perished in Burial Mounds. People are free to go to the burial mounds to check if they wanted to. Then again the world will probably only know this in YanLi's wedding... That's attended by all the great sect's leaders so really all the people who has issues with it can do is to gossip.
Jin Ling is Jiang Ling now. Heir of Lotus Pier. He gets Sandu instead of Suihua because Jin Zixuan is very much alive and Jin Ling loves his Jiujiu, he'd rather inherit Sandu than have his own sword. (Jiang Cheng giving him Sandu is his symbolical "I'm happy even without my cultivation now/I'm giving up on the what ifs of my life") He's still very close to his jiujiu because it's his jiujiu who teaches him how to be a good sect leader (no way in hell I'm giving up my Jin Ling and his Jiujiu feels!) The Jiang family is very much complete (and Jiang "I compensate with my lack of cultivation by making strong Cultivators marry into my sect" Cheng and the Lans are still arguing whether it's Wei WuXian who will marry into the Gusu Lan or it's Lan Wangji marrying into the Jiang)
