E, Series, WIP, 184k, Wangxian
Summary: A night-hunt goes wrong, and Wei Wuxian is scapegoated for the death of the Jiang Sect Leader and the destroyed core of the Jiang Sect Heir. As punishment, his core is taken and given to Jiang Cheng, and he is stripped of his cultivation credentials and expelled from the sect.
What everyone forgot was that Wei Wuxian was wearing the standard issue body camera that each cultivator wore on training missions and high-risk night-hunts. Struggling to make ends meet, Wei Wuxian finds his way to Caiyi Town with the doctor who performed the surgery, a partial core still secretly in place. His application to work at Cloud Recesses is summarily rejected by the hard-edged Second Jade of Lan after an unfortunate initial encounter.
But things change when someone hacks into the Jiang systems and releases the footage of what happened.
Kay's comments: The series is still a WIP, but the main story is complete! I am so weak for Kizu's modern AUs with cultivation, they are great. Especially the world building and how the cultivation society might function in a modern AU shines in this story. Definitely not a story for fans of the Jiang family, but a story for everyone who wants to see some retribution for the things Wei Wuxian went through. Here, Jiang Fengmian dies during a night-hunt accident where Jiang Cheng's golden core gets destroyed and Madam Yu makes Wei Wuxian give his golden core to him, unfortunately for her, his body-cam is still filming everything. Wei Wuxian finds himself taken in by Wen Qing and her family and we get the sweetest found family and Dadxian vibes here and then meets Lan Wangji as well, who's highly judgemental at first but soon finds himself drawn to Wei Wuxian as well. This story really got it all, the drama, the horny, the softness, the restitution & humor.
Excerpt: Still Wei Wuxian forced himself to at least try one last time.
“You could also interview me. Have me talk to your best talisman experts,” Wei Wuxian said, forcing himself to keep the desperation out of his voice.
“Interviews are scheduled based on receipt of proper credentials and references.”
“I don’t have any, at least not right now. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be a great teacher.”
“No references, no interview.”
“Come on. Look, ask me anything about talismans. You’re an experienced cultivator, right? So you must know enough to at least interview me to see if I know what I’m talking about.”
“Simply ‘knowing about something’ is not sufficient. Our lecturers are renown cultivators, and masters in their fields. No references, no interview.”
Wei Wuxian felt frustration well up in him, especially at the reminder that Lan Wangji didn’t see him as a cultivator. No one would, in his current condition. Why would they? He didn’t have a functional core, which was the main scale against which all cultivation efforts were measured. He thought he had done a good job of not getting his hopes up about the teaching position, but the suffocating feeling constricting his chest was calling him out for being a liar.
He should have known better. Why did he never learn? Some people had luck on their said, but Wei Wuxian had never been one of them.
“Right. Of course. Because it would be impossible for someone who wasn’t born to the fucking clan nobility to ever actually be good at something, and the cost of taking the mastery test makes sure that other people can’t do it!”
Lan Wangji’s lips parted slightly, like he might say something, but his expression was as opaque and emotionless as before. Wei Wuxian didn’t need to sit around and listen to him defend the clan system.
“Good to know that the Lan are just the same as all the other sects,” Wei Wuxian continued, his lips twisting into a sarcastic smile. “Thanks for making that clear.”
pov alternating, modern setting, modern with magic, yu ziyuan being an asshole, dysfunctional jiang family, jiang family bashing, canon divergence, golden core reveal, burial mounds ensemble as family, golden core transfer, golden core transfer fix-it, top lan wangji/bottom wei wuxian, dual cultivation, strangers to lovers, misunderstandings, meet ugly, families of choice, hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort

Maybe a chengxian' meeting post-canon? Platonic or romantic, as you prefer
100 years later, I have given up and concussed Jiang Cheng in the name of love and yunmeng shuangjie reconciliation. You know, if it's not working, give it a smack!
-
This wasn’t precisely the way that he had imagined this reunion going, reflected Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng lay across his lap, blood smeared dark against his forehead, face illuminated by a streak of moonlight.
Not that he’d imagined seeing Jiang Cheng again. Well—not on purpose—sometimes it crossed his mind, when he saw Jin Ling out of the corner of his eye. Something about the posture was very like Jiang Cheng as a teenager, if a little more brash and impulsive. Jiang Cheng had always been more hesitant in public, aware of the eyes on him.
Anyway, it had occurred to him, mostly against his will, when he saw Jin Ling or he smelled the sword oil Jiang Cheng had favoured (still favoured?) or someone mentioned Lotus Pier. He’d flung it away each time for some future version of him to deal with. Now the future was here, and it sucked.
Wei Wuxian squinted at the ray of moonlight. At least they wouldn’t be suffocated. The section of the cave they were trapped in had at least one opening that went up to the outside world.
They had tracked a very strange yao back to the cave where it lived, him and Lan Zhan and the juniors, and crossed paths with a Jiang team led by Jiang Cheng himself following the same kind of yao. Unfortunately, it seemed that they lived in packs. The resulting fight had gone badly. An over-eager hit from Lan Jingyi had smashed one into the wall, and that had triggered a cave-in, and now Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian were alone in the dark together behind an enormous pile of rocks. On top of everything else, Jiang Cheng was unconscious, which Wei Wuxian really did not like.
The only thing he could think of to do was prop Jiang Cheng up in his lap and wait for him to come to. He didn’t know what Jiang Cheng would make of it when he woke up, but Wei Wuxian decided that he would cross that bridge when he came to it.
Jiang Cheng groaned and opened his eyes. “What happened?” he asked.
Wei Wuxian looked down at his face, and winced. Those pupils were not supposed to be different sizes.
“You took a hard hit to the head,” said Wei Wuxian, as cheerfully as he could. “Just stay still, will you? Rescue is on the way!”
He assumed, anyway. Lan Zhan wouldn’t just leave him here. He was very reliable like that.
“Rescue? Why the hell are we being rescued? What did we do this time?” complained Jiang Cheng. Something about his voice tugged at Wei Wuxian. It was less assertive that it usually was, tired, almost—whiny?
“You don’t remember?” said Wei Wuxian. This was bad. This was very bad. “There was a yao. Actually, there were quite a few yaos…”
Jiang Cheng let out a disapproving little huff. Distantly, Wei Wuxian noted that he had made no effort to get up from Wei Wuxian’s lap.
“If we’re late to dinner again, A-jie will be upset,” he mumbled.
Wei Wuxian froze. This was very bad indeed.

I just hate it when people try to 'fix' WWX's fear of dogs.
The dude has a legitimate reason to be frightened of them after what he's been through and as long as it doesn't affect his life and make him miserable - which it really doesn't, he's scared and runs off and now he's got a hit husband to save him and make him feel safe - why make it an issue?
Not everyone likes dogs, not everyone has to compromise and face a fear because someone else has a dog.
Why is it always WWX who has to 'get over' his fear in these fanfics? Why aren't others more understanding of his fears and keeping the dog away or leaving it at home - which you'll notice canon JL actually starts to do, especially in the extra when they are on a night-hunt.
I just think it's really inconsiderate of people to down play WWX's fear and make him "get over it" so he can play happy families as some double uncle team with JC - which is less likely to happen than WWX getting over his fear of dogs! Then again, considering the plot dynamic of these "fix it" fics, full of ooc shit they wouldn't do... I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

trapped without escape scenario. jc and lwj. only one living person can leave. jc argues that because his sect will be fine w/o him, and jl is doing well, it should be lwj bec. wwx needs him.
and lwj has to talk him into a compromise where jc drowns him, drags him out and then revives him. bec. wwx will not be fine w/o jc alive in this world. this is asking a lot from lwj bc. jc is doubtful. lwj has to recount almost every instance of wwx longly talking about jc. this is made more terrible than it already is because at some point, jc tries to reassure him that wwx clearly is totally gone on lwj and much happier with him than he ever was in jc's company. this is uncomfortable because jc is so clearly hurt by wwx's avoidance and so earnestly happy that wwx has found happiness. lwj has had a very clear one-dimensional picture of jc in his head for over a decade and now jc is doing things that are not one-dimensional, don't fit what lwj has taken as truth for almost half his life and lwj doesn't enjoy this.
eventually, lwj is gently drowned (they put him to sleep first bec. jc insists that drowning is traumatic), dragged out of the trap and then revived via mouth to mouth resuscitation and gentle zappings of zidian. jc then proceeds to carry him out of the trap and choke the people who sprung the trap to death. lwj groggily approves of jc telling them that they were fools to try and go after wwx via them, jc even thinks of asking after the people who set this plan into motion. jc then takes lwj to an inn where jc takes care of lwj who, to his dawning horror, realizes that wwx and jc are similar in their bedside manner.
eventually, jc takes lwj back to cloud recess where wwx is already worrying and ready to fuss over him. jc, in spite of everything lwj has told him, is going to quietly leave. never saying anything! which is why lan wangji is forced to invite him in for tea. (this invitation is incredibly awkward and truly unfortunately phrased but it clearly costs lan wangji so much to extend this olive branch that jiang cheng can't refuse.) wwx has no idea what is going on but somehow jc and lwj are getting almost along?

I just finished the fourth mdzs novel and I've gotta say this one has to be the wildest in terms of tone whiplash. You look at the book cover and it's very cute, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji hanging out in a tree with their bunnies, being sweet and flirty. You open the book and the first hundred pages are Wei Wuxian being incredibly violent and vindictive in graphic ways, and then having a grief-induced mental health crisis that results in hundreds if not thousands of people's deaths, including his own. You flip to the end of the book and he's flooding an inn because he and Lan Wangji are having sex in a bathtub. It's great.
