Pick a Pile: autumn message + vibes + Halloween special
Hi everyone! I was not expecting this to be my first PAC but I felt called to do it. We’ll get a message of the season for you, the autumn vibes your energy gave off, and an extra message based on something spooky for Halloween! Hope you enjoy :]
Disclaimer: for entertainment only! The “autumn vibes” are Fall imagery that your energy reminded me of; “extra details” are real-life details of some people in the pile. I read with tarot, oracle, and my intuition. This reading used the Tarot of Mystical Moments, a recolored Smith-Waite tarot, and homemade oracle cards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pile 1 ➝Pile 2
Pile 3➝Pile4
Pile 1:
Message [the Empress rx, Death rx, the World rx|| ace of cups]: hi pile 1! You guys may be having trouble with the energy of release that the later months bring. There’s an overarching grief or melancholy for autumn; it feels like an emptiness where someone used to be. Try to have self compassion by getting extra rest and self care while you process emotions. Enjoying the celebratory or traditional energy of the holidays could brighten your spirits (even if you do something small by yourself); I do see many of you are very into Halloween and decorations. Pouring into self love and understanding is a good focal point. A portion of you are already in a committed relationship, and accepting the comfort and warmth of your partner will also be helpful.
Autumn vibes: black birds flying into a dusky sky, crystal balls, long black dresses, old movies, blurry/grainy videos, dark makeup and stiletto nails, matte lipstick, purple sunsets, hanging out with friends until night, denim jackets, dark rooms with old rugs, feeling deep nostalgia, looking through old photos and cameras, yellow street lights in empty parking lots, a vague but deep longing, skulls, pumpkins, visiting a relative, Warmth by Mityrion
Halloween extra—Vampire [five of wands, two of cups rx]: I channeled a vampire very strongly for you! Your energy came through before I decided to do the reading lol, you might have an imposing presence. There’s an alluring and magnetic aspect to you; others could feel hypnotized. The message I’m getting is you‘re attracting a lot of attention, and everyone wanting your energy may be overwhelming. Some of you have energy vampires around; those who make you ill at ease and are always seeking you even if it only causes conflict. You are more interested in solitude and peace. Some of you are content in a monogamous relationship and are getting bothered by others who have feelings for you. You may be bombarded with platonic or romantic invitations, and dance around people’s feelings with strategy so they don’t blow up at you. You are powerful and intelligent; make sure to protect your energy from draining sources!
Extra details: may tap fingers/fingernails on desk a lot, taking care of a grandma or was close to a passed grandma (for some of you I’m seeing white hair in a big bun/updo and circular glasses), missing passed loved ones in general. Meghan Markle or the British royal family could be significant? Black hair, curled bangs, interest in the occult. Twilight (both the time of day and the movies/books), “dark” feminine or femme fatale energy, someone madly in love or infatuated, Bojack Horseman, scorpio, 8th house, dances
~~~
Pile 2:
Message [the Moon rx, three of pentacles, Judgment|| the Sun]: hi pile 2! The energy of autumn you guys seem to be embodying is harvest and celebration! It looks like this year has been a journey in terms of healing repressed parts of yourself (heavily related to your Halloween message). After putting in the work, the current time is about enjoying the fruits of your healing. You’ve come out of the lessons with a greater capacity for appreciation and joy. For most of you, it looks like your loved ones or peers have been a big part of this growth; I do see you guys like to spend a lot of time out with friends. You have a clean slate for this new version of yourself, and you’re encouraged to continue basking in the blessings with those you love.
Autumn vibes: soft cotton flannels, knit hats (with pom-poms), boots, rural areas/small towns, orange leaves scattered everywhere, long walks, hanging out with your friends in the middle of nowhere until nightfall, hot coffee, hot chocolate with marshmallows, the woods, leather jackets, knit scarves, snowy mountains in the horizon, stepping on leaves even when they’re not crunchy, getting scared while exploring old buildings, local scary legends, snow crunching underfoot, trying to warm your hands, baking, drinking hot apple cider when it’s ice-cold out
Halloween extra—Cryptid [the Empress, the Star]: I channeled a cryptid for you pile 2! I don’t know a lot about specific cryptids, but I was mainly seeing something very hairy, humanoid, and bat-like. A small portion of you may resonate more with the Loch Ness Monster. The message I’m getting here is you guys have or are currently recognizing who you are and accepting that. In the past you may have conformed to others’ standards and this bred self hate or lack of self entirely. A place of self love and understanding is the focus, where you accept all your quirks and individuality even if others can’t. Some of you may be making peace with your expression of gender after turning away from it. You’re removing parts of yourself that are inauthentic or performative, and this is fueling the blessings you’re currently receiving!
Extra details: glasses (particularly a thick black frame), buying coffee (or hot drinks) out very frequently, taking aesthetic Instagram pics, the midwest, very cold Fall and Winter, small but close friend groups, light blonde hair, clumsy, hesitant, patient, moving somewhere warm or farther south; relatives with a thick Southern accent, bread, drawing/painting, millennials, the British Isles, Samhain
~~~
Pile 3:
Message [king of wands, the Emperor rx, the Fool rx|| the Sun]: hello pile 3! Interestingly, all the piles so far are getting similar advice in different fonts 😅. You are also getting a message about embodying the more joyous aspects of Fall’s harvest energy. You guys are in a mindset of doing what needs to be done according to your responsibilities and not much more. You may feel dissatisfied with the same old routine but not feeling up to doing anything else. This is the stoic farmer bringing in his crops to prepare for Winter rather than a lively harvest festival (metaphorically). You’re being encouraged to embrace that latter energy and warm your spirits in some Fall celebration—even if it’s finding ways to cheer yourself up in your head. Clouds do give way to sunshine!
Autumn vibes [TW paranoia, creepiness]: a single light on in pitch blackness, going to the kitchen in the dead of night, feeling alone yet watched, staring into the void, cloudy and dusty blue skies, cool coastal towns, eerie emptiness, liminal spaces, lighthouses, cold waves breaking on rocks, quiet solitude, lovecraftian-horror novels, the smell of tobacco, libraries in the evening, dark circles, feeling like the only person in the world, blurry faces in the distance
Halloween extra—Ghost [the Tower, the Empress]: many of you already feel like a ghost, disconnected from everything. A major upset happened that you’re still not “over.” This event shook you to the core and even destroyed some sense of self. Afterwards until now, you’ve been going through the motions and trying to survive, but not really “living.” However, I see that the metaphorical dust has settled. Now that things are not so unstable, you can come out of just “being” and start “doing.” What felt like the end was not, it was the prologue for something new.
Extra details: being blunt, the month of October or number 10 could be significant (besides it being Halloween), sitting in shopping carts, nihilism/apathy, smoking, denim jackets, the NorthEast US or cold, coastal areas. Reading. A town with a very small population. Big, empty parking lots, Lorde (particularly the song Team), feeling numb, grief, spooky video games, having lost a friend or friends being worried about you, being the breadwinner or living alone, dominant, money, spark of hope, standing alone on the beach
~~~
Pile 4:
Message [the Star rx, seven of wands, the Moon|| king of pentacles]: hi pile 4! It feels like you guys have been in a situation where stress is mounting very slowly but constantly. You could feel upcoming respite, but you’re not quite there yet. For a lot of you this feels like holding out for an upcoming break (maybe a holiday break). You guys are embodying the liminal, aimless energy that the last moments of the year bring. You may already feel like you’re in those strange days right before New Year’s where everything feels up in the air and you have no idea what’s going to happen; there’s a sense of not knowing what to do in the future. That’s what potential feels like! Autumn is reminding you that success and bounty comes out of uncertainty.
Autumn vibes: reading comic books in the evening by lamplight, making a big deal of your Halloween costume, trick or treating, costume parties, mounds of candy, watching the Sun fall behind the cityscape, old TVs, watching cartoons and funny Halloween movies into the night, wrapping in a tiny blanket, leaves brushing past while you walk, going to other neighborhoods to see the holiday decorations, varsity jackets, hands in your pockets, seeing your breath in the air, days getting short but feeling long, indulging childhood nostalgia, kids running down the street with capes, enjoying the cool air
Halloween extra—Shadow Person [the Star, page of wands]: for you guys, I’m channeling shadow people. I heard, “he’s just standing there… menacingly!!” Funnily, for other pile’s Halloween specials their energy and message matched the creature well, but for you guys it feels different. I think it’s because you have a more lighthearted energy, like if you were a shadow person you would troll people for laughs lol. Anyway, your cards seem to say the same thing! You guys have already gone in and out of really dark times—you’ve been in the shadow and separated your identity from it. Even if you’re in one right now, you’re not at the lowest point you’ve been and there’s potential for positive change. You’ve gone through the ringer probably more than once. You’re trying to ride the waves of life with a laugh after seeing the cyclical ridiculousness. You’re encouraged to use what you’ve been through to examine life from a new perspective of both light and shadow. Other people may not understand you at all without having your experience, but their perception doesn’t determine what you are or do.
Extra details: you guys may REALLY like comic book superheroes and villains (specifically DC; catwoman and the penguin? Also Spiderman), the hat man, goofy energy, conventions, an urban area with a lot of beige + brown buildings, swinging your hands while you walk, jacket pockets, high school, peace, religious friends or community, baptisms, lively churches, cartoon crossovers, planning to move once you finish this chapter of life, water is a very significant element; you might like sea animals, deep emotional world, strength, graduations, coming off as intimidating, not knowing what to do next, winter break, missionaries, Steve Lacy, Freddy Krueger
julian day headcanons 📆
Tumblr media
theme-related
the big concepts: cycles, order, the human need to establish order in a chaotic universe, commemoration, seeking patterns, rituals
according to julian, calendars and cycles allow us to feel some control over the yawning void of time, breaking its enormity into 365 bite-sized pieces.
his favorite cycles are holidays, the 7 days of a week, the 12 months, the seasons, the farming cycle (seeding, harvesting, etc) and like moons with special names and shit, equinoxes, leap years, anniversaries, the lunar cycle, the advent, the zodiac, and saint days
other favorite concepts: birthdays, new years’ resolutions, the origins of holidays, finity (a calendar after all is just one year), memento mori ⌛️
interested as shit in alternative calendars like precolumbian calendars, eastern/lunar, and egyptian
backstory
(canon from long halloween) orphan, exploited by the system and by foster parents
surrendered anonymously by his birth parents on february 12, hence named for St. Julian whose feast day is feb 12
assigned a birthday of february 1 but doesn’t consider this his actual birthday; in his opinion his birthday is unknown which bothers yet intrigues him
was fostered at one point by the wealthy but detached Day family for tax breaks, and they’re the ones who kept him locked up for long stretches before he was eventually returned to the system
the Days were catholic and he would pass the time by reading the book of saints’ feast days he found in their house. also woe religious trauma be upon ye
spent a good few years on the streets as a runaway between homes. eventually ended up in juvenile detention for stealing, where he spent a lot of time in solitary confinement
there was like 10 solid years between when he turned 18 and when he started doing crime where he was alright, struggling financially but getting along
miscellaneous
he/they
6’0”, almost as tall as batman. (i rlly enjoy about him that he’s one of few batman rogues (and characters in general) whose appearance don’t correspond to their theme i.e. riddler is small and wiry and his power is intellectual, scarecrow is gangly and skeletal and his power is spookiness. calendar man is kinda esoteric and conceptual and he’s (in some adaptations) great big for no particular reason. i love how his voice catches you off guard). haven’t decided on a preference for him between buff but sorta toned like he was a skinny kid who decided to work out while he was in arkham, or bulky with a sort of caber-tossing physique of both strength and fat. both are good.
alopecia areata, started losing his hair at around ten and it was gone by 13.
ocd. counts stuff not exactly compulsively but to relax and pass the time, sometimes unconsciously. favorite numbers, naturally, are 4, 7, 12, 28, 30, 31, 52 and 365.
says he isn’t motivated by revenge but by a desire to enlighten people. (lying and/or wrong) (he is motivated by revenge)
more jealous, petty, emotional than he likes to admit to himself or others
he has hobbies other than calendars that aren’t mentioned because they’re not relevant to batman’s journey. he likes film, especially old movies (this is me projecting), botany and paleontology
gay but flirts with women but not in a genuine way; he’s just being polite and debonair. like the guy who’ll kiss an old lady on the hand and ask if the woman who’s clearly her daughter is her sister, that kind of old-world charm. i’ll hear bi as well i’m not picky
ace spec (grey)
likes to take very good care of his appearance. being that he doesn’t have any hair and that he’s often in a uniform, there isn’t that much he can do to impact how he looks in arkham, so he takes what control he can by growing out his nails and then filing them round, and by doin a lil makeup
top 2 most requested items in arkham are calendars and eyeliner
doesn’t generally wear the complimentary arkham assigned grippy socks - being barefoot makes him feel more connected/grounded. plus he read online it’s good for your health
astrology bitch that has everyone’s charts memorized. thinks astrology is ridiculous and made up but this is also his relationship with all holidays and date systems so he still loves astrology. philosophically intriguing to him. especially loves bothering the Staunchly anti astrology rogues with it (riddler.)
bit of a history buff who knows the significant historical events from every date in the year. gotham history and world history
likes quoting ‘thirty days hath september’ but thinks, and readily admits, that it’s a very sloppy rhyme.
one on one, he will small talk. especially if you’re in a hurry and he wants to be annoying. but in a group setting, like a team-up, he’s usually the one who does not talk until he has something important to say.
actively trained himself out of his natural jersey accent because he thought that it, combined with his looks, made him come across as a mook. speaks softly and in a tiny bit of a falsetto to counteract his intimidating build. picked up a bit of a trans atlantic accent from film. difficult to provoke but when he wants to raise his voice he doesn’t, like, shout or change his tone, he just, like, increases the volume of his usual voice
relationships
actively friends with: catwoman, mr freeze (freeze keeps everyone at a distance but CM holds him in high esteem), ivy, harley, ragdoll, toymaker
him and scarecrow are passive aggressive. they are polite and civil but it takes like one sentence to provoke them to physical violence. they squabble over halloween. him and anarky also fight over nov 5. him and music meister don’t fight over anything, they just hate each others’ vibes. him and zsasz can be alopecia buddies but i hesitate to suggest they actually like each other.
he’s worked with joker once or twice but that does not mean he likes him, also has a deep distaste for professor pyg. he has nothing but respect for bane but bane thinks he’s silly.
i love when jokey/forgotten rogues are in a gang. like he should be pals with tally man. square and sharp. there’s one person on here who ships him with eraser and like that’s just fine. me if i had to pick a ship i’d say maybe mr bloom or maybe polka dot man. there’s a couple of riddlers that’d like him for being Stronk but also Intellectual like maybe dano or carrey
he’s in the arkham theater troupe with clayface and babydoll but he does costumes (who wouldn’t want a costume by the guy who made calendar man’s costume shdjdjs)
notes: i love that TLH tried so hard to make calendar man cool and kind of succeeded? like what seemed like an objectively stupid theme can actually be kinda cool depending how you play it. i stuck with the TLH movie for most of my hcs for “my” version of him but versions that are 1) small 2) a disaster (B:TBATB, TLH comic, etc). i just think it’s funny to have calendar man of all people have a tiny bit of class. mix it up
Gravity Falls was so so so important to me as a someone who literally grew up with Dipper and Mabel. I was 13 when the show came out and going into my last year of elementary school. Super socially awkward, anxious, ect. But I knew the show was going to be my favourite from the moment I saw the commercials (im talking the teaser commercials where you dont even see the characters at all.)
I related a lot to Dipper because of those reasons and because I just loved spooky mysteries and being awkward at every moment, wanting to be taken seriously. As I got older, I realized I understood just how Mabel felt when she rejected the idea of growing up. I have a sister around my age, so I also related to Dipper and Mabel's close bond a lot. The show just clicked with me. When it ended, I had literally just turned 17 the week before. Really, it felt like the pefect bookend to such a specific core moment of my teenage life. 4 years of cracking codes and making theories and fanart. Plus, I started this blog not too long after the show started (2013 I think??) So the show was also my first time connecting with people online that also had the same interests as me, which was important because up until like 2016/2017 I knew literally nobody that liked the show irl.
Tumblr media
The show pretty much shaped not only my interests as a teenager, but fundamentally changed my artistic goals as well. I suddenly knew what kind of art I wanted to make and it was a huge stepping off point for someone who felt kinda lost. I'm not even talking about just the show itself; I watched AMVs religiously, read fan comics and fanfiction, and reblogged fanart like it was my job. It inspired me to draw my own fanart, and just last year got back into drawing fanart for the first time since the show ended.
Tumblr media
Back in February, I rewatched Weirdmageddon and made some drawings for the 6th anniversary of the finale. And it opened up this nostalgia again and I was suddenly drawing fanart for 2 months straight. Not only that, but it started getting traction on Tumblr for the first time ever and i was like????? Okay I'll take that. And then I learned that the Gravity Falls fandom was suddenly more active than it had in years and scrambled to follow all these awesome artists.
I'm just so grateful for the joy Gravity Falls brought me as a teenager, especially during difficult times, and the joy it continues to bring me as an adult. This show is so special for so many reasons and I'm just endlessly happy that the stars just happen to align to allow me to experience it at the right time.
¡Hola! Since it's October, will you make mood boards of Spanish folklore, myths, etc.? Will you also do one for Xmas traditions when December comes? (i.e. ones exclusive to Spain)
Hola ^^ I didn't thought of it since Halloween is not a big thing here, at least not in the sense that is not a tradition, although everyone knows I love the spooky mood. But I'm totally open to upload more spanish folklore/myths related things, like pieces I have made in the past, like the Xanas and La Santa Compaña, or those based in spanish romantic tales like Los Ojos Verdes or El Monte de las Ánimas. So yeah, you can expect me to upload more this month or any month, I have in mind another folklore based aesthetic, not spanish, but I'm waiting for the winter to do it, since it's related to it. About Christmas traditions, there is not that much to add to be honest, the holiday period goes from the 21st or 22nd of December to at least the 6th of January. Families have dinner together the 24th and the 31st of December, eat together the 25th of December and 1st of January, the night of the 31st, we the clock hits midnight most people eat 12 grapes, usually that same night people go to party until it's sunrise, and the breakfast of the 1st of January is a cup of chocolate with churros. Santa Claus is called here Papá Noel, and usually is just very little kids the ones that have any kind of present the 25th, tradition here usually makes kids ask presents from Los Reyes Magos, so it's the morning of 6th of January when most of the people have presents to open. The previous evening there is a parade where candy get's throwed to the people. There is a special dessert, called roscón de reyes, that is eaten in those days, some people start eating it the evening of the 5th, some wait until it's the 6th. And for decoration, besides what you can associate to christmas, there is people that add El Belén, that is a representation of the town of Bethlehem when the virgin Mary gave birth. May sound like a lot of things, but truly different aren't that much. In case that you are interested here are pictures linked of the things I said:
Belén Los Reyes Magos Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos Chocolate con Churros Roscón de Reyes + Tió de Nadal (this is just typical in catalonia) It's a Christmas log, that child's have to take care off, and the christmas day he will give small presents to them, big presents are still brought by the Three Wise Men
Hey ya’ll! Since starting this true crime blog in January, I have received so much love & support and I cannot thank you enough! When starting this I really only expected to get 100 followers, that was my goal. But now it is the beginning of September and I have close to 600! I never expected this many people would be interested in the kinds of cases I cover, but I am grateful. Because it is now getting into Fall which is my favourite season and Halloween is my favourite time of the year I thought I’d do something special!
I am going to be doing the first annual Conrad’s Crime: 31 Spooky Days of Halloween, where everyday of October I will be posting a true crime case, mostly relating to the theme of Halloween and spooky cases that keep me up at night! While there will still be lots of murder and true crime covered, I will be doing more hauntings and ghost stories for the month of October!
Thank you again for the support, and I am looking forward to sharing 31 spooky cases and stories with you soon!
🎁 [for the Autism Ask game!]
Ask from Here
🎁- What’re your special interests?
A lot of Anime/Video game/Cartoon answers here, I very easily dive and flow between certain obsessions like a dolphin so let’s see.
Up until about a month or so ago I was unbelievably obsessed with Overwatch for... Basically all of 2020. 90% of my brain power was Overwatch, and about 22% is still on about it.
Then I watched Assassination Classroom near the end of 2020 and I got super sucked in. I 100% obsessed over that for about two weeks, and it still jostles in my brain at about 28%
Pokemon Masters’ N event got me back to Pokemon BW, and that road strong for about a week, now it’s at 25%, teetering on less and more by the day, depending on who talks to me in Masters and if I’ll ever pick up BW2 again.
The last 25% of my brain is currently devoted to a less specific fandom: Horror. My mind is enveloped with good horror and the want and need for spooky scary content. Thus why I fell back into reading The Promised Neverland, and also School-Live.
I’m also playing Little Nightmares again, in anticipation the sequel coming out on my birthday. I also want to play Little Misfortune again, because my first experience with it was rough, and I’d like to give it a better shot.
Like I said, I dolphin dive between my fandom special interests. Sometimes something just sweeps me up and I can’t do anything unless it’s related to that specific fandom (Big sorry to my Overwatch crew for not playing for two weeks straight, brain go brr real hard)
A less.. Fandom specific special interest; I’m obsessed with Mushrooms and Birds! I love seeing them, and talking about them, I even own a big book on native fungi species in my area! (It’s not very fascinating, I live in a shit place for Fungal growth)
If you ever see a post with Birds or Mushrooms in it, please send it to me or tag me in it!! It makes my day to see it!!!
20, 15, & 2 for fic ask game!
[Fic writer asks]
2: Do you focus on attention to detail when you read fics? Are you more or less attention to detail focused when you write fics?
It depends on the detail! I love details that build out worlds, but I also zone out when I have to read like 3 paragraphs describing foods or settings. You'll note that my descriptions in my own fics are very brief and spartan or peppered throughout long conversations and actions for this very reason!
On the other hand, I find details such as 'could character do this task with X injury?' or 'if i have established this species does X, then is it realistic for them to have Y behaviour/adaptation/etc?' very interesting and I do focus on those in my writing/reading.
15: Which fic that you’ve written relates to you and your personal life the most?
I actually very rarely write stories/scenes from exact personal experience BUT I do pepper in a lot of small details all over my fics. If there was a gun to my head then maybe I'd go on a limb and say To Exist Again (Spn) and To Become a Man (Spn) are closest in that I can relate to having a complicated family history, moving around a lot growing up and #oldest child mentality. But then again my experience was totally different from Sam&Dean's so ymmv.
Lately my dialogue, when applicable, has been based on how my friends and I talk to one another- down to some specific cadences and speech patterns people I know use in order to bring some life to the conversations. (Seen best in From Eden (Black Sails) between the Ranger trio.
Oh, and Matt nearly breaking his leg after falling off the cage at the gay bar in Paint a Smile On... (voltron) was a personal experience that I thought was really funny to throw into the bg. I adjusted the exact situation for brevity and humor, but end result is the same. Bad hangover and knee brace for a summer.
I always joke about writing a story where the characters work in a bar/restaurant and THEN I will be funneling personal experiences and grievances into that like it's therapy lol.
20: Which fic have you put the most work into? Which fic have you put the least work into?
We'll have to define 'work' because I tend to put a solid amount of effort into everything I write. I'm a bit like a dog with a bone once I start working on a story, and find it difficult to NOT think about it/play with it so I'm technically kind of always working on it.
Most ours spent writing/editing/revising: The Switch the Beat series (voltron) is probably my most intensive, and especially Little Monster (voltron). I was paying very close attention to timelines and dates within the story to make sure it flowed smoothly, despite there being ~3 month gaps between every chapter.
Sunset in Reverse (voltron) also gets special mention here because I picked up a unique editing style for that one, in that I write a first draft, let it sit, and then come back and completely rewrite the whole thing for the second draft. Considering each chapter is a little over 10k in length, I try (tried?) to make sure it was worth the weight and time invested to read it.
Most hours spent researching/planning/prepping: Awake My Soul (the 100) for geographic layouts and survival planning, the Switch the Beat series (again) because so many hours went into planning timelines and events for that entire series so I could break it into 'books'.
Least thought/most vibes: As the lion loves the lamb (spooky voltron lion story), and most of my explicit fics (yes, even the 4050k epics- Royally Screwed (voltron), My Body's Got You Pleading (voltron), etc) were mostly just vibing with where the story should go. Also the Spn stories. Spn lore is choose your own adventure at the best of times.
September Reading Roundup
It's time for this month's reading roundup, but first, a little announcement that no one but me will care about: I'm staying off the internet until the election. Well, mostly. I'll still post to Tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram when the mood strikes me or when I have a writing update. I'll still post Rant Rave Reviews on here and Youtube (the theme this month is spooky stories, of course). But I won't be interacting much (ie, I won't be spending hours reading through Twitter and Tumblr and watching random Youtube videos I've already seen). If you @ me or retweet or reblog a post, I'll probably respond in a day or two, but other than that, I'm becoming a recluse.
The reason for this is twofold. First, I'm offering it up. For those of you who aren't Catholic, "offering it up" is sort of like giving up something for Lent. You discipline yourself by enduring some deprivation (either natural, like pain, or of your own choosing, like not watching hours of Youtube). At the same time, you offer up your (albeit, in this case, slight) suffering as a sacrifice for some good. I'm offering it up for America. Not the election, America. Because, not to get political or anything, but no matter who wins the garbage fire that is the 2020 election, America is doomed unless our culture changes. As I said to a friend recently, if this was the 90s, we could weather whatever storm Trump or Biden brings, but people hate each other so much right now that our country is pretty much over. Unless...
I don't know what I'm praying for, but I'm praying, praying that come what may, God in his Providence will drag something good out of all of it, kicking and screaming if need be. I will also be doing a rosary novena with my diocese October 14th through October 22, and then another one with the USCCB October 26th to November 3rd. Join me if you would like.
On a lighter note, I'm a volunteer writer-in-residence again at my hometown library, so I'm obligated to focus on writing this month, and need write, research, and workshop without distraction. I have two Forensics and Fiction books all tabbed and ready to read, plus a book about army nurses in the Vietnam War. The plot of book one in the alternate-history/fantasy/mystery trilogy is fast congealing, and I want to strike while the iron is hot. I need to focus! My ultimate goal is to be ready to write a little each day in November, returning to my heretical NaNoWriMo ways.
I'll let you know how it all turns out in my first Novemebr post, which will be a reading roundup of October. Until then, let's take a look at what I read this month:
Two Six Shooters Beat Four Aces: Stories of a Young Arizona by Barbara Marriott Ph.D
Genre: History - Anecdotes
Why I read it: Arizona book club pic
What I thought of it: While it's clear that Marriott is an excellent researcher, she is either a bad writer or in serious need of an editor. Individual paragraphs proved internally repetitive, and the overall structure of each chapter was slapdash. It needed smoother transitions from anecdote to anecdote or more section breaks and section headers.
Would I recommend it: No, everyone in my book club, including myself, hated it.
7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
Genre: Supernatural Mystery
Why I read it: I'd been wanting to for a while; the premise caught my eye
What I thought of it: The body-hopping time-loop stuff was brilliant, the characters likable, and the story delightfully twisty. The last twist and conclusion were unsatisfying, though.
Would I recommend it: Yes!! Despite it's flaws, it was an exciting, fun, and original book. I will definitely be reading Turton's next book (which involves a closed circle of suspects and, possibly, demons!?).
The Exorcist by William Blatty
Genre: Horror
Why I read it: I'd been meaning to for a while, and writing research gave me an excuse to do so
What I thought of it: I like that it doesn't pull it's punches; I'm kind of shocked that it's only been censored a couple times, actually. It presents demons as they are: hateful, grotesque jerks who get off on picking on humans. I also liked that there was a murder mystery subplot. I'm not sure I approve 100% of the ending, theologically speaking, but that's a pretty minor quibble.
Would I recommend it: Yes, but it is not for the feint of heart. Trigger warnings for child sexual abuse, adult sexual abuse, language, violence, the works.
How to Destroy America in Three Easy Steps by Ben Shapiro
Genre: Nonfiction - politics
Why I read it: It's a long story that I shall tell about in my memoir of library life, but not here. Also the cover is 10/10
What I thought of it: It was ok. I already knew most of what he said. I disagreed with some of it, like seeing the constant moving of people from town to town in 1950s as a positive thing; in actuality, "company men" in the 50s were moved around so they wouldn't have community ties but instead ties to the company, which is anti-human to the extreme. I did think it was interesting that he combatted the idea of America's greatness being built off the backs of slaves by pointing out that slavery was actually terrible for the south, as reliance on slavery retarded their economic system well after the Civil War.
Would I recommend it: If you're into political books, sure.
American Sherlock: Murder, Forensics, and the Birth of American CSI by Kate Winkler Dawson
Genre: True Crime - forensic history
Why I read it: I love historical true crime
What I thought of it: It was ok, but kind of didn't make the case for him being "The American Sherlock Holmes" (even though people really did call him that back in the day), in that a lot of his conclusions ended up being a little dubious. Still, from a research perspective, it did establish when various forensic practices started being used in the USA.
Would I recommend it: Maybe? I personally liked Father of Forensics more. I'd say this book is, like, 3/5 stars, just because it could have been tightened up a bit.
Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Genre: Horror
Why I read it: It's spooky season!
What I thought of it: Having already seen the movie, I knew pretty much what was going to happen, but I love Gaiman's turn of phrase.
Would I recommend it: Yes, especially for children who are too young for scarier fair but still want a creepy story.
The Horror at Red Hook by H.P. Lovecraft
Genre: Horror
Why I read it: It's still spooky season!
What I thought of it: I honestly liked this a lot more than the Cthulhu mythos stuff. Rather than vague demoniac blasphemies or black cyclopean gulfs, there's a real tangible cult that sacrifices (reanimated?) corpses to a pale, dancing, snickering Thing on a golden pedestal. I dig it.
Would I recommend it: Yes. Just... ignore the racism. That goes for all of Lovecraft's stuff, by the by.
Herbert West: Reanimator by H.P. Lovecraft
Genre: Horror
Why I read it: Turns out I like HP Lovecraft. Who knew?
What I thought of it: You gotta love mad scientists who try to reanimate the dead, right? I think this one would make an excellent mini-series.
Would I recommend it: Yes.
Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh
Genre: Essay - illustration/comics
Why I read it: I loved Hyperbole and a Half, and was excited when I saw Brosh was coming out with another book.
What I thought of it: It was okay. Not as good as her first book, but for an understandable reason: medical complications and her sister's suicide (that's not a spoiler, as the book is dedicated to her sister). Thus, the book had a heaviness to it that the first one didn't. Still there were some parts that made me laugh so hard I cried.
Would I recommend it: Maybe? I'd say borrow it from the library, but don't buy it, unless you are also suffering a loss. It might be really relatable and cathartic in that case.
The Rats in the Walls by H.P. Lovecraft
Genre: Horror
Why I read it: I like HP Lovecraft
What I thought of it: Not as scary as I had been led to believe by my brother, but still a good story. I plan on reading Lovecraft Country at some point, which supposedly flips Lovecraft's racism on it's head, and so help me, if it doesn't make reference to this story and chattel slavery, I'll throw a fit.
Would I recommend it: Yes. I like that the cat didn't die. :)
The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft
Genre: Horror
Why I read it: I just... I just really like Lovecraft, okay?
What I thought of it: I find the sea inherently creepy, so when you have a decrepit backwater filled with a fishy stench and secrets, it's gotta be good.
Would I recommend it: Yes, especially if you liked the Fishing Hamlet part of the Bloodborne DLC (which I could not help but think of the whole time reading this novella).
The Thing on the Doorstep by H.P. Lovecraft
Genre: Horror
Why I read it: You know why.
What I thought of it: So if you've read enough Lovecraft, especially Dunwich Horror and Shadow Over Innsmouth, you already know what's coming... or do you? Right away, HP establishes that there is a special knock the guy uses with his friend, so I assumed the twist end would involve the Thing appearing in the guy's body but not using the knock, thus revealing itself to be (redacted for slight spoilers). I was wrong. That's not how it played out, and the way it played out was so much creepier!!!
Would I recommend it: Yeah! I really liked this one!
Haunter of the Dark by H.P. Lovecraft
Genre: Horror
Why I read it: Yup
What I thought of it: Same ol', same ol, but what I thought was cool in this one was that the supposedly superstitious Italian Catholic immigrants totally know what's up and spend their stormy nights keeping the Haunter at bay with nothing but candles and flashlights. What a neat detail!
Would I recommend it: Yup. :)
Halloweeny Goodness
Tumblr media
~“When witches go riding, and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers, ‘tis near Halloween’“~
I adore Halloween! I love scary movies, dressing up and most of all partying (although no one will be doing much partying this year with the old ‘rona’ flying round!) As a big fan of the horror genre and self diagnosed witch, I thought I’d share my top 10 horror movies.
So from the coven straight to your tumblr feed here's my
TOP TEN HORROR MOVIES FOR SPOOKY SEASON!
*WARNING: This post contains opinions, more specifically my opinions I would love to hear your top 10 as it is almost definitely going to be different to mine due to a little thing called personal taste*
10. A Quiet Place: Firstly, John Krasinski is one of the most attractive males I have ever laid my eyes on! and it was a mega plus watching him in dad mode throughout the movie! The acting in this film is pretty much 10/10 and the attention to detail throughout is simply spooktacular!
9. Sleepy Hollow: This film is honestly so aesthetically pleasing and includes a role played by Christina Ricci who is again one of my celebrity crushes (are you starting to see a pattern here?). This film is funny, scary, gory and even romantic at times. All the ingredients for a great movie!
8. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark: Although I personally love this film, I believe it has a much greater effect on a viewer who has previously read the short story series of the same name written by Alvin Schwartz. A slightly above average movie plot but the great effects, and right amount of nostalgia thrown in puts this movie at number 8 on my list.
7. Carrie: The first film on my list based on a book by my beloved Stephen King, Carrie is a relatable character I mean apart from the whole telekinetic powers thing...obviously. Although I definitely prefer the original to the newer remake both are worth the watch.
6.In the Tall Grass: Another one of Stephen Kings masterpieces, In the Tall Grass is a fairly new addition to the horror genre but in my opinion holds up against the classics. The perfect amount of gore mixed with horror. As well as being interesting and psychological, this film has some great creative visual choices and is definitely worth a watch.
5.Coraline: Although not technically a horror movie, the Other Mother haunted the dreams of 9 year old me for months after the film was released which is why I believe this movie deserves fifth place on this list. Amazing visuals filmed in stop motion, Coraline is as charming as it is creepy and brings back a lot of nostalgia when re-watching.
4. Nightmare on Elm Street: An inspired creation by Wes Craven, Freddy Krueger is one of the most horrific creations in the horror genre. This movie works both as a slasher flick and a psychological thriller which is what makes it so amazing. As an older classic horror film, Nightmare on Elm Street still holds up in 2020 and is a must watch around Halloween time (I mean unless you actually want to fall asleep!)
3. IT (chapter 1 and 2): Now I have a massive fear of clowns and the original IT terrified me (Tim Curry’s Pennywise is my worst nightmare). The newer movies however venture into the adventure genre which is definitely different from the original but also the reason why I enjoy it so much. Everything from the characters and the actors who play them (the casting for these films is some of the best I've seen) to the great (but sometimes overused) CGI, this film is beautifully shot and deserves the third spot on my list.
2. Scream: Scream and it’s sequels were probably the first horror/slasher movies I ever watched and I adore them! Although they may not be the most scary films on this list, they have a charming nostalgia surrounding them that only 90′s films can bring! Neve Campbell’s acting as main character Sydney Prescott is Oscar worthy, and the way that Wes Craven takes expected horror movie clichés and turns them into great movies with some amazing plot twists is truly extraordinary. Definitely worth the watch this Halloween!
1.Pet Sematary: *Drum Roll* and in first place is ‘Pet Sematary’!! You guessed it a film adaptation of one of Stephen King’s books takes first place. Both the original and the remakes of this film stand out for their own special reasons. The original (1989) Has it’s strengths and weaknesses, Whilst I personally enjoy it as I have read the novel, A new audience member to this film may not completely understand the plot as the film is fast paced and difficult to keep up with without knowing the plot first. However, the cinematography is impressive, and the film has an eerie feel to it that not many movies have. The 2019 remake has to be one of my favorite movie in the horror genre! Jete Lawrence is an amazing child actor who portrays the role of Ellie perfectly. The movie is moving as well as scary, and conveys emotion exceptionally well making you care for the characters quickly! overall it’s a great movie with some beautifully shot scenes and that is why it gets number one on my list!
Bonus Movie: Although I could not fit ‘Gerald’s Game’ on the list, I just had to add it as a bonus movie! It is gruesome and thrilling with a completely original plot! A must watch!
What I played this month: October 2020, Part 2/2
Part 1
GIF by me (except for The Evil Within 2, I was to lazy...)
They bleed pixels, 2012, developed and published by Spooky Squid Games Inc, ~10 euros:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A young girl picks up a haunted book, becomes purple while swords replace her hands and she is now on a quest to kill the force of evil… I mean that's one of the best resumes I've seen for some time. The game is a hack and slash and platformer. As per the resume, the ambiance is really special, with the aesthetic and music. However this game isn’t for everyone, it’s definitely for more experienced players and even then you might still have issues finishing the game. The original difficulty of the game would be the equivalent of a difficult to very difficult scale. From what I saw this causes a lot of trouble for some players and the dev added an easy level, which is, for me, way too easy. So here I was stuck between almost no challenge, or stuck with levels that sometimes almost made me gauge my eyes out. For me, the main problem of the game is the platform part. You control a character that goes very fast, through levels that require precision and carefulness. You have three lives, but let’s be honest, you either die by falling in a pit, in which case, the three lives don’t matters, or you get hit by an enemy, which throws the character off in a nearby saw, which throw her right back at the ennemy, who hit her again, and bam your dead.
I honestly didn’t have the patience to finish the game. I honestly recommend you watch a playthrough or try a demo of the game before buying it.
Detention, 2017, developed and published by RedCandleGames, ~12 euros:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This game was a nice surprise! I bought it because I liked the artstyle, and I noped out of it back when I first started it because I didn’t realize it was a horror game. But just for this month, I started again, and I’m really happy I did! The story takes place in Taiwan during the white period. You control two students, Wei and Rin who are stuck, alone, in their high school during a storm, but not everything is as it seems. Soon enough Rin will wake up and find Wei dead, and in the middle of a dilapidated school occupied by evil spirits. The game is a point and click, you go forward solving puzzles. The puzzles are well organized, as is the level design, you will never find yourself lost for 20 minutes wondering where you need to go. The story is very interesting, but it takes some time to understand where the game is taking you. I would say you start to understand what happened half-way through (the game is 3 hours long). I would also recommend replaying the game or watching a playthrough after you finished it to really get the full extent of it. The horror in the game falls on the presence of the evil spirits and the fact that you don’t know what is happening, but once you start to understand, the horror feeling kind of disappears from the game, around the last hour, but I think this was wanted by the developers. What I really like about this game is that it shows you the real horrors of life are the ones that happen around us and who are perpetrated by other humans, and not the ones created by a common imaginary. I really recommend this game, but I think you should read a bit on the historical context before (you can find the info on the wikipedia page of the game!)
Speed dating for ghosts, 2018, developed and published by Copychaser Games, ~6 euros:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a dating sim but with ghosts! I really enjoyed this game, you essentially speed date ghosts. Each of them has a really different story, a different way that they react to their death, and their new life as ghosts. Some stories are funny or hopeful, others are heart wrenching. There is also a dog ghost that you can pet! Which is one of the best arguments in favor of you playing this game! There is nothing to say more about it, just go and play it!
Sagebrush, 2018, developed and published by Redact Games, ~6 euros:
Tumblr media
It’s a short point and click game. The game takes place in an abandoned small village who harbored a cult. You will be able to visit the common areas, the church, the cult leader home… in order to discover what happened in this place, how these people got enrolled in the cult and how they all died, how was their day to day life,.... The gameplay is really simple, it’s just a point and click, the puzzles are also really simple. But it doesn’t really matter as I feel like the main subject of the game is first and foremost the story, explaining how a cult works, how it indoctrinates people and how it can lead them to do things most people would never do while in their right mind. For me the game addressed the subject well, going right to the point and showing how a cult can slowly but surely, go into more and more extremist views, without necessarily condemning the members of said cult. If you are interested in things related to cults or you want to learn about it, you should play this game!
The Evil Within 2, developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda, 2018, ~30 euros:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a psychological horror game. You play the detective Sebastian Castellanos who’s thrown into a programmed town to retrieve his daughter. This town has been programmed as a sort of parallel dimension that can be inhabited by humans via linked consciousness. However, the town collapsed, and when you arrive most of the inhabitants have been turned into zombies.
So for starters, I like how the game induces horror, with the music, sound design, the position of the character who’s hiding a good part of the screen, the fact that he is slow even when running… The level design is simple but it works even if I’m not convinced by the use of an open world in a horror game. The level up of the character and the weapons is intuitive but a bit bland. You have several weapons available, but the game limits your ammunition. They are all common except the crossbow! Ah, the crossbow! I love this weapon! You have different kinds of bolts with different effects: lighting, smoke, bomb… The design of the enemies is, in my opinion, fairly usual for a zombie horror game but effective.
However, the story and characters are a bit bland in my opinion. The pitch of the story, of both The Evil Within games, is very interesting in my opinion, but I think it was better explored in the first game. The rest of the story is really not that interesting, it consists of go-to point A to point B. The only character I found interesting was Stefano (but honestly it’s probably because I’m a bit weird and I can relate to the idea of doing anything for your art, even killing… Even if I would never do that…) the other characters feel very caricatural, they have a two-line background that doesn’t even need to be there, and they are only there to help Sebastian advance the story, none of them have other goals or interests which ended up in one-dimensional characters without any flavor. Even the relationship between Sebastian and his family feels very empty.
I would only recommend this game if you are interested in a good horror game and not in a good story.
ranking the tma entities.
I wanted to examen the entities on the magnus archives and rank them based on how scary I found them, or how much they “get to me.”
None of the low rankings are at the fault of the creators, it’s all my personal opinion and obviously what I was scared of or fascinated with before the podcast is what’s impacting my opinion. We’re all gonna have different opinions on this, and if you listen to the magnus archives, I’m so curious on which ones are your favorite.
To keep this fun, I’ll also list my favorite statement related to each entity. Also, I’m sorry, but I won’t include extinction on this ranking. It’s not really touched on until the end and I don’t have a solid enough opinion on that one.
We’re starting at the bottom.
14. The Hunt - I mean, the hunt is cool, but like canon says, it’s hard to relate to this one due to the fear of being hunted not amongst most people. I don’t have a strong enough opinion on this one to really give it any chance to be higher on the list. I’ll give credit to it being the entity for some of the coolest characters (Daisy, Trevor, the Montauks)
Favorite Episode - 109 / Nightfall. Despite the low ranking of the hunt, I really love the montauk storyline, and it’s exciting to see julia and trevor team up
13. The Desolation - This one only ranks slightly higher because burning is the given for most painful way to go, but this one doesn’t get to me. It’s just, mean. Maybe if I worried about losing the things and people I love, but it’s not something I think about.
Favorite Episode - 067 / Burning Desire. Not a scary episode, but I have a soft spot for Agnes, she comes across as a tragic character. I’m also biased because I associate this episode with a good atmosphere I was in when listening to it for the first time.
12. The Slaughter - I think I feel similar to the hunt as I do this one. It’s cool, but I don’t have a fear of violence. Plus, the slaughter is often associated with war, and I've never been a fan of war imagery.
Favorite Episode - 042 / Grifter’s Bone. This is proof that I’m not put off by slaughter - related statements in general, because I freaking love this episode.
11. The Web - Ranking this one so low may be unpopular since a lot of people seem to love this one, but it doesn’t get to me ! I’m not scared of spiders and to the metaphorical sense, not scared of manipulation or control. I dislike it as much as the next, but doesn’t hold a true space in my nerves.
Favorite Episode - 081 / A Guest For Mr. Spider. I’m hard on the web, but there actually have been some spooky statements, especially the ones involving cocoons. But this episode is a special kind of creepy, and statement aside, showed us an even more vulnerable jon, which I loved.
10. The End - I think the statements that revolve around not being able to die are actually scarier than the ones about death itself, but I think I just have that natural fear of death, I think this is really just another neutral fear for me. I don’t really have much to add.
Favorite Episode - 121 / Far Away. Not a scary episode, but I really enjoy Oliver Banks, I love his statement, and you know, it was interesting to see him visit Jon.
9. The Corruption - It doesn’t seem fair to rank this one so low, corruption is so cool and creepy ! But I kind of got over my fear of bugs and gross stuff (with the exception of roaches. I still scream at the sight of roaches.) so these episodes just mostly serve as really good visuals. I will emphasize that I really love the corruption, I just simply love the other ones more.
Favorite Episode - 032 / Hive. The Flesh hive is my favorite aspect of corruption, and I really loved getting Jane’s side of the situation (sort of.) Plus, trypophobia is actually really unnerving. I just googled the word to make sure I spelt it right and now I have goosebumps. eeeesh...
8. The Spiral - To be honest, these episodes aren’t super intense, I don’t have a fear of going mad. It’s ranked high enough because of how much I love the distortion. I’m giving the creators’ credit for this one, the distortion is really the only reason the spiral has any impact on me.
Favorite Episode - 101/ Another Twist - see above.
7. The Buried - Now we’re getting to my fears. I got claustrophobia, babey ! Also I have asthma so the feeling of not being able to breath is a familiar one lmao.
Favorite Episode - 015 / Lost Johns’ Cave - I think this is a popular one amongst the fans. It’s such a good episode and I think about it a lot still.
6. The Eye - If we’re getting personal, I’m a private and paranoid person. So naturally this one is a bigger fear of mine. If I really think about it, I can scare myself over intense eye contact too. In a visual sense, I have a bias towards eye imagery.
Favorite Episode - 120 / Eye Contact. this is hard to answer, there aren’t many eye-centric episodes, although technically every episode involved the eye. But I like the references in this episode, and story-wise, the finale of season 3 is my favorite.
5. The Vast - It’s not fair to rank the vast higher than the buried, since I’m more scared of the latter, but the vast is just so fascinating to me. The only negative part is that I get vertigo, but I find the empty cosmos and the large ocean almost comforting. Idk, I like this one !
Favorite Episode - 051 / High Pressure. I just think this a neat statement ! I also like how being underwater does had an element of the buried, so best of both worlds.
4. The Lonely - I feel.. conflicted on ranking this one so high. On one hand, it’s not that scary, it’s just the fear of being alone, but on the other hadn't, when the statements hit me, they hit me the most. I love isolation and being alone, but these episodes make me feel like I’m only conditioned to love those things due to them being my comfort.
Favorite Episode - 170 / Recollection. This episode made me cry. I know it’s centered around Martin, but I also found myself relating to it too. Also, I love Martin.
3. The Dark - I can stand being in total darkness, unless I think about it long enough. I think that goes for many, but I still think about the dream where I saw a completely black patch growing on my ceiling and I actually screamed myself awake. I don’t recall another time I’ve had a scream-induced nightmare like that. Especially at my old age. I also think the creators do a good job making this one scary. I remember one Q & A where the writer said this was the hardest entity to write for.
Favorite Episode - 086 / Tucked In. By the way, I had that nightmare months before I heard this episode. This statement naturally stuck with me due to the familiarity.
2. The Stranger - Another popular entity, and rightfully so, the stranger has so many opportunities to be scary !! No wonder two of the season finales involve this one. I don’t think I can add much to it that’s not a given, I love how creative these statements can be. We have the “not them” we have nikola, the angler fish, etc.
Favorite Episode - 034 / Anatomy Class. I mean, as good as many of the stranger episodes are, this is my all-time favorite statement. The students are like an innocent form of uncanny and the professor’s fear is really felt.
1. The Flesh - if you follow my twitter, you might have expected this one. The visuals are so gross and interesting, I’m biased towards body horror. I even like the meat statements, I was surprised there were so many of them when I listened to the podcast for the first time (and tbh it’s helping me towards my path of not eating meat lol)  I don’t have deeper reasoning for making this one my favorite, I just think it’s neat (and gross.)
Favorite Episode - 171 / The Gardener. Yes, the newest episode to the date of me making this post. So far season five has been really exciting and I love the format it takes. But oh my god guys, the visuals for this one ?!?! The metaphors of negative body obsessions to something so grotesque yet fascinating to imagine. It’s not an episode I can listen to over and over (remember, this is a horror podcast and my nerves need a break) but it’s one that I’ll remember. It’s right up my alley in terms of horror content.
ANYWAY. This is not a final list, Most of the episodes I’ve only listened to once so I’m sure if I had a chance to revisit more of them I’ll change my mind on rankings and favorites. I genuinely like how everything is categorized, but these are based on my preexisting fears and fascinations, as mentioned above. The statements in the podcast only amplify them. so yeah, this list is very subject to change.
