Listen I'm having thoughts about Darkness at the Heart of my Love. Idk if I'm gonna be off base with this or if someone has literally already said this but I'm putting it out there:

Purely from a lore perspective, I think DATHOML is like a love letter from Papa to all his fans and followers, within the church and without. I think we've all determined what "When the summer dies, severing the ties means," so I think it's written almost like instructions for what to do following the wake of his death. Of course it's important to mention that Copia himself is assuming he will be killed like the previous Papas.

But he's reminding us, everybody, "I'm with you always," sort of like what people say when someone passes, that they'll always live on in your heart and your memories. But then he jumps right into a call to action, "Will you walk the line? My path serpentine" and my interpretation is that he's saying that it won't be easy without him there to lead the church, but will his fans continue working towards his goals even without him? And then he reminds us of the goals of his church, "Remember always, that love is all you need," telling us to continue to love and accept one another. And "Tell me who you want to be, and I will set you free," is just a reminder of the encouragement he's instilled in his followers to be themselves no matter what.

The chorus I think is simply his heartfelt gushy way of telling everyone he loves them and doesn't take their support for granted ❤️

BUT THEN GHESTIES

Honestly I'm not totally solid on what I interpret "Will you spill the wine to summon the divine?" means. It could mean just continuing with the rituals of the church or might reference evoking the Olde One or even possibly a reference to resurrection?

However this next line I have FEELINGS about. It's what pushed me to write this whole fucking post. I have always thought "Now paint a pair of eyes" is really kind of a stand out line, and to me this line is what first indicated that it might not be just for an individual lover. It's just kind of a weird thing to say! But! It dawned on me that he could be literally asking his fans at rituals to continue dressing up like him, and then "let's watch as it dries" means "together we'll watch my legacy live on through you all!" ʰᵉˡᵖ ᵗʰᵃᵗ ᵏⁱⁿᵈᵃ ᵐᵃᵏᵉˢ ᵐᵉ ˢᵒᵇ

I think the last new lyric that is introduced throughout the song is "and all this time you knew that I would put you through the darkness at the heart of my love" which is him saying that we knew as well as he did that he is probably gonna meet his demise, but we still chose to live him anyway once he ascended to the papacy. And the reason I think that is because it is immediately followed up with the lines "When the summer dies, severing the ties"

man I mean just. the SMFS album lettering is made of clay. the cover art is an actual physical painting. there's a lot less fx on the album as a whole than Mania (which is NOT a knock on my bbg Mania btw, just pointing out the different approach) or even SRAR and ABAP. the songs sound basically the same live as they do on the record because the production is so minimal. they have a huge vinyl dog head onstage with them, that they touch and interact with and talk to (and, in Pete's case, get eaten by). the attic scene is made by lowering a piece of rigging to literally make the stage smaller. there's actually a LOT of sets especially comparatively to their previous tours, the rigging around the stage is done up almost as a physical frame for it. they only have one screen onstage and it's small, its purpose is to be the 8-ball and to add a little bit of texture to the wider design. the backdrops, even the new desert scene for 2ourdust, are physical backdrops — one of which was made by one of Pete's kids — not LED or projections. the album title is made of clay. it's about existing in the world, making things so you feel alive, making the world a little more fuckin weird! do you get it yet?
